Not sure. I know at least one of Microsoft's flight sims eventually got the 219 as a flyable aircraft, mostly because it was the only prop-driven Luftwaffe aircraft that was capable of reliably intercepting the Mosquito. Goering's dislike of Heinkel kept it from being given production priority, though, luckily for the RAF.

Back around 2003, people finally took a really close look at the "Flyer" and modeled it in MS Flight Sim. I doubt there is anything remotely as nasty to fly that has been successful since. Yet, they managed because they built off of the gliders they'd built. It was how they expected a plane to fly. We've learned much better since then ...

Our America, 9 October 2012:
Kachur: Faith needed on evolution
Accepting evolution requires faith
Rep. Paul Broun, the Republican representing northeast Georgia in Congress, is being excoriated for his Christian beliefs, as we see from recent letters to the editor, in addition to TV and radio reports, on his recent speech calling evolution and other aspects of science “lies straight from the pit of hell.”
Christians and Jews alike [oh, really?] are anticipating the appearance of the Messiah. We just don’t agree whether it will be the first or second arrival. We both read the Torah, or Old Testament, which tells of how God created this world and all in it. If we didn’t believe it to be true, we could save a lot of time and money by not attending temple or church, and not putting money into the collection plate. [finally, someone gets to the point.]
If the story of creation is not true, how can we believe any part of the Scriptures? If you know that someone habitually stretches the truth, do you believe anything he says?
The statistical odds against evolution being the beginning of all life on this earth, with all its varieties, are staggering. It takes a lot more faith — yes, faith — to believe in evolution rather than intelligent design.
Truth is not hard to find if you honestly seek it.
Clifford Kachur
So there.

I think it can be stated with a high level of certainty that the P-38 would have seen a high-altitude performance improvement with the Merlin. Basically nothing with the Allison did well high over Europe; nothing with the Merlin did badly.

Not too impressed with the Japanese stuff. They went down the wrong design path IMO. While the Zero was outstanding in certain ways, it also had some serious weaknesses. And their later designs never got over development bugs and issues with designing larger engines.
And for the Luftwaffe I am essentially a FW-190 fan. And I think the FW-189 is neat as well. :)

Tom Levenson over at Cole's place lays the smack down on Josh Romney:
The President of the United States—the one who steered the country through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the one who passed the most significant health care reform in two generations, the one who saved the auto industry (in which your own family once took pride, as I recall), the one who steered a very delicate course that ended with the fall of more than one dictator and the transformation of autocratic Arab regimes into something much closer to one their own people recognize as legitimate, the guy who got Bin Laden and all the rest—that great American is to you “an obstinate child.”
Really?
Oh—and I forgot to mention. That president, our president, your president, like it or not, happens to be the first African-American to hold that office, which among many other things means he has to deal with a level of identity pressure unlike anything a born-rich, never-has-to-wonder-about-your-children’s-children’s-material-well-being guy like yourself. And with all of that you’re going to call that man “an obstinate child.” Just a brat arguing with Daddy-knows-best at the dinner table. A servant, perhaps, a member of the lower orders, who should, by rights, know his place?
As I said, the word you are looking for is “boy.” Really, you just said it.

Another little-known WWII aircraft, the Piaggio P.108. The Soviet Union was indeed lucky that these 4 engine heavy bombers were kept in the Mediterranean theater: Had they been sent to the Eastern Front instead, the Tankograd plant at Chelabinsk would have been within their range. Had such bombers disrupted T-34 production there, Zhukov might never have been able to amass enough armor for his Operation: Saturn and Operation: Uranus counterattacks in late 1942 that trapped the German 6th Army at Stalingrad.

Problem with the Japanese is the same as the problem with the Germans: They didn't have the equipment or chemicals on hand to produce the sort of high-octane avgas that the Allies could. They were stuck with lower octane fuel, which necessitated larger engines that put greater stress on then existing materials science. Likewise, the Japanese relied primarily on radial engines due to their reliability, something very important when you're an island nation surrounded by hundreds of miles of ocean all around it.

This presumes the could have gotten there. I'd have to rate that as about ... oh, I dunno, Highly un-fucking-likely? While it's true they built a decent bomber with good range, it couldn't have survived without escort - we couldn't have without resources far deeper than every other nation in WWII combined and the B-17 (for all it's very real flaws) did have by far the best on board protection of any pre-war bomber - the losses would have ended their attempts within a month.

That would have been hard for the Soviets to do: Their interceptors were best at low-levels, and the P-108 could fly high enough as to give the BF-109 greater strength against them. And even in that, the P-108 would have done a service: every fighter and 85mm AA gun it kept positioned east of the Urals would have been one unable to protect the Red Army's tanks from FW-190 fighter-bombers and JU-87 Stukas.

The reason I want the Dems to point this out is that I think Mitt is in a zero sum game when it comes to adding voters now. If he wants to abandon the far right to posture more to the center, then the Dems need to point that out so it deflates some of his support from the far right. They are already suspicious of his credentials, if they start to see more proof that Mitt and the GOP establishment played them to derail Rick Santorum or Ron Paul, Mitt could lose votes not through conversion but apathy.
This sort of thing happened to Sarkozy in France, he attracted the far right to help him win, but in the end, they the far right sniffed him out as a too much of a centrist and they pulled the chair out from under him on election day.
So if Mitt wants to move to the center at the last minute, make sure the Paulbots and creationists and supremacists he's been courting all know..

What alerted agents to check his suitcase? It might have been the bullet-proof vest or the flame-retardant pants that he was wearing under his trench coat.
According to ICE, a search of his checked bag turned up the smoke grenade as well as "three leather-coated billy clubs, a collapsible baton, a full-face respirator, various knives, a hatchet, body bags, a biohazard suit, handcuffs, leg irons, and a device to repel dogs."

"Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" elimination: Bristol rolls as two go home
Yup, tea partying America kept low scoring (of the previous night and the season) in while two former champs were bumped.
Watching the performances last night I find it surprising that Helio was sent packing, as he is a very natural dancer and overall it was a great performance up to the point of one mishap, and indeed the judges scored it highly even with the boo-boo.
But, ABC picked Bristol to be on this season for a reason. Now, I don't want to lay at Bristol's feet all the idiocies of her parents (though she seems to be embracing those things now that her rebellion (her pregnancy) is past), and she has come quite far (in regards to dancing and performing) since she began, but it is clear from watching the performances that she is just not in the same league as the others.
However, DWTS is not a dance competition but a popularity contest.
Bristol's mother has been at the show every week, and ABC makes sure to put shots of her on the screen, or position Tom Bergeron in front of her when they have him speaking.
Bristol is the "heel" (aka antagonist) of the show, since the judges have abandoned that role (none of them are very critical.) She also gets the mysterious packages, death threats, etc. So ABC gets a two-fer with Bristol - a heel, and a sympathetic character - and that is difficult to do in say a real drama written for TV.
Anyway, this is America.

Tonight I watched the first episode of "666 Park Avenue", and while it has its pluses as far as a "horror" genre TV show, the chief male protagonist is presented as particularly clueless for being a lawyer, and his live-in girlfriend (the main character) is presented very inconsistently.

DNA dating study kills off Jurassic Park
Reconstructing dinosaurs from ancient DNA has been dealt a blow with a new study finding genetic material can only last 1 million years.
An international team of researchers reached the finding after analysing DNA extracted from bones of the extinct New Zealand moa.
They found that while short fragments of DNA could possibly survive up to 1 million years, sequences of 30 base pairs or more would only have a half-life of around 158,000 years under certain conditions.
Lead author Dr Morten Allentoft from Murdoch University's Ancient DNA lab in Perth says their results contradict earlier studies which claimed to have extracted DNA fragments several hundred base pairs long from dinosaur bones and preserved insects, claims which underpinned the storyline of the 1993 movie Jurassic Park.
"What we show here with the decay rate of DNA is that this is never going to be possible," Dr Allentoft said.
"It may be that you can have extremely short fragments of DNA, only a few base pairs that persist for maybe a million years, maybe even longer."
Dr Allentoft says the earlier findings may have been due to contamination with human DNA.

Well, the real buzzkill is that any dinosaurs we might possibly be able to clone would have no resistance against the diseases and parasites that have evolved over the past 60 million years.
We have seen in the case of smallpox in human or rinderpest in cattle what can happen when popuations are suddenly exposed to viruses and bacteria after even a few thousand years.
Our Jurassic Park specimens would probably take one deep breath and keel over on the spot from some pathogen to which modern species have already developed an immunity.

I was most impressed by the way he both defended and distanced himself from Romneycare in the debates: He pointed out that Romneycare was a "bipartisan effort", whereas Obamacare was "rammed down Congress' throat" without bipartisan support.
WTF?
Yeah, well it's easy to be "bipartisan" when you're the Republican and you're dealing with Democrats who want to get shit done.
Quite different when it's the other way around.

According to Ellefsen, Romney introduced himself to Doherty four separate times during the gathering.
"He said it was very comical," Ellefsen said, "Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale."
Ellefsen said Doherty remembered Romney as robotic.
"He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen's face."

Panetta: US sends forces to Jordan in case of Syrian escalation
BRUSSELS — The United States has sent military troops to the Jordan-Syria border to help build a headquarters in Jordan and bolster that country’s military capabilities in the event that violence escalates along its border with Syria, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday.
Speaking at a NATO conference of defense ministers in Brussels, Panetta said the U.S. has been working with Jordan to monitor chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria and also to help Jordan deal with refugees pouring over the border from Syria.
But the revelation of U.S. military personnel so close to the 19-month-old Syrian conflict suggests an escalation in the U.S. military involvement in the conflict, even as Washington pushes back on any suggestion of a direct intervention in Syria.
It also follows several days of shelling between Turkey and Syria, an indication that the civil war could spill across Syria’s borders and become a regional conflict.
“We have a group of our forces there working to help build a headquarters there and to insure that we make the relationship between the United States and Jordan a strong one so that we can deal with all the possible consequences of what’s happening in Syria,” Panetta said.

Very dangerous times in Paris. Thankfully they busted these guys before they attacked.
French Police Find Explosives While Investigating Islamist Suspects
PARIS (Reuters) - French authorities said on Wednesday they had rooted out an "extremely dangerous terror network" after uncovering weapons and bomb-making materials in their investigation of suspected radical Islamists detained at the weekend.
Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said a dozen people arrested on Saturday would be held for a further 24 hours after chemicals used to make explosives were found at a garage in the Paris suburbs belonging to one of them.
The raids were triggered by a grenade attack on a kosher grocery store outside Paris last month, and have further unsettled Europe's largest Jewish community, which was shaken when an al Qaeda-inspired gunman shot dead three Jewish children and a rabbi in Toulouse in March.

What did this guy expect would happen when bringing stuff like this to the airport?
Found in suitcase at LAX: Smoke grenade, billy clubs, hatchet, body bags, leg irons ...
A Massachusetts man has been charged with illegally transporting a smoke grenade in his checked suitcase while returning from a trip to Japan.
Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Yongda Huang Harris, 28, a naturalized U.S. citizen of Chinese descent, Friday in Los Angeles. He was flying from Japan, through South Korea and then Los Angeles, on his way to Boston.
But he did make it pretty far before getting caught.
...Court documents say his trip originated in Kansai, Japan, stopped over in Inchon, Korea, and then in Los Angeles on his way to Boston. A federal official says the Japan to Korea flight was not on a U.S. carrier.

How did “I love Big Bird” turn into “kill Big Bird”? Only through a spin machine going on hyper drive.
Romney may have been off base in suggesting PBS funding has much to do with the deficit, but that’s no excuse for the Obama campaign to declare that means the demise of a popular children’s character. According to the financials of Sesame Workshop, Big Bird should do just fine, with or without public funding.

Activist: Pro-Palestinian boat en route to Gaza
An activist says a boat of pro-Palestinian advocates from eight countries is en route to Gaza in the latest attempt to break Israel's naval blockade.
Dror Feiler, an Israeli activist on board, says the boat left Naples on Sunday and aims to reach Gaza in mid-October. He said Monday the boat is carrying items such as cement, basketballs, musical instruments and theater lighting equipment.
Hamas greeted the news with fireworks...
The Israel Air Force activity followed the firing of over 40 rockets at Israel this week
Israeli Air Force (IAF) aircraft targeted a terror tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip overnight. Direct hits were confirmed.
The targeting is in response to over 40 rockets that were fired at Israel this week, with seven of them fired in the past 24 hours.

One thing that KT and the Mitt Defenders are missing on this whole Big Bird brouhaha is that if PBS went away tomorrow, Sesame Street would indeed survive, even in syndication or on one of the commercial kids' channels, simply because it's been on the air for over 40 years and has significant mindshare worldwide. It's the other shows that run on PBS stations that aren't as well-known or well-established that would likely get the ax; not only that, the stations themselves across the nation would have to find a way to get the money formerly disbursed by the feds (about $500,000,000 a year, IIRC), go commercial, or go dark.
I'll give you that the "Mitt wants to fire Big Bird" meme, strictly speaking, is political grandstanding by the Obama campaign, but when one takes a gander at the comments that Mitt himself made about PBS during the first debate, it's nothing but bad news for public television.

You know, I get that you think Big Bird is being used to deflect attention away from a bad debate.
But here's the question: Who wouldn't?
The fact remains, however, that Mitt Romney's lying ass used Big Bird as a set of shiny keys to distract from the fact that his economic policies, at least the ones we know about, are detrimental to the middle class.
Not only that, but he was serving up PBS as red meat to his base.

Obama's debate performance. How Twitter has done us wrong...
FTA:
Not surprisingly, like many people who gravitate toward long-form writing, Obama’s strengths don’t translate very well to the world of debate, or at least the kind of debate that our new journalistic culture of instantaneous opinion values so highly. For one thing, when he speaks extemporaneously, he pauses frequently and often says “uh.” That sound drove journalists nuts during the debate last week; but where many of my colleagues heard lack of preparation, I heard the tic of a writer wanting to self-edit, trying to buy himself the time to carefully measure his words.

There are ways to confront that in debate/argument/public speaking. You have to work on it to eliminate verbal tics that can be distracting.
However, some of the better public speakers out there still have verbal tics - such as repeating words or inserting ums, uhs, like, if, etc.
Public speaking, like other things, is something you have to work at to perfect, especially when engaging in extemporaneous speaking.

once again, peole are obsessing over big bird when the point of the ad was something different entirely: Romney wants to finance billion-dollar tax cuts for greedy bastards by cutting relatively insignificant programs that benefit a lot of people.
That is called nuance, and it is a dying art these days.
But the fact checkers! Romney doesn't really want to fire Big Bird!
Seriously. Folks are so hung up on Big Bird that they miss the larger point being made by the Obama campaign. Mitt Romney is a liar and a hypocrite who wants to cut insignificant government funding that actually does a public service and provides a public good while he turns around and throws money at defense and other larger programs like it's going out of style.

The folks who allowed Sandusky to prey and molest for so long were the ones running the football program.

The point of the Sesame Street ads and Big Bird talk is Romney has tried to make the argument that programs like PBS are what have made the debt what it is. And that's patently false. We had PBS in the prosperous times of the 1990's. Obama's made the point many a time on the stump that Romney sees PBS as the problem more so than Wall Street. If people don't want to hear that, that's their own problem. And I don't blame Sesame for being upset about the ads. At the same time, however, I think it's perfectly reasonable to ridicule Romney for what he said and continues to say.

The problem is that Detroit does have the tax base to support such an effort, and the rest of the state won't finance the effort unless an agency outside the control of the city government has oversight over the money. Detroit rejects that sort of arrangement. Thus, nothing is being done.

And that's a tacit admission that government spending creates jobs. Mind you, we're talking about the kinds of jobs that GOPers prefer (military contractors) over those that Democrats generally prefer, but when those jobs include factory workers/manufacturing in their districts, they're going to fight to extend the spending to preserve those jobs rather than see those facilities idled.
If that $180 million spending could create those X numbers of jobs, what could a significant portion more do when addressing construction of new modern infrastructure or rehab/overhaul of existing infrastructure. And at the other side, everyone needs to work on getting the costs of such construction down so that it is comparable to European or Japanese construction for the same kind/level of engineering. There's no reason that comparable projects in the US cost more than those elsewhere in the world. And it's not as though we can't get projects done in a reasonable time and at a reasonable cost. It's just the exception - not the rule.

re: #369 NJDhockeyfan
As I've repeatedly pointed out in comments here, the major terror groups, such as Hamas and PLO have had splinter groups that engage in ever more violent attacks because the core group has been more willing to engage in the status quo. Also, there's cross-pollination between groups, creating new terror groups like the PRCs, which combine terrorists formerly of Hamas and Fatah. That includes current and/or former members of the al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and PFLP.
But this coordination means that if/when Israel strikes back, it will be along the lines of an Operation Cast Lead, and not merely at the groups carrying out the launches. Hamas nominally governs Gaza, and is therefore going to be held responsible. By loosely allowing groups like PIJ to occasionally fire off rockets/mortars at Israel, Hamas can retain its triangle offense against Israel - plausible deniability that they weren't involved in the attacks and spare their core group from direct attacks.
Their tacit involvement in these rounds of attacks eliminates a key factor in their triangle offense system of attacking Israel, and makes it easier for Israel to sign off on military action against Hamas and its core leadership, as well as those directly involved in the attacks/launches.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Hamas could be acting at the behest of Iran to try and take the pressure off Assad, but there's signs of fractures among Hamas leaders inside and outside Syria over Assad's ongoing brutalization of the Syrian people. That makes that particular scenario more remote.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) has spent the week appearing on news programs promoting Wednesday’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing to investigate a possible cover-up of lax security in Benghazi that led to the death of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and other Americans.
“The heart of what I’m concerned about in this situation is there was a conscious decision: Politics were driving the decisions rather than security,” Chaffetz recently told The Hill.
During his multiple appearances on CNN and Fox News, Chaffetz used the same line of attack and met little resistance. That is, until he faced off with O’Brien on Wednesday.
“So where there are complaints that, in fact, that there was not enough security, you’ve just said ‘absolutely’ that you cut — that you were the one to vote against, to increase security for the State Department, which would lead directly to Benghazi,” O’Brien told Chaffetz. “It seems like you are saying you have a hand in the responsibility for this? Right? The funding of the security, you’re happy to cut it.”
“You have to prioritize things,” Chaffetz insisted. “Libya before 9/11, two bombings on our consulate out there. Of course, that’s got to be a higher priority than making sure that we’re protecting some other interest.”

Detroit & Public Act 4
FTA:
State intervention should come in the form of consultation and assistance, not takeover, said Greg Bowens, spokesman for the group Stand Up for Democracy, which headed the petition drive to put the issue before voters.
Bowens said the new law was designed to place the burden of addressing a financial crisis on public employees like teachers, police officers and firefighters, rather than asking for shared sacrifice, especially from those who hold municipal debt. Unmanageable debt is the single biggest contributor to the financial crises in local government, Bowens said, but lenders and bondholders have little incentive to restructure debt when they believe an emergency manager will balance the books through employee concessions.

So, doesn't this by definition mean he was most likely cycling against other dopers? In other words, he won on a (so to speak) level playing field?
The more I look the more I become convinced the whole thing is simply French rage that an American dominated "their" sport.

Detroit...
Detroit & Public Act 4FTA:
State intervention should come in the form of consultation and assistance, not takeover, said Greg Bowens, spokesman for the group Stand Up for Democracy, which headed the petition drive to put the issue before voters.Bowens said the new law was designed to place the burden of addressing a financial crisis on public employees like teachers, police officers and firefighters, rather than asking for shared sacrifice, especially from those who hold municipal debt. Unmanageable debt is the single biggest contributor to the financial crises in local government, Bowens said, but lenders and bondholders have little incentive to restructure debt when they believe an emergency manager will balance the books through employee concessions.
I disagree. given Detroit's history of corrupt and incompetent government, takeover is the best option. Michigan doesn't have a lot of spare money, and can't afford to have monies put into Detroit wasted.

Shouldn't be a priority for HIM. It should have been for Obama. See Obama should have just sent money to the embassies and said fuck the lawmakers decision. Since he didn't he is responsible, and of course if he had done that then he should be impeached for over stepping his authority. Chrystal clear, a classic no win situation. Fuck that asshole.
That's pretty much how I feel reading any GOPer in the House. Damned if Obama does, damned if he doesn't because he's a damn commie. Not that one.
Not that either. You have a different definition?
Also from urban dictionary:
Concern Troll
In an argument (usually a political debate), a concern troll is someone who is on one side of the discussion, but pretends to be a supporter of the other side with "concerns". The idea behind this is that your opponents will take your arguments more seriously if they think you're an ally. Concern trolls who use fake identities are sometimes known as sockpuppets.
I've never liked the concern troll label, too easy to just dismiss someone you don't agree with by saying they are a concern troll, but take it for what it's worth.

Killed former SEAL used in stump speech thought Romney was ‘pathetic’: friend
The friend of a former Navy SEAL who was recently killed during attacks in Libya says that his friend “would definitely not approve” of Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney invoking his name to score political points.
Over the past week, Romney has been recalling a chance meeting with former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty years ago to get an edge on President Barack Obama after attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi that resulted in the death of the veteran, U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and other Americans.
The former Massachusetts governor appeared to get choked up on Tuesday as he told a crowd in Iowa that he had met Doherty when he mistakenly attended the wrong neighborhood party.

I don't see anything in there that necessarily says republican. He is likely racist or at the very least extraordinarily tone deaf, and he doesn't like the ACA.
I am not crazy about the ACA and disagree with a lot of Obama's economic, regulatory, and tax policies, but would never consider myself republican. I am pro-choice, support gay marriage and am a huge supporter of science(you know, evolution, climate change etc.)

That photoshop has an infamous history on LGF. When Charles first posted criticizing it back in 2009, then-lizard Iron Fist mounted a spirited but nonsensical defense of the photoshop. His lack of sense in so doing and his refusal to admit the image's racist nature got him banned by Charles. IF promptly reacted by joining Rodan (AKA Daedalus AKA Dorkus) on The Blogmocrasy (known here as the Stalker Blog). The admiration felt by some then on LGF for Iron Fist served as the catalyst for what is today called The Great Flouncing.

He's a dangerous man to cross politically. Most Republicans who have done so have subsequently lost their next primary, since he than supports a primary challenge against said "offender".
He's a fool, pure and simple. And it speaks volumes to idiocy and spinelessness of the Republican Party that they would kowtow to this idiot.
Although you do have one point: there are enough conservatives who are stupid enough to believe anything Norquist says to make re-election tough. I still think it's just going to take one Republican with a grip on reality to push back. Grover's fantasy world may be more fragile than people realize.

I do blame the criminals first, but the unions need to accept that in light of the threat of state monies being stolen, as has happened in the past, the state needs to have an agency outside the city government manage the funds. I understand that's humiliating for Detroit, but given the circumstances that sort of raw deal is the only deal the state can afford.

Really that guys like him and Limbaugh have the influence they do on conservatism and the Republican Party is sad as shit. Norquist is just a nutcase who doesn't like paying his taxes. News to Grover, no one really likes it. It would be nice to see someone in the Republican party tell him to screw off. Of course, the sad part is there are people who think Norquist is an agent of the Muslim Brotherhood because of his Muslim wife which is hilariously insane.

“I mean, lied about what?” [Anne] Romney said to host Martha MacCallum. “This is something he’s been saying all along. This is what he believes. This is his policy, these are his statements. I mean, lie, it’s sort of like someone that’s, you know, in the sandbox that like lost the game and they’re just going to kick sand in someone’s face and say, ‘you liar.’ I mean, it’s like they lost, and so now they just are going to say, okay, the game, we didn’t like the game.
this is the first example i know of a presidential candidate having a Trained Attack Wife
"I mean, lied about what?"
to coin a phrase, "i'm so glad you asked that question"

I'm afraid I have to hesitate in accepting that given your history of being so totally against unions in the past.
And after a bit of thought I still have to do so. The criminals were robbing from the unions (too), and the unions among others complained. It appears the outside agency has decided that busting the union is the most important step in solving the city's fiscal issues, so they're complaining and trying to do something about it.

Slain SEAL’s mom no Romney fan
"...In recent days, Romney had told the story of how he met Glen Doherty at a Christmas party in California as part of his stump speech, and used the story of Doherty’s death — he rushed toward the facility to defend it when he heard about the attack — to illustrate American bravery.
....
Meanwhile, a friend of Doherty’s told a Seattle radio station Doherty remembered Romney repeatedly introducing himself at the Christmas party.“He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen’s face.”

The mistake H.W Bush made was the stupid "no new taxes" pledge which from what I understand was reluctantly stated and inserted by a speechwriter- forget who.

re: #484 Eventual Carrion
Say what you want about Occupy, but the Atlanta group has gone to bat for not only several home owners, but a church too. To stop foreclosures and get the banks to work with the homeowners and the church they helped. They haven't succeeded every time, but they have been trying to bring attention to the foreclosure problem. You'd think the banks would rather have the home occupied and kept up than to go into foreclosure and sit empty. An empty house is going to be vandalized or at least go to hell and whole neighborhoods experience a drop in home values. Why not work with the homeowner? It's stupid from a business angle.
