Glenn Beck Bingo! h/t Slacktivist
The rules are simple: Every time Beck violates any of his “values” by displaying its opposite, the first player to call him on it puts an “X” in the appropriate square.
When Beck is dishonest, misleading or mendacious, put an X in the square labeled “honesty.”
When Beck is irreverent, mocking or demeaning that which is sacred, put an X in the square for “reverence.”
When Beck savors and promotes despair, gleefully luxuriating in the ways in which he believes the world is going to Hell in a handbasket, put an X in the square for “hope.”
When Beck tries to sell viewers something they don’t need — something neither useful nor beautiful — put an X in the square for “thrift.”
When Beck swaggers, is prideful or vain, or makes claims beyond his capacity to know or understand, put an X in the square for “humility.”
When Beck is dismissive of those in need or offers reasons viewers shouldn’t bother to assist them, put an X in the square for “charity.”
When Beck is disingenuous, when his indignation is feigned or his outrage or tears are manufactured and rehearsed, put an X in the square for “sincerity.”
When Beck is excessive or extreme or employs unqualified superlatives inappropriately, put an X in the square for “moderation.”
When Beck is cowardly, backing down when confronted or lobbing pot-shots from the distance instead of face-to-face, or picking fights with those who don’t have the media or financial resources to compete, put an X in the square for “courage.”
When Beck refuses to accept personal responsibility or when he offers excuses for viewers so they don’t have to — when he blames Them for every woe facing Us, demonizing the Other and pointing the finger at the scapegoats whom he says are solely responsible for the ills of the world — put an X in the square for “personal responsibility.”
When Beck displays ingratitude, when he displays a sense of entitlement, insisting that his abundance and privilege are exclusively the result of merit, put an X in the square for “gratitude.”
I’ve left “hard work” for last because, to his credit, Glenn Beck is not a lazy man. He does, however, habitually belittle the hard work of others, attributing their misfortune to a presumed laziness and disrespecting the calloused hands and broken backs of the poor. Whenever he does that, put an X in the square for “hard work.”
The first player to get five X’s in a row, vertically, horizontally or diagonally, wins.

First I ever heard of him. It was an odd moment for sure but I’ve heard worse from people that were allegedly making sense — at least to some people. I don’t think there are medical requirements for holding office. Similar to something like getting a flight surgeon check.

Well, as the-end-of-the-pc-as-we-know-it draws nigh, the net is flush with info on the iPad.
The FCC were the first to publish pics of the internals of the device. Believe it or not, this is the entire logic board of the iPad.
Also, Apple appears to see a greater future for the ARM processor that is the brain to the iPhone and iPad:
Report: Apple purchases another processor design house
Almost two years after purchasing PowerPC designer P.A. Semi, Apple appears to have snapped up ARM design house Intrinsity. According to a report that first appeared on EDN (via electronista), a number of engineers at the company have indicated that they are now or soon will be employed by Apple. Some of them have even gone as far as to change their LinkedIn profiles, with one reverting it—possibly out of fear of drawing the wrath of his new, secretive employer.
Intrinsity is known for its expertise with ARM processors such as the one used in the iPad. The design house has always been fairly quiet about its client list, so it’s quite possible that Intrinsity contributed as much, if not more to the A4 ARM processor that powers the iPad than did P.A. Semi. Intrinsity has done work on customized Cortex A8 processors for the likes of Samsung, so the company’s expertise in the area would be extremely attractive to Apple.
If the sudden disappearance of Intrinsity’s web site is truly an indication that Apple has made another purchase, it’s a clear sign that Cupertino has really big plans for ARM and doesn’t see a future for x86 outside of its desktops and laptops. In addition to powering iPads and iPhones, it’s possible that we could see Apple-created ARM chips in other consumer devices—even HDTVs—if Apple wants to try and stake out more consumer electronics turf.

Read on Wiki that he said it was a “facetious metaphor.” I would hope that the DNC would ignore McKinney in any attempt to make a return so she’d have to run as a Green. Johnson actually voted no on TARP. Otherwise it looks like he votes yes on just about everything (with the post 2006 leadership) and also supported the impeach Bush or Cheney bills — which failed of course.

Normally I have a problem with checking white for race but this year I went ahead and checked it. I did “other” under Hispanic and Spanish and filled out Argentinian since that’s where I was born. Took me less than a minute to complete the form and seal the envelope.

I’m not so sure about the Hep C meds as an excuse for Johnson. My brother had the disease, and was on a regimen of strong meds for a full year. There were lots of severe side effects, but mental retardation was not one of them.

Yeah, it’s not something to flame the guy over. He self-identifies as black, and is also quite literally African-American. They should just STFU and pick something else to harp on him about. It’s bad form to get nitpicky about his race like that.

Same here. My census form was done and in the mail the same day I got it, and it took me less than two minutes to fill it out. I just checked that I was Mexican-American for my ethnic origin and chose white for the race. It’s really not that big a deal, IMO, so rather than kick up a fuss, I just filled it out and mailed it off.

It’s kind of funny when you think about the people getting all worked about the Census. Not so funny when you think about why they’re doing it now.
They’re getting all bent out of shape saying it’s going to take up their time and invades their privacy. So with regards to time then proceed to spend 1 hour a day for the next 60 days moaning about it like an obsessed lunatic only to have Census leave them a note. So from there they end up having to do a personal interview which takes about 20 minutes sometimes.
All told if you add up the hours the wingnuts have spent on complaining, putting off, and blogging about the Census it’s probably in the millions of hours. Of course if you take 2.9 million of Glenn Becks’s viewers then it’s probably close to 3 million hours. Bunch of weirdos.

The outrage over Obama’s census choice is equal parts ignorance and ODS.
People with one black parent have historically been DEFINED by the (white) society around them as “black.” Obama didn’t create this system, nor can he transcend it.
The implication that Obama is disrespecting his white ancestry is borderline racial purity paranoia, brought to you by the same folks who think he prays to Mecca and doesn’t have a birth certificate.

I also think it started out as the urban myth that ACORN would be conducting the surveys door to door. Another one is that the data collection agency is run by a secret battalion of the Communist central committee. Or something.
Kidding of course. But the ACORN myth was the big reason. It’s not true as we know since it’s a simple form. I wish taxes were this easy.

Oh. Randomly. They’re sending out “long forms” like that too. You know what they say, “you can’t fight the system.”
People have concerns about privacy but you know it whoever in upper echelons of power both private or public wanted even more information that’s available. That resides in credit reports, court records (both civil and criminal), deeds, records, licenses, etc.
It reminds me of the Patriot Act in a way. Like what are they going to do unless you have something to hide. Any decent FBI hack can check my debt card records and see how many packs of cigarettes I buy a day.

With all the Bachmann-esque hyperbole, I was expecting there might be something slightly onerous about the census form. I was half asleep when I filled it out, and it still only took ONE minute.
The baggers and Bachmann are so out of bounds here that even right wing tools like Rep. Patrick McHenry want them to STFU. Bachmann sees the potential for internment of US citizens if census data is gathered, based on internment camps for Japanese in WWII.

It reminds me of the Patriot Act in a way. Like what are they going to do unless you have something to hide. Any decent FBI hack can check my debt card records and see how many packs of cigarettes I buy a day.
There’s a site full of liberals here that would care to disagree with you that the Patriot Act is as innocuous as you say.
If memory serves, liberals and Democrats thought the Patriot Act was a data point in the trendline that Bush=Hitler. That bastion of Democratic Party thought, MoveOn.org, even made a campaign ad with the equation Bush=Hitler in it, in big scary chiseled font.
And yes, I know what the definition of “tu quoque” is, so you don’t need to remind me

I read she’s changed her story. It turns out Minnesota stands to lose a seat in congress if the census turnout is too low, and it’s most likely going to be hers.

Wait, it took her all this time to figure that out? That’s Census 101, and every member of the House knows the significance of districts and state population.
Maybe somebody in the gop finally got to her, but I won’t believe she’s struck a moderate tone until she recants some of her more scurrilous charges.

Tu quoque? No, I don’t think of it that way. You’re right. I know people would disagree with my general assessment of the Patriot Act. I would add that there are many on the right that were and are also opposed to the Patriot Act.
I wouldn’t say it was the “bastion” of the Democratic party. It was really only the more leftist elements. Democrats voted for the Patriot Act and has since survived, almost intact, Democratic majorities including the current president. A lot of people that voted for Obama thought he was going to crumple it up and toss it in the trash can but he hasn’t.

Opposition to the Patriot Act isn’t all about liberals. Libertarians despise it…remember the Paulites. IIRC Paul was one of the only gopers to vote nay on Patriot Act.
As for the comparisons of our presidents to Hitler, it sucked then and it sucks now. But the whole thing is more problematic now due to the implicit violence that accompanies tea party rhetoric.

Sure, MoveOn has absolutely no influence over the Democratic Party. It’s not like they convinced every single Democratic Party Presidential candidate in 2008 to protest Fox News’s hosting of two Democratic Party primary debates. Nor has their founder said that MoveOn.org “paid for the Democratic Party” and owns it.

OK, you want to focus on MoveOn. That’s fine. My point is that Nancy Pelosi voted yes on the Patriot Act in 2001. She voted against only certain reauthorization of certain provisions of the Patriot Act in 2005. Obama extended the Patriot Act with the help of Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate. It wasn’t the ride on Air Force One. It’s what was said to him while he was on it. I don’t know if it was promises or warnings but it got him in line. The fucking plane had nothing to do with it.
We’ll get single payer. Regulations to prevent murder by spreadsheet will kill the insurance industry because they can’t survive without declaring newborns have preexisting conditions. Single payer is miles away from socialized medicine like they have in the UK and is likely the only thing that will work once the insurance companies are put out of business. It’s just a shame that all the insurance executives can’t be put in jail for life for hundreds of thousands of cases of murder.
Sorry, I’m trolling.

You must have me mistaken for a) a spokesman for Move On and b) a spokesman for the DNC. Move On is one of many PACs that have an influence on the DNC. It’s a common mistake for people to identify Move On as being far-left. They’re actually more in line with progressives.

You’re vastly oversimplifying the whole affair, particularly the importance of a plane ride.
Kucinich is as close to a true believer as either party has. If he still thinks Obama is a “corporate whore” two years from now, he may very well run. He’s got a lot of Ralph Nader in him. And he was asked about it last week, and explicitly refused to rule it out.

Militia Nut Made Sexy Duck-Porn-Murder Video
Okay, fine. That Jabba the Hutaree militia guy made some weird home movie and it was on YouTube and now it’s not but TPM has some video excerpts so go look at it and be titillated if that’s your thing: “Kris Sickles appears entirely naked but for a mask of President George W. Bush that obscures some, but not all, of his genitalia. In the film, Sickles’s chubby, tattooed character finds himself attacked by an enormous creature which appears to be half man, half duck.”
The paper George W. Bush mask is taped to this fat militia guy’s dick we guess, and his nutsack is hanging underneath the George W. Bush mask. Who even knows, man. And the duckman is wearing a diaper, and there’s some sort of fake blood and fart noises, and the fat guy yells “dildo,” so wacky.
Links and vid at article. Most definitely NSFW.

The problem is that you can’t break out of your pre-expected forms of debate. This isn’t a place like KOS or the HuffPost where you can get away with that kind of argument. In general here people won’t play by those rules, but actually have nuanced positions. The painful part is that when the discussion DOESN’T match your expectations you try to force people into the mold anyways.

Not even that. It just came out of the blue. I actually made a statement supporting the Patriot Act and he went off about Move On and reminding me of the Bush-Hitler statements. Then he went as far as assuming I was going to call him out on tu quoque but I reversed that and said I agreed with him but he’s still banging the drum about Move On. We all know MoveOn ran the crappy Petraeus ad. So what? It doesn’t reflect the thinking of Obama or a significant number of congressional dems. Indeed, at the time, most Dems denounced the ad in no uncertain terms.
As for congressional gopers, it’s certainly no stretch to say that they are beholden to tea partiers and fat radio/TV talking heads. Indeed, they are so afraid of these groups that they are virtually incapable of criticizing them in any way.
Bottom line: Dems have marginalized their whack jobs; the GOP now embraces theirs. Big difference.

It’s all about the equivalency, false or not.
The faulty logic runs like this: If both sides have nutjobs, then both sides are the same and the right wing fanatics can be excused. Not very persuasive, but that doesn’t stop the meme’s use ad infinitum.

I’m still trying to figure out what Move On has to do with things. Frankly. If one were to use the most up to date model of conservatism as defined by Glenn Beck, Teabaggers, and Constitutionalists, then they would be against the Patriot Act and have a lot more in common with Move One. I don’t think they can figure it out so they get a little confused. They want to have their cake and eat it too but they can’t do neither.

A thought: If the SCOTUS finds part of a bill is unconstitutional (say the individual mandate), is the entire bill struck down, or just that portion?
If it was just the mandate that was struck down, that would work out nicely if Obama really did want to destroy the current insurance system (as some claim.) The insurance companies would then have to take on everyone regardless of pre-existing conditions, and be limited in the premiums they could charge, but there would be no way to make healthy people carry insurance to spread the cost. The insurance companies would be in for a world of hurt.

That would be the worst case scenario. If they get the mandate tossed the majority of the funding for the bill goes down the toilet.

Not sure if it was record breaking here though I think it was close.
I’m really noticing the effects of the lack of snow and rainfall though. Usually the back half of my property is under standing water at this time of year. The ground is wet but no water. It’s too bad, I really enjoy all the frogs and the pair of cranes that usually come for the spring, set up their nest in a copse of trees and spend the days feasting on them. Some farmers here are already talking drought. The worry is over the spring/early summer haying. They may have to take the hay earlier then usual to get it before it browns plus it effects the yield. It also affects the normal pasture rotation of the cattle. Not sure how exactly.

Well where I am it’s mostly beef cattle because it’s really rocky but drive half an hour south and you hit primo land. You see soybeans, other types of beans, corn, wheat, canola and dairy cattle. It changes every year. Lost of apple orchards around too.
It’s a great area to live in if you like getting a variety of fresh food right off the farm. I can even get fresh bison and elk if the desire hits.

In a related television note:
I watch only a few shows. One is “Fringe.” I Tivo’d the show the other night. They changed the opening music and some little things in the show. And what I hated was within 5 minutes I knew how the episode I was watching was gonna end. And I think I know what will happen at the end of the season. I was even saying lines before they were spoken. And verbatim. I hate this. One thing I really liked about the show was it kept me guessing. Not so much anymore.
This is a reason I quit going to movies. To freaking easy to figure out a plot. Hollywood has really shown me nothing in the last decade.

I did see them fly in scope everything out and leave. Haven’t seen them since.

Wish you could have seen the heydays of the 500 and the Indiana High School tourney. My family moved here just in time to see it all go away, doh! In the late 80’s the entire months of March and May were nuts around here. The night before the 500 was the biggest party on the planet. Almost a million people in a few square miles partying all night. It was really ugly and a lot of fun.

When I got my female from a rescue they included pet insurance for a year. Personally in that type of scenario the insurance is a good idea. A few years ago we took in a doberman we knew we were going to have to shell out a lot of money for vet bills up front, without insurance, so it wasn’t a deciding factor in getting my female but the rescue told us it had really helped in getting more dogs placed. We let it lapse, my dogs are healthy and pet insurance makes as much sense as paying for phone insurance.

I can see that. But the larger point in the show was that, by removing costs from the supply/demand equation, things wind up getting severely distorted. It’s a point they revisit in other segments, and there’s a lesson there for why medical costs rise so fast that is worth looking at. They also investigate some solutions that have been put into actual practice and have produced actual results.
On a somewhat related note, I suspect that one result of the HCR bill will be the consolidation of insurance companies, as mergers and acquisitions flourish and smaller companies are either eliminated or swallowed, making the larger even larger.

Summers are grand up here at 8200 feet. I’ve lived in Dallas (hot but dry, dry helps a bit), Houston (hot and wet, if there was never a New Orleans, Houston would be it) and the East Coast (warm and wet), and none of those places have a summer that is comfortable. But Colorado, at least from Denver to the western slopes, tends to be rather comfortable in the summer. Of course Denver, is a little warmer in the summer, but the nights are bearable, up here, the nights are almost always back down to the 40’s-50’s and even it it hits close to 90 on some days in Aug., the surrounding air itself still retains some of that cool of the night and of course it’s dry.
It’s really almost perfect weather up here at 8200 feet in the summer.

Nope. You body adjusts. Some people come up here, even in Denver (which is at 5000+ feet) and get a bout of altitude sickness for a few days (like a flu) but they get over that soon enough, and your breathing will adjust.
I have rarely seen anyone move up her that couldn’t adjust to the altitude except in cases where someone already have chronic respiratory problems or possibly massive weight problems where they just can’t deal with the altitude.
It’s normally not a problem. You hear about anecdotal situations from visitors, but that mainly because they only spent a week or two here, and they never got the chance to adjust, so they were miserable for the whole time.
That’s an anomaly.

I heard this story on NPR last night while I was busy bustling about the house so I didn’t hear everything the newsreader said but I caught her (him?) saying something about how this message was not meant for general consumption, that it was solely for the pope.
That makes it worse. The pope, of all people, should be smart enough, and well enough versed in history to understand that this is a false analogy.

The last paragraph:
He faces allegations that, as archbishop of Munich and later as the Vatican’s chief morals enforcer, he helped to protect predator priests.
I’ve posted a few links about this recently, about how an alcoholic pedophile was sent to rehab and how a therapist/priest raised hell about how he should never be allowed near children. Ratzinger ignored it.
Then he should be forced out as Pope, if that’s true. That would be evidence of a grave moral failing.

Ratzinger was a member of the Hitlerjugend during the bad old days. Oh sure, he was “unenthusiastic” about it.
But let’s consider the story of another former leader in the Hitlerjugend: a devout Christian girl who took a moral stand and never backed down from it, and paid for it with her life, along with her brother and others.
But of course, the Pope is the sanctified, infallible arbiter of all morality, straight from the chair of Peter.

Some interesting thoughts on the terror group who threatened governors….
Guardians of the free Republics looked to Gandhi, King, and Mandela
Actively recruiting across the country in the last few months and promoted on a Texas radio station, the Guardians of the free Republics believe the US government is a corporate imposter put in place by corrupt bankers as part of the New Deal in 1933.
Jews! This is standard Birch Society/Alex Jones/Glenn Beck type stuff.
The Anti-Defamation League says “sovereign citizen” groups wage war against authority using “paper terrorism,” but rarely resort to violence.
….
The Los Angeles Times writes that the “group’s philosophy mingles with the anti-Federal Reserve mantra espoused by followers of US Rep. Ron Paul of Texas as well as with anti-tax advocates.”But while a return to constitutional ideals is what much of the conservative tea party movement is about, experts say the Guardians are a different animal altogether. They can be primarily traced to the anti-IRS Posse Comitatus movement of the 1980s, and their modern iteration is, if not non-partisan, anti-partisan.

I’m so happy this morning. I dug up some almost free lapidary equipment to replace the large set up I had 5 years ago, the set up I had to sell to make it through these dry times I have been having. But I just rustled up some stuff for just about nothing, and I just started to work a piece of turquoise into a nice teardrop pendant which I am going to make a brooch out of for my girlfriend.
If you have never worked a piece of stone, you have no idea how comfortable it can be to work with your hands, grinding away, shaping, polishing and turning a rough piece of stone into a wonderful piece of art.
I’m starting back up with turquoise before I start with my favorite stone, opal. I need to get my “touch” back before I start cutting an expensive stone like gem quality opal. I have a parcel of opal that I’ve hung on to for years since I sold my machines, and I have been anticipating the day when I could get back to them and unearth those wonderful colors for all to see.
I guess I’m kind of waxing poetic about cutting rocks, but there really is an art to cutting stones.

Here is the set up I got, very much used and at almost no cost to me, someone was basically trying to give it away.
It is a combination machine that will cut (rock saw), grind and polish (flat lap) and a shaper.
I use to have a large professional set up, you know, with the bank of grinding wheels and a big rock saw and rock drills, all commercial grade.
This set up is more hobby grade, but you can still do a professional job, it just takes a little longer to swap out different parts of the tools, it’s not “assembly” line like the professional stuff I had.

I think it’s the “or be removed” part that has raised some eyebrows. Eyebrows, buttocks, and other anatomical regions have been stimulated by the ample evidence that the people in question are nuts:
“Calamity is coming for this world,” Kennedy has said on his show, adding that it would be peaceful. “We forgive all who repent for their crimes against mankind. You could also expect that many of those people will not repent, and if they are recidivists we will deal with them accordingly.
“peaceful calamity” wherein those who don’t “repent” for their “crimes against humanity” will be “dealt with accordingly.”
Yeah, that’s not crazy or anything.

What’s the specific threat of “else”?
From the article….
The appearance of Mr. Boustred in the mix may give some clue to the assertion by the Guardians that they had an agreement with “the military” to support their quiet coup.
This is where groups like the OthKeepers come in. The Guardians believed that groups like the Oathkeepers would use the military to oust the elected officials. As we’ve seen these guys have been arested with weapons caches including grenade launchers. It takes just one well armed lunatic to think he’s participating in a military coup to make a big mess.

Yep… like I said, I had to get rid of my professional machines a number of years ago, needed the money. But I held on to my rough material, opal, turquoise, slabs etc. I have enough material to start cutting again. I was just waiting for an opportunity to get some tools. Like I say, what I got is more hobby grade, hobby priced, but it will do a professional job if you know what you are doing. I know what I am doing.
This machine also turns into a rock saw, 6 1/2 blade, good for smaller slabs and smaller stones. Will also be useful for cutting my bulk meteorites into pieces that I can resell on Ebay.
I was smart, when I needed to start selling my stuff, I sold everything but the raw material. The same opal rough I was purchasing from direct from miners in Au. 10 years ago has now gone up more than 4-5 times in price. I have opal I spent pennies for, because it was a new thing for the miners to sell direct to customers through the internet, instead of going through opal brokers. But, as time goes on, they have a better idea what the market will bear, and they have adjusted their prices upward.

Nothing personal… gag… opal is my favorite stone, gem, period. And cutting it is like a treasure hunt. Very few pieces of raw opal just scream out “color.” You have to examine the piece, see where the color bands are, decide how much you are going to grind away to get near the bands, but not too far. And as you are grinding, you see that the color band stops, or curves away, or doesn’t have as much color as appeared at the edge and so on.
And sometimes, you have a piece of opal potch that has no color, but you cut it along one side, and inside is a wonderful band of color.
It has all the thrill (and disappointment) of treasure hunting, held in the palm of your hand.

It just annoys me at times that it seems like people’s memories of the bad-craziness of the last decade have faded. Personally I’m of the belief that the political continuum isn’t a 1-D line but a 2-D circle, and as you go too far to one side or the other, you start sounding like the opposite side.
As I pointed out last night, MoveOn running Bush=Hitler ads and leftwing protests with Bush=Hitler signs sounds like hell of a lot like stuff that we point out here all the time. It’s that wraparound crazy.
But it was pretty funny when I boredtech said that I sounded all like “nom nom nom fap fap fap”. I have to admit that was a pretty funny insult.

First lady Nancy Reagan came looking for him one afternoon, and Mr. Allen wondered whether he or a member of his staff had done something wrong. She assured him that he had not but also told him that his services would not be needed at the upcoming state dinner for German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Mr. Allen tensed, wondering why.
“She said, ‘You and Helene are coming to the state dinner as guests of President Reagan and myself,’ ” he recounted in the Post interview. Mr. Allen thought he was the first butler to receive an invitation to a state dinner. He and Helene — she was a beautiful dresser — looked resplendent that night. The butlers on duty seemed to pay special attention to the couple as they poured champagne for guests — champagne that Mr. Allen himself had stacked in the kitchen.
He also was invited & went to the Obama inauguration.

Opals look like magic.
One question. What color is the “fire opal?” Is is white or off white with multiple speckles of different colors or a translucent amber/orange color with no play of multi colors?
I ask because there is a terrible misuse of terms among the public in regards to opals. There is only one opal that is designated “fire opal” and that is an opal from Mexico which is a translucent amber/orange color, with no other color in it (except on rare occasions, a hue of green).
Opals that have multi colors in it, the term for those colors is “fire” but not the actual name of the stone itself.
You have white opals, black opals, matrix opals, boulder opals… all with “fire” in them, meaning “color.”
And the “fire” comes in different flavors. “Pin fire” is colors that appear to be little specks, hundreds of them, in an opal. “Broad flash” is like the color has been painted on inside the opal with a brush, large splotches of color… “harlequin” is small multi-color splotches that would remind you of the multi-color patches in a harlequin clown suit.
But “fire opals” do not have any color, and is only found in Mexico.

I happen to think we have nothing to fear from the Oathkeepers. Police, ex military and firemen. ooh scary! Given the atmosphere, we seem to need new boogiemen to fear. May as well worry about the Whigs. The Whigs are also largely ex military and Police. And if you asked them over coffee which of the infamous ten orders, they would refuse them too as any sensible person would.
Frankly, I am far more worried about gangland & cartel violence, which takes lives everyday, often attacking police directly.
I could be wrong, but IMHO there will be no revolution. There may be incidents, but we seem hyper sensitized to the politically based threats, and at the same time just skip over daily headlines of real gunfights and deaths in our cities. Huh?

I know. My daughter and niece were pretty little at the time and happy just to have new jewelery. We have since gave my niece a beautiful pair of fire opal earrings. I have a lovely little Edwardian pinky ring with fire opals and seed pearls.
Opals look like magic.
I suspect from you description, and the fact that they are earrings, you have Coober Pedy white opals with pin fire. Most white based gem quality opal comes from Coober Pedy in Au.

There have been, and always will be crazies. But right now it sure seems like the out-of-power party and its various and sundry media shills more or less pander to and encourage the craziness. Rather than taking the high ground and showing themselves to be measured, rational, deliberate thinkers, they’re ranting about tyranny and death panels. Being measured, rational, and deliberate now gets you ostracized from the GOP. The result is the non-crazy people become demoralized and the lunatics take over.

Maybe they are black opals? The main color is a blue flash to green.
If they have a black matrix (base color) with any color, then yes, that’s black opal, but like I say, not “fire opal.” The color IN IT is fire. And black opals come in about 6-10 shades (depending on the charts used) and start at a light grey matrix with color to a jet black matrix with color.
Black opals are graded one three scales. The level of black, the amount of colors (more multiple colors, and lot of red are the best) and astatic appeal.
Blue and green in the middle of the scale when it comes to color. You can have black opal with only one color, two colors or multi colors.

More opal info…
You also have to be careful that you are not buying a double or triple.. a double is a thin layer of opal backed with some material, such as grey/black opal potch.
Then a triple is a thin layer of opal backed by a potch and topped by a clear dome of something like quartz or even a resin.
This is a method to make gem quality opal go further, using thin slices of it and building it up with material.
There is nothing wrong with this if it is described as a double or triple and priced accordingly.
But remember, it’s not pure opal.

The media don’t like stories about drug cartels, they never have. First, such stories are dangerous. A reporter who finds out something the cartels were trying to hide is liable to be killed. Cartels make militia types seem sedate and restrained by comparison. Second, because cartels are international, fighting them is a long process often fought in places reporters don’t want to travel to. Third and last, the drug demand in the US makes simple solutions to the problems posed by drug cartels impossible.

Eh, there is a big difference between electioneering/election theft (which are as old as the republic - see the results of the election of 1876) and a real coup. Even if you do think Diebold threw the results in Ohio, that still doesn’t rise to the level of a coup.

ANY such crime needs to be taken seriously, dealt with swiftly and finally. The victims should not be told they ought to run away if they do not wish to be victims. That was my only addition.

Are we in agreement that gangland violence is far more damaging in real incidents, woundings and deaths that domestic terror violence?
Of course my point we are putting too much worry into possible threats (Oathkeeprs) and not enough into real existing violence like gangs and (rightly said) domestic family violence is helped along here.
491 | Randall Gross Sat, Apr 3, 2010 9:34:11am |
More people die falling down stairs than by gangland violence, more people die driving cars than by gangland violence, more people die from drinking than due to gangland violence more people die due to spousal abuse than due to gangland violence.
Now right wing militias are still nutballs, are still dangerous to particular regions, and are not something we should tolerate when they start making actual plans like the Hutaree were.

Here in eastern WA I am more concerned with the gang bangers thab the militia! I see gang bangers everyday, and see the results of their “work”. AFAIK there isn’t any militia nutbars here, and if there is they are being very fucking quiet about it, as in not a peep. 4 people were shot to death in Yakima last week. For a major urban area, I guess that would be an acceptable homicide rate. Not over here, cities average less that 60,000 residents. Homicides are a huge deal.

Yeah. That plan crashed about the time they ran out of funds for turning Berlin into the New Rome.
Augustine, the first emperor of Rome, could justly say that he found Rome built of brick and left it made of marble.
Hitler found Berlin nicely clad in marble and reduced it to rubble.

But your contention is false, there are stories about the gangland violence every day in lots of papers. The Militia movement is on the rise, and is therefor more newsworthy. Gangs have been around since hallelujah and their violence and memberships are trending down now… they are not big news anymore, and their danger to the average Joe is exaggerated if anything, see my note above about Troost st in KC, and how gangbangers are dangerous mostly to other gangbangers…

I’ve advocated here before that everyone ought to kill something and eat it at least once in their lives, and that it ought to be something other than a fish - something with feathers or fur. As you say, it builds character knowing where your food came from, and that it died feeding you.

It’s hard to find a slaughterhouse that will let you inside these days. When Michael Pollan was writing The Omnivore’s Dilemma, every single facility he contacted to arrange a tour turned him down, citing “homeland security” issues as the reason.
He had to rely on stories relayed by retired workers at such places. Which were about what you would expect.
