Rep. Gohmert Drops Health Coverage, Blames Obamacare

Louis ain’t paying no $600 per month for health care. He can’t afford it, I guess.
Wingnuts • Views: 25,097

Lots of conservative lawmakers hate Obamacare. Rep. Louie Gohmert is putting his money where his mouth is.

The Tyler Republican gave up his health insurance for 2014, asserting that the president’s signature health care law, the Affordable Care Act, has made coverage too expensive.

“Other people are going to see what I did when I looked into health insurance for my wife and me: that the deductible rate, it doubled, about $3,000 to $6,000, and our policy was going to go from about $300 to about $1,500 a month,” he said during a recent radio interview with Trey Graham, a pastor at First Melissa Baptist Church in Collin County. “I actually don’t have insurance right now, so thank you very much, Obamacare.”

Gohmert’s salary as a member of Congress is $174,000 a year. And his calculations ignore the hefty employer subsidy for which he is eligible — almost $950 per month. He says he will pay the tax that takes effect this year for those without insurance — 1 percent of his annual income.

Health care experts say Gohmert is taking a big risk. He’s 60. His wife, Kathy Gohmert, is 59. At that stage of life, medical expenses are common and unpredictable.

[…]

But for months, he’s said he would rather give up his government-supplied insurance than accept any government subsidy. If he did take the subsidy available to federal lawmakers and their aides, he would probably pay a monthly premium of about $600 — far less than the figure he cited on Graham’s show, which aired Sunday.

Dude you make six figures and get a cushy pension. I don’t want to hear your crap that you can’t afford health care under ACA. Fucking coward.

Louis does get free outpatient treatment at Walter Reed - Socialism! - and I’m sure if he really, really, really ended up with a huge medical bill his pals in Texas would help him out.

I wish that asshole if he hates the government as much as he claims to would just resign his seat and leave it someone who actually realizes that government isn’t the eviliest thing in ever.

Louis started the new year by planning a coup against the Speaker and the rest of the RINOs, using Blutto’s speech in Animal House as a rallying cry.

I know this is all true, because I read it on Breitbart, and you can too.

So he didn’t mind the subsidy until now, I guess.

6 ericblair  Tue, Jan 21, 2014 8:01:40pm

I guess he’s stupid enough to have actually gone ahead and not gotten insurance, instead of just lie about it like any normal gooper. Besides the fact that it doesn’t make any sense anyways: he’s taking his gummint salary, but he’s not accepting a health insurance subsidy from his employer like offered in any normal management position that anyone’s ever heard of.

Better watch those icy steps tomorrow, asshole. Maybe I’m a very bad man, but I would laugh my ass off.

OT

Watching PBS bio of J D Salinger’s life; European Theater D Day landing to liberation of concentration camp.
Never knew that.

Upon watching the segment and public reaction to Catcher In The Rye - seems I may be one of those who was never alienated enough to relate to Holden Caulfield.

As for Salinger subsequently moving away from the popular literary crowd to New Hampshire, that may have inadvertently saved him from a Mark David Chapman.

I assume that Gohmert and his wife have some rich and powerful friends in Texas. He is, after all, a Congressman.

Still, they may be overestimating the willingness of these friends to foot the bill, depending on the situation. I read that in his last years, Senator Ted Kennedy sought out a very highly-regarded brain surgeon. If Gohmert or his wife are faced with illness, and are motivated to find the best doctors they possibly can, will his friends support him all the way? Or will they not-so-subtly steer him to a doctor friend of theirs in Texas?

It’s funny, but for a member of a political party that preaches (screeches) about self-reliance, Gohmert and his wife are risking being dependent on the kindness of strangers.

Sigh…on an article about the number of Mosques increasing by “74 percent since 2000”…

Phyllis Murphy · Top Commenter · University of Illinois-Springfield

American government should gather up Muslims and put them in camps or send them back home until their loyalties can be separated out..Democratic President Roosevelt rounded up all Japanese Americans in the country and incarcerated them the duration of WWll except for a number who volunteered too join military and fight for freedom of Americans and America. Innocents kept caught up in the ugliness of the demonic Jihadist types like Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Chavez and those brain miniatures want slaves made of their populations while they live as royalty….Kind of like Obama!

USA Today News Comments…

I’m surprised, almost the entire thread is nothing but a hate orgy directed at Muslims. The few people who tried to inject some rationality were all shouted down often with some pretty vile insults. I guess all the site moderators must be on vacation or something (or were just too scared to challenge the lynch mob).

Articles on mosques require fierce moderation or their comment threads should be closed. Otherwise the comments quickly turn into a hate-sewer.

Gohmert-related!
Jan. 2011:

This week, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) joined the growing chorus of Republicans clamoring for hearings to look into the threat of “creeping Sharia law.” Appearing on Frank Gaffney’s radio show (Gaffney is of course the chief architect of the “creeping Sharia” threat), Gohmert told the host he hoped they would “have some hearings” and that he would “be pushing for them”

When you’re looking for the other person to share your life with, lists seem helpful.

They frequently aren’t.

I can pretty much guarantee I would have had “close in age” on my list.

My husband is 17 years older than me.

Focus on being the you you want to be, and the person who wants to spend their life with that you will be much more likely to find you.

And they hate that.

And they will pour that hate out on any target.

Especially the other.

Doubly especially when the other is a form of magickal-thinking product which will compete in the magick-thinking market.

There is a paragraph from Gail Sheehy’s Passages that to me seems to point out a flaw that most of us have when we try to pursue happiness:

Would that there were an award for people who come to understand the concept of enough. Good enough. Successful enough. Thin enough. Rich enough. Socially responsible enough. When you have self-respect you have enough, and when you have enough, you have self-respect.

But it’s not your only dream, because there are parts of yourself that you aren’t willing to compromise to achieve this, like your faith.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. But it does mean that there are other parts of your life that are important to you. Pursue some of them. Become more immersed in that. Start looking into travel, even if it’s not the primary dream - it’ll be a lot harder to travel once there are small children involved.

These are things that will help move you closer to that dream, even if it doesn’t seem obvious.

I can’t wait for the fact check. If he was actually getting a good policy at the rates he quoted, he was “taking” from younger people in his workplace.

What insurance company would estimate his (max) cost at $4k/yr (after admin/tax/profit)? None, obviously and evidently. If he could find a similar non-exchange policy in the indie market that’s cheaper, he might have a gripe about the exchanges. But at his age he’s a de facto pre-existing condition consumer, with stent or hip-replacement or cancer treatment - something big- likely in the next five years that greatly exceeds his former policy’s aggregate premium+deductible. No bullshit conservative plan will ever change that. To the insurance companies he’s $12k revenue, $2k gross profit, $800 per-tax profit. It’s that simple

Checked outside temperature: we have achieved -1F. Indoors is around 50F (except, apparently, where the bathroom plumbing is located).
So, looks like I’ll just stay up until the sun and outdoor temperature rise (supposed high today will be a balmy 17F).

I’m a 72 yr old woman. Does that also mean I can have a 43 yr old man? That’s a 29 yr age difference, certainly nothing most women would entertain because we tend to want partners who are at least as mature as we are, a more equal relationship; once you get out of a certain range, it seems ridiculous. I don’t want some younger man having to take care of me in my dotage, either. He would probably look elsewhere for companionship, if you know what I mean, and he wouldn’t be blamed for that, would he? On it’s face, it seems absurd, because I have sons who are older than 43. Why wouldn’t a man think that about a woman being that much younger? Is it because men are generally just thinking about themselves, after all?

Oh, wait. That rule is just for men, after all, too, isn’t it? Never mind.

In response to actions taken against protestors on the Maidan in November and December of last year, the U.S. Embassy has revoked the visas of several Ukrainians who were linked to the violence. Because visa records are confidential under U.S. law, we cannot comment on individual cases. We would like to underscore that the Department of State has broad authority to revoke visas based on information indicating that a visa holder may be inadmissible to the United States, and we are considering further action against those responsible for the current violence.

re: #36 Justanotherhuman

I had a somewhat similar discussion (the polite term for it) with my daughter. At the time, she was 22 and I was 52. I happened to mention to her that I had had a very nice evening with a young lady, who was 26. Daughter ripped me a new one. She calmed down after I explained it was a date with a friend, not an overnight fling with a lover.

Daughter rose the question whether I would entertain dating a woman older than me by 26 years (meaning 78). I had to say honestly, no I would not. My ex is almost 6 years older than I, and even that small difference in years was like we were a generation apart.

On the other hand, my father’s father married twice. Once when he and his fiance were teenagers. And again when that marriage crumbled about 30 years later. His new wife was 20 years old, and that marriage lasted almost 40 years until the old man died at 84.

Re-marriages can be rough on the kids from the first marriage, even more so if the new spouse is younger than the kids. My grandfather and his second wife burned every letter involving their romance, and the correspondence with wife 1 and son 1. Even my dad (son 3) didn’t know all the details, though he met son 1 one or twice.

May-September romances sometimes work out well. Sometimes not. I have no recommendations on this matter, but I would think twice about marrying a woman anywhere close to my kids’ ages.

I met this lady and, although I liked her a lot, did not actively pursue her, one of the reasons being that I figured she was just too young, nineteen years my junior. Plus she was always away on a vacation, business trip or visiting her boyfriend in Cologne.

She just assumed I did not like her. I did, I was just not going to set myself up for more rejection/frustration.

So it turned into one of those rom-com situations of us leaning closer and closer into each other until we fell head over heels.

It helps that I can pass for fortysomething although I am 54, but it is clear to us that the age difference is of little consequence now, will start to be an issue in about ten years and be a serious issue in about 20.

At some point, though, the age difference becomes creepy. Younger men used to hit on me because I was very young looking (and small), up into my 40s. My sons were blunt: Don’t fuck our friends. Evidently because their friends commented to them about me, which I found out. I really think it would have embarrassed them to no end if I had wound up with someone much younger than I was, closer to their ages (not even 20 yrs younger than I am), but the youngest I dated with any regularity were usually less than 10 years younger, and probably another reason I never married—they simply were not mature enough in my estimation and we had very little in common.

You have a historical point, but I think it can be abstracted and repurposed out of its previous context.

Because it is sneaking up on us in ways that are only visible to a truly vigilant patriot (with a paranoid streak and no clue of either Islam or the Constitution).

Ah, so it’s a giant game of Capture the Flag.

And the truly vigilant patriot sucks at it, because they haven’t actually tagged out the creeping sharia-ist, despite the Creeper being way-deep in Patriot territory, cut off from their teammates and own territory.

But the Patriot believes that others on the Patriot team are helping out Team Sharia to capture the Patriot flag, because that way Team Sharia won’t have to clean up after the cooking of the s’mores at tonight’s campfire, leaving Team Patriot to police the area?

And somehow, these Team Patriot traitors will be let out of KP… because?

Gotcha.

“When a much younger, less sophisticated person takes a lover the age of a parent, says Dr. Leo Kron, the director of adolescent and child psychiatry at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, “it may create for her the opportunity to avoid the anxiety of normal development. It can be a way to avoid socialization. It’s a safe haven with a parent figure, an escape from the normal vicissitudes of growing up. The fact she had such a deprived early existence makes it more difficult for her to become independent. There’s a greater risk of getting involved in a relationship where she has to be taken care of.”

This is a link to a paged story on Woody Allen and his relationship with Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter,

Although he’s talking specifically about Soon-Yi and Woody Allen, it could apply to everyone. It’s something older people should absolutely consider when looking at a much younger person as a mate.

It’s a variation on the whole “Reds under the bed” theme. The stealthy, hidden menace.

Heh……Muslims like me, white guys, dress totally Western, and indeed are Western in their thinking (supporters of democratic governance, secular, people who take that whole ‘Congress shall make no law recognizing the establishment of religion nor prohibiting the free practice thereof’ seriously, totally comfortable with popular culture, listens to Iron Maiden, etc.) must be the real stuff of Islamophobe nightmares.

This could all apply if said person is not yet fully developed.

I would like to think that in my case (she 35, me 54), the difference is no longer one of personal development, I have simply been around a bit longer. She has had a reasonable relationship with her parents and no serious authority/abuse issues. Heck, in a lot of ways, she is a lot more socially developed than I am…

About the same age as I was when I had an affair w/a man of the same age (it was 17 yrs). At the same time, he had already been married twice, once to a student of his, who was a friend of mine, also. She recommended him to me, BTW, as a great guy, but she moved on. We both had sons about the same age and vacationed with them (he had custody). Unfortunately, he moved to Chicago to teach at Loyola, but it was probably for the best, and I accepted it. As much as I admired him, I didn’t love him.

I was shattered at the time. In the meantime, I have heard that she has since become a born-again Baptist and he has joined the Arizona MInutemen border militia.

Good god there’s so much derp here.

Where to start:

1) Gohmert’s finally in a position where he’s feeling the pinch of annual increases on his health care costs - costs that have risen for well … everyone .. before ACA, and will continue rising even after ACA because that’s what insurance companies and businesses do - they raise costs and pass them on to the insureds.

2) Bitching that his increases are solely due to ACA ignores 1.

3) Gohmert’s really going to show everyone that he’s really as dumb as people say he is when god forbid someone in his immediate family comes down with an illness requiring medical attention. He will then pay out of pocket higher costs and know the sting of what it’s like to be uninsured. In fact, he’ll know what the millions of people who didn’t have insurance until the ACA was enacted have faced for decades - that being uninsured sucks.

4) Major snowstorms in NYC metro area can suck especially when they hit hardest during rush hour. The rush to judgment on roads being clear in the middle of the snowstorm is insane. The roads now are clear/nearly clear. Even in the neighborhoods where they were busy bitching about the lack of plows last night. Last night, when there were traffic jams and the plows couldn’t get down most of these streets because people were trying to get home.

The expectations for snow clearance is crazy. This was a record snow for the day. That a particular street was not down to pavement in the middle of a heavy snow is unrealistic.

But it goes to just how some folks want to find something - anything really - that can ding the new mayor who’s only major tests since he was sworn in have been two major snowstorms - both of record proportions especially in conjunction with record/near record cold.

78 lawhawk  Wed, Jan 22, 2014 5:09:04am

And all the problems in the NYC metro area with the weather is nothing compared to the ongoing turmoil in Kiev or Thailand, where the governments are under siege from popular uprisings. Both have seen significant rioting/violence, and both have been a sustained conflict that has been significantly underreported.

In my opinion, he was a pig and looked like one, but he acted like he was god’s gift to Chinese women. Anyway, she’s told me she prefers older men for two reasons (1) they’re more mature and (2) they fill in for the father she never had. Her mom and dad, you see, only had two daughters. Dad was emotionally distant from his offspring. She’s honest about her motivations, and the current arrangement seems to suit her. It’s hard to tell from where I am, since they live in Beijing.

Because that’s the level of crazy regarding the snow removal in NYC. Major snow and people complaining about snow removal in the middle of the storm when there’s traffic jams keeping trucks from getting through to clear the streets.

If the roads were impassible tonight or tomorrow, that’s a different story. That would show incompetence but that’s simply not the case.

I know several couples here in China with a young woman and older man. Maybe it’s more acceptable here than in the US. Young women (and their families) want security, a steady income, a house and a car. Young men can’t offer all that. Usually, the age difference is no more than 10-15 years, however.

Girls who marry someone much older, say someone about their fathers’ age, would lose face for themselves and their families. Unless, of course, the old fart is wealthy or has a high position in government. Then, it’s a combination of disdain and envy.

newyorker.com

Some observers, looking at the possibility that Snowden was in league with the Russian government before taking asylum there, have pointed to a report in a Russian newspaper, Kommersant, that before leaving Hong Kong last June Snowden stayed at the Russian consulate. Snowden’s legal adviser, Ben Wizner, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, denied that report, however, saying, “Every news organization in the world has been trying to confirm that story. They haven’t been able to, because it’s false.”

You then fail to follow up Wizner’s statement with some of those media attempts to confirm the Kommersant story? For example:

buzzfeed.com

In an interview with Russian state TV and the Associated Press published early Wednesday, Putin confirmed a report — denied by both Snowden’s camp and Fidel Castro — in Kommersant that Snowden had appealed to Russian diplomats in Hong Kong for help after the U.S. sought to extradite him. Putin insisted, however, that he did not know that Snowden was flying to Russia two days later until two hours before he boarded the plane to Moscow.

“Snowden told me that having a “go bag” packed—something that Rogers described as highly suspicious—reflected his work deployed overseas for the C.I.A. He’d had a “go bag packed since 2007. It’s not an exotic practice for people who have lived undercover on government orders,” Snowden said.”

You never were a spy, you liar. You were little more than a go-fer.

When things started to go to hell in a handbasket with my soon-to-be ex wife, I kept a “go-bag” packed for the event that I might want to up and leave at very short notice.

Do we really think Snowjob has unlimited access to the press in Russia?

Here’s the AP/Putin interview as presented by Russia Today. This occurs at ~1:50:

Youtube Video

PUTIN: “I’m going to honestly tell you something I never said before, though I’ve hinted, but I haven’t said it. Snowden first met with our diplomats while in Hong Kong. I was told about it and that he was an intelligence agency employee. ‘What does he want?’ I asked. The answer was that he fought for freedom of information. Fought illegal activities in the US, in violations of international law. I said, ‘tell him if he wants to stay in Russia he needs to stop any work that damages Russia / US relations. We are not an NGO, we have national interests, and we have no intention of damaging Russian / American relations’. And he said, ‘no, I’m a human rights activist and I urge you to join my cause.” And I said, ‘no, we aren’t joining his cause. If he wants to fight let him fight on his own.’ So he just walked out and that’s it.”

Putin then goes on to, just like Snowden, blame the US for Snowden ending up in Russia.

Anyway, Jane Mayer really should have done more research before publishing that claim.

Opposition came from the building in silence and did not give any comments. They only promised to tell all at a briefing in the House of Trade Unions. The negotiations lasted over three hours.

The press service of the president reported, “the first stage of negotiations between the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych participated in working groups to resolve the political crisis and the leader of the opposition parliamentary factions.”

Official snowfall for the city was 14” I think. Local here in Center City looks more like 8-10”. Sparse attendance at work with a lot of people working from home and still digging out. Streets are clear, can be navigated with care, but not down to pavement yet, even on the main boulevards I can see (Market and JFK).

I don’t think that’s brass, but TiO2 coated hardened steel. This is what the slug looks like originally, note the two soft lead collars to interface with the barrel and act as a gas check. Whatever use it has against people is incidental and comes from shear size, it’s designed to penetrate a car’s engine compartment and fuck shit up, tear hoses or possibly crack an engine block. It was designed as a cludge anti-material round that could be fired from civilian shotguns.

204 Justanotherhuman  Wed, Jan 22, 2014 9:01:59am

Statement by Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf on the Reported Deaths in Ukraine Street Clashes

ukraine.usembassy.gov

The United States strongly condemns the increasing violence on the streets of Kyiv, which has led to casualties and the shooting deaths of two protesters. We urge all sides to immediately de-escalate the situation and refrain from violence. Increased tensions in Ukraine are a direct consequence of the Ukrainian government’s failure to engage in real dialogue and the passage of anti-democratic legislation on January 16. However, the aggressive actions of members of extreme-right group Pravy Sektor are not acceptable and are inflaming conditions on the streets and undermining the efforts of peaceful protestors. We likewise deplore violence by unofficial groups known as “titushki.” We also condemn the targeted attacks against journalists and peaceful protestors, including detentions. The Maidan movement has been defined by a spirit of non-violence that we strongly support.

We urge the Government of Ukraine to take steps that represent a better way forward for Ukraine, including repeal of the anti-democratic legislation and beginning a national dialogue with the political opposition. The United States has already revoked visas of several people responsible for violence, and will continue to consider additional steps in response to the use of violence by any actors.

Agreed. I’d have to give the government the edge, though, just on the basis of sheer power. And frankly all they have to do is hold on till after the Olympics and then Putin will send the cavalry >Cossacks.

I’d agree; in cases such as this, I usually give any government the advantage. Now if the Ukrainian Army were to intervene on the side of the protesters, of course, that changes the balance - I don’t see that happening in this particular case, but I could be wrong.

If the protesters storm an armory and make off with a big fat haul of weapons, well, then shit gets real. Horrifically so.

Too much of Ukraine’s defense industry has contracts with Russia, so that like you I don’t see the army intervening. As for storming an armory, the protestors would have to fight through a ring of riot police to do that, which I don’t see happening.

Incendiary weapons would be effective if protestors are using flammable materials in constructing barricades. Set the barricades on fire to weaken them and terrify the protestors. Especially if one the the Molotovs actually hits someone. Setting some of the enemy on fire has historically been an excellent morale breaker.

Note: The tactics described above are utter inhumane and in the US are entirely illegal. I condemn them without reservation, and my analysis of them should not be read as my approval of them.

Well, he’s right. He did play a significant role in feeding the divisive culture in today’s politics. But I have no doubt his “regrets” are just a reflection of his new business model, he’s a carnival barker and not much more. However, I think his real legacy is he lowered the bar for cable news so low that everything that follows no longer seems unusual. It’s a business model that was bound to happen eventually because this is what the audiences want but Beck certainly helped open the floodgates for hate based partisan cable pundits.

My mother was 20 and my dad was in his 40’s when they married, granted, she was a model, very sophisticated, intelligent, and carried herself very well so my Dad assumed she was older, like maybe mid to late 20’s, which he already had a problem with. She let him assume she was older. HA!
When they got serious and she finally admitted to him how old she was, she said he lost all the color in his face and put his face in his hands. Eventually he accepted it and they married, they were together 12 years but they will tell you it was a mistake, she was looking for a Father figure, which she grew out of, and he was always looking for someone to rescue and take care of.

I never liked older men, I would always say “Sorry Sir, I had a Dad and a good one!”
Now that I have turned 40, I have all these young men after me, that has taken me by surprise. Apparently it’s become more acceptable for this (although I know some cultures it was always common).
I am not into younger men either. I prefer men around my own age.

re: #292 Killgore Trout

I suppose the military would follow orders to crush the uprising if things get worse.

Why do you assume? These are not a volunteer force being sent abroad; these are young conscripts in their own country. Yanukovych fired the head of the military within the last week, probably for not wanting to go along with suppression.

This is an interesting analysis.
