I have to admit I had a moment right at the end when the last panel guy talked about how important it is for media and journalists to do things carefully and acknowledge and correct mistakes. Because after all, Dan Rather still hasn’t acknowledged that the Killian Memos he trumpeted on 60 Minutes were blatant fakes.

But he’s not sounding too well these days - slurring and mispronouncing words more and more.

Congress doesn’t even let people bring books into the Capitol Gallery, let alone guns.

They don’t allow phones or papers into the Gallery.

Yeah, guns? Why is it that they think more guns will make a school safer, but demand not only everyone disarm in their legislative building but also not even bring books or phones to the Capitol to see them in action.

I thought CNN and MSNBC were doing a pretty good job of journalists being more than stenographers. And then there’s the reporting from the Washington Post and Newsweek.

Just look at how many Faux news viewers absolutely detest Shep Smith, since he often reports facts that counter the propaganda spewed all day.

Reality has a liberal bias.

This is interesting. It seems that Feinstein is being credibly challenged from the left:

The California Democratic Party denied U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein an endorsement at its state convention Saturday, a sign of liberal discontent with the establishment among grassroots members.

Ms. Feinstein’s opponent, Kevin de León, president pro tempore in the state Senate, captured 54% of the vote among delegates here. Sixty percent of the votes were needed to capture the party’s official endorsement ahead of the June 5 primary.

Most of the early negative comments say “she’s too old” (which is reasonable) but then some say “she’s too corporatist” (which is also reasonable, but different). I suspect that the latter is driving at least some of the former.

I used to be quite anti-Feinstein; but actually I’ve been rather impressed with her over the last year, so I’m unsure. I might well vote for her.

In other words, Trump has lived his entire life in the rich asshole bubble, where his life is so ordered that the top priority for everyone else around him is to make the rich asshole happy.

Now this model is being tried in the US presidency, surprising nobody. What could possibly go wrong?

Here we have to note that Trump’s dogshit first year in office is what will pass for cruise control in this administration when faced with no significant domestic* or foreign issues.

And practically in my own damn neighborhood: Details Released In Major Weapons Bust In East Patchogue

Authorities have released details on the arrest of an East Patchogue man for allegedly selling an illegal AR-15 assault rifle and four large capacity ammunition feeding devices to a person he believed to be prohibited from owning a gun.

Larry Guerrieri, 65, was arrested Wednesday following the execution of a search warrant at his home on Peekskill Avenue by Suffolk County Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Squad and Emergency Services Section officers. The investigation began with a tip provided by an investigator in the Suffolk County Police Department’s Pistol Licensing Bureau, Suffolk County DA Tim Sini said during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

The search warrant resulted in the seizure of:

Four assault rifles, at least three of which are illegal in New York
19 various rifles and shotguns
25 handguns
10 illegal assorted knives
8 military-style ammunition containers filled with thousands of various caliber rounds of ammunition
More than 50 large capacity ammunition feeding devices, including a 50-round magazine drum

This guy hangs out at a bar that I frequent. I always figured he was just some old hippie dude.

Dianne Goldman Berman Feinstein (/ˈfaɪnstaɪn/; born Dianne Emiel Goldman;[1] June 22, 1933) is an American politician and the senior United States Senator from California, serving since 1992.
(snip)
At the age of 84, Feinstein is the oldest currently serving United States Senator.

(she’s 9 months older than Orrin Hatch)

So… maybe it’s time she just hang it up?

I’ve had two discussions of the mass shooting and guns question in the last day on FB. One with a schoolmate, another with my Wingnut Cousin. One thing they have in common? Complete unwillingness to admit ANY possibility that guns are a problem.

I think they feel like if they give any ground at all, they’ll lose all their guns. Wingnut Cousin can’t even admit that no other developed democracy has mass shootings like we do. He’s ‘seen some statistics that refute that’, but of course, he can’t name another country like us who endures nearly daily mass shootings.

Neither of these discussions turned rancorous, but they simply don’t have any answer when you point out that other developed countries have mental illness, violent video games and movies, broken families - all the things they point to as reasons for mass shootings - but they DON’T have mass shootings. They start going off into the weeds of ‘they’d use something else’, or ‘make .223 illegal and someone will invent a similar round’, or whatever. You can’t get them to accept that the availability of guns is anything other than good.

NBA coach Greg Popovich weighs in on LeBron James speaking out politically and not just dribbling a ball for Laura Ingraham.

The San Antonio Spurs are in Cleveland, and Popovich is often asked for comments because he does not shy away from politics and calling people out.

I guess you can say he loves to Popoff!

Heh…I get the feeling he is not a Fxx viewer. We already know he’s not a Trump fan.

Go Pop!

ESPN - Gregg Popovich: LeBron James may have more impact off court than on

CLEVELAND — San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he believes that Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James “possibly has more impact off the court” through his social activism than he’s had as a basketball player, and encouraged James to continue to speak up.

“I don’t pick and choose what LeBron should talk about any more than any talking heads who try to pick and choose,” Popovich said Sunday, before the Spurs played the Cavs.

Popovich, who has coached the Spurs all 15 seasons that James has been in the league, faced him in the NBA Finals three times and was an assistant coach under Larry Brown when James played in the 2004 Olympics, took note of Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham’s recent criticism of James, saying he should “shut up and dribble” in response to comments by James in an ad for Uber — also featuring Kevin Durant and ESPN’s Cari Champion — that challenged President Donald Trump.

Popovich did not take kindly to Ingraham’s sentiments.

“To me, when I heard about that it was just an unbelievable show of arrogance for a talking head to try and tell someone else if they can speak, what they can speak about and when and where to do it,” Popovich said. “It’s just ludicrous, but [also] to not have a feel for who this guy is [is disappointing].

“I mean, think about when he came into public view, how young was he? And to this day he hasn’t missed a step, he hasn’t fallen off the ledge and he’s been a brilliant example for millions of kids, especially kids with lesser opportunity and haven’t had the same advantages as others. They see in this guy somebody who has consistently exhibited excellence in the workplace and gives them a voice and lets them know that you can speak about anything.

“There really is a First Amendment and you can have opinions — as a coach, as a plumber, as an astrophysicist and a lowly reporter. They can have whatever opinions they want, and that’s what’s amazing about this when you look at this guy, how many millions of dollars, tens of millions of dollars he’s given, tens of millions of kids that are inspired by him. It’s kind of like the ‘Black Panther’ movie.

“How cool is that for kids to see that, to have that superhero? Well, LeBron’s been that for a long time. For somebody to be totally numb to that and attack him in such a childish way really speaks more volumes about that individual than it does LeBron. He’s very, very special. We should all be very proud that we have someone like that who’s willing to speak about a variety of topics and you listen to them all.”

re: #23 petesh

It’s the just-world fallacy taken to its narcissistic extreme.

Reflection on the larger patterns of the world would mean recognizing that, nay, there is no “you deserve what you have.” Not in the socialist redistribution sense, but in mix of chaos and determinism that has laid out, long-term, where effort and time and resources have been allocated. For any individual, that’s a terrifying existential notion—you are brief warp in a larger flow of time, subject to both the vast upstream of events and the splashes of random happenings with no meaning—for a society, it’s the kind of upheaval that prompts enormous disruption.

The Old Kingdoms Egyptians believed in the regular rise of the Nile and the intermediacy of the pharaoh. When the former failed and the latter was thus suspect, they experienced a crisis of identity and belief that’s recorded as lost, melancholy compositions in which poets and letter-writers doubt the the very foundation of their universe. Toyotomi Hideyoshi foresaw the practical results of a Japan open to the world, how it would facilitate that shaking-apart of the just-assembled provinces, and transformed the entire nation by closing it off. The cultural ramifications are still being felt—Japan did not become a colony, remained cultural distinct, but also began to experiment with being a colonizer. WW1 broke the back of Germany, twice—military collapse followed by economic collapse, and in that breach a small number of low men with high office “solved” the disruption by reaching for toxic nationalism.

The basic American myth is one of self-determination and meritocracy, it and has purposefully mutilated its history to maintain that narrative theme. That we all live in a post-apocalyptic landscape, that the original settlers saw the mass-death of natives as Providence even as they occupied their settlements, is overlooked. That slavery was a pivot in the labor economy, and a determining factor in politics until the Civil War—has been carefully and strategically disassembled in favor of a milquetoast “it was bad, it happened in isolation” reading. The extent of our own experiment with colonialism has been forgotten. The complex path of entry in the two World Wars has been glossed over as triumphalism. The even more complex reality of post-war economics—king of a ravaged developed world—simply isn’t discussed at all. Detailed understanding of the Cold War—with its proxies, its choice to side with dictators and fascists damn the consequences—is nonexistent: the threat of Soviet nuclear arms silences discussion of efficacy of means. Americans have consistently been told they deserve what they have.

The world has moved on, but the American mythology has persisted and become more and more frantic as less and less confirmation has been available. It’s no longer an international economy comprised of collapsing European empires, a failed-from-the-start Soviet empire, and hollowed-out ex-colonies trying to catch up with no capital. Automation means people’s labor matters less, that every worker is more interchangeable. Communications heading towards instant worldwide connection means that regionality isn’t a factor in labor; and this is multiplied by easy and cheap shipping across oceans.

And in the 80s—when the post-WW2 Myth was at its height—we started electing people the disassembled the practical mechanisms that gave us an advantage. And we’re dealing with the long-term consequences.

Which brings us back to that idea of the just world fallacy…because that’s the dark side of almost seventy years of Americans believing that the health of the nation was entirely earned through efforts and industry, and that anyone not participating must not being achieving*: it’s never been a generally-applied concept (a la Kant), it’s always been special pleading. So now that people who feel they should be succeeding—according to the Myth—are failing the answer is either (1) the critical-to-self-image Myth was bullshit, or (2) the world is conspiring to fuck them over.

*This note is very important: racism applied this all-encompassing just world fallacy, and the zero-sum thought that blacks/Asians/Hispanics could only do better at the expense of whites, long before white people started consistently applying it to themselves. Whiteness isn’t really a race, it’s an in-group that gets to own its successes but explain away its faults, contrasted with out-groups that are contaminants to social hygiene and collectively responsible for their faults. And whiteness recruits individuals and groups opportunistically to maintain this image of “we are individuals collectively defined by our individuality, but coincidental we have a collective identity defined by our pooled merit and successes”—which explains the appropriation of regional groups throughout history to create a “Western Civilization” out of myriad disconnected; the incorporation as-needed of liminal groups—the Irish and Slavs for example—for purely practical reasons; and the accumulation of “exceptional” non-whites that are used as bludgeons.

What we’re watching is individual incidences of a worldview collapse: they are doubling down because the story is integral to their being. They will accept less solid information, more outright lies, because the latter allow them not to confront their own limitations, or the limitation of the nation. Hence the sheer variety, and increasing baroque-ness, of explanations that claim an outside force—Simmelian strangers already present in the society, dangerous foreigners, international conspiracies. The sad thing is that to achieve this, they will simultaneously cling to symbols and deform the meaning of their symbols.

Now, that’s a very fine rant. I’ve been banging on about the failure of ‘Mercans to notice the gradual lowering of their economic status relative to the rest of the world (from about half of global GDP in 1945 down to 16% (PPP) now. I think the general myth goes back much more than 70 years, and of course racism goes back to Columbus.

My key takeaway, which differs very little from yours, I think, is that the irreducible 27% and the 12–15% closest to them are squealing because of the unconscious fear that everything will be taken away from them. Take it from an immigrant from the UK, life after empire can be better than life during it.

A flaw in CA’s system is that it seems it can discourage a party pushing it’s members. I don’t really mind if Feinstein wins if she’s doing a good job of representing her constituents of all kinds. But if, being a Democrat, the party can’t force her left due to CA’s election system, I think that’s a big flaw.

If you take a look at the macro economic indicators for the past 50 years, they clearly show that middle class prosperity peaked right before the first OPEC oil embargo in October 1973 and they’ve been on the decline ever since. Lots of factors play in, the increase in petroleum prices, IW Abel surrendering the United Steelworkers Right to Strike, Nixon’s wage/price controls designed to interfere with collective bargaining, Chrysler’s near collapse in 1979, The rise of the New Right with California’s Prop 13 and Reagan’s election. Reagan breaking PATCO and going after unions, Millken’s junk bond spree which drained corporate pension funds away, The death of the Steel industry in the mid 80’s, the S&L collapse, 1987 market meltdown, free trade deals, spiraling health care costs, bankruptcy restrictions,Glass-Steagel repeal and continuing weakening of labor all contribute to the continual decay of the middle class.

There’s another reason to reduce the size of the magazine.

People routinely tape three 30-round mags together. Middle mag up, with two magazines upside down, taped either side w/duck tape.

Shoot the first mag, hit the release, turn it 180 degrees, snap it in. Ready to rock and roll in under two seconds.

Ninety rounds in two minutes? And you’ve go a .40? I’m gonna shoot you to pieces. Literally.

You can’t tape 10-round magazines together.

Dead heroes are just dead and don’t accomplish anything in the process other than dying.

I graduated from a rural/suburban high school in the far reaches of Houston 40 years ago. We didn’t have a cop on campus, even though there were 4,000 kids in this particular school. In the fall of 1975, there were a series of bomb threats called in to the high school. For the first bomb threat, the teachers went through lockers. The second and subsequent times they were all, “No that is not part of our job duties, you need to send for the Houston PD bomb sniffing dog.” And that’s what happened. I remember going out to the field to the south of the school and just standing and waiting….waiting….waiting. One day, the threat was called in before school opening at 7:25 and we were simply ushered to the field, where we stayed until we’d stayed long enough for it to be counted as a day and the district would get its state money. Then we were bused home.

But after that first time, teachers didn’t open up a single locker after a bomb threat. And I don’t blame them. Had there been an honest to God bomb, the teacher could have been badly injured. And, as it turned out there was a bomb. The threats stopped, everyone more or less forgot about it. One day a few months later, as I was walking to the cafeteria, a very small pipe bomb went off in front of our auditorium. A couple of people were injured (not badly). And yeah, that was our mad bomber.

So no, I don’t blame the resource officer for not charging in, nor the four Broward County sheriff’s deputies. I rather doubt they carry AR-15 equivalents around. I don’t believe police should have to commit suicide if they’re not appropriately armed just to satiate the blood lust of some people.

Absolutely. We’ve been screwed both internally and externally. The internal one is the better known (why can’t my grandkids have the opportunity I did?), which is why I tend to focus on the external: Why are those foreigners telling us what to do? Partly because it lies behind some (not all) of the internal stuff.

American elites have responded to the adjustment in relative national economies by transcending them, by becoming multi-national. That emphatically includes Trump. They have used the threat or actuality of shipping jobs abroad to lower wages here. And then the bastards blame it on foreigners (see Trump, passim).

The point I’m making is not in conflict with yours, they are complementary.

As an Army vet, I would say that one of the biggest reasons I gave Uncle Sam 16 years of holding a check that said “Any amount up to and including my life” was so that anyone could protest - and that if I disagreed, I could protest them back.

This protest, I would agree with you & if I could afford to, I’d be there too. It’s a sick joke & I hope the regulars can find a way to make it embarrass Pumpkin Pinochet without harming themselves.

That’s a good question. Sadly, I suspect the answer is no.

Now, here’s a question I couldn’t determine the answer to: Has there been a mass shooting at a majority black school?

Don’t think so.

(WARNING - Off Color Uncomfortable Satire)

But obviously a crazy bad (White) guy would never attack a Black school because they are already so well armed and know how to use guns.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Right wing buffoons and Fox types are busy slamming law enforcement and the FBI for failing Parkland.

The idiocy and logical failing here is astounding because every single one of the right wing/GOP/NRA tropes failed miserably.

1) The good guy with the gun failed to stop a mass shooting.
2) More good guys with guns were not able to stop a mass shooting.
3) The bad guy was still able to get the gun no matter how many laws were in place.
4) The good guys didn’t take out the bad guy.
5) But for the easy availability of guns, the shooter wouldn’t have been able to get guns, let alone the AR-15 that has become a weapon of choice in mass shootings across the nation.
6) But for the NRA/GOP blocking meaningful gun control, gun violence continues at a rate far in excess of every US peer nation.
7) States dominated by the GOP have lax gun laws and also have far higher per capital gun death rates than those with strong gun laws.

This is where we are, and this is what has to change - it includes voting out the GOP/NRA and ending the NRA stranglehold on gun control.

And the reason I bring this up is that there are for more white people who think that their problems can be solved by guns. And so many of these are attacks on the school the person went to. In the case of Newton, it was the nearby school.

GOP/NRA - the background checks are a false sense of security.

Right. Because the GOP/NRA have prevented them from having the kind of teeth needed to prevent the wrong people from getting guns. Mental health? Age? The GOP/NRA don’t want to cross reference that, and the NRA made it clear that they don’t want age limits either.

Then again, the age limits are a deflection - mass shooters have all too frequently been white guys in their 20s. The overwhelming majority of guns used were legally obtained.

They were the good guys with guns right up to the moment they became mass murderers.

They’re probably a legal way to dress out a fetish gun, now that the AWB is dead. Any renewal would almost certainly grandfather existing rigs. (IIRC, it took several military-type features to put an AR/AK under the ban. California was stricter.)

The ATF has arrested people for exactly this kind of thing before. At least they did before Trump. With the right high temperature glue or a proper sanding and brazing job it will last a good long time, especially with subsonic .223 or .22lr ammo. There’s no legit purpose for it, no real muzzle brake in that caliber needs to be longer than a couple inches tops because by the time the bullet gets that far all the gas will have exited the barrel and without a tube to trap it will have been directed to the sides and back to reduce felt recoil. Anything longer than that should be prima facie evidence of intent to violate the NFA.

Yeah, the NRA and right wing gun humpers would go nuts if the US implemented an Israel-style gun control, because it would mean most everyone would not have a gun.

It’s also rather telling that when you see photos used by right wingers as proof of Israelis having easy access to guns, the photos are inevitably of women in uniform.

Yeah - women in UNIFORM. They’re soldiers or police.

But this nonsense will never end - nor will the fact that all of this idolization of Israeli culture ends the moment when people realize that they’ve got a far more liberal outlook in many ways (health care, abortion, tight gun control, etc.) that these right wingers would never tolerate if enacted here.

I heard that Trump has set the day for his big military march for November 11 (Veterans’ Day). Uh, would veterans be offended if Americans like me, who never served, were to go to Washington and protest this shit show?

Seriously, though, is this a “protest this crazy” or “stay the fuck away from this crazy” moment?

Nope. Protest away at this travesty.

Also, don’t we have existing trade agreements that would be violated by a 25% tariff?

I spent a lot of time on a hobby-related site that had an “anything goes!” forum. That became the most interesting. But over time, even though most of the members were progressive or liberal leaning, about five or six fact-free types came to dominate every discussion. I doesn’t take much. I knew about LGF from the Dan Rather fiasco many years ago, but was pleased to see it more settled. I’ll admit that I like it here because the variety is across the range of left-to-center contributors. That may seem like a bubble to some, but there is a No-BS reality check that makes it a valuable source of information about politics, but also music and other fun stuff.

After implicating Ken Starr, it would be irresponsible not to include:

Given my PTSD and my understanding of trauma, it’s very likely that my thinking would not necessarily be changing at this time had it not been for the #MeToo movement—not only because of the new lens it has provided but also because of how it has offered new avenues toward the safety that comes from solidarity. Just four years ago, in an essay for this magazine, I wrote the following: “Sure, my boss took advantage of me, but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship. Any ‘abuse’ came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.” I now see how problematic it was that the two of us even got to a place where there was a question of consent. Instead, the road that led there was littered with inappropriate abuse of authority, station, and privilege. (Full stop.)

To paraphrase Sarah Kendzior, one mark of an authoritarian regime is the constant flow of news and opinion — often contradictory — to throw the opposition off balance, while the regime behind the smokescreen quietly dismantles the state. Carson at HUD, DeVos at Education, Tillerson at State, et alia — they are all there to strip the walls down to the 2x4s, gut the Civil Service staff, and all but kill existing programs through inactivity/defunding. Meanwhile, everyone focuses on the constant shitstorm revolving around the Oval Office and the Twitler.

Removing Trump from office is only the first step. If Pence replaces him, he will probably keep the same cast of characters, who will continue to reduce the executive branch to rubble.

Cadet Bone Spurs is a bully and a coward.

I think it is much worse than that.

As I said earlier, he has a taste for violence and death. Maybe he has never acted, but it is there. Just think of all his statements.

There’s the ones you mention. There is this bit about killing drug dealers.

There was his comment about being able to go out on 5th avenue and shoot someone and he would still get votes.

There was comment just the other night about a teacher having a gun and they would have taken Cruz right out in Florida.

He seemed to get off on wanting his supporters to beat up on protesters at his rally. He said in the old days they have to carry people like that out on a stretcher.

I’m sure if I spend more time I could think of more. Research and there are probably even more.

So yeah, bully and coward packed into a person that may be one step from being homicidal.

And I know, we shouldn’t diagnose someone we’ve never met, but he hangs his bent out for all to see.

Drama.

Also, it’s a trope from the 1950s SF of Heinlein and others, that somehow people living in space would somehow regulate their own behavior, for fear of being pushed out the airlock.

Practically speaking, if you wanted to execute someone in an airlock, you could just evacuate the air without opening the hatch, then recycle the remains. But for TV/movies, the idea of recycling dead bodies would probably revolt a lot of the viewers.

Tonight’s season finale of “Victoria” — OMG they’re so fucking with us.

So three great season-long romance subplots came to fruition tonight, with happy happy joy joy engagements. There’s

1) the guy with incurable syphilis, is engaged to the woman he loves who loves him but she’s willing to have a sexless marriage because “I just want to be by your side”.

2) the girl who almost married a gay guy, except he died heroically the episode after she realized he’s gay and can’t even fake being attracted to her… is proposed to by the dead fiance’s boyfriend because their shared mourning has brought them together (and “there’s more than one kind of love”.

and

3) the cook and dresser who’ll marry in secret and be together in secret, since being single is a job requirement and they don’t want to be fired.

Also,

the cinematographers and set dressers made EVERY SINGLE SCENE look like a Currier & Ives print.

So very Victorian.

In the past they would’ve responded through prepared anodyne press releases and kept their people in defilade. They learned, for awhile at least, after letting Michael Moore interview old addled Charlton Heston. They got off easy then because Heston was sick and therefore somewhat sympathetic and Moore tended to come off somewhat as an ass. They didn’t let their people walk unprepared into an ambush like that again until Dana thought publicly arguing on national television with a bunch of teenage mass shooting survivors was a good idea.

It was not a good idea.

Someone mentioned my name earlier in the day when I was logged out asking if I would object to a protest of Donald Trump’s proposed ego stroking strongman parade with the military on Veterans Day.

I of course would not object. I think the whole idea of such a parade is repugnant (never mind the damage to DC’s infrastructure, the military itself saying it would impact military readiness by taking tens of thousands of troops to move equipment, costing upwards of $100,000,000 in the name of fiscal conservatism when that money could be put to a less flashy use - like funding the VA, &c). It’s also a giant FU to DC residents (who get no say in this and lo, voted for Hillary Clinton).

In theory this could be done in a place with lots of military personnel and equipment close by (like Ft. Hood, for example) to reduce the cost, time, and impact on the military. That’s not the point (particularly since the White House is not saying he will even be there).

As for protesting, I can see it being spun a couple different ways by conservatives. That said, if I was in the area I would likely protest. They would deflect with:

a) Liberals don’t support the troops, veterans, or the President (or all of those)
b) No liberals going would not significantly reduce the crowd: Plenty of conservatives would come in from out-of-town to support this.

If I was protesting, I would keep protest placards on the point that this is a banana republic exercise, or a massive waste of money. I wouldn’t attack Donald Trump in a protest sign, and certainly wouldn’t go after the troops in the parade with one.

Wakanda is (as far as I can tell) a hereditary dictatorship. The son got his position because his dad died and his sister got hers because of the privilege of being part of the ruling family.

It’d be like if Trump died and Don Jr. became President and Ivanka was given some important position simply by virtue of birth. It’s pure nepotism it’s just that in the movie the people are competent and not dicks.

Oh, and Wakanda’s insularity makes North Korea look downright friendly and open. Plus, its economy is so good because of random luck from outerspace. It’s basically a fantasy African version of a Gulf state like Qatar or Kuwait.

I haven’t as yet seen the movie but is Wakanda a dictatorship or a monarchy? One certainly can argue that an old style monarchy is equivalent to a dictatorship, but a country that has ruled by the same family since before contemporary times could be classified as an absolute monarchy. It’s very old-style government.

The cynic in me says Trump would kill all the drugs dealers - except the ones working for his Russian buds.

That was in Argentina. The spokesperson for the embassy said they’d uncovered a cocaine ring to use diplomatic courier service to smuggle cocaine to Europe. They called in the local police to raid an annex building to their embassy; the police arrested a bunch of people.

This time they responded with the kind of stuff they used to say only in the back room.

And with a dead-eyed front person who perfectly conveyed how few fucks were given about the dead kids, the live survivors, and human beings in general. Like, a shoggoth wearing that skin suit from The Silence from the Lambs.

Where, exactly, was Eric at this time?

Yeah, they look totally separate.

I don’t go in for such comparisons much, because the rejoinder pops right out of the slot:

Planned Parenthood versus Planned Parenthood Action. PPA does precisely the same thing that NRA-ILA does for the NRA.

I don’t know if there is a fix for that when it comes right down to it: The I Amendment allows freedom of association, and allows redress of grievances with the government. I presume that means you can form associations to seek redress for grievances.

The issue I have is corporations (which are not people, my friend) forming associations to redress grievances, or astroturfing other organisations to do it.

re: #362 Hecuba’s daughter

It’s a weird hybrid system that doesn’t really fit into normal -ocracies. It’s sort of reminiscent of the Mandate of Heaven concept of Chinese rule…but for real, since there’s a cat god that gets final say…plus the mix of hereditary position and bureacracy also of imperial China (complete with the intrigue that comes with powerful distal leaders countering a central power). So “monarchy” is probably the best term.

There’s five tribes with their own leadership structures that seem to be hereditary, and form a ruling council around the monarch, and control specific aspects of Wakandan life (which makes the system also a bit caste-like). Then there’s the Wakandan monarch, who seems to have near-total power over key matters—such as the spies/overseas agents (War Dogs), the vibranium, and has a discretionary military force with broad application (Dora Milaje).

The monarch is also the Black Panther, and is bestowed with spiritual power of Wakanda by rites, as well as the Black Panther’s super strength, etc—this supernatural being far outside normal political calculation, because an actual fricking god gives them the thumbs-up. But the monarch can be ritually challenged by people of a certain level of standing in the five tribes, so theoretically it hasn’t always been T’Challa’s familial line that have been Black Panther.

I was going to Photoshop that up but then I remembered I’d like to be able to sleep tonight.

re: #244 HappyWarrior

I used to post on a lefty blog in the Bush years. Lotta 9/11 truthers unfortunately.

I did not run into the political bloggosphere at all until fairly recently, only four or five years ago. (I first ran into Daily Kos and wrote quite a number of diaries there.) Then I slacked off on political diaries for awhile, until I ran across LGF from the Huffington Post article that was written about our esteemed host Mr. Johnson, and Wonkette (which popped up in a random search).

I lurked for a long time both here before I surfaced, and at Wonkette, hence my fairly recent join-date here.

About Axios:

It was founded by one of the principals of Politico and the editor-in-chief used to work at Bloomberg LLC. They seem to follow standard rules of journalism, that is, they don’t publish shit that has no factual basis. I’d rate Axios as far more reliable than most independent news outlets, maybe as good as WaPo.

=re: #296 Backwoods_Sleuth

This seems to go back to the age-old (well, as long as there has been USENet and IRC) debate about whether you should engage trolls, or block and move on.

With the exception of suspiciously bot-like accounts, the movement of teenagers and young adults on social media over the Parkland shooting issue seems to be engage, educate (or humiliate), and defenestrate them in real time live for everyone else to see. If they get threats, then track down their public information from their own accounts and report them (a la “If you’re a Nazi and you lose your job, it’s your fault”).

Then humiliate them some more when they block, set accounts to private, or otherwise hide.

This leaves Movement Conservatism in a poor position: If they do not engage, then the movement grows and it sets the narrative (the most important part of a political movement). If they do engage, they can’t seem to do it without attacking teenagers (like the wingnut up there Stonekettle responded to).

No political movement is successful overnight, but dayum, this one seems to be moving at the speed of sound.
