I have sort of the opposite interpretation of this data. It looks like Beto turned out a *LOT* of Democratic-leaning *independents* who don’t regularly vote. He won independents 50-47, per the exit poll, in a state where Republicans typically crush it among independents. https://t.co/klSMHI3xlY

Someone in the last thread made a comment about how the perception of the Democrats as the party that focuses on minorities hurts their standing among whites.
That’s interesting, because the GOP has made it clear they don’t give a shit about minorities, except those few token individuals who shared their jacked up ideology. Thus, the Democratic party is forced to do big things to appeal to minorities lest they (minorities) feel completely maligned by the U.S. political system.
This is not happening at the expense of whites. Just because we aren’t front and center all the time in the progressive moment doesn’t mean we aren’t needed or valued.
The sad truth is this:
For whites, there are two parties to choose from.
For minorities, there is functionally only one.

As far I have been able to find, no.
The Wikipedia list of US National Emergencies is interesting, though. There are still 32 of them in current effect - mainly from the Bush 43 era (9/11 and Iraq-related) and Obama’s Admin (misc. foreign sanctions).
Though AFAICT, Trump’s latest BS is only one of three (out of 59 historically) that is related to mainly domestic, rather than foreign issues (and one of the latter -now ended - was due to an influenza epidemic in 2009).

ok, pat, i’ll play:

- and by the way you said this, you have no problem with states or the SDNY etc investigating things a person did before becoming president, right?
- i mean winning the election in and of itself isnt some kind of automatic ‘pardon’ or something is is?
- also, are you including what may have been illegal activities to actually throw the election (ie he wasnt elected yet)
- and what about the possible issues with the inauguration? Elected but not yet sworn in.

That happened to my one older brother. Married for a good 20 plus years when his wife realized she was gay and not bi- but a lesbian. That was with 3 girls in the family already and all that happy home stuff he thought he was in.
Of course she is old enough to have come from the times when you never ever said anything about maybe being gay. So she played the game and must have decided with all the changes occurring after Reagan times regarding LGBT social advancements it was time to be what she was all along.
My brother was shocked, but he is almost unflappable about anything. So he did his regular shrug of his shoulders and moved on. Everyone is now happy and in new relationships. Girls are cool with it. Such is life.

Until very recently, you were supposed to be straight, especially in the South. Lots of people didn’t figure out they were gay until they’d been in signficant relationships for a long time. That’s why, especially in the South, a number of lesbian families have children, because they’re from when the mom was trying to be “normal.”

Rep. Omar’s repeated anti-Semitic comments have gone far enough. I’m calling on the Speaker to remove her from her Foreign Affairs Committee. No more promoting and empowering her actions on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Real action must be taken.
Rep Omar wears a hijab.
No matter what she ever said or didn’t, this was gonna be the reaction
re: #92 Backwoods_Sleuth
Unpopular opinion but perhaps Rep Omar needs to be more sensitive about her commentary on Israel. Not sure why it’s something she’s focused on in the first place. Not saying that she’s anti-Semitic as Republicans are claiming but surely there are more pressing concerns for her constituents than Israel. My fear is that she’s eventually going to say something explosive which will force Democratic leadership to censure her.

Andy Biggs is my stupid congressman, who spends most of his time so far up Donald Trump’s hind end he can see the short-fingered vulgarian’s tonsils. What’s interesting is this is new for Biggs. His big things are business, getting rid of regulations and abortion. Joan Green was the Democratic candidate for AZ-05 and she’s right. Biggs spends his time going around to businesses and making stealth appearances at evangelical churches (but he’s Mormon). He’s never held a town hall, ever.
re: #76 Dread Pirate Whitebeard
As someone with a Ph.D. in military history, let me say, first, foreign nations *have* invaded the U.S. from the sea (during the Revolutionary War & the War of 1812), and, second, the subsequent paucity of invasions had nothing to do with “gun owners” but a lot to do with oceans.
Let me also point out WWII. I’m not counting Pearl Harbor (bombing runs, but no attempt to land).
But Alaska. There were actual land battles between Japanese and American forces on a few of the Aleutian Islands.

If Israel continues down the path that Netanyahu has set for it, we are going to have to re-evaluate our relationship with them. Bibi has made it clear that there will be no two state solution on his watch. That means a one state solution - and there’s two possible outcomes for a one state solution: a pluralistic, secular state; or, an apartheid state.
And the apartheid state is probably much more likely under Bibi than a pluralistic secular state.

I feel like re-evaluating our relationship with Israel has been at least 5 years or more in the making, at minimum. Netanyahu’s recent moves of shoring up the extreme nationalist right-wing parties there should be setting off massive sirens. The idea that we should be questioning our reflexive defense of Israel is something that should be embraced more, but instead we’re going extra-hard in the other direction of trying to make it illegal to boycott or criticize Israel at all.
And I don’t fault that on Israel as a country as a whole so much as it is, once again, Netanyahu, Likud, and the same psychotic nationalist fervor that seems to link Likud and the GOP as fellow travelers, same way as Putin and his other Boy Band Authoritarians that Trump so adores.

Instead, we may as fucking well live in Fox Nation. It’s only until very recently that other outlets have stopped trying to out-Fox Fox, and that’s been mitigated by the fact that the network is de facto State TV now and doesn’t even really need to compete anymore. Ratings and financials may be on the downswing finally, but they’ve never been more influential and damaging.

Hemmer argues that Fox—which, as the most watched cable news network, generates about $2.7 billion a year for its parent company, 21st Century Fox—acts as a force multiplier for Trump, solidifying his hold over the Republican Party and intensifying his support. “Fox is not just taking the temperature of the base—it’s raising the temperature,” she says. “It’s a radicalization model.” For both Trump and Fox, “fear is a business strategy—it keeps people watching.”

So, respectfully, are we just going to say that because she’s Muslim, she’s not allowed to publicly criticize the government of Israel, or the excessive influence the government of Israel has over US policy, because someone somewhere will find some hint of some antisemitic trope?

I suspect they pay for it as part of a bundle of Fox channels - so the local Fox affiliate, FS1, FS2, the local sports channel, FX, FXX, and FXM. I wonder how much Fox gets from cable/satellite providers for the bundle and if it’s divided up in some way

I’m seeing this situation in much the same way, and this is starting to really irritate me.
Among other things, there was that guest columnist in the WaPo burbling on idiotically about ludicrous things like the Democrats making themselves ‘above suspicion’ as applied to this case.
In this Fox News/Fake News era, no Democrat is above suspicion, for anything, by definition.
Since that columnist is a GOP apparatchik, it isn’t surprising that his advice for Democrats is to commit ritual suicide.

You can’t even make macaroni and cheese with just 5 ingredients, fer chrissake.
1. Macaroni
2. Cheese
3. Milk
4. Butter
5. Flour
6. Salt
7. Pepper
8. Dry mustard
9. Breadcrumbs.
And that’s a simple recipe!

It seems to be more a worry about her comments stirring up a hornets nest in the media and with conservatives giving them ammo to generalize how all Democrats must think this way.
I get the feeling the Democrats would like there to be less of that right now as they work to take down Trump and win more seats in congress and a presidency in 2020.
But we have some fired up young congress members that are itching to get their say. This all needs to be worked out so that everyone can get what they need.

Thanks for pointing that out. It is not all advertising that makes Fox News money. Though lots of advertisers are a big thing to have flowing because it has to do with ratings.
If ratings go away maybe some cable systems ask for a lower fee or decide what tier to put it on which could also affect both cable fees and advertising.
I guess the problem I have with all this is that I don’t equate Israel and Judaism. Most of the Jews I know and have known don’t align with the government of Israel’s policies, especially now.
Bibi Netanyahu is not ‘Pope ‘O’ The Jooze’. He’s a crooked politician who’s demonstrated a willingness to bring terrorists into his government to keep control, which undermines any claims the government of Israel has to being the Good Guys. Primarily because of Evangelicals, the government of Israel has far too much influence in American politics. It’s not money, it’s not magic. It’s end-times prophecy and an eagerness to see somebody mistreating Muslims on the part of the Evangelicals, and for Netanyahu and his party it’s aligning with the party that will give them the greatest leeway and the least criticism.
When Obama was President, I watched as Obama and Sec. Clinton restating the longstanding policy of the United States regarding borders in an eventual peace agreement become characterized as a new and horrible assault on Israel.
It seems as if the worse the Israeli government acts, the less acceptable it has become to criticize it. This is not a workable state of affairs.

Unfortunately, the answer to this question is basically “yes”.
It shouldn’t be so, but political realities in this country are such that “Israel” - broadly defined - is one of those “third rail” issues that have little room for nuance or contrary opinions from the “orthodox” unconditional-and-unquestioning-support position.

The problem is that “Follow the Benjamins,” and “loyalty to Israel” are specifically anti-Semitic tropes. She can criticize both Israeli policies and (some of) its US supporters without thoughtlessly picking up the usages that the worst of people have been using against Jews since forever.
And she’ll be criticized either way, but she won’t trigger those of us who follow the progress of various bigotries if she learns not to follow the usages of the wrong people.
(Some of the problem is that the current freshman class in Congress is mostly naive to the point of childishness in the foreign policy area. The ones I’ve heard all seem to think there are simple solutions to problems that have been around for decades if not centuries. Remember when setting taxes on the rich at 70% was a third rail? That stopped because AOC said it out loud and a whole lot of Democrats finally went “that’s what we wanted to say.” There are plenty of valid criticisms of Isreal that get squashed because somehow Jews are being threatened. Dual loyalties… it’s something that comes up regularly - that a Jew can’t be loyal to the country they live in and that they have loyalties elsewhere - to the Zionists (down the path of conspiracies) or to Israel (the nation state).

It’s the same attack that was leveled at Catholics before, that they had loyalty to the Vatican over America.
I mean, that said, the usage of ‘loyalty to Israel’ seemed aimed less at actual Jews in Congress and more at the Congressment who do act like they are essentially lobbying for the Israeli gov’t, the irony being most of them are fundie types ‘supporting’ Israel for the Rapture. But the way it was worded is definitely pretty loaded. At the same time, it’s hard to breach the subject without running into the ‘criticizing Israel is necessarily antisemitism’ dodge.

I know people who live here who are from Lebanon, Israel and Palestine, and I expect them to have loyalties there.

FYI his right here is a good argument against carrying firearms at all if you don’t face a genuine, plausible threat. It also demonstrates why if you really feel that you must carry a gun in public that it’s generally a terrible idea to keep a round chambered in any semi auto that has a single action trigger mode, especially in a striker fired gun like the Glock. Basically the leather on this guy’s holster got so soft and pliable that it folded under and grabbed the trigger, causing an accidental discharge when he was trying to put on his seatbelt. He got lucky, only blew a hole in his pants and carseat and grazed his thigh.
Seriously, the vast majority of people have no business whatsoever carrying a gun out in public, and the few non law enforcement officers that do have no need to keep a round chambered in a semi auto. If that extra one in the pipe and the second it takes to rack the slide are the difference between life and death you were probably fucked anyway.

I’m surprised she had to make it explicit she wasn’t running. No running around to primary states, no fundraising activity, not even a campaign website. That should be enough to make a statement without sacrificing her dignity. She was owed at least that-not having to lower herself to making an explicit statement.
One group that’s going to be very unhappy-make that two-Berners and Trumpers. No foil this time,. they have to actually campaign on ideas-which they clearly lack-and with people who are horribly inept and flawed.
In a way, it should have been clear all along. If she wanted a rematch, she could have simply kept the shell of a campaign staff and structure all along and announced much sooner than now. Instead she goes on a speaking tour, to Puerto Rico to help, starts a PAC, and resumes her speeches. Hardly activities
meant to enhance her electability.

OK, I got a very demanding “Request for App Review” from Facebook for an app that’s been working and totally following the rules for years, and they want me to jump through a whole bunch of hoops to pass this fucking review, and I’m thinking just fuck Facebook.

Well, I mean, after all, she didn’t take the veil and renounce all worldly cares, and she’s steadfastly refused to simply vanish in a puff of disappointment. I mean, after other people lost their elections for President, they all set themeselves adrift on ice floes, never to be heard from again.
///I mean, Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick, John Fucking McCain made himself a fixture on the Sunday talk shows, and people didn’t spent 2010 and 2011 saying, “Oh, my god! what if he runs again! Why can’t he just go away?”
Speak for yourself!
I said that about McCain.
re: #248 Targetpractice
And the more they do that, the less they will focus on the real people who are running who are not Hillary. Except for Bernie (who isn’t going to win the nomination this time either), the rest of the field so far is who? Things may change if Biden runs.
Trump has run out of cards that he can play here. “Socialism” isnt moving the millennials, and older folks have had twenty some odd years of not fearing it at all. When your example is a country few really know about like Venezuela, it isn’t going to be the boogeyman in this election. It’s been thirty years since people have looked around and been afraid to say really left things for fear that the FBI and other groups might think they are affiliated with some subversive group. So they are saying them now.
Not even the most horse and buggy mind looks for Reds under the bed, not since the only examples anyone can think of are broke Venezuela and broke Cuba, who can hardly keep together themselves, let alone infiltrate groups for some grand scheme of conquest. If an agent from Venezuela infiltrated a group here, he would be more likely to ask for a place to sleep, stay, and eat. We would pity him.

There is data to be mined from people that do not go to Facebook. They want everyone on Facebook, one way or another.
Or, they might take you away to the gulag.
re: #195 The Ghost of Quesos Past
Not trying to be countintuitive guy…processed food is bad…but it’s not “the stuff you can’t recognize” that makes it bad. It’s added sugar, added fat, and how many processed goods are at the foundation starch stamped into different shapes. For some people, the added sodium is an added layer of unhealthiness because they’re not getting enough potassium elsewhere in their diet.
Just guidelines is all
I didn’t adopt the idea as a literal panacea
More like it resonated as guidelines and …if you can
Prepare more of your own food…if your lifestyle allows it
Use real ingredients..when you can
Learn to pay attention to your food
The more you do the more you become aware of things like how much sugar or salt is in this, is it part of a balanced diet etc

This is very cool: Pantone Releases a New Shade of Deep Purple to honor Prince
To honor late legend Prince, Pantone has released a new custom color: Love Symbol #2. Named after the singer-songwriter’s iconic emblem and inspired by his signature Yamaha piano and film, Purple Rain, the deep shade of purple perfectly captures the spirit of the master musician.
The recently released hue was developed by the Pantone Color Institute in collaboration with Prince’s estate. While its official label is PANTONE PQ-7448C, it has been nicknamed Love Symbol #2 as a reference to Mitch Monson’s well-known design. A combination of the symbols for male and female genders, the imagery embodies Prince’s open-minded approach to love and life—a sentiment also evident in his signature style and celebrated discography.

Right, because never in the history of the Washington Post have the reporters delved into the dank and corrupt underbelly of an American presidency.
////////////
Japan is set to outlaw corporal punishment.
It comes in the wake of some very disturbing cases of maltreatment of children by parents. For example:
Harrowing details in a case of child abuse emerged with the arrest June 6 of a couple over the death of their 5-year-old daughter.
In spite of beatings, a near-starvation diet and gross neglect, Yua Funato kept craving her parents’ approval, begging in a notebook to “please, please, please forgive me” and promising to be better behaved.
We can’t even have a discussion about this here in the USA because so many parents see it as their right and religious duty to beat the tar out of children. (See, for example, so-called “blanket training” where infants are put on a blanket and smacked with a wooden spoon if they crawl off.)
My mother used to beat us kids with a metal mesh flyswatter. She took that up after she broke a blood vessel in her hand whaling on us kids. Speaking only for myself, I can tell you all this did was make me into a better liar.

Name those shared interests and values.
Their IT, medical and weapons R&D outclasses ours. Their special ops expertise is something we seek to emulate. Their intel re Islamic terrorist groups is decades ahead of what we can do.
re: #267 mmmirele
Umm, don’t those “blanket trainers” have access to playpens? I used to have one of those big expandable scissor action round things (unsafe because a child can get caught in the Vs at the top-but if you never leave the kid alone in it, it’s fine.) My favorite use for it was to put it around me with the kids outside it if I was doing something unsafe for kiddos. It was big enough to hold the ironing board, for example. Used to make my fellow moms laugh.
Ooooh! I’ve never killed a thread before. A first!

Facebook is maddening.
What is worse, is that some fields of endeavor, like genealogy, have become very Facebook-centric, so if I want to connect to this or that genealogy group I’ve got to use Facebook.
And many people may not realize it but Instagram is just another wing of the empire.
Old people use Facebook, young people use Instagram, same company is mining the data, grandparents and grandchildren.

The law wasn’t changed, Congress simply allowed the Ethics in Government Act to expire rather than renew it, which meant the disbanding of the DOJ Office of Special Counsel.

I’m Jewish. I can’t support Bibi in any way. I watched him shit on Obama with scary bomb cartoons. In our own house.
And we’re supposed to support that?
When Bibi becomes Israel and our support is contingent on him, I’m. Out.
I have hated Bibi since the 1990’s because of his role in contributing to the toxic atmosphere that led to the assassination of Rabin.
I was also infuriated with the reception Trump received at AIPAC from the audience in the 2016. Before then, I had been toying with the idea of attending the AIPAC annual meeting in 2017 but that turned me off to the organization. Netanyahu made clear his support for Republicans and the participants at AIPAC showed their enthusiasm for Trump in particular.
