Basically she knows she has no other choice than to say “the state makes us do this”. La Mesa is not an especially wingnutty part of the county. If she was running out in Spring Valley then maybe she could be more overt.

But this again shows that it is really up to the community to be what it needs to be. If the State was not so clear about what science standards have to be, then we would be facing creationists at every turn. So all that work to make sure California politics is influenced by progressive, and secular, ideas does really pay off.

Yeah, I don’t even think it was 12 hours before that shit started.

I had to have my car towed Thursday. The tow truck driver thinks that the shooter was a patsy (swear to God, he used that exact word); but wants a strict national background check, so he can have the exact same weapons the military has, so he can fight back if the gubmint turns on us.

Unanswered questions:

1) The shooter was a patsy of who, exactly? Strict gun control is the last thing on the current government’s mind. It makes no sense that he was set up by them.

If he was set up by anti-gun people, what would be the end game there? 20 dead 1st graders didn’t convince the GOP to enact tougher gun laws. 59 adult CW fans certainly won’t.

2) He honestly thinks he and his buddies are going to turn back our highly trained military (whose members he probably thanks for their service every time he sees them) because Red Dawn is a documentary.

3) You want the government to make weapons as difficult as possible to get, yet are constantly worried they’re going to on you?

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Szechuan (nowadays more often rendered Sichuan) is the first Chinese cuisine I attempted. I’ve got only a few recipes really down pat…and none of the elegant ones, but man do I love it. But I can’t do the chile heat and Sichuan peppercorn sting the way the locals do. I know it’s a total waste of brain power, but I find myself considering the whole “Szechuan sauce” thing just because it’s like a culinary brain teaser…what would I put together and slap that label on?

Yeah it’s more spicy from what I understand. I should seek out a Szechuan place next time I find myself in a place with a heavy Chinese population.

Happy, when I was a kid I thought eating Chinese food was when Mom would open a can of La Choy Chow Mein—the old double cans with the meat & gravy in the smaller upper can and the vegetables in the lower larger can. Mom would then open a can of La Choy Chow Mein noodles and we’d dig in. Then Mom and Dad heard of the Bellevue Tea Garden. We went there and I had my first experience with broccoli beef and shrimp in lobster sauce. HEAVEN. I never wanted to go back to La Choy after that…

Sichuan is to die for. They tone the spice down for Americans, and usually the American menus have warnings for the really spicy ones, like good Mexican places do. Unlike Hunan cuisine, which uses hot peppers to the point you can’t taste anything but, Sichuan has a more balanced taste, IMO.

Sichuan pepper are little seeds that aren’t capsaicin peppers at all. If you don’t like the numbing effect, you can pick them out. Chopsticks are handy for that.

God there was this one Chinese dessert my Taiwanese coworker when I worked at a tech firm brought in. It had red bean in it tho. So good. He was a great coworker. We’d have lunch and he’d teach me about China. Even later met his family when he put together a pick up game between some of us and his friends.

Plant evolution is very difficult to understand, because soft tissues do not readily create fossils, and because plants are freer to do weird things with DNA than animals do.

The Rutaceae, like several plant families, are found globally. Which means they really get their seeds around, or their common origin is long ago.

Long time ago, when I was in school, it was not clear when flowering plants first appeared. Then the idea was that Magnolias are the oldest extant form of flowers. Now I think the idea is that flowering plants are much older.

China is a really fascinating place. Chinese history was one of the most challenging classes I took as an undergraduate but well worth it. I had a great professor. Tough grader but I loved how he taught the class because we learned about how the history impacted average Chinese citizens as well as famous names like Mao, Sun Yat-sen, & Chiang Kai Shek.

I think it’s a d*mn shame that some of the same people who want science turned into creationism also think that their kids will be well-equipped to have successful careers in science-related fields. Kids that learn creationism as science can probably get into college after high school, but they’ll find themselves having to play catch-up a few seconds after they enter their college biology and/or physics classroom and look at the syllabuses for those classes.

I’ve actually known kids who transferred from private Christian schools to the public high school where I taught, and many of them struggled to learn the 10th Grade physical science they should have learned in 8th Grade. These would often be kids who were accustomed to making a grade of 90 and above in science classes. I have nothing against parochial schools, but I think those that substitute creationism for science do a disservice to their students. My beautician’s grandson attends a Christian elementary school. I’ve seen some of his assignments, and almost all of them have some reference to God or the Bible. He attended a Christian school until the Third Grade. When that school closed, he attended a public elementary school for one year and struggled academically. The following year, he was back in a Christian school and according to her, he’s “excelling.” SMDH.

The only thing I don’t see in recipes is certain kinds of ocean fish and molluscs. Otherwise they’ve got access to pretty much all the meat options, plus tofu.

It really is. We read a great book called women in the Chinese Enlightenment and it covered a few women, all of whom lived well into their 90’s experiences of the 20th century. You had one who was part of the KNT, another who was CCP. Amazing lives they lived. Agree about Sun too. I’d love to learn more about him and his ideas.

Sichuan is to die for. They tone the spice down for Americans, and usually the American menus have warnings for the really spicy ones, like good Mexican places do. Unlike Hunan cuisine, which uses hot peppers to the point you can’t taste anything but, Sichuan has a more balanced taste, IMO.

Sichuan pepper are little seeds that aren’t capsaicin peppers at all. If you don’t like the numbing effect, you can pick them out. Chopsticks are handy for that.

There was a really good Sichuan place up in Camas, WA of all places. And like you said, they had the warnings for the really spicy dishes, which they billed as “authentic” Sichuan cuisine. I tried that one time. Remember that scene in Terminator 2?…..the nuke scene? Yeah, that’s pretty much what the inside of my mouth felt like.

Make no mistake, this is no “analysis” as he has it labeled. And the thing you need to realize is Cillizza KNOWS that Clinton doesn’t support rape and sexual assault, he just wants make her respond. It’s him using his forum to make her jump- he might as well be saying “Dance, mad bitch, dance,” because we all know that if she does respond, Cillizza’s next piece will be “what took her so long” and “was she sincere” and so on.

A Bernie Sanders Supporter Is Trying To Turn Nebraska Purple

State party chair Jane Kleeb thinks Democrats need to pay more attention to rural voters.

They mostly put “Bernie Sanders” in the title (based on the way I read the article) to note Jane Kleeb supported Sanders in the primary, and to generate clicks.

The article goes on to say how Sanders support of Heath Mello for Omaha mayor likely hurt his chances.

The article talks about how Mrs. Kleeb is trying to rebuild what was nearly a defunct party in this state, and flip the state to purple.

Overall, the article is pretty good. Of note, the article points out the Democratic Party in Nebraska does not pay the state party chair anything, meaning all her work is for free and she must maintain her regular work in addition to running the state party.

The first thing you have to do, Kleeb said, “is you just have to show up.”

Visibility is a theme Kleeb keeps coming back to ― whether its a booth at the state fair, a pamphlet-wielding volunteer at a livestock auction house, or on the ballot. It represents an improvement over the status quo for the state’s Democrats, who have been defined by low morale after years of neglect from the national party.

“I can’t expect a voter to all of a sudden ― if they’re an independent or even a moderate Republican ― to vote for Democrats if they never see us on the issues that they care about,” Kleeb said.

In this context, refurbishing the office feels like a tastefully bedecked war cry: a rebuttal to the naysayers that even in blood-red Nebraska, there is a Democratic Party, a party with history, one that stands for something, and ― this is the part Kleeb really wants to drive home ― one that’s actually trying.

Democratic pundits in the article note it would be impossible to elect a Democrat to a rural seat in Nebraska, because the Democratic strategists believe that Nebraskans see Democrats as liberal coastal elites (cough cough, they didn’t talk to me, vice-mayor cough cough).

Mrs. Kleeb noted when she took over the state office after winning the seat of party chair, she noted it was held together by “duct tape and beer cans,” saying the national party is uninterested in rural voters.

She brings to the table her organising skills as the leader of Bold Nebraska. The organisation wedded conservative ranchers (she is a rancher herself but not conservative), hunters, conservationists, ecologists, Native American tribes, landowners, &c to successfully fight off the Keystone XL Pipeline in the state courts (Nebraska is still the only state standing in the way of that).

The missing links between galaxies have finally been found. This is the first detection of the roughly half of the normal matter in our universe - protons, neutrons and electrons - unaccounted for by previous observations of stars, galaxies and other bright objects in space.
You have probably heard about the hunt for dark matter, a mysterious substance thought to permeate the universe, the effects of which we can see through its gravitational pull. But our models of the universe also say there should be about twice as much ordinary matter out there, compared with what we have observed so far.

Two separate teams found the missing matter - made of particles called baryons rather than dark matter - linking galaxies together through filaments of hot, diffuse gas.

“The missing baryon problem is solved,” says Hideki Tanimura at the Institute of Space Astrophysics in Orsay, France, leader of one of the groups. The other team was led by Anna de Graaff at the University of Edinburgh, UK.

GOPers continue attacking Clinton for her ties to accused sex predator Weinstein, while the GOP continues to rally around admitted sex predator they elected to WH, Donald Trump.

That’s entirely expected.

What isn’t expected is that Trump called for a massive expansion of the US nuclear weapons stockpile. He’s calling for a 10x increase.

To put that into perspective, it would cost more than $1.4 trillion just to maintain and modernize the existing stockpile over the next couple of decades.

Trump wants to essentially abrogate existing nuclear weapons treaties (START, SALT, and their follow on agreements) so we can do what exactly?

We’re supposedly going to find trillions of dollars to spend on nukes when we can’t find a few billion (pocket change in comparison) to help Puerto Rico get its grid rebuilt and help millions of Americans in need now.

Trump wants an earth shattering kaboom. He’s been fixated on it since before he ran for office, and it was one of the first things he asked upon beginning to receive briefings as a nominee. The man is completely deranged and delusional, and still more evidence is that there’s apparently a plan for top advisers to tackle Trump should he go for the nuclear football.

Trump must be removed from office, but that’s still entirely in the hands of a feckless and craven GOP that is fully compromised because they’ve enabled Trump all along. Even if we just stick to the issue of nuclear weapons, Trump’s fascination and intent to try and use them shows a reckless disregard for human life.

But we can’t just narrow Trump’s mental health mess to nuclear weapons. There’s his lack of empathy towards others, his constant attacks on people he considers enemies because they don’t agree with him (even when Trump is factually wrong). No one around Trump seems willing or able to correct Trump (surrounded by yes men as advisers), and he doesn’t seem grounded in reality on anything he tweets or speaks of.

There’s a cult of personality he’s created within the GOP, and the GOP wont act because their core support believes Trump over them. He’s coopted the GOP’s own refusal to accept facts and reality and now the GOP is endangering the nation and the world.

The GOP is compromised and has undermined US national security with each passing day, so any GOPer who wants to talk about national security should start with their oath of office and resign for failure to uphold and defend the Constitution and the nation from threats foreign and domestic.

Turns out that Trump is both - a threat foreign and domestic.

But don’t take my word on Trump’s insane nuclear weapons plan… let’s go to the experts:

Morning.

I decided to watch Morning Joke a bit this morning. He sometimes has some good reporting on what is up with Trump even though Joke and Mika make me cringe. I’m sort of glad I tuned in and I am sort of frightened by some of the reports.

Here are two. The first one terrified me. The second was somewhat scary but it helps give some back story as to what caused Tillerson to call Donny a moron. There is some overlap in what they are talking about. Drag the first video to about 5:00, that is where it gets terrifying.

He is a fucking moron. Joke points out how stupid Trump’s team is about history and their literally thinking history starts January 20th 2017…with Trump and company.

These reports need to be seen by everyone in America to understand the real danger the Orange Water Buffalo is to the U.S. and the world.

Joel Osteen aggravates me to no end. My wife, when we first starting dating, had a few of his books around. We talked about it and I found out my wife is not religious (agnostic - I’m an atheist) but she just likes the books as self-help/reflective books that help her think things through. I said that’s fine - but no more Joel Osteen (I then bought her my version of a self help book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, which I recommend.

Jimmy Carter is a deeply religious and faithful man, far more so than Ronald Reagan was.

While I do not have doubts over what Mitt Romney claims to believe or the depth of his own faith, most Evangelicals despise Mormonism. However, they set aside their despite of Mormonism over the deeply faithful Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton is also a deeply religious and faithful woman, far more than Donald Trump and his Two Corinthians are.

As of Monday the Mrs. was at 1.5 cm dilated. My money is on Friday the 13th (upon which my grandmother and grandfather won’t come near the kid as they are completely superstitious). Which is fine - they are in their mid 80s and not certain they can be trusted to hold onto anything (including sanity) at this point.

That’s entirely expected.

What isn’t expected is that Trump called for a massive expansion of the US nuclear weapons stockpile. He’s calling for a 10x increase.

To put that into perspective, it would cost more than $1.4 trillion just to maintain and modernize the existing stockpile over the next couple of decades.

Trump wants to essentially abrogate existing nuclear weapons treaties (START, SALT, and their follow on agreements) so we can do what exactly?

We’re supposedly going to find trillions of dollars to spend on nukes when we can’t find a few billion (pocket change in comparison) to help Puerto Rico get its grid rebuilt and help millions of Americans in need now.

Trump wants an earth shattering kaboom. He’s been fixated on it since before he ran for office, and it was one of the first things he asked upon beginning to receive briefings as a nominee. The man is completely deranged and delusional, and still more evidence is that there’s apparently a plan for top advisers to tackle Trump should he go for the nuclear football.

Trump must be removed from office, but that’s still entirely in the hands of a feckless and craven GOP that is fully compromised because they’ve enabled Trump all along. Even if we just stick to the issue of nuclear weapons, Trump’s fascination and intent to try and use them shows a reckless disregard for human life.

But we can’t just narrow Trump’s mental health mess to nuclear weapons. There’s his lack of empathy towards others, his constant attacks on people he considers enemies because they don’t agree with him (even when Trump is factually wrong). No one around Trump seems willing or able to correct Trump (surrounded by yes men as advisers), and he doesn’t seem grounded in reality on anything he tweets or speaks of.

There’s a cult of personality he’s created within the GOP, and the GOP wont act because their core support believes Trump over them. He’s coopted the GOP’s own refusal to accept facts and reality and now the GOP is endangering the nation and the world.

The GOP is compromised and has undermined US national security with each passing day, so any GOPer who wants to talk about national security should start with their oath of office and resign for failure to uphold and defend the Constitution and the nation from threats foreign and domestic.

Turns out that Trump is both - a threat foreign and domestic.

But don’t take my word on Trump’s insane nuclear weapons plan… let’s go to the experts:

If you see the flags at half-staff, either the President or your state governor or other local official issued a proclamation. It’s also amazing when you compare it to the total number of US murders in 2016 of 15,696. There are fewer than 1 million officers with arresting authority in the US. If the general adult population killed at the same rate as police officers we’d have 200K+ murders in the US.

Or we can compare it to the deaths of officers. 141 officers died in the line of duty in 2015, 58 intentionally by a civilian, the rest from accidents, illness and disease). That means that an officer was 20 times more likely to kill than be killed by a civilian. Interactions between the public and police are far more dangerous for the public than the officer.

None of my grandmothers were alive when I was born. They both passed with health issues that were not treatable back before WW2. I was a late arrival in a family that was late as my parents were fairly elderly when married. Both my grandfathers had died by the time I was 10.

My father retired they same year I graduated high school…that is how late I arrived (surprise!) fully 8 years behind my next youngest brother. In a way, I was a single child due to the fact brothers don’t hang around much with a baby when they are 8, 10 and 14.

Being a kid with elderly parents presented some issues for me as I didn’t see a lot of emotional love from them…and I do believe it affected my view on relationships. Personally I would not recommend parents having kids that late.

Because the left doesn’t have essential outright ownership of one of the news channels the way the GOP does with Fox, and the other aspects of the media have long since bent over backwards to believe everything bad about a Dem while ignoring anything bad about GOPers until it becomes too big to ignore…at which point they immediately find something bad about Dems to pull a ‘pox upon both houses’, ‘both sides same thing’ bullshit to absolve the GOP of any blame.

We have no real megaphone, no matter how hard we try. That’s how they manage to do it, concerted, long-term erasure. And it’s effective and almost nigh-impossible to fight at this rate it seems.

Stephanie Ruhle can sometimes be too much of a booster for big business, but she’s tough and fair as a journalist. I’m glad to see her stand up to the Big Orange Yam (B.O.Y.) in such a public way. Business people watch MSNBC business coverage and they know Ruhle from her days at Bloomberg. They trust her more than they trust Trump, I’m sure, and I bet B.O.Y knows that. His fragile ego is on the line here.

He can write a letter of complaint about the specific station over which he has a complaint to the station (which is required to keep it on file), or to the FCC.

As for cable stations, they are not licensed by the FCC either.

He really doesn’t understand how any of this works, does he?

The broadcast networks do own some television stations they would need licenses for, so Trump’s threat is real.

Based on the original canon, the answer would be no, for a variety of sci-fi pseudo-babble reason. Now that Archmagos Cawl has come forward and revealed he has spent the last 10k refining and tinkering with geneseed, I can see no reason why they couldn’t make that change.

GW has also released statements stating they’re planning on including more female models into their ranges. I believe they stated they’re going to release female Imperial guard units (No “boob” plates, actual military gear), and we’re got the perennial rumors of plastic Sisters of Battle being just around the corner. Personally, I would love to pick up a squad or two so I could mod them into Wolf Sisters for an Inquisitor’s warband.

Thanks. I don’t have any desire to smoke again at this point, but I once quit for two years when I was younger, then stupidly started up again so I know how easy it is to pick it up again.

I don’t think anyone has to worry about that anytime soon; the BSA is much more conservative and church-backed than the GSA, so I see this as National’s way of boosting the membership in areas where the GSA is seen as too “liberal”.

Still though, it’s a step in the right direction, but the matter of allowing gay adults in Scouting leadership (with no strings attached) still needs to be addressed.

To expand, it’s either time to go all-in on association football by the name of ‘football’ or grant that everyone over the past 50 years who kept telling us that soccer was always going to be the sport of the future and literally never the present, were right.

Either we get people to accept football for itself, or we start admitting that it’s like baseball for a subcontinent-variety Indian and always will be.

I know which one I hope for; I also have a feeling I know which one the US will choose should it even remain united (and I have my suspicions that there were issues of Trumpist-vs-sane-person in that locker room that might also have contributed, but then we all know my views on trying to rebuild bridges with the Confeds these days). And I don’t think they’re the same choice.

St. Paul is in the process of building a tax-exempt major league soccer stadium in one of the most congested traffic exchanges in the Twin Cities. The neighborhood still has a large residential component and I feel sorry for them. I’m really glad that our mayor Chris Coleman (no relation to Norm) is retiring because I’ve really hated all of the inappropriately overscaled development that he’s been gung-ho for during his terms. He’s running for governor now and I hope it ends his political career.
