I'm not convinced it's not already reality. That's about the level of analysis we already get on the Sunday am shows.

NEW ORLEANS - Customs agents discovered an extra ingredient in a shipment of Colombian coffee: nearly a half-ton of cocaine.

U.S. Customs officer Troy Simon said Thursday it was his agency's biggest cocaine find at the Port of New Orleans since more than two tons turned up in a transformer shipment about 10 years ago.

Good evening.

I laughed out loud when I saw this item:

New York Times Considers $5 Monthly Web-Access Fee

July 9 (Bloomberg) -- New York Times Co. said in a survey of print subscribers that it’s considering a $5 monthly fee for access to its namesake newspaper’s Web site.

Times Co. also asked whether subscribers would be willing to pay a discounted fee of $2.50 a month for access to the site, in the poll confirmed today by Catherine Mathis, a company spokeswoman. Nytimes.com, the most visited among newspapers’ sites, is currently free.

Times Co. is contemplating additional sources of revenue as marketers slow spending on the Internet. Ad sales at the publisher’s sites, also including about.com and boston.com, fell 8 percent and 3.5 percent in the first quarter and fourth quarter of 2008 respectively.

Hey NYT executives! Please start charging your customers on the web. In fact don't stop at $5, that's for pikers. Go the full monty and demand $20 a month...., and raise your news stand price too...., double it in fact. That's the ticket.

Confusion in the Administration?

Johnson Opens the Door to Post-Acquittal Detentions

Johnson said that “as a matter of legal authority,” the administration’s powers to detain someone under the law of war don’t expire for a detainee after he’s acquitted in court. “If you have authority under the law of war to detain someone” under the Supreme Court’s Hamdi ruling, “that is true irrespective of what happens on the prosecution side.”

So what's the point of sticking them in the civilian system if your going to hang on to them anyway? Why all the effort and cost of a trial?

Sounds like wanting to have their cake and eat it too.

Roland Burris won't run for Senate seat in 2010

U.S. Sen. Roland Burris has decided NOT to seek election to the seat he fought the government to keep.

Sen. Burris is planning to announce his decision Friday by issuing a statement to the press. But he’s reportedly not planning to field any questions from the press.
The decision by Burris was based on his inability to raise campaign funds; campaign disclosures with the Federal Election Commission are expected to be filed next week...and he has reportedly only raised approximately $20,000

Actually, I have it from a pretty good source that he only raised $750 in real money, the rest was dough he funneled to himself through friends to try to make it look better.

The United States, the growth of a single century, has already reached the foremost rank among nations, and is destined soon to outdistance all others in the race. In population, in wealth, in annual saving and public credit, in freedom from debt, in agriculture and in manufactures, America already leads the civilized world."

AIG back in the news:
AIG Seeks Clearance For More Bonuses

Friday, July 10, 2009

American International Group is preparing to pay millions of dollars more in bonuses to several dozen top corporate executives after an earlier round of payments four months ago set off a national furor.

The troubled insurance giant has been pressing the federal government to bless the payments in hopes of shielding itself from renewed public outrage.

The request puts the administration's new compensation czar on the spot by seeking his opinion about bonuses that were promised long before he took his post.

AIG doesn't actually need the permission of Kenneth R. Feinberg, who President Obama appointed last month to oversee the compensation of top executives at seven firms that have received large federal bailouts. But officials at AIG, whose federal rescue package stands at $180 billion, have been reluctant to move forward without political cover from the government.

"Anytime we write a check to anybody" it is highly scrutinized, said an AIG official, who declined to speak on the record because the negotiations with Feinberg are ongoing. "We would want to feel comfortable that the government is comfortable with what we are doing."

The payments coming due next week include $2.4 million in bonuses for about 40 high-ranking executives at AIG, according to administration documents from earlier this year. Though the actual sum may have changed since then, the payments are much smaller than those that caused the upheaval in March.

Still, officials at AIG and within the government see them as a land mine.

How is Bush going to get blamed for this by the Democrats? You know he will, I'm just curious how they do it.

Plant a pecan tree and grow some nutz!

"What was the reaction of Executive Compensation Czar Feinburg to the news that AIG was contemplating new bonuses?"

"Mr. Feinburg is not an employee of AIG and has no input regarding our compensation policies. His opinion was not taken into consideration. Next question?"

Teen pregnant after ‘swimming in pool’

A WOMAN is suing an Egyptian hotel claiming her daughter got pregnant - from using the swimming pool.

Magdalena Kwiatkowska's 13-year-old returned to Poland from their holiday expecting a baby.

Magdalena believes the teenager conceived from stray sperm after taking a dip in the hotel's mixed pool. She is now seeking compensation from the hotel.

A travel industry source said: "The mother is adamant that her daughter didn't meet any boys while she was there.

"She is determined to go ahead with the case."

Tourist authorities in Warsaw, Poland, have confirmed they received the bizarre complaint.

Calling 3 Wood, (I have a baseball question..)

What's better for a young hitter, an aluminum or wood bat? Common knowledge is the ball has more pop from an aluminum bat, but I think the wood bat has a bigger sweet spot because they are heavier.

Odd thing is I haven't seen a single wood bat in watching and coaching LL for 4 years. But my 14 YO tried one today at BP and loved it for the pop and distance. Could it be the aluminum bats the team has are old and lost their pop?

Just wondering..

Forget gas, batteries — pee is new power source

Urine-powered cars, homes and personal electronic devices could be available in six months with new technology developed by scientists from Ohio University.

Using a nickel-based electrode, the scientists can create large amounts of cheap hydrogen from urine that could be burned or used in fuel cells. "One cow can provide enough energy to supply hot water for 19 houses," said Gerardine Botte, a professor at Ohio University developing the technology. "Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel."

The only way you can get pregnant from swimming in a hotel pool is if you're having sex in that pool.

People have mentioned the chemicals in the pool, but another issue is temperature. Sperm can stay viable inside the vagina for (i think) up to 3 days,(yikes!), but sperm rapidly degrades if not 'stored' at the right temperature.

From physics, the amount of energy the ball gets from the bat is a function of both the bat and ball speed and mass, the angle of the impact and how much energy is absorbed by the bat and the ball in the collision. You want an elastic collision but that isn't possible in the real world. Somewhere there is a maximum value of bat speed, weight and elasticity, a perfect match of bat and batter.

Hit Baseball to the chest at the precise moment can trigger Ventricular
Defibrillation - throw the heart's electrical system out of sync and causes the heart to beat uncontrollably. You've got about a minute to figure out what is going on and SLAM your fist down into the ribcage over the heart as hard as possible to reset it.

Thankfully, it has to happen at the exact moment between beat when the heart's electrical system is reloading itself for the next beat to trigger Vent Defib, which is why 99.99% of all baseball strikes to the chest leave the player rolling on the ground thinking that a mule just kicked him.

re: #170 Mich-again

From physics, the amount of energy the ball gets from the bat is a function of both the bat and ball speed and mass, the angle of the impact and how much energy is absorbed by the bat and the ball in the collision. You want an elastic collision but that isn't possible in the real world. Somewhere there is a maximum value of bat speed, weight and elasticity, a perfect match of bat and batter.

Um, hi ya Mitch! If you say so!

I recall a story -- it may be a "sea story" -- about a couple in the ACW. He was wounded in a place which is guaranteed to make all of us mere males cringe. The bullet supposedly went through one of his family jewels and finally lodged in the abdomen of a spectator, an otherwise virgin girl.

Got her right in the Fallopian tubes. As she recuperated, it was noticed that she was pregnant. The story I heard said that the soldier hunted down and married the girl, and they lived more or less Happily Ever After.

I think there is still a certain element of the population that believes the newspapers, and evening news as being 100% trustworthy fact - elderly people in my family would have sworn that Dan Rather was as trustworthy as Jesus, for example.

Got her right in the Fallopian tubes. As she recuperated, it was noticed that she was pregnant. The story I heard said that the soldier hunted down and married the girl, and they lived more or less Happily Ever After.

A child that was into everything was plundering in his brother's closet and found a tube of little golden candies. He ate one - hard as a rock, but didn't taste that bad. He had another and another, and finally just poured the entire tube into his mouth.

"JUNIOR!" his mother screamed, and the next thing he knows, he's sitting on the exam table at the doctors office.

"Doctor, my son swallowed an entire tube of B-Bs!" So the doctor checks the boy out, takes x rays, and finally says "Mam, I think he's going to be ok. They just have to work his way through his system like anything would. Bring him back next week and we'll do a follow up x ray and make sure nothing is stuck."

They hadn't been home an hour when the little boy came running into the room. "MOM! I was playing with my wee-wee and shot the dog!"

I think they are.

Mich, buy him two wood bats - one about 3 ounces heavier than the other. Practice with the heavier bat. During games, use the lighter bat. He'll get around on the pitch so fast it will scare him!

Pick a bat weight by handing him a bat and telling him to hold it with one hand, and extend that arm away from his body (like he'd hold his arms if he were pretending to fly.) The other arm is in it's normal position. When he gets a bat that feels comfortable being held like that, that's the one. Then pick the heavier bat.

"IMNSHO, the WSJ does a better job with far less bias and smug posturing." I agree with that one - a lot. The WSJ however has a major advantage over the NYT; the WSJ uses, you know, editors. Most of their news is fairly straight forward reporting - and that's what I hate so much about the NYT and AP and Rueters - they'll report ANY story, for example, about the Palestinians and even though totally unrelated to the story, they'll get a shot in at Israel.

I can pretty much agree with all that. With one caveat - Michelle Obama has said some things that have really worried and irritated me (like the "for the first time..." comment, etc...) but even I wouldn't refer to her by terms that could be construed as racial. Being a minority myself, I am, perhaps, more sensitive about that sort of thing. The "First Wookie" crap? There's a lot to criticize her for, politically, but it has nothing to do with race, or her appearance, and everything to do with being ugly on the inside, IMHO.

I hear you. Knowing that she's friends with Bernardine Dohrn has that effect on me. Then there's the "for the first time I am proud" comment and her association with Rev. Wright's church. If she manages to lay low in light of this then I think things will be acceptable to an extent. Otherwise I'm not too happy about the current status.

The other advantage that the WSJ has over the NYT is that the WSJ likes to use something called "facts." I don't think the NYT even knows what those are.

When I played in Little League, wood bats were not banned but no one would use them because when you got a hit with one it hurt your hands almost as bad as getting hit by a pitch. Perhaps this is only a problem when you are a 4th grader though.

Ah, no. When I played in High School, even though I infrequently made contact with the ball, there were times when I'd get stingers, too.
I'm just an old coot - I don't like artificial turf, I don't like the Designated Hitter and Night Baseball always makes me feel a little weird. And the smell of reisin on the bat handles, the smell of a grass diamond, and not watching guys playing at night while still wearing either sunglasses or smearing that black anti-glare crap under their eyes is all baseball for me.
BTW, no less a GREAT ballplayer than Ted Williams said that night baseball was SO BAD, that even the greatest hitters would NEVER break the .400 BA ever again.

Apropos of nothing: In Italy (where the summit is being held), Obama would not legally be eying someone under the age of consent. That age is a maximum of 16 there. He's still a married man and should not be doing that, but I just wanted to know the legalities of what he was doing.

The point isn't that it was illegal or impeachable or any of that nonsense. It's that it was stunningly boorish and creepy behavior on the part of our President. If I caught a 40-something man checking out my obviously underage 16 year old daughter like that, I'd have words with him.

And another terrific memory: high school classes coming to a halt during the World Series. We were in our scheduled classrooms - each teacher, or a well-off student, would bring in a huge old portable radio (holding about 16 lbs of batteries!), and everyone would listen to the game(s). When baseball was clean - and was still America's game, and teachers, principals, and knew what really mattered

Wow...you know that cemetary where they arrested people for digging up graves? I just read it's where Emmett Till was buried.

I have a personal interest in this story, as a (now deceased) musician friend of mine named Roby Duke was the son of one of the defense witnesses in the trial (very unfortunately); the murder happened very near the house he grew up in. I'd known Roby for fifteen years, and the last time we performed together, we spent a lot of time talking backstage and he told me all about it.

He has written an incredible Mississippi blues-style song about it, that is definitely worth hearing - if you want to listen, click on the track called demodraft at myspace.com/robydukemusic.

400 jvic  Thu, Jul 9, 2009 10:59:07pm

Oh, for pity's sake.

1. I agree with the person who said that Obama should have had the presence of mind not to stare.

2. But an attractive young woman walked by and, like Sarkozy, he didn't have the presence of mind not to look. What was he supposed to do, ask for her ID? Would it make any difference if she was 18?

3. I'm thinking that on the 19th-century frontier, that young woman would be being courted and might be married. Arbitrary age boundaries might be necessary in modern society, but they are arbitrary. They are not grounded in some fundamental reality.

4. Making an issue of her age makes as much sense to me as getting exercised over whether or not Alexander the Great was gay.

5. Tell me that this is evidence Obama is not ready for prime time and I ask what else is new. Tell me that his behavior is somehow depraved and...I don't know what to say.

When I think Mississippi blues, I think RL Burnside.

It has never been so much my thing and I can't say I'm familiar with RL Burnside (will check it out though), but Roby was outstanding. When I found out the backstory about his family connection to this famous murder, I was shocked. Roby, of course, didn't have a racist bone in his body.

I was thinking about this very thing the other day, especially when I read a great post buzz wrote about the indignities black people suffered before the Civil Rights Movement, as contrasted with the bullhorn-loving Al Sharpton who, in contrast, just doesn't have it that bad.

Poor Emmett Till. He was just a kid. Just a child, really. His picture is stunning, when you put it together with his story.

Anger issues, yes, and she looks like a beyatch. During this recession, the amount of money she spends on her clothing, and her daughters is obscene. I cannot imagine Laura Bush doing the same. And she always looked like a lady.

Taking the girls on all the trips must be a concern to the battallion of guards, etc., and I wonder just how much her mother actually does for the little girls.

Children are usually a result of their parenting, and she brought up a snotty daughter who 'never liked America until The One was elected dictator. Can her mother really be that different?

but Bat, if 'being a gentleman' means never ever doing a doubletake when you see something like that....let's put it this way, stealing from dorothy parker:

"he was every other inch an gentlemen."

:)

LOL! That was good!

Too true, and I had to listen to Lionel Ritchie...that voice! I am saving it, as I am making a serious attempt to go to sleep.

Laura Bush is a lady....a true lady. And that she and the President look so happy together? They could not fake it. I miss them soooo much.

re: #413 iceweasel

The way men learn not to look is two things: Expect it and peripheral vision. It's not hard if you practice. I have people watching me, sometimes taking pictures, sometimes I work around lots of security cameras. if I was a public figure with the press on me all the time, I would certainlyhave it down. This guy is just inexperienced.

He could have been leering at someone who was 26 or older, I still would find it crass.

Looking at pretty girls is pretty normal. Charle even had a thread on the Bush Volleyball pictures.

Bush.

wow, unfortunate representation

Looking at my area, you'd say 'Ok yeah that makes sense'.

Lots of easily dazzled middle-class 'moderates' (read squishy liberals) in MN District 5.

lol! What was he doing? Not just looking! Look, you have to be able to converse with attractive women without giving them a hard time about their looks. Sometimes they just want a break from it.

I meant I wasn't sitting there having coffee with them, and of course, her action in that context points out a quality that so many public figures lack, but the great ones don't.

Bet that Mrs. Bush would have invited you to the family quarters for a cup of coffee if you had asked!

And Mrs. Bush is an example of a lady, and IMHO, after living through Presidents and their families since 1938? Laura Bush was the first real First Lady we had, and she complimented the President, who we all could see adored her.

Oh, how I miss them.

Iceweasel, as a heterosexual male who has been taught all my life that women do not want to be ogled, I thought that that photo showed that President Obama has learned nothing from the women's movement of the last 40 years. Personally, I was scopin' out the booty.

Indeed, it was a nice boo-tay. Not lying, nor involved in any way with politics. Ogle away!

However, that was very oppressive of women in general and I am very oppressed and intend to file a lawsuit, I am shocked, SHOCKED!

Same to you! Sweet dreams. I really am half asleep. Shhh, please don't tell Albore, but in what is nearly mid-July, we have to use a light duvet on the bed, as it is 54 degrees here, and a bit windy. We have not hit 80 yet in our suburb...very strange, and the metro NYC are is usually hazy, hot, and humid. We have had enough rain to mail it to anyone who needs it!

The most interesting part to me is how the Bush volleyball thread was basically "go George" , not as much when a BHO did it.
I'll admit, I've been caught looking without even knowing I was doing it.

:( I'll try.

Seriously, it's ok to be looked at and us third-wave feminists like it, I promise. Just make sure to keep your eyes on our face when we're talking to you, and we're ok.

/true story: once had to tell a colleague a complicated story about something we (the company) had to do. Guy never looked above my neck, kept nodding.

At the end of this I turn to leave and he says ---wait wait, Ice, I'm so sorry but I didn't hear a word you said. Laughing!

// Granted, I was younger then, but believe me, this kind of shit happens all the time to women.

437 kateca  Thu, Jul 9, 2009 11:47:16pm

Dear President Obama:

Keep doing what you're doing because your approval ratings are dropping and more and more people are sorry that they voted for you.

I personally don't care that you ogled a woman but I admit I take some perverse delight at your amateur mistakes. I keep hoping your blind supporters will get their wake-up call and see you for the fraud you are.

Good point. I've also been puzzled lately when public figures (not just BHO) are said to be "glaring," "staring," or "ogling" in a still photograph. All these actions, by definition, require a duration of at least a second or two, don't they? (At least, I've argued that to my wife before.)

With outdoor photos often using shutter speeds of 1/000 second or faster, how do you know where a person's eyes were focusing 1/000 second before or after the one shot? Wouldn't it take a video to tell a glance from an ogle?

I have the self-control not to glare, stare, or ogle inappropriately in public. But I glance at everything in my field of view. Everything. Young, elderly, animal, vegetable, mineral. With a still camera pointed at you, all it takes is a glance and you're sunk. Trust me on this.

Let he/she who is without glance cast the first stone.

It's very easy to snap a pic now catching that one second that's unflattering to a public figure. I'm thinking of that photo all the crazy right wing blogs loooove to claim show that Michelle 'glared' at Carla Bruni. Despite the fact that they got along well, and the literally thousands of photos attesting to that, and all the evidence attesting that they did.

I had a similar feeling every time a lefty site posted a photo 'proving' Bush was a moron, btw, because they caught him making an odd face.
