After our hunter/gatherer expedition to town, I’m worn out. I need a nap.
If I were a Trump staffer, at this point I’d be asking (loudly and often) what the point of going forward with debates is after this week. Before tonight, you could possibly make the argument that comparing Trump as “virile and competent” against Biden as “senile and incompetent” could be enough to swing a few crucial districts on Election Night.
After tonight? HA! Donny insisted upon sitting down for his entire “town hall” session and lied out his ass so hard that he was in danger of blowing his o-ring. Versus Biden tonight who stood the entire time, answered questions with competency, and even respected a voter when it was pointed out that he’d interrupted their question.
What is a debate that Trump is making no effort to prepare for and thinks he can repeat tonight’s performance at going to do but further the impression that he is the one who is too old and lost to be trusted with the nuclear codes?

I imagine that is the big reason that his campaign is not trying to talk him out of the debates: They think this might be their “ace in the hole,” that if he gives a great performance then it will make up for all those ad buys they had to pull out of, and if he does poorly they can spin something about his being “genuine” or slip rumors to the press that Joe was “coached.”

Drag Queen claims victory over legislator who voted against marriage equality in Delaware upset (Raw Story)
On Tuesday, Delaware was the final state to hold their 2020 primary election.
The race to represent the 27th district turned nasty, when incumbent Rep. Earl Jaques (D-Glasgow) attacked his openly gay challenger, Eric Morrison, for appearing at a drag show.
“That is so far off-base for our district, it’s unbelievable,” Jaques told The News Journal in October of 2019. “You wonder what the point is. You can have fundraisers, I don’t care about that. But dressing in drag? Really?”
Morrison has performed as a female for nearly a quarter of a century, the newspaper reported.
“I’m not sure he represents the people who attend those places of religion,” said Jaques, who is Christian. “If he’s actually having a fundraiser in drag, I don’t think those churches would endorse that … I’m just saying it’s a little different, that’s for sure.”

Jaques voted against both marriage equality and against abolishing conversion therapy in 2013.

Well, there’s the appearance of a late-stage rodent copulation, due to the time in the election cycle.
That doesn’t mean discount Ms. Dorris, her story will be checked by everyone, just like Ms. Reade’s story was.
Considering the wake of wreckage Mr. Trump has behind him regarding women, that alone lend some credibility to her claims … but also offers an opportunity for Republicans to throw a monkey wrench in the works.
In any case, if her claims are true, I doubt it matters much to Deplorables.

My belief for the longest time is they were hoping for another Al Franken scenario: Get a conga line of women who’d accuse Biden of being a serial “sexual harasser” while floating the same set of pics around that supposedly showed his “preying on women” behavior. The problem was that they women they found almost universally admitted that he’d either apologized for his behavior or that they understood he wasn’t being a perv but is an old-fashioned guy who sometimes has trouble respecting personal space. Plus there wasn’t a media explosion like with the Franken allegations, while Dems have come to realize that the way they treated Franken was deplorable.
They are still pushing the “mental decline” narrative although Trump gives us daily updates on the progress of his dementia.

It’s probably my age, but these days I just don’t find much of the small-screen, or even large-screen, entertainment products of interest. So much lazy derivative blah….
I did find the recent series Avenue 5 humorous. It doesn’t get that good of reviews on IMDB, but I think that is because the comedy is of a definite nature that is less appealing to the US mass market. It strikes me as a bit British in the nature of its comedy.
Strangely enough, the children’s animated series Infinity Train caught my eye. It’s very charming and not insulting even to this old person. But there are some episodes in season 2 and 3 that strike me as not friendly to young children - too much violence (and death.) Some of the articles written that interview the creators mention this change in tone.
The Radcliffe/Buscemi production Miracle Workers I found humorous in the first season, but when the 2nd season came out and it was an entirely new show I lost interest quickly.
But on the whole my eyes just gloss over when I try out so many of the productions. The Marvel (and DC and Star Trek and….) franchises just whiz past me and I just can’t get into them.
Most of all I think there is too much emphasis on production technology (especially computer generated graphics) and nowhere near enough good material (written stories and scripts) to be worthy of all that production money.

‘I Could Show You Stuff You Wouldn’t Believe:’ Gravediggers Speak Out About Horrifying Conditions (Vice)
Gravediggers employed by one of the country’s largest cemetery and funeral home corporations, StoneMor, are battling for their first union contract—amid a COVID-related increase in burials.
In April, 13 gravediggers at Beth Israel, a Jewish cemetery in a working class New Jersey township across the street from one of the state’s largest malls, buried roughly 300 bodies—many of them presumed by workers to be victims of COVID-19.
In a typical month, the crew at Beth Israel Cemetery digs between 50 and 100 graves. During the peak of the coronavirus outbreak in New Jersey and neighboring New York City, where the virus tore through many Hasidic Jewish neighborhoods with ties to Beth Israel, the gravediggers took to the fields at the earliest hours of daylight to pour foundation, lay out wood, dig trenches, set up funerals, carry caskets, and fill graves with backhoes. Gravediggers say they often worked ten-and-a-half-hour shifts, and have not gotten hazard pay and only sporadic bathroom and lunch breaks, according to Teamsters Local 469, the gravediggers’ union.
“I’d never seen anything like it in my life. We did 10 to 14 burials every day for six weeks,” a gravedigger who works at Beth Israel told Motherboard. A burial schedule obtained by Motherboard shows a day in April, for example, in which 10 burials and 5 mausoleum entombments were scheduled in a four-and-a-half-hour period. Workers say it was at times impossible to complete all the burials in the allotted time.
“We had such a high volume of work and so few workers that we had to leave people’s loved ones in graves left open for four to seven hours, and even overnight, going against Jewish tradition,” he continued. “I don’t think families would have appreciated it much to learn that that happened.”

In this case, it’s not the gig economy. The gravediggers are employees of one of the largest cemetery companies in the country.
The allegations against the company include desecration of the graves, not caring for this particular cemetery (people pay extra for “eternal” care but that care of the gravesites is not being provided), flooding of some gravesites from the water table below, collapsed headstones, &c.
The problem is capitalism. The company is consolidating family-owned funeral homes and privately-run cemeteries, then the company is cutting costs. Since the company went live on the Stock Exchange, the price of its shares has collapsed.
The gravediggers allege wage theft of overtime pay, outdated unsafe or polluting equipment, &c. They’ve filed cases with New Jersey, OSHA, and EPA.
When family members call the company which runs the Jewish cemetery to complain about conditions, “there’s nothing we can do.”
There’s also nothing the federal government will do, so long as it’s run by conservatives.
—-
By contrast, the single cemetery in my town is owned by the village government. (Well, it’s not actually in town, it’s about a mile north, but the cemetery is part of the incorporated village.)
All care for the cemetery is paid for in the village budget. Gravediggers aren’t employed there but are paid as needed (and much more than what the gravediggers are at that Jewish cemetery in New Jersey are).
There are no toppled headstones, no water boiling up into graves (that can be a problem in any cemetery but there are measures which can be employed to avoid that … which the company running the cemetery in New Jersey isn’t doing because that cuts into corporate profits), no overgrown gravesites with weeds, &c.
If any of that did happen in our town cemetery, the cemetery board and the village board would be strung up.
My wife got an E-mail from Hulu notifying her the new season of “Archer” has begun there.
We’ll probably take “Dark Shadows” breaks for that … the plot follows Sterling Archer as he wakes up from his coma. I’m sure “phrasing” will take up a portion of the dialogue.

In Italy, especially some of the prestigious cemeteries, graves are sometimes leased. Your descendants don’t make the payment, you can be evicted.

My wife and I have a reservation here at Rose Hill Cemetery with a couple of plots already purchased (cemetery plots are very inexpensive in rural Nebraska … my brother-in-law considered buying a bunch of them here and selling them to people in Texas).
We’re not the sort to put up a headstone while we’re still alive, which seems like asking for trouble. At the moment there is a park bench on our future home.

Time for a deflection from Trump:
TikTok and WeChat: US to ban app downloads in 48 hours (BBC, twenty-five minutes ago)
TikTok and WeChat will be banned from US app stores from Sunday, unless President Donald Trump agrees to a last-minute deal.
The Department of Commerce said it would bar people in the US from downloading the messaging and video-sharing apps through any app store on any platform.
The Trump administration says the companies threaten national security and could pass user data to China. But China and both companies deny this.
While the US government says this is a matter of national security, TikTok claims the proposed ban is motivated by politics.

Not as hard as you might think.
When my first wife’s father died in Florida, it was the family’s wish that he be buried in his hometown in northeastern Mississippi.
Long story about why he did it I won’t relate here, but after the funeral in Bartow, Florida, her eldest brother rented a van and drove his father’s body to Mississippi for a second service and burial there.

The appropriate response to any variation of “What about Tara Reade?” is “What about her?” She dropped off the radar months ago when the media began to realize that nothing added up, none of her “witnesses” were contemporaneous, she kept changing her allegations, and she was caught fibbing about her credentials in order to collect paychecks as an “expert witness.”
Like I said above, the only way you can continue to claim to “believe” Tara is by spinning conspiracy theories about hidden files at the University of Delaware and everybody who knew the woman at the time she worked in Joe’s office choosing to lie about rape and sexual harassment to protect him.

Not just in Germany. Anyone else old enough to recall the flap when Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris was going to evict Jim Morrison? Fans, IIRC, had to raise the scratch to renew his lease. (Or maybe his family).
Forest burials are gaining popularity in Germany, but the Catholic Church is against them, finding them “too pagan” and will not allow priests to attend forest funerals or bless gravesites.

U.S. Image Plummets Internationally as Most Say Country Has Handled Coronavirus Badly
Since Donald Trump took office as president, the image of the United States has suffered across many regions of the globe. As a new 13-nation Pew Research Center survey illustrates, America’s reputation has declined further over the past year among many key allies and partners. In several countries, the share of the public with a favorable view of the U.S. is as low as it has been at any point since the Center began polling on this topic nearly two decades ago.
For instance, just 41% in the United Kingdom express a favorable opinion of the U.S., the lowest percentage registered in any Pew Research Center survey there. In France, only 31% see the U.S. positively, matching the grim ratings from March 2003, at the height of U.S.-France tensions over the Iraq War. Germans give the U.S. particularly low marks on the survey: 26% rate the U.S. favorably, similar to the 25% in the same March 2003 poll.
Part of the decline over the past year is linked to how the U.S. had handled the coronavirus pandemic. Across the 13 nations surveyed, a median of just 15% say the U.S. has done a good job of dealing with the outbreak. In contrast, most say the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Union have done a good job, and in nearly all nations people give their own country positive marks for dealing with the crisis (the U.S. and UK are notable exceptions). Relatively few think China has handled the pandemic well, although it still receives considerably better reviews than the U.S. response.
Ratings for U.S. President Donald Trump have been low in these nations throughout his presidency, and that trend continues this year. Trump’s most negative assessment is in Belgium, where only 9% say they have confidence in the U.S. president to do the right thing in world affairs. His highest rating is in Japan; still, just one-quarter of Japanese express confidence in Trump.
Attitudes toward Trump have consistently been much more negative than those toward his predecessor, Barack Obama, especially in Western Europe. In the UK, Spain, France and Germany, ratings for Trump are similar to those received by George W. Bush near the end of his presidency.
Trump less trusted than leaders of Germany, France, UK, Russia and China

A Massachusetts high school student went to in-person classes on the first day of school despite having tested positive for coronavirus days earlier, officials said.
Now, about 30 people who came in contact with the student at Attleboro High School are under a two-week quarantine.
The mayor of Attleboro, a city about 39 miles southwest of Boston, said the student was tested Sept. 9 and that the positive result came in Sept. 11. The student then went to school for the first day of classes on Sept. 14.
Mayor Paul Heroux said a public health nurse for the city spoke to the family on Tuesday and confirmed that the parents had known for days that their child had the virus before sending him to school.
“There’s no question about whether or not the parent knew,” Heroux said.

Yeah, well, the big problem (in political terms) is that a lot of this foreign-relations stuff is pretty irrelevant to a huge segment of the American electorate. When it comes to the RTW, Trump, (and “Trumpism”) appeals to the sort of self-referential nativism that can be summed up as:
1. “Who cares what those Stupid Fucking Foreigners think?” and
2. “If Trump is pissing off the SFFs he must be doing something right!”
Basically the “own the libs” strategy projected on the world stage. Mainly because Trump and his vile regime know that their “base” has extremely limited expectations for the Administration’s foreign policy:
A) Mindless reflexive support for Israel
B) Mindless reflexive dumping on China
C) Obsessive fixation on being “ripped off” financially.
And any other issues revert immediately to points 1) and 2).

Sorority and fraternity members and their supporters have responded with a petition and letter on the website change.org.
The letter maintains that UNL “failed to provide any justification for its public targeting” of the Greek organizations and asks that the suspensions be reconsidered.
UNL has said some members of the six Greek chapters failed to avoid large gatherings, wear masks and maintain 6 feet of distance from one another.

Things are messy in Omaha.
There was a long-time café there named 11-Worth. The owner is a wingnut, and when the George Floyd protests started, he put up a Facebook post promoting his new Robert E. Lee breakfast, because Nebraska famously supported Lee or something.
This caused protests in front of his café, and he responded by closing it permanently, citing how he felt threatened.
At the time, Mayor Jean Stothert (R) lamented how protestors had driven a long-time business out of business. (Snowflake closed it on his own, nobody drove him out of business.)
That protest leader subsequently decided to run for city council.
Now he’s in jail, charged with first degree sexual assault of a minor. A person alleged he assaulted her in 2014 (which would have made her a minor then).
Omaha City Council’s general election is next year on May 11. He is currently being held in jail in lieu of $1,000,000 bail. A post on his Facebook page asserts this is for political reasons and the accusation is false.

LINCOLN — To hear President Donald Trump tell it, Big Ten football wasn’t coming back this fall without his involvement. What’s more, he wasn’t going to get involved until his challenger in the upcoming election, Joe Biden, ran an ad on Aug. 28 featuring empty Big Ten football stadiums with the tagline “Trump Put America On the Sidelines.”
Trump, speaking Thursday on a sports radio show called Outkick, said the ad was “a lie.”
“I saw the ad and that’s actually what got me into gear,” Trump said.
As Trump takes credit for return of Big Ten football, league officials point to other reasons (Omaha World-Herald, more at the link)
In other words, the OWH will use “lie” when Trump refers to Biden, but will not use “lie” when Trump lied about the Big Ten’s decision-making.

Tropical Storm Wilfred has formed in the eastern Atlantic.
If the tropical depression in the Bay of Campeche develops into a storm today, we’ve run out of names on the list and it becomes Greek letter Alpha.
What happens if you have a destructive hurricane with a Greek letter for a name? Do you retire the letter from the Greek alphabet? Are we obliged to tell Greece they may not use that letter anymore in their language?
Tropical Depression Twenty-two is expected to become a tropical storm later today.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden acknowledged the existence of white privilege in his own life Thursday, saying his privileged experiences as a white man have benefited him.
“Sure, I’ve benefited just because I don’t have to go through what my Black brothers and sisters have had to go through,” Biden told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in a televised town hall event.
.
.
.
The former vice president’s comments came after journalist Bob Woodward released a recording of an interview with President Trump, in which the former real estate mogul dismissed a question about white privilege, saying the veteran reporter had “drank the Kool-Aid.”
QAnon is a Nazi Cult, Rebranded
A secret cabal is taking over the world. They kidnap children, slaughter, and eat them to gain power from their blood. They control high positions in government, banks, international finance, the news media, and the church. They want to disarm the police. They promote homosexuality and pedophilia. They plan to mongrelize the white race so it will lose its essential power.
Does this conspiracy theory sound familiar? It is. The same narrative has been repackaged by QAnon.
I have studied and worked to prevent genocide for forty years. Genocide Watch and the Alliance Against Genocide, the first international anti-genocide coalition, see such hate-filled conspiracy theories as early warning signs of deadly genocidal violence.

Governmental Procedure Trivia Quiz!
A question came up at Quora which (unusually) brought up a point I hadn’t considered and don’t know the answer to.
(The actual question was “If elected, will Joe Biden fire Bill Barr”)*
But the point raised was this: while it’s regarded as “customary” that Cabinet Secretaries submit their resignations to an incoming President - especially with a change of Administrations - is it legally required?
Of course, Cabinet officials serve “at the pleasure of the President”, and can get the axe any time - but (disgracefully) it doesn’t seem too far-fetched a scenario that Barr (or any other of the Trump Gang) would just say “Fuck you, I’m not quitting, you’ll have to fire me!” and hang on at his desk at Justice right up until he gets served with the formal notice of his termination….
*Badly phrased: I’m sure a President Biden would want to not only *fire* Barr, but throw him in jail: but never mind….

That NYT thing above is referring to The Upshot
From bloomberg jonathan Bernstein has two caveats
“One is that the chart assumes any error would be in the same direction, which it may not be; I’d rather they demonstrated the size of the error, which could favor either candidate. The other thing is that the ‘polling error’ here includes the final three weeks of polls in each of those previous elections, but there’s good reason to believe that the race shifted in Donald Trump’s direction in the final days in 2016, so part of what’s being called an error here is really polls taken before voters changed their minds.”

High-reliability polls are very expensive and not available for free. We are basically blind to the reality of the moment. We still know what to do.
Given I’m a glass half empty type of person, I always believe polls that are negative and never believe polls that are positive. And anytime things seem to be going the right way, they are always overcome by bad news. I still recall my joy at Obama’s election in 2008 — but then Kennedy died and Scott Brown defeated Coakley, so Obama’s hands were tied in the Senate, after having only a few months of a veto proof majority in the Senate, followed by the 2010 GOP victory in the House.
We are living in a nightmare world and most of those I know IRL, whether pro or anti-Trump, express certainty that Trump will win re-election. Maybe it is just the experience of 2016 — but the fact that he is polling in the 40’s is reason to remain pessimistic — especially given all they are doing to undermine both confidence in the voting process and the voting process itself.
