Scott Mulvahill: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 18, 2019 | Bob Boilen — Scott Mulvahill has been trying to win the Tiny Desk Contest for each of its four years. He’s always been one of our favorites, though he’s never been our winner. The double bassist entered his song, “Begin Againers” in 2016 and though it wasn’t the winning entry, we all loved it so much, I invited him to my desk to perform his extraordinary song. He opened the Tiny Desk with it, only this time he was joined by bandmates Jesse Isley and Josh Shilling who shared vocal harmonies.

Scott Mulvahill honed his craft touring with the great bluegrass mandolin player Ricky Skaggs. “Playing bluegrass with him is like playing jazz with Miles Davis,” Scott told the Tiny Desk crowd.

Each of the three tunes Scott Mulvahill played represents different aspects of his creative spirit. He challenges himself to find ways to use the bass as a solo instrument, but its most common role is to accompany others. So he brought his band along for his most rollicking song, “Gold Plated Lie.” There’s a bit of Jackson Browne in his voice and a bit of Paul Simon shows through in his self-reflective words.

For the final tune, the title track from his self-released and current album Himalayas, Scott Mulvahill goes solo, brings out a bow for that bass and we hear a spaciousness I don’t often find in the Nashville world he inhabits. This is a perfect introduction to an artist with enormous talent and an artist seeking to stretch his musical world.

Set List
“Begin Againers”
“Gold Plated Lie”
“Himalayas”

Musicians
Scott Mulvahill: bass, vocals; Terence Clark: drums; Jesse Isley: guitar, vocals; Josh Shilling: keys, vocals; Gabe Scott: dobro

Jorge Ramos and his team have been released but Maduro is holding on to the interview tape. Apparently Maduro didn’t like what was being asked.

(And yeah, I completely believe people are eating out of garbage trucks. The situation in Venezuela is *dire*.)

ETA: How do you know you’re doing your job right? When you’ve managed to piss off both the right-wing dictator wannabe of the USA and the left-wing strongman of Venezuela.

I’ve seen the quotes about Sanders raising a whole lot of money and having a whole lot of initial support - one million volunteers already - and I find it funny. I doubt these people really thought that the candidate that came in second in the 2008 Democratic primary was allowed to claim an infrastructure advantage in 2016. Now that the second place finisher in the last primary is running again, it’s just funny that it’s now an advantage.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that I’m not really worried about him. He’s going to get beaten in the debates and on the trail.

First time two nuclear powers are actually shooting into the territory of the other. This is double plus ungood. It has the chance to spiral out of control, and there’s no good outcomes here if that happens.

It all depends how fractured the rest of the field stays. Bernie comes with a built in base, if the other candidates don’t consolidate quickly he could get a lot of early wins. momentum is really important in the early states.

Yeah, remember how Trump kissed up to India big-time during the campaign.

Looks like it is time to send the boy wonder to India/Pakistan to save mankind.

Trump most likely: Jared is more than capable at making great strides in achieving peace in the world. With my input and great negotiating tactics we will convince these two great countries to make business and not war. They both have ocean front properties, why not turn them into hotels and condos. It’s a beautiful area and they tell me very warm. We can make it paradise! We should do that in Iran too. It’s right there. They could be the The Eastern Riviera. Build buildings and not bombs. I just came up with that. I think that is pretty good…everybody likes a warm building.

I watched the CNN townhall with Bernie. Same old - same old but he certainly is effective at responding to the progressive base; no details on paying for things but then Republicans never explain how they are paying for tax cuts. The one question he did not answer was Wolf’s query as to when he was releasing his taxes — promised he would but no definite target date. You would think he would have prepared an effective response but he is clearly trying to evade the issue.

Bass? Get her a copy of this album:

Charles Mingus does some amazing playing and combined with the equal genius of the the other two (Duke Ellington on Piano and Max Roach’s drums) and you have one of the all time greatest jazz albums that remains painfully unknown.

Lawrence please —- polls at this point are totally worthless. Why try to tell us that Gallup polls show that Trump will lose the electoral college? At this point, prior to selection of a Democratic candidate, prior to a brutal campaign, prior to Russian interference — don’t waste our time in discussing meaningless polls. Let’s not talk about the horse race — let’s talk about issues.

It seems to me that polls at this stage are useful tor two things: one being the baseline for internal party support and the other name recognition. That’s it. And it doesn’t even give you the state of the race right now because this isn’t the final field-Hickenlooper, Biden and a few others are still mulling getting in the race. We won’t know much more until June or so then the final candidates enter the race and we have a set field and that field starts interacting with each other.

I think it’s instructive to see what tRump’s ceiling looks like. He got 62,000,000 votes last time. You can’t tell me he’s gained any support in the last two years. I think even polls against Gene Eric Democrat can tell us something. Hopefully he couldn’t break 60,000,000 now….

Holy jumping Jesus on a pogo stick! India and Pakistan in a potentially catastrophic confrontation and Trump is what we’ve got to handle it. The crew on AF 1 would be better qualified. They may or may not have the necessary education but they are at least serious minded and professional people, which is more than can be said for Cheetolini. I have friends in/from both countries, and so I am worried for them. Trump is liable to say or do something that will just make things worse.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong-Un is in his armored train crossing China on a 60-hour trip to Hanoi from the NK border. The train passed through my city, but naturally I missed seeing it because Kim’s train schedule is a closely guarded secret. There have been crossings closed to vehicular traffic and normal train schedules disrupted because of the Kim train, so lots of Chinese people are pissed. Any remarks on social media about it are swiftly censored by the government, though.

What’s he going to do when he hits the Vietnam border? The Vietnamese have a different track width than the Chinese!

nytimes.com

“In a sign of the rivalry between China and its southern neighbor, Vietnam has deliberately continued to use different spacing on its railroad tracks, which in the past made it more difficult for China to invade, Mr. Cheng said.

So Mr. Kim will have to leave his train at the border with Vietnam. He will travel the last 105 miles or so to Hanoi by road, Vietnamese officials say, a winding route through low mountains.”

BJP’s got a shitposting team and a bunch of followers waiting to dogpile, and braying about this situation is right up their alley. “We’re going to invade and kill you all” is popping in places, because whether or not there was an actual base blown up, the nationalists need there to be an enormous quantity of theater and fanfare.

And while basically everybody involved is shit…no seriously, utter shit…it pays to look at the fucking ridiculous context of the Jammu-Kashmir conflict and that the “blurgh, blurgh support the troops” stuff is tied into nationalist pink slime in general and pretending the area isn’t under a rape-and-summary-execution-heavy martial law in specific.

A lot of that has to do with diet: a Mediterranean diet as in Spain & Italy, a lot of fish as in Iceland, Japan and Norway, etc.

In America we have a health-care industry that ignores diet in favor of prescribing medications, and a food processing industry that is little concerned with long-term health issues.

In this country “health” isn’t an accomplishment, it’s a product. It’s your god-given right to live however you want and then have the medicos fix you all up. At enormous expense. In this country “health” isn’t an accomplishment, it’s a product. It’s your god-given right to live however you want and then have the medicos fix you all up. At enormous expense. At everybody’s expense. And like any product, if you or your insurance company can’t afford it, you don’t deserve it. Because freedom.

And bacon. And corn sugar syrup. And cheap fast food because we pay our workers $8.50 per hour…

Here’s a long quote from that story:

The job also changed the way he saw the world. After he saw so many videos saying that 9/11 was not a terrorist attack, he came to believe them. Conspiracy videos about the Las Vegas massacre were also very persuasive, he says, and he now believes that multiple shooters were responsible for the attack. (The FBI found that the massacre was the work of a single gunman.)

Randy now sleeps with a gun at his side. He runs mental drills about how he would escape his home in the event that it were attacked. When he wakes up in the morning, he sweeps the house with his gun raised, looking for invaders.

He has recently begun seeing a new therapist, after being diagnosed with PTSD and generalized anxiety disorder.

“I’m fucked up, man,” Randy says. “My mental health — it’s just so up and down. One day I can be really happy, and doing really good. The next day, I’m more or less of a zombie. It’s not that I’m depressed. I’m just stuck.”

He adds: “I don’t think it’s possible to do the job and not come out of it with some acute stress disorder or PTSD.”

Greendale School District condemns video of students using racial slurs

Greendale School District has condemned a five-second video shared over the weekend across Facebook that allegedly showed two students using racial slurs.

The video shows what appears to be a white male student playfully holding another white male student down and telling him to “say it.” The student being held down says the n-word and calls black people “animals.” Afterwards, laughter can be heard in the background.

Although that incident appears to involve students of high-school age, the district confirmed a second racist video, this one posted on YouTube, apparently involving a Greendale elementary school. Both videos were recorded off campus, according to Kitty Goyette, communications director for the district.

I have copies of 10 years of tax returns (should I be audited, I keep last 10 years for good measure). Copying them? A trip to Staples/Kinkos and within a few hours, I’d have everything copied. It might take a few more to go through and blot out SSNs but that’s a minor detail.

Heck, if they did it on Turbotax, they could print out the copies with just a few hours worth of work.

This is the first of several days of testimony. Most will be closed door, but tomorrow will be a public session and it’s widely expected that Cohen will implicate Trump in multiple federal felonies (aka high crimes).

Cohen has no reason to lie at this point since he’s already going to prison, and any lies would only serve to extend his prison sentences.

The testimony will not be on Trump-Russia because that investigation is still ongoing, but rather Trump’s money laundering, campaign finance crimes, and other financial chicanery, including the payoffs to Daniels and others.

Of course I misspoke when I said Washington used to be the only state with open “primaries”. At that time all we had were caucuses. What I meant was you didn’t have to register as a member of any party. I’ve been questioned on that, and can’t swear to it (WA being the only state like that, I mean), but my geology teacher registered a bunch of us for the first time when the voting age went down and he was a state representative, so you’d think he’d know what he was talking about.

So far, since the Indian AF attack on something in Pakistani controlled territory, there have been no reprisals. Pakistan claims nothing was hit except a bunch of trees and rocks. India claims that they took out a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp and killed a bunch of terrorists there.

The narratives allow both sides to claim that they won and enough plausible deniability that it can be a one-off that doesn’t lead either/both sides to escalate.

Still, can’t imagine that Pakistan will be happy with the attack, or the fact that Indian fighter jets slipped into Pakistani territory without too much effort. There’s probably more going on here than meets the eye as the Pakistani government knows that these terror groups operate on their territory but the government can’t directly crack down without reprisals against the government itself.

If things stay silent over next 24 hours, I think we could say that this was a one-off.

Virginia I think you also don’t register as a member of a party; on primary day, you tell them at the desk which ballot you want. And maybe Missouri?

The Democrats ARE responsible — because they get minorities to vote. If minorities didn’t vote, Harris wouldn’t have had to commit fraud in the general election.

Of course, he also committed fraud in the primaries to become the nominee.

re: #127 lawhawk

I suspect they will retaliate, but maybe not in the next 24 hours.

171
lawhawk  Feb 26, 2019 • 8:21:27am

re: #170 Scottish Dragon

It’s possible that they do - but that it will be of a similar variety: they’ll claim to have bombed some terror camp, but India will claim that the attack failed and they hit a bunch of nothing.

Both sides get to claim that they did something, retaliating against the “bad guys” and that they won.

The true Fake News started under Clinton, when he was relentlessly attacked by the burgeoning RW machine for every evil the RW could imagine, starting with the death of Vince Foster. Obama was foolish enough to think that the RW hatred was directed specifically at the Clintons when in reality it was directed at anyone who challenged Republican hegemony.

A more colloquial term for “Machiavellian”; supporting the weaker of the opposing candidates in a primary in the hopes that they will lose.

There will not likely be anyone running against Trump, so GOP voters can turn out in droves in the primaries to support the candidates they think have the least chance of winning the general.

With the obvious corollary that thus those things should still be considered unnecessary luxuries, and we should have an EVEN more stratified society again, never mind that short of subsistence farming, there’s no way to acquire the food components one would need to live without refrigeration, and if you allow a freezer but not a microwave, you’re looking at half the articles being sold today still being impossible to prepare.

We are looking at two concepts that overlap but do not fully equate: labor as a commercial commodity and work as a positive social ethos and value. The GOP seems to prefer the former while preaching the latter.

The “dignity of work”, however, lies in giving the worker a chance to better their life and help their children to get a better education and have a better future. It also means in investing education, safety and health care to maintain a healthy and prospering work force (and one with an income to spend to boost the domestic economy)

But Free Market capitalism is about treating workers as just another cost factor to be minimized or eliminated.

Yeah, Jong Un’s a nice guy… who murdered his uncle, dispatched a bunch of generals and anyone who might question his authority, and yeah, we should treat him like a nice guy?

By Trump standards, that’s pretty fucked up.

re: #201 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

We are looking at two concepts that overlap but do not fully equate: labor as a commercial commodity and work as a positive social ethos and value. The GOP seems to prefer the former while preaching the latter.

The “dignity of work”, however, lies in giving the worker a chance to better their life and help their children to get a better education and have a better future. It also means in investing in education, safety and health care to maintain a healthy and prospering work force (and one with an income to spend to boost the domestic economy)

But Free Market capitalism is about treating workers as just another cost factor to be minimized or eliminated.

My husband has been in the same business for more than 40 years. One time (long ago) he got financial information from a mine in South Africa who was looking to make a large capital investment and there were two lines for labor costs: Cost of Labor and Cost of Blacks.

He said fuck that and refused to do business with them.

It’s easy to say the poor just need to work harder and not expect handouts when you AREN’T FUCKING POOR!

Seriously, when’s the last time you heard a poor person say: “Nah, I did this to myself. I don’t need help. $6.50/hour at McDonald’s is awesome for me!”

It’s simple…Republican economic policy distills to:

Rich people will do less if they aren’t given more.
Poor people will do more, only if given less.

He completely erased the director’s Latino Mexican identity in the first tweet. Simply referred to him as a white man.. Now. the person seems to be from England and may not get this, but I’m pretty sure Mr Cuaron does not consider himself white and he damned sure would never be considered white if he showed up at port of entry with no ID….

So, we the public are only get access to one third of Cohen’s appearances?

Nevertheless, expect Twitter to be quite busy tomorrow.

I have no problems with this if in fact the reason Cohen is doing the non-public testimony is to protect him and the overall investigation.

I’m thinking one reason Mueller was a little hesitant to have Cohen go public is because there is a good chance to scare some others out of the corners where they are hiding and it gives cover to other parts of the investigation.

I just hope Cohen’s testimony is enough to scare a few Republican congress folks from further protecting Trump and criticizing Mueller. I want him to let them know Trump is dirtier in all of this than what they may already think. And I do think some of them know Trump is dirty.

Sure that will work on the die-hard Trump suckers.

But over half of America has already figured out Trump is a pathological liar and he hired Cohen to lie for him and to cover up those crimes.

I kinda like the fact that Sarah thinks she can get America to believe Cohen lied on his own and someone like Trump would never condone Cohen’s lying and other crimes.

Sure that will work on the die-hard Trump suckers.

But over half of America has already figured out Trump is a pathological liar and he hired Cohen to lie for him and to cover up those crimes.

There is no doubt in my mind that deep in the recesses of Trump’s rotten mind he would love to be a murderous dictator.

He would also love to tie up and put tape over the mouths of women and do despicable things to them.

We know he is bad, but we may not know just how bad he really is. I think one thing that always stuck with me was his handling of the Central Park 5. He wanted New York to give them the death penalty. Then when they were cleared, he still wanted the death penalty.

This guy has no remorse about anything bad he has ever done. And he could never be rehabilitated. He is a monster.

Not just that, but there’s a genuine concern that the UK might well work to further sabotage the EU from within if it were to stay.

Britain’s longest-standing foreign policy imperative is to prevent any one power - or group of powers - from becoming the dominant force on the European Continent; the Brits have long viewed such a turn of events as an existential threat.

Maybe it really would be better for all concerned to just let Britain go its own way. Like someone here pointed out, Britain could go back in time….not to the Golden Age of its Empire, but more likely, back to the 15th century, when it was a second-tier power, riven by internal dissension.

I think globalism scares far left and right for different reasons. The far right for making us more interconnected regardless of nationality. I know you do genealogy as well. I’ve met cousins in three different countries that I can trace my line to. It’s definitely made me realize how much we create nationality to separate ourselves. The far left I think more understandably worries about workers being exploited in globalization but I think many of them are unable to accept that economies change too.

Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity, which is different from race, which a lot of people don’t get. One is tied to geography/religion/language the other to skin color. Both are social constructs that tell us more about the people who use them (particularly how they use them) than the people they actually apply to.

You mean Mengele :) but yeah. I do remember hearing about that town. It looks like it could be in Bavaria but it’s actually in Argentina. But yeah and I know Jamaica isn’t Hispanic but Bob Marley’s first producer was a man of Chinese ancestry. The world I think is a lot more diverse than people think. Even within my own lily white ancestry, there’s some interesting things like those Irish who are descended from people who were living in Ireland when the Normans invaded, Norman-Irish, and later the Anglo-Irish and Scots-Irish, the latter two I haven’t found any ancestral ties to but that doesn’t mean they’re not there. And in Slovakia, the Carpatho Rusyns intermarried with the native Slovaks and also Hungarians for generations.

It’s a party that believes that all their positions are correct and any other position is wrong. Any action in support of their position is correct and any action in support of “wrong” position is de facto wrong.

I don’t even think they believe all their positions are correct. I think they decided to go all in on Trump because he is doing what they couldn’t do. They known a lot of it is wrong. You’d have to be a complete dunce to not know it. And they are not stupid. They are politically criminal at this point.

This probably needs more exploration:

America’s Biggest Charities Are Funneling Millions to Hate Groups From Anonymous Donors

A Sludge analysis of recent tax filings shows that, from mid-2014 through 2017, these four donor-advised funds combined to give nearly $11 million to 34 groups that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) considers to be hate groups, according to its 2017 hate map. These hate groups include 12 anti-LGBT groups, 12 anti-Muslim groups, eight anti-immigrant groups, one white nationalist group, and one radical traditional Catholic group.

Bass? Get her a copy of this album:
amazon.com

Charles Mingus does some amazing playing and combined with the equal genius of the the other two (Duke Ellington on Piano and Max Roach’s drums) and you have one of the all time greatest jazz albums that remains painfully unknown.

Mingus!
Excellent suggestion. If she also wants to hear more contemporary bassists, Edgar Meyer and Dave Holland are worth a listen. And there is that super obscure, totally unknown bass player Charles played with… what’s that guys name? Stanley Clarke!

Since I am so late catching up with this thread I suppose all these and more will have already been mentioned. Oh well…

Yeah, that seems to be one of the biggest criticisms of Alita. I know Robert Rodriguez directed it, but frankly, it’s kind of a shame that James Cameron didn’t direct it - a live-action Alita film has been his passion for at least 20+ years (it was in the late 90’s when I first heard about a Cameron-directed film adaptation).

They do hate being reminded that even when they had small arms parity, they still got curb stomped by the government’s forces. But that fantasy is strong. Especially when they start blathering about the VC with no understanding of the international supply and support of them.

I’m pretty sure Russia and China will be willing to help out the barbarians.

Which would make them just like the VC.

ETA: Guerrilla warfare works only when the power being fought against has a place to run to, or they are monumentally incompetent.

Guerrilla warfare worked in Vietnam and Afghanistan because it became too expensive to remain. And the Americans and Russians could return home.

It worked in Cuba and Nicaragua because the local governments were idiots.

I doubt it would work in America as the government isn’t completely incompetent and they have nowhere to run. Plus guerrillas generally suffer 10 to 50 casualties for every casualty inflicted on the government.

Quick probably apocryphal story.

After the war a US Army officer met a Vietnamese officer.

“You know,” says the American, “You never beat us in the field.”

“That is true, ” is the reply. “It is also irrelevant.”
