Sitting here in Philadelphia hoping for 8-14 inches of snow. A lot of things have to go right to get snow here. Most of the time it changes to rain on us. But I try, unsuccessfully to hide my joy from my wife. I figure when I have seen enough snow, I'll join the crowd that groans at the forecast, but I guess I haven't seen enough yet.

This is the UN in action. The UN serves its purpose: allows a venue for any nation to come and say its thing.
It is not a process that is set up to accomplish radical goals, or even the mundane.
Diplomacy is about getting different parties to speak to each other, if nothing else.
I'll repeat what I wrote the other night: AGW adaptation and mitigation are economics problems, and it will probably be up to the G20 and the WTO to accomplish what is needed, if anybody is going to get something done.

By the time the radio stations start playing Christmas tunes, I'm ready for a little Christmas. I can never stand listening music on the radio the rest of the year. I've heard not enough songs too many times. I can go around the dial in 5 seconds and not only know every song, but which ones are about to end. Thank God for the Ipod. I got about 950 songs and it takes weeks to go through the shuffle before I hear the same song again. It's neat to go through the library and look at some of the songs you keep and which ones you don't keep. I woulnd up with 8 Carpenters songs, 12 Jethro Tull songs but only 4 Led Zeppelin songs. I have Jack Bruce solo than Cream. Virtually no Beatles songs, except for the most infamous song, the first real headbanger. Never gets any recognition, its name is so intwined with murder.

Fox News: Ben Nelson Opposes Health Reform Because He ‘Understands The True Meaning Of Christmas’
Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) is still refusing to support Senate health care reform legislation, with his main objection being that the bill doesn’t restrict women’s rights enough by severely limiting access to abortions. Today on Fox News, host Steve Doocy and analyst Peter Johnson, Jr. lauded Nelson for his “moral” stance. But they then went even further, arguing that Nelson is obstructing progress because he “understands the true meaning of Christmas” — unlike all the immoral people who want to make sure that Americans have access to quality, affordable health care as soon as possible.

It's good cheap eats. At least I've noticed this year. I like to slice them and either pan fry them in butter or oil. No major dunkage in either case. It's a carbo so the "energy value" gets eaten up rather fast. If I'm going to put any bangers in that mast I prefer Italian.

Potatoes are great, especially if you want to save some money on your food budget. This is a great potato leek soup that I love. Made it for Jimmah last week and he approved.
Changes: use all chicken broth, no water, if you can. I make my own stock-- buy a rotisserie chicken and when you're done eating it make stock from the carcass. You could also use boullion and water in place of the water, but it bumps the sodium content up high.
We're on a super-tight budget ourselves right now; potatoes are great. Killgore no doubt will have all kinds of better tips in re: cooking and food budget, but this is a nice simple recipe that doesn't require you to have anything other than a pot and a vegetable peeler (and knife).

Killgore can make a pork chop last 1000 days! Just kidding, about 4-5 days with lots of vegetable. I can cook but since I've had an electric stove I lost interest. Plus I'm set in my ways pushing a close 50. If I cook it involves a pan and either ground beef or an Italian sausage and wheat bread. Garlic and onions optional. Or I'll mix up a microwave burrito with a Budget Gourmet vegies and rice. Maybe add a tomato. Chips, granola bar or two and of course, ice cream.

OT: 4 Trains trapped in the chunnel! (I knew France was trash, but really, four at once?)
LONDON - Four trains carrying more than 2,000 people broke down beneath the tunnel that links England and France on Friday night, as snow was expected to cause further disruptions throughout Britain.
Eurostar spokesman Bram Smets told Sky News and the BBC early Saturday that all the passengers were safe, although some of the trains were reportedly without heating and lighting.
The difference between the cold air and the warm tunnel caused the trains to break down, Eurostar told BBC News.
Maybe if they got a thicker comforter the trains will want to come out?

I keep threatening Jimmah that we're buying a grill ASAP and will be doing a lot of cooking on it. I guess it isn't normal in Scotland, lol.

That mistake by Ed (and all the frothing anti-choice nuts) is completely deliberate, of course.
Did you catch this from last night's overnight? We were talking about the OK law about internet disclosure of abortion info-- here is the PDF I posted of the law.
Notice how the female patient is consistently referred to as the 'mother'. Nice touch, asshats!
Anyway, Ed knows perfectly well what he is doing when he elides that distinction between fetus and infant. A troglodyte like Ace or Dan Riehl is dumb enough not to know-- but he does. IMO that makes him worse.

You can do an awful lot of stuff on the grill if you can control the temperature halfway decently, you just need a good grill. Really down here it beats the heck out of heating up the place with the oven and running the A.C. more, plus it tastes better (well, almost always, sometimes I just like a pan-fried steak with onions and mushrooms over a grilled one).

Electric stoves are not reactive and slow to respond.
I've always thought that being young at heart was always more important than physical age. I sometimes see wingnuts that are my age and they almost seem like they're my father -- besides almost puking.

I have to say I have never cooked a steak. (I think once, long ago.) I never was a big fan of red meat (this goes back to the Irish family that boiled everything, basically). Plus my ex was vegetarian, so there was no need to learn. Jimmah, however, is a fan, so I've promised to get up to speed on it. Advice? (on the panfrying; no way will I be grilling anything in Scotland for a few months yet).

I'm starting to feel older here, I'm in a 55+ building as the token youngster, they are allowed two people owning units below 55 while still keeping their tax reduction. Still everyone here is at least ten years older than me and it can get...well...old. There are no "block parties" no community get togethers, hell half the people aren't even here for most of the year. Just getting a quorum together for the association meetings is a challenge, still they are quiet and un-bothersome neighbors.
I guess I should just shut up and enjoy my view of the gulf in the peace and quiet. I can always go down out when I want to escape feeling like I'm old before my time.

How do I put this. Morrissey is not very bright. In fact, he's a rather dim bulb. However, he's actually a little bit smarter that Dan Riehl and Uncle Jimbo. Which isn't saying much.
Now, these are the lower forms of intelligence on the right wing blogosphere. You do however get equally ignorant personalities like Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Pat Buchanan, Sarah Palin, etc. Think lower end of the intelligence curve.
Morrissey always tries to sell himself as a "pro-life" blogger. Doesn't matter if he even has a clue if human reproduction. After all, he's just trying to sell his 6th grade writing level to some of the commentators we've seen. Now that's a low bar to reach for. If you consider the Godhead Michelle Malkin of the wingnut blogosphere that put's things in perspective.
The bottom line is that we talking about rather dumb people.

There's something about wingnuts, even really young wingnuts, where they seem to be in training for being a grumpy extremely old man. (that holds for the women too.) If I had to pin down one defining characteristic of the wingnut it would be a reactionary sort of resentment: resentment of others, belief that things have been stolen from them, belief others have it easier, a sullen resistance to conditions being improved for anyone based on a logic like "no one helped me, why should it be easier for anyone else?" It's really strange. it's like they take the good stuff about conservatism (respect for tradition) and run it through some filter coated with lemon and vinegar and other agents of bitterness.
Totally agree that young at heart (and in mind, in terms of remaining openminded) is way more important than physical age.
TMI, probably, but when Jimmah and I first started talking, he said "i'm slightly worried I may be older than you" (he is, but not a lot by any means) --but my immediate reaction was that I could not care less. Totally. Daniel Goldhagen's book, Hitler's Willing Executioners, traces the origins of genocidal sentiment in Germany to 'eliminationist antisemitism'-- basically religious adherence to blood libel crap. (his book has come under criticism, some of it justified IMO, but it's a really great book).

Just briefly surveyed the right-o-sphere... looking at so called reports about what happened in Copenhagen... and seeing what at best could be labeled propaganda.
Notably absent from any of them is a comprehensive look at what really transpired. Pretty much the NY Post view dominates, which means that there are cherry-picked statements from the usual characters (Chavez, Mugabe), while ignoring the overwhelming bulk of what was discussed.
What is so striking is how much they love Monckton's report of what happened to him... and Monckton's criticism of what happened to him while he was outdoors during the large protest (he was knocked down.) The irony is Monckton's criticism of what happened to him, and blaming the UNFCCC conference itself, is quite in line with Chavez's same criticism of the same event!

Dianetics has a permanent place on the NYT bestseller list due to group buys by scientologists. Look in the special section for 'trade paperback nonfiction' where "What to Expect When You're Expecting" also holds a permanent spot-- not because of group buys but because it's a bestseller.
I haven't seen a Dianetics ad here myself, but many blog ads involve an almost random content-- the blog owner doesn't always get to see and approve the ad content for the specific ad. In any case, this would be exactly like any bookstore in the country selling Dianetics (hint, they all do).

The judge in the Oklahoma abortion case has kept a restraining order in place until a February hearing, and denied the state's request to dismiss the case. The law would require those receiving abortions to fill out an intrusive questionnaire and would publish the information obtained online in a clear attempt to intimidate those requesting abortions. It also introduces several onerous penalties for doctors who don't adhere to a Byzantine set of rules and regulations to induce a further chill on the provider side.
Probably as good an outcome as could be hoped for at this stage.

re: #143 Spare O'Lake
Why do you call it a "sad presser"?
Anyway, because of the way the conference is organized under the UN, the only way for a document to be accepted is by "consensus", which means every nation agrees. The Bolivarians objected to the accord agreed upon by President Obama and 27 other nations, so the Conference did not accept the accord.
However, in order to actually make the accord real, the president of the conference toke "note" of the accord, so it is entered into conference documents.
They've spent the last 5 or 6 hours arguing how to specifically word the accord so that those disagreeing (Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia) and those agreeing (most everyone else) with the accord will be happy on how the whole process goes down in the records.
As the accord, the Copenhagen Accord, is not a legally binding treaty, it will not have to be submitted to the Senate for approval (as a treaty.) However, to pay for a share of the adaptation and mitigation funds for the least developed nations and the island states obviously Congress will have to fund it.

So, I finally located and got my flu shots. Not from the government, though - the county health department still has a bizarre system involving pre-registering so you can stand in line for hours with thousands of other people at a school or stadium, and might or might not get a shot for your trouble. The private marketplace came through, instead. I went to my local pharmacy to pick up 'scrips, and they had a sign up advertising both seasonal and H1N1 vaccines. Ten minutes later I was vaccinated, and also got a Pneumovax shot as well, which I had never heard of but qualified for. It protects against the 28 most common types of pneumonia bacteria. I'll need a booster in 15 years, if I'm still alive then.
The pneumovax, unfortunately, has made the lymph node in my left armpit swell up like a painful apricot, but apparently this isn't uncommon and will subside in a couple days.
Meanwhile, it is unbelievable how badly the government is botching distribution of flu vaccines. Maybe it's always like this - I've never bothered with flu shots before, but figured I'd thumb my nose at the anti-vax idiots this year. It's been a total clusterfuck for at least the last two months, and it took the private sector to finally come through.
But let's dismantle all that, and make sure everyone gets exactly the same, shitty care - or complete lack of care - everywhere.

Once they've had a day or two to digest the tragic failure of Copenhagen, I expect the Dem Administration to move on greener domestic energy by immediately proposing trillions in new spending on bold new research programs and fiscal initiatives in order to unleash the full power of the private sector and the scientific community -a program that will make the Manhattan Project and the Appollo Program pale in comparison.
And then Congress will then drop everything, cancel holdidays, roll up their sleeves, and pass the enabling and implementing legislation in a matter of days.
Full employment and prosperity will soon follow.

In the past, there has never been a shortage or delay in vaccine - it's always available at the local drug stores, a fact which I've noted and blithely ignored until this year. This year, seasonal flu vaccine was not available, because of shortages caused by the Feds diverting production facilities to the manufacture of H1N1 vaccine. Meanwhile, the Feds and everyone else created a panic over both types, ranging from local newspapers urging parents to keep their kids home from school to schools actually closing because of a single case of suspected flu, all the way to the President declaring a national H1N1 emergency - while there was still no vaccine to be had. The limited supply of H1N1, as already noted, was distributed in the most inefficient, counterproductive manner possible, packing thousands of people into small spaces for hours with no guarantee of sufficient supply.
Now that supply has begun to catch up with demand and the government has taken their hamfisted mitts off it, the situation has improved to the point where I can once again walk into my local drugstore - without a wait - and get vaccinated. The county's approach to this was akin to a Kafka novel. Compare and contrast.

How is it I got my flu shot at the pharmacy in September?

There has been a sign on our docs office door for months stating that same thing. They still don't have the regular flu shot available all this time later. My wife gets one every year, she managed to get one early in Indy at a drug store, but I've never had one.

I dunno. Did you have to drive 20 miles and stand in line with thousands of people for hours with no guarantee that you would receive a shot? If not, congratulations - your local distribution policies were sensible and actually worked.
Here, not so much.
Astonishingly, I just checked the county health department site, and - despite the apparent sufficient supply - they STILL are not encouraging people to visit their local pharmacies, STILL are not distributing the vaccine through their fairly extensive network of walk-in clinics, and are STILL organizing grossly inefficient mass innoculations with no guarantee of availability.
Which I guess is one thing about government you can always count on - once they decide to do something a certain way, that's the end of discussion, an no amount of fact or criticism or outright failure to achieve their original goals will sway them from The Plan.
Process over result. Cart in front of the horse.

re: #169 RogueOne

That is, indeed, the plan being put forward by some. I forget who it was, but an economist of some note suggested that there will never be a rebirth or recovery in Detroit, and instead of dumping resources on the city with such a vision in mind, those resources should be diverted to making sure people in the city can get enough of an education to find jobs somewhere else - presumably somewhere jobs are actually available.
Honestly, my opinion was that it was a prescription offered merely for shock value. It'll never gain traction. Although we do seem to be on the cusp of really major changes in the city, many of them probably quite bad, at least over the short term. Massive teacher layoffs and school closings are almost a certainty, now that teacher's unions have refused to grant even minor concessions to a district that is beyond bankrupt. And there's been a fairly large shakeup in city government, thanks to Kwame's departure and a big turnover in City Council membership.
But decades of rampant, entrenched corruption are probably so deeply rooted that even a scorched earth approach wouldn't eliminate it at this point.
As one local politician infamously suggested a few years ago, it might be best to just build a fence at the city limits and start handing out blankets and tobacco.

Sad to say, but that's the most practical advice one can offer in the short-term. The city looks to be all but dead, as an economic entity, and it's a damned shame - in my own lifetime (and I'm not that old) Detroit was a shining example of everything "right" about the American way of life - a broad middle class of skilled workers contributing mightily to the wealth of the nation. Now look at it.
It's enough to make you weep, seeing the abandoned buildings and houses, realizing the absolute surrender that went on - and continues - there. All those houses, all those buildings, they were the concrete expression of hope and optimism, the solid embodiment of the hopes and aspirations of entire generations. Now, just so much rubble and debris.

Well, it's SAt. morning and Cato the Elder hasn't stirred yet. He will be heading out to continue his trip to Ca.
We did a three hour tour yesterday morning, visiting the Platte River, I showed him the massive burn areas around Deckers, One of the oldest still operating REAL general store in Colorado, and a special stop at the BuckSnort Bar in Sphinx Park in Elk Creek Canyon.
If you are even in the BuckSnort, you will see a dollar bill pinned to the ceiling (along with 100's of other dollar bills) signed, Cato the Elder 149BC.
Cato went to Miners Alley Playhouse last night, and got a very special reserved seat to a sold out performance of our "It's A Wonderful Life."
And for those who are interested, that's not an avatar on his user profile, that's really him.
And don't tell Cato, but we found a blow-up plastic Sarah Palin doll in his overnight bag. Nasty.

I remember that study. Sadly, people still joke about prison rape. When my sisters brother first got put in he told her he intentionally took a swing at a guard just so he could get put in lockdown where he'd be locked up in a cell 23 out of 24 hrs just so he'd feel safe. The reality is the only way to survive is to either be protected by a gang or get locked down.
Semi-luckily for him he's a 1/4 sioux (grandpa lives on a reservation in s. dakota). There's a big problem with drugs on those reservations so now he has a bunch of native americans he can hang with. In the fed system they even allow them sweat lodge privileges which at least gives him something to look forward to on a weekly basis.

I decided to make a drink in honor of the forecast. Brew some strong coffee (for me it was a small brewed made on my stovetop moka pot - espresso is even better.) Add it to a mug and to that add one shot of bourbon and one shot of kahlua or Bailey's. Froth some milk in a big coffee mug, add the coffee/booze mix and lightly stir. I call it the Thunder Snow! Enjoy.

No, Decker didn't burn, but a lot of the forest around that whole area was burned, stripped clean by the Harmon and Elk Creek fires which combine all at the same time. That was the fire started by the Park Department woman who wanted to be a hero and fight a big fire, well, she got a big fire all right.

I don't know what the solution could be. Rape in US prisons is systematic and aided and abetted by guards and other prisoners. Read the HRW report I linked-- the testimonies of the victims. It will give you nightmares. For months.

I remember a comedian once, thrown in jail. Was terrified. Prisoners in the holding cell said, "What are you in here for?" He said, "Man, I don't know. I've got AIDS and they don't know where to put me." They left him alone.

Bob Cringely and his family send out family portrait cards every year for Christmas, and the gimmick is the entire family is nude, but not really nude: all the naughty parts are hidden away behind carefully placed props or accessories. The Fedex Kinko's in Charleston, SC doesn't appreciate his family's sense of humor--the woman there even remembered him from last year, and not in a good way.

No, Decker didn't burn, but a lot of the forest around that whole area was burned, stripped clean by the Harmon and Elk Creek fires which combine all at the same time. That was the fire started by the Park Department woman who wanted to be a hero and fight a big fire, well, she got a big fire all right.
sad..I have fond memories of that area...it was a fun, quick place to get to from Denver for some RandR...forest fire is everybody's worst nightmare in the west

re: #177 SixDegrees
Good moring, Lizards!
I wanted to say something about Detroit. The city where I grew up. It was terrific with the layout of main arteries like spokes of a wheel leading to the (downtown) hub which was beautifully located adjacent to the Detroit River. Easy to get around. Factories of all sizes with small and medium shops everywhere. On a hot summer night when all was very still I could barely hear the din of the factories which were not close by at all. Public transportation was convenient and everywhere.
Entrenched corruption. Too bad.

The Catholics are kinda of brilliant, in a totally insane way, in creating the category of 'sins of omission' (rather than merely sins of comission--sins one has commited) in other words, one is guilty not only for what one does, but for what one fails to do-- if you didn't help the old lady across the street, you are guilty. Etc.
BTW, I was born long after vatican II-- but my parents and the parents of everyone I knew insisted on having pizza on fridays. It was a crazy way of adhering to the pre-vatican 2 "fish on fridays" laws.

[Link: reason.com...]
Chavez is sticking to the theory that the United States is more useful as an adversary, regardless of who inhabits the White House. This goes some way toward explaining why, in a little noticed outburst yesterday in Copenhagen, he warned that the Americans, in concert with the Dutch (!), were still planning on invading Venezuela.
Those Dutch are sneaky

I have always found that the people at Cook's Illustrated do the greatest job in demystifying the multitude of food processes. They offer a free online trial membership thingy, if that's worth your bother. From them, I learned a simple method. The thickness of the steak will affect timing, but try:
Heat a heavy skillet (preferably oven-ready) over med-high heat. Add up to a tbsp of oil, heat pan until the oil begins to smoke. Salt and pepper your steaks, preheat your oven to 300(F). Place the steak in the pan, leave it for 3-4 minutes depending on the thickness; flip the steak, leave for another 3 min. Place the pan in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, let the steaks rest for 5 minutes and carnivore yourselves into a happy stupor.
(Incidentally, these particulars are based on cuts approx 1.5 inches thick, and result in a fairly consistent medium rare.)
This method works for me. (Cook's has also recommended a method that actually reverses these tasks, and it works pretty well, too....
Hope this is helpful!

San Luis Obispo taxpayers are in line to pay $195,000 to a local business owner for alleged excessive force by police officers during a case of mistaken identity and police negligence.
Attorneys for both the city and Jeff Milne, owner of Babbo’s Pizzeria, have agreed to accept mediator Dave Peterson’s settlement suggestion.
......
In July 2007, Milne arrived home after hiking up Bishop’s Peak, took off his shirt, shoes and socks and was settling down to watch television when four police officers descended on his home at 366 Christina and banged on the front door. Milne readily admitted the officers to a living room decorated with pictures of him and his family, asking, “I live here. What’s going on?”According to court records, the officers ordered Milne to place his hands in the air and began frisking him. Upon discovering a knife in his pocket the officers pepper sprayed Milne and threw him face first to the ground.
And then it went downhill from there. After smacking him around awhile....
After the cops had conferred among themselves, Milne was booked into County Jail, charged with resisting arrest and obstructing an officer. He spent the night behind bars, dressed only in a pair of jeans.
The prosecutor actually had the balls to try to convict him. $195k isn't enough of a penalty for the city. The prosecutor should have to chip in personally.

I remember a guy in Detroit selling peanuts....he'd set his box down and had a cool sales chant he'd go thru...he'd juggle the bags then toss them way down the line, or up in the air, behind his back, two bags at a time to different people....the fans would just collect all the money moving down the row and hand it to him and off he'd go down the way and do it all over again

Memories of a Catholic Childhood is excellent, tho I'm sure even more interesting if you have a C. background. I just finished a terrific book, Lit, by the poet Mary Karr, third in her wonderful memoir trilogy. She goes from atheist to catholic convert and I found it interesting and kinda understandable in a way other authors conversions weren't. This conversion was ushered in by grueling trip to sobriety, not a coincidence, I assume.

McCarthy was brilliant; the book is about her childhood, mostly. but it's interesting for many reasons.
She;s someone whom I think you in particular would like. She was very strong, very smart, very Catholic, and although she rejected Catholicism (and all religions) eventually, she remained a staunch defender of Catholicism and Catholic education all her life. (Which is basically also my own position, in many ways.)
That specific book isn't about any of that; it's about her childhood and being Catholic and female.

Well, Porkapalooza was only partially successful. My normal ham pusher only had national commercial brands available, instead of the ones he normally imports from down south. Crap. Maybe I'll try the Yuppie-Mart, but I'll wind up paying double there.
I did score some awesome Polish bacon, though. After seeing all the comments on Detroit, above, I'll remark that I went over to Hamtramck, where a local grocery store has an enormous meat counter with at least a literal ton of meats authentically dried, cured and otherwise processed Polish style. Including this wonderful bacon, which they make themselves and is way the hell better than any other bacon I've had. Which is high praise.
All the labels are in Polish, with the occasional English translation underneath. The woman behind the counter waved another clerk in my direction when I started talking - in English. Enough smoky goodness to last a couple weeks, and a pound for a Christmas gift to someone at work.
I also hit one of the local Polish bakeries and put in an order for kolaczkis, bite-size pastries with a fruit filling and hyper-flaky pastry crust dusted with powdered sugar. The place was packed with way too many goodies, all made right there; picking up my order on Monday will be a sore trial, and it's doubtful I'll get out of there without loading up on way more than I should.
Despite it's many problems, Detroit still has an awful lot of good people in it with tremendous energy and optimism, and a lot of really excellent ethnic food that you just can't find anywhere else, even in the neighboring suburbs.
I guess I'm gonna have to go hustle hams on a street corner somewhere, though.

20 years ago when my wife and I were engaged we went on a weekend retreat that was compulsory for getting married in the Catholic church (at least compulsory in San Diego).
The priest who led the weekend was a 20 year Navy chaplain approaching retirement and was wise to the ways of the world. Before the last session on Sunday night he placed a coffee can near the restrooms and said anyone could place a question in it that he/she may be too embarrassed to ask.
An hour later there was one question in it which he read out:
"Since sexual intercourse among the married is a sacrament, should we pray before or after?"
I almost caught an eye roll from him, but he sighed, then smiled and said:

Now that was funny! Apparently some married folks wield sex as some sort of reward or else use it as blackmail to get their spouse to do things they want. I found that if you treat marriage as a big compromise, let the other person have an equal say and work through the issues as they come up, you don't need to do that. Been happily married for 6 years to the most wonderful woman in the world and I have never found myself wanting.

Lone Democratic holdout in Senate agrees to back healthcare bill
With a critical vote looming this weekend, Senate Democrats reached a long-sought deal with the lone Democratic holdout, Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, who will back the party's healthcare bill after settling weeks of negotiating over abortion.
That would give Democrats the 60 votes they need to quash a series of Republican-led filibusters and pass a bill by Christmas.
Nelson, who was pushing for tougher restrictions on federal funding for abortion, reached the agreement with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office Friday night after round-the-clock talks with Reid and Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), a leading supporter of abortion rights.

Snow is rare enough that they don't have the equipment to deal with it - no plows, no salt, no sand - and nobody down there knows how to drive in the stuff, making things ten times worse than they already are.

Well, when it comes to Middle Eastern fare, this area's hard to beat. Dearborn is right down the street.
One upside to Detroit's devastation: it isn't even a little profitable for the big national chain restaurants to do business here, and they've abandoned the city like so many others. That's left the market wide open for mom and pop restaurants making food that appeals to them and those in the neighborhood. This morning, I passed a Bosnian restaurant; I have no idea what that's like, but I'll probably have to go find out. Even though so many other things suck about Detroit, we've probably got as good a variety of really excellent, authentic ethnic food as places like Chicago or New York.

You've been watching too much MSNBC. In the real world, people love Jesus AND they like to do it. In all kinds of crazy ways. Without any intention of procreation at all.
And good morning to all...
There's a novel, called Heathens, which has as one major character, an evangelical Christian housewife, who teaches classes for young women at a local bible college. About halfway into the book, one chapter is devoted to her private diary, which, in between witnessing to faith and complaining about the state credentialling process, discreetly documents her sex life.
"Three time last night. Praise the Lord!"
"Only once, for for a very long time. I am truly blessed."
"It is that time of the month, so Ted and I have had to knock it off for a while. That is why they call it the Curse."
"Back in business last night, until dawn was coming through the drapes. Praised be his name."
She's a wonderful character, in an extremely weird book.

That is a pretty neat website. While I don't suffer from ABC sex as some christian men do, the website is a healthy dose of reality to those who do. I'll have to do some more research to make sure they aren't advocating some sort of submissive sexual control over the woman by the husband but from a cursory glance, the website looks pretty legit and a nice biblical application of sex in marriage.

More like the heavy storms are rare enough that the cities make the decision to not bury budget funds and maintenance for equipment that is not used often enough. Logical decision made against the risk of the disruption due to a fairly rare event.

Bullshit girl. I lived on the East Coast for 24 years. I lived in New York, I lived in Northern New Jersey for 11 years. Every winter, I didn't see black top for 4 months because of the snow pack on the road in front of my house.

Morning all! As the Senate moves forward on the hugely expensive proposed health care reform bill, the Chinese are issuing what may be either a threat or a warning. (Given the amount of U.S. debt China holds, I lean toward warning.):
In a discussion on the global role of the dollar, Zhu told an academic audience that it was inevitable that the dollar would continue to fall in value because Washington continued to issue more Treasuries to finance its deficit spending.
He then addressed where demand for that debt would come from.
"The United States cannot force foreign governments to increase their holdings of Treasuries," Zhu said, according to an audio recording of his remarks. "Double the holdings? It is definitely impossible."
Bottom line. Foreign governments are clearly not pleased with the massive increase in deficit spending, coupled with the shrinking availability of dollars on the world market as Americans focus on saving versus spending.
This is extremely troubling. We all knew that, sooner or later, people would begin to balk at buying our debt. It may be starting.

That day is stuck in my mind from how I spent my afternoon and evening. Five hours to get over the bridge on I-95 from Alexandria to the Maryland side. Crawling with the still moving traffic for a few more hours while a lot of people abandoned vehicles and walked off the interstate. Eventually reached a gap in the median barrier and switched over the southbound lanes in order to get off I-95 using an on-ramp. (By this time the police had I-95 closed to traffic.)
Got from there onto I-295, which by that time was plowed and salted. Thought the worst was over at that point, and then once I switched over to US-30 I hit the bumper-to-bumper jam there. By the time I got to the exit I needed the pickup-truck ran out of gas. And the off-ramp was blocked by a tractor trailer stuck half-away up the ramp.
So I pulled over and parked the truck on the shoulder and started walking the couple of miles to where I was staying. It was about 10pm by then. Local road was plowed, and I got a lift partway home by driver going by. An interesting introduction to the area.
Spent half the next day recovering the pickup. And I-95 was closed for at least two more days as they got all the semis cleared off the highway.

That winter they had the worst ice storm in like 25 years and it seemed about every road from Bowling Green to Augusta was closed for a minimum of 3 days. The morning the storm hit, I was in my car heading south to Lexington to my largest client, Valvoline Oil and after 30 mins there was enough black ice on the Interstate that I turned around and headed back. By the time I crossed the Ohio River, the Kentucky side of the highways were sheets of ice.

That was a type of story I heard from many folks that day. Me, that afternoon I had to drive (surface streets) about 8 miles roundtrip to pick the ex up from work. Took 90 minutes. Plus the half-hour it took to get thru the drifts in my parking lot.
I still shudder at the memory of that day....

What the fuck. Jews love Christmas! It's a shopping season! So we write some songs-- and personally, I think the Jewish Christmas music is the best: White Christmas, anyone?-- about how awesome the season is, trying to be respectful, and this is what we get?
I mean, you can't have it both ways. You can't ask everyone to say "Merry Christmas" and then tell them to buzz off if they're not in the club.

Jesus wouldn't mind mom-Christians enjoying Christmas. I'm not sure if Jesus would even have us celebrate it, but since we do, I really can't imagine why He'd want a holiday about Him to be used to spread divisiveness, anger, and hatred. Shame on these "Christians" who think others have no right to share in Good Will Towards Men.

Here's one answer for Keillor:
Why Do Unitarian Universalists Celebrate Christmas?
...What is true for me is that, in the peeling away of all the layers of history and pageantry and holy wars and Swiss Guards and all the rest, peeling away until we’re back to the message Jesus brought, and seeing Jesus there with those he loved, the hungry, the poor, those in prison, the weak, those who were persecuted, and we catch sight of something of the hope they must have felt. Jesus burst into this world like a flash of hope. That is why we sing this month. That is why we light candles.

Good memories like those are worth more then most anything.
Although I stop following them in the late 70's when I started banging in the NYC punk and noise rock scenes, I always found thier meld of influences from straight out rock to 2nd line N.O. rhythms astonishing. I was raised on Professor Longhair and the Nevilles and lots of folk and country and rock and soul, and Little Feat seemed to take all that, throw it in a pot and serve it up with extreme distinction.
30 years later we were playing in Black Mountain, NC and crashing at a locals house. I was the old guy in the band, the other guys young country rock dudes. Our host was playing DVD's of Jackson Brown and Gram Parsons and about 4 am, all of us wasted on moonshine and mushrooms, he throws on a DVD of Little Feat in. My bandmates, astonishingly, were not familiar with Feat, and the house stilled from the mayhem and they all sat slack jawed and mesmerized.

Here's a comment on the Lyric in Question:
A last note on “Silent Night” as it relates to Mr. Keillor’s column. I’ve had the opportunity to check in on the version that our congregation uses, as well as some other UU congregations. In the case of our congregation we’ve been using a version that places more of the original language back in compared to the UUA hymnal. We have a “savior” line, a couple of sleep in heavenly peace’s, but no Lords. Unitarian Universalist’s aren’t too keen on the Lords.

Since we're discussing Christmas carols, here's my nomination for the Best Christmas Album of All Time - A Tapestry of Carols by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band.
Prior has an outstanding voice, and the arrangements on here span the gamut to extremely traditional (to the point of being almost unrecognizable compared with their more modern versions) to enjoyably outlandish, like Angels from the Realms of Glory done to a stomping Cajun-inspired beat. I really can't recommend this album highly enough - buy it, do it now, it'll quickly become your favorite.
Maddy Prior was also part of the original Steeleye Span band, well known to those enamored of traditional British folk music, and probably completely unknown to anyone else, which is a damn shame. But I digress.
The version linked above is temporarily out of stock; order it anyway. You won't regret it.

No doubt. My bother was a bouncer/door guy for several years in the 80's at Tipitina's when it was on Tchoupitoulas. I had many an opportunity to see some Nevilles, Professor Longhair, the Radiators, etc. Those were rich musical times for me, drinking at the Napoleon House and playing on the street in the Quarter, slamming at Jimmy's, dancing at Tips and the Maple Leaf.
I did not know that Little Feat has not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That is a real injustice.

I've pretty much ignored Keillor ever since his marriage fell apart and he insisted that everyone in the world was obligated to wallow in his misery. That was about 25 years ago, I think.
I see I haven't missed much in the interim, except that he's become even more bitter and self-absorbed, a feat which would have struck me as impossible until glancing at his piece in Salon.
He reminds me a lot of George Carlin, someone else who used to be funny and then became epically not.
I will now return to my decades-long blissful ignorance.

Both used to be funny, a long time ago. Neither was funny years later. Both were consumed by bitterness that spilled into everything they did, said and wrote and corroded their work like battery acid.
As I said, I haven't paid any attention to Keillor in years. My quick glance at where he is today suggests that you may have a point: it's possible he's much, much less funny than Carlin was before his death.

I'm a music obsessive that has always paid attention to connections. When I read that Ian Anderson was going to be producing an album by Steeleye (for the uninitiated, that would be Now We Are Six), I got interested, and a buddy of mine loaned me A Parcel of Rogues. Been into electrified English folk ever since.
In my mind, Cockburn's skills are the equal of Carthy and Renbourn.
Merry Christmas to ya!

I know what you mean with Carlin, his later years tended much more towards political rants than humor, and the bitterness was definitely there.
That being said, he was and is my favorite comedian, and I remember the morning that I got up and heard on the radio that he died, and when I told the girl at the coffee shop we talked about some of our favorite Carlin bits.

Australian Jihadi, On welfare for 19 years, blew off three attempts at deportation, collected A$1 million and never worked a day.

My reaction, as well. I could probably recite alarmingly large chunks of his albums and television routines from the 70s, and still view a lot of that material as gold.
I feel the same way about A Prairie Home Companion - it used to be hilarious, then not so much, and by the time it wound down it was a couple years past the point where it had been enjoyable. I guess it returned to the air several years later, after Keillor's first marriage collapsed. I only listened to one show, and it seemed like an hour-long therapy session with Keillor free-associating about how miserable everyone was except him. His latest Salon piece only manages to last a few paragraphs before he starts whining and carping about Norway - where he and Wife #1 lived for a while. Frankly, I'm just not interested in hearing how a multimillionaire has trouble getting his dick wet.
