Bloomberg on Anti-Mosque Movement: ‘Unfair and Un-American’

Politics • Views: 4,446

Big LGF kudos to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He sounds like a real leader in this speech to New York’s annual Ramadan dinner at Gracie Mansion: Bloomberg Launches Another Impassioned Defense Of Cordoba House.

If we say that a mosque and community center should not be built near the perimeter of the World Trade Center site, we would compromise our commitment to fighting terror with freedom.

We would undercut the values and principles that so many heroes died protecting. We would feed the false impressions that some Americans have about Muslims. We would send a signal around the world that Muslim Americans may be equal in the eyes of the law, but separate in the eyes of their countrymen. And we would hand a valuable propaganda tool to terrorist recruiters, who spread the fallacy that America is at war with Islam.

Islam did not attack the World Trade Center — Al-Qaeda did. To implicate all of Islam for the actions of a few who twisted a great religion is unfair and un-American. Today we are not at war with Islam — we are at war with Al-Qaeda and other extremists who hate freedom.

well re-writing the law to ignore term limits is kinda un-American too, just speaking as a New Yorker…

Well said Mr. Major, until the part about “un-American.” It’s very American to dissent. This dissent may be wrongly motivated, may be bigoted and racist, but it is not un-American.

Big mistake in terminology their Bloomberg.

Freedom of Religion is the reason America exists as a nation state today. To not call people out who seek to deny what was afforded the founders of the nation is perverse.

Big mistake in terminology Bloomberg.

Dissent itself is never un-American. But when the ideas contained in that dissent are un-American, I see no problem with calling it un-American. If someone expressed the opinion that we should go back to the days when Dred Scott was still “good” law, his expressing opinion is certainly not un-American. His horrible ideas certainly are.

When you seek to tear down the very principle of the founding of the country - thats a pretty damn good start.

People crossed the atlantic ocean on the Mayflower to escape religious intolerance and practice their religion free of persecution, the very way the Sufi have suffered at the hands of radicals in the countries their faith originates from.

You’re assuming that the GOP base would allow any candidate like that to get out of the primaries. At this point, the insane are running the asylum in the Republican party. A business positive, middle of the road guy wouldn’t stand a chance in that environment.

The hard right want all red meat, hellfire and brimstone anti-Obama all the time. Anyone who tries to play to the middle or be conciliatory would be blasted as a RINO, especially Bloomberg, who was a lifelong Democrat, became a Republican, then left the GOP. They don’t have any reason to trust him, much less vote for him.

The sad thing is, they’re going to pick up seats this November and it’s going to embolden them.

The day after the election in November will shock the Tea Party and the Republican establishment. The democrats will at the very most only lose a few seats in the house and maybe one or two in the senate. Mark my words, it won’t be the bloodbath that people think it will be.

NYS Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver (D) has come out against the mosque/community center. This is his district and Silver has stuck his finger in the wind and decided accordingly.

Silver, who represents the area, said there’s no question the community center project is protected by the Constitution, but said “the sponsors should take into very serious consideration the kind of turmoil” felt by families of 9/11 victims.

“They should find a suitable place that won’t cause the same controversy,” Silver said during a press conference with Gov. Paterson.

“The sponsors ought to consider the circumstances and ought to say, let’s see if we can find someplace suitable.”

Silver’s comments came a short time before Paterson was set to meet Archbishop Timothy Dolan to discuss the uproar over Park51, the planned 13-story development two blocks north of Ground Zero.

Way to stake out a principled position.

Don’t underestimate the 20% in the center. Right-wingers didn’t elect a Republican Senator in Massachusetts. Neither Bush nor Obama will be on the ticket in November. Centrists push the pendulum to the left and to the right. It may not be a bloodbath, but it’s going to leave a helluva mark.

re: #173 lawhawk

Well, he’s certainly not going to get the D or R nomination. That leaves only a 3d party run - and he’d be the richest to run since Perot.

It doesn’t mean he has a chance of winning (he doesn’t). It just goes to how he might possibly run (and I put those chances as slim).

Well then, I hope he becomes the darling of the right wing before he tries to split one side or the other. Whichever side he’s viewed as being on, that’s the side that loses. See: Ralph Nader, Ross Perot, John Anderson, et al.

The scary thing about Bloomberg is that as much as I hate him I could see myself voting for him against some other seated president that shall remain un-named… the sad part is that I so despise the thought of living in Cuba, I might find myself a resident of the Starbucks’s Nation…

I think that Seattle area and S.F. are just ping-ponging weather back and forth between them.
This past weekend was 50’s/low 60’s with rain.
Today was 85, and for the next several days.
Then back to rain and low 60’s this weekend.

And, I’m opposed to term limits. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t like seeing the same people get re-elected every year. I thought term limits were OK until I re-read Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man recently, and one point he goes on and on about is that earlier electorates should never be able to place restrictions on later electorates. Considering that he was responding to the argument that Britain rejected democracy “for all generations to come,” that seems like a pretty important principle. And I don’t logically see how term limits are consistent with it.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a multi-billionnaire media mogul who is beholden to no party or person and his repeated purchases of the NYC mayoralty by spending record-setting hundreds of millions of dollars clearly proves the validity and worth of his views.
Add to that the fact that he has gone from Dem to GOP to Independent, and it becomes obvious that Bloomberg cannot be touched by partisan considerations.
So for anyone to be called un-American by a man of Bloomberg’s fabulous wealth, power and stature must be both devastating and chastening.
It will therefore be interesting to observe the inevitable and speedy unification of American public opinion behind the Cordoba Mosque Initiative and its globetrotting visionary Imam Rauf.

While Mayor Bloomberg doubles down on tolerance, Sister Sarah does so on her support of Dr. Laura. Bringing Shirley Sherrod into it as well.

From Sr.’s tweet:

“Liberals defended Shirley Sharrod, lecturing about importance of hearing statements “in context” For everyone except Dr Laura of course.”

Her purpose is hate and incitement. That’s all I see. Oh, and she misspelled Shirley’s name.

re: #230 Spare O’Lake

He says “beholden to no party or person” and “cannot be touched by partisan considerations” like they are bad things … Of course, when you’re talking about defending the GROUND-ZERO MEGA VICTORY CONQUEST MOSQUE, maybe they are./

318 Ericus58  Tue, Aug 24, 2010 7:50:46pm

G.W. was handed a shit-storm in his first year - 9/11.
He gave quite possibly the speech of any president when at the site of the twin towers he put his arms around the NYFD guy and made his remarks.

The bloodsport was in all of our eyes. We wanted justice and Vengeance.

But he ALWAYS made the distinction that this was a war against the Taliban and A.Q. - Never was this a war against Muslims or the faith of Islam.

It’s worth remembering - to those of the Tea Party or whatever your group.

Actually, I don’t have any personal feelings about the guy either way.

I did like the way he handled the Gulf War, what with getting full U.N. approval beforehand, limiting our presence there so as not to inflame the region, and setting clear goals for a prompt and effective exit strategy. But that’s only in comparison to the later Iraq invasion; prior to 2001, all that stuff was considered normal and necessary for any war.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The massive U.S. stimulus package put millions of people to work and boosted national output by hundreds of billions of dollars in the second quarter, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday.

CBO’s latest estimate indicates that the stimulus effort, which remains a political hot potato ahead of the November congressional elections, may have prevented the sluggish U.S. economy from contracting between April and June.

CBO said President Barack Obama’s stimulus boosted real GDP in the quarter by between 1.7 percent and 4.5 percent, adding at least $200 billion in economic activity.

Illegal Emigrants

The flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration. The possible revival of Republican control in the house and senate is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O’Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists, and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. “I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,” said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted, and hungry. “He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I didn’t have any, he left. Didn’t even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?”

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. “Not real effective,” he said. “The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn’t give milk.”

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station wagons, drive them across the border, and leave them to fend for themselves. “A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions,” an Ontario border patrolman said. “I found one carload without a drop of Evian. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.”

When liberals are caught, they’re sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the a future Republican administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to drink domestic beer and watch NASCAR. Because of this liberals have turned to sometimes ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers. “If they can’t identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show we get suspicious about their age,” an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating a shortage of organic broccoli and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. “I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can’t support them,” an Ottawa resident said. “How many art-history majors does one country need?”

In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and Canada, future presidential hopeful Sarah Palin met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged that if the Republicans took power in November, they would take steps to reassure liberals that they are welcome in this country. A source close to Palin said “We’re going to have some Peter, Paul & Mary concerts. And we might put some endangered species on postage stamps. We will be determined to reach out.”

I’m curious how that meme plays out recently, in terms of Van Jones, the ACORN pimp and hooker tapes, Sherrod, Rauf, etc.

How should people call it out legitimately when it actually, undeniably occurs and not raise these alarm bells?

Oh, people should call it out.
But I always want to see the whole thing (or hear it) before I decide.
Way to often, though - it’s not really out of context. The person saying that just wishes it was.

re: #309 HappyWarrior

Well I think that went without saying. Seriously, is she goddamn high? First the defense was “Well rappers and comedians use the word so it was okay for Dr. Laura to do it.” and now it’s “She was taken out of context!”

1. I can assure you, every rapper who uses the word, also releases a radio remix that does *not* contain it. It may be on the club mix, but it most assuredly is not on the radio version. And if it does appear on the album, that album has a big “Parental Advisory Offensive Language” sticker, and it’s not sold at Wal-Mart. Seriously, that’s an actual rule — throughout the music industry, every A&R exec will consult with the marketing department and the artist to discuss whether they’d rather say “n*****” or be sold at Wal-Mart, ‘cause they can’t do both.

2. Chris Rock does indeed use the word in his standup act, with no editing-out for the HBO specials. But on his network show? No. Absolutely not. Never.

3. Does Dr Laura imagine there’s much overlap between her audience and Dave Chappelle’s? I wouldn’t have thought so. Nor do I think people who attend Jay-Z shows are big right-wing talk-radio fans.

Seriously, I wish Obama had the guts to make such a statement. He’s probably gonna lose in 2012 anyway, given the fact that a growing number of Americans think he’s a scary Mohammedan (one in five, and that was before his initial comments in support of Cordoba House, which will only make things worse). So he might as well go down supporting constitutional principles, not Clintonian triangulation or focus group backpedaling.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think the “Bush broke the economy” argument is worth the trouble. What is more important is recognizing just how bad things were in the fall of 2008. The credit markets were frozen. People seem to have forgotten what a scary and for most of us, unprecedented event that was.

Frozen credit markets. No commercial paper, no bonds, no loans, no nothing. Commercial lending still hasn’t fully recovered (for a bunch of reasons). Plus trillions of dollars of wealth destroyed. Did anyone really think that was just an everyday recession?

One obstacle for the housing recovery is that mortgages don’t have much chance of getting approved if the appraisal is lower than the mortgage amount, even with a buyer willing and qualified to pay more than that appraised value. Which for a bank would normally be a good idea I suppose, but we are emerging from or trying to emerge from a market crash and the prices for recent comparitives in the appraisal reflect the price drop. But if the bank won’t approve well qualified buyers for mortgage amounts higher than the currently depressed appraisals, then how do the prices move higher?

Must I again point out that the Democrats took over in 2006, at which time unemployment was low, and economic growth was high? And that, 2 years later, everything started falling apart.

Immediately after they took over Congress, filibusters started spiking to unprecedented levels. The GOP monkey-wrench machine was in full gear. The Dems couldn’t have done anything in 2007-2008 to mess up the economy that was already lurching towards the cliff.

It’s an appropriate response when they try to start blaming the state of the economy on Obama.

re: #495 garhighway

What is more important is recognizing just how bad things were in the fall of 2008. The credit markets were frozen. People seem to have forgotten what a scary and for most of us, unprecedented event that was.

Frozen credit markets. No commercial paper, no bonds, no loans, no nothing. Commercial lending still hasn’t fully recovered (for a bunch of reasons). Plus trillions of dollars of wealth destroyed. Did anyone really think that was just an everyday recession?

The conservatives have now successfully thrown all that data down the memory hole, and are convinced that everything was fine until Obama took office.

The CATO Institute says otherwise:

So what’s the final score? Let’s use an analogy. Obama’s FY2009 performance is like a relief pitcher who enters a game in the fourth inning trailing 19-0 and allows another run to score. The extra run is nothing to cheer about, of course, but fans should be far angrier with the starting pitcher.

Stimulus added millions of jobs in Q2

I like strong regulation of financial markets. And I don’t really see Republicans stepping up to regulate the hell out of financial and housing markets. it’s against their philosophy, it’s against the philosophies of the people they represent. It’s way way bigger than a president.

Well, it only tanked at the last moment before the election, so most of the campaigning was done before that. But I recall that prior to that period, he ran on a public option to rein in health care costs, a big shift to green energy to spur jobs, and financial regulation to prevent an economic collapse.

Since the economy did collapse before he took office, he had to do stimulus first. And since the Senate has been so boggged down, he’s only managed to deliver two out of those three items. But he isn’t the one bogging down the Senate.

My solution for a prosperous America: get rid of the remaining Republicans.

I don’t think you’re so naive that you thought two years ago during the campaign that any of the candidates had a real solution to these decades-in-the-making global economic problems.

Dems AND Republicans have spent the last 30+ years creating these deficits. No Dem OR Republican is gonna ride into town and fix it, certainly not within a couple of years. It’s gonna take a long time, and it’s gonna be painful.

You’re right in one respect: Obama sold us a bill of goods on fixing the economy—the same bill of goods every prez sells us. And each time we still fall for it.

And on that last part we can agree on.

re: #567 Walter L. Newton

No… let’s reduce this to the simple facts that I can’t tell anyone who to fix it, that’s way above my pay grade… but I am able to observe what is and isn’t happening… and I have no problem telling you what ever Obama is claiming will work… well… it isn’t.

And your “Does that mean no one should have run for president in 2008?” is silly hyperbole.

I just don’t understand this idea of why Obama should own this disaster. I don’t buy that for one second. Now, I will say that he needs to own his solution to the problem, and if it doesn’t fix anything then I’ll agree he messed up. I won’t however say he messed up simply for trying to fix a problem he never caused.

hopefully, not much.

That’s the problem. For a government to fix a broken economy quickly, it has to take control of most of it, and in a global situation, even that may not be enough.

With no governmental control, the state of the economy is up for grabs, it may self repair quickly, it may self repair slowly, or it may not self repair at all.

re: #561 brookly red

def bad… more def more bad…

next.

Actually, you are wrong.

Under most circumstances, “more def more bad” is a reasonable proposition. But going back to the beginning of 2009 it would have been the wrong thing. Going into a recession is when you want the government to take stimulative measures. Just letting the economy slide into deeper and deeper recession, and let negative feedback effects pile up, is a bad idea. No reputable economist would prescribe that.

The usual remedy was to use monetary policy to stimulate the economy by lowering interest rates. But that fix was unavailable: they were essentially already at zero. So what is left? Fiscal stimulus. You put money in circulation, ideally in ways that will see the money recirculate quickly and often. That does run up the debt, but this is precisely the time when that is worth it: you run some debt now to shorten the trough and speed the recovery.

One can argue about what kind of stimulative spending is best and how much to do. But cutting the deficit as you are sliding into a steep and nasty recession is economic suicide.

Obama’s mistake, generated by the political realities of the moment, was to not make the stimulus big enough. Whether he thought it should have been bigger but didn’t think he could get something bigger through Congress, or whether he, like most, underestimated the nastiness of this recession because this was such a unique beast, is unknown.

But cutting the deficit would have been economic stupidity. The time for that was six years or so prior.

I think it could have been fixed with three extremely commonsense rules.

1. You can’t sell something you don’t own. That would eliminate short-selling.

2. You can’t insure something you don’t own. That would eliminate the more shady types of derivatives.

3. All trading should be on open markets. That would put remaining derivatives out in the open so that players would be able to control their risk exposure.

These rules are so simple and normally easily understood, that it becomes an extremely difficult task to try to explain why we shouldn’t have them.

We are so far from collapse, it’s disgraceful to even talk like that. In the 1930’s, unemployment was at a level that is not even in the same universe as the problems we have now. People took jobs absolutely busting their ass for shit wages. And the thing is, they were happy to have the jobs. Today, we have a fraction of the unemployment rate, the jobs are much better, and we still bitch and compare our plight to that of the great depression. I’m not saying it’s not hard times, but there’s just no comparison. We are not close to collapse.

Remember how for the first few months of 2009 the Republican pundits were all over cable news every day screaming about how low the stock market was and that was all Obama’s fault? They’d say “it’s down 40% from this time last year, that must be his doing, OMG he’s destroying our 401k’s!!” even though he’d only been in office a month.

Now the market’s back up over 10,000 — up more than 30% from when he took office — but suddenly the president has nothing to do with market performance.

Well regarding FDR, it’s a good thing his right wing or left wing critics didn’t beat him. Most of them were rabid isolationists. Republicans would still have a strong isolationist wing IMO if Eisenhower hadn’t beat Robert Taft in the ‘52 primaries. And he got repaid for that by being called a Commie by the Birchers. That is exactly why if I were a Republican, I’d be pissed to see the return of the Birchers. Well other than the fact that the JBS are a bunch of kooks which goes without saying really.

re: #617 garhighway

How do you want him to be different?

I don’t necessarily. I think the bailouts were a necessary evil. And I don’t think whatever regulatory reforms we end up with would be much different from what Paulson would have supported.

My point is that some of the people Obama put in place have very similar philosophies to the people they replaced. For better or worse, there’s actually been some continuity from Bush to Obama. Overall Obama is a cautious moderate. Gates as SecDef is another example, in addition to Treasury. If Obama was intent on overseeing some drastic change in the use and scope of the American military (as the left wanted, and the right feared), he wouldn’t have kept Bush’s pentagon chief. Obama’s not the liberal that the “professional left” wanted, and he’s certainly not the scary radical imagined by the right.

The private sector is already covering that pretty well.

But what could use some gov’t assistance is desalination. Without it, the southwest is going to be in real trouble in a few years.

It didn’t get to where it had been until the war, but it was steadily recovering throughout, except for a small dip in ‘37 when FDR was convinced to try to balance the budget. Checkit:

[Link: ingrimayne.com…]

Good point. But we just had 3 consecutive quarters of GDP growth, while other indicators have stayed flat or gone south. So the GDP numbers aren’t the only relevant stat.

What may bolster your position, though, is the fact that unemployment dropped pretty dramatically in 1933, when GDP started to head back up. Maybe this was due to a large increase in federal spending, the “super-stimulus” that liberal economists wanted. Maybe not.

But what we’ve got now, unlike the 30s, may be the dreaded jobless recovery.

I’d say scratch out the first one. The growth effect of war only holds if the war requires economic mobilization and if your homeland isn’t hammered by the enemy. That would not work today, since the only nations strong enough to require mobilization to fight have nuclear weapons which makes war with them highly undesirable.

As for Cuba, an end to the embargo right now is unlikely, for the simple reason that Fidel doesn’t want it. With Cuba is very serious economic trouble right now, the Castro brothers need the embargo as a scapegoat. If it was lifted and things did not improve quickly (which they wouldn’t, because Cuba’s real economic problem is Communism), the Cuban public would likely start blaming the Castros for the bad times.

This is getting funnier by the moment. Now we are going to downsize Obama’s inability to get anything accomplished by comparing him to other well like and respected politicians who didn’t get things right.

Just like Windupbird, let’s downsize the expectations “In some ways, he’s exceeded my expectations. Pretty simple. My expectations were reasonable.”

If we keep this up, Obama will exceed all our expectations by leaps and bounds… er… by a hops, skips and jumps… er… a quiet walk…

Either you’re responding to someone else’s post or else you’ve misunderstood mine. My main contention is that no president can just fix a deep recession in a global economy. Not even the greats like FDR or St. Ronnie or Slick Willie. It’s naive to think they could, and it’s just silly to criticize them for not being magicians.

You listed it under “solutions.” Anybody who would propose a war just for side effects shouldn’t just lose elections, they should be instantly deported to the darkest depths of Hell.

Above in this very thread I’ve discussed extensively with Dark_Falcon the narrative that WWII fixed the Great Depression. I posted a number of charts showing steady and solid growth throughout the 30’s, with the economy by 1940 almost as back to being good as it was in ‘28. I think the results were inconclusive overall, but the narrative doesn’t really stand by itself.

But even if you think that war fixes economies, it’s possible to give total state control over to production without doing it for the purpose of killing people; just start supporting communists.

re: #569 palomino

I don’t think you’re so naive that you thought two years ago during the campaign that any of the candidates had a real solution to these decades-in-the-making global economic problems.

Dems AND Republicans have spent the last 30+ years creating these deficits. No Dem OR Republican is gonna ride into town and fix it, certainly not within a couple of years. It’s gonna take a long time, and it’s gonna be painful.

You’re right in one respect: Obama sold us a bill of goods on fixing the economy—the same bill of goods every prez sells us. And each time we still fall for it.

He sold some of us a bill of goods. Most of us knew it was a bill of goods, whether we voted for him or not. Believe it or not, a lot of people simply voted for President Obama because he was from the party that wasn’t in the White House at the time. There are lots of people who said, “‘Hope and Change’ is bullsh**, but it’s different, so we’ll give it a try.”

You like “green” but like coal? Pick one. You can’t have both.

“Islam did not attack the World Trade Center—Al Qaeda did.” Well, yes. But the attackers were heeding a verse in the Koran (47:4) commanding the faithful to fight the infidel until such time as they feel themselves subdued by Islam. That verse has not gone away post-9/11—nor will it ever. As Turkey’s Islamist prime minister explained not too long ago, “Islam is Islam.” Meaning Islam’s doctines are there for all to read—they are timeless and imutable. It is up to Muslims if and how they choose to heed them.

It works like this. You want respect, you give respect. It is my opinion that the imam should never have initiated the process to begin with. Where’s the understanding and bringing together people of different culture, religions and back rounds? In a word, ‘sensitivity. I will remember this the next time someone implores me to be sensitive and understanding and tolerant.

Yes, the imam has followed the rules and regulations required to build. I’m questioning his sincerity for the deep feelings of a large portion of Americans.

Btw, did you read the link? What do you think?

So before you can build a building in downtown Manhattan, you have to have “sincerity for the deep feelings of a large portion of Americans”?

Does that requirement apply to everyone or just Muslims? And explain the process for determining whether a given individual or entity has the appropriate level of sincerity. Is there a blood test? A written exam? Please explain further.

Yes.

But so what? When did we decide that there was a requirement that clerics pass a PC test before they can build a community center? What sort of exam shall we administer to them? How many questions are on it, and who gets to decide?

This microscopic examination into Rauf’s “true beliefs” misses the point. We don;’t do this for any other building. Why do you think we should do it now?

I have yet to hear a cogent explanation for why we are engaging in this forensic exam that doesn’t lead me to conclude that it is because he’s Muslim and for Muslims the rules are different. And that I cannot abide. It’s just wrong.
