Foraging update:
In my long walk today came across a particular good plant of Carissa macrocarpa, far away enough from a main road so that the fruit was pretty clean.
Picked a few of what was left - most were already too ripe - and they were the best I’ve ever eaten. They have a cranberry-like flavor and if eaten too early in the season can be astringent, but these were quite near going rotten - but not quite - just very tasty, better than I’ve had from other plants of this species.
Most people here in SoCal don’t eat the fruit probably because they don’t know it is edible. The plant is likely poisonous, being an Apocynaceae, but the ripe fruit is not.
It has not been a good year, though, for many citrus. The oranges are small, and many trees have dropped their fruit. Growers I’ve talked to are frustrated. Plus some citrus fruit are suffering die-back. The extreme prolonged heat wave in autumn probably caused these problems.
The local avocado trees were hit by the frost a few days ago but they’ll survive. The loquat trees on the whole look promising - many had heavy flowering, but there were a lack of bees I had noticed, but enough were around to do the job. The past few months have proved to be only a so-so season for the Feijoa, and the Opuntia around here had somewhat fewer fruit than the previous year.
Not the best of years here in the Avocado belt.

Don’t know what you mean by “messed up”.
This is the season for picking many kinds of grapefruit here in San Diego county.
One neighbor of mine who specializes in citrus for his yard says a lot of his navel oranges have dropped early, being rotten inside. Is that what happened to your grapefruit?

No, I guess I’m used to correctly placed sections, like in a circle. These were very irregular, all over the place.

Most citrus fruit I eat by just quartering them and scarfing up the good parts.
When I was a kid I often ate grapefruit for breakfast, cut in half and carefully cut the segments, to scoop out with a spoon. These days I’ve reverted to a more primitive style of eating citrus:

Lufgt Huron, the Tyrant of Badab, was the Chapter Master of the Astral Claws Space Marine Chapter and the Imperial Governor of the world of Badab Primaris in the Maelstrom Zone of the Ultima Segmentum. Huron Blackheart, as he became known, ultimately turned to Chaos in his ambitious pursuit of power and corrupted most of his Chapter as well, leading them in a rebellion against the Imperium of Man that was known as the Badab War (901-912.M41). At present he is the Chaos Lord known as Huron Blackheart, who leads the surviving Astral Claws as a warband of piratical Chaos Space Marines called the Red Corsairs. They dwell within the swirling madness of the Maelstrom. Blackheart has slowly built an empire amongst the Renegades and Heretics of that great Warp Rift that will soon rival the strength of the Forces of Chaos that call the Eye of Terror home.

My late grandmother LOVED him, referred to him as “MY Stanley”. Bulgarian assassination attempt airs on television
Ahmed Dogan, head of the country’s ethnic Turkish party, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) was in the midst of speaking at the conference when a man identified as 25-year-old Oktai Enimehmedov rushed the stage and pointed a gas pistol at Dogan’s head.
The footage shows the gun seemingly misfiring, giving Dogan an opening to bat at the gun before getting away. Enimehmedov is then brought to the ground by security guards, and also attacked by delegates. Dogan was not injured in the attack.
CBC News reported that the gas pistol is usually a non-lethal weapon, but can allegedly cause “life-threatening injuries” if fired at close range. The gunman also allegedly carried two knives.

Police Made More Arrests For Marijuana Possession Than For Violent Crime
Public support for liberalizing marijuana laws is at an all-time high, and as of the November election, 18 states have legalized the drug, either for medical or recreational purposes. Law enforcement, however, seems unmoved by the legalization movement. According to a new FBI report, police arrested more people for marijuana possession than for violent crime in 2011.
The Huffington Post reports:
In 2011, marijuana possession arrests totaled 663,032 — more than arrests for all violent crimes combined. Possession arrests have nearly doubled since 1980, according to an FBI report, while teen marijuana use recently reached a 30-year high.

Tony Campolo, well known for stirring up debate in American Evangelical circles, last week wrote an article “Is Evangelicalism Headed for a Split?” in which he writes, among other things:
[…]
Finally, there is a political divide insofar as a significant majority of Evangelicals operate under the assumption that if you are not committed to the Republican Party, you can hardly call yourself an Evangelical, and perhaps you even ought not to call yourself a Christian. I have heard, as all of us have, certain voices who have suggested that to be a Christian is, post facto, to be a Republican, given what the Republican Party stands for and what the Democratic Party stands for. Needless to say, there are a number of Evangelicals who disagree with that kind of judgment.
[…]
Campolo’s article is him trying to wire together a multi-sided argument about a coming split in “Evangelicalism”, an idea about which one commenter over at Patheos concisely and dryly dismisses:
J.L. Schafer says:
Jan 17, 2013 @ 10:03 at 10:03 AM
I doubt that the evangelical movement is unified enough to have a dramatic split.
Anyway, what strikes me as noticeable about the Campolo piece is that other American “evangelicals” are indeed being put off by the increasingly, stridently, political lurch to the right of many congregations and religious leaders.
I think the NRA blow-back on their tin-eared approach to the Sandy Hook massacre is adding fuel to this division. A great many right-wing religious writers have lamented that they couldn’t keep some “Christians” and “Evangelicals” from voting for Obama (because in these writers minds Obama == Evil.)
The best thing we can do, I propose, is to continue mocking and prodding the far right as they become increasingly narrow in their outlook. By demonstrating how truly atavistic or extreme many of these wingnuts are others Americans, who frankly are either too busy or too lazy to pay attention, will begin to notice that there are people out there claiming to speak for them who are in nature reprehensible.

That doesn’t work. Charlie Sheen knows how to laugh at himself too well. He could never say Romney’s ‘47%’ speech with the required cluelessness.

You know, those two have not been done justice in Hollywood for either large screen or TV. The story of both killers are classic tales of men gone wrong. You’d think someone could come up with a good script for at least one of the events.

In the case of Charles Guiteau’s shooting of Garfield, it was witnessed by several people and Guiteau admitted to having done it.
/literalism
I’m reading Destiny of a Nation, about the Garfield assassination, right now. It’s kind of horrid to read how Garfield’s injury wasn’t that bad, but unhygienic probing of the wound pretty much killed him. And the primary physician totally dissed the younger ones who were into Lister’s ideas about not jamming filthy fingers into wounds.
Conspiracy hay could be made with this, I think.

McKinley was shot by an anarchist. I always thought a movie about the anarchists, the REAL anarchists, not V For Vendetta, would be fun to watch, with lots of explosions.

You know what I would do if there were a blog online where I found the content and the commenters consistently not to my liking, the way Buck apparently feels around here? I would stop visiting that blog.
Same here. I came across LGF several times before things changed; didn’t like it, moved on. Ditto some other non-political forums; they either weren’t a good fit for me or they changed in a way I didn’t like, so I simply moved on (I had already established other types of contact with the people I didn’t want to “lose”).
There seems to be something else at play here at LGF though. Some people seem to feel a sort of ownership of this place. It’s kind of odd because it’s not particularly unique in the sense of being a community—i.e. there are other forums where people form close bonds and get together IRL to help one another or just to meet each other (either as a group or individually).

Cool..The Place I bought up north has a few black squirrels. Rare to see.
Evidently they are native to Boston
They are cool looking, a bit smaller and much sleeker then the greys
I thought may be they were trying to fit in with the skunks, of which we have many

I saw them in NYC one day. Forgot the borough.
Really? Cool. All I ever see are the brownish gray ones, and man do they ever have attitude. In queens we used to have a whole family of raccoons in the backyard (not to mention at least half a dozen stray cats we’d feed).

Boulder police officers Sam Carter, 35, and Brent Curnow, 38, turned themselves in to the Boulder County Jail on Friday morning and were booked on suspicion of forgery, tampering with physical evidence, attempting to influence a public official — all felonies — as well as unlawful taking of a trophy elk, conspiracy, a Samson surcharge, killing an elk out of season, unlawful
210 | Gus Sat, Jan 19, 2013 8:46:25pm |
Carter also applied for a road kill permit for the elk with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, saying the elk had broken an antler off, while investigators believe Curnow had sawed the antler off.

Yeah, squirrels’ cuteness is deceiving. They can be thieving, ill-tempered little twits and on several occasions I’ve seen them tease cats, both on the ground and (with my indoor cats) by climbing up the side of the building just out of reach of the window and flicking their tail & chattering at them, which I assume was the squirrel equivalent of “neener-neener you can’t catch meeee!”

Oh boy.
Murderous ‘monster’ acquires an arsenal
They knew the Delano house far too well. It was where Christian Philip Oberender, then 14 years old, had murdered his mother in a shotgun ambush in the family rec room in 1995.
Now, 18 years later, Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson was sending his deputies back to the home where Oberender still lives. Just two days earlier, Olson had scanned the day’s shift reports and froze when he tripped over Oberender’s name. A scan of a Facebook page then showed firearms spread out like a child’s trophies on a bed inside the home, along with notes about the Newtown, Conn., gunman who shot 20 children to death.
What Olson’s deputies found in the home was chilling: 13 guns, including semi-automatic rifles, an AK-47, a Tommy gun, assorted shotguns and handguns, including a .50-caliber Desert Eagle.
…
Even though Oberender killed his mother with a firearm, even though he was committed to the state hospital in St. Peter as mentally ill and dangerous more than a decade ago, he was able to obtain a permit to purchase firearms last May. That piece of paper gave Oberender, now 32, the ability to walk into any licensed Minnesota retailer and buy any assault weapon or pistol on the rack.
…

The squirrels at my brother’s place do that to the shed cats. The cats get the last laugh and a meal since sitting 10’ up the tree on a horizontal branch in order to scold a cat is unfortunately a very good target angle for a pellet rifle shot.
The cats now turn up every time you fire the pellet rifle since it potentially indicates a rodent meal being delivered up.

I doubt it was just that. She seemed to have other things going on too, judging by some of her comments, so maybe it just all piled up and got to be too much (with your comment being the proverbial “last straw”, though I know you didn’t mean it the way she took it).
Yeah. The comment wasn’t directed at anyone so it wasn’t intended as being defensive. I stopped watching the master spy after that day and decided to stop reading, as much as possible, certain threads in the pages. Like Sergey said about the topic of Israel, it is a Pandora’s box.

It’s a very heated issue. I usually go out of my way to avoid discussion about it even though I of course read what’s going on and what the most willful have to say.

Meh, there’s only a couple of people who use that tactic, and I know better than to react to it. When you get emotional caution and reason tend to fly out the window, and I have no intention of allowing myself to be baited to the point where I say something stupid because I’m angry or hurt.

Yeah, that’s actually part of why I grew more silently respective. When I took Irish history in Galway, my professor was a native of the poor and Catholic section of Belfast. I’m sure he had his feelings on the Troubles but he was professional. He even gave us an essay to read that was a different perspective on Cromwell than the usual Irish Catholic one because he wanted us to look at all perspectives. I figure if someone like that can be professional, there’s no reason I shouldn’t be especially about an issue that doesn’t effect any of my relations and if it does, they’re very distant ones.

Yeah ethnic grudges can be silly especially if you’re a mutt like me and they contradict themselves. Now at the same time, I have no shame in being Irish American, etc but I will never use that as a superiority thing either. Now, I do get a little emotionally involved reading about the Roma people of Europe because it seems like very few want to stand up for them there. But I’m not to the point where I return hate with hate because that’s the worst thing you can do. I’m also sensitive to reading about the neo-fascists because it feels like they want to march down some of the same paths of history that shouldn’t be marched down again.

If you hate your enemies as much as some of them hate you, I really think you become more like them which is probably why there’s the circular political spectrum theory. What I like most about this place is two things:
1. The primary focus is anti-idiot. You are allowed to make your case about nearly anything, but it had better be backed up by researched facts.
2. As a community it has a broad base of experiences, backgrounds, and view points. Thus, it’s a window on places and people I would otherwise probably never get a glimpse of.

The wounds never really heal. Hell, you’ve got some people here in this country who still aren’t over Appomattox and Lee surrendered nearly 150 years ago. All this happening before 80%+ of my family arrived and I’m third generation plus on all sides. So yeah, I don’t get some of my fellow Southerners obsession with reliving the war. It was a tragedy. It’s okay with me if they want to be proud of their ancestors individually but I don’t want to hear about how the CSA was a noble cause. Let’s not sugarcoat what the CSA were. They were traitors.

Haha Hoops, I had this one dream where I was half of this singing couple in the early 60’s. Got to go to the White House and meet Jack Kennedy and Jackie O. My favorite all time dream was when I knew I was in the dream and I told the girl near me on the street that I knew I was in one but asked her if she still would go out with me regardless. I’ve also done some “time traveling” in dreams too. Like I’ll tell myself, I want to wake up in third grade. And I guess this is part of the aftermath of graduation but I still get the dreams where I haven’t finished school yet. Wake up filling unfulfilled and then I think a couple minutes- hey I have a BA!

I really resented his attempts to call Obama an Anti-Semite even though he had nothing at all to base it on other than his own hate of Obama. I really resent McCain for making him and Palin relevant.

Would have been 2010. I was still pretty weird on and off in 2009. Politically weird that is. I’m still weird.
I read comments here a few times in the run-up to the 2008 election. Probably following a link from DailyKos since I was reading political articles there as well. Registered in 2009. And now I am here all the time and just read DailyKos stuff rarely. Too high an idiot factor in the comments there for my taste to be worth wading through all the mire to find the good stuff. I have better luck following links from here.

He suffers sometimes from what I call political convert’s zeal. I see it more with religious converts but I’ve seen it with politics where the political converter becomes more fanatical those who had always been the ideology. It’s kind of how Reagan ended up being more conservative than Nixon, Ford, and Bush I despite having come to the Republican party and conservatism old in life. Kos isn’t too bad I guess though. Not really my cup of tea but he’s not a terrible monster either like some of his detractors will make him out to be. He’s more center-left than far-left. I will say even though he makes right on points, I am not high on Bill Maher. He’s got a certain smugness I don’t like and I really don’t like his anti vax crap. I don’t know much about science I admit but I really resent people with little scientific background trying to tell me that I am on the autistic spectrum due to vaccines.

Conservatives are always surprised when they find out that Markos is both ex-conservative and military. I forget totally the details but if I remember reading right, I think it was the Reagan administration’s crap with the Contras that turned him more left. I know he’s El Salvadorian on his mother’s side so he probably hated being told that those far right guerrillas were freedom fighters on par with our own founding fathers which I realize was Reagan’s statement about the Nicaraguian contras in specific.

I remember first hearing about them as we know them in gosh 2009ish because I swear I remember some of them saying “Tea Bag your Congressman.” I was still in college at the time so I text messaged my Dad as a gaffe- “Hey Dad, these guys want us to teabag our Congressman.” My Dad being my Dad responds “Well what does he look like?” “He’s really old.” What a weird movement it’s turned out to be. What I like most about this place is two things:
1. The primary focus is anti-idiot. You are allowed to make your case about nearly anything, but it had better be backed up by researched facts.2. As a community it has a broad base of experiences, backgrounds, and view points. Thus, it’s a window on places and people I would otherwise probably never get a glimpse of.
I joined this site when it was a lot more conservative, but not idiotic echo-chamber conservative, the arguments presented here were most always soundly formulated.
And even back then, flamers and trolls were not tolerated.

I’ve talked to some licensed gun dealers the last couple of days. They have little doubt that the current gun buying frenzy is being fueled by speculation. It is becoming a classic investment bubble. At first this involved gun-savvy dealers buying up the weapons that will probably be targeted for regulation, the so-called assault rifles and the like. Now, though, a lot of ill-informed yuppie types have scented some easy profits and started snapping up every gun they could get their paws on, utterly heedless of how gun control is likely to work. These are basically the same type of greed crazed fools who fell for the dot.com bubble of the 90s and the absurd classic car bubble of the 80s. May they lose their ill-matched silk shirts again, it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.
I’ll make a prediction: Six months from now, after the bubble has burst, you’ll see new ARs going for $600 (though possibly with smaller mags), and even better buys on traditional guns that were never threatened with new regulations but were snapped up by speculators anyway. You may see the speculators begging for spare change outside Academy Sporting Goods. Ignore them.

McKinley was shot by an anarchist. I always thought a movie about the anarchists, the REAL anarchists, not V For Vendetta, would be fun to watch, with lots of explosions.
Hollywood wouldn’t know how to make that sort of movie. It’d be beyond them to figure out how to depict people who were ‘left’ but very wrong, and thanks to Glenn Beck most on the right would class both TR and Wilson (whose administrations fought the anarchists) as “evil Progressives”.

Just so. Hollywood has a problem with depicting people who might have had a good idea or legitimate grievance but who chose to act on that motivation wrongly. It seems to need to elevate such a person, rather than treat them as the Fallen individual they really are.

Egypt busts massive explosive haul heading for Gaza
Egyptian authorities have seized a record 1 tonne of explosives bound for the Palestinian Gaza Strip, a security official said Sunday, DPA reported.
The official, who requested anonymity, said the explosives were seized when a suspicious-looking lorry was searched at a checkpoint between mainland Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula, which borders Gaza and Israel. The shipment was the largest single haul of explosives captured by Egyptian authorities in Sinai, which has been the scene of turmoil in recent months.
Police have seized a total of 5 tonnes of explosives as well as disassembled rockets and automatic weapons in the past three months, according to local media reports.
Egyptian authorities say the weapons are shipped from Libya, which is awash with arms, and smuggled into Gaza by gangs operating in Sinai.

Yeah, this.
Another point — a lot of the people who own guns are irresponsible with them, which leads to these kinds of accidents in the first place.
Maybe if the NRA focused their efforts on that instead of making up shit about Obama coming to TAKE YER GUNZ OMG they’d actually be doing a public service.

Despite their claims, they do not exist primarily to provide a public service, their chief agenda point is to promote gun sales.

Maybe you already saw this video collection of firearms mishaps. While they try to make it look like a bit on America’s Funniest Videos, each of these scenes could have been a tragedy with a slightly different set of circumstances. This is how people end up dead f*ing around with guns.

That’s something I’d like to see: Stats comparing national averages to those where the people living in the home have all gone through gun safety or firearms training programs. Because I’d bet $20 that in such a home the risk of gun accidents is a lot lower.

Apology accepted. I do understand the emotions and anger.
Your response is a clarion example of why the work to properly legislate gun possession and purchase is going to be a lot harder than necessary. All this anti gun sound and fury intended to push back on any and all efforts to support gun rights (reasonable or not) just delays the result and makes poorly written law like what we got out of NY now passed.
I refuse to sit quietly between opposite hostile advocates.
“Now is the time for gun control” Maybe an extra bit of time to remember to exempt sworn police officers and armored truck guards would have been better. Maybe not waiting in the wings for another massacre was not such a great approach.
What really frustrates me is the two years between the individual right ruling from SCOTUS and serious legislative efforts. That (two years ago) was the time. Before these shootings, when even the advocates were relatively calm.

“The statesman’s task is to hear God’s footsteps marching through history, and to try and catch on to His coattails as He marches past. ”

What the Iron Chancellor was saying that in reference to was that most times are “periods of muddle” when major policy shifts aren’t really possible and that leaders need to be ready to see the direction of things and take advantage of openings when they appear.
Obama could not have acted after the MacDonald decision because no moderate policy was likely to find favor in such a time. You mean the same two years when the teabagger GOP was more determined to make Obama a one term president than to do their job in Congress? The same two years where POTUS ended up negotiating with himself to get anything passed at all?
Please. We both know that no matter when any action was proposed by this President, the advocates would have gone from “relatively calm” to saying the same shit they’re saying now.
Let me be a bit more detailed and I hope informative.
The same two years when the states and counties and cities (where most gun control regulation actually resides) did little but delay and seek workarounds to keep the most egregious violations of reasonable gun control in place. The work needed to start then.
States & localities regulate possession, storage, transfer and use of firearms. And cars. And dangerous tools and machines. It was not the Feds that violated the 2nd. so badly as to end a century of deliberate silence on the 2nd from the court. It was DC. A local authority.

So did you see the changes implemented at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh NC after the mysterious accidental shooting yesterday that wounded 3 innocent gun aficionados?
The Dixie Gun and Knife Show will continue as planned but there will be no private gun sales allowed, and personal guns will not be allowed on property. Gun sales will be allowed only by licensed dealers within the confines of the Jim Graham Building
Get them crazy motherfuckers out of here. Licensed dealers only! Jeebus Christ they’re gonna kill someone!!

Doesn’t matter where it would have started. As soon as any noise about gun control starts, the gun lobby immediately starts with THEY’RE TAKIN’ YER GUNZ and the idiots and rubes fall in line. Things go nowhere, fast. Laws and regs, no matter how reasonable, get neutered before they’re even passed.
Doesn’t matter where or when it would have started. Obama would have gotten the brunt of it and the same shit that’s being said now would have been said then. Even Sandy Hook couldn’t stop the NRA from their usual tactics.

Weird..
The original story from the Raleigh gun show..
An eyewitness told ABC11 that a person brought a loaded semi-automatic pistol to a security check-in area around 1 p.m. Saturday. The gun owner reportedly removed the gun’s slide out magazine, but there was still a round in the gun’s chamber. When a law enforcement officer went to secure the weapon with a zip tie through the trigger area and around the grip, the gun went off as the zip tie was pulled tight.
And the current story from the same news source. No retraction for the original story, that just vanished down the memory hole.
Agency spokesman Brian Long says a 12-gauge shotgun discharged while its owner, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson, of Wilmington, unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check it at a security entrance.
Three people were injured when the gun went off, officials said, including a retired Wake County Sherriff’s deputy working the show.

There is far more to this than the NRA and west wing drama. How effective are the NRA guys in CA and NY state legislatures? LA City Council? Ever read the Sullivan act? (NY)
We got the NRA and GOA on one side and “poison pill” regulation advocates on the other. Or those that want the 2nd just gone.
I’m trying to get past that noise. Keep embracing it and yes the job of doing what we need to is harder. When outrage is the word of the day then progress has likely been delayed.

I’ll be fascinated when one of these nuts gets around to writing a history book (hopefully spell and grammar checked) claiming that Obama had a secret program to kill thousands of random people in order to stir up a backlash against the 2nd amendment.
The paranoia will seem familiar, I read plenty of socialists polemicists in my day. Heh, I helped a friend of mine replace a washing machine for Michael Parenti.
When I was a teen I listened to him give a speech on the radio and got excited, thinking that he could back his conspiracy theories up. So I went to a KPFA faire, picked up his book and…
It was a stupid thin pamphlet that said the same as his speech
And it proved nothing at all. It had no evidence, no citations, no nothing.
I got it immediately, he was full of shit. Still he did buy a used washer from my friend >.>

More than 10 suspected al Qaeda operatives were killed by an explosion in a house in south Yemen where they were making bombs, and at least six others died in two strikes from U.S. drones, tribal and official sources said on Sunday.
A bomb ripped through a house in the province of al-Bayda on Saturday night, the state news agency Saba and a local official said.
Strikes by suspected U.S. drone aircraft killed three people on Saturday and another three on Sunday in two parts of central Maarib province, tribal and government sources said.

We got the NRA and GOA on one side and “poison pill” regulation advocates on the other. Or those that want the 2nd just gone.
.
Those aren’t in the least bit equivalent. At all. The 2nd amendment is absolutely clearly archaic. It begins with a section about militias that everyone agrees is completely irrelevant to modern society; it also begins by stating the reason for the amendment is the need for those militias.
The reliance of gun advocates on the 2nd amendment is really, really aggravating to people like me. We have plenty of dangerous things in our society and we manage to regulate them and deal with them based on the general principles of law, property ownership, society, and the government not being allowed to disallow things without cause. The only major place we fuck up on this is the drug war, where we don’t allow people to own things that aren’t harmful to others, but that’s a whole ‘nother kettle of fish.
The inability of gun advocates to make an argument without relying on the 2nd amendment shows the weakness of many of their arguments. If you can’t argue against a regulation without resorting to the 2nd amendment, then your argument is weak as hell.

It is kind of interesting to see some shootings getting more attention than others.
Not making international news: 2 Dead, 15 Wounded In Shootings Since Friday
The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 9:15 p.m. Friday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. A 21-year-old man was shot several times through a glass window while he was inside a Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits restaurant in the 5500 block of West North Avenue, police said.
Marshall D. Fields-Hall, of the 1500 block of North Luna Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County within the hour, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
About 15 minutes after that attack, a separate fatal shooting claimed the life of a 19-year-old man in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood.
Jovantay Alexander, of the 1800 block of East 72nd Street, was found dead near 54th and Laflin streets, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He had been shot in the face.
No one has been arrested in connection with either slaying as of early Sunday, police said.
Weekend shootings throughout Chicago left 12 other people wounded.
The most recent attack happened about 4:55 a.m. in the 300 block of East 75th Street, in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side. A female driving a silver, older-model Lexus pulled up alongside a 28-year-old man, and her male passenger started shooting before they fled. The man was shot in the hand and is in good condition at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Centers.
I can think of a bunch of reasons; Chicago gun crime is commonplace, most of the victims and perpetrators are probably poor and black, etc. Also the Chicago shootings (and those like them) lack the easy solution of banning a certain type of weapon or closing the gun show loophole.

That kind of dishonest crap is precisely why you’ve lost a lot of respect here.

I made no claim of equivalence, I made a claim of existence. The claim that it is weak to name the 2nd as apart of the law is specious. I don’t see that said of any other part of the bill of rights.
If a person cites the 2nd to justify removing all regulation, sure that’s weak. When the 2nd was used to remove an illegal gun ban from DC it was most decidedly not a weak argument.
The 2nd is far from the only good argument for private gun ownership. It just happens to be the single exemplar constitutional reference to them in a very fundamental part of our law.

It’s not in the least bit specious. There’s no right to many dangerous and hazardous things in the bill of rights— like private planes, cars, dynamite, poisons, radioactive material, etc. etc.— but we have laws allowing people to own them and use them responsibly. If you can’t make an argument for gun ownership in the same way as those other things, if you need to rely on the 2nd, then clearly the argument is not as strong.
The 2nd is far from the only good argument for private gun ownership. It just happens to be the single exemplar constitutional reference to them in a very fundamental part of our law.
It also very clearly contains archaic language and a reference to the need for militias which is absolutely untrue. Isn’t it weird to have a part of our constitution asserting something that’s obviously false, that militias are necessary for the protection of a free state?

The right to bear arms is absolute, don’tcha know. I want a tank and some flame throwers, maybe a grenade launcher. Just to clear a parking space at the store when it’s too crowded. Or for those high traffic days when it takes about 10 minutes just to exit the driveway. I think that’s reasonable. Maybe some napalm for the damned fire ant hills would come in handy too.

I suspect that some people feel my presence here is the reason anti-Muslim hate sites are frowned upon, and they resent it. The thing is, it’s simply NOT TRUE. Charles started backing away from the bigots long before I arrived on the scene.
That I’ve learned to vet my sources (thanks in no small part to LGF) and have been tracking the far-right & Islamophobes long enough to fairly quickly spot them and call them out seems to annoy the hell out of some. The only thing I can figure is that those people feel Muslims are collectively guilty for any & all bad actions by other Muslims and therefore have no “right” to push back against bigotry.
