It is a shame I could not watch the debate. ABC’s streaming will not work through my telephone company’s DSL. (Curious, the Republican debates worked just fine.)

I am very disappointed that the DNC chose to hold debates at obscure times like a Saturday night before Christmas.

My county party did not support me for my re-election to my city council (I am the only Democrat elected in my county), the state party won’t talk to me, and the national party hides its debates. In a fundraising call (the only time the party contacts me), I noted I will not give to the party until it cleans this mess up; I only give directly to candidates.

14
BeachDem  Dec 19, 2015 • 8:03:13pm

Well, one person showed up to watch, so I did and couldn’t be online at the same time. Going to go back to read the last thread, but just wanted to say that after watching the shitshow the other night and then the reasoned intelligent conversation tonight, anyone who would vote for ANY of the Republican candidates is a fool.

Back in a bit—going to see what you all had to say during the debate.

Is O’Malley actually campaigning anywhere? Does he have money? I can’t believe he is still in this race.

24
wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  Dec 19, 2015 • 8:12:13pm

Repeating this from the previous thread.

I’m still dealing with a balky network connection here at the university, and after updating my router’s firmware and even bypassing it to hook my laptop directly to the network, I’ve decided the problem is with the university network, and not my equipment. My neighbors report the same problems as I have.

I am suspecting there is a DHCP problem, or maybe a DNS problem. You network wonks can help me here.

When I first connect, everything goes well. Quick page loads, download times, etc. Then after about 10-15 minutes, connectivity bogs down. Pages stop loading, or there are time-out errors. The IM client on my phone loses its network connection on WiFi. If I keep trying to reload a page, eventually it will load, but it takes about 6 tries for something to happen.

But, if I enter my router’s UI and request a new IP address from DHCP, everything goes back to normal again. For another 10-15 minutes or so.

Hooking my laptop to the campus network made no difference, except it’s not as easy in Windows to request a new IP address. So, I’m using my router again.

The connection is PPPoE and they just rewired the building with CAT5 two years ago. Brand new switches and stuff in the cabinet downstairs, too. Last month, the campus IT department was reconfiguring the network and that’s when things started to go weird. Last month, the problem was wonky DNS connections that affected page loads but not other network functions. This month, it’s the DHCP weirdness.

Can any of you experts guess what’s wrong? I want to be intelligent when I explain the situation to the IT dept. Thanks!

PS I should add that using my VPN seems to eliminate some of the connectivity issues.

OT - saw Star Wars today. Well worth seeing in the theatre (3D, not IMAX); will buy the Blu-Ray for this one, unlike Eps I-III which I never wanted to watch twice. The 17-year-old approved, says it successfully avoided prequelitis. Spouse and I both liked it; amusing to see Han & Leia as old farts, being one meself.

When I saw the original in 1977 (14 times), I said it was a great popcorn movie. This one is too. Suffers a bit from first-in-a-trilogy syndrome, threads dangling all over the ending, but c’est le guerre. Looking forward to watching the second one when it comes out.

Old school, literally.

Apparently, it’s now possible to add in cold weather breath vapor clouds in post-processing. The actors then get to work in normal room temperature sets dressed up like Eskimos, pretending to be cold while actually sweating bullets under their clothes. Putting them in low-temperature sets makes the whole scene more realistic, and IMO as an amateur, easier to act in.

73
BeachDem  Dec 19, 2015 • 9:23:34pm

And again, Newsweek deliberates the REALLY important takeaways from the debate:

Where did Hillary Clinton go during the commercial break?

In the definitive odd moment of Saturday night’s Democratic debate, Clinton was missing for a few seconds after ABC resumed the debate following the first commercial break of the event…

Did she have to go to the bathroom? Did she have a wardrobe malfunction or some problem in the backstage? We probably will not know until after the debate.

This reminds me of Terence Stamp’s comments on filming Episode 1. This is from an article dated 2013, but I remember reading a much longer quote while the film was still in pre-production.

So why did he do the movie in the first place? Two answers: pressure from his agent and his desire to work with Natalie Portman, who impressed him with her performance in Luc Besson’s The Professional. But when he got to the set in Australia the disappointment continued. Said Stamp about working with the actress, “I did meet her and she was absolutely enchanting. But on the day I’m supposed to do my scene with her, for which I’d traveled halfway around the world, I said, ‘Where’s Natalie?’ And George says, ‘That’s Natalie,’ and points to a bit of paper on the wall. It was just boring.”

cinemablend.com

I remember more details about acting in a scene in a green-screen environment, when the other “actor” was a marker stick… And him calling it something a bit more harsh than “boring”.

Any smart director would very sensibly try to avoid repeating GL’s mistakes, and try to bring back the magic of the first movies. It seems JJ Abrams was paying attention. :)

I’ve been a movie extra. For one scene, we had to play an enthusiastic concert audience going crazy and cheering a big X made with gaffer’s tape on the stage.

I can’t imagine doing a one-on-one scene with a big X instead of the real actor. I guess pros learn to adapt to the situation.

It’s worth noting that the leading stars can tell directors which scenes they want to be in, and which ones they would prefer a big X or a stand in to appear in.

Not an easy thing to be true to the spirit of the original ‘Star Trek’ concept and characters, but also able to compete with the energy and spectacle of today’s sci fi/fantasy movies - JJ really seems to have the knack for this sort of thing.

Barefoot Grin  Dec 19, 2015 • 9:37:24pm

Since my wife is volunteering for Sanders, I went with her to the event held in Manchester tonight. Of course, the crowd loved Bernie, but they sometimes responded well to HRC and often to O’Malley. O’Malley did so poorly in the first debate that anything would be an improvement, but from the reactions around me, he seemed to do particularly well. My own take was that he basically rephrased much of what Bernie said; and it was basically his “statistics” approach to policing that led to the epic levels of mistrust between the police and black citizens (at least according to David Simon).

Anyway, may take (oops, I already said that): Bernie has a good following, but seems simpleminded on the Middle East and the role of America (though I an tending to agree with him about the limits of American power). O’Malley would likely take from Bernie rather than Hillary. I think Hillary won tonight. She will be acceptable because she will be a safe hold for the progressive gains of the Obama years without doing serious damage to Wall St. or the defense industry (which, really, is another legacy of the Obama years).

re: #82 Aye Pod

I watched “Star Trek Into Darkness” last week and thought it was awesome, as good or better than the first reboot. Not an easy thing to be true to the spirit of the original ‘Star Trek’ concept and characters, but also able to compete with the energy and spectacle of today’s sci fi/fantasy movies - JJ really seems to have the knack for this sort of thing.

Though Star Trek purists are really pissed about the altered timeline. They wanted to see “their” Captain Kirk & Co. live out all the events mentioned in the previous series as backstory. Abrams wisely scrapped that idea, so he could make a movie to appeal to people who know nothing about the ST Universe.

But I have to say the young actors playing Kirk, Spock, Uhura, McCoy, Sulu, Chekhov and Scotty do a really great job in capturing the personalities of their predecessors.

Definitely. Dee Kelley would approve of his characterization, complete with the fear of flying, divorced wife taking everything and McCoy having nowhere else to turn for a job than Starfleet.

Kelley’s McCoy was a champion complainer.

The fundamental problem with prequels is that the audience knows how it will end. So there’s no real suspense. It is actually damn near impossible to do well.

That said, over the last few weeks, I’ve been rewatching all the movies as well as the clone wars. When all six movies are taken as a complete story, the prequels aren’t actually that bad. The problem is that Lucas is just not a good writer and he insisted on writing the prequels himself.

I just finished re-viewing the original series (in original cuts.)

Reminds me of my younger days, back when I first saw them.

Anyway, using my older and more critical eye, these movies now seem so-so to me. The cinematography was fine, especially in the first one, but then Lucas was more in charge. The dialogue throughout the series though is groan-inducing.

Still, I plan on treating myself to a trip to one of those fancy 3-D places for the first time, once the crowds die down.

That is, in my opinion, a large part of the reason that the prequels stank on ice. Lucas surrounded himself with sycophants who didn’t want to stand up to the “Great George Lucas” and tell him that his ideas sucked. It wasn’t like when he made the original trilogy, when he was subservient to the studio and to their demands. He was the big boss, he was calling the shots, and everybody else knew it.

The Force Awakens is awesome. All things considered, it might be the better than any of the others. Part of that might be that they didn’t have to do any of the world building that they needed to in A New Hope or Phantom Menance. And part is definitely that the dialogue isn’t fucking terrible.

Funny thing about Jar Jar: He was the one in the senate who made the original proposal (at Palpatines urging), to allow the Chancellor to have increased powers. This of course led to the formation of the Empire and the destruction of the Jedi.

No. I get how this is tempting because he’s so unequivocally awful that people want to believe that maybe he was pulling an elaborate Kaiser Soze all along, but he was just Lucas’ cynical attempt to pander to what he perceived as the immaturity of children in the audience, who he did not in any way respect.

Yeah, I see the theory as a sort of effort to assume creativity on Lucas’ part that just isn’t evident anywhere else. To assume that Jar Jar’s stupidity was a ploy the entire time, that he was the Big Bad pulling all the strings, just sort of destroys the Emperor as a character.

Exactly. People who get immersed in a fictional universe are obsessed with all its tiny details, and go nuts whenever there’s a contradiction with canon. The Star Trek franchise has done a reasonably good job in creating a consistent future history, but it’s fiction, for pete’s sake. If all the previous series could go back in time to “fix things,” why can’t the new film series alter the timeline to create a whole new set of circumstances?

123
Pawn of the Oppressor  Dec 19, 2015 • 10:11:31pm

He was also a massive point of employment for artists. Nobody was going to risk getting fired from Star Wars.

“I need five thousand design sketches of goofy droids to cram into this pointless battle scene.”
“Yes sir!”

I was caught up in the Prequel hype right from the beginning. There was so much genuine love and excitement for the new films, because people had waited an entire generation and new Star Wars was like the ultimate Christmas present. And then… Well, we all know what happened. I’m still traumatized years later. :P I simply cannot get excited about new Star Wars because I don’t want to be hurt again!

I’m sure somewhere I have a JPG copy of the first ever concept painting that was released, of a yellow skyship docked at a building on Coruscant. I’m pretty sure it was a Ralph McQuarrie painting, too. That was sooooo exciting because it was going to be a new world, rendered in the old style. I was expecting mythology and big tales of good and evil and instead we got fucking Jar Jar and racist caricatures as villains.

What I liked so much about the originals was the unapologetic, unpretentious way the SW universe was dropped right in your lap without any explanation or “Look at me!” paint-by-numbers Epic Battle Scenes. The characters were all at home in fantastic scenery and if they saw something REALLY amazing, like a space slug inside an asteroid or a battle station as big as a moon, they were impressed too. Even the performers were confused by their lines - how many times have we heard the stories from Hamill, Fisher, etc - “I didn’t even know what I was saying half the time”, “George, you can write this shit but I can’t say it”… That feeling was somehow lost in the Prequels.

Anyway I hear people are really happy with the new movie, so I’ll make extra effort to see it this week sometime. I waited out the weekend to avoid crowds and possible terrorism/random whacko shootings.

Well, as a Star Trek fan (I actually have a character named after me in a novel), this is what Abrams definitely did NOT do with INTO DARKNESS. With all this freedom to do new stuff, this was a cheeky rehash of WRATH OF KHAN that was doomed to failure precisely because it was in a new continuity, and shorn of the years of age and experience that gave the original such resonance (for Khan, Kirk and Spock).

That’s just evidence that Lucas threw the Jar Jar haters a bone by making him responsible for the Empire. It actually undermines the idea that he was ever intended to be some nefarious genius all along.

I would have loved to have seen a seen a Usual Suspects reference tacked onto the end, after the credits, where Obi Wan is sitting in a cave trying to piece it all together, looking at a wall full of evidence and suddenly bits of Jar Jar’s whole back story are all revealed to be lies. Then a beautiful montage sequence with Jar Jar walking along and transitioning from an awkward gait to a smooth pace, lots of past dialog suddenly fits a this new context and finally he gets into a land speeder driven by Pete Postlethwaite.

But that didn’t happen. He was just a ****.

See, that’s sort of like the whole bit about how Nero’s backstory in Star Trek was so much more compelling and sympathetic if one reads the comic books that preceded the film. That you get a sense of what his motivations are, why he hates the Federation so much, and what the tattoos were all about. It works hard to meld the old franchise with the Abramsverse in a fashion that would make fans at least accepting of the new set-up.

But, as one reviewer I heard declared, if you have to read the books to understand what’s going on in the film, then you’ve failed as a storyteller.

I’m guessing that, “person of color” in this case would mean “not a pasty Brit” (even though I think Cumberbatch did a fairly good job), someone that could at least pass for Indian/SW Asian, in keeping with Montelban’s playing of the part.

The War Doctor would be interesting if only because we’d get to see more of the time war - but also troubling because it’ll kill some of the mystery and runs into the prequel problem I mentioned above. I think that Doctor Who should be nominated for an Emmy this year. With one exception, all of these episodes were launched out of the park.

I think either the Zygon two-parter (and it’s beautiful anti-war message) or the Doctor’s despair and desperation in Heaven Sent would be perfect.

Sherlock was nominated, and won, Emmys two years ago, and they are produced and many of the episodes written by the same man, Steven Moffat.

I’m guessing that, “person of color” in this case would mean “not a pasty Brit” (even though I think Cumberbatch did a fairly good job), someone that could at least pass for Indian/SW Asian, in keeping with Montelban’s playing of the part.

Hmmm….I might have considered Cumberbatch as a superman, but as one of the henchmen, and not Khan himself….his motivation was loyalty to Khan and trying to free him…

Lest I forget…

Mary Anne Talbot, remembered to this day as “Powder Monkey Anne,” served as a drummer boy in the battle for Valenciennes, and fought in the battle of Ushant, among other naval engagements during the Napoleonic Wars. She lived to the ripe age of ninety-seven. The principal duty of a powder monkey was to carry bags of gunpowder from the vessel’s below-deck magazine to the gun deck above. Sounds like a really shitty job.

One little thing from the debate that bugged me was the notion that the middle class extends to households making $250K per year. What the fuck is that and when did it start? Because it’s one of those ways in which self centered pricks use their power to define the middle class in ways that are wildly unrealistic for the vast majority of families making anywhere near the median income.

The sheer assholeness of the people who perpetuate this bullshit is simply amazing.

Like I was saying with the comic books and Star Trek, the comics also covered the backstory to Into Darkness to explain Khan’s appearance. That Section 31 had found the Botany Bay, defrosted Khan, and then subjected him to reconstructive surgery as well as wiping his memories. Then when he woke up, they explained to him that he was Lt. John Harrison, a Starfleet Intel officer who’d been injured on a mission and suffered memory loss as a result. He was put to work building new weapons and creating new plans, culminating in a mission that cause the Klingon moon of Praxis to explode. But on that mission, he suffered a blow to the head, and when he came to his original memories reasserted themselves. He suddenly knew who he was, but Adm. Marcus had custody of his family. Hence where the film starts.

But, again, if you have to read the supplementary material in order for the story to make sense, then you suck as a writer.

Ummm…

Talbot continued to use sailor’s clothes, worked in menial jobs and even tried her luck on stage at Drury Lane but eventually was arrested and taken to debtor’s prison at Newgate. When she was released she became a household servant for publisher Robert S. Kirby at his home in St Paul’s Churchyard, London and worked for him for three years until her health deteriorated. She went to live with friends in Shropshire and died a few weeks later aged 34, on 4 February 1808.[4]

Yes! It is a nod to Manhattanites, I’ll bet. We’re at about the median (finally but not ever sure) and that’s slightly less than five times what we make. It’s a political ploy to not alienate the people who won’t vote for you anyway.

What kills me about it is you never see the people who so cynically label themselves according to this classification turning around and advocating that their less affluent neighbors within these high cost of living communities, whose income is closer to the median national income, receive government assistance.

It’s a kind of predator’s camouflage. They want to benefit from a well functioning community without having to contribute towards it in relation to their inordinate dependance upon it. They benefit more from the mere existence of society, because they have farther to fall, but can’t possibly bring themselves to admit this simple fact.

I caught the tail-end of a NPR “This American Life” this afternoon while operating the kid ferry. It seemed to be about a San Francisco elementary school staging a show called “The Eviction.” The punchline was that the correspondent, a New York Magazine writer, had a child in the play and was also just being priced out of his neighborhood. He took great pains to not blame the IT neighbors who found themselves able to move and bargain for 25% above their original asking price, but it was pretty clear that the children’s play is like the unrealistic response to our income gap. The correspondent said something like ‘in the second act I looked over and saw my wife crying’: she saw children playing out what was just about to happen to her family. Of course, this was an NPR story, so the family moved to a small town where they could afford a home and everything was ok. But not so for the cop or teacher or firefighter who has a fixed address to report to for his or her job.

Meanwhile, in poking around the internet, I finally - finally! - found some evidence of a genuine, bona fide, War on Christmas.

It’s in Japan.

TOKYO — Anti-Christmas protesters calling themselves “Losers with Women” marched through Tokyo’s streets Saturday, bashing the upcoming holiday as a capitalist ploy that also discriminates against singletons.

The group of about 20—part of the Communist-inspired group that routinely protests Western holidays—marched under angry banners that read “Smash Christmas!” in Tokyo’s Shibuya district, where couples and families strolled for holiday shopping.

The scrooges—mostly single men—said they were against capitalism and were opposed to the commercialisation of Christmas.

“In this world, money is extracted from people in love, and happy people support capitalism,” said the head of the organisation, formally called Kakumeiteki Hi-mote Domei, or the Revolutionary Losers’ League.

“Christmas is the most symbolic event for this,” he added.

The man, who identified himself only by the pseudonym MarkWater, said the rally was also in support of unloved men.

“Unpopular men, who don’t have a girlfriend or are not married, are overly discriminated. We want to break this barrier,” he told AFP amid the shouting protesters.

In Japan, Christmas is not an official holiday and is mostly celebrated informally as a romantic event for couples, while New Year’s Day is an occasion for family reunion.

The group has held past marches to denounce imported Western holidays, including rallies against Valentine’s Day.

So you better watch out, you’d better not cry, you’d better not pout, I’m telling you why……

There’s some discontent in China about the celebration of some Western holidays, but they’re good for the economy, so mostly it’s the traditionalists that complain. People buy gifts for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas, and some younger people who have studied American culture have kind of adopted Thanksgiving as a time to, y’know, thank people dear to them.

But the traditional holidays, especially Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) are supreme. No worries in China about Western holidays taking over.

Those Japanese losers need to start their own holiday, like Chinese Single’s Day (11/11). It was started by some college students several years, and has caught on as an excuse for singles to spend money on themselves.

Pussy Riot: If America Wants its Own Putin, Vote for Trump

Maria Alekhina, member of the feminist punk rock group Pussy Riot, sat for an interview yesterday about her thoughts on Vladimir Putin’s compliments of Donald Trump.

Alekhina warned that American attitudes to the frontrunner are very similar to those who didn’t think much of Putin before his reign. She expressed deep concern about those who still think of Trump as a joke, and said that those who vote for him are voting for an Americanized version of the Russian president.

Glad to see the Dems were able to show the country and the world what a sane political debate looks like (aka not a lineup of clowns trying to top each other for crazy).

In other news, I was saddened, yet pleased to see the New York Times noted the death of Alden Amos, a highly influential spinning wheel maker, at age 77. I have his Big Book of Handspinning sitting about eight feet away from where I sit.

nytimes.com

Amos was quite opinionated; he did not approve of Navajo plying (which is a way of plying a spun single back on itself to make a three-ply yarn), but it’s my personal favorite way of plying. That said, even I, still a neophyte at the craft of spinning after five years, salute him in his passing. I wouldn’t have the very nice spinning wheel sitting at my left elbow if it hadn’t been for him tinkering around and improving the ways wheels work. (21st Century know-how married to a 16th century technology FTW!)

My dad had taken me to the original so yesterday I went with him and step-mom. She has had 3 bouts w/cancer and the associated chemo, radiation and drugs have left her very fuzzy. So she didn’t really recall the previous movies or characters but she enjoyed it as well. I was quite surprised to find our noon showing only had about 25 people in the theater. Maybe that was due to them having showings every 15 minutes or so but thought it was odd.

There’s a significant chunk of the Iowa GOP that are very religious and very much able to force the party in that state into the religious right camp.

They may be a minority of the state overall, but they are large enough to make the GOP in Iowa act like they’re in Oklahoma or Texas.

Yeah, but there are too many deaths which have been slightly too convenient to Vlad & the Kremlin Crew, and consistently so. So while they may be able to fully maintain isolation from the cleaning crews, they can’t quite in terms of the effects of the deaths.

Russia is a dangerous place for journalists, and it hasn’t started with Putin. I don’t think anyone accused Yeltsin of murdering journalists tho.

Putin certainly has direct responsibility in some cases - e.g. for covering for Kadyrov, who most likely was behind Nemtsov’s (and possibly Estemirova’s) death. However “covering for murderers” is not the claim being made, the claim is that he orders the murders, and there’s no evidence of that.

It’s not enough to point to a list of dead “critics of Putin” to establish even plausibility of such a thesis. Being critics was not the only thing these people did, it wasn’t their profession, being “critics of Putin”, they were not one-dimensional. They were, first and foremost, journalists or politicians who were engaged in investigation of many dangerous topics at once, having to do with crime, terrorism, mafia. Hence they were exposed to a heightened risk with or without saying anything about Putin.

Politkovskaya, for example, was focused on Chechnya and had lots of enemies there, on any given side. Paul Klebnikov published a whole book, Conversation with a Barbarian, about a Chechen terrorist Nukhayev, who later became a suspect in his murder. Yushenkov was murdered by a former political ally, a leader of the pro-Berezovsky wing of the “Liberal Russia” party Mikhail Kodanyov.

And so on. In each case there is a plausible motive that is not directly related to Putin. So to draw hasty conclusions from such lists is to commit a basic logical mistake.

Looking at the story, it seems that the suspect tried to reach for an officers gun which resulted in them opening fire against him. Which would mean shots fired at extremely close range, and if the cop(s) is anywhere near good marks(wo)men…
And if the suspect remained combattive after being shot, it severely reduces the chances of his own survival if the shot has taken bad enough, both in terms of delaying their own care and in terms of exacerbating inflicted injuries and their effects. For example, Anton Lundin Petterson lunged against the police officers who arrived at the scene, forcing them to fire for effect. He then was combattive against the officers as they went to check his status and stabilize him until ambulance arrived. IIRC, he was DoA at the hospital.

I love how Raw Story puts it:

Although it is widely believed that Putin was involved in the death of at least eight journalists for criticizing him

Since when is a belief, even the one that is shared widely, evidence of anything? That’s the National Enquirer level.

They even link to a typical piece of tabloid “journalism”, which is as superficial, as it is misleading. E.g.:

:: Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova - 2009

Leading human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov was gunned down in broad daylight on 19 January, 2009.

Flowers placed at the spot where Stanislav Markelov and Anastasiya Baburova were gunned down
Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were both shot dead

Journalist Anastasia Baburova, 25, was shot dead after she tried to come to his assistance.

Mr Markelov had just held a press conference to protest at the early release of an army colonel who was jailed for the killing of a young Chechen girl. He had also represented the murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

It is written as if right now, in 2015, we didn’t know who the murderers were and what motives they had. Except we do. In detail. They were a band of neo-Nazis, who indeed murdered Markelov (Baburova was a “collateral” victim) because of his antifascist work, and specifically because he, as a lawyer, was going to make Budanov’s life more complicated.

A real journalist would have noted that there are questions of (indirect) responsibility in that this neo-Nazi group wanted to go “legal” (think IRA/Sinn Fein) and its ideological leader tried to cultivate ties with certain govt agencies responsible for supervision of political movements - such informal supervision being one of the staples of Putin’s system.

But it’s so much easier to just put them on a list of murdered “Putin’s critics” without any further context, because it serves the narrative and nobody’s gonna check anyway.

And probably also with those few still self-identifying as Republicans even though they are not what we would describe as “wingnuts”.

Now, the DNC might be quite happy with that, as they think Trump would lose easily in the general election.

It’s that last step in the argument that I am not thinking needs to be re-examined.

I’m not sure why. Holding the powder until the general elections? Or that they think that GOTV is going to be strong enough.

The GOP are tapping into anger and hate, which are strong motivators. The Democrats will need to transform fear of what a GOP extremist agenda will do to the nation to get people to vote against the GOP - whoever they nominate.

The choices on the GOP side range from batcrap crazy to flat out fascist. There’s no moderate among the bunch. All want to see ACA repealed. All would roll back the safety net. All would push tax cuts to the rich and shift tax burdens on everyone else.

I sound like a broken record on this, but those are the facts. They need to be hammered home.

The GOP wants people to think that the economy sucks and the only way it gets better is if we cut taxes for the rich. The reality is that the GOP has delayed the economic recovery with their obstructionism.

That’s what the DNC must convey. And they must do better.

Or else all the fears in what the GOP will do will come to pass.

Interesting thread. I did not know Jar Jar Binks debated Capt’t Kirk about the evils of George Lucas and how he ruined a universe like TRUMP(r) is about to destroy another.

And it was on a planet far far away from ordinary Earthlings who were busy on a Saturday night with holiday sporting events and could not pay attention to the earthly wars of Evil Warlord Clinton over the Jewish Jedi Sanders and Luke O’Malley .

Or, something.

But to the real point of BeachDem’s comment. Yeah it was stupid to have a Saturday night debate. The viewership will be slight. I would have watched myself, but some friends had a little seasonal get-together and it was more important not to ask to watch or have it on and best not to even discuss politics as it was a mixed crowd. I didn’t say it, but I was wondering if that meant they are going to vote now because of Trump, or if they ever got around to voting it would be for Trump. Does the poll even matter???

I just said I had not heard that and moved on. Your comment reminded me of his comment.

So, I got around to peering down rabbit holes on the Charley Project website, and it’s certainly given me quite the education as to the limitations of the law, especially the missing persons section.

When I read through the cases, it’s obvious a few of them are most likely suicides. a few I’d describe as accidental death or death by misadventure, and certainly I’m sure quite a few who’ve simply run off and started their lives over elsewhere. But there are others - like this one:

charleyproject.org

that reveal the limitations of law enforcement agencies. And then there’s this one:

charleyproject.org

which caused me to have to go look up Ted Bundy: The young woman in that case, Rhonda Louise Burse, was a dancer at The Flame in Burien, WA. One of Bundy’s victims also worked there, so I had to go back and check. Bundy was in jail when Ms. Burse disappeared.

Now here’s the thing - Ms. Burse has a shocking resemblance to the mom of an ex-girlfriend I lived with back in the early-1990s when I was living in Portland, OR. Indeed, my ex’s resemblance to her mother was uncanny. Her mom would be about the right age for Ms. Burse as well. Wish I knew where my PDX-ex was. Who knows? Maybe a mystery solved.

Ahh, one of KT’s favorite tellers of “truth”, the undying defense of Cumia ending up being KT’s “hill to die on” here before Charles showed him the door.

Color me surprised that Cumia’s not only a racist bigot, but a violent one at that.

So Trump was on Faux and Friends this morning (the Sunday edition?)

Anyway, Faux luv’s them some Trump.

Anyway, sitting in the middle is the Faux babe, and what I notice is that she’s looking babe-ier than the usual Faux babes, as if they’re dressing their babes to be sluttier than usual.

Let’s run images of soldier coffins coming home when Republicans are on tv. (No. Not really. But fuck Fox.)

I was thinking any time we have Trump being questioned, we can just show images of all the business ventures of his that have gone into bankruptcy.

I didn’t even know/remember that it was on.

Perhaps the DNC needs to start thinking in terms other than their score-keeping for Hillary. There’s a bigger problem afoot, with the popularity of Trump, than simply making Bernie apologize for some procedural mistake.

The problem with that is that it would involve actually accepting the idea of Donald Trump being elected president. That’s a pretty horrifying thought, and it may be too much for some.

SNL’s “A Hilary Christmas” skit with 2007 Hilary, 2015 Hilary, and 20?? Palin (Tina Fey) is good for a few chuckles.

I’ve known that guy was bad news for over a decade, so I knew Killgore was holding a hill zeroed in by Fact Artillery and Decency Mortars, but I could not get him to even consider that he might be wrong. No one could, so Charles had to show him the exit.

One of the images going around Twitter shows all the billionaires who “own” various GOP candidates. The punchline being that Trump is not on that image, thus he’s one of us.

Trump isn’t the illness of the GOP. He could implode tomorrow and the party would still be the rotten bunch of racist homophobic sexist shit stain it is with him. Republicans can blame Trump but they’ve created this. Be grown ups and admit you’ve created a party based on resentment and fear of others not like you and maybe you’ll deserve a more kinder fate.

Johnson works for FAIR which turned out to be a Putinist apologetics front. His greatest problem with Putin is that he’s a neo-liberal.
Sirota posts photos of American diplomatic meetings with various dictators to prove something something.

Yes, I’m sure that without Clinton’s close, the movie would be totally tanking.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered numerous box-office records over the weekend, grossing $238 million in North America — the biggest opening of all time, not accounting for inflation — for a global launch of $517 million.

People. Are. Pathetic.
