It was a foregone conclusion that we were going to get some type of bill, it was always just an argument over how much and what is "stimulus".

/$780B is better than $900+B, remember, we still need to bail out the banks again Monday and that's actually more important, if we want to see an economic recovery

Heads up: Ashley Judd is going on Larry King Live tonight, bitching about how Sarah Palin is single-handedly slaughtering all of the wolves here in Alaska.

ASHLEY JUDD - CLOWN IN WOLF GUARDIAN'S CLOTHING

Michelle Malkin:

Actress Ashley Judd has finally earned her Hollywood stripes and provided award-winning comic relief. With Washington poised to shove a trillion-dollar “stimulus” pork pie down our throats, we need all the distractions we can get. I give Judd’s unintentionally entertaining performance in a new Sarah Palin-bashing animal rights ad two diversionary thumbs up.

The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund sponsored the YouTube video starring Judd. They’ve dubbed their campaign, launched this week, “Eye on Palin.” With all the serious, socially responsible celebrity earnestness she could muster, Judd decried aerial hunting of wolves in the GOP Alaska governor’s state. “It is time to stop Sarah Palin, and stop this senseless savagery,” Judd intoned.

Casting herself as an environmental expert, Judd attacked Palin for “casting aside science and championing the slaughter of wildlife.” The video shows a wolf being shot, writhing in pain, with an ominous soundtrack throbbing and menacing photos of Palin flashed across the screen. “Riddled with gunshots, biting at their backs in agony, they die (pause for quiver) a brutal death,” Judd enunciates slowly as wolf squeals punctuate the video. Defenders of Wildlife assails Gov. Palin for proposing a $150 bounty for every dead wolf killed by aerial hunters. She’s cruel and bloodthirsty and she must be stopped!

It’s a compelling, black-and-white story line. But like the world Ashley Judd inhabits, this plot is make-believe.

Fact is, the policy is intended to protect other animals – moose and caribou – from overpopulation of wolves. Alaskans rely on caribou and moose for food. Not all Americans care to live on environmentally-correct starlet diets of tofu salad and Pinkberry yogurt.

Say It Ain't So: Science, Energy on Stimulus Chopping Block

Below is a list of some of the cuts they have asked for.

National Science Foundation : $1.4 billion (100% cut)
Department of Energy, Efficiency and Renewable Energy: $1 billion (38% cut)
NASA exploration: $750 million (50% cut)
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: $427 million (35% cut)
Department of Defense, Alternative Vehicle Tech, Procurement: $100 million (100% cut)
Department of Energy Office of Science: $100 million (100%)

And taking an even bigger hit is education with a proposed cut of $15 billion, the bulk of the funding in the House bill.

From the GOP via The Corner:

The $780 billion figure doesn't include the $46.5 billion in amendments added to the stimulus bill this week. According to our numbers, the deal is at least $827 billion, $7 billion MORE than the House passed bill. With debt, that comes to $1.175 trillion total cost for the new deal.

Only in Washington can an increase over the original bill cost be sold as a cut.

Collins and Specter moving this bill to conference is a no-brainer for them. They are basically in charge of the contents of the final bill - and they don't have to vote for the final package if negotiations go sour, so if the heat from the angry masses gets too high they can walk away. So voters in Maine and Pennsylvania need to let them feel the heat.

Ashley Judd Doesn’t Care About Hooved Creatures

Now, okay. I’m a dog person. I see something like the Michael Vick situation and it makes my blood boil. So when Ashley Judd pouts about the poor puppies getting shot at by the mean mans in the airy-planes, there’s a second or two where I’m like, “Awww! You cut that out, Sarah Palin!”

But then the ol’ logic centers kick in. (Assuming you have any.) “Wait a sec… why are they killing these wolves? Just to be cruel? Are they placing bets on it?” Well, no. They’re trying to protect moose and caribou, which have been almost wiped out because of wolf overpopulation. Why is there a wolf overpopulation in Alaska? Because for a long time it was illegal to hunt them. And why are they shooting the wolves from planes? Well, because there aren’t a lot of roads up there.

One more Off-Topic Palin blurb. Refreshingly true, fair and balanced:

THE MEANING OF SARAH PALIN
By Yuval Levin - Feb 2009

Palin was assigned every view and position the Left considered unenlightened, and the response to her brought into the light all manner of implicit liberal assumptions about cultural conservatives. We were told that Palin was opposed to contraception, advocated teaching creationism in schools, and was inclined to ban books she disagreed with. She was described as a religious zealot, an anti-abortion extremist, a blind champion of abstinence-only sex education. She was said to have sought to make rape victims pay for their own medical exams, to have Alaska secede from the Union, and to get Pat Buchanan elected President. She was reported to believe that the Iraq war was mandated by God, that the end-times prophesied in the Book of Revelation were nearing and only Alaska would survive, and that global warming was purely a myth. None of this was true.

...

Sarah Palin embodied a very different notion of politics, in which sound instincts and valuable life experiences are considered sources of knowledge at least the equal of book learning. She is the product of an America in which explicit displays of pride in intellect are considered unseemly, and where physical prowess and moral constancy are given a higher place than intellectual achievement. She was in the habit of stressing these faculties instead—a habit that struck many in Washington as brutishness.

This is why Palin was seen as anti-intellectual when, properly speaking, she was simply non-intellectual. What she lacked was not intelligence—she is, clearly, highly intelligent—but rather the particular set of assumptions, references, and attitudes inculcated by America’s top twenty universities and transmitted by the nation’s elite cultural organs.

...

The reaction of the intellectual elite to Sarah Palin was far more provincial than Palin herself ever has been, and those who reacted so viscerally against her evinced little or no appreciation for an essential premise of democracy: that practical wisdom matters at least as much as formal education, and that leadership can emerge from utterly unexpected places. The presumption that the only road to power passes through the Ivy League and its tributaries is neither democratic nor sensible, and is, moreover, a sharp and wrongheaded break from the American tradition of citizen governance.

...

The striking thing about the last two months of the 2008 presidential race was not Palin’s inability to turn things around decisively for McCain, but her success in giving McCain a lead for even a short while. She seized the imagination of the public in a way that scared the Left, and rightly so. It is not Palin’s fault that McCain was incapable of harnessing the phenomenal response to his running mate to his own advantage.

...the Palin moment shed a powerful light on the power, the potential, and the ultimate inadequacy of a conservatism grounded solely in cultural populism. It also exposed the vulnerability of the Left to a challenge to its most cherished claims—as the sole representative of the interests of the working class and the only legitimate path to political power for an ambitious woman.

Mark Belling went through some of these on Rush this morning and explained what they really were for. I remember the NOAA part specifically mentioned and it was funding for something stupid (iirc) at the NOAA. Regardless, none of this has to do with stimulus, its PORK. Even if some of it (like NASA) is pork we agree with, its still pork. Funding for this stuff needs to be in separate appropriations bills or the annual budget, not an emergency economic stimulus package.

I was on that subject last night on here. Some jackass (from San Fran no less) started talking about what a fan they were of wolves, that they look so cuddly. I asked him, "have you ever seen a pack of wolves bring down a deer and start to eat it while its still alive?" Wild animals are exactly that:wild. Thats why they're in nature. Wolves have no predators other than man. If not kept in check their numbers get out of control, like they are in Northern WI right now.

Every time I hear some tree hugging bunny thumper I can't help but think of the guy that was mauled by the Panda Bear at the zoo when he got too close. "But he looked so cute and cuddly."

Yup, the panda was cute and cuddly. Then it attacked the guy and tried to eat him.

Man dies in Japan after 14 hospitals reject him

TOKYO — A 69-year-old Japanese man injured in a traffic accident died after paramedics spent more than an hour negotiating with 14 hospitals before finding one to admit him, a fire department official said today.

The man, whose bicycle collided with a motorcycle in the western city of Itami, waited at the scene in an ambulance because the hospitals said they could not accept him, citing a lack of specialists, equipment, beds and staff, according to Mitsuhisa Ikemoto.

It was the latest in a string of recent cases in Japan in which patients were denied treatment, underscoring the country's health care woes that include a shortage of doctors.

I wouldn't worry too much, folks. It's going to be a long time before this gets finalized into law, if Nancy Pelosi has anything to say about it.

In a statement sure to rile Republicans, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Friday dismissed calls for bipartisanship as “process” arguments extraneous to passing a stimulus bill — and warned Senate Democrats against slashing proposed increases to education spending.

Pelosi — speaking to reporters on the second day of her retreat with House Democrats at a swank Williamsburg, Va., golf resort — was clearly annoyed with Senate attempts to slash up to $100 billion in spending from the $819 billion package the House passed last week.

At the same time, she urged the need for speed in passing the package — and stopped short of saying that she’d insist on her demands during upcoming conference negotiations with the Senate.

“Washington seems consumed in the process argument of bipartisanship, when the rest of the country says they need this bill,” the California Democrat said, seeming to sweep aside the Obama administration initial desire to have broad GOP support for the plan.

“We must have a bill [quickly],” she said, in a clear message to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has spent the past two days wrangling with moderates who want to cut proposed education funding for the states by as much as $50 billion.

“These cuts are very damaging — [the House bill] was put together very carefully. ... The funding goes directly to school districts, they are stimulative because they maintain jobs instead of cutting jobs.”

Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), said: “Her comment really makes one wonder whether she understands the concerns of not only the majority of struggling Americans seeking tax relief and job creation, but many members from her own party.”

Lots of big egos in the eay of passing this bill.

172 ayatollah ghilmeini  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 5:31:48pm

A different perspective

Folks, I have some problems with this turd of a bill. It is bad. It will not do much.

That said, I am somewhat relieved it passed in the same way I felt some relief when the bailout turd came out.

We are in a deep recession, throwing 600k/mo. into unemployment. The bank bailout, bad as it was, prevented the banking system from completely imploding. It saved 10 million people from losing their homes jobs and worse.

As the folks in opposition, it is vital to let the dems hang themselves. This recession may last to 2012 even longer. The Golden Child may be a one term wonder with kind of leadership he has so far exhibited. While I would have preferred deep tax cuts and credits for job creation by private enterprise and liberalized rules on smaller sized companies going public (nothing stimulates the economy and pays taxe revenues like and IPO), but right now, the challenges are stemming the bleeding, getting banks bank on their feet and restoring investor and consumer confidence. Anyone not worried by current circumstances should be.

I talk to very smart people who handle bank workouts and M&A, there are hundreds of thousands of businesses out there hanging on by their fingernails and in deep risk of going under. If you love your country buy an American car today! Can't afford a car, take a romantic weekend or the kids someplace fun.

Everyone is pulling back, hunkering down, filled with uncertainty and worry. To hell with that. If its all going under, we will all go with it so pick up your heads America and proudly declare- he who dies with the most toys, wins! As members of the right we need to celebrate the idea that we will not let this leftist idiot and Kossacks prevent us from living life to its fullest. We are going to have to work harder and to enjoy the same quality of life over the next four years so dang it that means we have to PARTY harder.

Ignore the gloom and doom and live! We are free, our nation is still the wonder of the world and the COUTUS (Community Organizer of the United States), he too shall pass.

I am sick and tired of the negativism, whining and mean-spiritedness. For the next four years, Barack owns this mess and he will make the business case for our way of thinking for another generation in the same way Carter gave us 28 years of conservatives and conservative Democrats.

I am working harder than ever. I am working on two new companies and the prospects for both of them are excellent. One of the businesses has me in the ironic role of making money from building things lefties like; demand is never wrong!

By the way, oil is under $40 and there are great deals on SUVs.

Expected Specter and Sunshine Collins.

In addition to Collins, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill.

re: #68 Charles

Uh. Wait a minute.

Sarah Palin IS opposed to contraception, she did say she thought creationism should be taught in schools (and later took it back), she attended a hardcore Pentecostal church, she IS an abortion extremist (she advocates a constitutional amendment to ban abortions with NO exceptions), she did say that global warming was a myth, etc. etc.

There were distortions of her viewpoints, true. But this summary of her positions is dishonest.

Here are the reasons I voted for her:

In all these respects, Palin was an uncanny match for John McCain. Her political style and priorities resembled McCain’s in a way that no other senior Republican elected official’s did. Her conservatism, like McCain’s, was more an attitude than an ideology: it was a kind of moralistic anti-corruptionism, obsessed with honest dealing and powerfully allergic to excess and waste. Palin did not, of course, share McCain’s foreign-policy expertise or his heroic biography, but she shared what he often stressed most about himself, and what he most wanted to run on: she was, as the public would soon be informed ad nauseam, a reforming maverick.

It follows Walter's desire to "throw the bums out and start fresh", although as Walter correctly points out, she is a "career politician".
Also:

It seemed to matter not a whit that Palin had never taken any action on abortion in her time as governor, and rarely had much to say on the subject.

You are correct in your views about her religion, etc.
She doesn't push it legislatively. Bobby Jindal does.
Therein lies the difference in my attitude toward both.

A what-if scenario that I posted earlier at MM:

Suppose the Democrats have less than 50 guaranteed votes, maybe much less, and those on the fence want to see some Republican votes first. I bet a lot of Democrats have a barely-controlled case of upset stomach right now.

After all, $800 billion is a lot of money (do we have it?). There’s at least $250 billion that could be easily cut (neither jobs, nor tax-breaks), and there’s a Democratic Congressman who’s coming up with a no-pork $175 billion stimulus bill on his own.

If this bill fails, we will likely see many new faces in Congress in 2010.

The Question: what happens if, during the roll-call vote, no Republicans vote for the bill?

Remember, Obama’s record of spending money is essentially a $150 million failure.

How many remaining Democrats will vote for it?

How many will change their vote?

Use the money you have designated for this package to cover the governments expenses in the meantime.......
That would be a revolutionary idea and it would probably work. Think fo the spending spree people would be likely to go on..... which is what a stimulus needs.
I actually heard a conservative pundit on the radio last night say the same thing. Wonder if he reads LGF.
If we're really in that much trouble, this would be an innovative and idea and certainly worth a discussion......

TigerHawk suggests a way to fight the bill once it is passed:

Now, it has become very difficult to do big projects in this country because of the labyrinth of federal and state regulation and the propensity of anti-growth and environmental activists to delay projects by litigation. This ability to prevent development has been one of the great "accomplishments" of the left of the Democratic Party in the last generation, in symbiosis with the merely self-interested trial bar.

So, what if conservatives filed lawsuits to block, delay, harrass, and vex every project funded by the stimulus bill? You know, use the tactics of the left to prevent the waste of taxpayer money.

Sounds interesting, but I doubt it would work.

My guess is that they'll crumble if the bill does not pass, and be voted out if the bill causes the economic misery it seems likely to cause.

Your version sounds more plausible. Excellent!

From The Corner:

Senate Bill Still Costs More than House Bill
[Mark Hemingway]

Senate GOP sending this out:

The $780 billion figure doesn't include the $46.5 billion in amendments added to the stimulus bill this week. According to our numbers, the deal is at least $827 billion, $7 billion MORE than the House passed bill. With debt, that comes to $1.175 trillion total cost for the new deal.

Only in Washington can an increase over the original bill cost be sold as a cut.

This figure includes:

$780 B (for base deal)
$46.5 B (for amendments added during debate)
$348 B (for debt service)

Total equals $1.175 Trillion

To put that in perspective, the total cost of House bill is $1.168 trillion ($820 billion for bill and $348 billion for debt service)

CAIR WELCOMES PRESIDENT’S ISLAMIC REFERENCE AT PRAYER BREAKFAST

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/5/2009) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today welcomed President Barack Obama’s use of a quote from Islam’s Prophet Muhammad in his remarks at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast.

In his prepared remarks, President Obama quoted the prophetic tradition, or “hadith,” which states: “None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” That hadith may be found in Sahih Al-Bukhari, one of the most respected collections of the Prophet Muhammad’s statements and actions.

“We welcome President Obama’s use of one of the most beloved sayings of the Prophet Muhammad and appreciate the desire for religious inclusion and tolerance that apparently motivated his choice of references,” said CAIR Legislative Director Corey Saylor. “This reference, along with the president’s ground-breaking statement to the Muslim world in his inaugural address, can only serve to increase respect for religious diversity in America and help repair our nation’s damaged image worldwide.”

I hear what you're saying, Charles, but this situation is really not that extreme. Sarah is a friend of mine, she's a sane, balanced and popular executive who has no visible wacko tendencies, and I'm simply stating (ya just gotta trust me) that the above summary of her positions isn't dishonest at all. From what little I know of you and your excellent value system, I'm convinced that you'd really like to get to know the whole Palin family, and wouldn't put any extremist labels on them at all.

The Palin's are a liberal nightmare: A happy, respected, well-adjusted self-sustaining American family with a great value system, and lots of genuine love for each other, with no strings attached.

It just isn't that big of a deal.

We can't use support for ID as litmus test. Simply put, there just aren't enough Republicans who believe in evolution for us to win without support for people who are creationist. This does not, repeat not, mean that we don't talk about why ID and creationism are wrong. Well, when they're taxing tobacco to discourage its use, they understand that use will go down. When they're taxing tobacco to fund an expensive health program, suddenly they assume use will stay the same and the money will roll in.
I guess they "understand" only what they want to understand for the purposes of the moment!.........and work, savings, etc. is not a part of their purpose.

re: #43 CyanSnowHawk

Socialized medicine won't work for long. There is no highly advanced wealthy nation doing all the research and development for drugs that we will have to put artificial price caps on.

Sorry, but you just don't get this socialism thing.

Drug companies pare WAY back on how much they spend on new drugs, and eventually either go out of business or become puppets of the govt. People in high-paying jobs, who are working to improve the health of the entire world, are then out digging holes and filling them back in for the govt.

So it "works" just fine! Highly-paid, highly productive, self-supporting people no longer cause their neighbors to be envious of them, and they are now beholden to - and controlled by - the small group of plutocrats who run the govt.

When the lines get long, and the advancements and productivity dwindle, we say we just need to develop more stuff in govt labs, throw more money at it, and raise taxes even more. And when that produces little, we say "even more" again. So that's a "plus", too. It's an endless cycle of glorious socialism Comrade!

When people die an untimely death because of this (probably including some Lizards, here), they will say, "It was necessary - as a matter of principle!"

Not work!?! You didn't really think this was about making people healthier, did you?

/ And remember! It's NOT "socialism" unless The One CALLS IT "socialism"! Our fellow citizens VOTED FOR this! Welcome to the new America.

Arlen Specter has an interesting background, for example he's the individual responsible for the JFK assassination SINGLE-BULLET THEORY.

The single bullet theory was created by Warren Commission attorney Alen Specter to account for the three shots admitted to by the Commission and the seven wounds to President Kennedy and Govenor Connally. Several Commissioners went on record that they didn't believe in the SBT but evidently didn't understand its importance to the Lone Nut conclusion.

re: #172 ayatollah ghilmeini

I disagree. I feel cheated on. I feel betrayed by politicians and elites that knew they were creating a doomsday machine.

We worked hard and followed the rules - they did not.
We built wealth through sweat equity - they did not.
We believe in the principles of rational expectations for the economy - they tell us to go deeper into debt.

They can't stab me in the back if I refuse to turn my back to them.
I refuse to get on my knees to them by going further into debt.

Obama thanks Crist for support of stimulus plan

The push for stimulus money has put Florida's GOP governor and U.S. senator at odds.
By LESLEY CLARK AND LUCY MORGAN
Herald/Times Tallahassee Bureau

WASHINGTON -- The White House on Tuesday amped up the pressure to speedily pass a giant economic-stimulus package, with President Barack Obama dialing three Republican governors -- including Florida's Charlie Crist -- to thank them for backing the measure.

But even as Obama spoke with Crist -- along with Govs. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California and M. Jodi Rell of Connecticut -- Republican senators, including Florida's Mel Martinez, rolled out an alternative plan that narrows spending and focuses on tax breaks.

Crist was one of 19 governors -- four Republicans and 15 Democrats -- to sign a letter urging passage of Obama's stimulus package. The president called the governor over the lunch hour to thank him.

''He wanted help with the stimulus package,'' Crist said.

Crist, who has lobbied the Florida delegation on the issue, said he would do all he could to see that the state gets its fair share.

''I'm happy to help,'' Crist added.

However, much of what Stein said tonight about the porkilus bill was right on. Should we still not work with him to get that bill modified or defeated? Obama considering Iraq withdrawal options

The White House is considering at least two troop withdrawal options as it weighs a new Iraq strategy — one that would preserve President Barack Obama's campaign pledge to get all combat brigades out within 16 months and a second that would stretch it to 23 months, two officials said Friday.

A third, in-between option of 19 months is also being weighed, according to the officials, neither of whom would discuss the sensitive topic without being granted anonymity. One of the officials said the main focus appears to be on the 16-month and 23-month options; 23 months would run to the end of 2010.

And what if those two are drummed out of the party? It would send a strong signal to other Republicans. Imagine if they didn't budge.

I gotta say that if a genuine conservative challenged either Collins or Snowe here in Maine and actually won the primary they would lose in a landslide in the general election. Unfortunately this state has become a crazy left majority. The only counties that swing republican are the sparsely populated ones up north. The dense (relatively speaking) Cumberland county is overwhelmingly Democrat, and kook left at that. I think the only reason Snowe and Collins keep getting re-elected is that they have been around so long and they aren't too offensive to the local Democrats.

I fear that if Collins or Snowe ever get ousted it will be by a Democrat and not an authentic conservative.

I'm not defending either of these two phonies either. Just spouting off....

Guinness, don't fail me now!

Due to some LGF poster's (I forget who, but thank you) remarks about Alger Hiss and communist infiltration in the 1930s and 1940s U.S., I just started reading Witness by Whitaker Chambers.

I was surprised to discover that Witness is a real page turner, so far, a kind of non-fiction novel, with secret identities, chase scenes, Soviet murders on the streets of U.S. cities, etc. Very very interesting. Chambers remarks in passing that the actual government of the Soviet Union was only a lesser interest of the Communist party. You probably all knew that, but think about it in today's terms--Transnational Progressives ruling a huge country by whim according to their visions of utopia and power-seeking. The Party was everything, the country was just their "base."

Now I don't want to sound like a looney here, but it's always interesting to review old material from a new perspective.

Cuban Missile Crisis
Kennedy being shot
Martin Luther King being shot
Kennedy being shot
War in Viet Nam
Cowards running from an ally
Nixon run out of office
Malaise of Carter
Regan fixing things
Regan being wounded
A sex addict in the White House
Numerous global crisis
Cold War ending
George Bush getting elected and thrown into the fray
Georege Bush being vilified by loons
Financial crisis
Stupid response to financial crisis

Out of all of these the one posing the greatest threat to our way of life is the last. We lag roughly 40-50 years behind the UK and right now we're in the same financial straits they were in during the 50's and 60's. We've lost our industrial base and jobs to tax and spend politicians. This is serious and if the US fails then we take down with us the rest of the world. The next big failure will probably be with the cell phone companies as they are doing what led to the financial sector failing.

Nope; only $730,000,000,000 (730B). (I used 2,000 years x 365 (days in a year; I could have added the .24...except that 365 was a nice, even number) x $1M.)

Someone ought to send a bill to Congress giving each American man, woman and child $1M USD. 300M people * 1M...nah. That's $3T.

OT: On the bright side, I will get back a sizable a tax refund pre-Stinkulus. I'm in the market for a new PC; I need it for graphics programs (mainly Adobe CS3 or CS4). Though I use a Mac in my Photoshop class, I'm having a hard time keeping up with my instructor--mainly because for me (being a Windows user for around 15 years), the Mac GUI...bugs me. For example, if I highlight an object in any program running on Windows, then press the delete key, the object will either be deleted or (if a file, directory or shortcut) pop over to the Recycle Bin (the same as Mac's Trash). If I press "Delete" on a Mac...it does nothing; I have to drag it to the trash can. This and other differences between Mac's interface and Windows (at home and work) is making it difficult for me to switch between the two.

So I've opted to give Steve Ballmer a cut of my tax refund, by purchasing a PC. To LGF tech-lizards: which is the best of the Windows machines? Which company is good at building a custom machine with Windows XP? (I do not want Vista, as I suspect it may give me the same transition issues I'm having with the Mac GUI at college.)

The spending of that bill will not be done until '11, so any damage caused will not be apparent until his reelection is already wrapped up. So, if the economy tanks even more between here and then, it will have nothing tangible to do with this bill, except for it terrifying investors, so the claim that the bill caused any continued crisis can be spun by Obama. If the economy takes an upturn, this bill will have nothing to do with it but Obama can claim that it did and that he came to the rescue.

I don't see anything good coming from this bill.

The real disaster here is not the initial spending of $900BN or $780BN or whatever the hell the final number may be.

It's the creating of massive, massive new funding mandates.

Don't fool yourself that these expenditures are one-offs.

New government-created or government-dependent institutions need to be established now in order to receive and spend the lard.

We are creating a crowd of new pigs at the trough that will demand more, and more, and more funding into the future.

At a time when our country is best served economically by shrinking federal bureaucracies, we are proliferating bureaucracies like out-of-control, fast-growing kudzu.

I'm sorry about the riot comment. How do we protest and get any results? I'm just so frustrated. Our family business is on the verge of going under and the stress is killin me. The left hates the oilfield and has made trucking holy hell. What can I do to help myself and my employees?

I've written both Collins and Snowe so often I'm sure I'm on their "pay no mind" list.

Nah, you're not on their 'pay no mind' list . . . , keep on contacting them, be the squeaky wheel! They'll get to recognize your name, and your communication may become, like mine, so familiar you might find you're being listened to.....

My name is easily remembered and when I go to events where PA's legislators gather, they 'sort-of' recognize my face - my hair color is always different, so that causes a, 'don't I know you' look.

I am hoping Spector will be around next week because I really want to talk to him, at this point I'll go to either office.

I want him to look at me when I express the disappointment I have for him as a human being, and as a representative of Pennsylvania.

I'll not be disrespectful as I talk. He'll see the sadness in my face, and he'll hear the sadness in my voice, and I'm sure he'll re-visit our meeting over, and over again long after we part ways.
Well, that's what I hope to do, I hope to make our words a permanent memory in his brain. I want to clearly, and tactfully, tell him that he has let many American citizens down......

No harm done! I don't know what they are pumping right now. I'm kinda on the services side of the business. I can say this howevah, production and exploration will continue to shrink while prices are bad. Reason: free underground storage! Get it ! Leave it in the ground till its worth something. There is no reason oil shouldn't be in the $80 barrel range and still let us enjoy 1.60 gal gas. We should all be working in this wonderful organic business, makin a little money, keepin jobs and all the good things! Organic? Oil is organic! When a well is stimulated, water and other stuff is pumped into it with extreme pressure, like 5000 psi. The water has bleach or peroxide in it that would turn you white. You can ruin a well with bacterial or microbial infestation! Oil is organic. Its Goya earth mothers gift to us as long as we are willing to go harvest it!

Couple of follow up comments- to Thunder and those who think we are doomed. We are in the minority- the steamroller is rolling on us. That is never pleasant. We know they are wrong and I understand how it rankles the heart to see these children screwing things up- well those children won, they kicked our buts and part of it was our fault. When we sat back and watched Republicans porking up bills and did nothing about it when we knew they were wrong but we were afraid to criticize them for fear of undermining Bush, we very much contributed to this mess and this is our just desserts (and I hate saying that as much as anyone else- but when you can't even be honest with yourself, then you have no hope). But I promise you, the worm will turn it always does. Obama is getting serious challenge from the New Axis powers, it is inevitable that he is going to screw up huge.

And as for your Capitalist. I can't promise you success but if you were able to grow a franchise enough to expand, you have what it takes to succeed. This is not the best time but you know your customers and your store better than I do. For retailers that keep their costs lean, you can expand in bad times. I am a third generation retailer on both sides of my family. My sincerest best wishes of good luck to you.

If you're still there...

Don't forget about the rest of the world. Not only does our economy have a huge effect on the rest of the world, but people look to US as the land of opportunity and freedom - and this Spendulus Bill is a significant step back from that. There's some sort of Reagan story where an immigrant from a Communist country says something like, "At least I had someplace to escape TO!"

Yes, the Republicans and Democrats have magically reached a deal right at the end of the day, on a Friday, right before the weekend.

Exactly as I predicted last night. Call me Little Green Nostradamus.

I'd happily call you that, Charles, but it would be an insult. Nostradamus only ever gets it right because his Latin gibberish is so vague and confusing that you can apply at least one of his verses to almost anything. Kind of like the "Bible Code".

Anyway, there's nothing like a Friday afternoon to magically clear the desks of work.

And they only gave themselves a $93K raise. Would you do overtime for chump change?

Sens. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Susan Collins of Maine appeared to be the critical Republicans to sign onto the bill, giving Democrats the 60 votes needed to advance to a final vote. Democrats also voiced confidence that Republican Sen. Olympia Snow of Maine also would vote for the plan.

Why, oh why am I not surprised to see Specters name as one of the "Republicans" and two from Maine, to betray the needs of the country and sign off on this?

I certainly was not surprised to hear that a compromise had been reached this Friday evening. The stock market is closed, the weekend looms so the FMSM has days to spin this as positive. 60 people have just voted for socialism for 300+ million.

I agree.

It is a well timed ambush for the markets. But, I think the bond market will figure it out and interest rates will rise and bonds will fall.

Over the long term I would expect inflation would rise. It will peak and quickly turn into horrendous deflation.

As par for the course a lot of money would be siphoned off by various 0bama lackeys. The average Joe will suffer.

Obama just spent every little bit of his political capital.

You may be right but I don't think he is bothered by that...he has thrown, by proxy, everything in this bill but the kitchen sink using the Rahm ideology of "never letting a good crisis go to waste". Obama captured most of what he wanted to do in these upcoming four years in one bill.

615 dgcosbie  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 7:18:26am

That said, here is my take on the compromise and its effects:

1. It is a CRAP SANDWICH.

2. With the "compromises" the side order is Potato - rather than POOP-TATO Chips.

3. The net effect will be an 8-12% devaluation of the US Dollar.

4. I hope/pray the net effect will NOT go beyond that.

619 eaglewingz08  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:45:17am

The bill is even worse than portrayed by republicans because it will set a baseline for next year's budget so that even any modest cuts in future budgets (who am I kidding-modest increases in rates of increases of future budgets) will be portrayed by the dems and the press as 'earthshaking drastic draconian cruel budget cuts'. This bill is enshrinement of socialist government with no emergency exit built in. For Spectre to say that this is the best we could get and so he has to go along is idiocy. He has been played willingly by the democraps just like Sen. Gregg has been played by Mr. Obama. Gregg is out of the Senate and can't oppose the machinations with respect to the 2010 census, and Obama has neutred Gregg so he will have nothing to do with the 2010 census. The dems have gotten, apparently the votes for the new bill (no reduced spending, it still will come in over the numbers in the House Bill) and after it's sent to Conference everything that Spectre and Collins supposedly voted against will be added back into the bill and then put in for an up or down vote. Do you really believe that Spectre and Collins would then vote against the final bill, after having pissed in the faces of their constitutents to pass it in the Senate?
So the crapola sandwich will go to Obama for signature and we will have generations mortgaged for something that will not work (See Japan's public works' projects as clear examples of bankrupt liberal ideology that failed to fix its economy for twenty years).

620 ahabers  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 9:59:29am

It's time for conservatives to let Susan Collins and Arlen Specter know that if they vote for this atrocity we will all be sending A LOT of money to their next primary opponent in a country-wide effort to rid the Senate of their useless carcasses . The only thing they care about is being re-elected so the only way we may be able to stop them is to promise to support any Republican that will challenge them.

621 747pilot  Sat, Feb 7, 2009 3:43:50pm

It is time to get rid of the likes of Specter and the Snow Queens (Collins and Snow), in the Republican Party. You all might send a note to the newly elected RNC chairman and tell him how upset we are with these three morons. I contacted Kyle, McConnell and the Snow queens & Specter and expressed my displeasure with their actions
