Foraging update:

In my long walk today came across a particular good plant of Carissa macrocarpa, far away enough from a main road so that the fruit was pretty clean.

Picked a few of what was left - most were already too ripe - and they were the best I’ve ever eaten. They have a cranberry-like flavor and if eaten too early in the season can be astringent, but these were quite near going rotten - but not quite - just very tasty, better than I’ve had from other plants of this species.

Most people here in SoCal don’t eat the fruit probably because they don’t know it is edible. The plant is likely poisonous, being an Apocynaceae, but the ripe fruit is not.

It has not been a good year, though, for many citrus. The oranges are small, and many trees have dropped their fruit. Growers I’ve talked to are frustrated. Plus some citrus fruit are suffering die-back. The extreme prolonged heat wave in autumn probably caused these problems.

The local avocado trees were hit by the frost a few days ago but they’ll survive. The loquat trees on the whole look promising - many had heavy flowering, but there were a lack of bees I had noticed, but enough were around to do the job. The past few months have proved to be only a so-so season for the Feijoa, and the Opuntia around here had somewhat fewer fruit than the previous year.

Not the best of years here in the Avocado belt.

He’s one of my favorite all time non Orioles. Just played the game with a quiet dignity for a long time. I’m not surprised to hear of his passing since his wife recently passed.

No, I guess I’m used to correctly placed sections, like in a circle. These were very irregular, all over the place.

My late grandmother LOVED him, referred to him as “MY Stanley”. They were both the children of Polish immigrants born a few years apart who came to make the St. Louis area home over the course of many decades. My grandparents were regulars at Musial’s old restaurant, they even hosted my uncle’s rehearsal dinner there! She passed away about 5 years ago…would be nice if she has another chance to express her admiration for Stan the Man tonight.

Ahmed Dogan, head of the country’s ethnic Turkish party, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) was in the midst of speaking at the conference when a man identified as 25-year-old Oktai Enimehmedov rushed the stage and pointed a gas pistol at Dogan’s head.

The footage shows the gun seemingly misfiring, giving Dogan an opening to bat at the gun before getting away. Enimehmedov is then brought to the ground by security guards, and also attacked by delegates. Dogan was not injured in the attack.

CBC News reported that the gas pistol is usually a non-lethal weapon, but can allegedly cause “life-threatening injuries” if fired at close range. The gunman also allegedly carried two knives.

Public support for liberalizing marijuana laws is at an all-time high, and as of the November election, 18 states have legalized the drug, either for medical or recreational purposes. Law enforcement, however, seems unmoved by the legalization movement. According to a new FBI report, police arrested more people for marijuana possession than for violent crime in 2011.

The Huffington Post reports:

In 2011, marijuana possession arrests totaled 663,032 — more than arrests for all violent crimes combined. Possession arrests have nearly doubled since 1980, according to an FBI report, while teen marijuana use recently reached a 30-year high.

I’m reading Destiny of a Nation, about the Garfield assassination, right now. It’s kind of horrid to read how Garfield’s injury wasn’t that bad, but unhygienic probing of the wound pretty much killed him. There seems to be something else at play here at LGF though. Some people seem to feel a sort of ownership of this place. It’s kind of odd because it’s not particularly unique in the sense of being a community—i.e. there are other forums where people form close bonds and get together IRL to help one another or just to meet each other (either as a group or individually).

I’d never seen them until I moved till Ottawa. They can be mean little buggers…

Yeah, squirrels’ cuteness is deceiving. They can be thieving, ill-tempered little twits and on several occasions I’ve seen them tease cats, both on the ground and (with my indoor cats) by climbing up the side of the building just out of reach of the window and flicking their tail & chattering at them, which I assume was the squirrel equivalent of “neener-neener you can’t catch meeee!”

“During the interviews with Carter’s fellow shift officers, which were done separately for each officer, several of the officers reported independently that in a shift briefing meeting on 12/26/12 Officer Carter mentioned that he was planning on killing the elk,” the arrest warrant affidavit said.

Too bad none of them thought to talk him out of it.

They knew the Delano house far too well. It was where Christian Philip Oberender, then 14 years old, had murdered his mother in a shotgun ambush in the family rec room in 1995.

Now, 18 years later, Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson was sending his deputies back to the home where Oberender still lives. Just two days earlier, Olson had scanned the day’s shift reports and froze when he tripped over Oberender’s name. A scan of a Facebook page then showed firearms spread out like a child’s trophies on a bed inside the home, along with notes about the Newtown, Conn., gunman who shot 20 children to death.

What Olson’s deputies found in the home was chilling: 13 guns, including semi-automatic rifles, an AK-47, a Tommy gun, assorted shotguns and handguns, including a .50-caliber Desert Eagle.

Even though Oberender killed his mother with a firearm, even though he was committed to the state hospital in St. Peter as mentally ill and dangerous more than a decade ago, he was able to obtain a permit to purchase firearms last May. That piece of paper gave Oberender, now 32, the ability to walk into any licensed Minnesota retailer and buy any assault weapon or pistol on the rack.

The squirrels at my brother’s place do that to the shed cats. The cats get the last laugh and a meal since sitting 10’ up the tree on a horizontal branch in order to scold a cat is unfortunately a very good target angle for a pellet rifle shot.

The cats now turn up every time you fire the pellet rifle since it potentially indicates a rodent meal being delivered up.
