Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were the only two impeached. Nixon certainly would have had he not resigned first.
Tell me that doesn’t read like Trump wrote it. This was the 3rd sentence from Kavanaugh’s 7/9 acceptance address in the White House — third, and that includes “Mr. President, thank you” as one. Kavanaugh is puppeteered by a Kremlin agent who’s also mentally unfit. Disqualifying.

Well, we’ll finally get to hear what kind of noises Republicans make when the shoe is firmly on the other foot. And when we confront them with their hypocrisy, what will they say? In unison now: BENGHAZI!!!!!
I do feel bad for the next Democratic President because the right wing noise machine will attempt to damage and delegitmize them any way possible. We have to be ready for that which is why we need landslides to make the right the minority for a very very long time.

Today WarnerMedia, the parent company of Warner Bros., announced that the company will be taking proactive steps to bring more diversity to their media—in front of and behind the camera. This means that WarnerMedia divisions HBO and Turner Broadcasting will also be a part of this move.
Actor Michael B. Jordan, best known for his role in the movie Black Panther, teamed up with the company to launch a diversity and inclusion initiative. His film Just Mercy, just starting production in Atlanta, will be the first project to use inclusion riders, which are legal provisions placed in contracts that mandate certain diversity and inclusion standards.
This comes on the heels of an announcement from Jordan after the Oscars this year that his company Outlier Society would be using inclusion riders. He said he was inspired by Frances McDormand’s acceptance speech for her award for her leading role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Yeah takes a special amount of delusion to think you’re even close to that.
In a head-scratching interview Thursday, New Mexico’s Republican nominee to represent the state’s 1st Congressional District suggested her Native American opponent isn’t Native American ― because she didn’t grow up on a reservation.
Former state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones took the swipe at Democratic opponent Deb Haaland during an interview on Fox News, reacting to the observation that, if elected, Haaland would be the first Native American woman in Congress.
“Your opponent, she would be the first Native American, as a woman, in Congress,” Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt noted, to which Arnold-Jones replied, “That’s what they say, yes.”
Earhardt, puzzled, asked Arnold-Jones to elaborate: “‘That’s what they say?’ What do you mean by that?”
“Well, there’s no doubt that her lineage is Laguna,” Arnold-Jones said, “but she’s a military brat, just like I am, and so [long pause], you know, it evokes images that she was raised on a reservation. She belongs to a pueblo.”

Nike did it because they could. They provide all of the uniforms and apparel for all 32 teams, and the NFL just renewed their contract for the next eight years back in March.

Oh yeah I know. I still can’t believe they flexed that hard. It is a dying league so I don’t think they are at the height of their power but it was still nice and bold by Nike.
The National Association of Police Officers decided it should come out against Nike’s new campaign. Well, it seems that the white guys in charge forgot to ask the black police officers, who released this statement to the head of Nike:
Mr. Parker:
It is with great dismay that we were made aware of a letter that you received from the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) regarding your use of Colin Kaepernick in your new “Just Do It” advertising campaign. The National Black Police Association (NBPA) is not in agreement with NAPO on this matter, and we strongly condemn their call for police officers and their families to boycott Nike and its products.
Your inclusion of Mr. Kaepernick in your ads seems appropriate to us. We live in a country where the 1st Amendment is a right of the people. Mr. Kaepernick chose to exercise his right where his passion was—on the football field. NAPO believes that Mr. Kaepernick’s choice to openly protest issues surrounding police brutality, racism, and social injustices in this country makes him anti-police. On the contrary, the NBPA believes that Mr. Kaepernick’s stance is in direct alignment with what law enforcement stands for—the protection of a people, their human rights, their dignity, their safety, and their rights as American citizens. NAPO has shown an adeptness at maintaining the police status quo and the tone in their letter further validates Mr. Kaepernick’s concerns, as it undermines the trust that is needed by law enforcement in order for the profession to maintain its legitimacy. That NAPO has chosen this matter to take a stance only perpetuates the narrative that police are racist, with no regard, acknowledgment, respect, or understanding of the issues and concerns of the African-American community.
Your quote “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” is also appropriate as it relates to Mr. Kaepernick. For NAPO to presuppose that Mr. Kaepernick has not made sacrifices because he did not die on a battlefield shows you how out of touch NAPO is with the African-American community. We would like for them to stop their false narrative that you are not worthy of respect unless you were in the military or worked in law enforcement. The beauty of this country are the countless sacrifices that all people make in their everyday lives. The African-American community makes a sacrifice each time a life is unjustly lost at the hands of the very people who should protect them. A sacrifice is made each time the criminal justice system treats people of color as less than. A sacrifice is made each time a letter is sent asking officers to boycott a corporation, without asking those very African-American officers who are most affected, what their opinion is.
If they had asked the NBPA, we would have told them that they are out of line, and that the NBPA supports any person or group who exercises their right to peacefully protest against any form of social injustice, including police brutality and racism.
The NBPA proudly supports Nike and your use of Mr. Kaepernick in your new “Just Do It” advertising campaign. Truth and upholding the Constitutional rights of citizens are cornerstones of leadership in policing. Our mission includes striving constantly to bridge the gap between law enforcement and our communities—we are committed to ensuring equity for the community, as we work to enhance trust, legitimacy, transparency, and accountability in policing.
We will likely be buying and wearing lots of Nike products in the near future.
Best wishes,
Sonia Y.W. Pruitt
National Chairperson

The National Association of Police Officers decided it should come out against Nike’s new campaign. Well, it seems that the white guys in charge forgot to ask the black police officers, who released this statement to the head of Nike:

Oh yeah I know. I still can’t believe they flexed that hard. It is a dying league so I don’t think they are at the height of their power but it was still nice and bold by Nike.

I have never heard of the NBPA before, thank you for sharing this. I found this statement powerful and moving on a personal level. My father was a LEO. He passed away when I was 11 (unrelated to his work). While he was, and I am, as white as they come - this sentiment is exactly what he embodied. Protect and serve your community and country.
My father was a marksman, he had many trophies for sharpshooting. He took me to the range to shoot before he got sick, but it scared me and we never went back. As adept as he was, he never unholstered his weapon while on active duty. Being white does not make you a bad cop, just like being black does not make you a good cop. I think if he was alive today he would be just as saddened as I am about the current state of affairs.

But it fits with my whole “there’s no episteme, no ethos” to these fuckers. I swear what we’re watching is some kind of mass narcissicism outbreak.
I think every politician, especially those who run for high office, have a bit of a narcissistic streak.
I mean, one morning in 2007, Barack Obama woke up and said to himself, “I think I might be a better candidate for the Presidency than Hillary Clinton and I’m going to put together a team to see if I am right.”
That actually happened. It was a decision he made. And he was right, and we got eight years of a Presidency that took us through a very rough time in American history, despite the fact that he was pilloried very single day from the time he was elected until he left office by the opposition.
But Obama led with grace, class, intelligence, and a very wry wit. And when he had a Congressional majority, along with the absolutely yeoman effort of Nancy Pelosi, he got what he wanted done. It was a great two years. The economy was stabilized, and we got the ACA.
I understand what you are saying about a “mass narcissism breakout”, but what I think you are saying, and I don’t want to put words into your mouth, is that we have a new paradigm in Trump.
There is a horse racing term for a Black Swan. They’re called “sports”, horses without a breeding history that turn out to be remarkable racers. A recent example of this was a colt named John Henry. He was gelded at three because his breeding was nothing to speak of, but between 1980 and 1984, he was the best racer in America, winning the Eclipse Award twice. Based on his genetics, that couldn’t have happened.
I think Trump is a “sport”, but in political terms. He has no pedigree. He is a narcissist without peer outside of sociopaths, and I’m not saying he isn’t a sociopath. I think he is right there on the spectrum. He jumped in at the right time, and won. Whether he had Russian help is beside the point in this discussion. He won, and Hillary lost.
And here’s an important point, I don’t think the Russians ramped up until the middle of he R Primaries, when Trump was already kicking everybody else’s asses. They really got involved in the general election. Trump kicked the other R candidates on his own.
How did he do that? He didn’t do it by being an ultra-nationalist like a Shitler, he did it by being a strong man like a Mussolini. By force of personality. He truly believed, and convinced his followers, that he alone could make things better for them. Fascist light, yes, Nazi, no.
Now, the Neo-Facists, and Neo-Nazis, jumped right on, because they couldn’t believe that there was a national politician who (kinda, sorta) was on their side, even if he wasn’t blatant about it, outside of dig whistles, but it was the great unwashed who rushed to his banner.
Here’s my fear. Italy, almost seventy five years on, has not recovered from Mussolini. Their present ruling government is basically Mussolini/Fascist.
My hope is that Trump is a one off, that the American people see his sociopathic narcissism (possibly- I mentioned I think he’s on the spectrum, right?) for what it is and that the fringe elements of Neo-Fascists and Neo-Nazis who support him need to die a deserved death. But it’s the portion of the population that feels a need for a Strong Man in charge of the government that scares me.
Trump is not that man. He’s actually an insecure little pissant who bloviates. But many can’t see that. They are just scared as shit that history and their world is spinning out of control and they can do nothing about it.
Sorry for the rant, but I truly believe this is Very Serious Shit and that the election in sixty days will define this Republic long after I am taking a well deserved dirt bath.

So I’m talking last night when we had dinner at Uchi to Masa and Joshi, both Issei, about typhoon Jebi. Masa, who’s from Osaka, was saying his family is okay, although they had to go to a family house further in from the coast because their house had lost power and water.
Joshi’s parents, who run an inn in Kyoto, rather famous because Akira Kurosawa stayed there whenever he was in town, and wrote several screenplays with his collaborators in the inn, had some roof damage, but got through basically intact, which was lucky because there was significant damage in the city. Jebi fucked up that part of the country pretty badly, which had suffered earlier in the summer from torrential rain, followed by a heat wave which killed hundreds of people.
Half an hour later, Joshi hands me his phone and says “Look at this!” Masa said, “This is awful!”. It was the first report of the earthquake in Hokkaido, southeast of Sapporo, he knows I’m a geologist and I just winced and said “Japan is just not catching a single break this summer.” They just nodded and frowned.
Then they bumped heads and got down to business and cut fish. I love those guys.

So, I’m off to bed.
Just a couple of thoughts (could be completely wrong, but I don’t think so).
The R’s on the Judiciary Committee caved today. They know that Kavanaugh is a lightweight shite candidate for the Scotus and they know what is coming in November. They are going to lose the House. This is a 1984 for the R’s. They might lose the Senate, too, and the only way they can ensure that won’t happen is if Kavanaugh is tossed under the bus.
The Dems are going to continue to release e-mails and other info while continuing to demand the release of the rest of his records from the Bush years which will show that he was all in on torturing prisoners in defiance of the Geneva Conventions.
You know that’s what they are hiding, don’t you? Of course you do. It’s the stain of the Bush years and it just won’t go away. It scares the fuck out of them and that’s why Booker’s calling Cornyn’s bluff was so effective.
They want to keep the Senate. The fun bit is that if they lose the Senate, the next candidate for the Scotus won’t stand a chance because the R’s changed the rules and disallowed a filibuster on Scotus noms.
All in all, this was a great day. And the best part is that Trump has absolutely no idea what is happening. Such a putz.
Sweet scaly dreams, all.

You know, I’m not sure about the impeachment of judges. I lean towards saying yes 2/3s. I think at the very least he needs to become the new Bork and a rallying point against right wing extremism and dishonesty on the judiciary. I think the Dems need to push back against the attacks on our judges that the right has done for years.
if trump is impeached based on elements of collusion with the Russian government, first Pence will be asked to resign as having been either a willing dupe or an unwitting dullard, and then a quiet word will be had with Gorsuch and Kavanaugh suggesting that they either resign as honorable men, or be tainted for the rest of their careers, with Democrats packing the court at the first opportunity.
Way to narrow it down lol.

FDR tried to pack the court.
He had overwhelming majorities in both houses of congress, but the Supreme Court overturned one after another after another of the laws that he’d gotten passed by that overwhelming majority. The appellate justices and Supremes were mostly people who’d been put there by Coolidge and Hoover, and they didn’t like what the 3/4 D congress had done.
FDR found this so frustrating he considered expanding the court, to get a majority by putting his choices in the new seats. Even his own supporters couldn’t support this idea. His overwhelming majority in congress became, almost overnight, a much narrower majority. And that’s without a Fox or Sinclair or right-wing talk radio. Packing the court isn’t a realistic option.
If the Sarandon/Sanders revolution were to happen and D’s, even far-left D’s, were to fill Congress and the White House for the next 20 years, the Trump-appointed Federalist-approved judges will strike down one after another after another of whatever policies they pass. The only limiting factor on how much they will obstruct, is that the Supremes only have enough time to take on X number of cases per year.
So one of the most highly-promoted TV shows starting in a couple of weeks is called “Manifest” — it’s a sci-fi-ish mystery show that seems to be aiming for the audience that loved “Lost”. The premise is that a passenger jet that disappeared in 2013… suddenly shows up. Today. Nobody knows where it’s been, the people whose loved ones were presumed dead have to deal with now they’re not, the people on the plane are baffled because they had no feeling of anything odd at all. Supposedly this high-concept show will concentrate on the Human Drama of people’s family issues and…
all I can think is that these people went on a nice vacation early in Obama’s 2nd term, and they’ve come back to THIS?!? That’s a more difficult thing to come to terms with than “omg my twin brother is now 5 years older than me”…
This is just the wrong year for a show like this.
(also… I really enjoyed the pilot episode of the Sons of Anarchy sequel/spinoff Mayans. )

Right. I don’t know but the whole military respect and worship thing just feels so forced in this culture. Exactly, I think you’re phrasing better what exactly my problem is with this. It’s the whole forced nature of the whole deal. Right, the racial angle is another one too. I’ve seen so many of these black athletes told they’re ungrateful by the same people who fret deep state paranoid fantasies. I also saw a poignant post by a black veteran talk about how he served ten years including two deployments to Iraq and he still gets called the n-word. That’s the thing. We don’t even confront how we’ve treated our veterans of color and of different genders and sexual orientation. It was reading about black vets returning from WWII- only a few years before my own father was born mind you that made Truman decided to desegregate the military.

Trump’s stewing in his own juices given the Woodward book coming on the heels of Omarosa’s, and the nonstop leaks coming from the WH. Everyone is leaking to media. Everyone.
Everyone is willing to throw others under the bus, not only to show that they’re loyal to Trump, but to get ahead and try to show that they’re patriots for the nation all while continuing to show that they’re compromised and complicit cronies who think only of advancing the regressive GOP agenda by any means possible.
Trump continues attacking Woodward, which is a bad move, since we know Woodward has receipts. Like say the draft letter Cohn swiped off Trump’s desk ending the South Korea trade deal.

If he’s got that, you know Woodward has so much more.
Thing is that none of this matters to the GOP base, and they’re the ones pulling the GOP’s strings these days. They’ve so unmoored from reality that anyone in a leadership position trying to switch course and hold this admin accountable (yeah, stop laughing) is swimming against the red tide of toxic agitprop that the leadership has spewed for years on end. So in the end, they aren’t even trying.
They’re just advancing the GOP agenda by any means possible, including sending out a hack nominee for the SCT who’s engaged in perjury and lied to Congress multiple times. The GOP is using that as a cover while they’re again attacking health coverage and lying about Medicare/Medicaid and what Democrats want to do.
Ultimately, this comes back to getting out the vote in November, and every vote matters.
Every election matters (broken record, but it’s indisputably true).

However, the GOP in the twenties had not stolen two seats with the help of a hostile foreign power, so I think this time is different. If the Democrats want to move this country forward at all, or at least keep it from going backward, they must add two seats to the Court the next time they gain power. They must be as ruthless as the Right is at breaking norms of governance.

Probably rushed to press. First printings often have copy edit fails.
Donald Knuth’s “The Art of Computer Programming” has been updated and yet people are still finding errors, which he pays for. There’s even a wikipedia page about it: en.wikipedia.org.
But yes, this book was rushed to press.

True, but if they betray Trump they lose their base. So, either way, they lose. They made their bed.
They have indeed made their bed: and are likely to get severely scorched when it combusts in upcoming elections. Republican political “power” (in a lot of states) has depended mainly on highly-crafted gerrymandering and vote-suppression to bolster their vote totals/representation well past the level their actual numbers would warrant. A serious “blue wave” setback - especially on the HoR and State Lege levels* is not only going to crimp their power, but expose the GOP’s dirtiest secret to public analysis: that they are actually - in terms of policy, ideology and popularity - quite the minority Party in vast areas of the country. And the Trump cultists, despite the media bubble they love to wallow in, are a smaller minority yet. Unfortunately, due to our Federal/State Constitutional system, this is hard to leverage against for political influence.
*Even more unfortunately, the Senate (at least until 2020) is a pretty hopeless case. For now.

right now, I really don’t want Trump impeached…. why? Because impeachment is an inherent political process and I don’t trust the GOP to not fuck that up in any capacity or spin it in such as fashion as to try and score additional political points or save their asses to limit the political damage somehow….
what I want is for Trump (and many members of his Administration and the leadership of the GOP itself) to be Indicted. Bring actual civil charges to court and try his ass now for the various crimes that he’s already admitted to or have been documented in the fucking media itself…
Obstruction of Justice and Perjury. I’m fairly certain that for him and others we can find evidence of campaign finance law violations, emoluments violations, voting rights law violations and head on up the food chain to treason.

Grand Prix (Formula 1) and LeMans endurance cars are using electric/hybrid tech.
And there is a Formula E (pure electric) racing series going too.
DC direct drive motors on both front and rear axles make for some big torque from the get-go.
Formula 1 cars are setting new track records at just about every race now.
Keeping tires in decent shape is key now because they have so much torque in and out of the the turns they can burn the race rubber up pretty fast.
Here is a taste of Formula E.

I love W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings.
Directed by John Avildsen (later much more well known for directing Rocky, Rocky V, and the original three The Karate Kid movies), it’s Reynolds’ first movie with Jerry Reed (and also with Mel Tillis in a small role, who would later be in Cannonball Run with Reynolds) and also has Art Carney, Don Williams, and teams him up again with Ned Beatty (Deliverance) and James Hampton (The Longest Yard):
In 1957, W.W. Bright (Burt Reynolds) is an easygoing crook who robs gas stations. He meets the Dixie Dancekings, a country music band, while fleeing from a policeman. Dixie (Conny Van Dyke), their singer, gives him an alibi. He claims to be in the music business, and ends up promoting the group. Wayne (Jerry Reed), the band’s leader, does not trust him, but the others all have faith in him.
W.W. only steals from SOS gas stations, so the company’s chairman sends for Bible-thumping ex-lawman Deacon John Wesley Gore (Art Carney) to track him down. Meanwhile, W.W. and the newly outfitted band go to see Country Bull (Ned Beatty), a highly successful singer-songwriter. He is willing to write them a song for $1000.
W.W. talks the Dancekings into a bank robbery (SOS has just opened a bank branch) that does not work out quite as planned. When Gore broadcasts the description of the getaway car on a radio revival show, W.W. burns up his car. He is ready to separate from the Dancekings in order to shield them, but then he hears them rehearsing Wayne’s new song. He persuades Country Bull to listen to it; the man is so impressed, he puts them on the Grand Ole Opry. There Gore catches W.W. using an exact replica of his burnt car as bait. Gore makes him drive to the police department, but just as they arrive, Gore realizes it is now Sunday, so rather than violating the Sabbath, he lets him go.
I remember seeing this movie on a later run in the late 70s-early 80s with my parents at a long-since-gone drive-in not far from my house as a little kid; as a Nashvillian, it’s also fun to pick out the places where they filmed some of the scenes.

Pence is the only one who really stands to benefit, which makes it so much worse that he was willing to flagrantly undermine the fragile psyche of the guy with nuclear launch authority just to become President.

Exactly, what I’m trying to say is that the GOP of today is a rotten cesspool and it would still be that way if Rubio, Cruz, or Kasich were its standard bearer. Trump just knew how to capitalize on it the most.

These are the so-called intellectuals on the right. This is where the judicial nominations get formulated (and where they get their ideas). This is where the separation of fact from alt-reality begins.
They really do think Obama doesn’t deserve the credit for the economy that grew under Obama, and that Trump inherited (and is now trying his best to fuck up with still more tariffs - after adding another $260+ billion to the $200 billion in tariffs that Trump warns he’s tacking on).
They’ll keep giving Trump credit right up until the economy falls back into recession, at which point Democrats will be totally responsible.

Again, I think oyu’re missing my point is that the GOP has had these problems for years. Yes, they liked to talk a good game about fiscal conservatism- remember who ran up the debt in the 2000’s, family values- how many of the Clinton era impeachment moralists have been exposed as adulterers or worse in Hastert’s case, etc. Yes, superficially, minority groups may have been drawn to an aspect of what the GOP talked about but what I am trying to tell you is that it’s been all talk for a long time.

I used to self identify as a Libertarian. I no longer do and have not for a long, long time and consider the people who label themselves as such largely idiotic and selfish assholes.
My only political belief, right now, is that the Republican party is a clear and present danger to not only this country, but the survival of the human race on this planet. Pertaining to this country they are traitors and need to be dealt with as we would any traitor. They are 100% un-American and do not have the best interests of anybody in this country but the 1% and other moneyed interests. I do not consider anybody on that side of the aisle worthy of any measure of respect.

Yep exactly my point. Republicans have been talking platitudes about fiscal policy, family values, etc for as long as I can remember and they’ve always been more often than not frauds. The ones who ironically do espouse those values are the ones that get called RINOs and got outcasted first by the Reagan cult and now the Trump cult.

Honestly, Trump should find out who wrote the op-ed. He shouldn’t use the DOJ to do it, it should be an internal White House investigation. But as the duly elected president (and as much as we want to bemoan the facts, he won based on the rules in place at the time), he’s entitled to have staff working to carry out his policy preferences. If they can’t do that, then they should resign and explain publicly why the resigned. This isn’t a red state senator writing an op-ed criticizing his preferred policies, this is a member of his staff basically saying “people in the building are working to undermine the president’s policies.” That is not how the presidency should work, and if any official from any past administration had done this, they’d be rode out of town on a rail.
Basically, this is one of those spots where he’s right, but for the wrong reasons.

Exactly. However it’s also a symptom of the dysfunctional environment he’s created and incubated, and the outwardly sycophantic personality traits he values and has promoted in his staff. Eventually any leader who refuses to hear the truth while surrounding himself with mendacious, obsequious fuckwits is going to find themselves metaphorically stabbed in the back like this. So while it’s true that a President is totally entitled to better service from his people in the abstract, it’s also true that he bears a massive chunk of the responsibility for being in this particular predicament in the first place.
This is why I find the whole thing both hilarious and truly terrifying at the same time. Whoever did this is an absolutely venomous little shit, but it happened because Trump chose to surround himself with venomous little shits.

How do you just walk into the wrong apartment? Was the door unlocked? Was she less than sober? Why, as a cop, if she found her apartment open/unlocked did she not think to call for backup? What was the guy doing when she walked in? Because if she shot a guy who was chilling on the couch watching tv, that’s probably very bad no good terrible, right? How does she not notice that his apartment isn’t decorated like hers? How quickly did she start shooting?
I’d ask why she was carrying a gun while off duty, but the obvious answer is “Texas.” I’ll also give her a pass on not recognizing a neighbor in her building since I barely know three people in my 24 unit building…

I mean I’ve had moments where I momentarily go to the wrong place and then it instantly dawns on me. I sure as hell wouldn’t shoot someone. This is exactly the problem that the guns solve everything creates and yes I know she was a cop but that just furthers my point. Shoot, ask questions later when the person is dead. There needs to be accountability for this.

I’ll co-sign that entirely. There was talk (I forget where, I want to say maybe the Crooked Media/Pod Save America guys) early on about all the Trump leaks vs the Obama leaks. When the Obama Administration would leak, it was usually a trial balloon or some such think. Compared to Trump where it was petty palace intrigue stuff. And the argument went, with Obama people had their voices heard, they were part of the process, and even if they didn’t win, they at least knew they were consulted/considered. Trump, it’s the exact opposite. It’s a dumpster fire of a train wreck

Actually, I think the odds are probably a lot lower in this case; most police shootings - however unarmed/inoffensive the victim might be - can usually be classified (if however vaguely) as “in the line of duty” - or at least somewhat “criminally” related: the Dallas case seems at best one of egregious/verging-on-criminal carelessness: as well as a PR nightmare: I’m not sure her badge is going to be much of a shield in this incident.
TBH, what if the shooter wasn’t a policewoman? Would the headline:
“Dallas woman shoots, kills neighbor in apartment mixup” make it much better?
