Honestly, I’m getting more out of comedians’ analysis these days than almost any journalist or cable news show. A lot of the mainstream media coverage of this awful administration just ends up frustrating and infuriating me, because it’s so “view from nowhere.”

Comedians like Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert don’t hesitate to point out how horrible, stupid and villainous the Trump gang is, and it’s funny too. I’ll take that over another New York Times sympathetic profile of Trump supporters any day.

That’s why crowdsourced ProPublica, or the Guardian, are more willing to go all in for tracking down what is really happening.

Remember, Trump was, and I presume still is, friends with Comcast/NBCU. They made millions of dollars together.

Playing Trump’s ugliness for humor is a win for comedians.

That’s why TV networks go for that.

But there isn’t much to network “news” anymore, as it seems the “news” has been relegated to specialty cable-TV channels (Fox News, MSNBC, etc.) which are mostly for confirmation bias, with an extra twist of vile on the part of Fox.

When I was growing up, watching “the news” on one of the big 3 networks was the thing one did at night.

Now, most Americans can grow up without even watching the nightly news. It’s not much of a thing anymore, compared to what it used to be. That’s why news audiences are so old.

There is an issue unique to the president and White House staff under the Presidential Records Act. Yes, they are entitled to keep private email and documents, but a lot of their documents may fall into the categories of documents that are governed by the act. The fact that they are using systems specifically designed to circumvent the law (as there’s no evidence that email or documents were archived) is very much a problem.

It is also a problem if documents are being hidden/destroyed so that a review of whether they qualify under the Act can be conducted.

The auto-delete function is the problem in this particular scenario. If this guy was using it as a private email, it’s a nothingburger beyond the fact that leaving the address and password at a bus stop is a potential personal security breach. But if staffers are using private email so they can avoid the Records Act, that’s a very big deal. I have no problem with people using encrypted email, it’s probably the smarter thing to do. I just want to make sure that they’re not violating yet another law.

I meant in the context of our discussion, not in the context of the President and his staff.

Even in the context of him and his staff, they are permitted to delete or otherwise dispose of records which are not relevant (after the Chief Archivist reviews them), and requires staff to use private non-governmental means for personal communications (Proton Mail would qualify for that).

There is also the aptly-named COVFEFE Act introduced last year to preserve social media postings in the same manner the PRA requires it for other documentation. As of yet it has not passed.

you dont give up your rights when you get elected to office
and i believe public officials should be held to the standard of “appearance of impropriety”

if it even appears you even once, washed official business through your personal account, and didnt maintain the same full control for posterity that you would with your official account, you are toast

its the nature of the information taht should be the guide, not the isp it went through

so when i read:

New York City’s violent crime rate is considerably lower than, say, Lubbock’s. This is even without all the natural hazards to life and limb in the latter; feral hogs, diseased rabbits, howling dust storms and, soon to arrive, blistering dry desert heat. On the off chance that it does rain, you can add flash floods to the list. NYC does have a coyote though. It lives in Central Park and obviously infiltrated across one of the bridges. Survivors, coyotes. That’s why I like them so much.

The Presidential Records Act defines private papers. The issue here is how do we determine what is private and what is public. Because the public papers belong to us, not to the president. A review that says, “this is private, we aren’t maintaining/releasing a copy” or “this is a public record and we will maintain a copy according to law” seems like a no brainer.

It’s not a problem when you have someone trustworthy in office. But it’s much more of a problem when you have someone who either likes to play in the grey areas of the law or simply doesn’t care.

“We have received a complaint against Facebook in relation to allegations involving Cambridge Analytica and have therefore opened a formal investigation,” says Commissioner Daniel Therrien. “The first step will be to confirm with the company whether the personal information of Facebook users in Canada was affected.”

The investigation will examine Facebook’s compliance with Canada’s federal private sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

“The allegations we’ve seen in media reports raise extremely important privacy questions. The digital world, and social media in particular, have become entrenched in our daily lives and people want their rights to be respected.”

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office has an ongoing related investigation.

“We will remain in contact with the UK office and will work with other data protection authorities as appropriate. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that the privacy rights of Canadian Facebook users are protected,” says Commissioner Therrien.

Peters didn’t jump ship when Hannity was spewing conspiracy theories about Seth Rich.

It took until now.

On the impeachment bill in the Penna. House, Daily Kos notes that due to the existing gerrymandered nature of the Penna. statehouse, the GOP can obtain impeachments without a single Democratic vote.

In the House, the GOP is in the majority. (Three seats are vacant.)

In the Senate, the divide is 34-16. That’s enough to convict.

The GOP rep in question is using the same argument the GOP used in the case: The Supreme Court of Penna. overstepped its constitutional bounds to infringe on the prerogatives of the state legislature.

Several Democrats in the House are on record saying this is an outrageous abuse of power by the House if they go through with this, but the state constitution says that the House determines whether someone should be removed (and it doesn’t have to be for a crime).

I agree, but that’s the way it’s applied.

The question of “high crimes and misdemeanors” however is somewhat vague, since it is generally assumed you cannot convict a sitting President of a crime (though I am not sure that’s been tested). The standard seems to be if there was a crime, he could be charged after removal. Hence, the “political” aspect.

They never have in my lifetime. The issue is not “Republicans,” the issue is “conservatives.” In that light, they supported the Crown in the Revolution, the Civil War, Jim Crow, the Klan, &c.

My first political knowledge about a Republican president was Richard Nixon. FOX News is an outgrowth of Roger Ailes working for him. When Nixon went through the Saturday Night Massacre, Robert Bork was promised a shot at the Supreme Court by the GOP. When Reagan took over, that was his nomination.

Conservatives have been at this a long time. (Go all the way back to Federalist John Adams trying to pack a whole bunch of newly-created court seats and other offices, which resulted in Marbury v Madison).

Florida School Shooting Causes Copycat Threats Across Canada (goes to Huffington Post Canada)

Five tweens and teens have been charged with threatening schools on social media, Ontario’s provincial police said Tuesday as they reported a “spike” in online threats following a deadly school shooting in Florida last month.

Sgt. Peter Leon said officers conducted six separate investigations in the province’s central division, starting shortly after the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., in which 14 students and three teachers were killed.

“We started to see a spike in them,” Leon said of the online threats. “Unfortunately, when events take place south of the border … we do start to see situations present themselves here in Ontario.”

Five people between the ages of 12 and 17 were charged with uttering threats. Four of the five were students at the schools they’re accused of threatening and the other was a former student, Leon said. Police did not arrest a sixth because the person was too young to face charges.

On the impeachment bill in the Penna. House, Daily Kos notes that due to the existing gerrymandered nature of the Penna. statehouse, the GOP can obtain impeachments without a single Democratic vote.

In the House, the GOP is in the majority. (Three seats are vacant.)

In the Senate, the divide is 34-16. That’s enough to convict.

The GOP rep in question is using the same argument the GOP used in the case: The Supreme Court of Penna. overstepped its constitutional bounds to infringe on the prerogatives of the state legislature.

Several Democrats in the House are on record saying this is an outrageous abuse of power by the House if they go through with this, but the state constitution says that the House determines whether someone should be removed (and it doesn’t have to be for a crime).

This is absolutely terrifying — this is the way to single party rule. Republicans are clearly all fond of dictatorships.

Unfortunately, it seems nearly certain we are stuck with J.B. Pritzker as the Democratic gubernatorial nominee.

This puts me in a bad position: I think it is disqualifying for political candidates like Mitt Romney and our current governor Bruce Rauner to have significant offshore holdings. Pritzker’s offshore money is actually worse than the others, turning up in the Paradise Papers.

Of course, Pritzker went on to lie about the age of these accounts.

I do not think I can vote for him.

The problem is that this is basically the same tactic that the armed forces use to overcome the built-in human barrier to killing another human. Alleged perpetrators of crime are dehumanized, and police officers are trained in military tactics so as to lower the psychological impact to killing them. All of this in the name of “safety”, when in reality we are far less safe with cops ranging around that are trained as semi-professional killers.

We had a totally worthless powerpoint presentation yesterday about what to do in an ‘active shooter’ situation at work. It was pure consultant-speak. It presented every situation as a question without providing us one single bit of useful advice on how we could find a safe space. It suggested locking ourselves in our offices when 98% of the workforce is in open cubicles, which were recently remodeled so that everyone works in dead-end corridors that only open onto main corridors. We sent a LOT of comments about that back to the safety committee.

We were talking about how we should act when we run into cops on the site, and I turned to the one black guy in our work group and said “Of course, you’re screwed”. He was the only one who laughed.

Rauner bought the race last time — Pritzker can outspend him. People who are teachers disliked his main opponent Biss — the candidate with actual experience — because of his position on reducing teacher benefits. However, most of my non-teacher friends supported Biss.

My position in the general election is simple — Pritzker is a Democrat; that’s enough to get my vote. I don’t care how sleazy he is. But there is definitely something wrong with this trend of rich individuals buying offices at the top instead of working their way up.

If it makes you feel any better, Hillary had no problem whatsoever winning Illinois with a Republican governor in the state house. This is not a swing state where the sitting governor has significant power to swing elections.

Whatever else one can say about Pritzker —- he is a real Democrat and part of the Chicago Democratic establishment. He speaks a good game and has an intimate knowledge of the state and the issues. One of my Biss supporting friends admitted several days ago that he really liked Pritzker’s positions. The question is whether, if elected, he can help Illinois escape from its financial mess.

Rauner bought the race last time — Pritzker can outspend him. People who are teachers disliked his main opponent Biss — the candidate with actual experience — because of his position on reducing teacher benefits. However, most of my non-teacher friends supported Biss.

My position in the general election is simple — Pritzker is a Democrat; that’s enough to get my vote. I don’t care how sleazy he is. But there is definitely something wrong with this trend of rich individuals buying offices at the top instead of working their way up.

The Blago tapes. The FBI found no wrong doing on Pritzker’s behalf.

As for his $ and the off-shore holdings. The Dems won’t stand for it the way Republicans are letting Trump get away with everything. Pritzker’s choice for Lt. Governor, Juliana Stratton, was a smart move. She’s tough as nails and she won’t nevessarily roll over on JB’s behalf.

The alternative is Rauner. That’s all there is to it. I found Biss’s message too one-denensional.

I’m no military specialist or historian, but doesn’t the armed services no longer allow members of the same family to serve in the same way together on the same ship or all in the same company, etc.? I thought they decided it puts too much a burden and strain on a family.

Until the Republican party becomes sane again, we don’t need a situation where Republican can continue to boast how many states they run. We have to stop them and the governor seat gives them a foothold on the operation of this state. Ogilvie and Edgar were honest and effective Republican governors but they were a long time ago.

I totally get it…and sorry to have clearly dismayed several of my fellow Illinoisans.

We have a good chunk of time between now and November. Like I said, I will keep an open mind and perhaps I can be swayed to vote for the nominee and accept behavior from him I have regularly condemned in Republican politicians.

FWIW, my problem is less about rich people avoiding taxes and more about a lack of detail orientation. If you are attempting to purchase the office of governor, how could you not have a trusted friend in accounting go over your finances with a fine tooth comb? How could you lie about the age and nature of offshore accounts when it was clearly so easy to learn the truth?
