I think it was David Frum who told everyone to translate “deep state” to “rule of law”, and everything makes sense. Like “law and order” to “terrorizing black and brown people” and “fiscal responsibility” to “stop giving money to black and brown people”.
Obama is currently America’s last legitimate President.

The biggest and unfortunately totally unfixable problem with Trump is that he views every single interaction through the gravitational lens of his own massive ego. He explicitly said the reason he hired Omorosa and kept her on despite Kelly’s objections was that “she only said great things about me.” It’s the reason behind all the dysfunction detailed so far in the excerpts from Woodward’s book, the reason the anonymous NYT op-ed writer decided to go through with that bullshit stunt, the reason Trump was so easily suckered into both the disastrous Helsinki and Singapore summits. It’s gotten him to this point where he’s psychologically unravelling before our eyes as paranoia sets in after repeatedly being stabbed in the back by people he shouldn’t have trusted but did. He’s caught in a viper pit trap of his own making where he’s surrounded himself with scheming, obsequious people, almost none of whom truly respect him and many if not most of whom hate him and are terrified by what he’s capable of.

Oh, of course they do. But what they want to do is illegal, destructive, disgusting, or mostly nonsensical, and most of their True Believers have no idea how to operate a bureaucracy. It’s like stealing an airliner when none of the thieves are pilots. The civil servants are rarely true believers; they follow the law and generally try to do their proper jobs. So, the bureaucracy, by necessity or by choice, pushes back, and these idiots don’t know what to do.
That’s why Dick Cheney was so dangerous and could get away with so much. He was SecDef and he knew how to fuck with the system and force them to do what they didn’t want to do. So Iraq.
We’re going to have to remove every corrupt Republican from office. The party has betrayed the country by failing to act on the Putin and Trump’s attack on America.

The only way Obama could serve would be in the third year of the presidency, if he were pulled out of retirement. He cannot be VP because he’s inelegible to run. The VP has to be able to take over at any time, but the president is limited to at most 10years of service.

Nope, can’t work. Obama, having served two terms as president is not eligible to be VP because he is not eligible to be president under the 12th Amendment. There’s apparently some scholarly argument that the 22nd Amendment gives wiggle room to that rule but it seems a bit specious to me.

Pretty much: a return that that grand old American tradition of the 19th-Century Spoils System, where a change of Administration meant the wholesale replacement of Federal appointees from Cabinet officials right down to Post Office clerks by “loyal” party hacks. Of course, there were a few drawbacks, but that’s probably the ideal for today’s RWNJs.
“Loyal”, of course, in today’s context, meaning “mindless Trump cultist”.

The way I read it the only possible way for Obama to become President again under current rules is if he becomes Speaker of the House (or holds some other office in the line of succession) and ascends to the Presidency with less than two years left in a current President’s term. He could probably be nominated as an interim replacement VP with less than two years left as well.

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Obama is 57, I could imagine a scenario where a Democratic president in 10-12 years asks him to serve as Secretary of State. Quincy Adams ended up in the House, and Taft became Chief Justice, so it’s plausible, but highly not likely.
And I’m guessing any confirmation hearing would spend a lot of time on the line of succession issue.

Beto needs some seasoning in the Senate. It’s been a very long time since someone went from the House to the White House, you have to go back to Garfield or Lincoln for that comparison.
Presidents these days tend to come from three places: the Senate; governors’ mansions; or, the Naval Observatory. With Trump being the obvious outlier.

re: #108 sagehen
Brown had his best chance in 1976, he got in late and Carter had a big head start but he did still manage to win a few primaries.
Wiki en.wikipedia.org
Brown began his first campaign for the Democratic nomination for president on March 16, 1976,[33] late in the primary season and over a year after some candidates had started campaigning. Brown declared: “The country is rich, but not so rich as we have been led to believe. The choice to do one thing may preclude another. In short, we are entering an era of limits.”[34][35]
Brown’s name began appearing on primary ballots in May and he won in Maryland, Nevada, and his home state of California.[36] He missed the deadline in Oregon, but he ran as a write-in candidate and finished in third behind Jimmy Carter and Senator Frank Church of Idaho. Brown is often credited with winning the New Jersey and Rhode Island primaries, but in reality, uncommitted slates of delegates that Brown advocated in those states finished first. With support from Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards, Brown won a majority of delegates at the Louisiana delegate selection convention; thus Louisiana was the only southern state to not support Southerners Carter or Alabama Governor George Wallace. Despite this success, he was unable to stall Carter’s momentum, and his rival was nominated on the first ballot at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. Brown finished third with roughly 300 delegate votes, narrowly behind Congressman Morris Udall and Carter.

Still doesn’t explain where/how/why Trump’s still getting payments from Ritz Carlton unless Ritz Carlton has a leasehold share in that property and is now paying Trump despite no longer being a tenant.
And yeah, my head just hurt because it should be obvious that if they’re no longer tenants of the property they would not have a reason to pay rents (they’re no longer tenants).
There’s indeed something odd about this, and I’d suggest that Fahrenthold check with Crain’s or YIMBY to see if there’s something else going on here.

Fascinating, if (like so much of NY Real Estate dealings) murky story: *maybe* the answer (or a clue) is in the 2004 article linked:
But 112 Central Park South will break from that pattern by being marketed as a co-op, though without some of the restrictions normally associated with co-ops. The choice of the co-op form reflects an unusual landownership aspect of the deal, one that is expected to result in the apartments’ carrying slightly lower prices than comparable residences in the area. A key reason No. 112 will become a co-op is that Anbau rents, not owns, the land beneath the building. Condominiums, unlike co-ops, must own the land under the building. Mr. Glascock said part of the eight-month negotiation to buy the old hotel involved extending the ground lease, held by Alice Kandell and Joan Gordon, to 99 years from 45. But the building, he added, will operate like a condominium; owners will not need board approval to sell or sublet their units.
So the co-op building is still on “leased” ground - perhaps Trump (well, his lawyers, anyway) wrangled some sort of participation deal that’s still in effect after (?)14 years: though $71K annually ($5900/mo) is pretty picayune by NYC standards.

I wonder if he gave good info to Mueller and that is why he got a light sentence. I’m thinking yes, he did.
He really is a key person in that what he did may be somewhat minor in comparison to others but it may be the beginning of the whole Russian collusion issue.
Papadopoulos was the first person to mention the Russians were ready to do some work for the campaign. This was before the meeting in Trump Tower.
It is thought the meeting in Trump Tower wasn’t about what the Russians had on Clinton, but was a meeting to find out what Trump would promise the Russians as payment for their “work” on his campaign.
Then Manafort went and got the Republican platform changed and Flynn was busy working on sanctions being backed off.
He may well be the little tiny pebble holding up a huge rock that when removed causes the big rock to start rolling down the hill crushing everything is sight.

I’m not entirely sure Trump would have won the nomination if it was looking early like Clinton wasn’t going to be the Democratic nominee. To a certain extent, Trump is the end result of Clinton Derangement Syndrome.

I think he would’ve because, just look at the field he was running against. He gave the GOP Base the racism it craved pure and uncut, and he also took popular positions to protect Social Security and Medicare against cuts, unlike the rest of them who cater to the GOP donor class instead of GOP voters.

I know black women get it a lot more than a Whitey McWhiterson like me and just thinking about it is making my skin crawl.

Depends on the alternative. If Biden had it locked up then Kasich might have been a more obvious choice but that’s also probably dependent on a much smaller field overall. Trump benefitted early on from the way the others split the primary vote up amongst themselves. Conversely I think Bernie helped Trump enormously because the news coverage was rapidly and nauseatingly dominated by A Tale of Two Populists.
My thinking is that all of them, but especially Trump were running against Clinton from the very beginning, and the wingnut media was partying like it was 1999, going batshit crazy with all the Clinton conspiracies. That level of stupid played into Trump’s wheelhouse, compared to the other “serious” candidates.
Imagine Biden (or whomever) winning Iowa and New Hampshire, even a close call in Nevada probably means Clinton is done early.
Without her are their organizing terror, I’m not sure the base gets riled into the frenzy that Trump benefited from. No “but her e-mails” no “Clinton Foundation Uranium One” no rehashing of the hits from the 90s.
It’s entirely possible that he still would have won the nomination, but he’d have been neutered in the general without 30 years of Clinton based conspiracy theories.
re: #225 Big Beautiful Door
Many breeds which use to be bred for work are raised to be pets now.
There ARE AKC Greyhound breeders who don’t breed for racing, they’re just few and far between. For example, there were NO AKC Greyhound breeders at the Golden Gate Kennel Club’s big Cow Palace show this year.
The vast majority of Greyhounds in the US are NGA, the racing breeder association. Take away racing, and will they still breed Greyhounds? Probably only a very few.
I honestly find myself a little ambivalent. No racing, and Rango and Zeena never exist and I never get to know and love them. But no racing, and all the dogs who have been tortured and/or killed wouldn’t have been tortured and/or killed. So, not an unalloyed positive.
(I read something on Greyhound puppies - they do everything all puppies do, but they do it at 30 mph, so when they run into you as all puppies do, it’s a bit more painful)

Just as there was a small, but very real possibility that Trump would win, as he did, there is a small but very real possibility that the GOP retains control of Congress if we don’t get the vote out in November. We know what happens then; Sessions resigns and is replaced by a Trump loyalist who neuters Mueller, Trump pardons whoever he needs to, SCOTUS bars the NY AG from issuing Trump a subpoena, and the Trumpthing is solidly in the driver’s seat for two more years.

Trump will burn through every single “loyalist” in his first term.
I would have to go find the polls, but this (DK link), from Richard Ojeda, who’s running for the office, is nuts if true:
This time last year, an R + 23 district that voted for Donald Trump overwhelmingly by 50 points would have never been seen as a chance to flip the House. After a year of fighting, talking with voters, putting boots on the ground and never giving up, the polls are in and we ARE winning in West Virginia.
Our race has been moved to a Toss-Up and will be one of the biggest upsets and shockers of the 2018 midterm election.

A sample
I can remember the moment clearly: the young daughter of one of President Donald Trump’s top aides brought a puppy to the office. Her father had asked Chief of Staff John Kelly if it was okay. Kelly, in that irascible way of his, said, “Who gives a fuck?” before he went back to prying the nuclear football out of the screaming president’s hands.
Everyone of us in the West Wing knows that President Trump is afraid of dogs. “Dingoes are dogs,” I once heard him say. “They eat babies. They eat souls.” And then he leaned back in his chair and softly wept as he stared out at nothing, whispering, “So many babies. So many souls.”
The president was wandering around the halls, having gotten loose from the Oval Office, when he saw the puppy. It was a pug, so it was truly adorable. He gestured at the girl, who smiled angelically at the man her father had told her deserves everyone’s respect and loyalty. “I want to fuck it,” he said. The Secret Service agents looked at each other and then went for the aide’s daughter. “No, not the girl,” he scoffed. “The dog.”
Later, the aide told me, “I’m glad it was the dog. It would have been hard to let him take my daughter, but I would have because of the Supreme Court.” I nodded. We all nodded because we all would have done the same.

A new Monmouth University poll of West Virginia’s 3rd District found Democrat Richard Ojeda with the advantage in the race to replace Republican Rep.Evan Jenkins, who lost a Senate primary.
Ojeda, a state senator and veteran, has 43 percent support to Republican Carol Miller’s 41 percent among “all potential voters” (voters who have participated in an election since 2010 or are newly registered). The Democrat has a wider lead in two likely voter models. Ojeda leads Miller, the state House majority whip, 47 percent to 41 percent using a “historical midterm turnout” model and 48 percent to 39 percent in a “Democratic surge” model.
And then the next paragraph!
Ojeda, who has said he voted for Trump in 2016, has a slight lead in favorability with a third of voters viewing him positively, while 27 percent view Miller favorably. But neither candidate is known to about half the electorate.

I really think so too. I know a lot think it’s just him looking out for his survival but it happened so damn quickly.

Knowing the ways Republicans operate, I’m virtually certain that Trump can prove that Graham is gay, and is using that to blackmail Graham into servitude.
re: #302 HappyWarrior
Graham really thinks this kissing Trump’s ass is going to get him to somehow out of being primaried in 2020. Sad.
I don’t think that’s the only reason for his trump love.
Why they think leaving the Senate is the end of the world. President Obama, apart from everything else he does, is showing the world that life after politics is good. Rather reminds me of becoming a grandmother - the life of a parent has a wonderful reward - never understood until it happens.

I dunno. If that were the case, I think Graham would have immediately started being a Trump water carrier. I think it’s something more damning but who knows.
Pro-tip: don’t start watching Key and Peele videos on YouTube. It’s impossible to stop.

One causes conservatives to freak out, burn shit, and get angry. The other is mass shootings.

Senior Canadian delegation leaving DC. No clarity on next talks between Lighthizer and Freeland. Not before later next week though.

And if that’s the reason - then Graham is even more ridiculous - he has much to thank President Obama for & should be seriously happy that much of the world is accepting of all forms of adult sexuality.
Charles I just gave you $60 for another year of ad free access. Thank you for providing a wonderful place where we can share our views, food, lives and many other things. :)

No real explanation or detailed story coming out, but for once, no hiding behind the Blue Wall…
Allegedly the officer was on the wrong floor, and so failed to open the apartment door with their key.
The shooting happening after the homeowner opened the door - presumably to see what the scratching noise was.
That….would be a hard one to defend.
(hearsay from twitter without actual source, so maybe take with pinch of salt)

100% agreed. Graham wouldn’t be a target of this kind of blackmail (if this is what’s happening) if he had a spine.

My God! I’ve gone blind!
The other possibility is that dropping a towel on Trump’s head so that he can’t see would make him think that nobody else can see him. Like the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal.

As if there is anyone left who does not already know/suspect that he is gay and nobody really cares.

Lindsey is so full of shit
[Embedded content]
Ah yes, and remember the Lindsey of 2016—the man is so full of shit, his teeth are brown:
He has called Trump a “jackass” and a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot,” and he has suggested that Republicans should kick him out of the party…As the GOP primary field narrowed, Graham famously characterized the choice between Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.) and Trump as a choice “between being shot or poisoned”
“I…cannot in good conscience support Donald Trump because I do not believe he is a reliable Republican conservative nor has he displayed the judgment and temperament to serve as commander in chief,”
“I think he’s a kook,” he said in February 2016. “I think he’s crazy. I think he’s unfit for office.”
“You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell.”
“This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy,” he said.”If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it. There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.” (After assholes comments about Judge Curiel)
re: #330 gwangung
Um, wot? Is Elon on active duty with them?
He’s a defense contractor via SpaceX.
Edited to add: This is likely to be a real problem. Because of the stupid war on drugs, the Federal government has all kinds of tightass laws in place for drug-free workplaces for contractors.
Having the CEO of a major contractor toking it up on air is a major contradiction to all of that.
re: #332 Backwoods_Sleuth
As if there is anyone left who does not already know/suspect that he is gay and nobody really cares.
Unfortunately for Graham, a decisive fraction of GOP primary voters in South Carolina are likely to be backward enough to care about this.

re: #302 HappyWarrior

He got primaried from the right in 2014, during the height of teabagger madness. He cruised to the nomination with more than 50% of the vote and didn’t even have to face a runoff. I know things have gone south since then, but I just don’t think that explains his total turnaround.

OK: I guess belated thanks are in order from me, too - my subscription apparently renewed automatically last 8/20: without my realizing it (til I saw the charge). No matter: LGF is well worth it.

Right. That’s why I think there may be some blackmail here.

Suspected/known by voters is very different than having the entire GOP machine go all in on the smear campaign.

I think he really wants to be Attorney General.

It’s kind of like to them, he’s OUR gay, so it’s okay. I truly don’t think it’s much of a secret here is SC—there are even many rumors about Tim Scott, but the goopers will keep electing them both.

I think he wants to be Attorney General. Or maybe the next supreme.
Whatever they have on him, I think it’s gotta be more than being gay or not being right wing enough. It’s either something truly horrible or, in typical Lindsey fashion, he’s looking out for his own legacy, and now that his amigo is gone, there’s nothing and nobody to tone him down.

Sounds right to me. In any case even though I’ve never been a fan, it’s pathetic to watch.
