Live! At The Ryman was recorded live at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on 27 February 2016, except “Eva Waits” which was recorded on 8 December 2016 at the Big Room in Chico, CA.

This is a genuine “had to be there”…no fix ups…no frills recording. Each of my guitars has pickups and microphones that are included when you buy them, so the sound you hear from this recording is exactly as it sounds in the hall. Grab the new album Live! at the Ryman here wmbg.lnk.to

From the last thread:

re: #125 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis

Some of them are calling to burn all Liberal cities. These people are nuts. A threat to civilization.

And the cities are the engine of the economy of our nation. For most of my life it seems that more reactionary conservatives wouldn’t care how much they damaged themselves or their families, as long as they can stick it to a liberal.

How damn hard is it to see that the president of the United States is an egomaniac, a lunatic, a dangerous madman, and that his family is a collection of corrupt and vapid Eurotrash and Americrud? When will the freakin press stand up and say not only that the emperor has no clothes but that his dick is the size of a peanut?

A friend reported that a young cousin of hers posted on Facebook that after Trump serves 8 years, he will be recognized as one of the greatest Presidents of this nation. His supporters are like cult followers. They are brainwashed to see the invisible clothes. And the media is complicit in his rise to power.

yeah… the sad part is… not a damn thing that Colbert said is likely to be untrue, the GOP health care bill will indeed kill off loads of poor people, old people and everyday people just so others can get a tax cut. Which is more heinous? The comedian for pointing it out or the legislators working in “secret” crafting this abomination of a law without input from the people its likely to effect?

There’s a rather distinct difference between running silent and getting run over by an enemy destroyer in war-time and having a dry-goods carrier come down on your head in peace-time. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer has sensors and navigational aids that should have clued her in that she was about to get t-boned. Short of a total systems failure that rendered her blind, deaf, and dumb as a post, there’s no excuse for missing 40,000 tons of unstoppable force bearing down on you.

Well, there are other reasons (for example, if the commercial ship had turned into the Navy ship). From the audio, it appears the Navy vessel was making five knots. Getting up to speed or whatnot takes a couple minutes. A destroyer isn’t exactly a quick turning vessel either (well, in relation to a sailboat).

Despite all the sensors and such, that is also why they use watches on a vessel. I imagine the Navy is pouring over all the information they have to find out who screwed up and when (if there was a screw up).

If the Navy vessel was where it was supposed to be in the shipping lane and the commercial vessel wasn’t, the blame will still fall on the commercial shipping company (which wouldn’t necessarily absolve folk on the Navy vessel).

This is a rather unfair comparison, PT-109 was fogbound with zero visibility running silent during wartime without radar. An Arleigh Burke destroyer like the Fitzgerald can track over 100 targets simultaneously and engage them over the horizon, for it to get hit by a cargo tanker during normal peacetime operations is just barely less pathetic than running aground.

There’s a reason that naval tradition is that a ship’s captain is ultimately responsible for the conduct of those under his command. Even if the Crystal was miles outside of its lane, the Fitzgerald should have seen it coming with enough warning to get up to speed or ping the Crystal’s radio transponder and contact them. An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is equipped with radar, sonar, and SIGINT that should have seen the Crystal coming from 200 nautical miles away. It was the job of her crew to keep her out of the path of the Crystal and they failed. Whatever the ultimate reason for that turns out to be, the CO’s ass is cooked and he’ll be lucky if his superiors are satisfied with that.

However in the Straits of Hormuz, would they be running their radar systems like that? I don’t know either the Navy’s protocols or shipping protocols for that. Plus, they would be right next to Iran, where they might not want to give up signals intelligence to the Iranians.

Hence, the idea the Navy will look at all this.

Where’d you get the Straits of Hormuz from? This collision happened out off the coast of Japan.

And regardless of how it happened and whose fault it was… if we had a proper functioning government, there would be a Secretary of the Navy and an Ambassador to Japan to do all the crisis management crap that immediately needs doing. Instead of leaving it in the hands of an interim assistant undersecretary 3 layers down on the organizational chart, who probably doesn’t have the experience and training to do it right, who might not even have the authority.

My understanding is the bill has a rocky future in the House. And Russian sanctions if they got to Trump’s desk would likely cause him to blow a gasket. (That might be where some of the House opposition comes from, but I don’t know. Those guys in the GOP caucus can’t agree on a lunch date.)

It turns out that “chocolate milk from brown cows” comes from an on-line poll. My guess is the troll factor on that poll went way up from such a dingbat question.

Everyone knows that chocolate milk comes from mixing the milk of brown and white cows. Straight from a brown cow you get chocolate sauce.

And you make chocolate milk by adding cocoa powder to cattle feed. That’s why we import so much cocoa on the High Plains. /s

How a Brit sees his recent election, and America:

The Choice Was Real

[…]

Powerful elected city mayors have become a part of the political landscape. Sadiq Khan was an important figure in this election and so was Andy Burnham. The two terrorist attacks happened to take place in cities with Labour mayors and both acquitted themselves well. Trump’s ludicrous attacks on Khan and May’s half-hearted defence of him may have fuelled anti-American sentiment among some Labour voters. But Khan’s enhanced standing is still part of the Americanisation of British politics. London and Manchester are, more than ever, solidly Labour cities and represent independent power bases for ambitious national politicians. The same is true of Scotland, which has provided a platform for Ruth Davidson to assert her authority against the Tory leadership without even having to stand for Parliament. The return of national politics in Britain has not made regional differences less important. One huge headache for the Conservative Party is how to reconcile Davidson’s liberal wing with the ideas of their new friends in the DUP. There are cultural divides here that echo the sound and fury of politics across the Atlantic. With the DUP set to prop up the government, we will have to reckon with attitudes to abortion becoming a faultline in British politics. The DUP also bring creationism and climate denial to the table. What could be more American than that?

[…]

A friend reported that a young cousin of hers posted on Facebook that after Trump serves 8 years, he will be recognized as one of the greatest Presidents of this nation. His supporters are like cult followers. They are brainwashed to see the invisible clothes. And the media is complicit in his rise to power.

My father once had a conversation with a German WW2 veteran who noted that the same thing would have been said about Hitler if it wasn’t for the whole “starting a war” thing.

I’ve said before, if the Republic survives another three decades, we’re going to have to push back against these kids re-writing history or at the very least, trying to make Trump look normal. “Oh he wasn’t so bad…”

Trump is making GWB look good - someone could come along in 30 years & do the same for Trump (and what a nightmare that would be for the next generation).

In The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, William Shirer noted that had Hitler stopped after the German victory in France, he probably would’ve gone down in history as one of the greatest adventurer/conquerors of all time.

How a Brit sees his recent election, and America:

The Choice Was Real

Still misses the elephant in the room: Neither the Tories nor Labour have any coherent Brexit strategy to speak of. They are just kicking the can down the road, to the detriment of the country.

Talks start on Monday. Lord Buckethead was right; this is a shit show.

This analysis, which was written about a year ago, has aged very well even past the recent election:
The answer to the Brexit Paradox is…The EU

Contrary to the doubts many people seem to have about this, I’m pretty sure article 50 can be revoked and that the EU would be more than happy to do just that at any time before the 2-year countdown ends. The question is, is there anyone in UK politics brave enough to do just that and be willing to absorb the blame?

The Trumpers are still in awe of Trump.

Has the GOP gone too far with Trump? Not according to the Trumpers.

I guess at my age I’ve concluded that things can go on for a lot longer than I had expected when I was younger.

As a nation-state we can probably bumble along for quite some time. We can probably make an argument that with the election of Reagan the US started down an atavistic path that has not been reversed. At best Obama was a pause. But as we see with the new new Cuba policy, what Obama hath done Trump can undo.

Same with the Paris accord.

This was the problem with Obama’s 8 years - too much of the positive change was only a surface paint of executive privilege. The reason the ACA has been so hard to undo is because it is an actual law, not an executive decision.

I suspect Obama knowing that the GOP would try to erase a lot of his legacy attempted to codify a lot of his change into law via legislation rather than EOs. I’ll agree with you that the start of this begins with Reagan.

I believe it. To me, I think as you say things started changing around LBJ because too many whites realized they would have to share aka pay taxes for minorities to benefit from the same programs they did. Despite what people like Bernie Sanders say, that’s why we started losing a lot of the white working class. There’s always been people that were against those programs but the hostility to them among the masses didn’t really start until LBJ through the Great Society stated that all Americans regardless of skin color should be able to benefit from them without discrimination and man Nixon and later Reagan and now Trump perfected that resentment.

Apparently, the Grenfell Tower Fire has caused another firestorm- of protest - in London: people are seriously pissed off at the “authorities”: both for the issues that caused the fire in the first place, and for what they see as inadequate responses afterward.

Mrs. May is fortunate (if that word can be applied) that the fire didn’t happen before the election: David Cameron’s idiotic comments about “killing the health and safety culture” are being given unfortunate (for the Tories) amounts of publicity, and, more ominously for May, her reactions to the fire are getting the gold-standard comparison for official neglect:

The wild scene at Friday’s performance was captured in videos posted to Twitter, including one by the protester in the audience ― Jack Posobiec, a Trump fan and “Pizzagate” conspiracy theorist.

In last night’s storming of the stage at the Julius Caeser play, this wingnut was on hand to record it, yelling “You are all Nazis like Joseph Goebbels” ― a reference to Adolf Hitler’s minister of propaganda. “This is all Goebbels. You are inciting terrorists. Goebbels would be proud. You are Nazis.”

The woman who stormed it is from the sober and measured Canadian outlet Rebel Media, a woman named Laura Loomer.

They were both arrested for trespassing and disorderly conduct, to which Mr. Posobiec noted was a strange charge since it was a public park (the trespassing charge).

In the fine tradition of right-wing Wingnut Welfare, Ms. Loomer has set up a “legal defence fund” to get money from this.

Between the Castile thing, and the Cosby thing, and the Julius Caesar thing, and the Senate GOP’s incredibly anti-American secrecy in drafting and preparing to pass a bill to take insurance away from the most vulnerable to give more money to the most privileged, and the apparent willingness of the GOP to accept any level of blatant corruption from Trump, just to hurt poor people and help those who need it least.

And then, so many times when you try to point out this entirely asymmetrical situation, you’re hit with ‘both sides do it’.

How do we win against this combination of cruelty and corruption in the face of the apathy and facile ‘plague on both your houses’ attitude of so many in the middle?

Yep I see the “Both sides” shit a lot in a attempt to morally justify the right’s bullshit and it’s just such utter shit.

This is the problem I have - the asymmetry is pretty goddam obvious, but it’s SO EASY to just fall back on “both sides do it!” There was a tweet this week that just about made my head explode. Someone was describing the secrecy involved in McConnell’s healthcare push - no hearings, no debate, planning to ram it through on a simple majority vote.

Someone tweeted that this is exactly what the GOP said the Democrats did, completely ignoring the REALITY that the Democrats did the whole thing in a very public way, that what was happening was in the news the whole time, that there were hearings and debate and Republicans were allowed to offer amendment after amendment, many of which were adopted.

No, that reality DIDN’T MATTER. What was important was that the GOP had accused the Democrats of what the Dems were now saying the GOP is doing. So both sides are bad.

I look at the racist right, and I think, like Theoden, “What can men do against such reckless hate?”

But then I look at the middle, and I think, “What can men do against such facile apathy?”

Theresa May bundled into a car by police after exiting a side door from a church in Kensington being used as support for the fire victims.

The crowd was protesting and shouting at her.

Theresa May has left a church, which is in use as a support hub for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, through a side door to chants of “coward” and “shame on you”.

The Prime Minister had been meeting victims, residents and volunteers at St Clement’s Church in north Kensington, after she was accused of failing to show “humility” when she refused to meet locals during a visit the day before.

Witnesses described Ms May being bundled into a car by police amid “fury from the pushing crowd,” less than an hour after protests erupted outside Kensington town hall close by.

It’s popular because it’s easy. Unearthing the facts takes effort. Too many people fall into the belief that ‘the truth is in the middle’. That may have been true once, but not anymore.

I firmly believe that one of the biggest reasons why Obama doesn’t get the respect he deserves is that the financial crisis happened too close to his inauguration, and was handled too well.

FDR had the ‘advantage’ of 2 years of GOP policies failing while America drifted into a deep depression, for which Conservative policies had no remedy. The 2008-2009 crisis was far more dangerous than most people realize or remember, and the resulting slow growth seems anemic compared to other, less potentially catastrophic recessions.

Moreover, it’s not like issues of racism need to take a back seat on the damn bus while we work on problems of income inequality and jobs. We are capable of doing more than one thing at a time.

The idea that “well, you people already waited four hundred years for justice, sit back for a few more while we deal with the so-called white working class” at best is simplistic and continues racism.

A lot of poor WWC in the XIX Century were racists. A lot of poor WWC people in the XX Century were racists. A lot of poor WWC people now are racists. Maybe we ought to be working on the racism problem, just a thought.

No, seriously! Jack Posobiec Tweeted yesterday that he was going to put on the Salem Witch Trials play, and burn Hillary Clinton at the stake, as if somehow the play (The Crucible, actually) glorifies the witch hunters.

It was actually the perfect example of the Right’s lack of reading and thinking!

Making The Crucible about Hillary Clinton being witch hunted (not sure how you’d do that, exactly) would portray her as the victim of stupid, superstitious people. Sounds about right.

Trump advisers and confidants describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets in the White House carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy to discredit — and potentially end — his presidency. Some of his ire is aimed at Rosenstein and investigative special counsel Robert Mueller, both of whom the president believes are biased against him, associates say.

Oh, fuck you, Queeg. You made your own enemies here by believing becoming president would give you carte blanche to break all the laws.

Much effort being placed beefing up grassroots activism. Local clubs being dusted off and invigorated.
I was surprised to see protesters as I drove up to the venue. THEY WERE BERNIEBOTS.
Sander was out there talking to them. Could you believe, they were on his back about “Medicare for All” and single payer insurance. They were acting as though Sander was the enemy. We are barely keeping the Republic together and the Rs control all branches of government, yet the Bernians are deeply upset still that they cannot get their ponies.

I don’t know if there is any actual winning that can be done. All I can think of as to what will turn the tides in this country is a reeducation of civics, sociology and government.

Our citizens have no clue how government works, they got too used to it being there with no idea how it got to where it is. They counted on it because they must have thought they deserved it, it came with being born a member of this country.

They are going to find out the hard way how government works by seeing how it can work against them. Big lessons coming.

But the biggie is what always motivated humans: needs.

People apparently require a lot of stuff they need taken from them before they realize they needed it. Once it is gone they will wonder where it went and then get to finding out how to get it back. Big lessons coming.

The day is coming when a lot of people are going to find they screwed themselves by being ignorant of government, civics and sociology. They will slowly find how all that stuff conservatives told them don’t need really was needed.

They may also find the money that paid for their needs is now in the accounts of the very people that told them they didn’t need all that taxation, healthcare, environmental regulations, education, policing, etc. Big lessons coming.

I read a great article on Buzzfeed not long after the election from an Arab-American young woman from Scranton-Wilkes Barre about what people who aren’t WWC go through in these towns. I really think a lot of white American liberals take a romantic image of the WWC since it’s why so many of their families entered the left in the first place. For my mom’s side, immigrants and the children of them, it certainly was. The New Deal is why my grandparents and their siblings and parents became Democrats. However, many of those same people did exhibit racist behavior too. My Mom can remember her father being upset at her playing with black children. Now, he did get better as he got older but you’re absolutely right. And personally I find Sanders attitude, a man who represents a state with fewer black people than my home county dismissive when it comes to regions with large numbers of African-Americans. I still remember him shruggign off his loss in SC as “Well the South is quite Republican”, why yes it is Bernie but you were fine with your big wins in equally Republican states. Our next party nominee needs to be someone who is either a minority themselves or has a lot of experience representing them. It definitely should not be 80 year old Bernie Sanders from the 95%+ white state of Vermont.

lawhawk  Jun 17, 2017 • 10:05:30am

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area. Scattered storms are all about, but the weather isn’t what’s bothering me.

It’s the fact that Trump thinks that his corruption is above the law.
It’s the fact that the GOP still enables him despite a growing pile of evidence showing him and his cronies are up to their eyeballs in Russian corruption.

There’s the perjury.
There’s the obstruction of justice.
There’s the threat of still more obstruction of justice, and what does the GOP and Trump do? They send out Newt fuckin’ Gingrich to claim that the president can’t engage in obstruction of justice? That’s the same Newt fuckin’ Gingrich who called for impeachment - high crimes and misdemeanors because Clinton lied about having an affair. Highly improper activities to be sure, but if we’re going to call that obstruction of justice, what the fuck do you call firing the FBI director for not stopping the investigation, making threats against key natsec officials to try and get them to stop investigations, and to lie/obfuscate about his role and the roles of all the people operating at his behest during the campaign, after winning in November, and through inauguration who contacted Russians and lied about it.

It’s not just one guy.

Kushner.
Sessions.
Flynn. Flynn was fired. Sessions committed perjury in his testimony before Congress during his nomination. Kushner lied on his security clearance forms, which is also perjury. That’s firing offenses, and yet Trump and the GOP have taken no steps on either.

Trump belatedly fired Flynn, but still sought to speak with him after the firing. Again, that goes to interfering with federal investigations.

These investigations will continue because the scope of the criminality is so vast and it takes time to sort through all the witnesses and evidence. After all, we’re still watching Trumpworld lawyering up - to the point where Trump’s lawyers are themselves getting lawyers.

Pence lawyered up (all while claiming that this is normal). It’s not normal for everyone in the Trump admin to need lawyers less than 6 months in to the administration for high crimes and misdemeanors that would be classified as seditious acts, obstruction of justice, and more.

So, when you read reports about how some of the GOP are splitting with Trump on his Cuba actions, they wont change their position. They’ll still back him. They’ll still block further investigations, and they’ll enable him.

I can’t go that far but I do think Sanders is a lot more flawed than his supporters will ever admit. He has a huge blind spot to what minorities go through and he makes it worse when he tells minority voters to stop engaging in identity politics. The thing is he’s doing the same thing talking about the WWC’s plight.

Here’s what makes the Democratic Party so wonderful and inclusive to me. It has a place for a college educated white guy such as myself, many African-Americans including those who remember Jim Crow, women, immigrants, LGBT people, etc. I’ve said it before but I’d much rather have a socially liberal business type in my party than a working class person threatened by minorities and LGBT people.

We need every voter we can get. 80,000. And it was easier back in 2016.

And as long as I’m bitching about everything else, here’s something else that grinds my gears:

Coolaroo shades are great for our house, because they reflect a lot of the light that would otherwise increase our heat load on hot days. They’re designed to for sunny places. So, why is the plastic in the clips that hold the chain to keep it from clattering against the house when it’s windy SO susceptible to UV degradation?

Our Coolaroos are in great shape, but the clips are all broken and they all broke because of UV damage from sunlight. You’d think the company might have thought of that, what with their product being designed for sunny climates, BUT NO!

Check last year’s Dem platform and the stated goals of various progressive groups like MoveOn or OFA. See the priority placed on real labor issues like union breaking, minimum wage, and workplace safety & health. Organized workers like SEIU are still the heavy lifters in the large states, and they’re looking second-class. And they’re not lilly-white.

It’s all about Us and Them. Here’s a fascinating factoid I just read: Oxytocin makes people all cuddly and cooperative with others-as long as they are members of “Us.” It makes people harsher towards those who are “Them.”
Also, “Them” being hurt can make people feel good.

I keep coming back to the same answer - stupidity. So many in the WWC are anti-Union, oppose raising the minimum wage, oppose any form of ‘socialized medicine’. I mean, we joke about the Teabagger, the Union guy, and the CEO (“That union guy wants your cookie!”), but being objectively pro-worker has not helped us with a lot of the WWC, and being objectively anti-worker has not hurt the GOP.

It’s popular because it’s easy. Unearthing the facts takes effort. Too many people fall into the belief that ‘the truth is in the middle’. That may have been true once, but not anymore.

The problem is people prefer Truth™ to wisdom.

Truth™ is true, good and never changes.

Wisdom requires constant checking of motivation, goals and results. It’s way too much work of a type most people don’t much care for. They are willing to break their backs but not their minds.

Much effort being placed beefing up grassroots activism. Local clubs being dusted off and invigorated.

Sander was out there talking to them. Could you believe, they were on his back about “Medicare for All” and single payer insurance. They were acting as though Sander was the enemy. If Trump’s success has proved anything, it’s that it’s not really about ideology. I think the better way to look at ‘social conservatism’ is less as conservatism and more as the preservation of privilege and position.

Example - Homosexuality, especially male homosexuality, makes a lot of straight people uncomfortable, even downright queasy. The thing about privilege is that you think you shouldn’t be required to accept that which makes you uncomfortable. So, you say, “It’s WRONG! It’s UNNATURAL! It’s EVIL!!”, and if one political side supports equality for gays, they must be BAD!

Goes for everything. People with privilege don’t think they should have to put up with lots of Those People moving into their towns, having to press 1 for English, etc.

re: #268 Birth Control Works

How does that work when many Jews are white? Diaspora -intermarriage, etc.

It’s an old canard - even Hitler referenced in Mein Kampf.

TL;DR - the Jews promote interracial marriage or race mixing in order to destroy white people as a race while they themselves don’t marry or have kids outside of other Jewish folks, thereby keeping themselves “pure”.

It’s old, stale bullshit.

Let’s not go too far. A cultural solution can work. We don’t need to mess around with biology, nor evolution, for that matter.

I THINK that over a long period of time, the cultural solution will change biology. Actually, I know this from reading. Behavior does change biology. We have to find a way to tweek Natural Selection to less specialized male.

Education Dept. Says It Will Scale Back Civil Rights Investigations

WASHINGTON — The Department of Education is scaling back investigations into civil rights violations at the nation’s public schools and universities, easing off mandates imposed by the Obama administration that the new leadership says have bogged down the agency.

According to an internal memo issued by Candice E. Jackson, the acting head of the department’s office for civil rights, requirements that investigators broaden their inquiries to identify systemic issues and whole classes of victims will be scaled back. Also, regional offices will no longer be required to alert department officials in Washington of all highly sensitive complaints on issues such as the disproportionate disciplining of minority students and the mishandling of sexual assaults on college campuses.

The new directives are the first steps taken under Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to reshape her agency’s approach to civil rights enforcement, which was bolstered while President Barack Obama was in office. The efforts during Mr. Obama’s administration resulted in far-reaching investigations and resolutions that required schools and colleges to overhaul policies addressing a number of civil rights concerns.

Had a few, but we are expecting an infestation of a moth that usually does an early kill-off. Already getting more tomatoes of all kinds than we consume, as well as eggplant and pepper varieties. Getting very fond of a Marconi pepper that yields a flat 3X10 inch veggie. We split them into a ‘taco’ shape, stuff and grill.

My tomatoes are all green still but I’m going to have way more than normal. I didn’t even plant but one - all the rest are from fruit that I never harvested last year that took off on their own. The cucumbers are happily vining and competing with the one tomato plant I did buy for supremacy over the big pot. I can’t tell who’s winning. (The damn zucchini is triumphing over the bell pepper plant, although maybe the pepper is doing better now that I cut off the early fruit in an attempt to encourage growth.)

I desperately wish I had a real garden instead of my collection of pots but there were reasons. Sigh.

It’s all a Jewish plot.

Well, God did create Heaven and Earth. Our idea of God originates with the Hebrew people.

So, logically, it is all a Jewish plot. //////

Note how useless logic can be when the premises are stupid.

Amazing to me that anti-fascist is now a term for the bad guys.

Not the first time.

In the 50s many people lost their jobs because they had fought on the Loyalist side during The Spanish Civil War. The term for them was “premature anti-fascists”.

Do you have a photo of that? I’m not visualizing the grow tube, and it sounds like something I could use here!

Did a page on it a long while back—looking for it now.

Those photos are before the move to all-container. The basic house was 10X30’ , made of 1/2 inch PVC pipe, covered with 20X50’ of 6 mil construction vinyl. Cost of the ribbing was about $60, the cover $50 with a 2-3 winter life. The piping has lasted about 15 yrs. In summer it supports critter-proof netting.
