re: #1 Ace Rothstein
You won, Trump. For now.
Yeah. Thanks Schneiderman. We were counting on you. Perhaps the remaining lawyers can take over and go after Trump and his imps. Sigh.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It is up to us to fix this country. Schneiderman and Mueller had and have particular roles to play, albeit more than the average person, but even if they win their part, it won’t fix anything. Some of the right people will get charged, which is very useful, but the only way we’re going to fix what is going wrong is to vote Republicans out of office and keep them out of office.
Preet Bharara’s name is being dropped to replace Schneiderman. That’s not official.
I’m pissed about Schneiderman, of course. But his staff will keep doing what they do. His replacement will be a Democrat. Whatever investigations are going on won’t stop.
That IS the rule of law in action, and my state still has a functioning government. Schneiderman resigning won’t change any of those facts.

Chief Deputy AG:
Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. serves as Chief Deputy Attorney General. Mr. Bragg previously served as Executive Deputy Attorney General for Social Justice, and was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office in New York’s Southern District, where he investigated and prosecuted misconduct by elected officials and law enforcement, money laundering of narcotics proceeds, bank fraud, witness tampering, and fraud relating to government contracts. Mr. Bragg also served as the Chief of Litigation and Investigations at the New York City Council and was in private practice at the firm now known as Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello P.C. Immediately after law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Robert P. Patterson, Jr., U.S. District Judge, Southern District of New York. Mr. Bragg received his A.B. from Harvard University, cum laude, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School.
I personally think we’re in a cold civil war right now, especially with 40% of the county either hoping we get a fascists-religious state or not caring if we do. I think we’re going to win ultimately, but we’re going to have setbacks. And, like in any war, sometimes people on your side do something that requires you to remove them from their job (think MacArthur and Korea). But there’s more than just that one person.

I think Schneiderman did the only right thing there was to do. You really can’t read the reporting Mayer and Farrow did and see much room to think he’s innocent. It’s very different from the anonymous, questionable allegations against Franken - and Schneiderman’s near-immediate resignation tells me he knew it, too.
And it doesn’t for one second change the fact that the Republicans have someone at the top of their heap nationally who’s verifiably done all of these things and much worse, and yet they keep enabling him to stay in office.

Plus I thought Gambino was evoking slavery by being shirtless and at first glance, appearing barefoot. I think that was brought home by the end scene of Gambino running away from blurred pursuers.

Good art does not have to have one meaning. It can mean different things to different people.
The artist may have one idea in mind when he created it, but then again he may even have wanted it to be open enough to illicit all kinds of thinking.
The fact he is getting this much buzz over that video is pretty cool. Since we are all debating the meaning is great. I think he did his job. Very well. After seeing him on SNL, he is a great singer and actor/comedian. He’s got a hell of a future. And he’s cool.

Maybe, but Schneiderman doesn’t deny slapping women around. He just claims it was consensual. I’m sure there are women out there who’d be OK with it because there’s always someone who consents to stuff, no matter how weird, but I’m guessing however much he consented, not all the women did.

I missed today’s game and haven’t looked at any analysis or stats yet, but good to hear his teammates finally stepped up. There was no way he could keep carrying them like that. His stats and minutes played at this point in his career is just astounding!!!

I don’t know who is more right in this particular case.
And honestly I vacillate between both of these views generally with regard to our Democracy under fire. I understand both vantage points here. Both are probably necessary.[Embedded content]
I only hate it when people opt out or don’t speak of the fight ahead as if they are part of it or maintain unbalanced and extreme cynicism. Speaking of what the Dems need to do instead of what WE need to do or thinking that there’s nothing we can do when there is plenty, really gets my goat.
I don’t think Trump thinks that deep. I think he just believes the rules don’t apply to him, and that’s why he gets angry when Mueller gets to someone around him.

We are having a great time in Toronto!
First, we stopped on the way at the London Dairy Farm where my son works part time as a mashgiach (kosher supervisor) watching the cows get milked.

Eh, I don’t know. Unlike Franken, this news isn’t being driven by a few women who appear almost exclusively on FOX and then immediately disappear. It also appears to involve actual assault and real abuse, as opposed to a childish photo. I also doubt Roger Stone has much pull with a couple of well-regarded New Yorker reporters. Schneiderman seems like an abusive alcoholic with sexual dominance issues, and good riddance.

The big problem with Schneiderman’s resignation is not that it takes a powerful ally off the field, but rather that it will help the White House continue to push their “WITCH HUNT!!!!” narrative, insisting that the men investigating Trump and his close friends/business partners are bad actors who themselves are truly the corrupt members of “the swamp.” That the investigations are an effort to cover up real crimes by those men or their associates and in the process remove a duly-elected president from office.
While I don’t believe that the accusations are falsified, I do believe that someone may have let the White House know days in advance that this story was close to publication and that’s why they felt overly confident that their “salvation” lay in the courts.
re: #12 Belafon
I personally think we’re in a cold civil war right now, especially with 40% of the county either hoping we get a fascists-religious state or not caring if we do. I think we’re going to win ultimately, but we’re going to have setbacks. And, like in any war, sometimes people on your side do something that requires you to remove them from their job (think MacArthur and Korea). But there’s more than just that one person.
Most of American history could be described as a cold civil war. We typically don’t think of history as dynamic events and competing parties/ideologies, but through out our history we have had nasty politics. It typically revolved around race generally, and ensuring that all people had the protections of the constitution and the promises of the declaration.

Nah, I think the “salvation” in the courts bit was because they thought the judge in the Manafort case was going to dismiss everything after the hearing the other day. But that’s likely not going to happen.

We will come to a point where people with guns will seek to impede the due process of law, as the folks with guns will not recognize the rule of law and brand it an anti-government coup.

As I was telling a wingnut earlier today, best case scenario for Manafort is that Mueller drops the charges…and the EDVA US Attorney immediately impanels a grand jury to file them there. The only other “good” scenario is that the case goes forward under Mueller, but the judge puts his views about the reach of his investigatory power on paper. It’ll give the wingnuts tingles in their nether regions that Mueller had his hand “slapped” by a judge, but it will mean Manafort is still stuck deciding between dying in prison or rolling on Don Trump.

Eric was a deeply flawed human being and he is rightly off the chessboard. So be it.
Am I pissed off? Yes.
Does this really change anything? No. His immediate removal means that there will be a day of bark bark bark from Faux News and then it will disappear because Drumpf will tweet some other stupidity and blow it away. His team is intact and they will move forward. That is the nature of a modern competent bureaucracy. The foot soldiers do the work and the removal of the top dog does not destroy the organization.
Tomorrow, the rest of the team is going to push even harder.

He has to take it into consideration during his planning. There has been some talk of him having to “go dark” during the elections to avoid the impression of influencing the outcome, so I am sure he has planned to deal with that. I certainly hope not! The spin on that concept will be the R’s primary focus in the elections. The sooner he pulls the trigger, the better.
IMHO, the focus at this point should be the money laundering of Trump Inc. Everybody knows that DJT Jr. is on the record as saying that “a lot of our funding to run the company has come from Russia”.
That’s a dead bang admission that their cash flow is dependent on funneling cash through real estate deals.
If Mueller is following the money (and in RICO cases, you always follow the money), then this is the chink in the Trump, Inc. armor. No one else was was fronting them money because of his past bankruptcies. US and European banks wouldn’t touch him.
The only source of fluid cash was Russian and ex-SSR Kleptocracies.
And I’m off for the rack. Night all.

People in the comments counted 240 or 269 cars. Let’s say it’s 250 cars. At 55’ length for each car, that is 13,750 feet plus (extra for the linkages and some slightly longer double height cars.)

Rail traffic is a major pain in the ass in the Middle Rhine valley. It is a major north-south axis but is very narrow in many places, with tracks running right through or directly past towns and settlements. And the narrow valley acts as a megaphone, reflecting and amplifying the sound.
Container barges can carry up to 128 containers or 256 for a double barge. One container per 10 m rail car can replace 2.56 km worth of train. Only problem is their relatively slow speed.

Many, many years ago (when I was a child), I rode in a caboose from Port Angeles to Port Townsend in Washington state. It was kind of cool at first, but then it got boring, as I recall.

How about old enough to see a steam train. When I was in elementary school there were train tracks adjacent to the school playground. Of course, at that time, there were no safety fences. Steam locomotives used that section of track. Just being kids, when we heard a train coming, we would rush out and put pennies on the tracks to be crushed. Somewhere I still have one of these pennies.
Childhood was so much fun in those days.
I live between two railroad tracks. To be fair, the one that goes through the Kent Transit Center is mainly for the Sounder passenger train, very few freight trains like this, but that means all the freight trains go on the track about 200’ away. Some of them seem about as long as this. Plus they’re mostly slowing down to unload at all the warehouses in town here, so they take forever—and their whistles are blowing the whole time.

As the interlocutors of the newspaper note, almost half of the closed shopping centers are small objects built or reconstructed in the 1990s.
The damage from the suspension of the work of shopping ployshadey [I think it failed to translate “shopping centers” properly] can exceed half a billion rubles a month. These figures are the sources of the newspaper.
In some regions, for example, in the Khabarovsk Territory, entrepreneurs plan to hold protests in connection with the actions of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
March 25 in the “Winter Cherry” was a major fire, which killed 64 people, including 41 children. According to eyewitnesses, the alarm did not work, some people were cut off from the fire and tried to get out of the shopping center through the windows.
After the tragedy in the Ministry of Emergency Situations they said that they would check all Russian shopping centers, and Rosgvardia intends to inspect five thousand private security companies (PPCs).
According to the data for mid-April, in the middle of objects with mass prebyvaeniem [perhaps this is supposed to be “occupancy”] people in Russia found violations of fire safety requirements.

our big challenge was getting over a railroad bridge on the Chicago South Shore Line…the train was very fast and there was very little room on either side of the bridge had it come along while we were attempting to cross it.
That was a major test of courage…the bridge itself led to an abandoned Nike missile base that we used to vandalize.

Bret Weinstein’s take on religion and fitness may not garner him many fans, but I think it is an idea that is worth the ponder:
I am anti-clerical, not anti-religious.
But if I were anti-religious, I would be a mean-ass Machiavellian and support an established Church, because that is the very thing that kills true faith.
The Duggar family is the most well known American family where their religious beliefs are improving the families fitness in an evolutionary sense.
It’s one of the great ironies of the universe.
BTW, the Duggar baby-factories are up to 10 grandchildren “and counting”, as they say.

“Fitness” is different for a human in the modern world than for a crinoid in the Ordovician period. For every Duggar who gets a TV show, there are a million offspring of these quiverfull maniacs who’ll wind up on welfare and paying no taxes, while whining about “their taxes” going to “welfare queens” in the blue states that subsidize them, and voting for politicians who want to eliminate welfare. One can only hope that this is not a sustainable evolutionary strategy.
So far, they have ten “grand-Duggars” — with at least two more currently on the way. In the past, the Counting On patriarch has even gone so far as to say that he hopes that — one day — he has 200 grandchildren to call his own! And, well, if they keep up the pace, they’ll be there in no time! Get to know all of the Duggar grandkids below:

When a single male dominates a population, the effective population size, in the way population geneticists think of that phrase, goes down, as many other males don’t get to reproduce, and their rarest ancestors can then go completely extinct in the population.
Eventually a species may run into a problem of lack of diversity.
We humans are a long way off from that.

The Duggar clan may be able to overtake the Saudis only if the latter start restricting births (such as what China did for a couple of decades.) If Saudi Arabia ever modernizes and women get the power to determine their own fate, then birth rates will go down and the growth of descendants of Ibn will slow down. If parallel to that America returns to its religious patriarchal roots, the Duggars may catch up.
However, the cheetah genetic bottleneck is very likely the end for them; in fact, it is the general end times for all the big cats. A Duggar bottle neck will just increase the amount of dumbassery in the general population.

That has been given as a reason for the decline of the dinosaurs: lack of genetic diversity. Face it, for the same 10 tons of biomass you get two brontosaurus or 2,000,000 proto-mammals.
Genetic tests on remains of the last surviving mammoths show that they were so inbred that they no longer had a functional sense of smell.

From Wiki.
Parasite response
It seems that brown-headed cowbirds periodically check on their eggs and young after they have deposited them. Removal of the parasitic egg may trigger a retaliatory reaction termed “mafia behavior”. According to a study by the Florida Museum of Natural History published in 1983, the cowbird returned to ransack the nests of a range of host species 56% of the time when their egg was removed.

I’m fortunate as i only see a few here every year to the benefit of the local populations. I also take out english house sparrows. Don’t see many of them either, but with the encroachment of Cedar Park and it’s subdivisions, those and the enveriable grackles will become a reality.

I am anti-clerical, not anti-religious.
But if I were anti-religious, I would be a mean-ass Machiavellian and support an established Church, because that is the very thing that kills true faith.
It depends on how you define the “Church”. If you’re referring simply to the bureaucracy of, say, The Vatican or Canterbury? I could probably agree. But if you mean the people who are in the parishes trying to do what is right and good? I’ve been a member of three different parishes in my life and can say all three well and truly try to live by the gospel.

I hear a lot of talk about whom to replace Schneiderman with, how about we get some justice for the victims first, and get his pension to boot.
In a release on Monday, Senate leaders said the legislation will amend the state constitution to “reduce or revoke the pension of a public officer that has been convicted of a felony related to his or her official duties.”
“The Assembly Majority believes that public officials who violate the public’s trust and engage in corruption should face the consequences of their actions including the forfeiture of taxpayer funded pensions,” said Speaker Carl Heastie in a release.
Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said, “The measure will go to the voters so that they can have the opportunity to join with us in taking a strong stand against corruption.”
According to Senate leaders, the legislation will allow public officials to lose their pension, or have it reduced, following a court hearing. According to leaders, the court will consider the severity of the offense when determining the loss of pension.

I mean large religious organizations, especially when they get embroiled in politics.
That is what I mean by being anti-clerical but not anti-religious. I am not among the Christian faithful but I respect those people who truly live and witness it and do not just preach and posture.
Heck, we even took part in putting on the local kiddie Christmas presentation at our village chapel although we were not members of the church, I found it was all in keeping with a sense of community.

But still fiction.
Because germs.
Diseases evolve parallel with populations they infect, the hosts developing resistance while the germs find new ways to attack.
Introduce a creature from millions of years ago to contemporary germs and they will be infected with diseases to which they have to resistance. Look what smallpox germs did to humans after only a few thousand years of separation when re-introduced.

The closest thing to a phone book for the I.D.W. is a sleek website that lists the dramatis personae of the network, including Mr. [Sam] Harris; Mr. Weinstein and his brother and sister-in-law, the evolutionary biologists Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying; Jordan Peterson, the psychologist and best-selling author; the conservative commentators Ben Shapiro and Douglas Murray; Maajid Nawaz, the former Islamist turned anti-extremist activist; and the feminists Ayaan Hirsi Ali [also anti-Islamacist] and Christina Hoff Sommers.
All this gang needs is Milo, Rage Furby, and George Zimmerman to round out the crew.
re: #290 Sir John Barron
Let’s see, we have Harris, Shapiro, Murray, Nawaz and Ali, five anti-Muslim commentators in this small privileged enclave of oppressed intellectual provocateurs.
I also can’t get over the listing of Ali and Sommers as “feminists”.
I’d say Ali qualifies as “feminist” in the broad sense, though she only ever attacks the Islamic patriarchy.
I had forgotten we were voting for State Issue 1 today. I had thought that would be in November. Issue 1 is the not-so-great, but better-than-nothing legislation to change how Congressional districts are drawn to ‘prevent’ gerrymandering.
Issue 1
To amend the version of Section 1 of Article XI that is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2021, and to enact Sections 1, 2, and 3 of Article XIX of the Constitution of the State of Ohio to establish a process for congressional redistricting.
A majority yes vote is necessary for the amendment to pass. The proposed amendment would:
- End the partisan process for drawing congressional districts, and replace it with a process with the goals of promoting bipartisanship, keeping local communities together, and having district boundaries that are more compact.
- Ensure a transparent process by requiring public hearings and allowing public submission of proposed plans.
- Require the General Assembly or the Ohio Redistricting Commission to adopt new congressional districts by a bipartisan vote for the plan to be effective for the full 10-year period.
- Require that if a plan is adopted by the General Assembly without significant bipartisan support, it cannot be effective for the entire 10-year period and must comply with explicit antigerrymandering requirements. If passed, the amendment will become effective immediately.
Here are a couple criticisms (from Ballotpedia)
Mike Brickner, senior policy director at the ACLU of Ohio, said the organization neither supported nor opposed Issue 1. Brickner did offer a critique of Issue 1, saying:
In the event that bipartisan compromise cannot be reached, the rules allow for more power to be wielded by the majority party. The moment we codify methods which allow one party - the majority party - to make the rules, we lose any chance of fair and just representation. We applaud the parts of the initiative which ensure public oversight and community input, but the process could easily disintegrate back to a wholly partisan power grab, which is never in the voter’s best interest.
Stephen Wolf, an elections staff writer for the progressive website Daily Kos, stated:
Eliminating gerrymandering doesn’t just require ending one party’s unilateral control over the process, as much as that helps. Who gets to draw the lines and the criteria that guide those mapmakers is also of tremendous importance. In a vacuum, this compromise proposal is better than the status quo of GOP legislators having total control over the process. But we aren’t in a vacuum. Republican legislators shrewdly accepted that momentum was building against partisan gerrymandering, and this compromise is quite simply a way to blunt that momentum while preserving as much of their advantage as possible under a false veneer of bipartisanship.

I would have no problem voting for Preet Bharara (or Hillary) as my state’s NY AG.
Yes, either one would have to recuse themselves personally from overseeing investigations regarding Trump. But that doesn’t mean the office of the AG wouldn’t still conduct an investigation. It would simply be headed by a deputy AG without that conflict of interest. That’s how functioning government works, when it’s functioning. Which it still is here in my state.

Why would anyone in Iran want to attack Israel NOW? Diplomacy-wise, their enemies are busily kicking own-goals (and high-fiving themselves over their excellent style): they are likely to get far better results by making themselves out to be the reasonable ones in the deal, and let Trump keep on making the US into the “rogue nation”.
And I do wonder if anyone in the Admin has really thought out the ramifications of pulling out of the JCPOA, outside of the cheap publicity and tough-talk rah-rah from the Deplorables, of course? The international sanctions regime only worked because a bunch of other world players (like China) went along with it. As long as Iran actually does comply (or, seem to comply) with the inspections, etc. and don’t actually set off any nukes, Trump’s new set of sanctions are, in effect, only going to affect the US. Except, of course, if the G is going to try to make complying with those sanctions a condition of trade with anybody else - in which case, yet again, as with his tariff scheme, Trump and his crew are going to seriously fuck up this country’s economy: all in the name of “better deals”, naturally…..
re: #389 JordanRules

That is pretty much what Pat Buchannan was saying:
Iran is making no demands on the United States. Its patrol boats have ceased harassing our warships in the Persian Gulf. Its forces in Iraq and Syria do not interfere with our operations against ISIS. And, according to U.N. inspectors, Iran is abiding by the terms of the nuclear deal.
Iran has never tested a nuclear device and never enriched uranium to weapons grade. Under the deal, Iran has surrendered 95 percent of its uranium, shut down most of its centrifuges and allowed cameras and inspectors into all of its nuclear facilities.
This has Bolton’s war hungry mustache prints all over it.

re: #390 Jay C
Why would anyone in Iran want to attack Israel NOW? Diplomacy-wise, their enemies are busily kicking own-goals (and high-fiving themselves over their excellent style): they are likely to get far better results by making themselves out to be the reasonable ones in the deal, and let Trump keep on making the US into the “rogue nation”.
…..
Maybe it is just being done to justify violating the deal. Put out a scare as proof that Iran has been wanting to attack all along.
Good thread!
You may have forgotten this moment from 2015: Amid debate on the Iran nuclear deal, the president of the leading lobby group opposed to the deal, Gary Samore, suddenly resigned. His reason: he actually read the deal and decided to publicly support it.

Since the US is only one of several countries in the Iran thing the agreement is still in force isn’t it? New sanctions from US means what exactly? Just that we’re assholes who can be ignored?
very likely yes
iran will figure out if they can live with just us being assholes
if our allies cave, then iran probably fast starts their nuclear program again

I’d be shocked if he’s read it. Hell I’d be shocked if Trump knows anything about Iran that Fox and Friends haven’t told him.

And the GPO can tell its base that it withdrew from the “really bad deal” and isn’t cooperating with Iran, etc.

Guess it depends on the nature of the sanctions being imposed or reimposed.

He knows that Iran is a country in Africa, which is a shithole country. What else does he need to know?

Except that Israeli “scares” about Iran - and never mind the general absence of “proof” - have been a staple tactic of theirs for years. And have generally had little effect outside the RW media bubble, except to make said claims even less-credible every time they fail to pan out.

Give him a nice, big world globe and ask him to point out where Iran is when they hurt him.

Nope and that applies to any policy as JR just said.

It’s very bad okay. Obama and Kerry aren’t as smart as me. I’m going to build a golf course in Iran and it will be great.
There’s uninformed and then there’s Trump. An uninformed person wants to know more. Trump thinks he knows more even though he doesn’t know jackshit about Iran or anything other than being a pompous gasbag.
Watching Scaramucci this morning on MSNBC pretend he was smarter about international politics than Michael McFaul was a sort of head-exploding encapsulation of the Trump camp’s treatment of the Iran agreement. They’re wrong on the facts, and they won’t listen to any suggestion they can’t be right, but emotionally defend their ignorance.
re: #384 Belafon
I’ll bet anyone $5 that, within the next 48 hours, Putin denounces the sanctions and offers help to Iran.
Wait What? I thought that was the plan all along….
So where the fuck was Facebook in 2016?
Ireland abortion poll: Facebook to block foreign ads
Facebook has said it will block ads relating to Ireland’s forthcoming referendum on abortion that do not originate from advertisers inside the country.
There had been worries in Ireland that foreign ads could influence the result of the vote.
Facebook has not applied such a policy to British elections or referendums.

There are people who look at modern Russia as a model state: authoritarian, oligarchic, patriarchal, homophobic, xenopobic and theocratic. Only difference is that they prefer fundamentalist Protestantism over Russian Orthodoxy

This describes every conservative I interact with on the Internet.
Diplomats & Analysts on #IranDeal:#Iran, #EU, #Russia & #China will pursue a quiet diplomatic track to save the deal. If that doesn’t work legal provisions against US for violating agreement will go in motion.

What have they got besides The central bank and other Iranian businesses?
Blockades?
Interrupting trade with other nations?
Embargoes?

Seriously. The rest of the world is leaving us in the rearview thanks to Trump.
re: #425 jaunte
Google Trans says.
In his speech today, Rohani suggested that Iran could remain in the nuclear deal, despite a likely exit from Washington, “if Europe fulfills all our expectations under the agreement and we are get rid of Trump, otherwise we will get out of the deal. “
Diplomatically, Trump is the business genius who reduced his banking options from all the banks in the world down to Deutsche Bank and the Russian Mafia.
re: #428 dangerman

Right. During the entire campaign he kept claiming to know the deal better than anyone and “let me tell you” and do those fucking karate chops and jazz hands moves and no one ever called him on it. Does anyone seriously think he’s read a single sentence of the deal or even about it?

The only thing Trump reads is the Teleprompter when he is forced to read a prepared speech. Other than that, he reads nothing. So of course he didn’t read the deal and if someone tried to explain it to him, he would ignore the person entirely. He wants only short bullet point statements of one syllable words that fit on a single page, in really large type,

Some weasel from the WH legislative office was on NPR this morning and Innskeep asked him that exact question. It turns out that we won’t be breaking our word because Iran already broke it by mumble, mumble and it’s obviously such a poorly negotiated deal that no one can fault the US for reneging.
Oh, except everyone, but they’re wrong and USA USA. Or, something.
