Tech Note: The LGF Image Library App

Your personalized, searchable LGF image collection
LGF • Views: 50,378

We’ve had a feature that lets you upload images to LGF for quite a while; it’s available in the comment posting form, and in the LGF Pages posting window. But as LGF users’ image collections have grown, it became obvious that some way was needed to manage all those images, to let you easily find and reuse images in your comments and Pages.

So today, we’re pleased as punch to announce the launch of the new LGF Image Library app, which lets you see all the images you’ve uploaded, copy/paste their URLs into comments and Pages, and even add searchable descriptions to help find images.

Here’s what it looks like:

(If you’re not signed in to your LGF account, you’ll first see a sign-in form.)

If you click the thumbnail images, they open in a popup window at a larger size. Clicking in the “Image URL” line automatically selects the URL to make it simple to copy it and paste it somewhere else.

The “Description” field lets you enter text to describe the image; it’s a free-form field, and you can write anything you like there, but it’s a good idea to approach it as a series of keywords — because you can then search for images matching words or phrases.

The Image Library uses a boolean search method, which means you can search for single words or phrases enclosed in quotes. You can also use the + and - characters in front of words/phrases to include or exclude them from the search. Search words have to be at least four characters long (because that’s how MySQL’s FULLTEXT search feature works).

The “Clear” button clears the search field and shows all images again; you can also click the words “Image Library” in the header to reset and show everything.

If you’ve uploaded a lot of images to LGF, you’ll probably be surprised to see some of them again; I know I was.

So there you have it! Since it’s a first release there may be bugs, but I’m sure you’ll let me know if you encounter any.

UPDATE at 9/23/12 5:47:45 pm

Just added: a button at the upper right labeled “Upload Image,” and I’ll bet you can guess what it does.

Thank you Charles.

You're welcome - but I have to tell you that if you post another Pat Condell video you're going to lose your account. I haven't worked so hard to turn LGF around just to allow anti-Muslim hate speech in LGF Pages.

This is fair warning.

I am not happy all I can pull up are my dad's WW2 shoulder patch and the railroad warning sign. I cannot pull up my pretzels. Dang.

Thanks for another cool feature. Is there a way to get back before the last 100? I tried a search term or two, art and photography. Came up nothing found.

Searching won't find anything until you enter some descriptions. You can page back and forth with the buttons at top left.

10 Randall Gross  Sun, Sep 23, 2012 2:31:23pm

You can also drag the url to your browser bar to shortcut it.

Now I have three LGF links -- LGF, LGF Post, LGF Image

How does one add descriptions to the URLs posted there, like in the upload box? I C&P and just get:

Oh, I see... the 'Upload Image' window also has a field labeled 'Description'.

That field is actually the text that will be used for your link -- it isn't saved as the image's description, you have to enter that in the Image Library app.

I should probably change the name of that field in the 'Upload Image' window to avoid confusion.

You can create a regular link with the link button, using the Image URL as the URL and whatever text you like. Then add

rel="shadowbox"

to the link code. For example:

<a href="http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/img/targetpractice_worst_of_both_worlds/2012/08/21/shoot-the-dog.jpg" rel="shadowbox">Like so.</a>

Minor Pages bug: When adding a custom style that has a color property, using hex colors works fine as long as they're numbers. When you try to do it with anything that uses letters it fails, however if you use rgb instead, it works:

#777 = works
#39C = fails
rgb(51,153,204) = works

Oh yes -- that's because of the code that automatically turns phrases starting with '#' into Twitter hashtag links. The workaround, as you already discovered, is to use rgb settings instead, or CSS color keywords.

I was dirt poor for about two years, living in the Tenderloin in San Francisco. It was humiliating on a daily basis. Living in terror of any, any, any unexpected expense, because every dollar I had coming was allocated anyway.

I hope I never get complacent enough to forget what that was like, and fool myself, like so many assholes these days, into believing people live in luxury on welfare.

Unlikely. The numbers 1 and 2 teams in the NFC North will be the Packers and Bears (though not necessarily in that order). But the Vikings do look like they can have a winning season, so your husband shouldn't be too unhappy.

I think most Americans have experienced hard times at one time or another.
At the time we don't realize that character is being built inside. But having to survive a rough patch can make you so much stronger. I'll never forget how humbling it was to ask my folks for money because I couldn't afford Christmas presents for the kids. It hurt then and it still hurts thinking back on it.

Why do they always attack dead threads, fear?

LGf has always had a small number of posters who preferred to "put in the last word" on otherwise ended threats. They're 'mostly harmless', but every now and again one of them will DERP badly enough to summon a cadre of lizard warriors to smack them down.

Speaking of Pat Condell, Steyn, and the rest, I see that VDH today jumps on the bandwagon(s) and blends Christian-persecution-by-the-Government with the APOLOGIES!! meme, apparently in an attempt to win a multiple hat trick (APOLOGIES!! + Christian victimization + UN! + ISLAM!!) in wingnut metaphors:

Please, No More Apologies For Free Speech

This week amid the theatrics at the United Nations, let us hope that President Obama and his lieutenants do not persist with the ongoing administration de facto apologies for the views of a crude American filmmaker [...]

What has been especially galling about Secretary of Clinton’s chronic hedging, and the apologies aired on Pakistani television, [...]

Second, Muslim outrage over an amateurish trailer for a probably non-existent video coincides with an ongoing hit Broadway play ridiculing the Mormon Church, the reappearance of the once government-subsidized Piss Christ photos, and so on. When the administration apologizes for the excess of a private individual, but ignores condemnation of far more widely disseminated similar venom, some of it sponsored by the U.S. government, it is making a policy statement — we dare not tamper with free speech unless it touches upon Islam, not out of principle but because of sheer cowardice.

Teacher arrested for sexually assaulting students in Odisha

A government schoolteacher was arrested on Sunday for allegedly having unnatural sex and showing obscene visuals to students from Internet sites in Odisha's Nayagarh district, official sources said.

Chandra Sekhar Choudhury, computer teacher of Navodaya School in Nayagarh, was arrested from Berhampur in Ganjam district on the basis of an FIR lodged by school principal B Hussain Appa,, Nayagarh sub-collector Manas Ranjan Debta said.

According to police, the teacher used to visit hostel of the central government-run boarding school every night and access sites meant for adults in presence of adolescent boys before indulging in unnatural sex with them. In the face of the unabated acts, a few students had gathered courage to raise objection and drew the attention of at least four teachers. However, the teachers, instead of censuring Mr Choudhury, allegedly tried to shield him.

[...]

The implication is that if the male teacher had had sex with underage females, it would have not been a big deal?

Basically, they tried to claim a story about Muslims attacking a Christian housing complex was covered up. re: #165 Obdicut

Aigle, oddly, didn't bother reporting on that bit.

It's at best a bot, but the source used is characteristically a propaganda outlet.

Of course they don't comment on what runs counter to their angle.

Here's a story from today that could (and most likely will be) played multiple ways:

Pak mob sets church ablaze in anti-Islam film protest

A mob of hundreds of Muslim men attacked and burnt an 82-year-old church and an adjoining school in northwest Pakistan during a protest against an anti-Islam film, sparking concerns among the minority Christian community.

The mob broke through the gate of the St Paul's Lutheran Church inside the cantonment in Mardan city, 48 km from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa capital of Peshawar, on Friday while returning from a rally against the film Innocence Of Muslims.

According to reports from Christians in Mardan, the mob attacked and set on fire the church, St Paul's high school, a library, a computer laboratory and houses of four clergymen, including Bishop Peter Majeed.

The mob also damaged and torched moveable property, including a car and three motorcycles. Zeeshan Chand, the 17-year-old son of a pastor, was beaten by the mob and had to be hospitalised in Mardan.

[...]

Well, this event is ugly, no doubt, and it will be piled on by the haters in this country about the unrepentantly evils of Islam and how Pakistan is the enemy of the US, etc..

However, the rest of the story:

[

...]

President Asif Ali Zardari today condemned the burning of the church, saying the ransacking of public and private property, particularly places of worship of other religions, was an "un-Islamic and highly condemnable act".

Zardari noted that the "highly provocative anti-Islam film" had been condemned across the world by Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

However, the ransacking and vandalising of places of worship in retaliation for the film "amounted to playing into the hands" of those who produced the anti-Islam movie.

Zardari called on the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government to take all measures to protect the places of worship of Christians and other minorities and to address their grievances.

[...]

Getting to the reality of the world - it's a big place, and very large nations like Pakistan have many groups that fight between themselves. In this case, the "mob" who attacked the church no doubt has a leader (or leaders) who has taken upon himself to become a local gang-lord and position himself as a power broker.

But that is too complex for the simple minded, which want a single cause for a single effect, and who prefer to see the world only as black and white, and who have a deep (primate, evolutionary driven reproductive) need to fight.

Well, that's what I mean. Aigle=CAMERA. This was not just shitty reporting, this was dishonest reporting. Contemptibly dishonest, trying to turn a story that should inspire hope into a fearmongering one.

I have thought about sending an email to CAMERA asking them in a nice way to please stop spamming of LGF, however if I do that they will just spam me.

Ann Coulter: ‘Civil rights are for blacks–what have we done to the immigrants?’

"I think the way liberals have treated blacks like children and many of their policies have been harmful to blacks, at least they got the beneficiary group right," Coulter said. "There is the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. We don't owe the homeless. We don't owe feminists. We don't owe women who are desirous of having abortions or gays who want to get married to one another. That's what civil rights has become for much of the left."

"Immigrant rights are not civil rights?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"No," Coulter responded, "No. I think civil rights are for blacks. What have we done to the immigrants? We owe black people something. We have a legacy of slavery. Immigrants haven't even been in this country."

An interesting view into what the Syrian rebels are thinking
Syrian rebels said to seek Islamic democracy

Syrian opposition members generally want a democratic government that protects the rights of minorities, though many also want a constitution based on Islam, according to a recent survey.
...
The survey by the International Republican Institute, which trains democracy activists around the world, found high support for a government that "respectfully acknowledges religion" and treats all religions equally. The second most popular model of choice was for a constitution "based on Islam."

"Most of the opposition is Sunni Muslims and they are democratically minded, but they want a government based on some kind of Islamic law or that follows Islamic guidelines," says Elizabeth O'Bagy, an analyst at the Institute for the Study of War who helped the survey writers find contacts in the opposition movement.
...
Respondents were asked to rank their support, on a scale of 1 to 7, of various statements about a future Syrian government.

A government styled on that of France, the United States and Turkey received the highest marks. A government styled on Iran or Iraq received the lowest marks.

They tended to agree that government should protect minorities, even members of President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, atheists and apostates.

One Milwaukee hospital that I know of instituted a"policy change" in 2005 concerning ER care. There's no longer an assurance of medical assistance to patients going in, they revived the 3 policy principle- if you are unconscious, having chest pain, or, if pregnant, your baby is crowning, you will be seen. They now try to refer as many patients as possible to Urgent Cares.

The Family Medical Leave Act passed the House on February 3, 1993, by a vote of 265-163. The final vote passed with 224 "aye" votes from Democrats, compared with 29 "nay" votes. Republicans in the House voted 40-134 against the FMLA.

Ann Coulter is being an idiot again. She's asserted that civil rights are for blacks, not immigrants.

People are people, and the point of civil rights was and is that people are legally equal. There's some idea in there about having certain rights because you are a people, like the right to own your heart and mind, and the right to speak what you feel to be the truth, without regard to your skin color. Something about being treated the same by our government. Help me out here, I'm floundering around trying to express what I think.

Oh, and the right not to be victimized with impunity, which many illegal immigrants are.

The stress of just scraping by from week to week is incredible because you know it's a delicate balancing act and if one tiny thing comes crashing down, others are sure to follow. You can find yourself destitute & homeless within a matter of weeks...back at zero and needing to climb UP just to reach hand-to-mouth subsistence.

It's not fun. No one wants to be in that situation, but it's very difficult to get out of if you have other responsibilities. Then people come along and treat you like it's because you're irresponsible & shiftless, just looking for a handout. Gawd, that makes me so mad I could spit!

There's a lot to be said for this. If 45 million people are on food stamps, that's about 15% of the country.

Assuming that the official unemployment rate is 8%, it follows (at least to me) that there are a significant number of people who are both working *and* on food stamps.

It really doesn't speak very highly of the "job creators" when they won't pay an employee enough to put decent food on the table.

One can wear conservative stripes proudly and still be in favor of good government.

Conversely, I spent the last five months working (as as a legal secretary) for a Republican state senator, and more than once I suggested events where I thought he could increase his visibility for this fall's election.

He's a die-hard Republican, but moderate enough to be seriously considered for endorsement by the state employee agency union, and I got to see first-hand the time he spent and efforts he made on behalf of his constituents.

If I'm still here in town come November, I honestly don't know whether I'll pull the lever for him -- but I can say without hesitation that I would not be ashamed to do so.

Attack in Libya Was Major Blow to C.I.A. Efforts

Among the more than two dozen American personnel evacuated from the city after the assault on the American mission and a nearby annex were about a dozen C.I.A. operatives and contractors, who played a crucial role in conducting surveillance and collecting information on an array of militant armed groups in and around the city.

“It’s a catastrophic intelligence loss,” said one American official who has served in Libya and who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the F.B.I. is still investigating the attack. “We got our eyes poked out.”

I lived hard...grew up in an upper middle class family, and completely divorced myself from them and their money when I met my first wife...too proud to reach out to them, we registered as medically indigent when she got sick. That meant, instead of making a phone call and seeing a GP or even a specialist within a couple of days, we had to wait until she was in so much pain she couldn't stand it anymore, and then we got to spend six or eight hours in an emergency waiting room while she writhed in pain before she was triaged in (behind gunshot victims, accident victims, and anyone with health insurance).

I wouldn't dream of letting anyone have to go through that. Ever. And yes, I did it by choice, and it was a stupid fucking choice. Pride is a motherfucker.

I'm aware of the dangers, but dwelling on them is not going to help me. I've got to keep positive and get the job.

What are you looking for? Another sales job? Something else? Some suggestions (the fact that I think you're a political retard notwithstanding, these are serious):
1. Call your customer base(please tell me you were smart enough to keep their contact info on something that wasn't company property). You may not want to do this long term, but this latest gig is enough to make you a subject matter expert. You could probably make good money working for one of your former customers, and because they know you, you don't have to deal with being an anonymous resume. That's your fastest route to a new job. I got FIRED (all caps, because I fucked up) from a software company, and the next day I called their biggest customer - within five days I was on an open contract at $70 an hour - a living wage, yes.

2. Call your customers - they're your network. Ask them if they know of any of their clients who could use your skills and get them to introduce you.

3. Call recruiters - don't send them resumes, get face to face meetings with recruiters in your area, and sit down with them to talk about what positions they're trying to fill with the express intent of helping them fill one.

Looking for a new job sucks, but it's not hard. You just have to do the footwork. That may mean missing out on some facebook/LFG/twitter time during normal business hours, but there's no reason it should take you eight hours a day five days a week. Put two or three hours a day into it...dedicated time. Think about what you want, but be open to short term solutions to keep the wolf from the door.

The 3rd I am doing, the other two I can't really do. All the customers I signed save one were far outside the Chicago area, and and I didn't keep customer lists offsite. I have reconstructed data for a few customers, but they couldn't help me unless I relocated, which I cannot do.

re: #322 darthstar

Oh, and always build your rolodex. I guarantee your professional contacts are doing the same. Join LinkedIn if you haven't already, and look up people at companies you've sold to...they're easy as sin to find there. Make contact with them. Often, they list their personal email or phone number, so you have a way of contacting them, and you know their work history (knowledge is power). Social networking isn't a passive exercise.

I'm already on Linkedin, I often used it as a leads source.

Bullshit. They're companies...they hire remote people all the time. Some will have satellite offices in Chicago (it's a MAJOR FUCKING INTERNATIONAL HUB FOR UNITED AIRLINES for crying out loud). Some of them may need a footprint in your area. CREATE the opportunity, or don't. The choice is yours.

I get four or five calls a week from recruiters. They're not bad resources, and having lunch with one is often a great way to get yourself known to people hiring. Recruiters are sales people selling shit they've never seen, for the most part. If they call a company and say, "I've got a candidate and this guy took the time to hunt me down so I'd know who I was representing" it goes a lot further than "Here's a resume of a great candidate I found."

But it means taking the time to schmooze with people who may not be able to help you immediately (best to think of it as an investment of your time). I send one recruiter who got me into two different jobs a six-pack of beer every Xmas -even though I haven't used him in seven years.

I see the article, but it doesn't include military families.

Looking around, there are two sets of numbers: Active duty military families on food stamps, and food stamps being spent at the commissary. You just have to have been in the military to shop at the commissary. My husband has memories of driving to one in the years after his dad got out of the Air Force to shop because the prices are good.

This article is frightening, though:

There's a lot to be said for this. If 45 million people are on food stamps, that's about 15% of the country.

Assuming that the official unemployment rate is 8%, it follows (at least to me) that there are a significant number of people who are both working *and* on food stamps.

It really doesn't speak very highly of the "job creators" when they won't pay an employee enough to put decent food on the table.

My wife is an RN. We qualify for food stamps & Badgercare. There is a boat load of things wrong with the US economy right now and one party is trying to tell me that "things aren't bad enough, let's make things worse."

Once upon a time, when I lived in Eau Claire, it was represented by Steve Gunderson. He was an old school decent Republican who came in on Reagan's coattails but earned his keep as a good congressman. He was eventually forced out after being outed (with a single partner for longer than most marrages of his generation...). Even as a Socialist, I could vote for him over the idiots the Democratic Party kept trying to run against him. It didn't hurt that I had first hand knowledge of his ability to think and change his mind when presented with evidence - and to do so publicly.

Hope he's doing well where ever he is these days.

I'm at the receiving end of a lot of recruiters, most of which appear not to have read my resume at all. Their first instinct is to ask if you can come in to the office for an interview. My usual response is when you have an opportunity that I think might be a good fit, I'll come in, because usually it's blow smoke up your ass for half an hour about what a great candidate you are and then nothing.

Voting laws may disenfranchise 10 million Hispanic U.S. citizens: study

New voting laws in 23 of the 50 states could keep more than 10 million Hispanic U.S. citizens from registering and voting, a new study said on Sunday, a number so large it could affect the outcome of the November 6 election.

The Latino community accounts for more than 10 percent of eligible voters nationally. But the share in some states is high enough that keeping Hispanic voters away from the polls could shift some hard-fought states from support for Democratic President Barack Obama and help his Republican rival, Mitt Romney.

The new laws include purges of people suspected of not being citizens in 16 states that unfairly target Latinos, the civil rights group Advancement Project said in the study to be formally released on Monday.

Laws in effect in one state and pending in two others require proof of citizenship for voter registration. That imposes onerous and sometimes expensive documentation requirements on voters, especially targeting naturalized American citizens, many of whom are Latino, the liberal group said.

QUESTION: We love you Paul. But I’m getting long in years. Will you address the death panels that we’re going to have?

RYAN: The death panels, well! That’s not the word I’d choose to use to describe it. It’s actually called. It’s actually called, so in Medicare, what I refer to as this board of 15 bureaucrats. It’s called the Independent Payment Advisory Board. It sounds fairly innocuous.

Hehe... DEATH PANELS!

On top of all that:

Some conservatives want a bigger role for Ryan in campaign

Paul Ryan Tells Florida Seniors That Obamacare Includes Death Panels

The Thinkprogress headline is deceptive: Paul Ryan never said "death panels", the man asking him a question did.

That's pretty much what the base thought was gonna happen when Ryan got put on the ticket, that he was coming along with his budget and all his views. Instead, he got shuffled to the back and treated like the albatross he is.

The man asked if there were death panels, Ryan said yes.

I had some experience early this year with trying to get help at clinics.

Allow me to report to Mr. Romney that it is not a very effective approach. I especially liked the part where the Free Clinic told me to bugger off because I'd had the cold too long, and they were afraid to treat it.

I cannot reply properly to this now, as I cannot access the article I planned to post. I'll see if I can pick this issue up again tomorrow.

Its pretty cut and dry, just look at what Ryan said:

QUESTION: We love you Paul. But I’m getting long in years. Will you address the death panels that we’re going to have?

RYAN: The death panels, well! That’s not the word I’d choose to use to describe it. It’s actually called. It’s actually called, so in Medicare, what I refer to as this board of 15 bureaucrats. It’s called the Independent Payment Advisory Board. It sounds fairly innocuous.

"Are there going to be death panels?"

"Well, they're not called death panels, they're called this, but they exist."

I can't imagine why anyone would think ERs or even free clinics would be a good or cost effective way of treating most medical conditions-especially chronic conditions.

Because the free market, that's why.

Or something.

I learned that early on in my parenting career, asthma is one of the worst conditions to treat using the ER, along with HBP and Diabetes. The acute and scary nature of these diseases makes the role of primary care so vital.

Particularly the "or something". What drives me particularly crazy is the ability of many conservatives to combine Christian faith with a complete lack of empathy for the poor and/or uninsured. At least they could be honest about their every man for himself philosophy.

Basically, they've all read Ayn Rand, and just like they do with the Bible, they've glossed over the parts they don't like.

I always find it hilarious when people profess love for her books and philosophy and a deep Christian faith at the same time. Have they actually paid attention to any of what she said?

Yes they have. It's the other bits that they pretend to have read because society says they have to. But their hate, pain & shame shows through loud and clear anyway... :( It's why I always tell so many of these so called christians that I pray they'll someday be born again. Pisses them off, but God knows they need it.
