New IUD: completely covered by insurance. Insertion: completely covered by insurance. Removal of old IUD: considered “outpatient surgery” and so covered at 90% after deductible.

This is a pretty good example of what is still pretty fucked up about our healthcare system.

‘Dumb Starbucks’ opens in L.A., but for how long?

Over the weekend, Dumb Starbucks, a coffee shop using virtually identical branding and logos to that of coffee colossus Starbucks opened up in Los Angeles. Even though on every level it operates as just another java joint, the operators believe (or at least claim to believe) that they can use the Starbucks name by stating that the entire store is a parody.

A few new little tidbits on the drone story but still no explanation why this is playing out in the press.
U.S. Suspect Possibly Targeted for Drone Attack

The CIA drones watching him cannot strike because he’s a U.S. citizen and the Justice Department must build a case against him, a task it hasn’t completed.

Four U.S. officials said the American suspected terrorist is in a country that refuses U.S. military action on its soil and that has proved unable to go after him. And President Barack Obama’s new policy says American suspected terrorists overseas can only be killed by the military, not the CIA, creating a policy conundrum for the White House.

Two of the officials described the man as an al-Qaeda facilitator who has been directly responsible for deadly attacks against U.S. citizens overseas and who continues to plan attacks against them that would use improvised explosive devices.

But one U.S. official said the Defense Department was divided over whether the man is dangerous enough to merit the potential domestic fallout of killing an American without charging him with a crime or trying him, and the potential international fallout of such an operation in a country that has been resistant to U.S. action.

Another of the U.S. officials said the Pentagon did ultimately decide to recommend lethal action.

The officials said the suspected terrorist is well-guarded and in a fairly remote location, so any unilateral attempt by U.S. troops to capture him would be risky and even more politically explosive than a U.S. missile strike.

You know, when a US citizen actively plans to engage in terrorist attacks killing his fellow Americans and relocates to a country hostile to the US to make it harder to get to him, its almost like he’s trying to not willing to obey US laws anymore.

Spent some time today digging on the citizenship status of the 300,000 or so Americans killed in the Civil War. That comparison is weakened by genuine disagreement over their exact status. A better comparison might be the hundreds of US citizens of German, Italian, and Japanese extraction who found their way back to the Old Country to fight against us in WWII. They generated no absurd calls for ‘due process on the battlefield’.

Yeah, those “tough calls” never involved exec pay cuts, holding back bonuses, or asking higher-paid execs to retire or look for employment elsewhere. No, they’ve “earned” all that and are “entitled” to it.

Meanwhile, Wal-Mart’s response to these “tough times” has been to cut pay, cut hours, and to cut jobs. Costco’s has been to keep pay high and offer generous benefits to its employees. The former is losing customers because it can’t keep shelves stocked or lines short, while the latter just posted sales 6% above the previous year.

Obviously the answer needed in these dire times is to follow the example of the Waltons.

48 Targetpractice  Mon, Feb 10, 2014 7:34:41pm

Wal-Mart’s learning the lesson that a lot of businesses learned during the Great Depression: You can only cut your workforce so far before it becomes self-defeating. The fewer folks you have on the line, the less work that can be done, the fewer customers served, the lower sales you’re going to record. Sales go down, you cut your workforce, and the cycle only deepens.

NYT names the country:U.S. Debates Drone Strike on American Terror Suspect in Pakistan

A

merican officials said that the new discussions about whether to strike the American in Pakistan had been going on since the middle of last year. The public got a glimpse of the debate last week when Representative Mike Rogers of Michigan, the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, spoke angrily about the drone restrictions imposed by Mr. Obama.

“Individuals who would have been previously removed from the battlefield by U.S. counterterrorism operations for attacking or plotting to attack against U.S. interests remain free because of self-imposed red tape,” Mr. Rogers said during a congressional hearing.

The new rules, Mr. Rogers said, are “endangering the lives of Americans at home and our military overseas in a way that is frustrating to our allies and frustrating to those of us who engage in the oversight of our classified activities.”
…..
The administration’s ambivalence on this case has infuriated Mr. Rogers. “The chairman is fired up about this,” the congressional aide said.

The aide also confirmed that the Defense Department was initially reluctant to place the individual on the targeting list, questioning whether he met the new standards that Mr. Obama laid out last May. But eventually the Pentagon came around, said the aide, who added that the C.I.A. had supported a lethal strike from the beginning.

This opens up some new possibilities. The debate has been going on over a year. The CIA and Pentagon want a strike but the White house is unsure. This also opens up the possibility that the “leaks” were not an intentional thing from the White House to gauge public opinion. This might have been disgruntled Pentagon, CIA or congressional Republicans.
If this dude is still in Pakistan he’s thinking about moving.

Some people are really disgusting.

For the past month, inboxes across the United States and beyond have been getting funeral notices that appear to be from Eubank Funeral Home in Canton, Texas, 60 miles east of Dallas.

Without saying who has died, the fake emails invite the recipient to an upcoming “celebration of your friend’s life service” and instruct the recipient to click a link for “more detailed information about the farewell ceremony.”

“It reaches to people’s curiosity and their natural instinct to find out who passed away,” Bass told Yahoo News.

But instead of going to Eubank’s website, the Better Business Bureau says, the link in the email takes readers to a foreign domain where malicious software is downloaded onto the user’s computer allowing criminals access to passwords, financial records, and other personal information stored on the computer.

Bears and dogs share a common ancestor.

For that matter, Homo sapiens and E. coli share a common ancestor. Of course, that was considerably longer ago (2.5 billion years, give or take). Bear/dog divergence was only about 45 million.

There’s a great app here that will calculate the time of divergence for any two species. I’ve found a few gaps, but the coverage is reasonably complete.

Wait, you mean a death spiral? The world may suck with Wal-Mart, but it would be even worse without them, at least in towns that would wind up taking a lot of bitter medicine before their employment levels got back up to pre-WM-collapse levels…so I really hope there’s a way to pull out before they go out of business.

Besides, every store has some exclusive-to-the-area items, and I like some of the junk-food ones WM has to offer. And beyond that, their price for pseudoephedrine caplets is like half what other retailers are asking. And when you go through a 12-hour pill a day just to keep your discharge from thickening and tearing holes in the lining of your throat, that’s a pretty big deal…

Seriously. Don’t they know that if “the secular progressive movement” is going to turn America into any of the historical dystopias, it’ll be Stalinist Russia?

It’s because Americans are generally more familiar with the horrors of the Nazi regime than they are with the horrors of Stalin’s USSR. Additionally, Adolf Hitler has become, quite frankly, almost a caricature for evil incarnate; Americans “understand” Hitler and the Nazis as a symbolic representation of the darkness of the human heart more so than they do Stalin.

I use “understand” in quotes because a lot of Americans are woefully ignorant of what the Nazi ideology represented. Pro Tip: it’s not liberalism.

No, we get snow from time to time. The last time we got 6” was about 5 yrs ago. And we live at a lake, so when it does snow here, we get that “lake effect”.

It’s infrequent enough that most people forget how to drive in it. This has been a very, very cold winter with a lot of nights in single digits and teens. Today we’ll reach 38, but tomorow it’s not supposed to get above 28. We’ve had a few days like that this winter.

LONDON (Reuters) - Barclays said it would axe up to 12,000 jobs this year even as it raised bonuses for investment bankers, prompting fury among politicians and unions who said it had not learned the lessons of the financial crisis.

“Britain’s third-biggest bank said up to 9 percent of employees could go, including 7,000 in Britain, as it tries to lower costs. The cuts are not concentrated in any one business area.

“It said it paid 2.4 billion pounds ($3.9 billion) in incentive awards last year, raising bonuses at the investment bank by 13 percent despite a slump in its profits. The average bonus for the investment bank’s 26,200 staff was 60,100 pounds.”

That’s what I was gonna say — IMAO, pork fat is the optimum fat for curing/seasoning for cast iron, but what do I know?

I do think with a base cure of shortening, you could work some cast iron magic with schmaltz.

The Lodge skillets are pre-seasoned and they are certified kosher, so probably some kind of vegetable fat has been used.

re: #168 Pie-onist Overlord

I keep kosher so I can’t buy a used skillet, I don’t know what it’s been used for.

Then Lodge is the way to go, rather than guessing. If you have a BBQ grill, a smoker type, you can “cure” it in that better than in your oven. You could look online for ways to do it using a vegetable based cure (not lard or any meat products). It takes time, and stinks (which is why you don’t want to do it in the house).

Haha, I heard some banging, and my neighbor was coming in a few min ago with groceries and I poked my head out and said, You’re going to need those if we get 6” and are snowed in for a couple of days. He’s from Jersey and laughed and said, Yeah, 6” here is like 4’ up north.

Looks like we’re on the cusp and could possibly get more than 6, depending on how accurate this is. But I’m not counting on it; famous last words and all.

You might work with two — like wheat-dogg, the only dairy I’ve ever cooked in my skillet were grilled cheese sammitches.

Strike that, the sammitches were worth an extra skillet. (Just get a little one.)

194 Justanotherhuman  Tue, Feb 11, 2014 6:00:23am

I have a little 6” cast iron skillet that is perfect for grilled cheese sand or scrambling eggs…

Also, a 12” skillet, deep chicken fryer (lids for both), a dutch oven and even a 3 qt pot w/lid. The only one w/o a lid is the tiny frying pan. Gave my “spider” (skillet sized griddle) to my son and regret it now. : ) And wish I had accepted the corn muffin pan someone offered. I rescued a huge cast iron stock pot from beside our dumpster and cleaned it up and gave it to a friend. Much too big for me and she might have been able to sell it.

Once a pan or pot is seasoned right, you can lightly wash it, just don’t soak it very long. A well-seasoned pan will not stick but act like a non-stick one, although you can still burn stuff which might stick.

The rule for cleaning woks is to rinse with hot water, but no soap or detergent unless it’s really glommed up with grease or oil. A brush works better for cleaning than a sponge or dishrag. Then, return the wok to the burner to dry.

Smoke points for oils depends.

EVOO has a higher smoke point than the regular stuff.

I season my wok with sesame oil with a little canola added. I probably need to give a good workover outside, where the smoke isn’t an issue, but it’s not too bad for indoors. (and why does season my wok sound… well… dirty? /or is it just me)…

As usual, Ben Carson, and the rest of the TeaParty & FoxNews idiots prove their complete ignorance of history.

The fascist Nazi Party’s rise to power was due to their reaction to the Weimar Republic’s progressive policies because of the effects of the Great Depression as well the financial strain of post-WWI reparations that Germany was forced to make.

Fast forward 70 years, and what political group is it that is extremely socially conservative, who repeatedly espouse “self-deportation” rhetoric toward non-white immigrants, and want to restrict basic rights of entire groups (whether it be racial or sexual orientation) of people who they consider to be “degenerate”? I wonder if Mr. Carson would be willing to make a side-by-side comparison with the number of outright white supremacists in his political movement versus any “progressive” organization.
Also, I don’t remember ANY progressive/liberal type who in the past 30+ years espoused the violent overthrow of our legally-elected government, not to mention numerous statements and images advocating the assassination of a sitting President - all of which happens on an almost-daily basis from the right-wingers.

I have two 9” cast iron skillets. Can’t live without them. And like you, I wash them. But never submerged, I like to clean them when they are a little warm, a squirt of dish soap and I use a little soft scrubber pad. As soon as they dry, I pour a little canola/vegetable oil in them and take a paper towel and buff the oil into the surface until the surface is dry and has a nice sheen. Ready to go for then next time. It’s sort of like oiling a baseball glove. I’ve had them for well over 40 years. Bought them at a general store in Ohio’s Amish country. I wish I would have bought a larger one at the same time.

re: #239 darthstar

One such tasty nugget from that article:

In any case, far from denigrating American intelligence we should applaud it. It helps catch terrorists, gangster and foreign spies. The oversight and scrutiny is the toughest in the world. America has taken the most elusive and lawless part of government and crammed it into a system of legislative and judicial control. America is also part of the world’s only successful no-spy agreement, with its close allies—notably Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Would Switzerland or Austria, say trust Germany enough to sign a no-spy deal? I suspect not.

Snowden’s published revelations include material that has nothing to do with his purported worries about personal privacy. They reveal how countries like Norway and Sweden spy on Russia. Why is it in the public interest to reveal how democracies spy on dictatorships? The Snowdenistas’ outrage is based on the fact that this spying takes place in cooperation with the NSA, the Great Satan of the intelligence world.

Other disclosures are similarly hard to justify. Why is it in the public interest to reveal how the NSA intercepts e-mails, phone calls, and radio transmissions of Taliban fighters in Pakistan, or to show that the agency is intensifying scrutiny on the security of that country’s nuclear weapons? Snowden even revealed details of how the NSA hacks into computers and mobile phones in China and Hong Kong.

The spin and hype surrounding these leaks has cast a harsh, distorting and damaging light on the intelligence agencies’ work. The damage is catastrophic. It dwarfs the damage done by the traitors of cold-war era. Our spymasters are aghast at the damage, but stay tight-lipped about details for fear of making matters worse.

I’d agree with the author who notes that the Snodwenistas are a bunch of naive fools, and there’s no reason to trust Snowden on anything - particularly about the storage and security of the documents he stole.

The NSA and US officials have to assume that anything Snowden touched is now in the hands of the Chinese and/or Russians, and that the compromise to those programs is significant.

And for what? To make claims that the US spied on US citizens (except that in most instances there were warrants and judicial oversight, not what Greenwald initially claimed), and to undermine US relations with allies, even though the spying had nothing to do with violations of US law (one of the excuses thrown around by Greenwald and Snowden was the lawlessness of the NSA, when the very opposite is true - there’s significant oversight involved).

I have two 9” cast iron skillets. Can’t live without them. And like you, I wash them. But never submerged, I like to clean them when they are a little warm, a quirt of dish soap and I use a little soft scrubber pad.

You’re doing it exactly right. The main rule is, or should be—even when a pan is “cured”, never put cast iron up until it’s completely dry. I’ve been known to put mine on a low heat to dry out before I oiled and wiped it down. Last night, I left the frying pan on the stove with the lid to one side after use and let it dry out completely overnight, putting it up this morning.

Carson can’t and won’t do a comparison of liberal/progressive organizations with white supremacists because I suspect he knows he’s being intellectually dishonest. Really, I don’t know how these right wing idiots criticize us for embracing multi-culturalism and yet want to call us the heirs of the Nazis in the same breath. And for what it’s worth while I disdain their worldview, i don’t think they are either but then again unlike FNC and its viewers I feel I can disagree with someone without seeing them as the heirs to the Nazis and fascist movements of the 30’s.

Yeah it’s the obsession with looking at civil rights history with party labels and not nuances. The sad story though is if the Civil Rights movement was around now, I don’t think as many Republicans would have embraced it as they did in the 50’s and 60’s. re: #268 HappyWarrior

When you look at the votes for civil rights (and current opposition to expanding civil rights protections to other classes) on a geographical basis, there’s a whole different game at play.

It’s the Southern States that continue to large oppose, regardless of what party label you’ve attached. It’s almost like a certain war of Southern Secession never happened from the rhetoric and ahistorical positions taken.

Good morning Lizards.

Cold and sunny in Philadelphia with clouds, snow, rain, cats and dogs living together, coming up in the next couple of days.

Last couple of essays on Stonekettle Station have been a bit inward looking. And also some of Jim Wright’s buttons being pushed I think.

stonekettle.com

I am sort of mixed in my reaction to the last two entries. I agree pretty heartily in that one needs to define oneself and not let one be labeled (and thus to a degree controlled) by others. However, you also need to be responsive to others since you are part of a community and not on an island. It seems to hinge on one deciding to take responsibility and acting that way due to it being right in their own eyes. But how does this apply for a community when someone reaches a self-definition that essentially comes out as rude and asshole behavior?

The more recent essay brings out one of the main issues with social networks - the abuse of said labels, use of them to short circuit discussion, and the ease by which mob mentality rises and then abuses people. And people do abuse this since they do not want to have discussion or take the time to understand opposing viewpoints. Easier to hypocritically toss out a label and unleash the hounds. And as above, how about cases when the target has actually been an asshole? The cases start to blur since how can you tell when someone is being unfairly labeled, and when someone has acted in ways that make the label valid in their case?

Yeah geography is probably the biggest factor I’d say after ideology. VB I think though has made a wonderful point about the GOP. In 1964, the year CRA was passed they nominated an opponent of the bill for president. The next year the Dems nominated Humphrey who famously urged the party to get out of the shadows of states rights and into the sunshine of human rights and this was ‘1948.

At least Ike was worthy of being liked. And as history has proved, his last state of the union address was very prescient. A speech everyone should read.

Hmm…I wonder if Dickless Cheney read it, or used it as a guide?

I wanted to do t-shirts that said: Abe, Teddy and Ike…Republicans I could like!

Then I figured with today’s level of political knowledge all it would do is cause people to go “Who’s Teddy?” “Abe, wha’?” Ike???

I wanted to do shirts back in the 70’s just after Nixon went to China that had a big ol’ building sprawling into the Chinese hillsides that said “The Great Mall of China.”

Another: “We win the cold war” with a Coke logo and bottle and a Levis logo with some jeans. I always figured America would win out with marketing ideas.

All the GOP plans essentially start from the same place - repealing Obamacare before implementing some lesser version of the law that increases costs to the consumer, reduces the number of insureds, or otherwise rolls back the protections imposed by ACA on insurers to provide insurance that actually protects the insureds.

But the GOP is still playing word games trying to claim that their goal isn’t destroying Obamacare; so they’ll attempt to trot out plans that look like they’re fixing Obamacare, but the details give away the game. It’s still the same delay, defund, destroy ACA that they’ve been pushing since 2009.

They’re never going to make any progress if this continues to be their obsession while the signer of Obamacare remains in office. It’s like this is the only thing the Republicans think about. If they were truly smart, they’d look at the polls and realize that people like ACA, they don’t love it. So why not run on a platform of improving it. Oh wait, that would mean not being a party of vindictive dicks who are upset because other people now are insured. I thought this was the Republican party of Nixon that still had some humanity left.

Case in point, the “alternative” released a couple weeks back in the Senate, which at even first glance was a non-starter. For a party that is so against new spending, the GOP certainly does love the idea of tax credits as a way to “encourage” people to adopt certain behavior. And “paying” for those by capping the employer deduction on health insurance is laughter inducing when you consider how much they’ve screamed that businesses are getting rid of health insurance due to the ACA.

And since there was talk that at least 150 votes existed to pass yesterday’s bill, finding 18 willing to put this madness to bed should not be a struggle.

I’m surprised, I figured Boehner would hold out til at least early afternoon before he gave up the game.

Shirley Temple is ginger ale and grenadine with a cherry garnish; Roy Rogers replaces the ginger ale with cola.

Ah that’s right. I remember liking getting a Rogers since I loved the cherry garnish. And then Dad tells me those aren’t as healthy as regular cherries. Rats and they’re sweeter too and no pit!

Our members aren’t [all batcrap] crazy. Yeah, Speaker Boehner, that ad writes itself.

You’ve just indicated that those who vote against the debt ceiling deal are, in fact, crazy. Thank you for recognizing what we’ve noted for a while, that the GOP is completely unhinged from reality and that the only thing they want is to see the President hurt politically at all costs, even if it destroys the economy in the process.

The GOP shutdown should have been a lesson in humility for the GOP, but we continue to see that the TP extortionists still can’t get the hang of governing. So, they’re railing against Boehner, who just wants to play out the string.

I actually lost my taste for maraschinos as I got older. Probably had something to do with my youthful overindulgence. I don’t think I’ve eaten one in 10 years.

My daughter can do that trick of tying a knot in a maraschino stem with her tongue, but I’ve never tried it.

All the utility trucks sent up to NJ and PA to deal with the ice storm here from down South are being recalled, because of the major storm about to hit there.

Meanwhile, forecasters in NYC metro are starting to worry me with their latest forecasts.

Channel 7 has been pretty good with forecasts this season, but Channel 11 has been better IMO.

The difference in the two forecasts so far? Channel 7 has real tight banding - you’re either going to get hammered, or you’re not seeing a whole lot of snow (the temps on LI will keep the snow totals down). Channel 11 has more snow over the entire area, with increases as you move north and west from NYC (suggesting the temps will be low enough for the entire area to get significant snow).

Right-wing groups including Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform are also working to defeat the union drive; billboards from ATR’s Center for Worker Freedom warn workers that “The UAW spends millions to elect liberal politicians, including BARACK OBAMA” and (quoting Reuters) that “almost every job lost at U.S. car factories in the last 30 years has occurred at a unionized company …” The Center for Worker Freedom is directed by Matt Patterson, the co-author of a May Op-Ed that described the UAW drive as “an invading union force from the North,” and said that “the people of Tennessee routed such a force in the Battle of Chickamauga,” when the Confederate Army stymied “an invading Union army” during the Civil War. “Let their descendants go now and do likewise,” he urged. (ATR did not respond to a Friday inquiry.)

But wasn’t the Confederate Army itself a form of collective action, a coercive entity, a kind of, uh, “union” of people organized to accomplish an objective?

Iranian cartoon update: Baghdad newspaper bombed after cartoon of Iran’s Supreme Leader

Reporters Without Borders condemns yesterday morning’s bomb attack on the downtown Baghdad headquarters of the Al-Sabah Al-Jadid newspaper, five days after it published a much criticized cartoon of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. The explosion caused a great deal of damage but no injuries.

The offending cartoon illustrated an article in the newspaper’s 6 February issue, which was about the demonstrations being organized this week to mark the 34th anniversary of Iran’s Islamic Revolution and which criticized Mohammed Hidari, an Iraqi mullah who supports the Iranian regime.

Taliban suspected as hand grenades tear through Pakistan movie theater in Peshawar

A Pakistani intelligence official told CBS News the attack took place Tuesday afternoon when at least 50 people had gathered inside the Shama theater.

“All three grenades exploded in that part of the cinema where most of the film watchers were sitting. The casualty count is likely to go up further,” said the official, who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity.

Taliban militants have attacked Peshawar’s movie theaters in the past — the Islamic extremists consider movies and popular music sacrilegious.

And the sad thing is that the local DOT and the owner of the rail trestle think they’ve fixed the problem with enough signs, a crash bar, and that’s it. No attempt to actually fix the problem by raising the trestle or lowering the road (which apparently has a sewer that can’t be moved easily).

It’s like I said the other day. It’s easy to find a job if you’re willing to absolutely anything, including high pressure/low wage/no benefits position but actually trying find a decent job with a living wage? Sometimes it seems you’d have better luck trying to find Jimmy Hoffa.

Precisely. I mean yeah I could get a job at a place like Harris Teeter but I wouldn’t be using the skill-set I’ve acquired. The other annoying thing that employers do to recent grads is just offer them internships. Agh. Sorry rambling but I am really hoping I get this position. It will give me a lot of freedom that I haven’t had.

In which the right wing tries to demonize unions, because a handful may actually have had perks typically reserved for most CEOs of major corporations:

Yeah, a union boss with a plane doesn’t quite look right to a guy on the line, but the company CEO is still making far more coin than the union bigwigs, not to mention all the perks. They pay disparity doesn’t disappear because you cherry pick a union that happened to have a plane available for its top leaders. The company shareholders get rich on paying the bare minimum to workers who actually create the products being offered, and cry for givebacks when their own bad business decisions cost the company.

Look no further than AOL (a non union shop) where they complained that a couple of sickly babies cost the company enough (that would be about $2 million) to force changes on the 401k even though the CEO’s decision to go hyperlocal with Patch cost the company more than $200 million.

We’d just have to ignore that the company was self insured with reinsurance, so AOL wouldn’t suffer the “loss” - that’s what insurance is for, and the 401k changes would have deprived anyone at the company of benefits over the life of employment with the company because they’d lose out on the compounding of the match over time, and anyone who stopped working before the distribution date would lose out on that year’s match. From a view of trying to keep workers, there’s a certain logic to trying to retain workers, but the overall policy would simply send workers to companies with more favorable benefits.

Even someone who despises Reagan like me wouldn’t put Reagan and Putin in the same sentence. Putin is the new Castro actually when it comes to gays. So there you go Mr. Feder, you’re more like Fidel Castro then Ronald Reagan on LGBT rights. Good job. You look fabulous.

And teh fucks have the nerve to claim they’re persecuted when officials simply speak out for LGBT rights. Fascist fucks. The religious right is a blight on our country.

I read Mark Kirikorian’s column, which RWW failed to provide a link to, and I didn’t find it to be racist at all. It was correct in saying that the deportation deferrals for illegal immigrants had had caused massive delays for those seeking a green card legally. Kirikorian did not defend Samuel Francis’ racism, but rather said that Francis had a workable definition of the result of the Obama Administration’s actions, which is not the same thing.

So I do defend Mark Kirikorian, wholeheartedly.

We’ve got food, we should probably get some more firewood, but I have a feeling there’s none to be had around here now. My big concern really is trees falling over from the ice load, which is the main thing that would take out the power. But really, 2 or 3 carts full of food? Norquist’s position is basically the same one taken by someone who has no fucking idea how a functional government works. No wonder the GOP loves it.

Precisely and excellent point about their stance on immigration. I mean I have obviously ideological qualms with it too but it’s like “Okay, you want to put that same government that you don’t trust for health care in charge of deporting 12 million people?” Okay……….. But yeah, I hate to be harsh and call them idiots but goddamn it when conservatives act like they have a superior understanding of economics to liberals I just laugh because of shit like that. The disconnect is amazing and yeah the fact that Norquist who is government illiterate has the influence he does is truly pathetic.

Thomas Sowell, sucking up those wealthy wingnut welfare dollars.

Their pal Walter Williams, hates on government institutions yet gets his salary paid for by the VA taxpayers. It’s a healthyl racket if you know how to work it. Kind of like how R elected officials rage about government health care while having their own paid for by you and I.

Wow, I haven’t “been a Republican” since I was in the 5th grade and we wore “I Like Ike” buttons.

It was a catchy campaign slogan.

Prior to the last election I saw a bumper sticker that said

“I liked Ike so much I voted for him in 1952, 1956 & 2008. ”

Next to it was an Obama 2012 sticker too.

He was old enough to mean it :) But hey, Obama has been the best Center-Right Republican president since Ike…

Yeah better than Clinton since Obama’s been better on social issues and he of course got the health care legislation passed.

Seriously. Since when has Thomas Sowell ever actually worked for anything?

Nice try DF, but as the saying goes, “by their fruits you shall know them”. We’ve seen that one’s fruits.

Yeah I love reading columns and or hearing some blowhard on the radio lecturing the working poor about their work ethic. Rush Limbaugh? That sob has made his living putting people down. My great grandfathers weren’t wealthy men but they made at least a honest living being coal miners, engineers, and printers rather than being the living incarnation of Squealer the Pig.

re: #442 Dark_Falcon

I read Mark Kirikorian’s column, which RWW failed to provide a link to, and I didn’t find it to be racist at all. It was correct in saying that the deportation deferrals for illegal immigrants had had caused massive delays for those seeking a green card legally. Kirikorian did not defend Samuel Francis’ racism, but rather said that Francis had a workable definition of the result of the Obama Administration’s actions, which is not the same thing.

So I do defend Mark Kirikorian, wholeheartedly.

I hope that’s only because you don’t know Mark Krikorian very well, and not because you fail to recognize a racist when you see one.

He did not exhibit racism in that column, except by the fact of his casual quotation of a noxious man, regarding his very noxious, racist beliefs.

Direct links to this are broken, but I found multiple citations:

[F]or those actually interested in the point, here’s what I was trying to get across: While in the past there may well have been too much social pressure for what sociologists call Anglo-conformity, now there isn’t enough. I think that’s a concern that most Americans share at some level, which is the root of the angst over excessive immigration, bilingual education, official English, etc.

More racism:

But Krikorian says legislation like the Dream Act shouldn’t apply to people like Vargas — because he arrived in the United States at the age of 12.

“The moral case that you can make for the Dream Act — or something like the Dream Act … really only applies, it seems to me, to people whose identities have been formed here, who have no memory of any other country, who really are — as some of the advocates sometimes put it — are Americans in all but paperwork,” he says. “This doesn’t really cover a lot of the people who would be covered under the current version of the Dream Act, including Mr. Vargas. The man has real abilities and real skills, and he should go home to his country of citizenship, the country he grew up in for most of his childhood.”

Some from NRO in 2010:

My guess is that Haiti’s so screwed up because it wasn’t colonized long enough. The ancestors of today’s Haitians, like elsewhere in the Caribbean, experienced the dislocation of de-tribalization, which disrupted the natural ties of family and clan and ethnicity. They also suffered the brutality of sugar-plantation slavery, which was so deadly that the majority of slaves at the time of independence were African-born, because their predecessors hadn’t lived long enough to reproduce.

But, unlike Jamaicans and Bajans and Guadeloupeans, et al., after experiencing the worst of tropical colonial slavery, the Haitians didn’t stick around long enough to benefit from it. (Haiti became independent in 1804.). And by benefit I mean develop a local culture significantly shaped by the more-advanced civilization of the colonizers. Sure, their creole language is influenced by French, but they never became black Frenchmen, like the Martiniquais, or “Afro-Saxons,” like the Barbadians. Where a similar creolization took place in Africa, you saw a similar thing — the Cape Coloureds, who are basically black Afrikaaners, and even the Swahili peoples of the east African coast, who are Arabized blacks. A major indicator of how superficial is the overlay of French culture in Haiti is the strength of paganism, in the form of voodoo — the French just weren’t around long enough to suppress it, to the detriment of Haitians.

His work at CIS and FAIR (founded by John Tanton) are enough for me to conclude where his heart lies.

The fugitive NSA contractor, so the narrative goes, has sacrificed his career and risked his freedom to expose systematic wrongdoing by Western intelligence agencies: he has shown that America and Britain spy not only on their enemies and rivals, but on neutral and friendly countries too. They target international summits and foreign leaders. They hoover up and store vast quantities of information about domestic e-mails and phone calls. They use secret court orders to force American-based companies into cooperation. They can bug almost any international phone call, e-mail or other message.

“systematic wrongdoing” = “systematic intelligence and signals work”

Shirley Temple was a Republican before the party had completely devolved into religious bigotry, far right anti-government extremism, anti-abortion fanaticism, a bizarre fetish for guns, and an open hositility to gays, immigrants, et al.
