“One Less Bell to Answer” is definitely one of my faves in any genre and from any period; IMO, it’s one of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s finest compositions (along with “What the World Needs Now Is Love”; Jackie DeShannon’s version is the gold standard, but I love Bacharach’s short version of it, accompanying himself on piano, during the end credits of Austin Powers: Goldmember), but Marilyn McCoo and the rest of the group just gave it melancholy and soul.

Can I just say that I’m not impressed with either guy? Jerry Falwell, Jr., you can guess. Shane Claiborne, I’d be more inclined to be on his side, except he’s one of those Evangelicals who, despite their seeming lefty ideals, still refuse to accept LGBT people as fully human. (He thinks LGBT persons should be celibate.) So I consider this more of an in-house spat rather than anything that’s going to benefit the larger community.
I’ve got a documentary camera crew coming through town this weekend to film me picketing in front of Mark Driscoll’s “church” up in Scottsdale. I try to keep my criticisms of Driscoll on the secular side, just as I’ve done with Scientology. After all, there’s so much material to mine there—plagiarism, taking money from the church to promote “Real Marriage,” using a skeevy third-party company to get “Real Marriage” on to the New York Times bestseller list, using most (90%+) of the monies donated for missions on new church plants, imploding his Seattle megachurch, telling women we’re just “penis homes” for men…I could go on and on.
Driscoll is the gift that keeps on giving. His church attendees don’t like it when I tell them that Driscoll owns the outfit (he legally does) and if he were to leave, that church would go under. (One guy complained I was spending way too much time looking at corporate docs. “They’re all online,” I said. “And I used to be a lawyer.” Cue disgusted look.) But Evangelicals aren’t out there picketing him, it’s me, and I’m outside the charmed circle of the household of the faithful, by my own choice.
Whereas once the internet offered an escape from the real world, now the real world is a much-needed escape from the internet.

Sorry, by the time you’d posted this, I’d already logged out. I’ve submitted my letter to the newspaper, hopefully beating the deadline for tomorrow morning.
That guy’s letter in the Star-Herald was a first-class Gish Gallop; there was no way all the points could be addressed in the word limit allowed. (That said, they allowed him to go over the limit with his letter, so maybe they will allow me as well. I suppose that depends on the space they have available for letters.)
Here’s my response:
Mr. Dean Bell wrote on April 5 about “atheists and infidels banning prayer in schools” and saying “children cannot pray in school” (long-time misconceptions, only state-mandated or state-written prayers enforced by state employees are banned, children can pray as much as they like) to “atheists are the cause of moral decay in society” and the cause of mass shootings (also misconceptions, as atheists are the least represented religious demographic in prisons, jails, and divorce courts).
He invokes Roe v Wade for good measure, blaming that court decision on atheists as well (and misrepresenting it). To be clear, Roe did not start abortions, they always existed. It allowed for safe abortions and got the government out of the decisions between a woman and her doctor. Roe was about privacy, not freedom of choice as he asserts.
He also names Hollywood movies and video games as culprits for crime and moral decay. (Interestingly, those same movies and video games are found in highly atheistic First World countries such as Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Japan, yet those nations do not have the crime problems he tries to link to atheism, movies, and video games.)
The thrust of his argument is to deflect onto atheists, movies, and video games the problem of gun violence, and use them to create a strawman claiming people are trying to ban guns.
This is dangerous thinking, even worse than President GHW Bush’s claim that atheists cannot be patriotic nor should they be citizens (spoken while I was an atheist in the US Navy aboard an aircraft carrier at the time). Atheists have served in every combat the USA has engaged in. We value freedom of religion for all, not a select group.
Isolating minorities and claiming they are the principle source of crime despite all crime statistics is a long-standing method of stripping rights or bringing about genocide against those same groups of people.
The purpose of the Establishment Clause in the I Amendment is to protect the religious rights of all people, not particular groups. I do not know which religious sect this man claims as his faith, but I am sure he would be arguing just as passionately for the Establishment Clause as he argues against it in his letter, if the prayers imposed were not of his own faith.

A resolution condemning neo-Nazis and white nationalists died once again in the Tennessee legislature this week, the second time such a bill failed to pass the state house in the past few weeks.
The resolution would have had the state legislature “strongly denounce and oppose the totalitarian impulses, violent terrorism, xenophobic biases, and bigoted ideologies that are promoted by white nationalists and neo-Nazis,” according to the bill’s text.
But its author, House Republican Caucus chair Ryan Williams, withdrew it from consideration after receiving feedback from Republican lawmakers.

Reason Magazine has a post up by its Editor-in-Chief arguing that “liberals are against the free market” for boycotting The Atlantic for a man who advocated and doubled-down when asked to clarify his statement that he wished to hang women who had abortions, because hanging by strangulation is the most-cruel method.
This is advocating for genocide. The free market that the Libertarian Party magazine so vehemently defends is decrying people voting with their money in the free market to say they do not wish to buy apologia calling for genocide of women.

His latest film, “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” earned him an Academy Award nomination in 2014 for best animated feature. It was also selected for a slot in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar to the main competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
However, most consider 1988’s “Grave of the Fireflies,” a film based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s novel of the same name, depicting the struggles of a young boy and his sister in the final month of World War II, to be his best work. I have friends who I disagree about the role of government on. That’s disagreement. Williamson’s views are hang the bitches and the defense is “Well he was adopted right before Roe, we need to consider that guys.” Well shit, I’m sure there’s plenty of Chinese-American women who were adopted due to how women are viewed in China and the one child policy yet they’re staunchly pro choice. Falling short of a majority in the October ballot, Babis is seeking to secure enough backing to transition from his role of caretaker prime minister even as he fights a fraud probe and conflict-of-interest allegations. He’s also trying to build ties with other European Union leaders, while fending off comparisons with Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban and Polish ruling-party head Jaroslaw Kaczynski, with whom he shares some euroskeptic and anti-immigrant views.
With mainstream parties refusing to support Babis’s administration, the second-richest Czech could try to negotiate backing from the Communists and the far-right SPD party, an anti-Muslim group advocating for the country to follow the U.K. out of the EU. But Babis told the Pravo newspaper that he isn’t negotiating with SPD and that early elections were one option to end the stalemate.
Babiš really doesn’t have a lot of options left; either it’s cooperate with the SPD - a quasi-fascist political party - and the KSČM - unreconstructed Stalinists (which would be disastrous, to be honest) or it’s new elections. However, as the article notes, he might have trouble convincing lawmakers to dissolve the Chamber of Deputies, thereby triggering new elections.
He’s in quite a pickle…..and one entirely of his own making. He does have one option, one which he’s extremely unlikely to choose; namely, step down from the position of PM and put another member of his ANO party in that position while he works behind the scenes as an éminence grise. That might be palatable enough for one of the other mainstream parties to consider entering a coalition with ANO. Unfortunately, he’s far too egotistical for that.

Angela Merkel was able to put together a grand coalition between the two largest parties, her own center-right Christian Socialists and the center-left Socialist Party, but this lame compromise all but guarantees that both parties will lose support in the next elections and Germany will be in the position of having to rely on one of the extreme right or left-wing participants to form a majority.

This article is absolutely fucking insane. ICE created a fake school to fool foreign students into getting student visa under false pretenses in order to track foreign student visa brokers. A Chinese legal immigrant on a student visa wanted to become a citizen, but a Pentagon program called MAVNI for non-citizen recruits with highly sought after language and medical skills that would have enabled him to join was temporarily suspended, so he unknowingly enrolled in the fake school to extend his student visa, paying them $8K. When the program was reinstated he enlisted, which was perfectly legal based on his continuous presence in the US. However since he didn’t try to attend the fake classes at the fake school, because he was in basic training, ICE decided to go after him. ICE ignored General Mattis’ explicit instruction not to go after non-citizen veterans and soldiers, arguing that Mattis really only meant that they shouldn’t go after DREAMers who came here illegally (an absurd argument by any measure.) ICE is now trying to deport the soldier, and as the cherry on top of this fuckery never gave him back the $8K he paid to enroll in their fake ass entrapment school.

But his solution is to launch an entirely new and more destructive trade war that will cost American consumers more than they’ll see in tax breaks this year.

Side note: The wife and I made a snap decision to go to the NY Auto Show at Javits Center last night.
Pretty disappointing. We’ve gone for the last three years, and it’s gotten progressively more exclusive to the major manufacturers. The small shops doing custom work (which was always the most interesting part of it for me) have been squeezed out entirely, and the Classic Cars section (my second favorite part) displayed six cars. Six goddamned cars. The show itself took up roughly half the space it occupied last year - there was a second wing of Javits that showed smaller cars last year, and it was closed off to the public last night.
We’ve most likely attended our last NY Auto Show.
The one car that caught my attention was the Karma Revero, an electric made in SoCal that generates a good percentage of its power through an array of solar panels incorporated into its roof. And it was freaking gorgeous.
But with a price tag starting at $130K, it’s not on my short list of purchases at this time.

I am torn between the doom-and-gloomers who preach we will not recover from the damage he has done and that the GOP attacks on our institutions have fatally damaged us and the optimists who believe that there will be a blue wave in 2018, that in fact the Trump interlude will inflict permanent damage on the Republican brand, and our country will emerge stronger because we have looked into the abyss and rejected it.
I am optimistic, but we will be a changed country, and diminished in stature. Maybe we’ll be a bit more humble, but it’ll take time to see if the right people will have learned it, the right people not being our elected officials, but voters.

I still think that historians will see that America was at its peak between Jan 1 1992, with the collapse of the USSR and Sep 11, 2001…We then hung on for a while until November 2016 where we started going downhill.
We are still far, far away from a collapse along the lines of Rome or Byzantium but yes, we will have to sober up and see that we can no longer compare our role in the world to what it was before 2001.

You may find it far more entertaining than we unwashed masses who do not have an in depth knowledge of the period. The dialogue is not real and events that took place over an extended period were compressed into a few days. But it is amazingly accurate — even the over-the-top beginning concerning the concert actually happened (obviously a little differently than portrayed here), though 9 years prior to Stalin’s death.

I have to wonder who Deb Fischer is really working for, considering that the majority of her funding comes not from small individual contributions (5.26percent) but from large individual contributions (42.27 percent) and PAC contributions (48.64 percent), leaving 3.84 percent to “other” and $0 candidate self-financing.
Fischer has voted four times for Planned Parenthood and Sanctuary Cities funding, yet she claims to be pro-life; voted for the TPA, which transferred the Senate’s authority on trade to the Executive Branch; and supported the TPP.

With the Stock Market doing what it is thanks to President Dunning-Kruger, I figured I should probably go do damage control on my 401k.
It was down a little bit, no shock but all the funds based on stocks were up still based on the last 3 months. It was Bond based funds that were down, and Real Estate investments that were down by quite a bit. I was expecting to have to move all my money into “conservative” investments but that’s not the case.

I’ve was under the impression that Van Gogh suffered from a transient eye condition.
The Van Gogh Gallery says this is why:

It is thought that Van Gogh suffered from lead poisoning from all of the lead-based paints that he used. One of the symptoms of lead poisoning is swelling of the retinas which can cause one to see light in circles like halos around objects. This can be seen in paintings like The Starry Night.
Vincent van GoghVan Gogh also suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy and was thought to have been treated by his doctor, Dr. Gachet, with a drug called digitalis. Digitalis comes from the foxglove plant and can be seen laying in front of Dr. Gachet in Van Gogh’s Portrait of Doctor Gachet. This drug can cause one to see in yellow or see yellow spots which could explain Van Gogh’s consistent use of the color yellow in his later works.

It’s interesting, but ultimately just handwaving, to attempt to explain artistic visions in terms of the artist’s actual, you know, VISION.
I remember hearing someone discussing El Greco’s elongated people maybe being the result of astigmatism that would make everyone look taller and thinner than they really were. Sounds good, except then his paintings with elongated people would look EVEN MORE elongated than they are, to him.

I studied the painting in all my Art History classes, and I did hear a bit about his vision being affected.
I have always felt sorry for van Gogh. His paintings now bring vast amounts of money, and he struggled with life. What he might have done had he been better off.
