Marcus King: “F*ck My Life Up Again” (Solo Acoustic Version)

Music • Views: 13,873

I was blown away by the studio version of this song, but this one, Marcus playing an acoustic guitar and singing with no accompaniment, may be even more amazing.

Let you down one last time
So you remember you were mine
Count on me
To be something you could never be
‘Cause I’ll be free from all this hate
You’ll be left behind carrying the weight

Come fuck my life up again
I don’t deserve to live without pain
Destroy all my confidence again
Watch me lose control and feel ashamed
So come fuck my life up again

The problem’s always me
It’s just taken years for me to see
You didn’t call again last night
Maybe I’m just not worth the fight
I swear to God you saved my life
I swear to God that I won’t let you down twice

Come fuck my life up again
I don’t deserve to live without pain
Destroy all my confidence again
Cut me down and let me feel ashamed

Our hell was paradise to me
Happiness makes me feel so weak, yeah
Come fuck my life up again

I hope you never let me go through the years
Hope your madness starts to grow
I hope you never let me go through the years
Hope your madness starts to grow

I hope you never let me go through the years
Hope your madness starts to show
I hope you never let me go through the years
Hope your madness starts to grow

We had a dog like that. You never knew when it would turn and bite. Took it to a dog behaviorist. Found out that the dog never gave any signals of submissive behavior (drop head, licking, etc.) It simply could not respond properly to a human, even its owners. It also had a couple of other behavior problems (circling) We had a young child and simply could not keep it.

It was tough.

Autism in dogs. We assume that there’s a range of behaviors they will behave in, but why is that true?

Edit: and that they would understand what we want given the right inputs.

For me, this is the best version of Crossroads by a light year. Clapton was absolutely on fire, the solo sections in this are unbelievable. He just doesn’t play like this any more.

[Embedded content]

I agree and almost posted the original uptempo version, but thought watching the visual and listening to interplay between Clapton, Bruce and Baker underscored Bruce’s bass lines contrasting with Clapton’s. (Bach smiles).

“But dad, you said they would all bring treats.”

When Merle, my cattle dog, starts barking at someone, I say, “Merle, don’t be a dick!” and he stops. Used the same command with Banjo for 13 years. Between that and “Two dogs!” (My call when I want both dogs to return to me if they’re beyond my immediate vision) that’s all I need.

I posted on FB today the Delthia Ricks tweet from yesterday on the resurgence of measles in this country due to the influence of anti-vaxxers. To my surprise(maybe not) 2 of my Trump supporting friends apparently believe that the immigrants who have migrated here bear responsibility for the return of measles. Other than over-the-top rhetoric from RW media on disease-ridden migrants, I don’t believe there is any validity to those charges. Or does someone here have any evidence to the contrary?

We’re trying to find a new dog, but we’re not a big dog family, and most of the dogs are big dogs. The one dog I might have wanted requires an application (for some reason some, but not all dogs, require an application). The dog’s been stuck at the animal shelter for 3 months now. One section is about our vet schedule. I’m going to straight up admit that I didn’t take the dogs to the vet unless they were sick, but two of my dogs made it well into ancient age for their breed.

The third one went from healthy to had to be put to sleep in a couple of days.

Just say you’ll take them for regular vaccinations and an annual checkup. I know that going to the vet is basically a $200 minimum these days (Though Eartha’s mani-pedi is about $24)…but anything requiring seeing the doctor is a couple hundred bucks. Hell the dog’s flea/tick/dewormer pills are 60 bucks a month.

My experience is that finding a proper cat is the way to go.

“Proper” is the operative point.

Does the cat, as a kitten, love to get belly rubs and not bite and scratch?

That’s a major plus! It will save you a lot of flesh wounds.

Does the cat make biscuits without driving its claws into the top of your thighs?

That’s a keeper!

Does the cat mark territory outside of the house and not inside? Congrats! You have a Nice Kitty, who will give you years of love and companionship.

The bonded pair I adopted last April were afraid of me at first. They were 11 months old and had been with their foster all that time. They were hard to adopt because they look so much alike. Over the last 10 months, they’ve come around. They like to be with me. We have our little routines. Sakura always jumps on my bed when I open the bedroom door in the morning. She wants to sniff my breath. Fuji comes to check out my legs when I get out of the shower. They sleep on my bed. They love it when I strip the sheets because it’s playtime!

Note: When you start trying to learn the trumpet, don’t buy a generic tuner, because it doesn’t understand trumpet any more than you do. I couldn’t figure out what I was needing to hit for an open C and G, and trying to use a generic tuner wasn’t helping. I found a Trumpet ap, and that helped a lot.

Open C sounds flat to me, even though I am hitting the point on the tuner. I don’t have a lot of air in the sound, but I suspect my embouchure isn’t quite up to quality yet, and I’ve got work to do (I started a month a go, then caught a sinus infection, and have gotten back into it since monday). And it could also be that it’s actually a b-flat.

Something kind of cool happened. I played the first five notes of the C scale and when I got to G, I found that I had already changed my blowing on the way up to be at that note.

Voting in US general elections is not a political act. It is pest control (voting against Republicans as effectively as possible).

People who want to actually do politics in the US need to engage in the D primaries (and ever earlier, realistically).

I’m hoping Schumer does two things regarding the Mayorkas impeachment.

1) Have Fetterman be both the PR guy and the substance guy for this.

2) Have no leash on Fetterman.

We may as well make good use of the talents we have in the Senate.

He wasn’t charged with mass murder when 100’s already born died in the previous power grid failure. Don’t they always use the phrase “an act of God”, even if it was a totally predictable consequence of ignoring appropriate measures to take to prevent a known potential problem.

Voting in US general elections is not a political act. It is pest control (voting against Republicans as effectively as possible).

People who want to actually do politics in the US need to engage in the D primaries (and ever earlier, realistically).

I’m just worried that if the Hamas war isn’t resolved soon, we will end up with Trump in the White House. I am certain the Florida election in 2000 would have ended very differently if Elian Gonzalez’s mother hadn’t made that disastrous voyage to the United States. One event outside our control — and the whole world can change.

That is so sad. A dog which doesn’t understand how to work with humans.

I guess I will say the quiet part out loud…

Unless that dog was amazingly lucky, it likely did not have much of a chance to survive. And it almost sounds cruel to demand that such a dog try to interact with humans.

re: #85 Hecuba’s daughter

There are a whole bunch of issues that the Iranians and their Russian friends tried to set in motion by activating their client militias. All of which are problems for the US and our allies.

That is why Biden sent two carrier task forces to the region. Which might explain one of the reasons why Hezbollah suddenly lost interest in starting a war in the region.

The Israelis are also relocating troops from Gaza to the Lebanese border. And many of the Israeli airstrikes that have been carried out fly through American radar zones. Which requires Israel to brief the United States on what they are doing and get US permission.

That was why I was so curious about the Iranian Natural Gas pipeline explosion last week. I was wondering if it was a pointed warning by one of our more capable allies/clients.

I saw a news blurb today that Iran blamed Israel for it, which confirmed that the explosion happened.

As to the cause. Who knows… There is a sufficient incompetence in that region to cause a pipeline explosion without external assistance. And it gives Iranian authorities something else to wonder about.

An important new iteration of the robotic seeing eye dog was shown to the world this week, when Glasgow University showed off RoboGuide, an AI-powered quadruped for visually impaired people. The future for robotic canine assistants looks not just commercially huge, but also massively empowering for the world’s one-third of billion visually impaired people.

Replacing a real “seeing eye dog” with a robot guide dog might seem like a step backwards, particularly considering the life-affirming nature of the inter-species collaboration and the obvious emotional bond.

That’s until you realize that only one in every 15,000 visually impaired people has a service dog of any kind.

After a century of development, there are just 20,000 guide dogs on the planet … and 43 million blind people … plus another 295 million who are visually impaired enough that a guide dog would radically improve their existence.

That is a significant number - one third of a billion human beings - and it puts the need for low cost robotic assistants into the territory of a humanitarian cause because each one can give a human life-changing autonomy.

Most importantly, in reducing the cost of a useful assistant from the US$50,000 for a trained dog, to below $2,000 which seems likely, there’s a formidable latent demand waiting to be met.

As ingenious as the guide dog is, all that training costs money (ballpark $50,000 a dog) and time (15-18 months) and the failure rate is around 50%, so it isn’t surprising that the system hasn’t scaled well enough to include the other 99.9% of less privileged humans who need one now. This is further compounded by the limited life expectancy of dogs. The average service life of a canine service dog is just five to seven years. Robots will have a life expectancy far greater than that, and can be repaired to brand new: canines and humans cannot.

That is why it was so heartbreaking. Kiri could not live with humans. The breeder, who is one of the best in the country, had originally been hesitant about selling her to us. Because the coloring was very rare, requiring recessive genes on both chromosomes, which increased the chances of other problems. Turns out she was right.

She only did this because we had waited so long for one of hers. My son is the one who was set on a Shiba Inu.

She gave us pick of the next litter - Samurai - who we had for over 15 years. He was the best dog I ever had and I still miss him 10 years later.

The gap in actual play between the consoles gets smaller with each generation, which, as good as they’ve gotten, makes it harder to justify getting the next version. VR/AR is really the next frontier just because getting true 3D is a big enough jump for people to think it’s really and advancement.

When I talk about PCs, I consider the 16 to 32 bit jump to have been a major leap. 32 to 64 really wasn’t as big of a jump, and neither was single core to multicore. It wasn’t until we saw solid state drives come out that a true leap in computer’s ability. It might seem strange, but it was such a big difference in how the computer operated.

And here’s Lara Trump more or less making it official; Trump’s gonna raid the RNC’s piggy bank and bust ‘em out….

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law and handpicked choice to help lead the Republican National Committee said she thinks Republican voters would support having the political organization pay the former president’s ballooning legal fees.

Lara Trump said Wednesday while campaigning for her father-in-law ahead of the South Carolina primary that she was not familiar with the RNC’s rules about paying Donald Trump’s legal fees in a multitude of criminal and civil cases.

But she said she thought the idea would get broad support among GOP voters who see his legal cases as political persecution.

“That’s why people are furious right now. And they see the attacks against him. They feel like it’s an attack not just on Donald Trump but on this country,” she said. “So yeah I think that is a big interest to people, absolutely.”

“…The university began performing autopsies for the prison system in 2006, according to a January 2017 research paper published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences by three of the school’s researchers. Back then, the death rate in the prisons was 80% less than what it was in 2023.

The article found that 421 inmate cases were referred to the university from June 2006 through July 10, 2015. Most of those deaths were ruled accidental as a result of drug toxicity. There were also nearly 180 deaths found to have been the result of natural causes, researchers said.

But in 2018, questions began to emerge regarding the university’s handling of prisoner organs post-autopsy inside the medical school.

A group of medical students began questioning their pathology lab instructors over what they saw as a disproportionate number of organ specimens coming from deceased prisoners. Each specimen, the students told me, included a short biography, which did not name the person who had died, but gave some of their health history.

“We kept getting cases that read, ‘This is a set of lungs from a man who was incarcerated at St. Clair Correctional Facility,’ ” one of the former students said. ” ‘These are the lungs of a 90-year-old man, who died of aspiration, pneumonia, secondary to Alzheimer’s disease in X, Y, Z correctional facility.’ “

The students suspected that the families of the dead inmates hadn’t consented to the use of their relatives’ organs for medical education.

“I remember someone from the Department of Pathology writing down, ‘No more than one-third of the specimens came from incarcerated people,’ ” a former student said.

“And it seems like to them, they were saying that that wasn’t a disproportionate number, but to me, that stood out because one-third of the population of Alabama is not incarcerated.”

I’d argue that the “games as a service” business model that AAA studios have adopted in recent years was a bit part of the reason this console generation stagnated. The bulk of the game titles either available at launch or released within the first year were available on the previous gen with slightly downgraded graphics, while most of the big money makers were “live service” games that made most of their profits on things like battle passes and loot boxes rather than physical sales. If you can play the same games without shelling out for a new console or just download them on your PC, then why fork over the cash for a shiny new brick?

I spent the last 10 years of my research career trying to bring vaccines into the 21st Century (If you knew how we used to make smallpox vaccines you’d simply not understand hiow we eradicated it from the wild).

It was because of that research and that of so many others that we were able to meet the SARS-CoV2 pandemic as well as we did. Imagine if we had not had any vaccines for say 5 years?

And then imagine my horror as the MAGA nuts simply threw away all the work of 100 years? Darwin Award winners all. I’ve dealt with denialists like creationists but they are generally harmless. But these people will not only kill themselves, they will kill those who canot be vaccinated - the young and the immunocompromised. It can happen even with the best breeders, as ours is. She has spent 30 years trying to breed Shibas who are much more easily socialized that the breed general is.Not as standoffish or single people dogs. She now has dogs that are the most fun ones I have ever seen - tremendous personalities, like cats, but so nice and well-behaved. ANd sometimes just plain goofy. She has a large group of them running on her property and it is fun just watching them. If I felt like I could physically take care of a dog, I’d get one of hers again.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones did it two years ago. Rudolph Giuliani did it just before Christmas. Now there’s a very good chance that before March 12, Donald Trump will join them in filing personal bankruptcy.

Trump would do so for the same reason as Jones and Giuliani — to delay paying court-ordered awards for defamation.

Trump has never filed personal bankruptcy, as I will show below. Doing so now might seem at first blush to ruin his brand, his polished image as a multi-billionaire, a modern Midas who turns to gold all that he touches.

Trump has managed to trick tens of millions of Americans into believing he is a business genius rather than a wealth-destroying con artist. People who believe he is worth billions will believe him when he says he only filed personal bankruptcy because they made him do it.

If Russian security services are proven to have been responsible for this, then it’s time for the US State Department to put Russia on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Enough is enough.

The Spanish intelligence services have no doubt that the long hand of the Kremlin is behind an unprecedented crime: the assassination in Alicante of Maxim Kuzminov, the Russian captain who defected last August and crossed over to Ukraine with his Mi8 combat helicopter. Publicly, the Spanish government has been very cautious regarding the possible responsibility behind the murder. “We have to let the Guardia Civil [national police force] do its job and for the investigation to progress,” said the government spokeswoman, Pilar Alegría, on Tuesday. However, diplomatic sources recognize that, although they are still waiting to gather enough information, it is a “very serious” matter. If the involvement of the Russian authorities is confirmed, they add, Spain will give a “forceful response”.

It is not the first time that a dissident has been killed in Western Europe (the most famous case is that of Alexander Litvinenko, poisoned with plutonium in 2006 in the United Kingdom), but it is the first time that it has been done on Spanish soil. Contrary to other occasions, Moscow has not remained hidden. It has shown its satisfaction. When his identity had not yet been confirmed, Russian media were the first to report the news of Kuzminov’s death, to whom they attributed problems with alcohol and drugs, adding that he had become an “uncomfortable and dangerous witness” for Kyiv. After the news was ratified by Ukraine, the head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergei Naryshkin, sentenced this Tuesday that the victim was “a criminal traitor” and “a moral corpse” since he defected from his country.

Somebody further down in the comments hit the real reason, I suspect - SEO. I did a search using the original headline and almost every major media outlet came up with one similar. Not a good way to get clicks.

But the changed headline returned only 1 other one and it was not similar at all. Remember it it is all about clicks.

And they have now changed it again, likely due to feedback. Gone is the ‘beleaguered’. The headline is now “Biden Chips Away at Student Loan Debt, Bit by Bit, Amid High Expectations.”

It only took them like 12 hours. And the article it ends with this: A version of this article appears in print on Feb. 22, 2024, Section A, Page 13 of the New York edition with the headline: Biden Cancels $1.2 Billion in Student Debt, Addressing Issue on the Trail. So the positive Biden story is buried way back in section A. But a very blah headline.

I don’t think collars on cats is an especially good idea. The way cats jump on things it’s too easy for a collar to get hung up. If you put a collar on a cat it has to be one that breaks apart if stressed.

i’ve been using two 40amp relays in our solar distribution panel.
the wires didnt seem thick enough and i think i was getting too much voltage drop. (in retrospect, probably wasnt a lot).
and they get pretty hot
so i wanted to replace them

there was definitely voltage drop in the wiring so I wanted to up the gauge of all the panel wires too from 12 to 8

i learned about solid state relays (ssrs)
got two
installed
had that wiring problem last week, fixed it and… wow, even more voltage drop

(note to ssr manufacturers. dont label your terminals 1, 2, 3, 4. label them like a relay, 30, 85, 86, 87 ffs)

having upgraded the wiring there was no going back to those old relays.
found a much bigger relay, with m6 screw termsinals for the load wires.
got it overnight (thank you amazon).
and tested it before installing / rewiring.
looks like almost no voltage drop across the contacts.

meanwhile, I had an epiphany the other night while falling asleep.
i can eliminate one of the two relays and the low voltage cutoff/battery protector.
and all that wiring.

because we have 4 solar controllers and a clock, i dont use the solar controller DC load feature.
but couldnt i use one controller to switch the relay on and off?
after testing, indeed i can.
i just never ‘saw’ it before, then all of a sudden, poof, ah, of course.

so that’ll be this coming weekend - reroute a few wires, and install the new relay.

but first a final bit of testing today to ensure it will really work the way i want. (all that planning and hoping with the ssrs was disappointing)

then there will be pix

Craig Ross Jr., 46, appeared in court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to first-degree kidnapping and predatory sexual assault against a child. With the plea deal, the case will no longer go to trial, which could have forced the victim to testify.
Ross is accused of kidnapping a 9-year-old girl in late September while she was riding her bike not far from her family in Moreau Lake State Park. Her disappearance prompted an amber alert that lasted over the course of two days.

Solid-state relays have a voltage drop since they’re semiconductor devices, not contacts. If you’re scavenging for joules then use really good-quality contactors and relays, don’t cheap out. Over-spec them, if you’re switching 40A currents regularly then buy 80A or 100A rated devices (doof-car audio gear often has decent high-current switching devices at reasonable prices if you don’t mind pointless gold-plating here and there).

Wiring, make it as thick as you can bend and as short as you can route them. If you can, convert to higher voltages as close to the solar panels as you can since low voltages and high currents means greater losses in the wires.

i didnt know about the ssrs. now of course it makes sense.
not surprising they dont mention it in the dox.

the new relay is 120A. our load is about 15a max.

i considered switching to an mppt and serial wiring the panels but i dont think we’d gain much. we generate enough juice so inefficiency before the controllers is not an issue. the batteries stay topped off pretty well even while running the pumps all day every day.

the real voltage drop is from the distribution panel to the furthest pump. it’s 70 feet, 12v, and a 5 amp pump.

after the panel’s done, that 12awg 70 foot run will be upgraded.
either i’ll run another 12awg and use one pair for positive, one for negative. or just bite the bullet and go with 8awg

GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she did not endorse the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that said frozen embryos and fertilized eggs should be treated as children under state law.

Instead, Haley told the hosts of CNN’s “King Charles,” that she agreed an embryo is an unborn baby.

“Well, first of all, I didn’t, I mean, this is again, I didn’t say that I agreed with the Alabama ruling. What the question that I was asked is, do I believe an embryo is a baby?” Haley said Wednesday evening. “I do think that if you look in the definition, an embryo is considered an unborn baby. And so, yes, I believe from my stance that that is.”

“The difference is — and this is what I say about abortion as well — we need to treat these issues with the utmost respect,” she added.

Her remarks come after she faced pushback to an earlier interview with NBC News, in which she said, “I mean, embryos, to me, are babies.”

Meanwhile let’s check in with the latest naughty goings on at Hillside Church!

Former Hillsong leader Brian Houston insists he wasn’t searching for “ladies and girls” online

The disgraced pastor said his X/Twitter account was hacked. No one seems to believe him.

GEE I WONDER WHY????

When you see this on Xitter…

There were the “moral failures” of hipster pastor Carl Lentz of their New York affiliate. And the financial and leadership failures of Reed and Jess Bogard of their Dallas affiliate. And the COVID-related death of a church member who happened to be an anti-vaxxer. And the 60 Minutes Australia segment that documented even more allegations of sexual abuse by Hillsong leaders so egregious that reporter Tom Steinfort said the church was guilty of “indifference to the victims’ suffering so heartless it would surely make Jesus weep.”

In 2021, Houston was arrested on charges that he concealed child sexual abuse that he supposedly knew about… because the alleged culprit was his own father. Last August, however, he was acquitted of those charges.

Anyway. Back to “Ladies and girls kissing.”

That tweet remained up for about 16 minutes before it was deleted and Houston tweeted that his account had been broken into…oh and the excuses, excuses, excuses sound just as phony as the piety that has always been a hallmark of Hillsong…

‘No one wanted to talk’: Report finds GOP silent on massive new political headache

politico.com

The GOP’s latest nightmare scenario comes from Alabama, where the state’s high court found on Friday that the destruction of embryos constituted a crime under the state’s “wrongful death of a minor” law. That has led the eighth-largest hospital in the nation to stop in vitro fertilization procedures indefinitely, with other health care providers likely to follow.

Already, Republicans are being forced to answer for a policy that is not only out of step with public opinion on IVF but has very personal and potentially devastating consequences for the one in six Americans who struggle with fertility issues. The decision not only risks alienating swing voters but highlights how the consequences of Dobbs continue to crush Republicans up and down the ballot.

“It certainly intersects badly with general election politics for Republicans,” STAN BARNES, a political consultant and former GOP Arizona state senator told our colleague Alice Miranda Ollstein. “When a state, any state, takes an aggressive action on this particular topic, people are once again made aware of it and many think: ‘Maybe I can’t support a Republican in the general election.’”

I’ve been a senator since ’72. I’ve served with real racists. I’ve served with Strom Thurmond. But guess what? These guys are worse. These guys do not believe in basic democratic principles.”

— President Biden, quoted by Axios, on Republicans in Congress.

191
Belafon  Feb 22, 2024 • 6:52:58am

… Replacement theory — the concept that Western elites, sometimes manipulated by Jews, want to “replace” and disempower white Americans — is a prominent conspiracy among white conservatives, particularly MAGAs.

It is this panoply of racist theories and their historical foundational legacy that underpins so much political discourse in the U.S. It’s also, arguably, behind the ongoing demand among white male pundits and some Democratic strategists to get President Biden to step out of the 2024 campaign or at the very least, change vice presidents to a white man, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom, or even a white woman, like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Headlines like “Democrats have a Kamala Harris problem” and “Democrats’ weird answers on Kamala Harris” and “The Kamala Harris Problem” and “The Case for Biden to Drop Kamala Harris” abound — unprecedented in recent American politics.

The anti-Kamala caucusing has only escalated since 2020 when Biden was vetting vice presidential candidates. White male Democrats — the smallest voting bloc in the Democratic “Big Tent” — have not voted majority Democratic in any national election since LBJ passed that legislation, which was widely perceived as making him a “race traitor.” Yet, they still feel entitled to speak over and through Black women, who are the largest Democratic voting bloc.

The last all-white, all-male ticket in the Democratic party was in 2004 with John Kerry and John Edwards. That is also the first time Democrats have lost the popular vote since 1988…

Regardless of what some white Democrats might think, Harris is both beloved and admired among the Democratic base — including among LGBTQ+ people — for her long history of support for historically marginalized people. For 20 years, Harris has been fighting for LGBTQ+ rights. She was marrying lesbian and gay couples in San Francisco as District Attorney in 2004, before same sex-marriage was legal. She even reconnected with a gay male couple, Bradley Witherspoon and Raymond Cabone, whom she married on Feb.13, 2004, a day before Valentine’s Day…

Should Biden decide now to withdraw, which is extremely unlikely, he would endorse Harris. Voters would vote for Biden-Harris on the ballot and Harris would accrue his delegates — and the nomination. Who other than Dean Phillips would challenge her? The die is cast.

It’s nearly all white male pundits and late-night comedians (also all white men) doing this hand-wringing over Biden’s age. The Black Caucus is strongly supportive of Biden. It’s implausible that Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg or Gretchen Whitmer would set themselves up as write-in candidates against Harris: even if they wanted to — that’s career suicide for any future candidacy in 2028 or 2032…

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, who was close friends with Harris when they were in the Senate together, highlights Harris’s work on key issues of HBCU funding, police reform, expanding access to health care and LGBTQ rights. Booker told CNN, “I can’t think of a time that I’ve seen somebody have earned her chops but not get the credit where credit is due.”

Senate Pro Tempore Patty Murray was succinct, summing up the concern of many white pundits that Harris will be the next president — and expand the presidency beyond white men forever: “Everyone who says you can’t do something,” she said, “is afraid that you will.”

I don’t think collars on cats is an especially good idea. The way cats jump on things it’s too easy for a collar to get hung up. If you put a collar on a cat it has to be one that breaks apart if stressed.

FWIW.

No, this is a good point, and any collar that I’ve ever put on a cat has been a breakaway collar. However, some cats are clever, they figure out how a breakaway collar works and you can’t keep a collar on them.

Also, per the Financial Times, Trump has about 220,000 fewer donors than last time - roughly 516,000 donors in the second half of last year, compared with 740,000 at the same stage of his last race for the White House

Jesse loved to give me the therapeutic massage while gazing at me lovingly. But I did have to form the soccer shield sometimes over the tender bits because she wasn’t always mindful of that. and then sometimes I’d have to pull a little corner of the duvet up and say “here, use that please” which she was pretty good at doing! She developed a mortal fear of being anywhere near the afghan, after several embarrassing moments in which I had to help her extract her claws.

Top WV election official is a conspiracy nut peddling voter fraud/election fraud lies.

During the question-and-answer portion of a cybersecurity panel, which included senior officials from the FBI and Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Warner stepped up to the mic. “In October of 2020, the CIA lied to the American people on purpose and it was covered up by the FBI,” he said. “We have our own federal agencies lying to the American people.”

The panel thanked Warner tersely and moved on to another question.

Warner, who has been in his role for eight years and is running for the Republican nomination for governor, made similar conspiratorial claims about the CIA on the debate stage in December. His statements fit into a larger false conspiracy theory that he’s advanced that government agencies such as the CIA had a hand in rigging the 2020 election. The remarks have solidified him among his colleagues as the only sitting election director in the country to openly embrace the election denialism that former President Donald Trump has used to explain his 2020 loss.

“It is problematic when you have a chief election officer of a state embracing conspiracy theories that undermine people’s confidence in the election process for no good reason,” said Rick Hasen, a professor of election law at the UCLA School of Law.

“People should be able to look to their election and elected officials to provide them with truthful information and not to fan the flames of conspiracies,” Hasen said.

Warner, more than any other top election official in the country, has vacillated over the years between promoting election conspiracy theories and fighting them.

Yeah, vacillating. He supports right wing conspiracy theories claiming voter fraud, while ignoring actual election fraud committed by GOPers.

And a full-throated positive column about Kamala Harris from Jennifer Rubin:
Kamala Harris is an underrated asset

Vice President Harris was never as flawed as her critics made her out to be. From the onset of her term, she maintained a rigorous and effective diplomatic travel schedule and bolstered President Biden’s fight for voting rights. Unlike Biden, she never got ahead of the president on policy. Unlike former vice president Dan Quayle, she never made a late-night-comedy-worthy gaffe. And she has avoided her predecessor’s cringeworthy fawning…

The media seems bent on artificially leveling the playing field rather than providing substantive coverage of Biden and Harris’s record and probing the egregious defects in their opponent. (Sure, Trump’s a crazy insurrectionist, an indicted criminal and a fascist, but Biden is old and has Harris!)

That said, her work as the tip of the campaign’s spear on critical issues such as abortion and her fiery prosecution of the case against Trump will be gauged by her reception internationally and at home with voters critical to the Biden-Harris victory. So far, she is hitting her marks.

Ala. hospital halts IVF after state’s high court ruled embryos are “children”

Alabama has a state income tax. Looks like some people are going to declare a lot of dependents. Question, who takes care of the embryos if the parent’s estate does not pay for the freezers after the parents die? Does the state have to take that on?

Of course, Exodua actually describes the costs of actually causing a miscarriage. It is a fine decided on by the woman’s husband and the judges. So, this ruling not only goes against the Bible, it tells those of the Jewish faith they have to go against their own beliefs.

According to Jewish scripture, a person is not alive until they take their first breath. These embryos not only have never taken a breath, they don’t even have lungs!

Speaker Jesusbot goes off the rails again.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) delivered a “horrible” presentation at a GOP retreat in Miami, Florida this weekend that transformed into an all out “sermon,” sources told POLITICO. Johnson’s talk was meant to focus on the Republican Party’s prospects of keeping its two person House majority in the 2024 elections, but instead he began ranting about moral rot in the United States. According to two sources, the lawmaker cited declining numbers of church goers, as well as a withering national religious identity, in his speech. “I’m not at church,” said one source, who described the presentation as “horrible.” They believed Johnson was trying to unite GOP members. “The sermon was so long he couldn’t bring it back to make the point,” they said. Johnson, a Christian nationalist, has a habit of crossing the line between church and state. He’s so devoted to being devout he even admitted that Joe Biden’s presidency was “God’s will.” Last week, Johnson signaled that he planned to crush the Senate’s $95 billion foreign aid package.

Alabama lawmakers are advancing legislation that would strictly define who is considered female and male based on their reproductive systems. Opponents said the move could erode the rights of transgender and intersex people in the state.

“There are only two sexes, and every individual is either male or female,” declares the Senate bill approved in committee on Tuesday.

It defines sex based on reproductive anatomy and says schools and local governments can establish single-sex spaces, such as bathrooms, based on those definitions. A House committee plans to take up similar legislation Wednesday.

The same people worried about fewer American babies being born just cut the supply by 2%.

I tend to be more optimistic than most, but I keep getting this sinking feeling that the US is headed for a Japanese-style Lost Decade sort of recession. Between the constant threats of default and government shut downs, the refusal to understand that if we want the economy to keep growing we need more people via immigration, the ongoing consolidation of industries, threatened trade wars (10% tariff across the board!), and all the social conservative culture war bullshit as icing on the shit cake… a long term economic downturn for the US is the sort of thing that could lead to a global depression.

VP nominees don’t get changed in the modern era. Back in the day when the party actually chose the VP at the convention, sure (that’s why FDR had 3 VPs). But in the modern era when the presidential nominee picks the VP, it has never happened.

Also, there’s no upside to changing the VP. Because then it’s a week or two of “why are you changing running mates?” “have you lost faith in your VP?” and a plethora of other uncomfortable questions.

That’s true. FDR did have 3 VP’s and changing VP’s no longer happens. Didn’t occur to me.

Forget that fact that the fucking idiots out there who are undecided will inevitably go “Wow, the Dems caved on their guy even though we asked that we get rid of him. They can’t be trusted, let’s go with the wannabe dictator.”

Change Healthcare first noticed the “cyber security issue” affecting its networks on Wednesday morning on the East Coast.

It comes amid a major cell outage which has affected millions of customers across the country, crippling 911 services and leaving customers without reception on the biggest networks. That outage may have been caused by “human error”, according to one expert, but a “solar flare” has also been cited as a possible explanation for the cell problems.

Even that could be a win for him, part of the judges ruling was based on an 18 million dollar valuation of Mar-a-lago.

I think Trump would rather place his dong in the hand of a scissors-wielding lunatic than have to give up Mar-a-Lago.

Ever heard a male candidate described as “too boyish”?

I’m also reminded of Timothy Synder’s admonition “Do not obey in advance” with respect to fascists or wannabe-fascists - this means trying to anticipate what would offend them and surrendering to what you think they want before they even ask/demand. There’s a similar dynamic going on with people trying to anticipate what certain voters won’t accept - “Oh noes, swing voters would never go for Kamala so let’s get rid of her.”

I’d say the people who feel that negatively toward VP Harris - i.e. they’d never vote for Biden because of her - are trumpers anyway, so screw trying to figure out what they want or worse, giving in to it.

Ol’ Nelson had better things to do with his time, or better mistresses to do with whatever time he had remaining, which was only about three years at that point anyway.

Look, the point is, he died happy, albeit with a woman who wasn’t Happy.

(I had a great time showing my teenage son around the state capitol and all the things named for Nelson, while recounting the bawdy tale of his exit from this earth.)

Compare and Contrast—Two Rich Guy Politico Sex Scandals

The woman involved, Megan Marshack was 25 at the time of Rockefeller’s death, and is only now as old as he was when he died. Unlike, say, Stormy Daniels, she was neither a sex worker nor a “model/actress,” but a genuinely qualified and competent political assistant. She went on to a career as a news writer, married another journalist, and apparently lives in Southern California.

Okay, now that I’ve simmered down from the initial reaction to ‘girly’, and also acknowledging the importance of this election and the frustration of dealing with the horse-race press:
— what behavior from the VP gives you that impression?
— what evidence/counter-view from other Democrats might make you change your mind?
— what arguments do you think might sway other voters in your age range/ demographic/ neighborhood (whether physical or cyber-reach)?

We need every vote we can get, and every lever we can use to persuade the people who aren’t paying attention yet.

EDIT TO ADD: ckkatz said it better in #465

re: #423 Semper Fi

There is none. I just think (I’m ashamed to say) she’s a little too girly.

What. The. Fuck?!?

Seriously?

I could understand opposition to VP Harris on things that she actually did when she was the SF DA, CA AG, or Senator, but “girly” is a pretty damn shallow (and, frankly, misogynistic) “reason”. She’s shown herself to be a competent VPOTUS, as much as the modern job duties allow.
