I was on the couch reading Dune for the upteenth time, and David Lynch’s Dune was on TV.

I had forgotten how terrible that move really is. One or two great scenes mixed with truly awful acting (by good actors even).

I turned it off, and returned to my book.

It’s horrible. When I first heard about it I was really looking forward to it, but it’s probably the worst movie Lynch ever made. And in the bottom 10 worst movies ever.

Heh.

I’d read awhile ago that Steven Spielberg was who Lucas wanted to direct ROTJ. I found it again on Cracked.

We at Cracked present to you Revenge of the Jedi

[my note - it’s original title]

directed by Steven Fucking Spielberg. Yep, that’s who we would have gotten had it not been for Lucas’ dispute with the union. And we’re talking 1982 Spielberg, a man in the middle of a run that included Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Try to wrap your mind around how awesome this would’ve been: Yoda’s death was nearly staged by the same man who shot E.T. The rancor was almost handed to the same man who directed Jurassic Park. The Battle of Endor and the attack on the shield generator were nearly captured by the same dude who won an Oscar for Saving Private Ryan.

There’s a fanedit of Lynch’s Dune that’s actually quite good. It’s called “Dune - Alternative Edition Redux (fanedit)”.

It’s tolerable.

That would sort of make sense in an oil-producing region that was already starting to suffer from depletion. The local effects would be incredibly obvious.

My dad was at the time the credit manager for Champlain Oil, “the great name in the great plains.” (I can still hear the musical jingle in my head.)

I always think of her when people seem so surprised by the concept that our current methods are UNSUSTAINABLE. If a kindergarten teacher could see this in 1957… let’s just say that the fact we are where we are now, still debating the issue politically and with irrevocable damage having been done in the intervening years, is so fucking depressing.

That there were so many great actors on that movie, and it ended up being that bad (and it’s still among my favorite bad movies), tells you something about Lynch and what he was trying to do.

BBC America just had the extended version on, and it was epic in its badness. For whatever reason, the visual quality was even worse than I remember, and it was 4 hour runtime.

The SyFy (?) was equally bad. I remember my brother and I calling each other while it was on and laughing very hard at some scenes.

In the Kentucky US Senate race, I want to point out that Bevin is a complete wingnut teabagger Libertarian, so a crushing defeat for him is just fine with me.
HOWEVER, as I check the various local reports, it’s very interesting (and a comfort) that Alison Lundergan Grimes’ vote totals as compared to the R primary numbers are very impressive so far.
Also, I know many Republicans who will be voting for Alison in November. I don’t know a single Democrat that will be voting for Mitch.

I know it’s still very early, but via wlwt.com here’s how it’s shaking up so far:

For example, a family who always voted at a precinct in the county seat found out today that their precinct had been moved (without notification) to another location about a half-hour away.
We are not that big of a county, population-wise, but huge geographically.

Other people had changed their voter registration (well before the deadline for doing so), but found out that nothing had changed when they showed up to vote.

Now that Mitch McConnell has vanquished the Tea Party, we can look forward to him tacking back to his more centrist roots, right?

Ok, maybe not…he still has to make sure he has the mouth breather wing of the party fired up for the general.

But after November, we can look forward to SENATE MAJORITY LEADER McConnell really resume being the moderate we used to know, right?

Ok, maybe not…he would be in a position of having to wrangle more than a few wackos just in the Senate.

So at what point will be able to stop calling him a moderate centrist?

If women just locked themselves in rooms and armed themselves heavily, none of them would be raped. It’s obviously their fault if they go out in public without wearing a burka.

Yet again, a correspondence between Christian and Muslim extremists: a firm conviction that the male tendency to lust is ungovernable and it’s entirely the fault of women if they expose themselves to that.

The FBI has asked for all communications between the state and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the so-called “gate reviews,” in which federal officials supposedly quizzed state officials about the status of the IT project.

The FBI is also seeking communications with Exeter Systems, another technology company that approached the state saying it had a cheap, off-the-shelf technology that would meet the state’s needs.

Documents obtained through Oregon’s public-records law have shown that the Legislature’s IT oversight analyst, Bob Cummings, felt the state misled federal officials about the status of the project. He related that Exeter felt the same, and that a Cover Oregon demonstration to the feds that was “little more than what” an Exeter executive - formerly with Oracle — “had built as a ‘demo’ for Oregon.”

Don’t know if this new Libyan National Army (LNA) is going to be able to get the job done, but I hope it can. What would best put the matter of the Benghazi Incident to rest would for the LNA be to capture some of those Islamist militia leaders, then for the CIA to put them to the question.

Beautiful. Quite a hike up. Looks so worth it.

Just under 4000 ft. vert of climbing with spontaneous treacherous posthole-ing on the approach and egress.

The gal friend I was with never snow-climbed a mountain before. She borrowed a bigger backpack and an ice ax from a friend of mine. Poor gal, she had to learn SELF-ARREST while travelling on snow the hard way this morning. I didn’t see it, I was about 40 yards ahead finding a route.

She scraped up her hand pretty good, and endured some minor abrasions on her thighs. We caught up minutes later, after she yelled my name 4 times (I was down-climbing to investigate, because she was out of sight) and she said “I learned VERY QUICK how this works!” “This” referring to snow-climbing a mountain with an ice ax.

It was a glorious day. What the hell. I’ll share a picture that makes a nice circle. Here’s my lady friend on her first glissade (after the summit and well after the bloodying of her hand in her crash course in self arrest on snow).

Her first glissade. She called it a “Butt-Slide” which sounds acutely MURKAN!

There is no end of “reality TV” in America, and one of the most popular are food shows, or rather food-porn shows, IMO.

Anyway, Food Network recently threw up several new shows, most of which come off to me as being very forced in their structure. And most derivative, even of themselves, always trying to come up with a better Chopped.

One of the most uncomfortable to watch is “Kitchen Casino”, one episode only that I’ve viewed, and that was enough.

At the end the winner gets to gamble his winnings by spinning a wheel, the downside being he could lose all his winning award. But, out of 16 stations on the wheel only one of them is “bust”. The other 15 stations are all good (returning a little to much more money) or neutral. Who wouldn’t take the chance to spin the wheel? You’ve only got a 6% chance of losing.

I’m trying to figure out why the producers thought adding a casino gimmick would make a cooking competition more interesting, when there aren’t real casino games.

On top of everything else the host for Kitchen Casino looks like stepped out of a 1950’s cigarette advertisement.

Charles could add a casino gimmick to LGF - put images of roulette wheels on the front, have all our avatars be playing cards. Even make a little Java app to simulate a slot machine to mesmerize us while we’re reading posts.

But it just wouldn’t make sense.

And that was the problem back then - so much of the really good popular music was “black” and categorized as such. Nat Cole was able to cross over into white society, but so many good black musicians hit a glass ceiling.

In those days, Bing Crosby could do an uninspired job with a dull song and get it played on every radio station and sold everywhere.

40% of the republican electorate want these leaders gone.

re: #341 freetoken

There is no end of “reality TV” in America, and one of the most popular are food shows, or rather food-porn shows, IMO.

I just watched the premiere of the most ridiculous reality show, so bad it’s good. Like watching a train wreck.

“I Want To Marry Harry.”

A bunch of American girls are in England, for something similar to the bachelor, with a lot of vague-but-misleading info about the guy in question. They’re at a Stately Home, everything’s very formal, the butler just refers to him as “Sir” (“you’ll be dining with Sir in the drawing room in 30 minutes”, “sir has provided these dresses for the masquerade ball,” etc) and the guy (who deflects when asked his name or what he does for a living or just about any other identifying info)… is a Prince Harry lookalike.

The girls are convincing themselves that IT”S REALLY HIM!! If they win the show they’ll be a PRINCESS!! I don’t know how they could possibly believe 4th in line to the throne would seek a spouse this way, but… like I said, trainwreck.

(I’m hoping the winner ends up being the one who realizes that hey, celebrity impersonater is a valid career, that somebody who’s going to be popular his whole life the impersonator can earn a decent living at it for decades. And he does seem like a nice guy, he’s just as goodlooking as the guy he’s lookalike for, his accent is adorbs…)

His reaction to the girls so far is hysterical. “American girls are very loud, aren’t they? And so forward.” With a facial expression and tone of voice that says, “OMG what a bunch of pushy gold-digging sluts!!”

That’s real? I saw the commercial and swore up and down it was a parody of reality shows. It would have to take a special level of stupid to think that a British prince born and raised in massive wealth, privilege, and protocol would go on a reality show to find a wife.

I hope that everyone involved with that is an actor knowingly sending up reality TV. If they think it’s real, I pity everyone involved for humiliating themselves that way.

GG appears before what looks like an all white audience in Amsterdam; he doesn’t “speak” until over 30 min into the tape. GG was sponsored by the Dutch “John Adams Institute” (“American Culture in the Netherlands”). Ironically, John Adams was the president who signed the Alien and Sedition Acts into law. john-adams.nl

Is Greenwald being over-hyped? Very few hits on the various Youtube offerings over there regarding him or what he has to say about Snowjob. I don’t think he has the influence he thinks he has, so why is the US press all over him? Because they’re becoming moribund and think GG’s criminal behavior and money-making is exciting or something?

So I’m amusing myself at 2am by going through the live primary thread at Free Republic. SO many examples of idiocy. I feel almost spoiled for choice.

My personal favorite was this comment about the GOP Senate primaries:

Yeah, genius. But almost 60% of the Republican electorate want those guys in power. That’s why they keep winning.

Math, how does it work?

Various Tea Party types took an absolute drubbing in yesterday’s primaries, which is a good thing. Maybe, just maybe…..that whole Tea Party movement is starting to run out of gas.

Well, with any luck, it is. They’ll be with us for awhile longer, to be sure, but it seems to me it’s largely made up of older people (60+) and as time passes and nature takes its course (i.e., death) their power will wane not just as a political force but as a social force as well.

There will always be atavists who yearn for a return to a mythical golden age, but hopefully, their numbers will diminish with time.

The way Prince Charles got to be in line… is because the one who supported Hitler was knocked out of the running by the rest of the family. (not the officially announced reason he got tossed, but if not for that they’d have put up with the rest of his shit).

Edward was a liability, and, as self-absorbed as he was, probably would have been a terrible king. I can’t imagine him staying in London after the bombings.

Yep…..Palin has become yesterday’s news - granted, she still tries to prove she’s a kingmaker in the GOP, but based on the results from various GOP primaries yesterday, her status as kingmaker is dubious at best.

Within a decade, she will be entirely forgotten, aside from her rabid base - she will become little more than a footnote in the history books.

That’s unfortunately true.

We shall have to wait to see what happens this November in the mid-terms, but I’m getting the feeling that it’s not going to be so good for the GOP, much less the Tea Party movement.

I’m still thinking the Democrats will retain the Senate, and the House will still be in GOP hands, though perhaps with a few less seats on the GOP side - the margin will be closer. Who ends up as Speaker when the next Congress begins I can’t guess.

There is one thing that could throw my calculation off, and that is comprehensive immigration reform, which is loathed by the GOP’s base. If the GOP passes that later this year, that could effect the November mid-terms as the GOP base, and especially the Tea Partyers, will be so furious that they’ll sit out the election out of sheer spite. These really are the types who’ll cut off their nose to spite their face; and should that happen, the Republicans may well be in big trouble come November.

Will the GOP leadership push forward for CIR? I don’t know, but they very well could - politics is a strange business, after all.

The most frustrating part of this is that the so-called “Lamestream Media” gives her any oxygen at all. She holds no office, hasn’t helped push anyone into office, makes absolutely no sense in anything she says, and isn’t running for anything.

For all intents and purposes, this should be the scene in a newsroom when Palin’s name comes up:

Reporter: Hey, boss, got a call from Sarah Palin’s publicist.

Editor: Who?

Reporter: Sarah Palin, VP candidate in 2008.

Editor: Right. That was six years ago.

Reporter: Yeah. Anyway, she’s making a statement about Benghazi on her Facebook page.

Editor: That’s nice.

Reporter: Wants to know if we want to interview her. Want me to run the story down?

Editor: Nah, who cares if some loser posts something on Facebook. Tell her to fuck off until she does something significant in politics. I don’t have time for this junior high bullshit. Not in so many words, of course.

I am really disheartened by the way most of these new “explanatory/data journalism” sites seem to be developing. vox.com and 538 especially. I never really figured Greenwald’s site to be anything other than a dudebro gathering place, but I thought Klein and Silver might do a better job turning their personal brand into a worthwhile product.

Instead, Silver’s site has been bitten by some huge data interpretation mistakes (like this one about kidnappings, and the climate change debacle a few weeks ago), and has a whole lot of fancy charts that are the equivalent of cotton candy.

And Klein’s site, when it isn’t engaging in trolling for clicks (bicyclists shouldn’t be required to wear helmets), comes up with headlines like “Everything you need to know about _x_” (See for example Everything you need to know about Nigeria’s kidnapped girls, which is a lot like the headline of a Gawker article published two weeks earlier: Here Is What You Need To Know About the Kidnapped Girls of Nigeria). There is no way a single explanatory article can tell me everything I need to know about _x_ story. Hyperbole in the service of journalism is no virtue.

Perhaps they will grow out of these start-up pains, but I am pessimistic. I think this points to the fact that just because someone has a sharp mind and a vision doesn’t mean that they have the necessary tool kit to implement that vision in a way that does it justice.

It seems they’re all chasing the Buzzfeed model in a slightly less listicle-tastic manner, which is a shame.

Edit: minor changes for clarification.

I would encourage anyone working in any position that requires a significant amount of standing to invest in arch supports early and often. I stand on my feet in a lecture hall for a couple of hours a day, along with miscellaneous walking to and fro, and having comfortable shoes that have extra support has saved my feet and my back.

And best to you JAH for finding a job. My former grandmother-in-law used to work at a laundromat/dry-cleaner. Those seem to be mostly locally owned (she worked the counter, taking money and providing change, picking up loose dryer sheets, etc.). Might be worth exploring.

Mayor of Mikolayiv Receives Dog’s Head with Grenade Stuffed Inside it in Parcel

Ukrainian news site Socialna Kraina reports that Yuri Granaturov, the acting mayor of Mikolayiv, received a parcel from an unknown sender today which contained the severed head of a dog, within which was a grenade. The Mikolayiv police department said that tests showed the grenade to be a fake.

Socialna Kraina provides this statement from the police (translated by The Interpreter):

“The police received a message from the attendant at the city council, saying that a parcel addressed to the acting mayor had arrived, from which came an unpleasant smell. An investigative team and an expert from the Interior Ministry’s regional forensics centre set out to establish all the circumstances at the scene. On opening the parcel, police officers discovered the remains of an animal’s head.”

Pay-to-potty: Teacher’s bathroom policy causes accidents, outrages parents

A Vancouver, Washington school district has removed a teacher while the school investigates claims that students wet their pants due to that teacher’s bathroom policy.

Third grade students at Mill Plain Elementary earn play money that they can exchange for treats, KIRO-TV reported. The money can be used to buy things like popcorn or small toys, but it is also used as a bathroom pass.

In two cases last week, children chose to spend money on treats instead of bathroom breaks, and wet themselves because they didn’t have enough money for a trip to the restroom, according to their parents.

…According to a follow-up katu.com report, trips to the bathroom under the policy cost $50 in fake money.

“What kid is going to spend money to go to the bathroom?” Merchon said. “No child should have to pay to use the restroom. Are you kidding me? That’s absolutely insane.”

I can explain at least why these sites get a lot of coverage in the media. Traditional news platforms have been in a revenue/subscriber death spiral for a while. The web, and now mobile, have accelerated that spiral. Journalists and media managers have been frantically trying to figure out how to reverse, or at least halt, that decline.

So when some of these Internet “rock star journalists” strike out on their own with a new buzzword, all the navel-gazers rush to see if they can discern some lessons they can take back and apply in their own corners of the journalism world.

As you said, ultimately, these sites are nothing earth-shattering, or even that groundbreaking. But it’s the shiny new toy that sparkles. In another year or two, they’ll be mostly forgotten, I imagine.

I was genuinely curious to see if Klein or Silver could bring something interesting, a bit different, to the table, based upon their past track records. Needless to say, it hasn’t gone that way.

“A rabbi, a little league coach, law enforcement and security officers and the mother of an infant are among 70 people arrested for allegedly sharing child pornography images online in what authorities are calling one of the largest local roundups of people who anonymously trade such images on the Internet, officials say.

(snip)

“Undercover Department of Homeland Security investigators along with NYPD detectives identified dozens of the suspects in about a month by setting up a website soliciting the sharing of illicit images.”

“We refer to each of these images as a crime scene photo because that’s exactly what they are,” said John Ryan, the organization’s chief executive officer.” More

Just because these jrrbs do not require an advanced degree does not mean they are blowoff or do not require hard physical labor.

So with the speed of lightening, the RWNJ have gone from demanding that everyone but them get jobs and bemoaning how Obamacare is destroying the Virtue of Work to ridiculing people working at the lowest wages.

Good to know, RWNJ, thanks.

The problem with RWNJ policies is they’re about keeping the very wealthy wealthy at the expense of everyone else. Want to pay for your education? Want a higher paying job? Want a livable environment for you and your family? Well tough luck because some wealthy dickbag supporter of the GOP needs a tax cut and tax cuts should take precedence over everything else.

Seriously. It just angers me that wingnuts think that this is about being anti-wealthy. To me, it’s about opposing a system that makes hard to make upward. A system that prefers tax cuts for its citizenry that don’t need it at the expense of others who would benefit if the government invested in them. Hell, I’d go even more radical and say it is them who oppose people being wealthy in that they only want policies that keep the already wealthy-wealthy.

Today is Day 3 of my using the commuter bus to work instead of the car/train combo I’ve been using for 15 years. I now have about a one mile drive to my bus pickup location, and they don’t charge for parking, which is a really big deal. Before I was driving about 18 miles to the train station. So am hoping to greatly reduce gas costs and reduce my aggravation with traffic, etc, as well.

The only draw back, or one of them, is the bus leaves earlier, so I have to get up a little earlier. But it’s finally become a trade-off I’m willing to make.

That’s my thinking as well. Demographics are changing pretty much everywhere, and that change will be more pronounced over the course of the coming decade.

By 2020/2024, even Texas might be purple, or even blue. If the GOP loses TX, they’re pretty much non-competitive as a national party unless they change their ways. Without TX, they’re going to end up confined to the Deep South and flyover country.

The people who have been gaga over vox confuse me. It’s just another media site, and as you say, it’s on the fluffy side, and yet credulous people are treating it as though it’s something new.

I really don’t get how people get continually hoodwinked by the media’s endless rebranding. Factchecking, explanatory journalism, yadda yadda: it’s all stuff that all journalism should be doing, and very few of the places claiming they’re doing any of it do it in any sort of consistent way.

It seems like its an endless appeal to the knee-jerk contrarians.

Good morning all!

Obdi…one of the things I think needs to be added to your comment about all the new media start ups is the great desire by people to want to be in on the newest ‘thing’ no matter what that thing is.

Of course there is nothing new about that particular human characteristic. It’s been called various things like “keeping up with the Joneses” or “flavor of the month” and others.

But it seems to be even more prevalent with the internet. Everyone wants to be in on the newest thing on the ‘net. And the whole speed of the internet seems to help feed it. News of something new travels faster than ever. How long did it really take for MySpace to go away in favor of Facebook?

Once something becomes big on the ‘net, those that found it first seem to see it as an offense that others are now taking part. So, off they go either looking for or creating something new.

The internet takes all of the standard human traits and hyper-speeds it all.
One of these days either the internet or the people will just blow up from trying to keep up with it all.

Here today. Gone today.

Well, those individuals are still pandering to the people who will be in nursing homes/in the ground in 10 years who make up the GOP base. Once the demographics of the country have shifted such that pandering to extremist rural whites is a guarantee of nothing but landslide defeat, these guys will either moderate (Rubio, Ryan, maybe Jindal) or see their political careers finished (Cruz, Paul).

A degree in Child Development. The church down the street has a day care and they want at least an Associates degree to work in their PreK and infants program. For 9 dollars an hour to start.

I could babysit here I guess, but I worry that people won’t like the fact I have a big dog. She’s as sweet as can be, but if I were looking for a sitter I’d worry too. Maybe doggie day care….I might put up a flier at the dog park and see what happens.

Rules and systems vary, but day care centers here have a caregiver hierarchy, with only the classroom teacher degreed. They have at least one layer of assistant with less certification. US Army follows a similar pattern, with a level of in-home care far more structured than babysitter. The Family Care providers get a good vetting and many hours of classes over a certification process.

That sums up my thinking on it as well. Once extremist rural whites diminish as a political force over the next decade or so, the smarter politicians will moderate their stances and those who don’t will see their political careers come to end.

Does anyone think that the Republican base is more hesitant to change than the Democratic one because of certain quirks that make one a conservative versus a liberal. In my observations, conservatives are more stuck in their way types, more likely to believe in doing things the way tehy’ve always been done while liberals tend to think the opposite. I think the latter explains why the Democrats did adapt after having some tough times in the 80’s. and while I think the Republicans struggle at least in national elections. The bigger thing that remains though is that as the country gets more diverse culturally, the better the Dems do and I think that’s something that the Republicans know and it scares the crap out of them which is why you see Gohmert like outbursts like we did yesterday where the imbecile said some crap about the immigration luring children to emigrate. I don’t know.

What right-wing war on women, etc.

As a genuine dude myself, the math is pretty simple. If she’s not sober, you don’t touch her. “Come back when you’re not drunk, and if you still want a piece of me then, I’ll be all for it.”

Alcohol affects judgement. Everyone knows this, it is well-understood science. Someone with impaired judgement is not to be trusted when it comes to something as intimate as sex. It isn’t hard to keep it in your pants when you know the drinks have been going around.

How simple can it be?

I think the GOP polarized itself into a corner. You go back to roughly the 80s and both parties were much broader and essentially had internal conservative and liberal wings. The GOP leaned conservative, but had moderates and even liberals by the definitions of the day. Complete nuts were marginalized by both parties for the most part.

Once the purges started based on party loyalty and purity towards selected policies they started down their current road.

Yeah and I think that gets to the liberal and conservative broader approach to change that goes beyond politics.

A friend back in the US, who I would describe as mildly conservative (she’s certainly not a wingnut) and with whom I’ve had friendly debates over the years once asked me, “How can you go live in another country where you don’t speak the language, know nothing about it, and you’re not scared? I’d be scared shitless - I’d never leave my apartment or house or whatever.”

I told her, “It’s no big deal to me. I view it as an adventure.”

Of course, she’s also had some fears of Muslims, and was stunned when she found out I’d become one. She was greatly relieved when my personality hadn’t changed. I’m still a huge smartass and my tastes haven’t changed over the years. I chalk that up to being 40 when I converted - almost five years ago - and falling in with a good group, specifically, the Naqshbandi-Haqqani school of Sufism, which is quite mild. Well, a little bit ‘monarchist’ for my political tastes - quite a few of the German Sufis I knew were indeed genuine monarchists - but I reckon no two people will ever see eye-to-eye on everything.

Kutsher’s is finally getting demolished, and it’s a rather sad ending to the illustrious history of the Catskills.

I remember seeing Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons there along with the Mommas and the Papas in the Starlight Lounge. Meeting NBA basketball players and WWF wrestlers there. First kiss/crush. Skiing. Skating. Partying. Playing bingo and trivia (and winning at both). Eating obnoxious amounts of food (if you were going to order breakfast, make sure you ordered the bagels and lox on the side; you’d get 1/2 pound of the good stuff).

Now, all there are wishful dreaming that a casino will somehow reinvent the Catskills and the tourism industry. And empty lots and piles of rubble where the comedy greats and Hollywood stars once roamed.

This is the sort of thing I keep in mind when exploring websites (or chains of them when people have multiple sites). There are myriad backgrounds and paths by which someone came from their birth to their current position and opinions. And even if they are snappish, defensive, and prone to chuck labels at people (especially in political disputes) I try to resist doing that in return. I suspect that very few people are completely stereotypical and that in civil conversation a lot of their complexities would come out.

Which I think is one reason I see people running hobby sites and also maintaining a separate site for politics or religion discussion.

Liberman: US has no right to tell Israel to investigate deaths of Palestinians

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Wednesday during a speech at Ariel University that he rejects the international community’s requests to investigate the killing of two Palestinian teenagers - allegedly by the IDF - during the May 15 Nakba Day riots by Ofer Prison near Ramallah.

“We don’t need an American demand to investigate what happened. The IDF is the most moral army in the world. I am sorry that such demands don’t come for other situations. In Syria, close to 170 thousand people have been killed and I haven’t seen any active response from the international community to investigate those deaths. Hamas kills Gazans without trials. I haven’t seen any requests from the international community regarding that,” the foreign minister said.

Liberman continued and questioned the authenticity of the videos. “Moreover, the video wasn’t released immediately, rather a few days later, and it raises questions.”

Sounds like another Pallywood propaganda video was created.

9/11 Museum, which sits on unidentified remains of attack victims, hosts alcohol-fueled party night before opening

On the eve of its grand opening to the public, the 9/11 Museum in lower Manhattan closed its doors to all but VIPs.

The sacred site that contains the remains of 1,115 unidentified victims became a private club for invited guests Tuesday night, sources told the Daily News — and some first responders were turned away during party preparations.

Former Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Condé Nast honchos were among those who nibbled crab cakes and shrimp cocktail hors d’oeuvres at the black tie affair, billed as a dedication ceremony, according to sources.

But one museum employee at the event, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described it as a festive affair.

“They were drinking, eating and laughing when this is pretty much a gravesite,” the employee said.

About 60 guests attended the soiree from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Information Desk on the museum’s lower level was converted into a bar for the night, the employee said.

re: #543 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

Avigor Lieberman is a wild extremist who cut off relations with the Mossad. Using him as a source is dubious. He’s also a fan of Putin.

He once suggested bombing Aswan Dam in retaliation for Egyptian support of Arafat.

As usual, you probably don’t actually know that much about the person you’re quoting, so you’re not intentionally citing a kook, but I figured you’d want to know.

I posted a story from the Jerusalem Post and I do agree with Lieberman on this. The claims of the IDF killing two teenagers is suspect at best. The US doesn’t need to be telling Israel what they need to be doing.

And a lot of the same people who are absolutely militant about our border being ultrasecure are going to be protesting that this guy got arrested for crossing a border with guns.

When driving to the USA/Canada border there are signs LAST EXIT BEFORE CANADA, BORDER CROSSING NEXT EXIT, FIREARMS MAY NOT BE BROUGHT INTO CANADA.

I am sure similar signage is posted at the other border.

Look, I’m no fan of the Museum and Foundation operations because they should have been turned over to the NPS for administration to make sure that access is free.

Instead, you’ve got a memorial foundation that needs fundraisers and ways to thank those who have donated to get it open. That’s going to include parties like this. That’s the reality of running a museum on the WTC site.

But if you think this was the only party or that there wont be parties elsewhere on the grounds of the WTC, you’d be mistaken.

What do you think will happen as the occupants start taking up residence in 1 and 4WTC? Conde Naste will have parties for their clients in and among the opulent offices they’ve got planned. So too will the businesses in 4WTC. Heck, 4WTC has been leased out for various social events already - there’s a rooftop deck that has been used for commercials and parties.

The whole of Ground Zero is a memorial and reminder of the 9/11 attacks. Rebuilding necessarily entailed building and bringing life back into the site.

The Memorial as I’ve noted is particularly moving for those that wish to see it in that way. It may end up being something different to other people years from now. The Museum is meant to make sure that the spirit of what happened on 9/11 and the memories of what happened will live on - and that means raising money to keep it going (in the absence of government at some level footing the tab).

My favorite part of traveling has always been trying to find places where locals go. I mean I don’t mind playing tourist because I obviously want to see the famous sites but at the same time, I love the idea of just having a beer with the locals.

I brought up Vienna because that’s a place where I did a lot of solo wandering, only knowing a smattering of German. I got coffee and lunch in places where the wait staff didn’t know a lick of English. It was fun.

My northern European genes made it very easy to mistake me for a local too. I had a group of cute young German tourist women come up to me to ask me for directions (in German). I heard “Grüß Gott” (a casual greeting common in Austria and Bavaria) and then didn’t understand a word of what they said afterward. I sheepishly asked “Sprechen sie Englisch?” which got a huge laugh. That was a fun moment too.

2014 has not been a good year for GM.

GM adds 218,000 subcompacts to growing recall list

The new recall, posted Wednesday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, covers Aveos from the 2004 through 2008 model years. The daytime running light module in the dashboard center stack can overheat, melt and catch fire. GM is aware of an unspecified number of fires due to the problem, but spokesman Alan Adler says it does not know of any injuries or deaths.

Avigdor Lieberman has said insane, foul things, like advocating mass civilian casualties in Egypt, the execution of fellow legislators. He is so extreme that he cut off relationships with the Mossad. He is more extreme than David Duke. But your response to being confronted with what a nutter he is is saying that even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I’m trying to get you to understand that when you do things like quote from nutjobs from Ace of Spades, or approvingly give LIebernman’s view on something, or repost yet another ginned-up fake story from the Daily Mail, you’re contributing to a problem that you claim to hate, the disintegration of the integrity of reporting and mass media. “Trojan Horse” investigations are now expanding to religious schools as well
Michael Gove calls for further schools investigations after Trojan Horse affair

Education secretary extends focus from allegations of Islamist plot involving state schools in Birmingham to other UK cities

Michael Gove has ordered snap investigations into Muslim schools in several cities around England, widening the focus outside of the so-called Trojan Horse allegations of an Islamist plot involving state schools in Birmingham.

At least five independent Muslim schools in Leicester, Bradford and Luton are said to have been visited by Ofsted inspectors at the request of the Department for Education in recent weeks, raising concerns among Muslim educators that they are being targeted in the wake of the Trojan Horse affair.

The snap inspections of the schools - including the Olive Tree primary school in Luton, which saw a confrontation between Ofsted staff and parents unhappy at the questioning of their children regarding homosexuality - appeared to be triggered by media reports of comments by head teachers or governors at the schools.

An inspection of the Alaqsa primary school in Leicester followed recent media reports of a booklet written 20 years previously by the school’s founder and head teacher, Ibrahim Hewitt, that detailed the punishments under Islamic law for adultery and acts of homosexuality.

You’re still pushing that?

I wouldn’t want to see any group pushing their particular brand of religion on students when they receive govt funding of any kind. When people want to push any religion, they should pay out of their own pocket and run the school honestly.

The rightwing is piling on Pres Obama being “weak” about the VA and some calling for Shinseki’s resignation.

Nevermind that this has been ongoing for a long time, even before his first election, and the fact that Republicans have consistently voted against funding for vets, many of whom are now victims of Iraq and Afghanistan with more to come.

And McCain, who should know better, piles on, too. IIRC, Pres Obama has been consistently concerned about changes to the VA and working toward those, only to be thwarted by the GOP.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on VA: ‘While I am glad that after many weeks of refusing to acknowledge this widening scandal, President Obama finally saw fit to speak about it today, but his remarks are wholly insufficient in addressing the fundamental, systemic problems plaguing our veterans’ health care system’ - @SenJohnMcCain

Do I, as a citizen, or anyone else, actually need to know everything about what’s done by govt? Or am I supposed to listen to those who blow all of it out of proportion and lie in the process?

Greenwald: Washington Post ‘suppressed’ foreign countries under NSA eavesdropping program

washingtonpost.com

Yet,

“As for the “elsewhere,” Greenwald and The Intercept go there, to a point. Here’s the big reveal of the story: “Documents show that the NSA has been generating intelligence reports from MYSTIC surveillance in the Bahamas, Mexico, Kenya, the Philippines and one other country, which The Intercept is not naming in response to specific, credible concerns that doing so could lead to increased violence. The more expansive full-take recording capability has been deployed in both the Bahamas and the unnamed country.”

So, Godwald & Co do the same as the WAPO, but because he made the decision, and the WAPO did so at the request of the Fed govt, it’s not the same?

It’s one thing to criticize govt, it’s another to actually think you should run its programs, and run them better, with only a fragment of facts.

Also…he lied and said it was his first time in Tijuana . It wasnt

SAN DIEGO.- Andrew Tahmooressi’s story has taken a recent turn, the ongoing investigation reveals that the former marine had visited Tijuana more than once before his arrest at Customs.

New information revealed through several media outlets — among them Zeta newspaper — confirms that Tahmooressi had been to Tijuana at least twice before his April 1 arrest; the data coincides with movement in his bank account. It is assumed that the ex-marine had crossed the border on foot for personal reasons. Some of his acquaintances confirmed this information to authorities investigating the case.

Another interesting detail to note are the declarations of Alejandro González Guilbot, chief of Mexican Customs in Tijuana, whose declarations do not coincide with Andrew Tahmooressi’s initial claims. “He never said that he was lost, he never informed us that he was carrying weapons, and he never said that he was a former member of the armed forces,” González stated. The Chief of Customs added that his agents initially detained the vehicle because it was lacking a front license plate, and upon inspecting the vehicle discovered the three loaded weapons — two of which are considered military grade in Mexico — and 400 pieces of ammunition. - See more at: sandiegored.com
