There’s something so cool about the total lack of pretension or artifice in this song and video. It’s not possible to be in a bad mood after watching.

Lyrics
You won’t believe what I coulda told ya
But I don’t believe I’ve the balls to let you know
I can say that ‘cause I’m a man
But I feel like a little boy… today

I cherish my intercontinental friendships
We talk it over continental breakfast
In a hotel in east bumble-wherever
Somewhere on the sphere, around here

I cherish my intercontinental friendships
Not much very big on enemies
So I kick a can way up into the sun, man
But it falls down into a ravine
I don’t mean to even think about it that way, but I do

Watchin’ the waves come in at night
From my back porch stoop, porch swing swingin’on its own
See it’s just an inhabitant of some holy ghost

I walk like a bruised ego along shorefront property un-owned to me
But I’m feelin’ inferior on the interior don’t ya see Guarded and sentimental (and after all, its just a rental)
(Like better luck performin’ telekinesis on a priestess)
You won’t believe what I mighta, coulda told ya
But I wouldn’t wanna leave ya trippin’ out over it
OK, more-so me, but…
(or just me)

I have a friend in Chicago that gleefully chimes in and makes fun of shitheads on Facebook. Well, I’m scrolling through and my buddy commented on some dude’s desire to shoot as many Antifa as he could. This is when I found out that Facebook has no reporting mechanism for fucked up comments like Twitter has for fucked up tweets.

I would totally shut down my Facebook if it weren’t for me being an established social media presence there, with family and friend connections all over the world.

Facebook is a fucking cesspool.

Facebook could care less about offensive posts. Look how many times Rage Furby has been suspended and re-enabled.

I use FB because it’s the best way to keep up with family and friends. But my visits to it are usually spoiled by running across some painfully stupid shit that makes me want to throw something at the screen.

I can’t, because it’s my son’s screen and he’d be mad if I broke it.

I limit my escapism to reading fiction and watching TV shows with superheroes in them. Some people can’t seem to distinguish fact from fiction.

I mean, 58 people died in LV. Their photos were on CNN and in the papers. They are dead. Suggesting it’s all faked just make my blood boil.

And coming from a born-again makes me even madder.

Local creationist:

‘I Take the Bible at Its Word,’ Says La Mesa’s New School Board Member

[…]

But in reply to a question on the age of the earth — 4.5 billion years or 6,000 years? — she said “so many theories [exist] on how old the earth is and how it came about.”

She got the job on the board when another board member resigned. I guess the next election the seat will have to be competed (I hope.)

Anyway, she tries the soft-sell:

“Say if a parent were asking me this question,” she said. “I would tell them what I believe is that their children are being taught what’s given to us about the earth and how old it is through the Common Core. So my own personal beliefs don’t really play into this right now.”

What if a parent asked for “intelligent design” to be taught in one of the East County district’s 17 elementary schools, traditional middle school or three specialized Grade 4-8 academies?

[…]

“All of what our teachers teach in our schools is given directly from the state government,” she said. […]

[…]

Basically she knows she has no other choice than to say “the state makes us do this”. La Mesa is not an especially wingnutty part of the county. If she was running out in Spring Valley then maybe she could be more overt.

But this again shows that it is really up to the community to be what it needs to be. If the State was not so clear about what science standards have to be, then we would be facing creationists at every turn. So all that work to make sure California politics is influenced by progressive, and secular, ideas does really pay off.

Yeah, I don’t even think it was 12 hours before that shit started.

I had to have my car towed Thursday. The tow truck driver thinks that the shooter was a patsy (swear to God, he used that exact word); but wants a strict national background check, so he can have the exact same weapons the military has, so he can fight back if the gubmint turns on us.

Unanswered questions:

1) The shooter was a patsy of who, exactly? Strict gun control is the last thing on the current government’s mind. It makes no sense that he was set up by them.

If he was set up by anti-gun people, what would be the end game there? 20 dead 1st graders didn’t convince the GOP to enact tougher gun laws. 59 adult CW fans certainly won’t.

2) He honestly thinks he and his buddies are going to turn back our highly trained military (whose members he probably thanks for their service every time he sees them) because Red Dawn is a documentary.

3) You want the government to make weapons as difficult as possible to get, yet are constantly worried they’re going to on you?

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Szechuan (nowadays more often rendered Sichuan) is the first Chinese cuisine I attempted. I’ve got only a few recipes really down pat…and none of the elegant ones, but man do I love it. But I can’t do the chile heat and Sichuan peppercorn sting the way the locals do. I know it’s a total waste of brain power, but I find myself considering the whole “Szechuan sauce” thing just because it’s like a culinary brain teaser…what would I put together and slap that label on?

Mom would then open a can of La Choy Chow Mein noodles and we’d dig in. Then Mom and Dad heard of the Bellevue Tea Garden. The thing that pisses me off about biblical literalists is they’re as pick and choose as the liberal Christians they hate for doing that. Some of the biggest born again dicks I’ve seen are multiple times divorced people and I just want to scream at them who the hell are they to judge a gay couple that’s been together decades but is only now able to gain official recongition. Sichuan is to die for. They tone the spice down for Americans, and usually the American menus have warnings for the really spicy ones, like good Mexican places do. Unlike Hunan cuisine, which uses hot peppers to the point you can’t taste anything but, Sichuan has a more balanced taste, IMO.

Sichuan pepper are little seeds that aren’t capsaicin peppers at all. If you don’t like the numbing effect, you can pick them out. Chopsticks are handy for that.

But if some redneck bully I knew goes to the trouble to see through my ruse and ask to be friends, I’ll accept. Sichuan cuisine uses tons of chiles in multiple forms—fermented paste, dried, fresh, seasoned oil, salted—but what really sets it apart is huaijiao—lit. flower pepper, otherwise Sichuan pepper.

The latter has a chemical that activates several different receptor types in your tactile sense, producing an sensory effect somewhere between a tiny shock and a sting.

That’s not all they have going on, but it’s definitely the most memorable.

57

Plant evolution is very difficult to understand, because soft tissues do not readily create fossils, and because plants are freer to do weird things with DNA than animals do.

The Rutaceae, like several plant families, are found globally. Which means they really get their seeds around, or their common origin is long ago.

Long time ago, when I was in school, it was not clear when flowering plants first appeared. Then the idea was that Magnolias are the oldest extant form of flowers. Now I think the idea is that flowering plants are much older.

Some people hate the sensation. I love it. Sichuan hotpot uses it a lot.

Central. Most provinces in China rely on pork, chicken, duck, fish and tofu for protein. Muslims obviously replace the pork with lamb and to a lesser extent beef.

“Dozens of scientists and engineers at a national nuclear weapons laboratory in New Mexico are objecting to public school science standards proposed by the state that they say would undermine the study of climate change, evolution and earth sciences.”

I think it’s a d*mn shame that some of the same people who want science turned into creationism also think that their kids will be well-equipped to have successful careers in science-related fields. Kids that learn creationism as science can probably get into college after high school, but they’ll find themselves having to play catch-up a few seconds after they enter their college biology and/or physics classroom and look at the syllabuses for those classes.

I’ve actually known kids who transferred from private Christian schools to the public high school where I taught, and many of them struggled to learn the 10th Grade physical science they should have learned in 8th Grade. These would often be kids who were accustomed to making a grade of 90 and above in science classes. I have nothing against parochial schools, but I think those that substitute creationism for science do a disservice to their students. My beautician’s grandson attends a Christian elementary school. I’ve seen some of his assignments, and almost all of them have some reference to God or the Bible. He attended a Christian school until the Third Grade. When that school closed, he attended a public elementary school for one year and struggled academically. The following year, he was back in a Christian school and according to her, he’s “excelling.” SMDH.

It really is. We read a great book called women in the Chinese Enlightenment and it covered a few women, all of whom lived well into their 90’s experiences of the 20th century. You had one who was part of the KNT, another who was CCP. Amazing lives they lived. Agree about Sun too. I’d love to learn more about him and his ideas.

There was a really good Sichuan place up in Camas, WA of all places. And like you said, they had the warnings for the really spicy dishes, which they billed as “authentic” Sichuan cuisine. I tried that one time. Remember that scene in Terminator 2?…..the nuke scene? Yeah, that’s pretty much what the inside of my mouth felt like.

On CNN’s front page was “The Silence of Clinton and Obama on Weinstein” by Chris Cillizza.

Make no mistake, this is no “analysis” as he has it labeled. And the thing you need to realize is Cillizza KNOWS that Clinton doesn’t support rape and sexual assault, he just wants make her respond. It’s him using his forum to make her jump- he might as well be saying “Dance, mad bitch, dance,” because we all know that if she does respond, Cillizza’s next piece will be “what took her so long” and “was she sincere” and so on.

The part that was wrong? Cillizza didn’t write a second piece, he only changed the headline of the original piece to “It Only Took Five Days for Hillary Clinton to Issue This Statement about Harvey Weinstein,” (adding Hillary Clinton’s condemnation)

A Bernie Sanders Supporter Is Trying To Turn Nebraska Purple

State party chair Jane Kleeb thinks Democrats need to pay more attention to rural voters.

(Goes to Huffington Post)

They mostly put “Bernie Sanders” in the title (based on the way I read the article) to note Jane Kleeb supported Sanders in the primary, and to generate clicks.

The article goes on to say how Sanders support of Heath Mello for Omaha mayor likely hurt his chances.

The article talks about how Mrs. Kleeb is trying to rebuild what was nearly a defunct party in this state, and flip the state to purple.

Overall, the article is pretty good. Of note, the article points out the Democratic Party in Nebraska does not pay the state party chair anything, meaning all her work is for free and she must maintain her regular work in addition to running the state party.

The first thing you have to do, Kleeb said, “is you just have to show up.”

Visibility is a theme Kleeb keeps coming back to ― whether its a booth at the state fair, a pamphlet-wielding volunteer at a livestock auction house, or on the ballot. It represents an improvement over the status quo for the state’s Democrats, who have been defined by low morale after years of neglect from the national party.

“I can’t expect a voter to all of a sudden ― if they’re an independent or even a moderate Republican ― to vote for Democrats if they never see us on the issues that they care about,” Kleeb said.

In this context, refurbishing the office feels like a tastefully bedecked war cry: a rebuttal to the naysayers that even in blood-red Nebraska, there is a Democratic Party, a party with history, one that stands for something, and ― this is the part Kleeb really wants to drive home ― one that’s actually trying.

Democratic pundits in the article note it would be impossible to elect a Democrat to a rural seat in Nebraska, because the Democratic strategists believe that Nebraskans see Democrats as liberal coastal elites (cough cough, they didn’t talk to me, vice-mayor cough cough).

Mrs. Kleeb noted when she took over the state office after winning the seat of party chair, she noted it was held together by “duct tape and beer cans,” saying the national party is uninterested in rural voters.

She brings to the table her organising skills as the leader of Bold Nebraska. The organisation wedded conservative ranchers (she is a rancher herself but not conservative), hunters, conservationists, ecologists, Native American tribes, landowners, &c to successfully fight off the Keystone XL Pipeline in the state courts (Nebraska is still the only state standing in the way of that).

” WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said he wanted what amounted to a nearly tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal during a gathering this past summer of the nation’s highest ranking national security leaders, according to three officials who were in the room.

Trump’s comments, the officials said, came in response to a briefing slide he was shown that charted the steady reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons since the late 1960s. Trump indicated he wanted a bigger stockpile, not the bottom position on that downward-sloping curve.

According to the officials present, Trump’s advisers, among them the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, were surprised. Officials briefly explained the legal and practical impediments to a nuclear buildup and how the current military posture is stronger than it was at the height of the build-up. In interviews, they told NBC News that no such expansion is planned. …”

The missing links between galaxies have finally been found. This is the first detection of the roughly half of the normal matter in our universe - protons, neutrons and electrons - unaccounted for by previous observations of stars, galaxies and other bright objects in space.

You have probably heard about the hunt for dark matter, a mysterious substance thought to permeate the universe, the effects of which we can see through its gravitational pull. But our models of the universe also say there should be about twice as much ordinary matter out there, compared with what we have observed so far.

Two separate teams found the missing matter - made of particles called baryons rather than dark matter - linking galaxies together through filaments of hot, diffuse gas.

“The missing baryon problem is solved,” says Hideki Tanimura at the Institute of Space Astrophysics in Orsay, France, leader of one of the groups. The other team was led by Anna de Graaff at the University of Edinburgh, UK.

More on how the two groups made this discovery can be found at newscientist.com

Well, this is anything but comforting.

State law prohibits custody or parenting time for parents of a child conceived through sexual assault or sexual abuse, according to Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons, who authored the 2016 legislation when she served as a lawmaker in the Michigan Legislature.

“This is exactly why I introduced and fought for the (law),” Posthumus Lyons said. “What I didn’t anticipate is a judge who at best is unaware of Michigan law, or at worst places rapists above victims.”

Yockey said Tuesday she doesn’t know if Ross or prosecutors were aware of Mirasolo’s convictions.

Detroit-area divorce lawyer Robert Cassar said the order granting joint legal custody to Mirasolo could have been an example of such orders being “rubber stamped” because judges and prosecutors “do so many.”

Apparently not. When you need legislation to deal with common sense issues, it’s anything but a no-brainer.

This is the kind of thing that comes from people like Aiken who talk about Legitimate Rape and have no idea of basic biology.

When I told my husband this story, he first said “well, they obviously had a relationship prior to the child being born” at which point I said that she was 12 when she conceived. He was like…Oh. Nope. WTF?! which is what anyone with a fucking drop of common sense would think. So this is just another breakdown of women having any rights or control of their own lives.

re: #132 FormerDirtDart

yeah, while the “joint legal custody” doesn’t didn’t grant physical custody or even visitation, the notion of that animal having even the slightest decision making authority in the child’s life is sickening.

Where rapists can get custody or visitation rights:
cnn.com

No law prohibiting rapists seeking custody or child visitation:
MN, ND, WY, MS, AL

New laws blocking parental rights (as of 2016):
AZ, IA, MI, IN, GA, CT, ME

Rest of states require a conviction to block parental rights.

Forty-three other states and the District of Columbia have legislation that offers at least some protection to prevent rape victims from facing their attackers over parental rights; eight of those laws were just adopted in 2016.

But these legislative protections vary greatly. In 20 states and D.C., a rape conviction is required before a victim can request termination of parental rights.

My state’s law (NE) reads:

An individual who’s convicted of sexual assault in this state may [italics mine] lose parental rights to any child conceived during the attack.

Each of the states’ laws are in the article. Most states do not protect women from facing custody or visitation battles.

(rest cut)

And there is another problem you didn’t bring up your husband noted but apparently didn’t think through:

Having a relationship in no way has any bearing on sexual assault or rape. It doesn’t matter if the woman was married to the man for twenty years, sexual assault or rape are still unjustified (but sadly allowed in some states).

Part of it is that the word “rape” is a very loaded term.

Legally it simply means sex without consent: whether that was through force or threats of force, intimidation, coercion, or whether the partner was not of legal age or compos mentis enough to grant consent, is a matter to be judged in individual cases.

I don’t know, it doesn’t seem loaded to me.

Legally it simply means sex without consent

Yup, no consent, it’s rape.

The tough part is getting a conviction - all it takes is one juror to think “well, I don’t know, she’s been his wife for twenty years, can it really be rape?” and the case goes out the window.

While it is a defence attorney’s job to make the best case for his or her client, that’s why they play on every conservative idea about rape to cast doubt: She was dressed like a slut, she had a lot of sex partners, she was drunk, he was drunk, she said no but did she really mean it …

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

GOPers continue attacking Clinton for her ties to accused sex predator Weinstein, while the GOP continues to rally around admitted sex predator they elected to WH, Donald Trump.

That’s entirely expected.

What isn’t expected is that Trump called for a massive expansion of the US nuclear weapons stockpile. He’s calling for a 10x increase.

To put that into perspective, it would cost more than $1.4 trillion just to maintain and modernize the existing stockpile over the next couple of decades.

Trump wants to essentially abrogate existing nuclear weapons treaties (START, SALT, and their follow on agreements) so we can do what exactly?

We’re supposedly going to find trillions of dollars to spend on nukes when we can’t find a few billion (pocket change in comparison) to help Puerto Rico get its grid rebuilt and help millions of Americans in need now.

Trump wants an earth shattering kaboom. He’s been fixated on it since before he ran for office, and it was one of the first things he asked upon beginning to receive briefings as a nominee. The man is completely deranged and delusional, and still more evidence is that there’s apparently a plan for top advisers to tackle Trump should he go for the nuclear football.

Trump must be removed from office, but that’s still entirely in the hands of a feckless and craven GOP that is fully compromised because they’ve enabled Trump all along. Even if we just stick to the issue of nuclear weapons, Trump’s fascination and intent to try and use them shows a reckless disregard for human life.

But we can’t just narrow Trump’s mental health mess to nuclear weapons. There’s his lack of empathy towards others, his constant attacks on people he considers enemies because they don’t agree with him (even when Trump is factually wrong). No one around Trump seems willing or able to correct Trump (surrounded by yes men as advisers), and he doesn’t seem grounded in reality on anything he tweets or speaks of.

There’s a cult of personality he’s created within the GOP, and the GOP wont act because their core support believes Trump over them. He’s coopted the GOP’s own refusal to accept facts and reality and now the GOP is endangering the nation and the world.

The GOP is compromised and has undermined US national security with each passing day, so any GOPer who wants to talk about national security should start with their oath of office and resign for failure to uphold and defend the Constitution and the nation from threats foreign and domestic.

Turns out that Trump is both - a threat foreign and domestic.

But don’t take my word on Trump’s insane nuclear weapons plan… let’s go to the experts:

I decided to watch Morning Joke a bit this morning. He sometimes has some good reporting on what is up with Trump even though Joke and Mika make me cringe. I’m sort of glad I tuned in and I am sort of frightened by some of the reports.

Here are two. The first one terrified me. The second was somewhat scary but it helps give some back story as to what caused Tillerson to call Donny a moron. There is some overlap in what they are talking about. Drag the first video to about 5:00, that is where it gets terrifying.

He is a fucking moron. Joke points out how stupid Trump’s team is about history and their literally thinking history starts January 20th 2017…with Trump and company.

These reports need to be seen by everyone in America to understand the real danger the Orange Water Buffalo is to the U.S. and the world.

As I am not religious, I don’t worship things like icons.

My understanding of most Christian denominations is that idol or icon worship is prohibited. (Wouldn’t that definition include flags?)

There’s a Christian flag with its own pledge of allegiance attached to it. Most Christians in this country don’t seem to take any of that “no idolatry” stuff seriously at all.

How does this not conflict with the 1st Amendment? His Twitter account is basically evidence of the administration/government breaking the 1st Amendment by putting pressure on media and other corporations who in turn take actions against people this administration does not like. If still have an impartial judicial branch I would like to see how this would shake out.

This administration believes the Constitution DOESN’T APPLY to them and therefore cannot and will not abide by it. It’s that simple.

Happy, I remember 1980 all too well when my “born again” insane aunt who voted for Carter in 1976 abandoned him for Reagan because she believed Old Fart Falwell’s lies that Carter was implementing affirmative action for gays and lesbians…

It’s insane isn’t it? I was always proud that my parents and grandparents all saw through Reagan. I still remember how my mom’s dad liked to joke that he wasn’t even that good of an actor. Wouldn’t know heh haven’t seen his films.

Joel Osteen aggravates me to no end. My wife, when we first starting dating, had a few of his books around. We talked about it and I found out my wife is not religious (agnostic - I’m an atheist) but she just likes the books as self-help/reflective books that help her think things through. I said that’s fine - but no more Joel Osteen (I then bought her my version of a self help book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, which I recommend.

He’s a sick con man.

Maybe Putin turns on Trump and gives up everything they did in the elections just to help get him out.

I’m sure it feels like deja vu for you seeing the same people that embraced Hollywood Reagan over the Sunday School Teacher Carter embracing Trump as this religious hero. That just to me shows how the religious right are some of the most gullible and bigoted godamned fools out there.

That’s because it’s not really about religion. It’s about political power. They are lying and saying it’s about religion. or they are deluded about why they are voting as they do, or they have been manipulated by cynical pundits and politicians to believe they are voting for the correct Christian choice (we’ll skip the idea that should have no bearing on politics for the moment).

Jimmy Carter is a deeply religious and faithful man, far more so than Ronald Reagan was.

While I do not have doubts over what Mitt Romney claims to believe or the depth of his own faith, most Evangelicals despise Mormonism. However, they set aside their despite of Mormonism over the deeply faithful Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton is also a deeply religious and faithful woman, far more than Donald Trump and his Two Corinthians are.

Nowhere is this more difficult than in the realm of political advertising and the highly charged issues that are often addressed therein. After further review, we have made the decision to allow the content in question from Rep. Blackburn’s campaign ad to be promoted on our ads platform.

“While we initially determined that a small portion of the video used potentially inflammatory language, after reconsidering the ad in the context of the entire message, we believe that there is room to refine our policies around these issues.”

Trump doesn’t have that authority. He has the exact same authority of any other citizen on the issue of the public service of television stations (networks don’t have licences):

He can write a letter of complaint about the specific station over which he has a complaint to the station (which is required to keep it on file), or to the FCC.

As for cable stations, they are not licensed by the FCC either.

He really doesn’t understand how any of this works, does he?

Nope. But you also have to remember, that the individual (Ajit V. Pai) he put in charge of the FCC is also working to kill net neutrality. I wouldn’t put it past him or this administration to attempt to pass some rule prohibiting negative reporting of same.

Prohibiting negative reporting on Donald Trump would be a violation of the I Amendment’s speech and press clauses.

If the FCC was to go there, it would be instant lawsuits against the FCC for violations of Constitutional rights from just about every civil libertarian group (and political party) in the nation.

The logical extension of “you can’t say anything about me” is “your political party can’t say anything about me,” “your Website can’t say anything about me,” “your newspaper can’t say anything about me.”

If such a monstrous regulation was somehow promulgated and upheld, that would be the end of Constitutional rule in the country.

For good reason too, as there have been precious few people who have actually bothered to ensure the rules apply to them, even informally, and in fact tend to go out of their way to try and normalize or make ends around the rules for this administration so they can get their way.

re: #291 calochortus

Totally OT, but I promised pics of my new handwoven curtains for the weaving “studio” (a.k.a. daughter’s old bedroom.) Since I kept forgetting to take pictures at night when the light from the window didn’t overwhelm everything else, I’m only now posting photos. Of course, with the artificial light, the color is a bit distorted, they’re white.

For those interested, they are an 8 shaft huck lace,. Cotton warp, linen weft.
There’s another pair on a smaller window, but they’re the same-and hard to take a photo because they’re behind a loom.

My wife just took a look at your photos of your handiwork. She says the curtains are exquisite, but making cloth on a loom is way too much work for her. (She’ll do it after the collapse of industrial civilisation, but not otherwise.)

She says she’ll stick to making pencil-pleat drapes with cloth already manufactured.

I recall the explosion of derp on the right when Obama commented on FOX News Channel being opposed to him. There is text of that interview from 2009 available:

nytimes.com

Newsweek has a comparison of Obama then and Trump now, pointing out that Trump is far out of bounds from what any president has done before. Presidents have had fraught relationships with the media in the past, or attacked specific reporting as untrue or distorted, but Trump (as we know) thinks the whole news media is biased against him.

We have Nixon and Reagan to thank for dumbing down conservatives on everything from news to civics.

It was Roger Ailes when he was an advisor to Richard Nixon working out the problems of a GOP TV. FCC rules would not permit it (Fairness Doctrine) and cable was in its infancy with no networks outside the broadcast ones.

Ronald Reagan’s administration ditched the Fairness Doctrine during the rise of cable service, and Rupert Murdoch, with Ailes at the helm, launched FOX News Channel on the ashes of the defunct DuMont Network (Metromedia).

Ronald Reagan’s administration ditched the Fairness Doctrine during the rise of cable service, and Rupert Murdoch, with Ailes at the helm, launched FOX News Channel on the ashes of the defunct DuMont Network (Metromedia).

yep yep yep. Nixon, Reagan, Bush the Lesser, and Trump - 4 worst modern presidents.

But don’t take my word on Trump’s insane nuclear weapons plan… let’s go to the experts:

why its hard to change minds
why reason, rationality, “proof” ten times over don’t matter

the sociology of belief

it’s mostly about religion, atheism etc. and then this pops up in the middle:

I recall an article a few months back wondering aloud why Trump supporters seem convinced of everything the man ever says even after showing them he contradicts his own positions three times in a single week. They will defend anything he says or does, not because the actions or words themselves are rationally defensible, but because at some point the mantle for a particular group identity was placed on him and from that point forward it became about the tribal identity, not the man himself.

There are no more half-staff days in either public law or the US Flag Code for the rest of the year.

If you see the flags at half-staff, either the President or your state governor or other local official issued a proclamation. (Local officials can issue half-staff notices under limited conditions: I have done one, after our decades-long serving village clerk died. Before I issued the proclamation I got permission from the state governor’s office first, and he issued a statewide proclamation and gave me permission to issue a half-staff notice for the village.)

Harvard Study Shows Actual Number of People Killed by U.S. Police

In a revelatory new study published Tuesday, Harvard public health researchers report that in 2015, a total of 1,166 people were killed by police in the United States. What’s staggering about this research is not just the massive number of police killings it reports — and knowing that many of those police aren’t disciplined, — but the fact that scientists were able to conduct the study at all. Historically, the U.S. government has been unable to provide a full count of people killed by police that has the confidence of federal statisticians.

It’s also amazing when you compare it to the total number of US murders in 2016 of 15,696. There are fewer than 1 million officers with arresting authority in the US. If the general adult population killed at the same rate as police officers we’d have 200K+ murders in the US.

Or we can compare it to the deaths of officers. 141 officers died in the line of duty in 2015, 58 intentionally by a civilian, the rest from accidents, illness and disease). That means that an officer was 20 times more likely to kill than be killed by a civilian. Interactions between the public and police are far more dangerous for the public than the officer.

Monica Lewinsky is debuting an anti-bullying public service announcement advert (since Melania Trump doesn’t seem to be up to the task yet).

people.com

(The advert is included in the article, more at the link)

As for the new PSA, she says, “We hired actors to reenact hateful cyberbullying posts that had been made on social media. We took those actors into public spaces. They engaged in these conversations almost as an improv, using the language which we had found online. And the footage captures people who had no idea that they were actors, then stepping in and standing up for people.”

“The people in the video who overhear the comments were not actors,” explains Lewinsky, 44. “They were not aware the actors were reading real social media posts. Their reactions and actions were real. It was heartening to see real New Yorkers stand up for people. I especially loved that most intervened without bullying the bully, but instead standing up for the targets.”

As for how her own past played a role in its tone, she says, “I think that there are are probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of horrible things, which have been said about me online and in print. But I can count on one, maybe two hands, how many times people have been rude to my face. That’s my own personal connection. When you are with someone, when you see someone face to face, you are reminded of their humanity.”

Some time ago, Monica Lewinsky noted in a Ted talk that she was possibly the first person to lose her reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.

Two of my great grandmothers lived well into my adulthood (24 and 36) and one great-great grandmother lived until I was eighteen.

I have two five generation photographs with me in them (one when I was an infant, one when my son was an infant).

That won’t happen any more in my family though: My son wasn’t born until I was twenty-eight, he has no children, and my sister has no children.

None of my grandmothers were alive when I was born. They both passed with health issues that were not treatable back before WW2. I was a late arrival in a family that was late as my parents were fairly elderly when married. Both my grandfathers had died by the time I was 10.

My father retired they same year I graduated high school…that is how late I arrived (surprise!) fully 8 years behind my next youngest brother. In a way, I was a single child due to the fact brothers don’t hang around much with a baby when they are 8, 10 and 14.

Being a kid with elderly parents presented some issues for me as I didn’t see a lot of emotional love from them…and I do believe it affected my view on relationships. Personally I would not recommend parents having kids that late.

It really shouldn’t surprise anyone. The media has scrambled for weeks to find something, anything, to get the public’s attention off Trump and just how much of a royal fuck-up he is. So now they settle for their tried-and-true method: “Moral outrage.” That Weinstein is connected to Democrats also checks the “BOTH SIDES!!!” box as well. And that he was in some way connected to Hillary means they hit their trifecta.

Because the left doesn’t have essential outright ownership of one of the news channels the way the GOP does with Fox, and the other aspects of the media have long since bent over backwards to believe everything bad about a Dem while ignoring anything bad about GOPers until it becomes too big to ignore…at which point they immediately find something bad about Dems to pull a ‘pox upon both houses’, ‘both sides same thing’ bullshit to absolve the GOP of any blame.

We have no real megaphone, no matter how hard we try. That’s how they manage to do it, concerted, long-term erasure. And it’s effective and almost nigh-impossible to fight at this rate it seems.

Business people watch MSNBC business coverage and they know Ruhle from her days at Bloomberg. They trust her more than they trust Trump, I’m sure, and I bet B.O.Y knows that. She does seem to like to take on Trump and she does destroy the thinking he is a great businessman. Therefore I like Stephanie and can forgive some of her thinking.

I made some dismissive comment about Weinstein being a terrible person. At least my friend did not comment about Hillary but instead talked about Hollywood values and complicity and the failure to expose his crimes earlier. I did not point out that Weinstein was no different from Ailes and O’Reilly but did make a very indirect allusion to Trump, at which point my friend backed off. He is a very devout Catholic so I did not want to mention the long-term issues in the Church, where priests who abused children were shunted off to other parishes and protected.

Well, maybe they recognize that she did, and this is their repeated Freudian slip, their unconscious acknowledgement that they slipped by and the need to cover it up and deflect lest someone actually peel back the curtain wholesale.

Thankfully, they don’t have to worry too much about that with how much of our media is full of enabling shitheels.

There are god knows how many Weinsteins in god knows how many other industries. It’s just that Hollywood has far more public skeletons because of the nature of celebrity, even moreso than politics. Pharmacy delivering alzheimer’s meds to congress.

Lawmakers describe the Office of the Attending Physician as a modern space much like a regular doctor’s office — though the $3.7 million budget it enjoyed for 2016 suggests a relatively well-furnished space. It’s strictly off-limits to reporters; staff there declined repeated requests for comment, and a spokesman for the House Administration Committee that helps oversee OAP declined multiple follow-up inquiries.

That’s perhaps because the office is not without controversy. Its services — and the relatively low fees that members must pay for access — were thrust into a harsh spotlight in 2009, as Congress began to debate the Affordable Care Act and as reporters began to ask how lawmakers’ own care might color their perspectives on policy. The central issue is the cost: In 2016, lawmakers paid $611 for annual membership — a fee that, unlike most health care prices, has risen much slower than inflation. In 1992, the first year the office charged a fee, it was $520.

The Office of the Attending Physician itself was formed in 1928, after three members of Congress died in their offices within months of one another — more than 50 years after Grubb’s first opened its doors.

But the pharmacy services at the Capitol may go back even further — a 1911 text on senatorial privileges describes an “assortment of drugs and viands, tonics and recuperatives” on hand and “readily accessible” for lawmakers. Back then, reportedly, senators took tablet after tablet and vial after vial of quinine, pepsin, and calomel, “endless supplies of cough drops,” and something described as “dandruff cure.”

To expand, it’s either time to go all-in on association football by the name of ‘football’ or grant that everyone over the past 50 years who kept telling us that soccer was always going to be the sport of the future and literally never the present, were right.

Either we get people to accept football for itself, or we start admitting that it’s like baseball for a subcontinent-variety Indian and always will be.

I know which one I hope for; I also have a feeling I know which one the US will choose should it even remain united (and I have my suspicions that there were issues of Trumpist-vs-sane-person in that locker room that might also have contributed, but then we all know my views on trying to rebuild bridges with the Confeds these days). Late to the party today - jumped in on work first thing, just got to listen for the second time. That freestyle’s like an interlocking puzzle, I didn’t even notice half of what he did until I checked it twice.

Kid Rock isn’t fit to shine Eminem’s shoes.

Never will be. Em is in a different galaxy.

Simply put, Kid Rock is the Ted Nugent of hip hop.

Also - today makes eight months smoke-free for me! I’m damn pleased with myself today.

re: #195 Anymouse 🌹

Trump doesn’t have that authority. He has the exact same authority of any other citizen on the issue of the public service of television stations (networks don’t have licences):

He can write a letter of complaint about the specific station over which he has a complaint to the station (which is required to keep it on file), or to the FCC.

As for cable stations, they are not licensed by the FCC either.

He really doesn’t understand how any of this works, does he?

The broadcast networks do own some television stations they would need licenses for, so Trump’s threat is real.

re: #400 I cannot.

Based on the original canon, the answer would be no, for a variety of sci-fi pseudo-babble reason. Now that Archmagos Cawl has come forward and revealed he has spent the last 10k refining and tinkering with geneseed, I can see no reason why they couldn’t make that change.

GW has also released statements stating they’re planning on including more female models into their ranges. I believe they stated they’re going to release female Imperial guard units (No “boob” plates, actual military gear), and we’re got the perennial rumors of plastic Sisters of Battle being just around the corner. Personally, I would love to pick up a squad or two so I could mod them into Wolf Sisters for an Inquisitor’s warband.

Durst is a knucklehead, but at least his band was capable of doing something original (Wes Borland is way more inventive than people give him credit for).

Rock started by stealing someone else’s shit and he’s been stealing ever since.

Thanks. I don’t have any desire to smoke again at this point, but I once quit for two years when I was younger, then stupidly started up again so I know how easy it is to pick it up again.

Hopefully my willpower has improved now that I’m an old man. :)

Borland basically strung up his own guitar/bass hybrid instrument(as in, strung up to be halfway between a proper guitar and bass guitar in string gauge and such) to play on a couple of the albums, didn’t he?

‘…Robert P. Jones, author of “The End of White Christian America,” observes, “One of the most astounding shifts in modern politics has been the utter transformation of white evangelical Protestants from being confident self-described ‘values voters,’ who measured candidates for office against a high bar of moral character, to anxious and unwavering Trump supporters who have largely dropped these standards for a candidate they believe will deliver policies that benefit them.” He explains that “white evangelicals have exchanged an ethic of principle that might hold a political leader accountable to consistent standards for a consequentialist ends-justify-the-means posture that simply stops interrogating character, the quality of leadership, or the morality of actions when it’s beneficial.”

Yes, and he also started the trend of using 7-string guitars for heavy rock (along with the guys from Korn). 7 strings used to be the province of jazz players back in the day.

I don’t think anyone has to worry about that anytime soon; the BSA is much more conservative and church-backed than the GSA, so I see this as National’s way of boosting the membership in areas where the GSA is seen as too “liberal”.

Still though, it’s a step in the right direction, but the matter of allowing gay adults in Scouting leadership (with no strings attached) still needs to be addressed.

Some time ago, Monica Lewinsky noted in a Ted talk that she was possibly the first person to lose her reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.

Warning: soccer rant.

[Embedded content]

And I don’t think they’re the same choice.

St. Paul is in the process of building a tax-exempt major league soccer stadium in one of the most congested traffic exchanges in the Twin Cities. The neighborhood still has a large residential component and I feel sorry for them. I’m really glad that our mayor Chris Coleman (no relation to Norm) is retiring because I’ve really hated all of the inappropriately overscaled development that he’s been gung-ho for during his terms. He’s running for governor now and I hope it ends his political career.
