Phil Plait tweets:
"For those lamenting "end of the space program" SpaceX just broke ground for the launch site of their Falcon Heavy."
Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.– SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies) today took another major step toward the first launch of the Falcon Heavy. This will be the world’s most powerful rocket, with more than twice the payload-to-orbit capacity of the space shuttle, but at only one third the cost of the Boeing/Lockheed Delta IV Heavy. The Falcon Heavy will be the first ever rocket to break the $1,000-per-pound-to-orbit barrier, less than a tenth as much as the Shuttle.
...
Falcon Heavy is to arrive at Vandenberg by the end of 2012, and its inaugural flight will follow soon after.

In 2000, a multi-walled carbon nanotube was tested to have a tensile strength of 63 gigapascals (GPa).[20] (For illustration, this translates into the ability to endure tension of a weight equivalent to 6422 kg on a cable with cross-section of 1 mm2.) Further studies, conducted in 2008, revealed that individual CNT shells have strengths of up to ~100 GPa, which is in good agreement with quantum/atomistic models.[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Those are the new computers that they added about half-way through the run. The original flight control system used discrete components and iron core memory (which preserved the contents of memory even through the Challenger's explosion and subsequent plunge into the sea in 1986 ).

Tang. Funny how people believe that was from the space program. NASA simply bought it off the shelf.
Tang is a fruit-flavored breakfast drink. Originally formulated by General Foods Corporation food scientist William A. Mitchell[1] in 1957, it was first marketed in powdered form in 1959.[2]
Sales of Tang were poor until NASA used it on John Glenn's Mercury flight,[3] and subsequent Gemini missions.
Since then, it was closely associated with the U.S. manned spaceflight program, leading to the misconception that Tang was invented for the space program.[4][5] The Tang brand is currently owned by Kraft Foods.

NASA used to publish a periodic series of tech bulletins on an amazing array of spin-offs. Some were as simple as improved canes for the handicapped. Another I remember was a use of the physics of suspended chain to damp the oscillations of high poles and towers. The alternate fuel might well come from the aeronautics side of NASA.

I assume so, I don't expect I will posting from their office computers. I don't have a laptop, nor an I-pad, or even a smartphone. Looks like Obama's not going to be swayed by the Cantor's posturing. Meanwhile, Boehner and McConnell are hearing from the Chamber of Commerce, who want a deal.
I guess more infighting is coming for the GOP.

That was before the Internet. Here is the gateway to NASA's web-based versions:

When he installed Panetta at CIA, he gave a specific primary directive: Find OBL and if we can't capture him, kill him. Shrub gave up on OBL in 2002 in the run-up to the invasion of Irag:
‘I truly am not that concerned about him’, said President George W Bush on 13 March 2002, after being asked the million-dollar question ‘where is bin Laden?’ once too often. ‘Deep in my heart I know the man is on the run, if he’s alive at all’, said Bush, brushing bin Laden off as ‘a person who has now been marginalized’.

Yes, but it was back-burnered in 2002. Iraq became the priority. The CIA was tasked with connecting Hussein to terrorism (It's a slam dunk!). And the invasion was on.

I'm not happy with a lot that's gone down since 9/11...but to hand all the credit to taking down OBL to BO is naive in the extreme...it's not as complicated as you are trying to make it with this dropped the ball meme and resources spent...it probably took 10-20 CIA people to find and keep tabs on OBL and all the leads across almost ten years...it never stopped and even more money would not be needed...the CIA has all the money/firepower it wants

Well, I think that is just naive. Putting the full assets of the CIA on a problem, as Obama ordered, rather than just giving it short shrift, as the Bush admin did starting in 2002, is the difference between killing the motherfucker and treating him as "a person who has now been marginalized." as Bush said in '02. You may think there is no difference, but I suggest that you are dead wrong.
And not giving Obama the credit for the direction that the CIA was told to take is also dead wrong. Cards bark, as they say in poker. OBL is dead, and the Obama admin got him, after the Bush admin dropped the ball. QED.
Bang!

Getting here late as usual.
I am goggle-eyed at the fantastic menagerie of crazies with whom Rick Perry is openly associating himself. These aren't just Evangelical cranks, some of them are so far out there they are regarded as cranks even in the Evangelical crank world. It is alarming that he even thinks he can get away with this, as though it is obvious that sex with demons and magical bird kills are just run of the mill hypotheses in public discourse these days.
Perry himself is not an Evangelical crank. Like the cranks themselves, especially the radical theocrats like David Barton, his real purpose is to attach divine authority to his 100% pro-business economic policy and the continued concentration of wealth at the top in this country.
199 | Shiplord Kirel Wed, Jul 13, 2011 9:40:15pm |
One ray of hope: Democrat strategists and media planners will feast on Perry's liver if he actually wins the nomination, or even if he manages to coerce Romney into giving him the second spot. The little known cranks from the stadium prayer meeting will become famous as national; indeed, global; laughingstocks. Otherwise politically illiterate teenagers will know "dead bird lady" and "demon sex guy" on sight.

No matter how the economic debate goes, the Democrats will have no trouble portraying Perry as either a lunatic or a cynical opportunist consorting with lunatics. A GOP decision to "leave out the culture war" will not oblige the Democrats to do the same.

Right, the Obama recession that started under Bush, and what "pro growth" policies? It was a lack of financial and lending industry oversight that caused the Bush recession, caused by deregulation, Republicans are all about deregulation.

Generally, they're against any science that challenges their religious preconceptions. On the other hand, science that goes towards better bombs, guns, or missiles, they're totally for. Tell them that their tax dollars are going towards space telescopes that will better help us understand the beginnings of the universe and they'll balk at the cost. I can visualize an Obama TV ad for the 2012 election: A corporate jet with a large “Big Business Corporation” logo rolls up to the camera. The door opens and the camera moves inside. Seated in a large, leather chair, surrounded by a bevy of beautiful young ladies, sits a robust, mid-50’s businessman. He’s smoking a large cigar and is sipping a large glass of bourbon. The camera focuses on the businessman and he says “Thanks to all the Republicans in Congress the Big Business Corporation did not have to pay any corporate income taxes this year. With all the taxes we saved on our humongous profits we were able to go out and purchase this great airplane. And the best part is we can also deduct the planes cost and operating costs on next year’s taxes. THANK YOU REPUBLICANS!”

Actually, I think Perry could survive in the VP slot and it would be salable as a pro-growth ticket.
Pro-growth in what? Debt? Perry's real good at it:
Despite Perry’s Tough Budget Talk, Texas’ Debt Growing Faster Than The Nation’s
From 2001 to 2010, state debt alone grew from $13.4 billion to $37.8 billion, according to the Texas Bond Review Board. That’s an increase of 281 percent. Over the same time, the national debt rose almost 234 percent. [...]
Still, the trend is undeniable. While Texas lawmakers have refused to raise taxes — and often criticize Washington for borrowing and spending — the state has been paying for much of its expansion with borrowed money.
And that's with a Republican governor, a Republican lieutenant governor, and a Republican super-majority in the legislature. None of this can be laid at the feet of the Dems, since they're either useless or indistinguishable from the freaks in the Texas GOP.
What "pro-growth" policies?

Since last week, in Israel there is a group of moderate Russian nationalists in Russia, arrived here at the invitation of a religious-right bloc "Ihud ha-Leumi" ("National Unity"). The leaders of an interregional public association of the National Democratic Alliance (established in March 2010) made several trips to the Holy Land, visited the Knesset, and the memorial complex "Yad Vashem". Following the visit, co-chairman of the movement Ilya Lazarenko came to the conclusion that the Russian nationalists and right-wing Zionists have much in common. "We are very much in common, and first of all - rejection of violent Islamism, which is a threat to civilization - he said the portal IzRus . - We also have some ideological overlap associated with the objectives of nation-building and its operation. Or in a town, for that matter-- here's some anti-Muslim fuckery:
[Link: www.courthousenews.com...]
A federal judge refused to exclude evidence in a lawsuit against an Atlanta suburb that allegedly used rezoning to prevent an Islamic organization from building a larger worship center.
In its federal complaint, the A.G.A. Islamic Organization claimed that Lilburn, Ga., officials repeatedly rejected its application for an expanded Islamic center, despite A.G.A.'s efforts to comply with the city's zoning ordinance.
In 2008, when A.G.A. first applied to expand its worship center onto a nearby property, the city informed the organization that the 3.5-acre lot, which was partially zoned as residential, needed to be rezoned for A.G.A.'s intended use.
Shortly thereafter, A.G.A. claims, the city amended its zoning ordinance to require a 5-acre minimum lot size for religious institutions in districts such as the one A.G.A. sought. The organization canceled its original contract and found a larger property for its expansion plan. Since the new property was zoned as residential, A.G.A. asked the city to rezone it and applied for a special-use permit to build larger facilities, including a gymnasium and a cemetery, according to the complaint.
In November 2009, the city denied A.G.A.'s applications.
Six months after A.G.A. filed its federal lawsuit, the city repealed the 5-acre requirement and amended the zoning ordinance, banning a cemetery within walking distance of A.G.A.'s Islamic Center. In response, A.G.A. submitted a revised plan for a religious facility on a smaller property, without a gym and a cemetery. However, the city once again rejected the amended application.
This is one reason why black churches are often in the middle of nowhere; the white-controlled zoning committees made sure of it.

I never understood the whole "separate dress codes for men and women" idea. Women look perfectly professional wearing pantsuits or dress slacks, the same as men do. Unless your idea is to turn a woman into an object for a male-dominated office to leer at, in which case, there should be sexual harassment lawsuits all around.

No trolling, actually.
That the NSDAP regime was judeophobic is a fact.
That 6 million of specially killed Jews during the Holocaust are a myth - is also a fact.
The method of "proving" the "6 million" is pure hysterics, nothing more. In this myth the ends do not meet.
[Link: ru-gnostik.livejournal.com...]

Jews would be smarter if they admitted that 80% of the "Holocaust" are just inventions of the Allied war propaganda. The war propaganda was never "objective". [...]Being in sound mind, it is difficult to believe that "death camps" were effectively killing Jews up until the 70s, to get to the 6 million victims.
Nowadays even an attempt to get to the bottom of this causes hysterics.

Arab League preparing to ask UN to recognize Palestinian state.
What about the Arab League demanding recognition of a Kurdish state in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq? Or demanding that Syria be held accountable for the mass slaughter of Syrians?
Only thing all these regimes can agree upon is that Israel is a wedge issue that keeps all concerned in business as a relief valve and MacGuffin. It's a shiny object that gets tossed out there when things go bad for Arab regimes (and it's always bad economically and socially, so it remains persistent throughout much of the ME).

Karzai brother service hit by Kandahar suicide bomber
A suicide bomber has killed four people at a memorial service in Kandahar for the assassinated half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Officials say the bomber apparently hid explosives in his turban and detonated them near the entrance of the mosque.
President Karzai was not present at the memorial. Four of his other brothers were but escaped unharmed.

Over Moscow - stormy expanse.
Come to life and people, and greenery.
Day is - the birthday of Adolf.
It means - joy in the sky.Rattled the celestial strings
Continuing flow of rain.
With undiluted bass of Perun
The Führer's name responds.Führer is with us - neither black bones
Nor the poor product of Hollywood.
He - in the discharge of the air
Which baby-clear, as the Buddha. He - a breath of spring tillage,
By a triumphant sky washed clean.
He - the zenith of Kolovrat of Salvation
And a jubilant roar of "Messerschmitt".On Moscow collapsed as a flood
And the baptism of the pagan Spree -
From the volatile mountains of airy Europe,
From the peaks of cloudy Hyperborea.Zeus strikes the golden aegis,
Without giving cheap warranties.
This name is Spartan - Hitler -
Comes to life under the sun, as antique.Führer with us! In the glow of a halo,
Shuddering roofs and grounds,
Sun-faced messenger of Olympus,
Who awakened the mystery of the Race.Führer is alive! Wheel of Helios
Like a tsunami will destroy paranoia.
No, no flocks of geese from Laos -
Returning souls of heroes. What is left is the shifting pile
From banners, and legions and steel -
Doric world of thunder and sun
From the hot ashes will rise.(C) Alexey Shiropaev, 2001

There was a report yesterday from a Reuters reporter, David Cay Johnston, that Fox News got billions of dollars in refunds and didn't pay income taxes for the past couple of years. Well, the reporter admitted that he screwed up Finance 101, and that Fox actually paid those billions in taxes.
"This is a big screw-up on my part," he told Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep earlier today.According to Johnston, "News Corp. reported numbers as positive numbers for cash paid for taxes for three years and then [in 2007] switched to reporting them as negative numbers — that is, as numbers in parentheses. ... And I didn't catch that those were negative numbers."
The company did disclose the accounting change it had made. Johnston said he does not recall if he read the note in its financial reports, and says that the way it was written would not have made him realize what News Corp. had done.
He didn't read the financials correctly, and didn't see that all those numbers in parens were actually losses or taxes paid, not money refunded by the IRS.
Instead of getting $4.8 billion in refunds, that's the amount News Corp paid in taxes on $10.4 billion in pre-tax profits.
Johnson had been with the NYT, and this was actually his first written piece for Reuters since joining the company. Ouch.

Part of the problem apparently is traced back to how News Corp used inconsistent conventions on positive and negative numbers in the same document and that problem is not necessarily confined to News Corp's filings. The SEC allows it, but considering that the numbers were all part of SEC filings, it should be required that all filings and documentation use the same conventions on positive and negative numbers within the filing to avoid this very situation. It makes already confusing documents more so.

On the simplification front, everyone in DC seems to agree that simplification is needed, but the question and the fight is over how to do it without losing tax benefits under the current system.
Every tax credit, every deduction, exemption, or modification helps a given constituency, but adds complexity.
Then, there's the AMT, which is meant to recover taxes paid on high income earners that would otherwise not be collected due to existing credits, deductions, exemptions, etc., that overlays the standard calculations.
Also, the JGTRRA, EGTRRA, ESA of 2008, ARRA of 2009, SBJTA of 2010, and HCR (to name but a few of the major bills from 2000 onwards) all add complexity to the rules by reducing tax rates temporarily, accelerating the tax rate reductions, extending the tax rate reductions, accelerating depreciation, adjusting limits, deductions, credits, etc. It's mind boggling in terms of complexity.

Accounts of what happened last night vary, but the one thing they all agree upon is that Cantor played a lead role in telling the President that revenue increases simply aren’t going to happen, and that Obama didn’t react kindly to it. As Reid’s remarks suggest, Dems now seem to be seizing on this episode to elevate and isolate Cantor — who by many accounts is more adamantly opposed to revenue increases than even Boehner is — as the primary obstacle to compromise.
That’s why Reid is singling out Boehner and McConnell as operating “in good faith,” implicitly suggesting that Cantor isn’t, while simultaneously drawing attention to the grousing among anonymous Republicans that Cantor is damaging the GOP’s credibility and cause. According to one account, even Obama himself privately told Cantor that at this point he seems to be actively looking for ways to scuttle the possibility of compromise. The Dem message this morning is all about driving a wedge between Cantor on one side and Boehner and McConnell on the other by painting the latter two figures as the unlikely new faces of GOP reasonableness and flexibility.

Virginia girl found eating herself in cage in mobile home; parents Brian and Shannon Gore charged
A young girl was found caged and attempting to eat herself in a mobile home in Virginia, and cops say her parents are responsible.
The malnourished girl, believed to be either 5 or 6, was discovered in a crib that was converted into a makeshift cage after police arrived at the home in Gloucester County to investigate a burglary last week.
The girl's parents, Brian and Shannon Gore, were arrested and charged with felony child abuse. The mother was also charged with attempted capital murder.
However, the gruesome twosome now faces first-degree murder charges after the remains of what authorities believe to be another child were found buried outside their mobile home.

I'm not sure that report makes the situation any weirder; only that the police are discounting Levy's claims that he took or intended to take Kletzky to a wedding in Monsey and undermining parts of the confession In other words, they think that he was methodical in his intentions to murder him from the outset. His efforts to dispose of his remains is indicative of intent.
As usual for these kinds of cases, expect Levy's lawyers to consider using some form of an insanity defense when the time comes. Against that is the videotaped confession and the written confession in which he says he is sorry - that indicates that he knows the difference between right and wrong (one of the keys on determining mental state).

I'm not so sure. The more I learn I think it might have been necessary to let these guns move and provide irrefutable proof of where they end up. Even with the iron clad evidence the wingnuts are still trying to prevent any new laws about reporting straw purchases. If the investigation resulted in speculation about what might have happened to these guns the evidence might have been too weak to get any laws passed.

An interesting peek inside the debt negotiations....
Maybe Cantor should have stormed out instead
And here how a GOP aide describes it to me:
Over the last several days the White House has been walking back the savings on the Biden number. Thursday it was $2 trillion, Monday it was $1.7-1.8 trillion, Tuesday it was $1.6-1.7-1.8 trillion. This morning our staff met with White House folks and the wrap up from that meeting said that the WH is now at $1.5 trillion.Given those figures, [Cantor] pointed out that wherever we are- it’s a long way from the $2.4 trillion needed to meet House GOP goals of dollar for dollar so he suggested a possible short-term goal in order to avoid default. He then said to the President that since we can only reach so much in savings and you (President) keep moving the goalposts, I will move off my position of only doing one vote in order to avoid default.
And that’s when Obama started to “lecture” the House Republican majority leader. But either way, it sounds to me like a final deal might be $1.5 trillion in cuts for a debt ceiling extension through the election. In exchange for no tax hikes, Republicans give on their “dollar for dollar” demand.
So it seems Obama is offering them smaller spending cuts as the Republicans continue to stall. The longer they wait, the smaller the cuts. Of course the 4 trillion dollar "Big Deal" cuts are still on the table but if Republicans insist on tax breaks for the rich it may be the only thing they get out of the deal.

Bryan Fischer: No separation between Church and State in the Constitution
According to its website, FFRF exists "to promote the constitutional principle of separation between church and state."Of course the main problem with that mission statement is that the "separation between church and state" is not a constitutional principle at all. You will look in vain for the phrase "separation of church and state" anywhere in the document created by the Founders. You could have found it in the constitution of the old Soviet Union, which ought to tell you something, but it's just not in our founding document at all.
Now there is a wall there, but it is not between church and state. It is a high and impenetrable wall between the state and the church. The state is forbidden by the First Amendment from meddling in the affairs of the church (ed. That would be the same first amendment Brian says doesn't apply to non-Christians. It can't tell it what to believe, how to worship, what to pray, or what to preach from its pulpits.
But there is nothing in the Constitution that prohibits the church from impacting the state, whether it does so by speaking truth to political power, or by advancing its cherished moral ideals in the public square.
