they remind me of an old frieze carving of some of the last ceasars of the roman empire when it was split up amongst 4 different rulers who vowed to be allied. they were holding each other as a sign of compatriatism, but it looked like they were holding each other in fear of the future becuase they were at the end times of the roman empire.

Someone asked in a thread, two back, who God was talking to when he said "Let us make man in our image..."

I read the thread (an hour ago, granted), didn't see an answer. I thought, wow, a year or two ago the poster would have gotten 10 to 15 good, intelligent, thoughtful answers to that question. The only responses were snark, ribbing, sarcasm.

What happened? zombie said the other day that the quality of the comments had gone downhill at LGF. Is it the newer system, with the Ajax? This chatroom-speed forum, tending to make people post without putting a lot of thought into their posts, so that they can get their comments in while staying at the head of the wave? The Hebrew word for God used in that scripture is plural; it is commonly referred to as the plurality of majesty.

I just didn't feel like fighting about religion. I can't offer proof, religion being what it is, and I'm pretty secure in my faith, so it's just squabbling from that point on out.

God in Christian theology is a trinity or triune, some believe in . 3 in 1, Father, Son and Spirit. The "us" is the 3 in 1 God speaking plural, but with a singular image.

Some denominations hold that God is three persons, distinct from one another.

The royal plural is not just an Indo-European concoction.

And, as a Hebrew student put it to me, "'Elohim' is no more plural for ending in '-im' than is 'Zeus' for ending in '-s'."

(I can vouch for the former, but not the latter; I'm not well-studied in Semitic linguistics.)

Life has been interesting. Mr. Songbird has three job offers in hand in the DC area and drove off early this morning. His start date with one company is next Wednesday. I'll be here until May to finish out my teaching contract and pack out the house. This is the best for us financially as I will get paid through the summer while I'm looking for work and because my daughter is so entrenched in her winterguard program.

I'll miss Mr. Songbird like anything, but it won't be as bad as when he used to be a ships officer.

Well I wish you and mr. songbird jus the very best..

Peace and love in the world of nature....

Meerkats are the loveable stars of natural history films and a mere mention conjures up images of them sitting on their haunches and looking furtively around the African savannah.

But the image of caring creatures on endless sentry duty to protect their young and family is overturned today by Cambridge University scientists who have revealed how meerkat society is riven by jealousy, murder and cannibalism.

Bush's reading list.

His reading this year included a heavy dose of history -- including David Halberstam's "The Coldest Winter," Rick Atkinson's "Day of Battle," Hugh Thomas's "Spanish Civil War," Stephen W. Sears's "Gettysburg" and David King's "Vienna 1814." There's also plenty of biography -- including U.S. Grant's "Personal Memoirs"; Jon Meacham's "American Lion"; James M. McPherson's "Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief" and Jacobo Timerman's "Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number."

Each year, the president also read the Bible from cover to cover, along with a daily devotional.

Bush read more books last year than I did. And he held down a somewhat more demanding job. I guess he doesn't waste as much time on LGF...

I found his letter of recommendation from his CO to the state police, and what almost looks like a rejection letter from the police saying that they aren't really hiring but they'll accept applications, and warnings that they are very strict about height, weight, and the picture.

But please do not fall into the trap of believing what hams & Iran & their sycophants in the Western MSM will inevitably start crowing, that Hamas won. They have not. That's not a suspicious weapon system. That's white phosphorus. It is typically deployed as an air burst so the phosphorus gets a greater spread, producing a better smokescreen. The mosque might be 'shopped in, but that's how WP is usually set to go off for a screen.

Sure as hell this one must be a photoshop

I don't know if it's a photoshop or not. It appears to show a white phosphorus shell exploding in an airburst, which is a legitimate use of the stuff. It looks like a telephoto shot, so distances are foreshortened. It's hard to tell if it's directly over a mosque or not, not that it matters any.

Oh yeah.... I don't know where I got seagulls from. You know, I've heard some say that it's a good thing that the crash didn't happen at night, reasoning that it would be dangerously cold out on that wing waiting for rescue. But I got to thinking, the pilot wouldn't have been able to see the river at night. And there wouldn't be geese flying at night anyway!

It was skill on the part of the pilot (and probably the co-pilot).

But perhaps God guided the pilot after the geese misstep, kinda a "oh shit" moment. Now it would have been cooler if he would have zapped the plane down on the runway, but he might have felt that was too showy since he's laid off those kind of tricks for a few 1000 years. One trick like that and this agnostic would be in church Sunday.

Fake or not, it doesn't appear to show the IDF doing anything bad. Smoke shells and flares have been a part of warfare for a long time. There is a war going on.

If the photo purported to depict the IDF doing something evil and nefarious, I'd be more willing to accept the possibility of fakery. But that particular shell-burst looks pretty innocuous to me.

re: #196 Sarge1984

That's not a suspicious weapon system. That's white phosphorus. It is typically deployed as an air burst so the phosphorus gets a greater spread, producing a better smokescreen. The mosque might be 'shopped in, but that's how WP is usually set to go off for a screen.

Almost sure its fauxtography. First, the trails are night trails and not day trails. How can you tell the difference? Simple .. the night trails are dark at their base .. they arent white or light grey (an example derived from reflectivity. Second, for a set of trails, just remember that these are white phosporous (the same stuff used in flash powder circa turn of the century photos) What do you know about a flash cam? if you have a set of intense brightness you get reflectivity (which is the precise reason that the IDF uses it in the first place) It lights up stuff like nothing else. Underneath this lil scene there is nothing resembling reflectivity. Not on the mosque, not on the ground (its dark !) or on any of the buildings in the background.

Take a shot with a flash camera .. and have someone take a photo of you taking that shot. Note how bright everything else will be. Then go back to this photo and laugh.

This is how it is done:

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the Governor's Mansion in Springfield , Illinois: One from Chicago, another from Tennessee , & a third from Kentucky .

They all go with (Unnamed Politican) to examine the fence.

The Tennessee contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well", he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Kentucky contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, 'I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.'

The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to and whispers, '$2,700.' Incredulous, (Unnamed Politicvan) whispers back, 'You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?'

The Chicago contractor whispers back, '$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire that guy from Kentucky to fix the fence.'

'Done!' replies (Unnamed Politican).

And that my friends, is how it all works in Illinois politics ! ! !

re: #233 Buster Bunny

No, white phosphorus isn't used for illumination. That's a whole 'nuther shell, and it has a parachute.

I'm not arguing whether the photo is shopped or not. I'm saying that's a white phosphorus shell airburst. And, based on personal experience, that's how it would look at that time of day, too. The fragments don't provide a lot of illumination, at least nothing tactically meaningful. Once it hits the ground and continues to burn, it seems to provide a lot of illumination, mostly because of the reflection in the smoke. A lot like high beams in fog.

What I'm saying is that the photo isn't of flares to confuse anti-aircraft missiles, it's really WP.

It is surreal.

It kinda reminds me of the initial over-the-top adoration we sometimes profess for the Hero of the Day. Someone we'd not heard of the day before writes a great article or makes a really statement on TV, and suddenly there are posts, mostly tongue-in-cheek, saying, "So and So for President!"

We know we're not really serious. But the silly leftists heard a guy they barely know give a cool speech and elected the great unknown to the office of bloody President of the United States of America.

re: #259 ggt

Nasty stuff. It has its uses, though. Great smoke, great incendiary, great psychological weapon. Not as lethal as regular high explosive in an air burst, but mix high explosive air burst with WP on a fuel depot and you've got a real winner.

Some Gone With the Wind trivia:

The famous scene of the fleeing of Atlanta with the towering inferno was actually the studio burning the set of King Kong's giant wall. They used two stand ins to run across at a distance. You can also see the actress covering her face, not to protect herself, but to disguise the fact they hadn't yet cast the role of Scarlett so she was protecting the integrity of the film at that point too. Not a scene they could easily reproduce.

However, a translator I am not! But I can also do a mean Boston accent (my hometown) and a Brooklyn accent, as I went through nurses training there, lived there for a few years, and met NY Grampa there.

Anybody see Obama's "major speech" on economics today?

Based out of a two year old factory in Ohio that produces steel products, he toured then spoke to the crowd. I still do not find him eloquent or inspiring. I never really have. He sounds like a numbers guy. He covered many statistics, said fewer um's than usual, and seems not to have a feel for when to pause so the crowd can cheer and clap. Funny enough, after he was done, he turned around to shake hands with the crowd. There was one female cheesing it up and smiling, but I swear, all the other hands he shook, the people were dismissive, looking away and definitely not smiling.

It was humorous listening to him laud the two (count 'em, 2) jobs the factory hired "just last week". This guy is not eloquent, I don't know where that comes from.

Feeling a bit pissed off tonight, suffering from saleus interuptus.

I have a beautiful vintage accordion that I'm selling on EBay, made by one of the most sought-after accordion makers in the world. I've owned it for years and it's been stored it in a climate controlled environment all of this time.

Took it out yesterday to set up the EBay listing.... ran through all the buttons keys and switches, and it sounded beautiful.

I picked it up tonight to play a couple of tunes, though, and I'll be damned if two of the treble reeds aren't buzzing.

I have a mailbox full of inquiries tonight from interested buyers, but it looks like I'll have to pull down the auction, open it up and do a repair job on the reeds before I can sell it.

It sounds like you are in a good location. We need to do the family trip to Jamestowne/Williamsburg/Yorktown. I want to do it justice, so we'll need a week at least.

GWTW and The Wizard of Oz in the same year.

Amazing.

I am not far from Valley Forge, and it is colder than a witch's tit right now. Looking back, knowing literally just 45 minutes away that hallowed ground at one time soaked up the bloodied feet of men who marched for the freedom to think critically, and determine their own destiny, makes me ill looking at how we have squandered this privilege.

jus totally squandered it. And betrayed the memories of all who served subsequently everywhere in the World.

re: #331 avanti

Not sun spots, nor climate change just a Alberta Clipper bringing in cold weather to part of the country. Sun spots don't just pick of the US to effect.

Thats right. The whole planet feels it.

Space scientists are scratching their heads, trying to explain why the sun remains eerily quiet despite being at a time when sunspots should be becoming more frequent.

The sun passed the low point of its 11-year cycle of sunspot activity last year.

The first sunspot of the new cycle was spotted in January, but solar observers say our star has been almost free of such activity since then.

(View large close-up image of the Sun from Friday, June 13, showing the solar surface continues to be mainly free of sunspots.)

“It continues to be dead,” said Saku Tsuneta with Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory while attending a solar conference in Montana.

Scientists there said they don’t believe the lack of sunspots means that an event known as the Maunder Minimum is beginning.

That phenomenon produced a lack of sunspots for 50 years in the 17th century, resulting in what is referred to as the “Little Ice Age.”

Periods of inactivity are normal for the sun, but the current spot-free period has gone on much longer than usual.

This cycle is just simply “off to a slow start,” said NASA solar physicist David Hathaway.

But another solar scientist, Oleg Sorokhtin, of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, believes the solar drought is an indication that Earth will ender a period of cooling.

He makes that prediction based on past trends and early records. Sorokhtin points out that whatever influences human activity is having on the climate is a “drop in the bucket” compared to the rapid cooling that could occur due to an inactive solar period.

NYT's Inauguration Hypocrisy: Bush Chided in 2005, but Obama Free to Party

At a time when the United States is fighting two wars and faces a severe recession and huge budget deficits, the inauguration of Barack Obama as the nation's 44th president is estimated to cost $45 million. Bush's 2004 inauguration cost roughly $40 million. But though the figures are similar, there's been a major shift in the tone of coverage at the New York Times.

While the Times spent much of January 2005 making clear its disapproval of Bush extravagantly celebrating his inauguration during wartime, that concerned tone is conspicuously absent from the Times in January 2009, although the country is not only still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also in danger of a deep recession. The difference? Perhaps because this time, it's the Times's favored candidate who is readying to assume the highest office.

Might be why 2008 was the coolest in 8 years, but still in the top 10 warmest since 1880. 2009 might be cooler still, but no way to know yet.

We shall see.

There was a sunspot drought during the little ice age.

The Little Ice Age was a period from 1300 to 1850 A.D. when the Northern Hemisphere experienced colder than normal temperatures.

Some scientists say that a major volcanic eruption in 1258 A.D. and another in 1600 A.D. helped cool temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. The coldest period of the Little Ice Age is attributed to lower than normal solar energy.
From 1410 to the 1720s the cooling had a strong effect on some areas. During that time, access to Greenland was largely cut off by ice. At the same time, canals in Holland routinely froze solid, glaciers advanced in the Alps, and sea-ice increased so much that no open water was present in any direction around Iceland in 1695.

Unusually low solar activity, indicated by little or no sunspot activity, between 1645 and 1715 likely triggered the Little Ice Age in Europe and North America. During this event, known as the Maunder Minimum, astronomers observed only about 50 sunspots over a 30-year period as opposed to a more typical 40-50,000 spots. The sun normally shows signs of variability, such as its eleven-year sunspot cycle. Within that cycle, it goes from a minimum to a maximum period of activity represented by a peak in sunspots and flare activity.

During those periods of low solar activity, levels of the sun's ultraviolet radiation decrease which can significantly impact ozone formation in the Earth's stratosphere. A lag time of 10-30 years allowed for the climate system to be affected by an increased ozone layer that altered the heating of the oceans. Diminished jet stream winds caused by a dimmer sun created cold land temperatures by reducing the movement of warm Pacific air to America and warm Atlantic air to Europe. During this shift, winter temperatures cooled as much as 2 to 4 degrees F - enough to freeze rivers and alter agriculture, economy, disease, etc.

It may only be a coincidence . . .

The Dutch are Ice Skating on their canals this year.

So far, the death toll still stands at 1. I forbade my drivers to use that tunnel system in company cars when it first opened. (there are many ways around it) My guys thought I was nuts. Hubby is in the construction trade, roads and bridges, he told me never to use it, he knew what was going on. My guys think I am clairvoyant now. At least they don't bitch and whine about not being able to use it anymore. The Ted Williams tunnel going into Logan airport is fine, though.

How was the show tonight?

Small crowd, but the Denver Post drama critic showed up tonight. He was suppose to be there opening night (last Friday), but cancelled. Reviews do help (well, good ones) and there should be no reason for this show to get slammed.

Westword (the alternative paper, like the New York Observer) was there opening night and she gave us a really good review, which is unusual, because they usually see are stuff as too mainstream.

But tickets sales are picket up for the rest of the run. Jan/Feb are the slowest months in theatre in our area, for what ever reasons.

Compton school is named for Barack Obama, a first in California

First there were Obama T-shirts and bumper stickers. Now there's a Compton charter school named after the president-elect.

The former Qued Charter Elementary School changed its name to the Barack Obama Charter School earlier this week. The original name was always intended as a placeholder -- "Qued" is a mash-up of "quality" and "education" -- and parents at the school overwhelmingly wanted the school to be named after Obama.

No one anywhere, and in the dead of winter, and the hottest part of the summer are when these blackouts usually happen.

We are on the Atlantic coast, and have an emergency pack at the ready, in case. I am a diabetic, on insulin, and that really needs to be kept cold, in the frig. I have a pack to put it in, just in case.

I think that everyone should have an emergency pack, and a battery radio, cell phone charger (they make them..they use a battery), non-perishable foods, and any medication at the ready. Flashlights and lanterns, also.

And if there is a baby involved, or a toddler? A seperate one!

1 So far. It is a young system. When they built the bridge across the Charles river, they found that the concrete support structure had voids in it, because the concrete contractor sent many batches of old concrete, leftover stuff that should have been dumped. This was AFTER the bridge had been completed. (The contractor was arrested). The whole tunnel system ('cept the Ted Williams tunnel) leaks like a sieve, the water pours in in sheets. God only knows what is coming. All I know is it will not be pretty. There WILL be a cataclysmic failure at some point, without a shadow of a doubt. Not a question of if, just when.

Hi, I posted this answer in 503...

I was jamming with some folks in Concord, Mass. and I met a guitarist and bassist who were involved with the project somehow. I forget the names. I did buy the album. It was overprocessed and didn't have much soul, as I recall. I think the world could use a fusion revival.

Hi, I posted this answer in 503...

I go to the small theaters in my area, frequently! Its so cool to 'talk' to you, a stage actor!

koala was sitting in a gum tree...... smoking a joint.

When a little lizard walked past, looked up and said,
'Hey Koala! What are you doing?'

The koala said, 'Smoking a joint; come up and have some.'
So the little lizard climbed up and sat next to the koala ,
where they enjoyed the weed.
After a while the little lizard said that his mouth was dry
and that he was going to get a drink from the river.
The little lizard was so stoned that he leaned too far
over and fell into the river.

A crocodile saw this, swam over to the little lizard, and helped him to the side. Then he asked the little lizard, 'What's the matter with you?'
The little lizard explained to the crocodile that he was sitting smoking a joint with the koala in the tree, got too stoned, and then fell into the river while taking a drink.

The crocodile said that he had to check this out, walked into the rain forest, and found the tree where the koala was sitting finishing a joint. The crocodile looked up and said, 'Hey you!'

So the koala looked down at him and said,

'Shiiiiiiiiiiit, duuuuuude.....
How much water did you drink?!'

It was amazing. My first thought was wow. those are some badass pilots to pull that off.

I still shudder thinking of what might have been. And there was a baby and sibling on board...the pilot is an incredible man. He managed to avoid the GW Bridge, and at the beginning of rush hour, no less. If, G-d forbid, that had been, it would have been a disaster of massive proportions, just unthinkable. And the almost instant action of the First Responders was simply incredible, along with others who were on the ferries that went right to the spot. They hope to get the plane out of the river in the AM...both engines fell off, which they say was what they are supposed to do.

"We will kill Bin Laden, we will crush al-Qaeda," Barack Obama

Obama about to take office.

"My preference obviously would be to capture or kill him," he said. "But if we have so tightened the noose that he's in a cave somewhere and can't even communicate with his operatives then we will meet our goal of protecting America."

You heard wrong :

"Carol Browner, who was also EPA head under Bill Clinton, served on the Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which is run by the Socialist International.

"This doesn't exactly make Browner the next V.I. Lenin, however. In fact, the commission is about as mainstream as it gets. Its co-chairs are former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and Goran Persson, the former prime minister of Sweden. Other members include Hilary Benn, the UK's secretary of state for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, former Polish President Aleksandr Kwasniewski (who, as President Bush would likely remind us, provided troops for the invasion of Iraq) and Martin Torrijos, the president of Panama."

I like that he can keep it, no need to be in a bubble as long as it meets the record keeping requirements:

Would be ok for me to email and ask "You are doing something stupid. What are you doing? Why the fuck are you keeping that stupid that Blackberry? If any national security are sent to you on that idiotic device they can easily be intercepted by our enemies. Even worse any potential assassin can easily trace your every movement, and while I didn't vote for you I never want to see our pres. cut down by a bullet.

I agree the security issue would need to be addressed if it's a problem. Although I do get and send e-mails from his office as do some 20 million others, I don't think they'll add us all to his Blackberry.

A persons opinion of what is pragmatic and what is extreme is dependent on where they themselves stand.

Obama's Administration will be, in my opinion, the most extreme leftist administration this nation has ever seen.

That's surprising to me given some of the far left guys he could have picked, and the whining from the left about his picks. He even kept Gates and most of his staff. It is, I guess a matter of where you stand.

He could have picked people even further to the left. He could still do so. Nothing could stop him at this point. He might have trouble appointing Michael Moore to a high office but then again, its not like the Senate Republicans have either the numbers or even the nads to to seriously oppose anyone that The One would put before them.

Obama's first two years will have no meaningfull restraints. It will be a buckle up and hang on for dear life ride till the first mid-term elections in 2010, and maybe even beyond that till the next Presidential.

He kept Gates because he hasn't a fucking clue about the Military. This was his best pick, I'll give him that. But keeping Gates was a political move for him. Iraq is very quiet now, and if he picked some moonbat to replace him and chaos ensued, he couldn't blame Bush for it.
So I'll give That One&#8482 credit for that, knowing he only did it to keep a shit stain out of his undies.

I lived in Iran. My observation there: The lives of many people haven't changed a lot in centuries. Sure some of the trappings of modernity creep in, but substantially their lives are much the same as generation before. Who is in power makes little difference, they keep their heads down and survive. They say, vote and do things that make seeing another day, another year more likely. They don't have the safety net we in West have when we speak up and challenge things. Overlay the fatalism of Islam, my life is what Allah wills, who am to question Allah's will?

Gaza looks like that to. A lot of the people aren't good or bad, just trying to make a life for them and their family. Hamas is in power so Hamas get's supported, not out of any fervent belief. Just that not supporting Hamas is unhealthy.

Left alone to some extent, as long as they act like a civilized place. I really believe in consent of the governed. But in too many places that "consent" is manufactured, coerced, or just plain stolen. Helping these places arrive at ture consent of the governed is the way to go. Sometimes that help will be in the form of a SEAL team or a JDAM.

re: #663 freetoken

Emanuel may be a party hack... but by "Chu" I assume you mean the DoE nominee? I've always thought Chu was very pragmatic.

Sorry I missed your post earlier. For one thing, Chu is on the gorbal warming bandwagon. In a big way.

His choice for secretary of energy, the highly respected Nobel laureate Steven Chu, is no fan of fossil fuels. Chu's statements and policy positions suggest that he favors a shift away from one of the nation's — and Houston's — most important and strategic industries. If that is the case, it might be wise to consider how realistic such a shift would actually be.

In speeches, Chu has called fossil fuels the "culprit" in climate change. He says there is a "very pressing need" to find alternatives to gasoline and advocates converting solar energy into automobile fuel. According to the Wall Street Journal, he has called for "gradually ramping up gasoline taxes" (a position Obama has rejected because of the "additional burden" it would place on families). Once, famously, he termed coal "my worst nightmare."

Of course, Chu's positions underscore his larger goal of embracing renewable energy as a strategy for reducing global warming.
