Video: James Dean and Ronald Reagan, Circa 1954

Arts • Views: 4,099

The Atlantic has an exclusive report on some very cool recently unearthed footage from a TV episode featuring Ronald Reagan and James Dean acting together, unseen since 1954: Ronald Reagan and James Dean: Rare Video From 1954.

In the clip, Dean is a hopped up (and really dumb) teenage delinquent who breaks into the home of a doctor (Reagan) and forces him to treat an injured friend. The scene in which Reagan operates on the friend’s bullet wound is a classic, as Dean cranks up some wild jazz on the radio and starts jiving around like a crazed, armed beatnik.

Ronald Reagan hates black people, apparently:

I have been called a Reagan idolater here. This may not help. I really respect that man and his Presidency. Not saying it was perfect, or uncontroversial. Too bad his fans deny the warts and the critics deny the successes.

Equating crack and Aids with Reagan as if he made them happen, is just a damn lie. Argue his policies in those early days of AIDS all you want but if you believe crack was a US government invention to hurt black communities you just might be a truther and birther too.

Although the Boondocks is often hilarious, it's also chock full of ridiculous paranoid bullshit like that. Luckily I'm getting better at tuning out nonsense or at least viewing it as a self parody (as in "OMG McGruder actually believes this shit LOL"). Tea Partiers and Far Left Moonbats never cease to be a source of comedy to me when viewed in this manner.

In defense of the show, from interviews, MacGruder doesn't hold to Huey's viewpoints, which are reflected in the show.

The clip is a lot less offensive with the context, but just having the whole episode doesn't give enough >>

30 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Tue, Apr 20, 2010 3:20:04pm

That Beatnick music man... It makes them kids evil...

The American right has always sought the "evil influence" that suddenly turned kids rebellious. You know like comics, and jazz, and beatniks and then rock and video games.

This is fascinating in a super tragic look how messed up 1954 was.

How about this? Demanding oppressive and unrealistic conformity creates youthful rebels. Uninvolved parents who are not properly involved in the lives of their kids or dedicated to their own marriages fucks up children even more.

But that of course would actually be taking personal responsibility for one's own actions. That is very un-American. Better to blame comic books and music.

Why the hang up on the weapons program. I'm pretty sure we were ok with Iran and Sadam's Iraq clubbing each other to a stand off at the time.

The whole weapons to Iran thing was simply a political gotcha. Ollie caught it, Reagan walked. Heh.

we just don't like the double standard here of worshipping Reagan and completely overlooking the fact that he full-on 100% aided Iran, and going nuckingfutz over Obama because he hasn't bombed Iran into the center of the earth and salted the crater so that nothing can ever grow there again.

gets sorta lame, this selective memory about Reagan... I'm with Bush Sr. on Reagan. his economic policy was horseshit.

There were two 1978 Camp David agreements: A Framework for Peace in the Middle East and A Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel, the second leading towards the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty signed in March 1979. The agreements and the peace treaty were both accompanied by "side-letters" of understanding between Egypt and the U.S. and Israel and the U.S.

Honestly, I think the Republicans should fear immigration debate more than the Democrats...with the Teabaggers going full klan-bake over Health Care Reform and Financial Reform already, chances are their already minimal ability to moderate their rhetoric will be incapable of stopping them from making any Republican rally look like a scene from Mississippi Burning. I don't revile any but the most egregious of politicians (murder, theft, etc), nor do I elevate a single one of them to some great height of statesmanship. In fact, I think all politicians are pretty much bums. You do realize thats been the synopsis for every episode of Lost seen to date?

Yes I know... sort of a clip and paste review. It's been a wonderful journey though.

I have to work an 8 hour overnight tonight, subbing for the overnight cashier who is taking a vacation day. Watch LOST and then spend the whole night trying NOT to get into an argument with the overnight grocery manager.

I met him last night for the first time (did overnight last night too). Part of the overnight cashier duty is to help the night crew stock when you can. This overnight GM is in his 60's, ex-marine drill sergeant, and he really pushes my "bully button."

You know the type, everything coming out of his mouth sounds like a slam, pushy, full of bluster. He use to work a union store (our store is not union) and he has that sort of attitude. Heaven help you if you offer to do something that he didn't tell you to do.

Thanks goodness I'm only filling in a few night. There would be no way I would put up with this guy on a regular basis.

The Arizona House on Monday voted for a provision that would require President Barack Obama to show his birth certificate if he hopes to be on the state’s ballot when he runs for reelection. The House voted 31-22 to add the provision to a separate bill. The measure still faces a formal vote.

It would require U.S. presidential candidates who want to appear on the ballot in Arizona to submit documents proving they meet the constitutional requirements to be president.

Hah! Klan-bake! And I agree with the last sentence. The R's have tied their wagon to the loons. Just *mentioning* immigration reform will cause an explosion of crazy amongst the TBs that will force the Independents to the Dems just to keep the stink off them. The rise of the TBs and the R's tacit acceptance of them has got to be the stupidest piece of political suicide I've seen since the Chicago Convention of '68.

America is polarized right now.

Yep. My only solace is that there are enough sane Republicans like me who will sink our ship rather than let this sort of thing get any real control. They may be able to elect the occasional Bachmann, but OTOH, Charlie Crist only needs to switch to independent and Rubio is gone.

Cripes, he got called out. He did the mea culpa thing. Life went on. This was a big defeat for the left hungering for his scalp. Why deny that? This was a long time ago. Move on fer cryin out loud. I don't revile any but the most egregious of politicians (murder, theft, etc), nor do I elevate a single one of them to some great height of statesmanship. In fact, I think all politicians are pretty much bums. Lincoln, Washington, TR, FDR, JFK and on and on were just folks and all should be at the end of the day seen for what they were - ambitious folks with power who hopefully staved off the worst the world has to bring against my country and did not embarrass me to much as a citizen.

That is all.

I'm not hungering for his scalp, I just want Iran Contra to be part of the context, ESPECIALLY now in this dervish of crazy talking points about how Obama is weak on iran. History is history, you don't suppress it. I wouldn't want Clinton's failures to be supressed either. I intensely dislike the creepy lionization of Reagan as some Christ figure to GOP politicians. They like him because he's a winner, and then do things Reagan would never approve of.

People really need to get real that when they are talking about making this a Christian nation or else, they are not fucking around. Sure they can't tell you exactly why Obama is a commie, but they know in their little hearts through a combination of Fox and the Holy Ghost that it's true, and well that's all the evidence they need.

Racism + Jesus + fear of the outside world + sense of lost position. It makes a very dangerous mix when cloaked in nationalism.

I've been attacked at concerts, but they scan for weapons there. :D

I've lived without services for a week, we've had some wicked northwest snowstorms that knocked out power and made driving impossible. We dont have the infrastructure here to handle heavy snow. Not a major disaster, but it shut the whole city down, cut power for a week, etc.

I've been mugged, check. Not at weaponpoint, just by being outnumbered.

Never had a gun pulled on me, though! My partner had a gun pointed at him by some roadragey driver when he was a teenager, but he zoomed off.

Thanks.

I've been in a hurricane, a forest fire, had a gun pulled on me, had a gun fired at me, had dynamite thrown at me, been pushed off a two story roof, trapped on a mountain overnight, and I used to be a bouncer and was attacked with a variety of things there.

Never been mugged, but I had a few guys try to pull cons on me in the middle of the night (why I thought wandering around 2nd and Pike at 2am was a good idea I'll never know, I'm lucky I wasn't mugged).

I have a honest question, for all. How many of you have had a real gun pulled on you? By someone who for all intensive purposes, would have used it?

How many of you have been mugged... in real bar fights where knives and/or guns have been pulled?

How many of you have been part of a major disaster, a tornado that tore half of your neighborhood apart, or a hurricane or earthquake, some situation where you actually had to live without services for a week or two.

Just wondering.

All 3, you forgot one, #4. seen a man killed? kind of a weird question tho, planning your weekend?

Been mugged in the Village, 4 on 1.

Walked into a mob shootout (possibly faked) on Park Ave.

Went through whatever the Turks call a hurricane in a GP Medium tent. Two out of 200 were left standing, picked MREs out of the mud for a week.

re: #209 windupbird

bwahahaha fair enough. actually, it's less that nerds don't date, it's that geeks don't date. Nerds have academic bonafides. Nerds work in the sciences. Geeks work the IT help desk, collect Star Wars figures and wear silly costumes :D

Well nerds do that too, but we have the sense to put the Star Wars stuff down when girls are involved. Unless we jackpot and get a real nerd girl.

OK funny story, the GF was convinced that she is NOT a nerd damn it.

I arched an eyebrow at this stunning revelation. Bemused I started to convince her that it really was ok to be a nerd girl. She just has to face the truth.

I AM NOT A NERD she announced.

OH really? So do you think Luke knew through the Force he was macking his sister and did it anyway?

"WHAT?!? Of course he didn't she fumed!" She then explained how he didn't have his Jedi awareness yet since he hadn't been to Dagobah and that he obviously didn't know who she was until he spoke to blue shiny Ben and figured it out.

"Aha" I said. "And who was Arca Jeth?" I asked...

"Only the greatest Jedi Watchman ever!" Everyone knows that!

Nodded, "Hal Jordan or Kyle Raynor?"

"HAL! Of course!" she boomed!

"So you sure you are not a nerd?"

"Just because I like comics and Star Wars does not mean I am a nerd!"

"Really and why is that?" I asked...

"Because nerds need to get obsessive compulsive about arcane things. I don't do that!"

"Really?"

"Yes, Really!!!"

"Didn't you write a thesis on how Tacitus gave Livia a bum rapp?" I asked.

"DO NOT GET ME STARTED ON TACITUS!"

"My darling, it's ok to be a nerd really... The nerd is strong in you, I sense much pedanticism."

So yeah that is our running joke.

I'm her best friend, because I'm about the only one that forgives her crazy moments, nor do I dwell on them. I figure it's like a checking account, as long as I get more joy in than she takes out on occasion, she won't bounce the friendship check.

I got bit by a shark when I was 15. My fault, really. I didn't think the sucker had teeth...or more precisely, I didn't see the teeth as they were folded back into its gums, and when I went to take the hook out, the little fucker clamped down on my finger. I was aboard a Fijian cargo ship (a trip arranged by my host-parents as I was an exchange student). Fortunately, one of the crew members was fast with a large club and managed to stun the little (3ft Mako) fucker with one whack, and I got my hand back mostly in tact.

Next was the trip to the galley, where the Indian cook opened a pot covered with huge cockroaches, brushed them aside, and scooped a handful of salt to throw on my hand (causing quite a scream on my part) before cleaning me up and bandaging me. I got an extra bowl of Kava that night (along with an extra couple of beers) to help put me to sleep.

No... it's not a weird question. I grew up with "nasty" all around me, in both social and domestic areas. I grew up not "frightened" by anything, things that happened were just part of life, nothing special, nothing new.

Reading this blog, and one other local forum in my area, I see differing degrees of what "frightens" people, what rattle people, what makes them uncomfortable, and when I ask this question, it comports with the amount of real danger a person has or hasn't had to go through.

It's not rocket science or anything, more anecdotal probably than anything, but I personally am not bothered by people carrying guns, not bothered by the rhetoric heard from a lot of people, there are very few places or people that rattle me...

I was much younger then and managed to fight the guy off and escape with only some knots on my head (from punches) and a few scrapes & stitches from the knife. I was stalked by a crazy man for over a year - that's when I decided to get a gun.

Lived near the epicenter of two major earthquakes in 1971 and 1994. Don't know what that has to do with the gun question.

Why are you wondering, I wonder?

Carter's work with Habitat for Humanity, his diplomatic missions abroad, etc. have been unequaled by any other ex-president. What has George HW Bush done (aside from joining Clinton after the 2004 Tsunami)? And what has the idiot son of said asshole done (aside from joining Clinton after the Haiti earthquake)?

Remember this classic?

I'm perfectly willing to give Clinton the same credit for the Tsunami and Haiti work he's done with the Bushes.

re: #288 Alouette

You mean steerage? Only instead of 9 hours (economy class), it's 9 days.

Back in the day, ordinary people could afford the equivalent of economy seats on a cramped airplane, only they got berths, three squares a day, dancing, the use of the promenade deck, and all kinds of other amenities. And the crossing from Cherbourg to New York didn't take any nine days.

My first trip to Europe was in 1978. I didn't want to buy a round-trip flight, because I wasn't sure when I was coming back. (Junior year abroad, anything can happen - and almost everything did!)

So I booked on one of the last non-hyper-luxury trans-Atlantic ships. The "Mikhail Lermontov" out of Leningrad. New York to Bremerhaven, $350. Full service. Plus wild undergraduate sex with grrrls from George Washington University on the boat deck. And doobies right under the nose of the Captain.

High times, indeed.

I was driving through the Phoenix area once, and the traffic was bad on the freeway, even though it was an hour of the day in which it ought not be.

When I finally got to the head of the pack I discovered why. Two cars were dueling it out, so to speak, with an old geyser in front (driving some big old auto) waving a long barrel gun (while driving) at a guy aggressively tailgating him!

It was as hilarious as frightening.

No... it's not a weird question.

I really don't have a "plan" in asking a question like that, just doing a little armchair analyst of life.

Sorry I asked you why you were wondering before I read this.

My conclusion may be a bit different. If you have been shot at and had a gun put between your eyes, you may become a little bit bothered by things when feeling threatened.
Rhetoric, oddly enough, means squat to me. People carrying guns do not bother me either as long as they are handling them properly. Bad weather though makes me nervous! A tornado warning is full on panic.

I'm substituting for the regular overnight person yesterday and today. DId it the first time last night, didn't like it too much. The night crew people act like they shouldn't be on the streets after dark.

I've been robbed at knife point—arm around my neck form behind, knife to my throat. Highly unpleasant. Everything was strangely crystal clear and in slow-mo, like HDTV.

I was much younger then and managed to fight the guy off and escape with only some knots on my head (from punches) and a few scrapes & stitches from the knife. It was one of those folding knives, about 5" long. Luckily for me it was old, fairly dull and rusty, so it snapped in the middle at the hinge. The business end of it broke off in my grip and I got one good slice back at him on his shoulder. And a couple of good kicks (I was wearing boots).

Lesson learned. Do not mess with lurkers.

If that's what you were interested in, I have a much better F/F story. A few years ago I was happily, nakedly, sleeping in my 2AM bed. I awoke hearing some crashes and bangs in the entrance hall, jumped out of bed and ran whooping down the hallway, turning on lights as I went. When I rounded the corner I learned that my wife was expecting the 25 yr-old daughter's visit, but didn't pass the memo. Wife and dau wanted to know how I planned to win a naked, empty-handed attack. I told them I had the advantage of surprise.

Just wondering.

The first time I was burgled at home, I was taking a nap. Broad daylight outside. He came in through the bathroom window (to echo a Beatles song) on the third floor. I confronted him in an afternoon-nappy daze. Backed him back into the bathroom, where he grabbed (I kid you not) a can of "Scrubbing Bubbles" and threatened to spray me with it. I grabbed it back out of his hand and backed him all the way back to the window, out of which he limberly climbed and disappeared the way he came. Down the wall, like fuckin' Spider Man.

The cops got a full set of prints off the cleanser can, and I identified him from a photo lineup, but nothing ever came of it.

After that I bought a gun.

The next time, new house, living on second floor. Guy comes up the fire escape at three in the morning and starts messing around at my bedroom window, four feet from my bed. I didn't have a dog at the time, but I'm a light sleeper. Woke up, put the laser dot on his chest, and asked him to look at it. He said, "I'm from the house next door." Right. So he took the hint when I said I knew everybody next door and he wasn't one of them, skittered back down the fire escape, scampered up and over the eight-foot chain-link fence to the next yard (ungated at the the time, which is how he got in) and disappeared down the alley, yelling "I know where you live, motherfucker!"

Burglars, in my experience, are not an impressive lot.

Power out in East TX for 5 days after ice storm.
Oh, and two times had a gun put in my face.

Life is full of surprises.

Guns and knives pulled on me at various times and in various places.

Scariest thing was a murder threat by the some good ol' boys (collective I.Q. 68) my first night in a Southern county jail.

re: #334 The Shadow Do

I was alright with the tornado sirens going off until I had kids. I try to be as pro active as possible. When the sirens go off now, I have them sit in the basement with their rain boots and bike helmets on.
Just creating stories for them to share at a later date.

re: #285 darthstar

That reminds me of the old Canadian Club adventure story advertisements that you used to see in magazines like Esquire back in the day: "And then we all adjourned to the veranda for a round of drinks and cigars. All in all, it had been quite a day."

re: #182 Aceofwhat?

Yep. My only solace is that there are enough sane Republicans like me who will sink our ship rather than let this sort of thing get any real control. They may be able to elect the occasional Bachmann, but OTOH, Charlie Crist only needs to switch to independent and Rubio is gone.

Are you in Florida?

What makes you sound so confident of that?

Rubio's support is the support of the faithful, not of the principles. There has been damning evidence in local papers of his high flying expense life style, but it makes little difference to the mindset of "No".

Don't know if you'll beback to read this, but I'll reply anyway.

re: #358 Decatur Deb

That's another factor for the flight/fight question--you probably had "preset" your reaction. That, and visualization drills, remove the fatal hesitance.

I don't know anything about preset reactions or visualization drills, all I remember is paralyzing shock, fear and panic for the first couple of seconds. Then something else kicked in & took over.

That's when time seemed to slow to a crawl. The fog of fear & panic evaporated, and my mind began very calmly & efficiently assessing the options. During all this thinking, my brain somehow retrieved an old memory of my dad having told me that when he was in the Marine Corps they taught them to always try to take an injury to a part of the body where there are no vital organs.

So keeping useful bit of info in mind, I got to the "fight" option and took it at my first opportunity (i.e. I grabbed the knife by the blade and started fighting like a hellcat). I never felt any of the punches the guy rained on me, nor did I feel any of the cuts. Adrenaline is a wonderful thing. So are dads who give useful advice, so all you guys pass that on to your daughters. ;)

Anyway, it was pretty bizarre because I know the whole episode couldn't have taken more than 60-90 seconds, yet it seemed much longer.

This didn't happen in the best part of town. Once I got away from the guy, I headed for the nearest house, which had a fence around it. As I approached the gate, I saw a big German Shepard come charging up. I looked at him... he stopped... we stared at each other for a couple of seconds... and then he backed up and let me pass without a peep.

Soooo, to wrap up the story: I knocked on the door of the house, and much to my relief the guy who answered looked sort of like Mr. T, but without the mohawk & chains. He was completely calm and gently pried the knife blade out of the death grip that I (unknowingly) still had it in, all the while talking me down from the adrenaline rush I was still high on. Then he called the police and helped clean me up. And guess what? He was a Vietnam vet. Marine Corps no less.
