Sunday Night Funk: George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Jan. 24, 2018 | Abby O’Neill — The rhythm of family has been a constant thread throughout P-Funk’s long lineage and the myriad iterations the band has undergone in its 50-plus years. From The Parliaments to Funkadelic to Parliament Funkadelic to the P-Funk All Stars, George Clinton has conducted the mothership as a reliable father figure. When he commands you to “put a glide in your stride and a dip in your hip, and come on up to the Mothership,” he’s presenting to you the first law of Funktonian physics. We at NPR pledged our groovellegiance when he and his P-Funk All Stars touched down to bless the Tiny Desk.

Clinton has brought his own bloodline into the most recent lineup of P-Funk: His grandchildren are the newest backup singers, while another grandchild serves as tour manager. Though this was a much smaller outfit than their traditional stage shows — no horn section, no dancers, no Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk — the extended family was also in full effect. Garrett Shider on rhythm guitar, filling in for his late father, Garry Shider, aka Starchild. Even original trumpeter Bennie Cowan, who still tours with the group but didn’t make it to the Tiny Desk, typically plays alongside his son Benzel on drums. Blackbyrd McKnight and Lige Curry cement the foundation as elder statesmen who’ve been rocking with Clinton since 1978.

Indeed, the funk father refuses to let the musicianship slip — the band was as sonically tight as ever, blessing us with a canonical three-song set list of classic jams. P-Funk’s influence shaped ’90s hip-hop and culture immeasurably; without Clinton, we’d have no NWA, no G-funk, no Tupac, no EPMD, no Ice Cube… and, of course, no one’s forgotten about Dre. Clinton and P-Funk brought world class funksmanship, and it was our pleasure to air the room out and squeegee the floors after soaking up their cosmic slop.

“Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On”

“One Nation Under A Groove”

“Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)”

By the way, I’ve run into George a few times in Austin over the years and the man has a funk that follows him around that is just overwhelming. Room clearing.

Hell of a musician, though.

I wonder why people think they’re contemptible? Oh, wait, they embrace that kind of racist garbage and feed it to their ignorant as fuck readers to gain click bait and profit.

Do you ever wonder if their ignorant readers understand they are being used as food?

Muslims can touch a pigskin in the case of need, they just can’t eat it or pray in it. For example, it is permissable for a Muslim doctor or nurse to remove a patient’s pigskin clothing or shoes in order to treat them. A Muslim policeman may open a pigskin wallet while looking for identification or other documents.

I always try to find out if something is factually true if I post it hence why I don’t post a bunch of political stuff in mass. I did have to correct my left leaning uncle on one matter and to his credit, he acknowledged his error but the few times I’ve called out conservatives using impartial sources, I get noise about how Snopes is liberal propaganda and I’m thinking to myself dude you’re posting stuff from Ben Shapiro or someone else with a blatant right wing agenda. The couple who run Snopes call out falsehoods and the wife was a registered Republican at one point.

There’s a scene in an old Schwarzenegger movie called End of Days where the devil, played by Gabriel Byrne, walks into a church to mess things up.

One of the Priests holds up a cross to try and stop him but he’s all like “haha, that’s fucking funny” and promptly stabs the guy through the forehead with it.

“LOL (I got stuck at the end of the last thread):…”

I didn’t understand their point when I was growing up, but when I left home, went to college, and got out into the world, I understood why my mom and dad placed so much emphasis on teaching me to not let others define me. I read the kind of BS RW media puts out and laugh. I probably pissed off some of my so-called former co-workers that identify as conservative the other day. I read a post in which some RW Caucasian politician said he felt “uncomfortable” around certain persons in America. He was pushing Trump’s form of anti-immigration BS, racism, bigotry, etc. I posted the article on Facebook and wrote: “This guy’s heritage is probably Irish, and he doesn’t seem to know that when his ancestors arrived in America, they weren’t accepted at first. I added: I’m probably one of those Americans he feels “uncomfortable” being around, but he doesn’t have to worry about me trying to take anything away from him because I have my own sh*t. Lots of people think they know me, but they really don’t. My parents also taught me not to tell others all of my business, thoughts, and feelings which is the reason some think they know me when they don’t. I always keep certain things to myself.

By the way, that comment I made in the last thread is absolutely true. The Railroad Commission made sure that any groundwater used in oil and gas production wasn’t regulated under the Texas Water Code. They can suck as much water out of the ground as they need and it can’t be regulated by any Groundwater Conservation District in the State. Any town in the Permian Basin is screwed, blued, and tattooed. Expect water refugees to be moving to Weatherford and Austin in the near future because their wells will be as dry as a bone in the next five years.

You already know but I’m really into my Irish ancestry which is part of why I’m sympathetic towards newcomers. My one third great grandmother was an Irish speaker and famine survivor. Why shouldn’t I be welcoming as I’m sure she wanted to be.

Lubbock’s water situation is already perilous, private wells are running dry in and around town and little is being done about it. The primary surface source, Lake Alan Henry, has only been online 5 years and is already drying up. It consistently fails to provide the required volume and city planning pays no heed to the possibility of climate change making the situation worse. This forces continued use of groundwater, with predicted depletion rates that take no account of frakking use and that also use replenishment estimates that ignore climate change. They claim they are good for 40 years. I think it’s more like 10 and may be even less with a really severe drought event.

When did standing at bars for the National Anthem before sporting events become a thing?
I was at my neighborhood bar with my buddies (who like me are vets) and noticed some people were standing. Others were sitting with their hands over their hearts. We all agreed this was all politically motivated because until recently we had never seen people doing this, we all agreed that the real reason people are doing this has racial undertones. And I said forced patriotism is not patriotism.
And if anybody wanted to question my loyalty to my county because i wasn’t standing at attention, i would ask them if they served their country like I did, if not, stfu.

Agreed, and in addition, the other surface reservoir, Lake Meredith on the Canadian River, is basically unusable. The combination of fracking water, irrigation, and climate change drought is turning West Texas into a human desert (it has been an actual desert for quite a while, but reservoirs and groundwater has made it habitable). The crisis is upon all of that population whether they realize it or not.

They may not believe in climate change, but Mother Nature doesn’t give a fuck. All of their investments in their homes, communities, infrastructure, industry, and cities isn’t worth a rat’s ass without potable water.

They’re fucked, and they are going to have to abandon all of it.

I was a SAC pilot for three years and spent one week out of three in a facility in the upper peninsula of Michigan full of people who would run out to out to our planes, take off, and sling nuclear devastation upon the Godless Commies.

One of our BUFFs, if used in the US, could make a run with our standard payload (four 1.3 MT gravity bombs and eight 210 KT Short Range Attack Missiles on an internal rotary revolver) from Atlanta to Boston and kill +/- 35 million people. Before fallout affects.

There might be an even bigger joke. I believe the person Ryan described was a school secretary. That $1.50 is likely to cost her future pay increases or even her job when the Republicans cut/freeze federal funding for schools in order shrink the deficit expansion they’ve caused.

People are going to see private expenses increase across the board as governments at all levels scramble to cut programs and benefits that aid middle and low-income earners and their families.

Blue October - “I Hope You’re Happy” Official Lyric Video

I remember when the world was ours to take
I remember you next to me
I remember you with every breath I take
You’ll always have a piece of me
I remember, yeah
Try to remember that

I remember every word that we spoke
You right here next to me
I remember how we tried and we tried
I remember everything
Try to remember that
That I hope you’re happy
That I hope you’re happy

Bonds on a bind, inflation worries, yada, yada, yada, market watch is on today.

While the Philadelphia Eagles were busy beating the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, stocks in Asia slid sharply Monday morning, extending steep declines late last week in European and U.S. markets, including Friday’s 666-point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. U.S. stock futures point to another lower open for Wall Street on Monday.

Meanwhile, a key measure of market choppiness—the Cboe Volatility Index, known as the VIX—surged 55% last week to 17.16, although it remains below its long-term average of around 20. The index is a gauge of expected stock swings based on S&P 500 options prices.

The surprise selloffs, accompanied by sharp rises in U.S. bond yields, could mean that overheated markets will finally start to cool. Most major global indexes haven’t suffered corrections, defined as a 10% fall from recent highs, in at least two years.

Football is more than a sport to these people, it is a repository and showcase for American Values.

I have not given a hoot about a football game since the 1968 literally 50 years, when my tow favorite teams as skid, the Packers and the Jets were playing: it was a win-win situation for me. I admired both Johnny Unitas as the old-school solid QB and Joe Namath as the cool, hip newcomer although I guess my heart was still with the Jets.

I can stand back and look at professional sports as a business and a form of entertainment. Competition, striving for excellence and fair play are fine ideals that belong in any endeavor, but I see them as nothing that is more special or unique because they are part of sports league play.

Some of the Asian market slide could be due to the Chinese New Year coming up in another 10 days or so. Individuals will be taking profits to fund those holiday feasts and the “lucky money” given to kids. I’m not sure if Asian firms use fiscal years pegged to the lunar calendar or the common one, so can’t say if they also make decisions based on the end of the lunar year.

Of course, the DJIA and NASDAQ aren’t doing so hot, so that’s another big effect on the Asian markets.

People may have been turned off by the stories of CTE and other serious injuries. And not just that.

A couple weeks ago I saw a report about Aaron Hernandez’s head trauma. They showed his brain scans. It’s horrifying. He had been playing since middle school, his brain was shrunken and whole sections were destroyed. I cried when I saw that. If I had a son who loved football, I just don’t think I could support his playing. Not knowing what I know. And maybe people are just sick of all of it. The injuries, treating players like royalty and letting them get away with shitty things, the crappy tax deals for stadiums and the insane ticket prices, all of it.

By the way, that comment I made in the last thread is absolutely true. They can suck as much water out of the ground as they need and it can’t be regulated by any Groundwater Conservation District in the State.

Hell most people I know have always used the anthem as time for a quick piss or to get something else to eat or drink. BTW, it’s fairly new that is within the last 8 years that NFL players have been standing, in the past they were in the locker room while the anthem played and what’s more is the guy who suggested that Colin K kneel is a former Green Beret turned NFL player. But you won’t read that on Breitbart because Breitbart has an agenda to get their baby readers outraged rather than to listen about why these guys are kneeling.

Oh yeah for sure. I’m just saying that even conservatives when the game is being played at a home or a bar aren’t exactly being gung ho patriotic during the national anthem. I always stand when I’m actually present for a game but I’ve never seen these people rage at people who buying concessions when the anthem is playing but then again they’re not black athletes making them uncomfortable and conservatives hate being uncomfortable with reality.

re: #86 JordanRules

Gotta love this. Trump statement about universal health care:

Nigel Farage, the Trump-supporting British politician, had appeared on the show to execute a two-pronged attack on the National Health Service and immigration:

“Well the big problem we’ve got is a population crisis caused by government policy on immigration,” Farage said. […]

“The National Health Service has turned into the International Health Service and we’re providing a lot of healthcare for people coming into Britain from all over the world. We do need some absolutely fundamental reforms. This system we have was set up in 1948. Surprisingly for a state-run thing for most of the first fifty years the public had great faith in it. Right now it’s pretty much at breaking point.”

Farage was attempting a sophisticated dual move, using the NHS to show that Britain can’t afford immigrants and using the underfunding of the NHS to argue that the system is doomed rather than in need of support. And there’s reason to believe Farage was a little too complex, because faced with this take, Trump went after universal health care rather than after immigration, despite Trump’s general hatred of immigrants and the fact that the U.S. does not have a national health service to attack.

The other problem here, of course, is that the thousands of people marching in the U.K. over health care are angry about underfunding of the NHS by the conservative government, not about it being “really bad and non-personal medical care.” They like it! They want more of it! And they’re not blaming immigrants. Not that you’d know that from watching Fox & Friends, let alone reading Trump’s half-digested version of Fox & Friends “truth.”

Two things at the same time? Too complex for Trump.

MINNEAPOLIS — It seems almost too Hollywoodesque that in the year of protest in the NFL, perhaps the league’s most socially conscious team would finish on top.

That players who have been at the forefront of the new civil rights movement would help lead the way to a franchise’s first Super Bowl title.

And that after selflessly helping others, those players would be rewarded with more than they could have envisioned.

But the hard-to-believe ending became reality Sunday night as the underdog Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots, 41-33, at U.S. Bank Stadium.

As green confetti fell to the field, it sank in that safety Malcolm Jenkins, defensive end Chris Long and wide receiver Torrey Smith had delivered all season both on behalf of their teammates in the locker room as well as people in underprivileged communities. That’s called winning on and off the field.

Although many Eagles players were active in trying to make a difference out there, Jenkins, Long and Smith set the tone through their work with the Players Coalition, the main group of players who protested during the national anthem to shine a light on racial injustice.

re: #86 JordanRules

Also: I noticed Nigel chose Fox (presumably seen only over here) to spout this crap: I guess he knows that if he said stuff like this back home, a (very crowded) raft of people - people who know what they’re talking about - would be ripping him to shreds over it.

Poor Breitbart Assholes, it’s always an assault on their manhood. Snowflakes.

CTE is the reason I stopped watching football. Can’t cheer a game where any hit - especially a concussion could doom a player to CTE, which messes with their brain chemistry/structure to the point of mental illness and personality changes that could lead to death or other serious harms/issues.

We saw a hit just like that last night - a Patriots player got laid out in a clean hit. Guy was blindsided and was knocked flat out.

I can’t in good consicence cheer that. I appreciate the athleticism involved in the game, but the consequences of 300 pounders traveling 4.5 (or 200 pound players going even faster) at each other is impossible to ignore. It’s physics - the body in motion stays in motion - and the brain sloshes around after every hit.

re: #165 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The GOP have made government the enemy - taxes are awful, provision of basic services are awful, and the consequences of those two regressive beliefs is that tax cuts are the only solution, which causes a cycle of devolution:

1) massive tax cuts
2) gut safety net services and basic government services;
3) more tax cuts;
4) people complain that services aren’t doing their purposes;
5) more tax cuts.

Rinse and repeat. The GOP end-game is to simultaneously gut functioning government and to make government so small that it fits in bedrooms and bathrooms to impose their policy determinations on everyone (birth control, abortion, transgender bathroom bills, etc.) while opening the door to a surge in bigotry and discrimination sanctioned by the state. Throw in voter suppression to make sure that their policy choices are not easily overturned, and packing the courts with reactionary extremists, and it’s a recipe for disaster.

New England had riots. More of the same (mostly devoid of riots - that’s one hell of a spin there).

Both were sports related.

About 5 years ago I declared I would never attend or view a football game again. I could not stand the violence, especially at younger levels. Since my husband is a high school basketball coach that is informally expected to attend school football games, I made things very inconvenient with my protest.

Then a whole lot of high school football players got killed that summer. And more information came out about CTE and the fact the NFL had covered it up. He’s at the point now where watching football is rare and he will not attend a high school game. I said, “How would you feel if you were watching when one of your students went down with a head injury or worse?”

We’re in Texas and football is king and some of our friends still want their kids playing football. Most of them are %<*! Texas Aggies. Seriously.

He broached that option one in one of his offhand comments. Remember, China’s largest credit rating agency has already downgraded US securities, citing “political deficiencies”.

Yes, we can just do the Trump thing: declare bankruptcy and offer pennies on the dollar - take it or leave it: at which point we would find ourselves downgraded to a rating alongside Kenya or Greece and have to pay premium interest rates to borrow anything.

Or is that what he really intends to do?

“…Oh, and the e-mails also provide further evidence that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is an utterly truthless drone whose daily briefings are unworthy of serious attention. At the time Comey was fired, the White House line, peddled by SarahHuck and by the vulgar talking yam for whom she works, was that agents in the Bureau had “lost confidence” in Comey’s leadership. (At the time, the president*, of course, would undercut his own outrageous lie by telling Lester Holt that he canned Comey over the Russia thing.) These e-mails show a sense of outrage among the grunts in the field offices on whose behalf Sanders and Trump presumed to speak.”

L350 Million a WEEK. (sorry, I don’t know how to do the Pound sign so I used L.)

Pound comes from the Roman Libra so all the symbol is a fancy L

L = pound = Libra
S = Shilling = Solidus
D = pence = Denarius

20 shillings to the pound, 12 pence to the shilling or 240 pence to the pound. We kept all the other weird measurements, pity Jefferson got us decimal money…

Sorry for the digression.

Not only that but opp research started by their own party.

Digby:

“…Over the course of the last few days, legal experts patiently explained that the motivation of informants and sources is not relevant to the question of whether the information they provide is true. Cases are made every single day on the basis of testimony and evidence provided by people whose motives are anything but pure: gangsters, jailhouse snitches, angry spouses, whatever. It’s not as if the authorities just take their word for it. Information has to be corroborated, and apparently the FISA warrant application process is particularly demanding in that regard.

Nonetheless, Trump and his loyalists are arguing that any Democratic member of the government bureaucracy is automatically suspect, and any information that comes from a Democratic partisan must be immediately discounted as unreliable. This is very interesting, considering Republicans’ partisan history of feeding information to law enforcement and special counsels.”

Man I would love to see Ryan lose. That’d be a huge win and probably a hint that the whole House would be flipped.

The odds of the House flipping are pretty good given who among the GOP are already indicating that they’re retiring/cashing out, and that the generic ballot is heavily favoring Democrats.

The PA redistricting case will certainly help as well.

There’s also the matter of GOPers in blue states who are in serious trouble, and if Democrats take a bunch of those seats, they could win back control of the House without even dipping into the red states.

That’s highly indicative of a blue wave. But it also means making and sustaining a GOTV and staying focused on what matters - getting Democrats elected at all levels and ensuring access to the polls. GOP thrives on voter apathy and vote suppression. That’s why they keep trying to beat people down and suppress turnout all while claiming voter fraud when they lose.

I’ve been through a bankruptcy back in 2009 when the economic collapse hit me. I gave up my crappy underwater house and ditched a lot of credit card debt. I haven’t been in debt since.
It was a lot less stressful that I thought it would be. Moving was the only part that sucked.

I have no debt, not even a mortgage.

Well, I do have hub’s medical debt now…

I dunno (IANAL and all that), but I think there are a couple of under-reported aspects to the PA gerrymandering decision that may or may not be unmitigated “good news”. Of course, this dark-lining-to-the-cloud opinion is based mainly on reading Internet commentary, so there you go…

1. Did SCOTUS cite any particular reason for refusing a review/stay of the PASC decision? I’m guessing it might be because it’s solely a “State” matter (?)

2. One aspect of the PA case that is moderately disturbing is that (AFAICT) a good case CAN be made that this is a matter of some level of “judicial overreach”; i.e. a State SC telling the lege to take actions, under an interpretation of the State Constitution whose sole appeal would be to the Court that mandated the action in the first place. The Pennsylvania decision looks to be a “good thing” for election purposes, (at least IMO), but I’m wondering if we’d be cheering as much if the State SC in, say, Idaho or Mississippi, issued a decision reserving the power to adjudicate Congressional districts (or review thereof) to itself, where we KNOW Republicans would be favored? Justice does, after all, have two edges on her sword…..

re: #323 Jay C

The state Supreme Court is the final word on interpretation of state law. Period. That’s the way it’s been since the nation was founded, and the GOP legislators trying to wiggle around this sacrosanct principle are messing with forces they don’t care to understand.

The Supreme Court was asked to rule on a state court’s ruling on state law. That’s not what the Supreme Court does, and it properly refused to hear it.

It’s not judicial overreach for a court to rule on the application of state law. Who but the state court can rule on the application of state law in that state? The legislature refused to apply the law on mapping districts in a way that was fair and impartial - instead gerrymandering districts so that all the Democrat votes were concentrated in a few cantons while GOPers benefited from being able to seat multiple representatives in districts that had been rigged to their benefit.

The GOP can claim that the court shouldn’t intervene in a political question, but that’s not how the law (and state constitution) are written.

The legislators lost.

Other states could end up doing districts favoring GOPers, but the thing here is that the PA case is only persuasive elsewhere. It’s not binding anywhere else but in PA.

This is something I tried to explain to Conservative friends years ago about climate change:

If you look at the climate record as best we can discern it, the last 10,000 or so years are anomalously stable. Outside of that, it was prone to huge fluctuations. Those 10,000 years contain the entirety of human civilization, which has only been possible because we knew where we could plant crops and expect them to grow to maturity before the first frost, and with only the water provided by the right amount of rain. It allowed us to build towns, which grew into cities, close enough to rivers and coastlines that we could use them for transportation but still only rarely flood.

That stability allowed us the luxury of enough food, without the constant labor of everyone merely to survive. That allowed the development of culture, including the arts and sciences, which in turn allowed us to advance still further.

But it seems like we’d been balancing on a knife edge, and we eventually developed the ability to knock the climate off that knife edge, back into instability.

The Pentagon’s Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is reportedly not able to document hundreds of millions of dollars of money it spent. An internal audit by Ernst & Young finds the agency can’t account for more than $800 million in construction projects, Politico reported.

This would have been an impeachable offense under President Obama’s tenure.

Did a stretch in a DLA command. They used to say “there are 4 divisions in our organization—US, International, and Support.”

Some of that money is not supposed to be ‘findable’.

Just got an insurance thing in the mail about the initial ER doctor bill. Insurance didn’t pay anything, but the cost was negotiated down about 50%. (Gotta get that deductible met…I’m actually feeling major relief that this all happened in January, rather than in December, so there’s only one deductible to worry about, instead of two.)

How does an insurance company not pay anything on an ER bill? For a heart attack? That sounds crazy. Glad the charge was negotiated down, but still.

re: #394 Blind Frog Belly White

But it seems like we’d been balancing on a knife edge, and we eventually developed the ability to knock the climate off that knife edge, back into instability.

the problem is thinking things like:
everyone is just like “us”
everywhere is just like “here”
everything’s always been the way it is now
everything’s always going to be the way it is now

when in fact,
- everything changes.
- we are not even temporarily in control

and it’s an illusion to think we ever had it all under control in the first place

this is true at the macro and micro (personal) levels

I would observe, however, that ‘everything changes’ is what AGW deniers now say, since warming is undeniable - “Climate always changes”.

But that’s the thing - it hasn’t. Not for 10,000 years.

I’d also observe that we turn out to have had more control over it than we thought, in the sense that we had the power to fuck it up.

a thought i had, probably unworkable in practicality was to trace all guns forward

start every investigation with the manufacturer
let them prove who they sold/shipped/transferred it to and when
go to that (likely dealer) guy - and repeat
you cant prove you legally transferred a weapon, its yours and your responsibility

Exhibit #99 of why it generally isn’t good political practice to hang one’s hat on the stock market level.

Anyway my stuff in the market is there for the long haul so. Days like this are part of the territory.

Doesn’t really make it easier to watch, but knee jerk decisions are always a bad idea.

Holy Shit it’s now down 914.69!

I got a feeling we’re seeing a repeat of the 1987 meltdown!!!!!!

Oh, no. Not even close. That was losing >20% in a single day. That was not being able to get anyone on the phone at Schwab, and not being able to find ANY buyers.

504
wrenchwench  Feb 5, 2018 • 12:12:38pm

Sometimes it’s the little things….

Business is incredibly slow this time of year, even though we are having very nice weather. I took it as a major compliment when a guy was looking around my shop, and paused to take out his glasses and put them on to get a closer look at something. He took another turn all the way around the shop with his glasses on. Sure enough, he said, ‘Nice shop!’ as he was leaving. It doesn’t pay the rent, but it keeps the door open.

Dow down 1027 pts. 4.07% @ 3:08

Back in the day, (when I worked in the markets for my father, trading parchments under the buttonwood tree) this would have signaled a “late tape”, i.e. anyone working in stocks should call their families and tell them they weren’t coming home that night….

The undeniable similarity is that deregulating banks (or not letting CFPB do its job) is the proximate cause.

Nah. Just hang on tight. Now they’re saying it’s down 1150 points, so it’s a tad volatile.

9% drop in the last five days of trading. That seems… not good.

re: #490 Dave In Austin

If you’re putting a traditional 20% down payment, you’d need $54,000. Even at 10% down, you’re looking at $27,000. 5% down, which is inadvisable is still $13,500.

My sense is that they think they’ve just gotten that much closer, and in a few more years, they might eke out enough, but they’ll still be thousands short.

No, it’s not, but the way it went up over the last few weeks wasn’t good either. Not based on much besides excess cash sloshing around.

Depends. The run-up over the last year didn’t make a lot of sense, in terms of valuation, so a correction makes sense.

But this is why, if you’re President, you don’t tout the stock market as proof of what a great President you are.

Circuit breakers halt trading on the nation’s stock markets during dramatic drops and are set at 7%, 13%, and 20% of the closing price for the previous day.

So, even these massive drops aren’t enough to trigger the trading halts.

We’ve now erased the entire year’s stock market gains.

Of course, this principle also assumes that the President isn’t going to be an incompetent narcissistic buffoon, but there we go….

(and speaking of going, the trading programs seem to have kicked in in the last few minutes, the Dow is rapidly rising out of its latest abyss)

Yes. I feel terrible for people that are nearer to retirement, but the market behavior we had seen was not sustainable. Some correction was due.

The only thing that’s annoying is that for a good chunk of people dumping stocks right now, it’s not based on some kind of market indicator—it’s just herd mentality and totally arbitrary.

Oh, I know. I’m in PA, though, state of the iconic ‘Goofy Kicking Donald Duck’ congressional district PA-7 (Meehan, now on his way out) and the GOP has been stalling and blocking every effort to confront gerrymandering after they redrew the map in 2010. On the state level there are redistricting bills stuck in committee because R’s who control them won’t let them go out for discussion or a vote. The bill in the state House has 102 bipartisan co-sponsors, half the legislature and is still bottlenecked by the GOP. So this is a happy day for PA (along with the Eagles’ huge win!)
