Tennessee Republicans Trying to Legislate Away the Gay

Forcing teachers to out gay students
US News • Views: 33,272

Tennessee legislators are back at it. They’re looking to enact legislation that would ban the word “gay” from school classrooms. They’ve tried for the last few years, but have fallen short each time. It hasn’t stopped them from trying again though.

This time, they’re not only looking to ban the word, but they’re going to require teachers to out their gay students to their parents.

Among the provisions of SB 234:

At grade levels pre-K through eight (pre-K-8), any such classroom instruction, course materials or other informational resources that are inconsistent with natural human reproduction shall be classified as inappropriate for the intended student audience and, therefore, shall be prohibited.

The preceding passage would also seem to indicate that talk of contraceptives is inappropriate, since it’s inconsistent with natural human reproduction. Moreover, it would seem to prohibit discussion of in vitro fertilization (IVF).

The provision that requires counseling seems innocuous on its face, until you realize that if a school counselor or other administrator learns a student is gay during counseling, that person must inform the parents:

(2) A school counselor, nurse, principal or assistant principal from counseling a student who is engaging in, or who may be at risk of engaging in, behavior injurious to the physical or mental health and wellbeing of the student or another person; provided, that wherever possible such counseling shall be done in consultation with the student’s parents or legal guardians. Parents or legal guardians of students who receive such counseling shall be notified as soon as practicable that such counseling has occurred;

Parents wouldn’t need to be informed if the school official believes that the parent or guardian is in any way responsible for the sexual abuse of the student.

Campfield has tried this act before, and was even featured in 2008 in a fauxtography scandal when locals altered a photo to show him holding a bumper sticker saying confederate values.

Campfield’s positions have been highlighted here in the past as well. He’s previously been noted as being a birther.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Campfield’s focus on gayness is in part due to misguided notions about AIDS as well.

That Campfield construes gayness to be a dangerous act may be rooted in his faulty understanding of HIV and AIDS. ‘My understanding is that it is virtually—not completely, but virtually—impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex,’ he said during a radio interview last year. ‘Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community—it was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men. It was an airline pilot, I believe.’

(Renowned scientist Jacques Pepin’s book The Origin of AIDS differs greatly from Campfield’s account.)

True to the wording of his bills, Campfield does find homosexuality unnatural. Homosexuals ‘do not naturally reproduce,’ he says. ‘It has not been proven that it is nature. It happens in nature, but so does bestiality. That does not make it right or something we should teach in schools.’ And he does find homosexuality dangerous: ‘What’s the average lifespan of a homosexual? It’s very short. Google it.’

Also, too: I had no idea that a third or half of the black population of South Africa was gay.

I doubt Tennessee legislators pay any attention to the SPLC, but…

10 Anti-Gay Myths Debunked

“…legions of anti-gay activists who followed [Anita Bryant] have added a panoply of other [myths], ranging from the extremely doubtful claim that sexual orientation is a choice, to unalloyed lies like the claims that gay men molest children far more than heterosexuals or that hate crime laws will lead to the legalization of bestiality and necrophilia. These fairy tales are important to the anti-gay right because they form the basis of its claim that homosexuality is a social evil that must be suppressed — an opinion rejected by virtually all relevant medical and scientific authorities. They also almost certainly contribute to hate crime violence directed at the LGBT community, which is more targeted for such attacks than any other minority group in America. What follows are 10 key myths propagated by the anti-gay movement, along with the truth behind the propaganda.

“google it?”

ok, I did. First hit is from the International Journal of Epidemiology: Gay life expectancy revisited. Quoting in full footnotes:

Over the past few months we have learnt of a number of reports regarding a paper we published in the International Journal of Epidemiology on the gay and bisexual life expectancy in Vancouver in the late 1980s and early 1990s.1 From these reports it appears that our research is being used by select groups in US2 and Finland3 to suggest that gay and bisexual men live an unhealthy lifestyle that is destructive to themselves and to others. These homophobic groups appear more interested in restricting the human rights of gay and bisexuals rather than promoting their health and well being.

The aim of our research was never to spread more homophobia, but to demonstrate to an international audience how the life expectancy of gay and bisexual men can be estimated from limited vital statistics data. In our paper, we demonstrated that in a major Canadian centre, life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 21 years less than for all men. If the same pattern of mortality continued, we estimated that nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years would not reach their 65th birthday. Under even the most liberal assumptions, gay and bisexual men in this urban centre were experiencing a life expectancy similar to that experienced by men in Canada in the year 1871. In contrast, if we were to repeat this analysis today the life expectancy of gay and bisexual men would be greatly improved. Deaths from HIV infection have declined dramatically in this population since 1996. As we have previously reported there has been a threefold decrease in mortality in Vancouver as well as in other parts of British Columbia.4

It is essential to note that the life expectancy of any population is a descriptive and not a prescriptive mesaure.5 Death is a product of the way a person lives and what physical and environmental hazards he or she faces everyday. It cannot be attributed solely to their sexual orientation or any other ethnic or social factor. If estimates of an individual gay and bisexual man’s risk of death is truly needed for legal or other purposes, then people making these estimates should use the same actuarial tables that are used for all other males in that population. Gay and bisexual men are included in the construction of official population-based tables and therefore these tables for all males are the appropriate ones to be used.

In summary, the aim of our work was to assist health planners with the means of estimating the impact of HIV infection on groups, like gay and bisexual men, not necessarily captured by vital statistics data and not to hinder the rights of these groups worldwide. Overall, we do not condone the use of our research in a manner that restricts the political or human rights of gay and bisexual men or any other group.

Norway mass shooter files complaint over ‘aggravated torture’

In his complaint to Justice Minister Grete Faremo and the governor of the Ila high security prison, Knut Bjarkeid, Breivik complained over being kept in isolation for too long.

For safety reasons, the 33-year-old has been kept away from other prisoners in a cell that has its own exercise yard, where he’s entitled to spend one hour each day.

Breivik also lamented the lack of activities on offer, countless body searches and an “almost total” ban on expressing himself — all of which, according to his lawyer, violate Norway’s law that prohibits acts of “aggravated torture.”

“No matter what crime you have committed, you shouldn’t be subjected to degrading treatment that there is no justification for,” Breivik’s lawyer Tord Jordet said.

“There are rules governing imprisonment and they should apply to all,” he added.

In November, the killer sent a 27-page letter to prison authorities with a list of complaints ranging from everyday annoyances, like cold coffee and a lack of butter, to more serious issues, such as censorship of his correspondence, body searches and being kept in isolation.

I say spice up his day by tossing in a flashbang at random and shooting him with frozen paintballs.

Reading the book 1877: America’s Year of Living Violently. It starts off with the election strife of that year (following the contested 1876 presidential election), the withdrawal of federal troops from the South and the end of Reconstruction, and the resulting violence against Blacks (and White Republicans) as former Confederates “restored” the region to White supremacy. Not a book for our Super Patriots complaining about BHM.

Thanks again for the promo!

Couple of thoughts:

If you’re promoting articles, how about a feature that shows other recent pages by the promoted authors. That feature currently works for pages that aren’t promoted, though I guess that might clutter things up a bit.

For twitter purposes, is there any way to force the caption included in the tweet to come from the subtitle rather than the body? Or, is that beyond your control and subject to Twitter whims.

And one final observation - any way to show the total hits/comments/twitters for promoted pages on the pages dashboard?

Suicide Bomber Kills Guard at US Embassy in Turkey

In the second deadly assault on a U.S. diplomatic post in five months, a suicide bomber struck the American Embassy in Ankara on Friday, killing a Turkish security guard in what the White House described as a terrorist attack.

Washington immediately warned Americans to stay away from all U.S. diplomatic facilities in Turkey and to be wary in large crowds.

Turkish officials said the bombing was linked to leftist domestic militants.

The attack drew condemnation from Turkey, the U.S., Britain and other nations and officials from both Turkey and the U.S. pledged to work together to fight terrorism.

About fucking time:

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner Dumps Red Light Camera Program

“It seems to me that such a program can only be justified if there are demonstrable facts that prove a raise of safety awareness and decrease accidents in our city,” Mayor Bob Filner said at a news conference. “The data, in fact, does not really prove that.”

The program and its nearly $500 fine “breeds cynicism and disrespect for the law because people think they’re being ripped off,” the mayor said.

Filner said the majority of the fine revenue, 70 percent, goes to the state of California, and the city of San Diego has to share the remainder with the vendor.

The city reaped $1.8 million in revenue in the last fiscal year, but the red light program cost nearly as much, he said. Four full-time police officers were needed to review the photographs to make sure the driver’s face and vehicle’s license plate were clearly visible, and they should be out patrolling the streets instead, he said.

It would be nice if the tweets came from the LGF server. Sometimes every Tweet on the page is missing its text.

The worst part of 2nd term presidencies is watching the Cabinet and staff race for the door to cash in with private industry, speech engagements, and tell-all books, while almost inevitably being replaced by less talented people (not always I suppose - Robert Gates was a step up). And now we get to go through another round of idiotic confirmation hearings.

It was a terrific book. I am not a zombie fan at all, what I liked about the book is how it described the way that humans react to any crisis: fist we ignore it, then we deny it, and then we try to cover it up, all of which makes it progressively worse until it reaches a catastrophic tipping point.

Part of the issue in the book was the zombie were a slow, relentless threat that slowly built up into something nearly unstoppable.

My favorite part was when the US Army finds out that its shock and awe tactics - disrupting enemy communications and chain of command - do not work against a mindless, undead enemy. They have to resort to Civil War tactics of standing in a firing line and pouring lead into the heads of the approaching hordes.

A few more thoughts on categories, since we’re kinda brainstorming here:

• Britain & Scandinavia seem redundant when we already have Europe, and I don’t recall ever having seen them used. South America & Australia might be good replacements

• Atheism (or maybe Skepticism would be better)

• LGBT

• Advice (or Tutorials or Pro Tips). I realize this could go under Opinion, but some things—like best practices for Pages, how to use Twitter, etc.—aren’t really opinions so much as the are tutorials or pro tips, and the General category is too broad for them (IMO).

Oh, and now that the subject has come up, categories for Christianity & Judaism. Either that or take out the Islam category and just leave Religion. It has always mildly annoyed me that Islam is the only religion that gets singled out, especially when it gets used for Pages that should be categorized as Terrorism. It doesn’t happen as often as it used to, but still.

That’s a great point, and it has been done. All entries previously categorized Islam are now under Religion, and there’s no more unique category for Islam.

I’m creating some action lists for more development, and if you have any feedback please feed it to me!

Could you explain to me what the Imbed video (Ctrl-E) button actually does? Since video links are automatically converted, it appears to be a redundant feature.

Second, I’ve noticed if I launch the “Create a Page” function while inside of a thread, it automatically populates the Title with the existing thread title and inserts a link to that thread within the page. Is this by design? I’m asking because I don’t see any particular usefulness of this function.

There are two ways of looking at film, first that of a voice of personal or cultural expression, promoting an exchange of ideas throughout the world.

Then there is film as a way of getting butts on seats in a theater and making money.

It is rare when the two meet and produce something monumental.

Beck: The ‘Smear Machine’ has Destroyed My Reputation

Once upon a time, just a mere four years ago, Glenn Beck was listed as the fourth most admired man in America, just behind Nelson Mandela and just ahead of Pope Benedict.

But those days are long gone and now he is “one of the most despised men in the world,” simply because he insists on standing for the truth. And the change is a sign of just how much the country has lost its way that now he is seen as little more than a crazy conspiracy theorist/borderline doomsday cult leader … and it is all because “the smear machine” has destroyed his once sterling reputation:

He argues that Obama and other leaders are bringing about God’s judgment and that God allowed the September 11th attacks and the 2008 economic crash to occur as a warning to the country.

God’s Message: Stop listening to fucking crackpots like this asshole and pay attention to the world around you instead of 2000 year old folklore.

re: #244 RadicalModerate

Could you explain to me what the Imbed video (Ctrl-E) button actually does? Since video links are automatically converted, it appears to be a redundant feature.

Second, I’ve noticed if I launch the “Create a Page” function while inside of a thread, it automatically populates the Title with the existing thread title and inserts a link to that thread within the page. Is this by design? I’m asking because I don’t see any particular usefulness of this function.

Video links from some sites are automatically converted (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo), but if you want to embed a video from somewhere else, you can get the embed code from that video and use the button to properly embed it in an LGF Page.

As for the Create a Page question, that’s how the bookmarklet is designed to function. It could be that you want to link to a previous LGF page or article - that’s why it does that.

The last paragraph was separate to everything else. I want to promote the point that China is historically a second rate power, that has fallen apart more than Europe, and has been conquered more than Poland.

I am starting to believe that China, far from being an up-and-coming threat to US political dominance, has already peaked. Their “reforms” have created a mass of social, environmental, economic and social problems and they are going to have to spend the next 20-30 years sorting them out before they can think about moving up upward and onward.

Looks like the Dow is about to retake 14k at the close of the session. It’s been flirting with the number for most of the day. First time since 2007 since it sniffed these levels. What do the money men of Wall Street know that the GOP and the right wingers don’t? Oh yeah, their businesses are doing pretty well and profits are coming in - they’re just not sharing with the workforce.

The hubby’s employer had a conference with all the regional offices, business is great, but don’t ask about pay increases until March.

God, imagine if the Chinese discover this. If it works in DMs, the PLA will have a completely uninterceptable, untraceable and unstoppable communication system and we’ll have no means of stopping it.

Clicking Online Ads More Likely To Deliver Malware Than Surfing Porn Sites, Report Finds

Your online habits may be less dangerous than you think if they involve the less savory aspects of the web: According to Cisco’s annual 2013 Security Report internet users are 182 times more likely to get malware from clicking on online ads than visiting a porn site. It turns out, the site on the gray or black market edges of the web most of us traditionally think of as dangerous aren’t the biggest threats to your online security, instead:

“The dangers […] are often hidden in plain sight through exploit-laden online ads that are distributed to legitimate websites, or hackers targeting the user community on the common sites they use most.”

You know, if the right in this country were truly a conservative/libertarian movement in a Locke/Burke sense, they’d probably make Jay-Z out to be an icon. After all, he made his way from the crime and poverty of the NYC projects (a failed liberal social policy if there ever was one) to become a millionaire entrepreneur. Nobody gave him a helping hand. He was bootstraps personified.

But not, because the right in the US is all about white evangelical tribal identity, Jay-Z becomes a “thug”, while a genuine lazy grifter like Sarah Palin becomes an icon.

No, it’s a 1960 Schwinn cruiser, so the only cable was for the cool speedometer, which disassembled by hand. But the bolt holding the brake arm strap on was rusted and bent, so I cut the brake arm strap.

You can even get fancy and redefine the bullet type for the list, by using the style attribute to set the list-style-type:

<li>Another list item.</li>

It’s a (formerly) beautiful green Jaguar, but the former owner butchered it when he was a kid to put a motor on it. The rack is cut up and welded back on off center and a ring is bolted on the rear spokes so he could run a belt to the motor. Miscellaneous holes were drilled in the tank where the horn was. Really a sad sight. This buyer saved me hours of labor I would have spent to clean it up, to get maybe $200 for it.
