Last session, the Texas Legislature failed to pass a bill that would’ve lowered the standards for for-profit “baby jails” and allowed kids to be held for extended periods, but apparently the Trump administration found a work-aroundhttps://t.co/v0ApBFbLKA https://t.co/Fxcy7U94p8

“…Family detention centers are used by the federal government to hold mothers and children seeking asylum, often fleeing violence in Central America. Two of the nation’s three facilities are in Texas and together can hold about 3,200 detainees.
The Texas Pediatric Society has said the facilities cause depression and anxiety and can impede development in children.
Federal courts have held that children may only be detained for prolonged periods of time in “licensed, nonsecure facilities.” The rulings limited family detention centers to holding children for a few weeks at a time. By creating a process to license the centers as childcare facilities, the bill would have let the prison companies detain families for the duration of their cases — months in most instances.”

A Communist note. Sergey always pointed out that the Communists were among the most xenophobic he encountered in his homeland. Yet another reason why I don’t think “ending capitalism” is the answer.
You can cure class inequality but it will mean nothing if people resent their neighbors for looking different than they do. That’s why I’ve never been a doctrinaire socialist even if I have problems with capitalism, I have bigger problems with ignoring racism or even being okay with it.
The entire GOP has drank the kool aid where they think making multiple concessions that undermine US national security while getting no concessions from North Korea is a good thing.

Yes it is. It might be just enough for Trump to retain his grip in Congress. We need momentum for 2020.
Skeptic Magazine pilloried Christian religious groups and individuals over Anthony Bourdain’s death.
Among the more obnoxious things I’ve read in the wake of Anthony Bourdain’s death is that if only he had been a man of faith, he wouldn’t have taken his own life. Consider the almost sneering commentary offered by Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, in a syndicated piece written less than a day after the rogue chef’s body was found hanging by the belt of his bathrobe in a Strasbourg hotel room. “If Anthony Bourdain had been a religious man, would he have killed himself? Probably not,” writes Donohue. “Bourdain was raised by his Catholic father and Jewish mother, though neither of them saw fit to raise him any religion … [Bourdain] said his views of religion were similar to those expressed by Christopher Hitchens, the British atheist. This is why the atheist organization, Freedom from Religion, was so proud of him.”
Not only is the tenor of Donohue’s sentiment completely tone-deaf and insensitive, his claim that Bourdain—or, for that matter, any other atheist suicide victim—could have been saved by religion is presumptuous and misleading. In his unabashed efforts to show why Catholicism is superior to other religions (he touts his book The Catholic Advantage while writing about Bourdain’s suicide), Donahue points out that regular churchgoers are less likely to kill themselves. He’s right. But it turns out it’s a little more complicated than Donahue would have us believe. The church buffering effect against suicide that he’s alluding to, in fact, has almost nothing to do with faith. Rather, the correlation comes from churchgoers being part of an active community, one with formal rituals encouraging social engagement and regulated moral support. It’s what’s known as the “network theory” of religion and suicide, first articulated by Émile Durkheim in the late 19th century. In his famous treatise Suicide (1897), Durkheim reported that, despite their matched religiosity, Protestants were more likely to take their own lives than Catholics, a puzzling observation given that suicide is proscribed in both forms of Christianity. But Protestants are permitted free inquiry, have fewer formal rituals, and are characterized by more permeable groups.
This general trend—that it is church attendance, not simply religion, that protects people against suicide—has been found in study after study ever since. So, when Donahue writes that “those who are regular churchgoers have a much lower rate of suicide than atheists like Bourdain,” he’s conflating (and I suspect deliberately so) religious behavior and theism.
When it comes to suicide, the existence or nonexistence of God, or belief therein, is far less consequential than the tumult of our social lives. (more, with a link to Donahoe’s hot take)

See also: Donohoe is a divorced Catholic.
Further down in that article one finds this nugget:
There’s another, more inconvenient, statistic that Donohue fails to mention, which is that devout people who experience religious strain—for instance, because they’re convinced that they’ve committed a sin too major to be forgiven—are actually more likely than their nonreligious peers to take their own lives. Feeling alienated from God, such religious individuals are at a heightened risk of behaviorally accelerating His wrathful sentence. Over the centuries, propagators of every Christian denomination, and most other world religions as well, have admonished their followers that anyone so foolish as to die by their own hand will suffer in Hell eternally. But if you see yourself as having done something so unforgivable that you’re going to Hell anyway, that’s not much of a preventative.

Of note from last night’s primary in Nevada:
- Democrat Jackie Rosen got 110,530 votes
- GOP incumbent Dean Heller got 99,472 votes
I think 110,530 is bigger than 99,472. And that’s just the primary. Add in November enthusiasm on the left and…
Bye bye, Dean Heller.— Nick Knudsen 🇺🇸 (@DemWrite) June 14, 2018

At this point, it’s way, way too late to save America. If you can get your family out, you need to. If you can help get your friends out, too, so much the better. If you can help vulnerable people or anyone else who’ll be targeted (artists, scientists, dissidents of all kinds), that’s great, too.
I agree on most. but beg to retain the right to a quick transition in any panel. Sometimes you want *just* that jarring change, either for humor’s sake or dramatic suspense’s. Note that you may see the first of a new scene just before a TV show’s ad break, forex.

The coverage was terrible, but I think that the press just could not understand the full depth of Trump’s evil nor that of the deplorables who make up much of his base. I’m not sure that they comprehend it to this day.
How can one explain how complicit the Republicans are in this evil? Is it just that they don’t understand either? Or are they all morphing into full-blown Nazis before our eyes?

The issue is conservatives. They’ve courted it all my life. I have never witnessed a Republican Party that didn’t support racism.
Some will ignore it (except when courting votes), some will try to claim both-siderism, but no Republican politician doesn’t understand, not in my nearly sixty years.
The only thing they’re upset about is Trump stripping their dog whistles and running out in the open on what they also ran on in coded language.
By doing that, it exposes the whole GOP for what they really have been for the past sixty years: The party of Jim Crow, the party of apartheid, the party of racism.
Some of their voters may not understand it (buying the lines of “family values” or “fiscal conservatism”) but not the politicians. Steve King of Iowa was in office long before Trump. So was Jesse Helms.
They took the Wallace voters in willingly (those who did not become part of the National Alliance - by the way, they’re Nazis). They took the Klan and the John Birch Society in willingly under Goldwater.
They knew exactly what they were doing.
And since they also want to strip citizenship from anyone born to non-citizens, watch as they charge dead people with crimes and deport their *US-born descendants*. You cannot say you did #NaziThatComing next.

My grandparents came here in violation of the 1924 Immigration Act. The logical conclusion of deporting people who came unlawfully and stripping their descendants of citizenship includes me.

I’m not trying to discount anyone’s fears but a lot of the ‘well, they will be coming after white folks too’ feels really similar to the same kind of decentering tactics people of color and other marginalized groups have to constantly battle against to get the kind of anti-racist literacy and attention that is required to fight against this system that is literally built on white supremacy. As soon as America started using social media as a source of news, people like Breitbart and Drudge started figuring how to float stories that would get picked up and treated as if they had any merit and soon be reported on by the mainstream media.
Because it is a lot cheaper to have an unpaid intern to monitor FB and Twitter than it is to pay reporters to look into what is actually happening out there.

You don’t have to even be gay, someone only needs to think you are.
I recall a comment in a discussion with a conservative at Alternet a couple years ago. As I disassembled his talking points one-by-one, he finally ended with “You write like you’re gay.”
It’s been suggested to me I might be gay because my penmanship is very close to bookhand-perfect. (Or the lesser version, “You write like a girl” I get around here.)

….I’ve always seen the definition of who is white expand, not contract in this country.
I’m continually flabbergasted by the shrinkage of acceptably “white” ethnicities. I grew up in the 50s and 60s in what I’m sure would be considered a lily-white suburb. Now I know every racist says something like this—but we’re all friends here, right?—I went to school with kids of every conceivable nationality on earth except African American, and looking back now, I know a huge fraction of those kids are not “white” any more…. It’s really discouraging.

My mother moved us out of Maryland when I went to school because my public school was segregated (well after the Brown decision).
To this day I am “Polack” to plenty of people, even people I’ve never met who first come across my last name. I imagine in that person’s mind, “Polack” doesn’t equate to “white.”
Posing a question to my wife just now, she says “you don’t look white to me.”

My mom was a widow and could not afford to join the White Flight when our neighborhood in Gary, Indiana flipped in the late 60’s…I grew up with hillbillies, Latinos and Blacks and went to a school where there were no more than a few dozen white kids left.
And one thing I got from what I read of Hillbilly Elegy (I never finished it) is that the Hillbillies who came to live in our neighborhood were pretty much an ethnic group all of their own, racially white but different than the other Eastern European or Anglo-European whites who lived there.

Very interesting. I wonder how that changes by region. I’ve seen mostly the opposite here where folks like the Parkland shooter can even “pass”. Passing of course has an incredibly fascinating history.

If the Crazification Factor is 27% and you get a 50% turnout, that makes 54% for them—because they always vote. And 50% turnout would be very high in a primary election. That’s how we got where we are today.

Please fix your syntax. I’m sure you mean “20 percent of credentialed film critics at the festivals will be PoC”, which is still underrepresentation vs. English-world demo as a whole, but it comes off as if you’re credentialing 20 percent of all PoC film critics in the world 👿

That was the GOP strategy that put them over the top in 2016; They knew that Hillary was not going to motivate a lot of people to vote. They knew they could count on their 30% base to get to the polls, and just needed to get another 20% of voters to hate Hillary enough to go along.
And they knew that they just had to carry the states they carried in 2012 (no problem wit that) and concentrate their efforts on the Rust Belt: OH, PA, MI and WI.
That gave them the Electoral votes they needed without needing Florida.
I hate to say it, but Michael Moore had that figured out in the summer of 2016. I ignored him at the time as I always found him a bit of a gadfly, but he was spot-on with that analysis and prediction.

The social and cultural “center” is a lot more liberal and inclusive than the political “center”. That has to do with gerrymandering of House seats and the fact that less densely populous states are over-represented in the Senate.
Remember, as with the Presidential elections, if you count overall Democratic vs GOP votes at a national level, there should be a Democratic majority in Congress.

The Conservative Party is in power in the United Kingdom.
Conservatism is about gaining and maintaining power regardless of the nation.
The party could say to the referendum, “This is bad for our nation. We won’t implement it.”
No Conservatives are saying that. They want to hold on to their seats in Parliament, and could not care less if the UK economy is damaged.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my life and livelihood to be totally subject to whether the guy down at the corner store is a bigot or not. Prolly under 10% of employers would DADT or worse their workplace, and I’m sure under 20% of retail and restaurant providers would refuse service to Black people, if the political centre were reflected in that it was legal to discriminate and to be disability-inaccessible again. The problem is, only the minorities of the majority could succeed in actually discriminating. The Black woman owning the Big and Tall shop can’t afford to refuse the patronage of even someone who, it got back to her via the grapevine, is in the local Klavern. But she’s lost access to two supermarkets and 10% of the nice restaurants she was used to patronising herself.
And worse yet, bigots overbreed. If they’re legally free to be bigoted again, people will be raising their children to make even the sociocultural centre being-so-far-left, a short-term aberration.

Kids in these U.S. hot spots at higher risk because parents opt out of vaccinations
Public health officials have long known that the United States has pockets of vulnerability where the risk of measles and other vaccine-preventable childhood diseases is higher because parents hesitate or refuse to get their children immunized.
Eighteen states allow parents to opt their children out of school immunization requirements for nonmedical reasons, with exemptions for religious or philosophical beliefs. And in two-thirds of those states, a comprehensive new analysis finds a rising number of kindergartners who have not been vaccinated.
In a report published Tuesday in PLOS Medicine, researchers from several Texas academic centers tracked the increasing number of children with exemptions in all 18 states from the 2009-2010 to 2016-2017 school years. They characterized many rural counties, as well as urban areas, as “hotspots” because their high exemption rates put them at risk for epidemics of measles, whooping cough and other pediatric infectious diseases.

I put my three kids in (> average). Grandma Babushka has definitely done her part. How’s everyone else doing?

Trump surrounded himself with complicit criminal cronies.
Manafort - campaign chair/manager: indicted
Gates - campaign manager: indicted
Flynn - military/foreign policy adviser, transition chair, Trump’s National Security Adviser: guilty plea
Papadopoulos - foreign policy adviser: indicted
Next up:
Cohen: Trump’s personal lawyer
Kushner: the son in law
Junior: dumbass in waiting
Ivanka: complicit (and Eric’s starting to look like the smart one in all this)
But yeah, let’s talk about Hillary’s emails and how she damaged security all while Trump tweets/uses an unsecured phone that is likely tracked/hacked. Or that Trump continues to mishandle classified info and enables those around him to do the same.
Or that Pence used a private email to do government business.

War games are expensive? So too is a military that spends more per year than the next 10 countries combined (and that includes spending several times more than Russia and China and Iran and North Korea combined).
The military is expensive, but you signed into law a massive spending hike for the military. Didn’t see you bitching about that. Military exercises are how the military prepares for potential future conflicts. It’s what they do. They need to do those to make sure they are ready if and when called upon.

I’m so sick of that red pill bs. I’m sure the Wachowskis didn’t intend for their movie to be used by a bunch of overgrown manchildren to put down people. I haven’t seen The Matrix but the way I see that pill stuff is that they were talking about seeing the world beyond yourself. Maybe I’m wrong.
Saw it when it came out, didn’t like it, don’t remember it very well, and much preferred The Thirteenth Floor which came out the same year. Both movies involved living in a computer-simulation, where the inhabitants thought they were in the real world and not the simulation. In any case, red pill had nothing to do with its appropriation by women-haters.

re: #303 lawhawk
War games are expensive? So too is a military that spends more per year than the next 10 countries combined (and that includes spending several times more than Russia and China and Iran and North Korea combined).
The military is expensive, but you signed into law a massive spending hike for the military. Didn’t see you bitching about that. Military exercises are how the military prepares for potential future conflicts. It’s what they do. They need to do those to make sure they are ready if and when called upon.
Flying long distance missions is what the USAF does. It’s how we’ve done it for decades. The two gulf wars included long duration missions with flights starting from bases within the US and ending over Iraq. We had missions in Afghanistan launched from the US as well. Only a know nothing like Trump would make this argument.
Only know nothing supporters like Trumpworld would believe this claptrap - and that’s why he keeps repeating this nonsense.
all true, plus:
- absolutely no one knows specifically how much the joint South Korean-American training exercises cost
- SK pays pays half of the cost of having American troops there
most important:
- one way or another troops still will be trained. if not in this “exercise” then on a different day.
there is no ‘cost savings’
re: #318 Hecuba’s daughter
Saw it when it came out, didn’t like it, don’t remember it very well, and much preferred The Thirteenth Floor which came out the same year. Both movies involved living in a computer-simulation, where the inhabitants thought they were in the real world and not the simulation. In any case, red pill had nothing to do with its appropriation by women-haters.
I saw some of it in 1999 and thought that it was a well done movie but it didn’t capture my interest at all. I mean film love is subjective but I’m more about plot and character development.

To each is own. I was way more blown away by The Matrix than The Thirteenth Floor. I liked them both, but then again, I’d already contemplated the idea that we could be a simulation. The idea of being forced into a simulation to be used as batteries was way more radical. Plus, the idea that the simulation was a crappy existence rather than a utopia because we couldn’t accept paradise was a pretty good description of humanity (not to mention the idea that we’re parasites).
I’m not afraid for myself; I’m a transsexual, disabled babyfur in Trump’s America, so I’m going to have an unpleasant death by 2022 anyway if the #BlueTsunami fails. But doxing me is more likely to get my *parents* killed, so I avoid calling that mob down on me.

New York files suit against President Trump, alleging his charity engaged in ‘illegal conduct’The New York attorney general on Thursday filed suit against President Trump and his three eldest children alleging “persistently illegal conduct” at the president’s personal charity, saying Trump repeatedly misused the nonprofit — to pay off his businesses’ creditors, to decorate one of his golf clubs and to stage a multimillion dollar giveaway at his 2016 campaign events.
In the suit, filed Thursday morning, attorney general Barbara Underwood asked a state judge to dissolve the Donald J. Trump Foundation. She asked that its remaining $1 million in assets be distributed to other charities and that Trump be forced to pay at least $2.8 million in restitution and penalties.
Underwood also asks that Trump be banned from leading any other New York nonprofit for 10 years — seeking to apply a penalty usually reserved for the operators of small-time charity frauds to the president of the United States.

Many of my generation from my fatherland, Finland, learned from an early age how to recognize Fascism from miles away, lest we repeat the mistake of choosing as poor an ally we did during WWII. We paid through our noses for having Nazi Germany as an ally, and there’s a reason why the formal state of war between Germany and Finland only ended in 1956.

People were fed up with politicians and politics as usual. Trump campaigned as the anti-politician who promised politics as anything but usual. It allowed him to get away with doing and saying things that would have wrecked the campaign or even the career of any professional politician.
from electoral-vote.com today:
Kim may be venal, but he’s not stupid, and he sees this. As long as he says nice things about how he’s willing to denuclearize, and he makes sure not to ask for direct cash payments, he will be able to extract an arm and a leg from Trump. This is the predictable result of electing a businessman as president

Yeah, there are a few Democrats, but the other party refuses to do anything.
Oh I know man, I just would love to see every last Democrat or Democrat caucus member team up on this and show a true united front. There are immigrants in Heidi’s North Dakota and Joe’s West Virginia. I know we can’t get them on everything but this is one issue where I think an united front would really mean something. Where Chuck Schumer of New York and Heidi Heidencamp of North Dakota, two totally different staets can show unity on an issue would really mean a lot. Don’t get me wrong. I’m rooting for them as much as I am Kaine here in Va but I would love an united front.
re: #536 HappyWarrior
You’ve said this a thousand times. I know that. I’m just saying that I don’t know how millions of people could seriously think Trump was an answer. I needed to lose a lot of weight at one point in my life, it didn’t mean I felt the need to starve myself. You can be fed up with politics as usual and not resort to embracing the worst elements in humanity in a candidate.
Millions thought he was the answer, millions more were convinced that he would be preferable to Hillary or that there would little or no difference.
Another smaller group decided our system is due to collapse anyways so might as well elect Trump to speed up the process so we can start over again from scratch.
And people who feel helpless love the chance to raise a finger at authority and that is what appealed to a lot of voters.
Fucking progress always spoils us. It’s how we got W Bush in 2000 and Nixon in 1968. And yeah I know Vietnam was a volatile time period.

i dont know if she was trying to stir things up as she did or noti am certain, if she had not used that one word, that episode wouldnt have hit anybody’s radar
and worse, that the ‘controversy” was over the use of the word and not the children
You are right, if she hadn’t uttered that word, the press wouldn’t even be talking about the separation of children that she brought up. As is, they only talk about it in the context of “While Bee was trying to raise awareness of what the government was doing to families, she said a naughty word that we’ll report on endlessly.”

None of the GOP candidates in 2016 offered anything but empty bullshit. Trump did it the best. Between that and the expedited coarsening of the GOP in the last 10-12 years (a combination of losing the culture war, the economic disaster of the end of the Bush Administration, and the growing xenophobia of aging white people), a candidate like Trump makes sense. Unfortunately, the GOP doesn’t have the internal mechanics that the Democratic Party has to prevent a disaster nomination like Trump.
As for the general, we’ve had the discussion before, but I think Clinton was simply the perfect foil for him.

It is possible that Biden may have defeated Trump if he had entered the fray but maybe not. He didn’t have Hillary’s liabilities, nor did he have her assets. The media would not have focused on his emails, but they still would have treated Trump with kid gloves. It would have been an entirely different campaign — and voters may still have gone with the “outsider”. Of course, nobody would have been telling a defeated Biden that he should shut up and go away.

One of the major failings of the Obama Era Democratic Party is that they failed to build much of a bench.* Republicans dominated gubernatorial and senate elections, and since that’s where most presidential candidates come from, there just wasn’t anyone available to challenge Clinton in 2016 the way Obama did in 2008.
*I’m not blaming Obama, per se. It was a party wide failure. And that probably includes Jerry Brown deciding he wanted to be governor again in 2010; or Rory Reid in Nevada the same year (I don’t know enough about Nevada politics, but it always felt like they cleared the field for him in a way that never seems to work for Democrats).
