Wingnut Fail of the Day: Obama Didn’t Proclaim Easter (But Neither Has Any Other President)

Derp
Wingnuts • Views: 47,869

There’s yet another right wing fake outrage brewing, and again it’s about painting President Obama as a Muslim-loving “other” who hates good American Christians.

The reliably xenophobic Fox Nation is the source: WH Fails to Release Easter Proclamation.

President Obama failed to release a statement or a proclamation recognizing the national observance of Easter Sunday, Christianity’s most sacred holiday.

By comparison, the White House has released statements recognizing the observance of major Muslim holidays and released statements in 2010 on Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid-ul-Adha.

See where they’re going with this?

I guess the Easter Prayer Breakfast wasn’t enough. Obama must “proclaim.”

But wait — it gets even more ridiculous. Here’s the complete list of official Presidential Proclamations, going back to 1789. I scanned back to 1980, and didn’t find a single Presidential Easter proclamation. That’s right. Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush — none of them issued official Easter proclamations.

And that’s why this silly Fox News-inspired fake outrage is our wingnut Fail of the Day.

Fox: In 2010, Obama was criticized for releasing an all-inclusive Easter greeting. He reached out to Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and people of no faith at all in a statement about a holiday that is uniquely Christian.

That explains the rabbits and the eggs. I was wondering.

If you watch the video above, Obama's speech is really nice, very religious, and the idea that someone could choose to be offended in spite of that is so dumb it gives me a headache.

Well, I think it's usually up to someone like the Pope or the Patriarch to do it.

The President gets to proclaim Thanksgiving because it is an American feast, and he acts as chief executive of the Republic. He is not qualified to say if it's Easter or not (which is kind of a complicated and politically volatile subject anyway).

The weakest believers are the ones who cry the loudest about being persecuted.

I'm about sick of some Christians thinking they're being persecuted because their kids have to go to school on Good Friday to make up a snow day, or because Obama didn't "proclaim" Easter. GTFO with that garbage. You're not being persecuted.

22 Killgore Trout  Mon, Apr 25, 2011 11:42:37am

Palin's Easter Derp has some pretty unique theology...

Easter is the celebration of what hope really means. In Jesus’ triumph over death through His Resurrection, we believe that death was defeated and hope became the expectation of eternal life with God.

Hope is the great driving force in many of our lives, and it has been the driving force in our country’s history. America has always had a strong sense that God’s providence is abundant, that no challenge can ever be too great and no enemy too strong. It was this hope that inspired us to carve a nation out of the wilderness, to appreciate opportunities to responsibly utilize nature’s resources, to engineer skyscrapers towering over our gleaming cities, and to fly to the moon.

I don't recall anything in my Catholic upbringing about death being defeated as if there was some battle. I also like the angle that JC defeated death just like America defeated nature.

It's an insult to people who are really being persecuted out there where they you know are punished for being of a different belief. I remember Jon Kyl's outrageous assertation that because Harry Reid wanted the Congress in session on the weekend following Christmas that Reid was attacking Christianity.

I have a question for the Christians on LGF (this was previously discussed with various members of my father's parish yesterday while we had post-Mass drinks).

Pogo.com has a whole thing where you can dress up a little online paper doll called a 'mini'. They release different outfits and accessories and backgrounds for them, and subscribers pay with tokens earned through games playing.

In among their Easter bonnets and egg-hunt backgrounds this year was something described as 'Historic Tomb', which is a little cave with a discarded shroud left lying on a slab. Yes, for just 15,000 tokens, you can put your mini in Jesus' empty tomb!!

This struck me as tasteless. One of the ladies from the parish thought it was nice. Everyone else was too confused to comment.

Thoughts?

Well, our Puritan forebears would have had him in the stocks for even mentioning it was going to be Christmas, so things have gotten better for Christians since the Christians lost power...wait, this is getting convoluted.

Apparently, defeating death was the plan all along. Had Judas not have turned in Christ, God's plan for a resurrection would have been all fouled up. Some early texts made Judas a hero for going along. If you believe the Bible, Christ was the only man that ever walked the earth that knew for sure he was going to a better place, unlike the atheist that gives his life for a lessor goal than saving mankind from sin.

This government is no different than women with credit cards. As long as they can charge it they don’t think about how to pay for it; as long as they get to buy what they want instead of what we NEED. Any financial manager with half a brain (which is twice as much as any politician) will tell you to “CUT UP THE CREDIT CARDS!”, reorganize and concentrate on paying off your debt. But this is what happens when politicians have unlimited control over taxpayer dollars.

53 Petero1818  Mon, Apr 25, 2011 12:09:06pm

The reality is that this year the President did NOT make a statement recognizing Easter, intentionally. Last year he did, and he was criticized in that he attempted to be inclusive to minority religions on Easter.
It seems to me that an African American man who was partially raised as a Muslim, may actually have some understanding and appreciation for how minorities experience life in so called secular societies dominated by Christianity. He goes out of his way to recognize minority religions, and goes out of his way to not push a state religion on others. Lets face reality. Christians don't require the President recognize Easter in a statement. They see images of him at a prayer breakfast, they seem him at church, the entire government and every service it provides shuts down for the holiday. Most private businesses are closed.
For Jews and Muslims and other non Christians in Western democracies, it is a point of some pride and acceptance to have the government say out loud: "I know we aren't shutting down services and I am not myself going to mosque or synagogue, but we want to recognize that this is important for you, and wish you well on this holiday". For Christians to not understand this difference, is more of the same from a delusional "oppressed" majority.

Atlas Flops
Box Office: 'Atlas Shrugged' collapses, even without a NY Times review

Overall, the weekend's take was a scant $879,000 -- a whopping 48 percent drop despite adding 166 locations. Which certainly suggest they're running out of audience quick.

That means that at some locations, distributor Rocky Mountain Pictures will be writing checks to theaters to cover the difference between receipts and operating expenses. The only way they're likely to get the 1,000 screens the producers say they want next weekend is to rent them. And, as Kyle put it at his personal blog, "Whether the sequels get made is purely a matter of how much desire the producers have for losing money.''

Doesn't Look Like Atlas Shrugged Will Be Out-Grossing Avatar After All

As of this writing, the film has grossed just over $3 million, compared to a reported production cost of about $20 million.

Sorry, I never got the whole sacrifice deal.

before the temple in jerusalem was destroyed, jews brought animals to sacrifice there. there were different kinds of sacrifice: for thanks, for remission of sins, etc. in the new testament book letter to the hebrews, the case is made that all sacrifices at the temple are superseded by the sacrifice of jesus, which takes care of all the sacrifices for remission of sins for all time - so jews can stop sacrificing at the temple and just believe in Him

less than 50 years after jesus death, the temple was of course destroyed by the romans. it was the only place were jews could sacrifice, and ever since it was destroyed, we jews have not sacrificed animals to give thanks and for remission of sins, but have substituted charity as the appropriate sacrament for modern people

so, the idea that jesus' death was a sacrifice has been cut off from the root experience that gave it its original meaning and has become difficult for modern people to understand

My favorite deal with the tracfone is the one year deal. I don't use that many minutes, and I only have to think about it once a year.

I spent an extra five bucks to get the phone with the double minutes, mostly because it was a newer version and I figured it would be supported better, longer.

I pay a hundred and fifty bucks a month for my phone. Use it constantly.

I don't know how y'all live!

My father also runs a business off of his phone, and uses more minutes in a week than I do in a year. Well, maybe a month. He uses a lot.

I would use it, if I talked a lot on phones, to gossip and surf the web.

143.00 month. Four phones (me, wife, kids) unlimited surfing, texting, cell-to-cell calling. Only limits are when we call land lines (seldom).

I get a 25% discount because I work for a company that has a deal with sprint.

Droid too.

I'm shocked. Shocked that the no one was flocking to see the movie. Full breakout from the weekend is here. The opening weekend did have a very impressive per screen take ($6k), but that's dropped off considerably and now is well below those in the top 10. Far from being a hit in the making, it's looking to be a flop and that 2d and 3d installments aren't going to happen.

re: #88 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Gas prices have the potential to dominate the headlines for the foreseeable future, but how exactly is the President of the US (whoever it is) supposed to affect the market? No president has that kind of power, and releasing the SPR for a market fluctuation isn't going to change the price considering the amount of oil consumed daily.

Opening up new areas to drilling wont reduce prices in the short term either, nor does it mean that new gas supplies occur instantaneously.

It takes years before new wells come on line, new refineries get built, etc.

So we are going to have to deal with higher energy prices - as a result of the economy slowly improving that increases demand, which in turn acts as a brake on economic growth since the cost for energy is a drain on the economic expansion and reduces funds that can be spent on other goods and services.

Obama is the first president since Eisenhower to miss the American Legion's Salute to Heroes ball. A Legion spokesman says it "does not feel offended or 'snubbed,'" and Medal of Honor recipients were invited to the Commander in Chief's ball, which Obama did attend.

It is true that Obama did not attend the Salute to Heroes Inaugural Ball, and that his absence broke a 14-inauguration streak. Vice President Joe Biden did attend the ball, showing up around 11:30. American Legion spokesperson Craig Roberts told FactCheck.org that the president, vice president and first lady have all traditionally attended.

The American Legion released two statements on the matter, saying that "The Legion does not feel offended or 'snubbed' by the President’s failure to appear," expressing gratitude for Biden's appearance, and adding that "there are much more important issues to dwell on."

We reproduce both statements here, just as they were e-mailed to us from the Legion...

Barbour says he won't run for president

"This has been a difficult, personal decision, and I am very grateful to my family for their total support of my going forward, had that been what I decided," Barbour (pictured), a Republican, said in a statement.

“A candidate for president today is embracing a 10-year commitment to an all-consuming effort, to the virtual exclusion of all else," the statement continued. "His (or her) supporters expect and deserve no less than absolute fire in the belly from their candidate. I cannot offer that with certainty, and total certainty is required."

This reminds me of the "discussion" on gay marriage. If gays get married, than it ruins my straight marriage. If a president doesn't proclaim a holiday, than my god doesn't exist or something like that.

Bottom line, we need better public education.

We need more people who understand that you can be a person of faith in a pluralist society. No, a pluralist society will not hold your hand and constantly reassure you that you're doing right--but it will permit you to hold deep beliefs and live a life in accordance with them.

Pretty good deal.

It occurred to me that "sans" can mean "in the absence of."

So "Comic Sans" could mean "without humor."

Pretty f'n appropriate for the wingnut font, methinks.

Sans means sans serif, i.e. "in the absence of" serifs. It's become the default comic font now, but there are other opinions.

A lot of Christians, from the early days to modern times, have been slaves. These were people with few to no legal rights, no control over their own lives, their families, their bodies--but they had faith.

How the hell does some schmuck leading a comfortable life in twenty-first century America get off feeling that he needs special pats to believe and is being oppressed if he doesn't get them?

Uh-oh...Donald Trump lost the Charlie Sheen vote!

Charlie Sheen told his audience that he would not be voting for Donald Trump anytime soon. Then he told the crowd a story about a dinner he was supposed to have with "The Donald" a few years ago, back when Sheen was still married to Brooke Mueller, and how it ended with Trump giving Sheen a pair of knock-off cuff links.

...snip...

Long story short: A few months later, as Sheen and his wife were divorcing and lawyers were divvying up the wealth, they had the gift cuff links appraised. They weren't Harry Winstons, it turns out. They weren't platinum. They weren't gold either. And those diamonds? Cubic zirconium. He said the cuff links appraised for about 60 bucks. Thinking of Trump, Sheen shot out a "You're fired!"

So, the Donald wears zircs... Impressive.

Speaking of gas prices, a couple of NY GOP state politicians are calling for a state tax holiday. One is Greg Ball, who made news for hearings patterned on Rep. King's hearings on Islamists in the US, and the other is James Tedisco:

Tedisco and Ball are introducing legislation (see attached PDF) to suspend the three separate state taxes on fuel – the 8-cent excise tax, the 8-cent sales tax and the 17-cent Petroleum Business Tax – during the busy four-day Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day holiday weekends, providing consumers an immediate savings of 33-cents per gallon of gasoline – about $5 to $6 a fill-up.

At an average of $4.07 a gallon, New York ranks sixth in the nation and second to Connecticut in the Northeast for highest gas prices.

The lawmakers are also calling for investments in alternative energy research and development such as the Alternative Fuel Incentive Fund (A.1509 ) to create green jobs, protect the environment and enhance national security.

Considering the precarious nature of the state budget, suspending the tax would affect the budget that was recently enacted. The alt energy r&d bill does seem like a good idea, although I'm not sure how that would get funded either.

This dizzy dizzy girl that I used to carpool with once referred to an armory we were passing as being 'Good if we ever get into another war'.

Then she dug in worse by saying 'I mean a real war'.

The driver of the car was a decorated military veteran who used to be on funeral detail, and had knocked on the front doors of many, many poor families to deliver the news that their son or daughter had made that sacrifice for our nation.

Some people, man.

What I consider one of the funniest TV bit's ever...

Colin Pillock: It's my great pleasure to welcome back Reginald Perrin, the former head of the amazing Grot shops chain. I understand you're now running a community called "Perrins", Mr. Perrin?

Reginald Perrin: Yes.

Colin Pillock: It's been described as a community for the middle-aged and the middle-class in what used to be Middlesex.

Reginald Perrin: Yes.

Colin Pillock: Tell me, Mr. Perrin, are you running this community for the benefit of humanity, or simply to make money, or is it a giant confidence trick?

Reginald Perrin: Yes.

Colin Pillock: I hope you're not going to tie yourself to this monosyllabic repetition of "yes".

Reginald Perrin: No.

Colin Pillock: Oh good, because our viewers might think it a waste of time for you to come here and say nothing BUT "yes".

Reginald Perrin: Yes.

Colin Pillock: So, which of them is it, Mr. Perrin? A social venture for the benefit of mankind? Purely a commercial venture? Or a con trick?

Reginald Perrin: Yes. It's all three of them. That's the beauty of it.

Colin Pillock: What kind of people come to this community?

Reginald Perrin: Well, at the moment we've got a stockbroker, an overworked doctor, an underworked antiques shop owner, a disillusioned imports manager, and an even more disillusioned exports manager. Three sacked football managers, a fortune teller who's going to have a nervous breakdown next April, a schoolteacher who's desperate because he can't get a job, a schoolteacher who's even more desperate because he has got a job, an extremely shy vet, an overstressed car salesman and a pre-stressed concrete salesman. People with sexual problems, people with social problems, people with work problems, people with identity problems. People with sexual, social, work and identity problems. People who live above their garages, and above their incomes, in little boxes on prestige estates where families are two-tone, two-car and two-faced. Money has replaced sex as a driving force, death has replaced sex as a taboo, and sex has replaced bridge as a social event for mixed foursomes, and large deep freezes are empty except for twelve sausages. They come to Perrins in the hope that they won't be ridiculed as petty snobs, but as human beings who are bewildered at the complexity of social development, castrated by the conformity of a century of mass production, and dwarfed by the immensity of technological progress which has advanced more in fifty years than in the rest of human existence put together, so that when they take their first tentative steps into an adult society shaped by humans but not for humans, their personalities shrivel up like private parts in an April sea.

Colin Pillock: I, er, I see...

Reginald Perrin: Not too monosyllabic for you, I hope?

Ha!

Over the weekend, De Niro, a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, slammed Trump in an NBC News interview.

"I won't mention names, but certain people in the news the last couple weeks, just, what are they doing?" said De Niro. "It's crazy. They're making statements about people that they don't even back up. Go get the facts before you start saying things about people.

"It's like a big hustle; It's like being a car salesman," said De Niro, who later said he was referring to Trump. "Don't go out there and say things unless you can back them up. How dare you? That's awful to do. To just go out and speak and say these terrible things? Unless you just wanna get over and get the job. It's crazy."

Never shy, Trump fired back on Monday in an interview with Fox & Friends.

"I like [De Niro's] acting, but in terms of when I watch him doing interviews and various other things, we're not dealing with Albert Einstein," Trump said. "He can say what he wants, but the fact is that this guy [Obama] has not revealed his birth certificate. A lot of people agree with me."

OK America! DeNiro or Trump? Sheesh. This guy is such a loser.

Unbelievable.

You know, I understand that some of my own humor may go over the line of propriety at some point (like my Boss Hawg bit above where I mock family values types with skeletons in their closets)...but calling for people to be killed??!

I will be amazed if we get through the next election season without gunfire or a bombing. The right wing has been radicalized past the point of talking them down, and it will take something utterly shocking to discredit them. Oklahoma City wasn't enough it seems, and the idea that they may end up doing something worse is terrifying.

Rick Scott to EPA: Water guidelines aren’t necessary here

The day after the Florida House passed a bill to ban implementation of water quality standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Administration, Gov. Rick Scott on Friday asked the agency to rescind a January 2009 determination that the federal rules are necessary for Florida.

Opponents of the federal requirement say the state is better equipped to decide how best to comply with the federal Clean Water Act, which is intended to manage nitrogen and phosphorous pollution of lakes, rivers, streams and bays. They say the EPA standards will be costly to implement, don’t address specific conditions of local waterways and provide little biological benefit.

According to Scott’s office, the petition sent to the EPA details eight pollution control measures already in place Florida that mirror EPA recommendations for effective water pollution control.

“Florida is one of the few states that has a comprehensive program in place to address excess nutrients, and we continue to lead the nation in developing innovative tools to ensure the health of our state’s waterways,” Scott said in a prepared statement. “I look forward to working with the EPA to reach an agreement that will promote clean water standards in the way that makes the most sense for our state.”

The U.S. EPA released pollution standards for Florida waterways in December 2010 as part of a 2009 legal settlement with environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, who sued the agency for not enforcing the Clean Water Act in Florida.

re: #333 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Carl Hiassen wrote about this a month ago. Somehow, given that residents favored the regs roughly 10 to 1, it's really unsurprising that Scott has taken this position. What a maroon.

Hiassen: Muddying the Waters

A few years ago, residents along the eastern St. Lucie River watched in disgust as the waterway turned green with a foul slime that wouldn’t go away.

Health officials warned people to stay away from the river. Birds and fish got sick. Property values dived to new lows, while politicians holding jarfuls of crud grimaced for the TV cameras and vowed to take action.

The mystery ooze was caused by nutrients dumped into Lake Okeechobee from farms, groves and ranchlands, churned by hurricanes and then pumped out by state water managers at the rate of 26,000 gallons per second.

It was a suffocating act of pollution that could easily happen again, because the polluters still steer water policy, and the politicians.

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, a Republican from Tequesta, recently tacked a rider on the federal budget package that would prohibit the Environmental Protection Agency from enacting tighter restrictions on the amount of phosphorous and nitrogen that may be flushed into Florida’s public waters.

The EPA rules, devised in conjunction with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, have been the subject of several public hearings. Public comments were 10-to-1 in favor of the regulations.

Critics say compliance would be too expensive for farms, small business and public utilities. State agriculture officials estimated a potential loss of 14,000 jobs, a sky-is-falling prediction that will never come to pass.

Rooney’s lead role in trying to block the pollution guidelines is interesting because he supposedly represents all those folks along the St. Lucie who got slimed back in 2005.

In a lame oped column defending his position, the congressman wrote that the new EPA rules “could cost our state’s economy about $2 billion, and would double the average family’s water bill.”

It’s a preposterous statement, pure fiction, but the aim isn’t to inform people. The aim is to scare them. The script (and dire predictions) come from lobbyists for Big Agriculture, municipalities and corporate interests who freely use Florida’s lakes, bays and rivers as a latrine.

Rooney doesn’t use the word “polluters.” He calls them “job creators.”

Poll: Over half of Egypt wants end to Israel peace

More than half of all Egyptians would like to see the 1979 peace treaty with Israel annulled, according to results of a poll conducted by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center released Monday.

The poll highlights the deep unpopularity of the three-decade-old treaty, which is central to U.S. policy in the region and was scrupulously adhered to by former President Hosni Mubarak, who was ousted Feb. 11.

The poll also revealed that most Egyptians are optimistic about where the country is headed following the 18-day popular uprising, and they look forward to greater democracy in their country.

The fall of Egypt's autocratic leader and the rise of a more democratic system, however, could threaten relations with neighbor Israel.

According to the poll results, only 36 percent of Egyptians are in favor of maintaining the treaty, compared with 54 percent who would like to see it scrapped.

Despite the decades of peace and limited trade between the two countries, most Egyptian view the Israelis poorly, largely because of perceptions that they mistreat the Palestinians.

Opinions varied according to income, with 60 percent of lower income Egyptians supporting the treaty's cancellation while only 45 percent of the wealthier classes thinking it should be done away with.
Only 40 percent of Egyptians with a college education thought the treaty should be scrapped, as well.

[...]

One thing that strikes me is the similarities between nations as far as social and educational status impacting the hatred-of-the-other basic instinct.

That the poorer and less educated Egyptians are persuaded by anti-Israeli propaganda parallels well what we see in our own country, in how certain segments of the American population are manipulated to hate the other.

A Rhode Island state lawmaker who once criticized the state Legislature by invoking the image of pot-smoking immigrants denies a DUI charge he received after being arrested for alleged marijuana possession, The Providence Journal reports.

House Minority Leader Robert Watson was arrested Friday at a police checkpoint in East Haven, Conn.

The Journal says the police report alleged that the Republican lawmaker's eyes were "extremely glassy and bloodshot" and that he smelled of alcoholic beverages as well as the "distinct odor of marijuana."

In a statement, Watson "vehemently" denies the DUI charge.

The police report said the officer found a "small plastic sandwich bag containing a green leafy plant-like substance and a small wooden marijuana smoking pipe" on Watson after his arrest.

For those of you who can get over to La Jolla tomorrow, one of the world's foremost physical anthropologists is giving a lecture open to the public:

Paleoanthropologist Tim White will discuss latest discoveries in human evolution, the analysis of the data and its meaning

In the article White answers an important question very clearly:

Q: You’ve written that Charles Darwin “creatively but incorrectly hypothesized that our earliest ancestors would appear to be a halfway house between chimpanzee and human.” In what ways was he wrong?

A: Actually, Darwin was more right about this than many of his contemporaries and intellectual descendants, because he appreciated so well that it was a dangerous game to use living animals as proxies for ancient ones. It turns out that many things that separate chimpanzees from humans arose along the chimpanzee line AFTER the fork in the evolutionary road. They are highly specialized, frugivorous, knuckle-walking apes with social systems highly evolved from the common ancestor we shared with them at the time of the fork.

Ha! Found this...

Fox concludes Larry Flynt's 'Palin porno' is legal (VIDEO)

Publisher Larry Flynt has announced that Hustler is releasing a porn film featuring a Sarah Palin lookalike and a tank full of stranded Russian soldiers.

Fox's Megyn Kelly was immediately sure that "your average American -- it's offensive, it's disgusting it's dirty -- they wouldn't want to see it." But her real question was, "Is this whole thing actually legal?"

In a consideration of that question on Monday, Kelly turned first to defense attorney David Wohl, who suggested that, although Palin would be best advised to ignore the film, she might "seek a preliminary injunction at least preventing its release before the election."

Wohl acknowledged that the 1988 case of Hustler v. Jerry Falwell had established that celebrities have no rights to sue when it comes to parody, but he asserted that if the film could be viewed as "a political hit piece," Palin might have "a good cause for action.

...

"Whatever you think of Larry Flynt, the man knows his First Amendment," Kelly concluded.

There's a reason she said that. I already pointed it out. News Corp is partnered with DirecTV which carries HustlerTV.

But then comes Holy Week. The triumph of Palm Sunday. The humility of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. His slow march up that hill, and the pain and the scorn and the shame of the cross.

And we’re reminded that in that moment, he took on the sins of the world -- past, present and future -- and he extended to us that unfathomable gift of grace and salvation through his death and resurrection.

In the words of the book Isaiah: “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

This magnificent grace, this expansive grace, this “Amazing Grace” calls me to reflect. And it calls me to pray. It calls me to ask God for forgiveness for the times that I’ve not shown grace to others, those times that I’ve fallen short. It calls me to praise God for the gift of our son -- his Son and our Savior.

And that’s why we have this breakfast. Because in the middle of critical national debates, in the middle of our busy lives, we must always make sure that we are keeping things in perspective. Children help do that. (Laughter.) A strong spouse helps do that. But nothing beats scripture and the reminder of the eternal.

So I’m honored that all of you have come here this Holy Week to join me in a spirit of prayer, and I pray that our time here this morning will strengthen us, both individually as believers and as Americans. And with that, let me introduce my good friend, Bishop Vashti McKenzie, for our opening prayer. (Applause.)

Last known Easter Message from GWB on March 24, 2005...

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

I send greetings to all those celebrating Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice and triumph over death, Christ lifted the sights of humanity forever. In His teachings, the poor have heard hope, the proud have been challenged, and the weak and dying have found assurance. Today, the words of Jesus continue to comfort and strengthen Christians around the world.

During this holy season, we thank God for His blessings and ask for His wisdom and guidance. We also keep in our thoughts and prayers the men and women of our Armed Forces -- especially those far from home, separated from family and friends by the call of duty. May the joy of Easter fill our hearts with gratitude for our freedom, love for our neighbors, and hope for peace.

Laura and I wish you a Happy Easter.

It's a religious world out there:

Poll: Belief in supreme being strong across globe

Belief in a god, or a supreme being, and some sort of afterlife is strong in many countries around the globe, according to a new Ipsos/Reuters poll.

Fifty-one percent of the 18,829 people across 23 countries who took part in the survey said they were convinced there is an afterlife and a divine entity, while 18 percent said they don't believe in a god and 17 percent weren't sure.

And...

But only 28 percent believe in creationism, the belief that a god created humans, compared to 41 percent who believe in human evolution and 31 percent who simply don't know what to believe.

Pretty weird way to phrase things, and probably misleading. Anyway, it is clear the US is more creationist than the average of the 23 nations sampled.

Furthermore:

[...] Indonesia, Turkey and Brazil had the highest proportion of people with a definitive belief in a god, or supreme being, while 24 percent of residents of India, 14 percent of Chinese and 10 percent of Russians were most likely to believe in many gods.

Polytheism - still hanging around after all these millennia.

Although half of the people questioned in the poll think there is something after death, nearly a quarter do not believe it will be a heaven or hell.

Seven percent think "you are ultimately reincarnated" and two percent believe in the concept of heaven but not hell.

Wow, I would have thought the latter to be a bit more popular, if all the Hollywood visions of universalism (i.e., life after death is a positive experience) were to be believed.

Believers in creationism were strongest in South Africa, followed by the United States, Indonesia, South Korea and Brazil.

Residents of Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United States participated in the survey.

The US, South Africa, South Korea, and Brazil all have very energetic evangelical/fundamentalist Christian movements. Indonesia has a broad and dominant (if somewhat eclectic) Muslim education system layered on top of the indigenous societies.

The NCSE breaks down the data a bit more clearly:

The "evolutionist" view was most popular in Sweden (68%), Germany (65%), and China (64%), with the United States ranking 18th (28%), between Mexico (34%) and Russia (26%); the "creationist" view was most popular in Saudi Arabia (75%), Turkey (60%), and Indonesia (57%), with the United States ranking 6th (40%), between Brazil (47%) and Russia (34%).

I suspect James Dobson and Michelle Bachmann would rather the US was more like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Indonesia.

Yep, they just loved him while he was in office, irregardless of starting two wars* (one of which had no valid reason for military action), the profligate spending, the patriot act, and the militaristic chest thumping in general.

They absolutely loved him and never said one word about the expansion of government in general and very little about the hugh increase in federal spending. Until the real estate bubble burst that is and took the entire economy with it, now they have disowned him.

Funny how they can stay within their own little bubble of chosen reality and manufacture their own facts as needed. But then again Donald Trump's recent speeches actually blamed Obama for starting costly wars overseas and the same idiots ate it up and seem to love him now.
