On Saturday, my RW brother seemed to have come around to at least support red flag laws. Now I hear that this has turned out to be the standard GOP response to deal with mass shootings. So, my brother has once again proven that the entire Trump base consists of sheeple (his favorite word!) who go along with whatever the GOP hierarchy proposes, unless their Master the Orange Mussolini declares otherwise.
The slobbering cocksucking by the Râs of the NRMA (National Rifle Maunufacturerâs Association) continues to amaze me. They have had Congressional Legislation sitting in Moscow Mitchâs in-box for 158 days, requiring common sense gun Legislation that is overwhelmingly supported by all citizens, and it has been blocked.
Itâs not video games, itâs not mental health, itâs not prayer in schools, itâs the easy access to guns that you can load 30-round magazines into so that you can kill 9 people in under a minute that are available to committed young white men that are domestic terrorists.
This is not rocket science, this is a simple matter of public policy.
NEW: NRA spent $1.6 million lobbying against background check expansion laws in months leading up to latest mass shootings. The Trump campaign told surrogates today to focus on the president supporting background checks and him calling out white supremacy. https://t.co/sxgA7oAAz0

Theyâre getting dragged in the comment section over this. (Rather unusual for them.)
Such crap like this will continue until the profit motive is taken out of things such as donating a body for scientific research.
I have a small non-zero chance I could develop vCJD due to the mad cow problem in western Europe when I was stationed there. I am already banned from donating blood. (This is also why I am opposed to an opt-out sort of option for organ donation proposed by some people: as of yet there is no way to detect the prions which cause the disorder.)
If I was to request my brain go to a neurology department to study that, some for-profit middleman might wind up selling it instead to some folks testing rifles or something.
Folks in the comments are rightly arguing that capitalism at any cost will reduce the will of people to donate their own bodies for research.
There is no need to blow bodies up to study the effects of IEDs, that excuse by the Army is crap. We know what happens to bodies when they are subject to high explosives.
Their argument was they were testing for weaknesses in armoured vehicles. Why werenât they blowing up IEDs under armoured vehicles then?

Mike Huckabee: Thoughts And Prayers Are âOnly Thingâ That Will Stop Mass Shootings (Goes to Huffington Post)

This weekendâs mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, have many people demanding that something be done to stop gun violence.
However, Mike Huckabee insists thereâs only one solution to curbing the violence and itâs â you guessed it â âthoughts and prayers,â that time-honored solution of pretending to do something without actually doing anything.

and of course threats of

etc.
Why we canât have nice things: Drug companies making their own generics, selling them at higher prices than other genericsâŠand thwarting competition, often paying competitors to stay out of the market. Awesome.
Lawmakers who created the modern generic-drug industry in the 1980s never imagined anything like this â brand-pharma companies maximizing profits by appearing to compete with themselves.
But it goes on all the time. In fact, there are now nearly 1,200 authorized generics approved in the U.S., according to the Food and Drug Administration. While these might look like products that would push prices down, authorized generics can be as profitable as, if not more profitable than, brand-name drugs.
âŠ
Last year, authorized generics appeared at the rate of about once a week. High-profile examples in recent years included Mylanâs generic version of the EpiPen anti-allergy injector, introduced to soothe public outrage after the company raised the brand price 400%. In March, Eli Lilly said it would launch a less expensive generic of its Humalog insulin, whose branded list price has also soared.Of all the ways drug companies try to protect sales as patents expire â changing doses, adding ingredients, seeking approval to treat new diseases â authorized generics are by far the most profitable, returning $50 for every dollar invested, research firm Cutting Edge Information calculated in 2015.
âŠ
Tactics like this can âstave off generic competition and make sure that generics canât get much of a foothold when they do get to market,â said Robin Feldman, a professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law, who studies pharma policy. âThatâs the game. And drug companies have become masters at this.âAuthorized copycats may help explain why relatively few true generics are reaching the market despite a surge in approvals, analysts say.
The 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act founded the modern generic business by establishing rules for safety and competition, including granting six months of market exclusivity to the first generic rival to each brand. The idea was to give the first mover a profitable head start to attack the established pill.
âŠ
The mere threat of an authorized generic can also smother competition.A 2013 Supreme Court ruling challenged deals in which brands blatantly paid rivals to keep generics off the market. So pharma firms came up with an alternative: They could would hold fire on an authorized clone if generic firms agreed to delay launching their products or gave some other concession, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Both sides win. The brand stretches its monopoly beyond the life of the patent, while the generic firm avoids facing an authorized rival later on.
Authorized generics can generate outsize profits in yet another way: as a method to game Medicaid contracts that costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars a year, according to investigators for the Health and Human Services Department.
Brand-pharma companies routinely âsellâ authorized generics to a corporate affiliate at a sharp discount, establishing an artificial wholesale price, said Edwin Park, a research professor who studies Medicaid at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.

The US military even had a rule banning members with a history of domestic violence from wearing a sidearm.
They could drive tanks, fly attack helicopters or launch missiles, but not tote a pistol.
Obama didnât condone white supremacists and right wing extremists.
He called for sensible gun control and the GOP and NRA used that as a selling point to get racists and bigots and gun humpers to buy still more guns.
The guns are the problem. Theyâve been the problem.â lawhawk (@lawhawk) August 6, 2019
Trumpâs right back at the white supremacist racist crap, attacking Obama because Trump (correctly) deduced that Obama was talking about Trump and Trumpâs racist actions.
Trump is a white supremacist, and Obama called him out for doing nothing in the face of gun violence in the US. Itâs also another reminder that one of Trumpâs first actions in the WH was to roll back an Obama rule that made it harder for those with mental illness to get guns by feeding SSI mental health info into the gun database used for background checks.
Trump made it easier for those with mental illness to get guns.
The GOP doesnât want to provide health coverage for those with mental illness with their ongoing assault on the ACA, Medicare, and Medicaid. They continue their assault on those with preexisting medical conditions (mental health is a preexisting condition).
The GOP would rather focus on video games despite fact that US uses video games at a lower rate than Japan or South Korea - which have almost no gun violence at all, let alone few if any mass shootings.
Why?
Itâs the easy availability of guns. The GOP/NRA donât want to change the calculus. They didnât change it after Scalise was nearly assassinated. They didnât change it after Giffords was nearly assassinated. Heck, they fought changing the laws after Reagan was nearly assassinated. They refuse to act after Sandy Hook.
The GOP/NRA solution to every act of gun violence is to demand more gun sales. Hannity proposes putting armed guards at every school and mall. He wants a fascist police state, even though Texas and Ohio are open carry states where anyone could get guns. Guns didnât deter either El Paso or Dayton mass shootings. Guns enabled them with easy access to weapons of mass murder.
Strong gun laws are the answer. States should follow the NY, CA, or MA gun laws, which help result in low gun death rates in those states. If every state adopted those rules - aka a national policy - weâd see far fewer gun deaths. Weâd even see fewer mass shootings. Why? Because all the empirical evidence shows that strong gun laws prevent gun deaths.
And for those bots and gun humpers who point to Chicago as a failure of strong gun laws, thatâs actually counterfactual.
Many of the guns used in crimes in Chicago Illinois come from out of state - where the gun laws are weaker. Itâs actually the evidence that strong nationwide gun laws would reduce gun violence everywhere, including Chicago.

All those people who praise the Invisible Hand never really read Adam Smith, he made it clear that markets need to be regulated so that they benefit everyone, producers and consumers, employers and employees.

Interesting: Official Cybersecurity Review Finds U.S. Military Buying High-Risk Chinese Tech
While its the major defense programs and operations that have dominated the headlines in the escalating cyber warfare standoff between the U.S. and its adversariesâChina and Russia in particular, a new report issued by the U.S. militaryâs Inspector General has highlighted the âmicro-purchasesâ of everyday IT equipment as a serious risk. In particular, the report focuses on the continued acquisition of products âwith known cybersecurity vulnerabilitiesâ and on products excluded from other branches of government but which had not been removed from DOD procurement listsâthis includes Chinese surveillance technology that is now banned.
Despite U.S. Department of Defense strategists admitting that cyber risks now âkeep them awake at night,â the IG report found that significant purchases of âCOTS information technology items with known cybersecurity risksâ were made last year. It is estimated that â70 to 80% percent of the components that comprise DOD systems are COTS items.â The heavily redacted IG report highlights âat leastâ $33 million of Government Procurement Card purchases of equipment from the likes of Lenovo, Lexmark and GoPro. As a result, it warns, âadversaries could exploit known cybersecurity vulnerabilities that exist in COTS items, and missions critical to national security could be compromised.â

Chinaâs already lined up Russia and Brazil to fill the gap. Those farmers are benefiting. American farmers get a fat zero. Theyâre stuck with glut of farm product and no where to sell it. That means they lose a perishable good, and saddled with the losses.

so it is foreign retaliatory tariffs that are the culprit, not the clueless orangutan who started this trade war in the first place
Of course, thatâs going to be the official Administration line: it has numerous advantages as a strategy:
1. It puts the blame for farmersâ problems on the âunfairâ Chinese: as usual in the Trump Admin.: they have a âsinister foreign powerâ to dump on. To divert responsibility from their own actions, naturally.
2. Point 1 simply feeds into the stock Trumpian themes of self-righteousness and victimization which he has made the hallmark of the shabby travesty which passes for US foreign policy these days.
3. It lets the Administration hold out prospects of billions of dollars in handouts to the usual Corporate Interests, neatly disguised as âhelping farming familiesâ or whatever.
4. It provides a handy cudgel to beat critics of the policy (i.e âwhy do Democrats hate American Farmers?â, etc.)
Of course, one might ask the question of how a policy of a US Administration more-or-less consciously destroying a major agricultural export market, then begging for billions in taxpayer funding to make up for said lost markets jibes with a supposedly âfree marketâ - but then, see Point 1 aboveâŠ
re: #157 makeitstop

Democrats care about the ideology of the shooter only to the extent that we can figure out how to stop the radicalization. It pains me to even type this, but if you think that Warren has said anything that would incite violence (particularly what appears to be something rooted in the world of incels and gross misogyny), then you probably need written instructions on how to breather. And of course, Cornyn knows this.
But aside from all of that, even if the guy was a true blue progressive, Democrats would not forego gun control legislation. Democrats want to pass reasonable regulations irrespective of the shooterâs ideology.

I think thereâs still a couple of them on Reddit. Thereâs a subreddit called âTop Minds of Redditâ where they mock incels, conspiracy theorists, Trumpites, RWNJâs, LWNJâs, homophobes, etc.
That sub serves as mockery and also keeps tabs on the hate groups running around Reddit. Theyâve gotten a couple of subreddits shut down and their efforts are believed to be what got âThe Donaldâ subreddit quarantined.

China did call for cessation of purchases of agricultural products from the US. No tariffs. Just shut down the import of raw agricultural products sold by American farmers.
Chinaâs already lined up Russia and Brazil to fill the gap. Those farmers are benefiting. American farmers get a fat zero. Theyâre stuck with glut of farm product and no where to sell it. That means they lose a perishable good, and saddled with the losses.
Trump just fucked his base. Does his base care, or do they think this is winning.

whatâs your backup plan?
and dont say waiting for a future government subsidy is your plan
re: #167 Jay C
4. It provides a handy cudgel to beat critics of the policy (i.e âwhy do Democrats hate American Farmers?â, etc.)Of course, one might ask the question of how a policy of a US Administration more-or-less consciously destroying a major agricultural export market, then begging for billions in taxpayer funding to make up for said lost markets jibes with a supposedly âfree marketâ - but then, see Point 1 aboveâŠ
âthey should have sucked it up and let us have our tariffs without respondingâ is an absolutely boneheaded, stunningly stupid way of thinking about global trade and foreign policy

Senator Warren did nothing which could have motivated the Ohio shooter. The same is not true for Trump and the Texas shooter.
When totalitarians speak of mental illness, itâs a threat. This is laying the groundwork for calling dissidents mentally ill to justify confinement; dissidents of color with publicly acknowledged health issues will be among the first targets under this policy. https://t.co/BRC3h4Zt0V

- yes itâs terrorism; of a sort
- unless thereâs a clear message left behind (assuming dead shooter), or motivation is otherwise crystal clear, weâre left guessing as to why
- and if weâre just guessing then the point of causing the carnage and stoking the fear in the innocent public - to effect some sort of change - is lost.
- and if there is no point, or one that cant be discerned, then itâs just meaningless, random chaos perpetrated by anyone who has the wherewithal to buy the weapon
itâs a cowardâs way of making some kind of muddled statement about being in charge or control or having power overâŠsomething, and done so badly that no one gets what the message even is

China can absorb the pain more - and they can cover it up far more effectively than Trumpworld could.
We have more transparent economic data, and all the data is showing that Trumpâs trade war is heavily damaging the agricultural sector and is causing a slowdown in the economy. Itâs not going to get better with further currency manipulations or interest rate cuts by the US either. Itâs going to lead us into a recession because Trumpâs actions destabilize and cause chaos - the opposite of what companies want (stability and consistent policies). Companies are looking to preserve their wealth and avoid the storm, so theyâre not coming back to the US. Theyâre going elsewhere - shifting production and reducing inventory.
None of this is good.

just looking at the morning consult polling data

his net approval by state has decreased in every state since inauguration
every state by double digits (at least 10%, some in the upper 20âs and 30âs) except hawaii that was 9 but heâs been underwater there the whole time
that doesnt mean heâs not net positive in some states - ie alabama, wyoming, idaho
net -1 in nebraska, florida, north carolina

But Trump thinks this is winning.
Trump is the same fucknut who bankrupted casinos 6 times. Heâs the same guy who failed at football, airlines, liquor, steaks, and even water.

The lawsuits argue the law violates the U.S. Constitution by creating an extra requirement to run for president and deprives citizens the right to vote for their chosen candidates. The Constitution puts just three requirements on presidential candidates: That they are natural born citizens, 35 or older and a U.S. resident for at least 14 years.
nope nope nope
some people are natural born some are not
some are over 35, some are not
some are us residents for 14 years, some are not
