It’s quite possible that this is true - I don’t dispute this - but as an argument against Obamacare it fails.

And since he wasn’t even filibustering, I’m free to analyze his arguments on that level.

The National Fruit of China.

In Chinese, the current word for most wild or local varieties of the kiwifruit is the Macaque peach. The imported varieties are often referred to as wonder fruit (qí yì guǒ) as qí yì (wonder) sounds similar to kiwi. See the table below for other Chinese words for kiwifruit.

Sunny peach 陽桃 yáng táo
Macaque peach 獼猴桃 mí hóu táo
Wonder Fruit 奇異果 qí yì guǒ
Macaque pear 獼猴梨 mí hóu lí
Vine pear 藤梨 téng lí
Wood berry 木子 mù zi
Hairy bush fruit 毛木果 máo mù guǒ

I’d say neither. I’m getting the impression (particularly after reading this TPM article) is that he’s a really smart guy who thinks he and his ideology are never ever wrong.

Which is why he and the current incarnation of his party need to driven from the reigns of power as much as possible. Case in point: we’re looking at a real possibility of another Republican-created government shutdown, and these asswipes are okay with that.

It’s Monday Night..Are you bored? How about a little light reading?
I provide updates of my life here from time to time.. After these many days at LGF and the thousands of stories we have shared..It is a joy when I get to bang out a few thoughts here..
So many of you knew I was close to an early retirement and buying a place in Paradise to move to..Just Winston and I and well whomever would enjoy the visit in paradise. *wink*
The last 5 years of my life has been a mix of about everything..Great Love..Great loss..A divorce..Jordan going to Iraq..Nikki graduating from UC Davis..What a life it has been and I’ve always been open with you lizards telling classic stories of Love and hate and change in my life…You know..Just sharing with you guys has helped me in so many blessed ways..We’ve all shared love and hate, evil and jaw dropping stupid stupid, bigot, heroes and more folks we admire and follow. ‘ve been following my targets and has invested thousands in my new place..This really is my Green Acres moment in time…
About 6 months ago my ex and I started talking as usual about our families and kids and stuff..And it started slowly getting deeper and forgiveness on both of us..We have talked about an hour or more a week..Like on a Sunday Afternoon..Sometimes we have talked for effening hours..We laugh and share..And it’s nice..really nice to be close again even if I still hate her fucking guts somewhere in my heart behind a door..And look..Things were said that hurt..And will never go away..Maybe just maybe we are both just over it and can just..like I said..Just get over it..I remember why I fell madly in love with her and we raised our kids together.. I guess a rare loving family that got just blown up in all our faces..So now…I continue to plan to talk to her on a regular basis..I don’t know what is going to happen..We are going in completely different directions…She bought a great house in the hills of Napa Valley far from everybody in her paradise..Our kids live in and around Napa.
I am moving to my paradise.. We both have stopped in time. All things have stopped moving for us..The world is whirling by like a raging hurracanne and time stopped and it’s calm..

I know a couple fervent AGW deniers who should know better, based on their obvious intelligence and their training. The problem is, they’re ideologically driven to believe it’s not true, so they are walking examples of confirmation bias.

Add the arrogance of always being the smartest kid in the room, and you get a recipe for really dumb smart people.

Another point - Science is about the questions, and constantly questioning what you know. It’s about the DATA, and the data always trump any argument no matter how compelling, even if it takes a while for everyone to realize it.

Law is about making the most compelling argument, no matter what the truth is.

This isn’t good for big business because a lot of those people dream of going into business for themselves, but couldn’t qualify for insurance on the individual market before because they have a pre-existing condition like high blood pressure. It would also obviously undermine their rhetoric if the law led to a boom in small business and innovation.

I think you’re being too generous. My take is that there are essentially two kinds of Republicans: rich, cunning ones and poor, not cunning ones.

The rich cunning ones don’t like Obamacare because it means (to some extent) rich people subsidizing poor people’s health care.

The poor, not cunning ones don’t like Obamacare because the rich cunning ones tell them not to.

ACA doesn’t cost rich people much if anything. It is almost certainly though going to cause a brain drain away from big business and into self employment unless big business adapts and raises salaries and benefits to match worker productivity.

If you’re a rich self employed individual or early retired person then the ACA works just as well for you. A platinum plan can lock in your worst case scenario for all non-elective health care at around $7 to 10K depending on age. If you get the Platinum family plan your out of pocket expenditures are capped at $8K per year, for the entire family. The same family attempting to self insure with a bond can easily tie up twenty to forty times that much money with absolutely no floor to the downside risk.

I had reached the conclusion by this point that most of these cuts supposedly induced by the ACA have more to do with companies seeing an opportunity to “cut costs” while blaming something that they view as unpopular. “I didn’t cut your job/hours/benefits, Obama did!”

Along the lines of ACA freeing up job locked employees, you California lizards should should know that non-compete agreements/contracts are in almost every circumstance totally unenforceable in California. It’s been that way ever since California became a state, it’s in the state constitution.

If any of you have had to sign a non-compete clause as a condition of your employment then realize that it was a total bluff on the part of your employer, an utterly pointless, impotent scare tactic. The only time such clauses carry any weight is for business owners selling their ownership stake in a business and where the sale also includes the business’s “goodwill.”

Okay, I don’t like that anymore. At first it was funny but these people are going too far. I ended your letter last night because it was time to wake the MI prisoners and “mess with them” but it went too far even I can’t handle whats going on. I cant get it out of my head. I walk down stairs after blowing the whistle and beating on the cells with an asp to find “the taxicab driver” handcuffed backwards to his window with some underwear over his head and face. He looked like Jesus Christ. At first I had to laugh so I went on and grabbed the camera and took a picture. Again I thought, okay that’s funny then it hit me, that’s a form of molestation. You can’t do that. I took more pictures now to “record” what is going on. They started talking to this man and at first he was talking “I’m just a taxicab driver, I did nothing.” He claims he’d never try to hurt US soldiers that he picked up the wrong people. Then he stopped talking. They turned the lights out and slammed the door and left him there while they went down to cell #4. This man had been so fucked that when they grabbed his foot through the cell bars he began screaming and crying. After praying to Allah he moans a constant short Ah, Ah every few seconds for the rest of the night. I don’t know what they did to this guy. The first one remained handcuffed for maybe 1 1/2-2 hours until he started yelling for Allah. So they went back in and handcuffed him to the top bunk on either side of the bed while he stood on the side. He was there for a little over an hour when he started yelling again for Allah. Not many people know this shit goes on. The only reason I want to be there is to get the pictures and prove that the US is not what they think. But I don’t know if I can take it mentally. What if that was me in their shoes. These people will be our future terrorist. Kelly, its awful and you know how fucked I am in the head. Both sides of me think its wrong. I thought I could handle anything. I was wrong.

NUACT production of ‘Inherit the Wind’ canceled

The New Ulm Actors Community Theatre’s production of “Inherent the Wind”?was canceled last week due to cast dropouts stemming from objections by Martin Luther College professors and local WELS members over the play’s depiction of the evolution/creationism debate.

NUACT originally slated the play as its fall production with MLC student Zach Stowe as director. The play deals with a fictionalized version of the evolution/creationism debate in the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial.” The play is also a metaphor for criticizing the suppression of free expression under the McCarthyism of the 1950s.

The play was not slated to be performed at MLC, but a final audition was scheduled on campus on Friday, Aug. 30. NUACT previously used MLC for auditions, rehearsals and performances.

After seeing the poster for the audition, several MLC professors raised objections about the play’s subject to the administration.

[…]

MLC is the college of ministry for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), which believes in creationism that teaches the Genesis story as a factual, historical account. Schone said MLC was concerned about making it absolutely clear to its students, WELS members and the public about its beliefs and teachings on creationism. He said he recognizes the subtext of the play, but feels it is unfairly critical of creationism and that most people would only see the criticism.

[…]

Evolution is still too radical for large segments of America. Even if only a college’s facilities are used for practice and not performance, it’s still too radical.

Speaking of college students and religion:

College students divided on God, spirituality

College students are almost evenly divided into three camps when it comes to faith, according to a new study released Thursday.

About a third, 32%, are true believers. Another 32% are spiritual but not religious. And 28% consider themselves secular.

Researchers from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., asked students nationwide a series of questions about their spiritual, political and moral values, ranging from belief in God and worship attendance to climate change and same-sex marriage.

About 70% of the religious students were Christian, as were about 43% of the spiritual students.

That widely circulated USA Today story doesn’t link back to the original report, but I found it:

Some of the survey seems to me to be forced categorization and it also relies on word association (i.e., students self-declaring, wanting to be identified with a certain label). Some of it seems a bit daft to me. The researchers for instance still want to put science not with the humanities, a not uncommon failing.

Anyway, I do take away from the survey that the wingnut religious right is losing the college the crowd. The majority who still identified as “religious” supports gay marriage and the right of gays to adopt children, for example.

in the online dating world, ‘atheist’ is a choice but in my experience some people react badly to it. the overwhelmingly popular option is ‘spiritual but not religious’

it seems to me to mean ‘yeah well i’m not especially like a christian particularly certainly not a fundie and maybe i don’t even believe in god or maybe i do, but i’m still a nice person who has idealistic thoughts and wants to treat people well and atheist sounds to me like some cynical crank who hates people’

Jon Stewart tracks differences between Pope Francis and ‘incredibly fallible’ religious Republicans

Stewart highlighted the contrast between the Pope’s criticism toward the Catholic Church’s preoccupation with topics like abortion and same-sex marriage and the GOP’s repeated harping on those issues based on their interpretation of church doctrine.

Stewart also singled out Rep. Steve Southerland (R-FL) for invoking the Book of Genesis while voting for a House bill cutting the “food stamp” program by billions.

“Work is not a penalty,” Southerland argued at the time. “Work is a blessing.”

“You know, that’s so true,” Stewart said in response. “It reminds me of the Sermon on the Mountain: ‘Consider the lilies — they toil not, so f*ck them, lazy lillies, with their stamens and their pistils.’”

But just as Stewart was pointing out that internal disagreements aren’t always a bad thing, a clip of Pope Francis’ improvised remarks rebuking the worship “of this god called money” set him straight.

“Oh no, now sh*t is on,” Stewart warned. “You better watch it, or we’re gonna end up invading the Vatican.”

What the Guardian reports:

Wyden and his fellow Democrat Mark Udall used the public hearing to press the intelligence chiefs on aspects of the top-secret surveillance infrastructure.

Asked by Udall whether it was the NSA’s aim to collect the records of all Americans, Alexander replied: “I believe it is in the nation’s best interest to put all the phone records into a lockbox - yes.”

What was actually said (@ ~1h:27m):
c-span.org

Sen. Udall:
“Is it the goal of the NSA to collect the phone records of all Americans? You talk about building a haystack, you want the haystack to be the ultimate size.”

Gen. Alexander:
“I believe it is in the nation’s best interest to put all the phone records into a lock-box, that we can search when the nation needs to do it, yes. And the reason — and the way we do it — and the way we comply would ensure better security for this nation. So the oversight and compliance regime we have is going to be key to that. And does this give us the authority to collect other records? Well, as I noted, footnote number five, the court has said, hold off if you want to do cell site data, or plan to do that, you have to come back to the court.”

What was dropped:

Officials from NCIS (United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service) and the U.S. Office of the Provost (both with field offices inside the Washington DC Navy Yard) had threatened to arrest Obama for planning to attack Syria without Congressional approval following a planned nuclear detonation false flag in Washington DC. NBC Sports Network under fire for elephant killing on NRA show

NBC Sports Network is facing a flurry of criticism over an episode of the outdoor sports program “Under Wild Skies” in which a National Rifle Assn. strategist shoots and kills an African elephant.

In the episode, which aired Sunday night (a highlight reel is posted above), host Tony Makris and a guide stalk an elephant in the Okavango Delta of Botswana — “a mecca for elephant hunting,” according to a narrator.

The episode has sparked an online petition calling for NBC Sports to cancel the NRA-sponsored “Under Wild Skies.” The series is not produced by the network but is what’s known as a “time buy,” in which outside producers pay to air content — not unlike an infomercial.

As detailed by the Washington Post earlier this year, Makris is a public relations strategist who has helped manage the NRA’s image for the last 30 years. In the 1990s, he helped install Charlton Heston as president of the lobbying group. More recently, his firm, Mercury Group, a subsidiary of the advertising and public relations agency Ackerman McQueen, was behind a highly controversial NRA ad accusing President Obama of hypocrisy for his skepticism over the group’s proposal to put armed guards in schools across the country. It was produced shortly after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

BuzzFeed describes the episode:
buzzfeed.com

In the episode, which aired Sunday night, NRA strategist Tony Makris and a hunting guide track an elephant in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Makris spots an elephant and shoots it in the face twice, causing the injured elephant to trumpet and run away. “Somebody got a little cheeky there,” Makris chuckles as the animal attempts to escape. He and his guide eventually catch up to the elephant and Makris delivers the fatal blow. After posing next to the elephant’s body with his his “lethal” Tyrannosaur rifle and .577 ammunition, Makris and his guide return to their lodge to celebrate with champagne.

Since Wendy Davis is in all likelihood running for gov in TX, the reaction from commenters over at Politico are just what you’d expect. She’s the “abortion” candidate. All those mythical babies out there are doomed!

politico.com

I still think the old saying we had back in the day holds: “If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.”

Alternatively, if you don’t want to be a father and the responsibility that entails, don’t have sex if you can’t have it responsibly, too. Sex can be fun and games, but that’s not all it is ultimately, because we’re human animals, designed to reproduce our own kind. That’s the real physical side of our species, but we are also sentient, and not expected to have it as the only reason for our existence. Choosing not to have children can be just as much work and as taxing on ourselves as having them, esp when the other partner abrogates their responsibility.

Why not just have freely available contraception for everybody who wants it? And protect yourself—no glove, no love. Not just protection from pregnancy, but from STDs which can be rampant with multiple partners. And you are, in essence, fucking everyone your partner does. Just one little slip-up, a few minutes of passion, can change your life forever.

All the responsibility and burden of pregnancy, or not getting pregnant, seems to be on the woman, but face it, it takes two to tango, and a woman doesn’t get pregnant by herself.

NBC deserves to get flak for this “show.” African elephants are listed as a “vulnerable” species by conservationists, and killing any for mere sport is in my book a sin. Even worse, this Great White Hunter failed to kill or at least immobilize the beast with his first shot, causing great pain to the animal.

Botswana, meanwhile, should end big game hunting. There may be local overpopulation of elephants (I am not sure if there is), but letting non-experts hunt like this yokel is a crime. Capture and release, though much harder, would be better for the elephant population.

Very interesting…and a revelation about Hugh Hefner who also could not have a “normal” relationship with women, something many of us figured out a long time ago.

Brain scans of porn addicts: what’s wrong with this picture?

Scan images show that watching online ‘adult’ sites can alter our grey matter, which may lead to a change in sexual tastes

theguardian.com

“The Cambridge University neuropsychiatrist Dr Valerie Voon has recently shown that men who describe themselves as addicted to porn (and who lost relationships because of it) develop changes in the same brain area - the reward centre - that changes in drug addicts. The study, not yet published, is featured next week in the Channel 4 TV show Porn and the Teenage Brain. Neurosceptics may argue that pictures of the brain lighting up in addicts tell us nothing new - we already know they are addicted. But they do help: knowing the reward centre is changed explains some porn paradoxes.

(snip)

“Until recently, scientists believed our brains were fixed, their circuits formed and finalised in childhood, or “hardwired”. Now we know the brain is “neuroplastic”, and not only can it change, but that it works by changing its structure in response to repeated mental experience.

(snip)

“In her book, Bunny Tales: Behind Closed Doors at the Playboy Mansion, Izabella St James, who was one of Hugh Hefner’s former “official girlfriends”, described sex with Hef. Hef, in his late 70s, would have sex twice a week, sometimes with four or more of his girlfriends at once, St James among them. He had novelty, variety, multiplicity and women willing to do what he pleased. At the end of the happy orgy, wrote St James, came “the grand finale: he masturbated while watching porn”.

And speaking of carbon:

Norway abandons full-scale CCS project

The Norwegian government is abandoning its project to build a full-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at an oil refinery and gas-fired power plant in Mongstad.

Norway still aims to have a full-scale CCS facility in operation somewhere in the country by 2020, but ‘the risk connected to the Mongstad facility is too high,’ according to a statement from Ola Borten Moe, the minister for petroleum and energy.

The government is committing NOK400 million (£41 million) over four years to the CCS technology development centre in Mongstad. However, the move essentially takes the most advanced CCS programme in Europe back to the drawing board in terms of looking for new projects to back.

Political instability in support for CCS, coupled with badly-administered funding programmes, have dogged projects across Europe, leaving actual progress well behind the targets set for reducing emissions.

Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf ‘sextortion’ case: college student arrested for hijacking webcams

A college student was arrested Thursday for allegedly hijacking the webcams of young women — among them reigning Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf — taking nude images, then blackmailing his victims to send him more explicit material or else be exposed.

Jared James Abrahams, a 19-year-old computer science student from Temecula, California, surrendered on Thursday to the FBI on federal extortion charges, the agency announced. Authorities say he victimized young women surreptitiously, by taking control of their computers then photographing them as they changed out of their clothes.

Samuel L Jackson Tells Obama To Be ‘F***Ing Presidential’

HOLLYWOOD ACTOR Samuel L Jackson has criticised Barack Obama for “dumbing down” the way he speaks and has urged him to “be f***ing presidential”.

Jackson questioned the US president for changing his speech and dropping the “g’s at the end of his words”.

The Django Unchained star said: “First of all, we know it ain’t because of his blackness, so I say stop trying to relate.

“Be a leader. Be f***ing presidential. Look, I grew up in a society where I could say, ‘It ain’t’ or ‘What it be’ to my friends.

“But when I’m out presenting myself to the world as me, who graduated from college, who had family who cared about me, who has a well-read background, I f***ing conjugate.”

Obama, who studied at Harvard, has been criticised in the past for being elitist and for not understanding the average American.

Despite his harsh words, which were made in an interview with Playboy magazine, the Pulp Fiction actor is an Obama supporter having backed the president in the 2008 and 2012 elections.

Jackson, 64, also said the president was trying too hard to “relate” to normal people instead of being true to who he really is and said that educated men like the president who actively try to speak less correctly encourage mediocrity.

[…]

What Jackson doesn’t appreciate is the President has a grammar-limiter installed that stops at 10th grade level language - and 10th grade grammar these days ain’t what it used to be.

Anti-evolution group sues to block Kansas school science standards

An anti-evolution group filed a federal lawsuit Thursday to block Kansas from using new, multistate science standards in its public schools, arguing the guidelines promote atheism and violate students’ and parents’ religious freedom.

The group, Citizens for Objective Public Education, had criticized the standards developed by Kansas, 25 other states and the National Research Council for treating both evolution and climate change as key scientific concepts to be taught from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Kansas State Board of Education adopted them in June to replace evolution-friendly standards that had been in place since 2007.

The conversation ended when I said, “Yes, and all the coal, oil, and gas, is plant-based carbon that got collected *and buried* millions of years ago - which took it out of the cycle. Then we dug it up, burned it, and put that extra CO2 into the system.”

I think what surprised me was that he appeared to actually be listening to what I said since he did not respond with some additional dodge.

The UN is now investigating additional reports of chemical weapons usage in Syria beyond the previously reported upon August 21 attacks by Assad’s forces that killed hundreds in a Damascus suburb. Several of these alleged attacks occurred after the August 21 attack.

The incidents also include an alleged chemical weapons attack in March in the northern town of Khan al-Assal, where authorities say rebels killed 25 people, including 16 soldiers. Rebels said government forces were behind it.

The two other cases from earlier this year both date back to April - one in the Aleppo district of Sheikh Maqsoud and another in the town of Saraqeb in the northern province of Idlib.

The three most recent incidents were in Bahhariyeh and Jobar, both east of central Damascus, on August 22 and 24, and Ashrafiat Sahnaya to the southwest of the capital on August 25, the U.N. statement said.

I have some space just barely in reach on top of my cabinets. That holds large platters, the slow cooker, and the rice cooker. Have to dust things off when I take them down, but it does allow me to store some additional items.

I also put one of those narrow racks usually put in bathrooms that fit above toilets at the end of the kitchen. Narrow enough I can get the pantry and oven doors open (which lie to either side). And the clearance of the first rack above the ground serves two purposes - can put cat food dishes at floor level; and hang cast iron skillets from the rack itself. The higher racks hold some oils, spices, cookbooks, and my array of teas.

Probably pretty well. I make rolled oat scones all the time and the common fruit-nut-spice combos for those are:
raisin-cinnamon
apple-walnut
cherry-hazelnut*
almond-lemon zest

Most of these should work with the slow cooker as well. You can probably also experiment with adding some additional grains for flavor, texture, etc. Perhaps flax or buckwheat. I might give some of those a shot since I have them on-hand and then report back.

*- Nuts are usually roasted a bit to bring up the oils before being used. For the hazelnuts this is roasting and then rubbing off the bitter outer seed coat (if using raw hazelnuts). The issue I have is that I have to roast twice as many as I need for the recipe since I start eating the whole roasted hazelnuts before they’re done cooling!

Greetings from America’s capital, where a small minority of teabag congresscritters insist on shooting the hostage sooner (October 1) rather than later (October 17):

Washington stumbled toward a shutdown as the Republican Party’s rebellious right wing on Thursday blocked a strategy by House Speaker John A. Boehner for navigating a series of deadlines to keep the government funded and avoid a first-ever default.

Boehner (R-Ohio) and his leadership team revealed the first step of that plan to rank-and-file lawmakers early Thursday, urging conservatives to shift their assault on President Obama’s health-care law to the coming fight over the federal debt limit.

That would allow lawmakers in the meantime to try to reach an agreement on a plan to fund federal agencies into the new fiscal year, which begins Tuesday, and avoid a shutdown.

But about two dozen hard-liners rejected that approach, saying they will not talk about the debt limit until the battle over government funding is resolved.

“Quite frankly, I think that’s primarily where we need to be putting our attention,” said Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.), who has led the drive in the House to use the threat of a shutdown to defund the health-insurance initiative, Obama’s signature legislative achievement.

Late Thursday afternoon, Boehner convened an emergency meeting of his leadership team to try to hash things out. They emerged with no answers, and no clear path forward for any piece of legislation, either to keep the lights on in Washington or to make sure the Treasury Department can continue to pay the nation’s bills by raising the borrowing limit.

“We’re getting a lot of feedback, so there hasn’t been a decision that’s been made yet,” said Rep. Peter Roskam (Ill.), a top vote counter for the House GOP. “Our members are . . . very reasonable, they’re thoughtful, and they want to move forward. But they want to move forward on something that’s significant.”

As Republicans struggled in the House, GOP hard-liners also were blocking progress in the Senate, where most members of both parties were ready to vote late Thursday on a plan to keep the government operating through Nov. 15.

But Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) objected. Although both men voted earlier this week to advance the measure, they argued Thursday that Republicans should now unite to kill it.

Nobody in his caucus cares what their own GOP House Speaker, let alone the American public, wants. Inmates running the asylum, etc

Right now I put my odds of showing up for work as a federal bureaucrat as scheduled this Tuesday at about 10%.

None of the GOP caucus cares who is the Speaker. They have their sights set on delay, defund, and destroy Obamacare by any means necessary.

If it means destroying the full faith and credit of the US government, so be it.

If it means defaulting on the debt, absolutely.

If it means shutting down the government, even better.

They couldn’t care about the consequences, only the absolute hatred of Obamacare is their guiding principle and one that dominates all other discussion.

The worst possible outcome for the GOP is that October 1 passes, the ACA begins registering people for the exchanges and the numbers show that millions now have insurance that they previously couldn’t afford.

Will there be hiccups? Absolutely. No program ever instituted by Congress is ever perfect. But the ACA is preferable to the alternatives, which the GOP essentially wants as the status quo ante - no ACA, no insurance to millions, and the health for millions at risk.

The subtext - the thing that’s happening this time that you haven’t really quite seen with the Doctor before is… we’ve seen him fall in love loads of times, we’ve seen him have secret crushes, we’ve had him… we’ve had all of that very much in the Doctor - I don’t think we’ve quite seen him just straight-forwardly fancy someone that he thinks he shouldn’t. Fun with polling. Amazing that Ruffini thinks that this polling favors GOP. It clearly shows the polling favors the Administration’s position on health care, jobs, employment, gay marriage, taxes Medicare, environment, womens’ rights, and immigration.

On a few issues, the GOP has a slight advantage (within Margin of Error) - 1 pt on foreign policy, and a slight advantage on Israel.

But for anyone to really think that the GOP is going to benefit from the shutdown is deluding themselves - skewing the polls.

ty for cherry picking the parts that suited you for feeling morally superior, hope you can bask in your self satisfaction long enough to read and take in the complete context next time. Let me know when you obtain the media network that allows you to spread your kumbaya to masses, perhaps you’ll take a page from the Monty Python “How to do it” sketch as far as the implementation goes.

I get that you don’t think resorting to the same tactics employed by those that disagree with us politically isn’t the answer, I don’t believe that it serves the purpose either but I do understand that folks want to push back and retaliate and that human nature in and of itself, doesn’t always reflect the better nature of our angels.

Or perhaps I’m also a tad to sensitive to really feel that snark tags are simply there to give you cover in your own way of feeling the need to snipe at someone, anyone to allow you to vent your own frustrations…..

or you could simply be a better human being than me in just about every way…. that wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to believe either…

/////

So you went straight for the personal attack and armchair psychoanalysis, I see. My half of this conversation is over, effective immediately.

KKK group gets permit for rally at Gettysburg battlefield

pennlive.com

“Preston said his group does not intend to harm or endanger anybody and that the klan is not about racism. “We just want people to come hear what we have to say,” he said. “It’s never been about racism. We’re not white supremacists, we’re white separatists. This is about America for Americans. The only thing we want is our country back.” (my emphasis)

You mean there’s a difference? In South Africa, it was called apartheid.

I think everything is going to hinge on their definition of “American”. And that definition is going to be full of major logical fail beyond “it is whomever we say it is - and then we’ll throw some of them out when they disagree or we discover they lied about their lineage.”

I have piles of noise across the street due to building construction. Usually consists of one or more of the following from about 8:30am - 6:00pm
- cement trucks (pouring floors)
- rivet/nail guns (attaching frames to concrete floors and I-beams
- mechanical devices (smoothing concrete and moving frames)

I don’t mind the big crane since it is actually pretty quiet.

But the main premise — a nuclear blast blows the Moon out of the solar system into interstellar space — was pretty weak. Even as a kid, I knew a blast of that magnitude would have vaporized the Moon.

Still, assuming it held together, would the Moon then qualify as a spacecraft?

Was watching C-span’s twitter feed and it was sad watching all those folks thinking that the GOP is righteous in engaging in overt extortion in trying to defund, delay, and destroy Obamacare as part of their CR, the debt ceiling talks, etc.

They think that the ones engaging in obstruction and who are threatening default are Democrats. It’s asinine. But that’s where the GOP is getting its support from.

Add to that the same folks thinking that Obamacare is communism (skipping socialism in the process) ignores the fact that Obamacare creates a health exchange where multiple insurance companies (private for profit companies listed on stock exchanges like Aetna, as well as nonprofits) offer multiple plans to people who get to choose the plans that meet their needs at rates that are affordable due to the purchasing power of having more people eligible. Government isn’t providing the insurance. Government isn’t setting the rates. Government created a new marketplace. But that’s communism in the eyes of the rabid right.

Yes, we are. The Teahadis would have no problem whatsoever destroying the United States in order to ‘save’ it.

That’s why I’m hoping that Boehner will wise up, suspend the Hastert Rule, and work with the Democrats to get things done; if he did that, he could largely neutralize the Tea Partiers. They’re only 80 or so in the House; granted, the GOP base would be on the verge of insurrection at that point, and perhaps that’s exactly what he’s afraid of, as well as the GOP leadership.

Seriously the GOP had its chance to stop ACA. They failed. They got the House out of the lies they spread about the issue. Move on. Instead of trying to destroy something that they knew President Obama and the Democrats will never defund, they should be trying to make it more efficient. That’s kind of what the Republicans in the 50’s did with the New Deal but then one remembers in the 50’s, the Republican Party wasn’t filled with people like Ted Cruz and Michelle Bachmann.

Meanwhile, we’re getting some more info about the terrorist setup before the attack in Kenya:

A small shop in Nairobi’s Westgate Mall was rented by al-Shabbab terrorists for a year before last week’s massacre that left at least 67 people dead, a Kenyan intelligence source tells CNN.

F0ckers.

He’s only laughing at stupid hysterical idiots like you who think we can threaten to shut down the government because we don’t like ACA. Didn’t see the Democrats threatening a government shutdown when Bush had the idiotic tax cuts passed.

Daubenmire Defends Westboro Baptist Church Because ‘What If God Really Told Fred Phelps To Do That?’

Even the most militant anti-gay activists tend to distance themselves from the Phelps cult and decry their protests as vile and unchristian … but not “Coach” Dave Daubenmire who today defended Westboro on the grounds that Christians have no right to judge the way in which this church carries out its mission.

Defending both Koran-burner Terry Jones and Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church, Daubenmire said that while he personally might not do things the same way, he is in no position to criticize them because “what if God really told Fred Phelps to do that?”

Then God is a bigger asshole than previous shown.

So if a dictator commits genocide and he claims he did it because “God told him to do it”, it’s okay? I’ll say it here loudly but religious fundamentalism is an illness.

He told me to take a dump in their pews. I mean that makes just as much sense as God telling Phelps to picket funerals.

re: #362 blueraven

Yup, and they’ll be right at this, pushing a 2-3 month kick the can because it’s all for show.

Everyone knows that this is getting the nation nowhere, but it’s going to generate $$$ for campaigns in to 2014 and 2016. You’ve got Cruz and other pretenders and preeners thinking that their histrionics are going to get them to the WH. So, we’ll be right back at this in no time at all because GOP/TPExtortionists want to be right back here attempting to delay/defund/destroy Obamacare, while Democrats want to show the TPExtortionists that they are out of control extremists who put their political aspirations above those of the country. They’re talking to two different constituencies so they’re both going ahead with this.

And the economy will limp along as a result.

Instead of the GOP leadership squashing this like a bug and ending the ACA defund/delay/destroy nonsense and actually fashioning an alternative that includes fixing/improving facets of the program that may really need to be fixed, they’re going along and encouraging the extortionists.

We’ll be into this all through to 2016. And by then, the GOP will be still be claiming the economy has been wrecked by Obamacare, even as the GOP has been courting disaster with their flirtations with defaulting to extort defunding/delaying/destroying Obamacare.

Goes to show you no matter how hard you derp, you can’t derp enough for the GOP base. You know there’s someone out there who probably thinks Rand Paul and Ted Cruz don’t go far enough.

Thank you. In my original response to you I pointed out that as a Muslim I read & hear things about Muslims every single day that are just as bad if not worse than what the wingnuts say about liberals. Things like we’re all untrustworthy, a bunch of sub-human bloodthirsty thugs, we should be forced to convert, stripped of our constitutional rights & protections, placed in internment camps, deported, etc.

These things don’t all come from the far-right either, so I don’t have much sympathy for liberals who feel the need to lash out, especially when it comes to something like forced sterilization—a horror which tens of thousands of real people endured here in the U.S. up until the latter part of the last century (and even well into this one, if you count what happened in California). Some states, like North Carolina, have paid millions of dollars in compensation to victims of their past forced sterilization policies.

I also don’t return the insults in kind because 1.) from a practical perspective it would only make things worse & make me part of the problem, 2.) I think it’s flat out wrong to give voice to ugly shit like that which can get out of hand & result in real life harm, and 3.) “do unto others” and all that. As for Kumbaya, it has a much deeper history & meaning than the naive optimism that’s typically being implied when it’s used in a derogatory manner.

so again, my apologies as I do believe that we’re still on the same side.

Again, thank you—apologies accepted & appreciated. No harm, no foul. Consider the whole episode forgotten.
