Scott Mulvahill: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 18, 2019 | Bob Boilen — Scott Mulvahill has been trying to win the Tiny Desk Contest for each of its four years. He’s always been one of our favorites, though he’s never been our winner. The double bassist entered his song, “Begin Againers” in 2016 and though it wasn’t the winning entry, we all loved it so much, I invited him to my desk to perform his extraordinary song. He opened the Tiny Desk with it, only this time he was joined by bandmates Jesse Isley and Josh Shilling who shared vocal harmonies.

Scott Mulvahill honed his craft touring with the great bluegrass mandolin player Ricky Skaggs. “Playing bluegrass with him is like playing jazz with Miles Davis,” Scott told the Tiny Desk crowd.

Each of the three tunes Scott Mulvahill played represents different aspects of his creative spirit. He challenges himself to find ways to use the bass as a solo instrument, but its most common role is to accompany others. So he brought his band along for his most rollicking song, “Gold Plated Lie.” There’s a bit of Jackson Browne in his voice and a bit of Paul Simon shows through in his self-reflective words.

For the final tune, the title track from his self-released and current album Himalayas, Scott Mulvahill goes solo, brings out a bow for that bass and we hear a spaciousness I don’t often find in the Nashville world he inhabits. This is a perfect introduction to an artist with enormous talent and an artist seeking to stretch his musical world.

I’ve seen the quotes about Sanders raising a whole lot of money and having a whole lot of initial support - one million volunteers already - and I find it funny. I doubt these people really thought that the candidate that came in second in the 2008 Democratic primary was allowed to claim an infrastructure advantage in 2016. Now that the second place finisher in the last primary is running again, it’s just funny that it’s now an advantage.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that I’m not really worried about him. He’s going to get beaten in the debates and on the trail.

It all depends how fractured the rest of the field stays. Bernie comes with a built in base, if the other candidates don’t consolidate quickly he could get a lot of early wins. momentum is really important in the early states.

Looks like it is time to send the boy wonder to India/Pakistan to save mankind.

Trump most likely: Jared is more than capable at making great strides in achieving peace in the world. With my input and great negotiating tactics we will convince these two great countries to make business and not war. They both have ocean front properties, why not turn them into hotels and condos. It’s a beautiful area and they tell me very warm. We can make it paradise! We should do that in Iran too. It’s right there. They could be the The Eastern Riviera. Build buildings and not bombs. I just came up with that. I think that is pretty good…everybody likes a warm building.

I watched the CNN townhall with Bernie. Same old - same old but he certainly is effective at responding to the progressive base; no details on paying for things but then Republicans never explain how they are paying for tax cuts. The one question he did not answer was Wolf’s query as to when he was releasing his taxes — promised he would but no definite target date. You would think he would have prepared an effective response but he is clearly trying to evade the issue.

And it doesn’t even give you the state of the race right now because this isn’t the final field-Hickenlooper, Biden and a few others are still mulling getting in the race. We won’t know much more until June or so then the final candidates enter the race and we have a set field and that field starts interacting with each other.

I have friends in/from both countries, and so I am worried for them. Trump is liable to say or do something that will just make things worse.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong-Un is in his armored train crossing China on a 60-hour trip to Hanoi from the NK border. The train passed through my city, but naturally I missed seeing it because Kim’s train schedule is a closely guarded secret. There have been crossings closed to vehicular traffic and normal train schedules disrupted because of the Kim train, so lots of Chinese people are pissed. Any remarks on social media about it are swiftly censored by the government, though.

I have friends in/from both countries, and so I am worried for them. Trump is liable to say or do something that will just make things worse.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong-Un is in his armored train crossing China on a 60-hour trip to Hanoi from the NK border. The train passed through my city, but naturally I missed seeing it because Kim’s train schedule is a closely guarded secret. There have been crossings closed to vehicular traffic and normal train schedules disrupted because of the Kim train, so lots of Chinese people are pissed. Any remarks on social media about it are swiftly censored by the government, though.

One can only hope that the leaders of all the other countries of the world realize that Trump is a buffoon and ignore him completely and not let anything he says spur any action on their part.

Greendale School District has condemned a five-second video shared over the weekend across Facebook that allegedly showed two students using racial slurs.

The video shows what appears to be a white male student playfully holding another white male student down and telling him to “say it.” The student being held down says the n-word and calls black people “animals.” Afterwards, laughter can be heard in the background.

Although that incident appears to involve students of high-school age, the district confirmed a second racist video, this one posted on YouTube, apparently involving a Greendale elementary school. I for one thought it was telling that Bernie won Washington when it was a caucus but lost when they did a primary. The caucus counted. I find caucuses undemocratic and I find it especially funny that the Bros bitch about closed primaries but are fine with caucuses. I prefer open primaries for all their problems over caucuses that said.

Of course I misspoke when I said Washington used to be the only state with open “primaries”. At that time all we had were caucuses. What I meant was you didn’t have to register as a member of any party. I’ve been questioned on that, and can’t swear to it (WA being the only state like that, I mean), but my geology teacher registered a bunch of us for the first time when the voting age went down and he was a state representative, so you’d think he’d know what he was talking about.

I’ve seen the quotes about Sanders raising a whole lot of money and having a whole lot of initial support - one million volunteers already - and I find it funny. I doubt these people really thought that the candidate that came in second in the 2008 Democratic primary was allowed to claim an infrastructure advantage in 2016. Now that the second place finisher in the last primary is running again, it’s just funny that it’s now an advantage.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that I’m not really worried about him. He’s going to get beaten in the debates and on the trail.

So far, since the Indian AF attack on something in Pakistani controlled territory, there have been no reprisals. Pakistan claims nothing was hit except a bunch of trees and rocks. India claims that they took out a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp and killed a bunch of terrorists there.

The narratives allow both sides to claim that they won and enough plausible deniability that it can be a one-off that doesn’t lead either/both sides to escalate.

Still, can’t imagine that Pakistan will be happy with the attack, or the fact that Indian fighter jets slipped into Pakistani territory without too much effort. There’s probably more going on here than meets the eye as the Pakistani government knows that these terror groups operate on their territory but the government can’t directly crack down without reprisals against the government itself.

If things stay silent over next 24 hours, I think we could say that this was a one-off.

The “dignity of work”, however, lies in giving the worker a chance to better their life and help their children to get a better education and have a better future. It also means in investing education, safety and health care to maintain a healthy and prospering work force (and one with an income to spend to boost the domestic economy)

But Free Market capitalism is about treating workers as just another cost factor to be minimized or eliminated.

I have no problems with this if in fact the reason Cohen is doing the non-public testimony is to protect him and the overall investigation.

I’m thinking one reason Mueller was a little hesitant to have Cohen go public is because there is a good chance to scare some others out of the corners where they are hiding and it gives cover to other parts of the investigation.

I just hope Cohen’s testimony is enough to scare a few Republican congress folks from further protecting Trump and criticizing Mueller. I want him to let them know Trump is dirtier in all of this than what they may already think. And I do think some of them know Trump is dirty.

I think globalism scares far left and right for different reasons. The far right for making us more interconnected regardless of nationality. I know you do genealogy as well. I’ve met cousins in three different countries that I can trace my line to. It’s definitely made me realize how much we create nationality to separate ourselves. The far left I think more understandably worries about workers being exploited in globalization but I think many of them are unable to accept that economies change too.

Latino/Hispanic is an ethnicity, which is different from race, which a lot of people don’t get. One is tied to geography/religion/language the other to skin color. Both are social constructs that tell us more about the people who use them (particularly how they use them) than the people they actually apply to.

It’s fascinating to me. I’ve noticed it even on the micro level even within my SiL’s family. That family tree is one I would love to research.

But we believe my mom’s paternal grandfather might have immigrated to Cuba from the Middle East. And there is a fairly long history of racism within a lot of Latin countries, the Spanish and Portuguese empires basically created a caste system with whites (Europeans) on top. And since we are often molded by things that happened long before we were born…

But yeah and I know Jamaica isn’t Hispanic but Bob Marley’s first producer was a man of Chinese ancestry. The world I think is a lot more diverse than people think. Even within my own lily white ancestry, there’s some interesting things like those Irish who are descended from people who were living in Ireland when the Normans invaded, Norman-Irish, and later the Anglo-Irish and Scots-Irish, the latter two I haven’t found any ancestral ties to but that doesn’t mean they’re not there. And in Slovakia, the Carpatho Rusyns intermarried with the native Slovaks and also Hungarians for generations.

Yeah, that seems to be one of the biggest criticisms of Alita. I know Robert Rodriguez directed it, but frankly, it’s kind of a shame that James Cameron didn’t direct it - a live-action Alita film has been his passion for at least 20+ years (it was in the late 90’s when I first heard about a Cameron-directed film adaptation).
