I was listening to the Fifth Dimension just yesterday.

“One Less Bell to Answer” is definitely one of my faves in any genre and from any period; IMO, it’s one of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s finest compositions (along with “What the World Needs Now Is Love”; Jackie DeShannon’s version is the gold standard, but I love Bacharach’s short version of it, accompanying himself on piano, during the end credits of Austin Powers: Goldmember), but Marilyn McCoo and the rest of the group just gave it melancholy and soul.

Ferk. I got QLed when commenting on the spat between Jerry Falwell Jr. and Shane Claiborne. Dragging from the previous thread…

Can I just say that I’m not impressed with either guy? Jerry Falwell, Jr., you can guess. Shane Claiborne, I’d be more inclined to be on his side, except he’s one of those Evangelicals who, despite their seeming lefty ideals, still refuse to accept LGBT people as fully human. (He thinks LGBT persons should be celibate.) So I consider this more of an in-house spat rather than anything that’s going to benefit the larger community.

I’ve got a documentary camera crew coming through town this weekend to film me picketing in front of Mark Driscoll’s “church” up in Scottsdale. I try to keep my criticisms of Driscoll on the secular side, just as I’ve done with Scientology. After all, there’s so much material to mine there—plagiarism, taking money from the church to promote “Real Marriage,” using a skeevy third-party company to get “Real Marriage” on to the New York Times bestseller list, using most (90%+) of the monies donated for missions on new church plants, imploding his Seattle megachurch, telling women we’re just “penis homes” for men…I could go on and on.

Driscoll is the gift that keeps on giving. His church attendees don’t like it when I tell them that Driscoll owns the outfit (he legally does) and if he were to leave, that church would go under. (One guy complained I was spending way too much time looking at corporate docs. “They’re all online,” I said. “And I used to be a lawyer.” Cue disgusted look.) But Evangelicals aren’t out there picketing him, it’s me, and I’m outside the charmed circle of the household of the faithful, by my own choice.

From the previous thread:

re: #83 teleskiguy

When you’re done with the letter post it to LGF ASAP. It can be refined here before you send it to the newspaper. (wink wink). Good luck in the writing!

Sorry, by the time you’d posted this, I’d already logged out. I’ve submitted my letter to the newspaper, hopefully beating the deadline for tomorrow morning.

That guy’s letter in the Star-Herald was a first-class Gish Gallop; there was no way all the points could be addressed in the word limit allowed. (That said, they allowed him to go over the limit with his letter, so maybe they will allow me as well. I suppose that depends on the space they have available for letters.)

Here’s my response:

Mr. Dean Bell wrote on April 5 about “atheists and infidels banning prayer in schools” and saying “children cannot pray in school” (long-time misconceptions, only state-mandated or state-written prayers enforced by state employees are banned, children can pray as much as they like) to “atheists are the cause of moral decay in society” and the cause of mass shootings (also misconceptions, as atheists are the least represented religious demographic in prisons, jails, and divorce courts).

He invokes Roe v Wade for good measure, blaming that court decision on atheists as well (and misrepresenting it). To be clear, Roe did not start abortions, they always existed. It allowed for safe abortions and got the government out of the decisions between a woman and her doctor. Roe was about privacy, not freedom of choice as he asserts.

He also names Hollywood movies and video games as culprits for crime and moral decay. (Interestingly, those same movies and video games are found in highly atheistic First World countries such as Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Japan, yet those nations do not have the crime problems he tries to link to atheism, movies, and video games.)

The thrust of his argument is to deflect onto atheists, movies, and video games the problem of gun violence, and use them to create a strawman claiming people are trying to ban guns.

This is dangerous thinking, even worse than President GHW Bush’s claim that atheists cannot be patriotic nor should they be citizens (spoken while I was an atheist in the US Navy aboard an aircraft carrier at the time). Atheists have served in every combat the USA has engaged in. We value freedom of religion for all, not a select group.

Isolating minorities and claiming they are the principle source of crime despite all crime statistics is a long-standing method of stripping rights or bringing about genocide against those same groups of people.

The purpose of the Establishment Clause in the I Amendment is to protect the religious rights of all people, not particular groups. I do not know which religious sect this man claims as his faith, but I am sure he would be arguing just as passionately for the Establishment Clause as he argues against it in his letter, if the prayers imposed were not of his own faith.

That is painfully obvious given what has been happening in Afghanistan and Iraq for 15 years, add in Syria and the fact that the president* wants to fight with Iran - as long as they can’t see the damage they can blame anyone except themselves.

Hmmm…

Gorsuch based her administration of the EPA on the New Federalism approach of downsizing federal agencies by delegating their functions and services to the individual states.[6] She believed that the EPA was over-regulating business and that the agency was too large and not cost-effective. During her 22 months as agency head, she cut the budget of the EPA by 22%, reduced the number of cases filed against polluters, relaxed Clean Air Act regulations, and facilitated the spraying of restricted-use pesticides. She cut the total number of agency employees, and hired staff from the industries they were supposed to be regulating.[4] Environmentalists contended that her policies were designed to placate polluters, and accused her of trying to dismantle the agency.[2]

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a GOP quid pro quo there (it would be irresponsible not to speculate).

Robert Bork was promised a Supreme Court nomination by the GOP when he fired Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox in the Saturday Night Massacre. When that seat became available under President Reagan, Bork was nominated (though he was defeated in Senate hearings).

Now comes Neil “frozen trucker” Gorsuch, son of the woman President Reagan selected for the EPA. “Don’t release those records, and we’ll promise your son will be rewarded with a Supreme Court nomination.”

Tennessee Resolution Denouncing neo-Nazis Dies in Legislature for Second Time (CNN)

A resolution condemning neo-Nazis and white nationalists died once again in the Tennessee legislature this week, the second time such a bill failed to pass the state house in the past few weeks.

The resolution would have had the state legislature “strongly denounce and oppose the totalitarian impulses, violent terrorism, xenophobic biases, and bigoted ideologies that are promoted by white nationalists and neo-Nazis,” according to the bill’s text.

But its author, House Republican Caucus chair Ryan Williams, withdrew it from consideration after receiving feedback from Republican lawmakers.

The second version was nearly identical to the first and was sponsored by Williams. The updated bill deleted a reference that urged law enforcement to recognize and pursue such groups as terrorist organizations.

Williams filed his bill on March 28 and withdrew it from consideration this Tuesday, April 3.

(With video showing the first bill die in thirty-six seconds)

It’s also what a free market is about. Reason Magazine has a post up by its Editor-in-Chief arguing that “liberals are against the free market” for boycotting The Atlantic for a man who advocated and doubled-down when asked to clarify his statement that he wished to hang women who had abortions, because hanging by strangulation is the most-cruel method.

This is advocating for genocide. The free market that the Libertarian Party magazine so vehemently defends is decrying people voting with their money in the free market to say they do not wish to buy apologia calling for genocide of women.

A passing of note:

Isao Takahata, the animated film director who co-founded Studio Ghibli and is known for his award-winning “Grave of the Fireflies,” died of lung cancer Thursday at a Tokyo hospital, Studio Ghibli announced Friday. He was 82.

Takahata, who was born in Mie Prefecture, co-founded Ghibli with renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki in 1985 and produced a number of films that earned widespread acclaim.

His latest film, “The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,” earned him an Academy Award nomination in 2014 for best animated feature. It was also selected for a slot in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar to the main competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

However, most consider 1988’s “Grave of the Fireflies,” a film based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s novel of the same name, depicting the struggles of a young boy and his sister in the final month of World War II, to be his best work. The film won many accolades, including the Animation Jury Award and Rights of the Child Award at the 1994 Chicago International Children’s Film Festival.

Fuck Williamson. This isn’t casual disagreement. This is wanting violence on women for having done a legal procedure that millions of women have gotten. And he’s got other repulsive views too. Dr Lizardo  Apr 6, 2018 • 4:53:10am

Meanwhile, here in the Czech Republic:

Czech billionaire Andrej Babis failed to reach an agreement to form a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party, extending a political deadlock more than five months after he won parliamentary elections.

Falling short of a majority in the October ballot, Babis is seeking to secure enough backing to transition from his role of caretaker prime minister even as he fights a fraud probe and conflict-of-interest allegations. He’s also trying to build ties with other European Union leaders, while fending off comparisons with Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban and Polish ruling-party head Jaroslaw Kaczynski, with whom he shares some euroskeptic and anti-immigrant views.

With mainstream parties refusing to support Babis’s administration, the second-richest Czech could try to negotiate backing from the Communists and the far-right SPD party, an anti-Muslim group advocating for the country to follow the U.K. out of the EU. But Babis told the Pravo newspaper that he isn’t negotiating with SPD and that early elections were one option to end the stalemate.

bloomberg.com

Babiš really doesn’t have a lot of options left; either it’s cooperate with the SPD - a quasi-fascist political party - and the KSČM - unreconstructed Stalinists (which would be disastrous, to be honest) or it’s new elections. However, as the article notes, he might have trouble convincing lawmakers to dissolve the Chamber of Deputies, thereby triggering new elections.

He’s in quite a pickle…..and one entirely of his own making. He does have one option, one which he’s extremely unlikely to choose; namely, step down from the position of PM and put another member of his ANO party in that position while he works behind the scenes as an éminence grise. That might be palatable enough for one of the other mainstream parties to consider entering a coalition with ANO. Unfortunately, he’s far too egotistical for that.

Back later - meatworld stuff to do.

Still irritates me that MSNBC canned Melissa Harris-Perry…

Technically she wasn’t canned. They demanded that she changed her program and she refused and quit. I think they wanted more representatives of conservative ideology on her show.

I really loved her but I seldom watched the show because I was never home at the time.

Similar conditions are brewing in Germany: the right-wing AfD and left-wing Linke Partei are currently considered to be too extreme for any coalitio.

Angela Merkel was able to put together a grand coalition between the two largest parties, her own center-right Christian Socialists and the center-left Socialist Party, but this lame compromise all but guarantees that both parties will lose support in the next elections and Germany will be in the position of having to rely on one of the extreme right or left-wing participants to form a majority.

This article is absolutely fucking insane. ICE created a fake school to fool foreign students into getting student visa under false pretenses in order to track foreign student visa brokers. A Chinese legal immigrant on a student visa wanted to become a citizen, but a Pentagon program called MAVNI for non-citizen recruits with highly sought after language and medical skills that would have enabled him to join was temporarily suspended, so he unknowingly enrolled in the fake school to extend his student visa, paying them $8K. When the program was reinstated he enlisted, which was perfectly legal based on his continuous presence in the US. However since he didn’t try to attend the fake classes at the fake school, because he was in basic training, ICE decided to go after him. ICE ignored General Mattis’ explicit instruction not to go after non-citizen veterans and soldiers, arguing that Mattis really only meant that they shouldn’t go after DREAMers who came here illegally (an absurd argument by any measure.) ICE is now trying to deport the soldier, and as the cherry on top of this fuckery never gave him back the $8K he paid to enroll in their fake ass entrapment school.

ICE is off the goddamned rails.

Xilong Zhu, 27, who came from China in 2009 to attend college in the United States, enlisted in the Army and was caught in an immigration dragnet involving a fake university set up by the Department of Homeland Security to catch brokers of fraudulent student visas.

Zhu paid tuition to the University of Northern New Jersey, created by DHS to appear as a real school, long enough to ship to basic training using the legal status gained from a student visa issued to attend that school.

So they entrap him, and then try to deport him.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area. Trumpworld remains in chaos, with added trade war craziness thrown in.

Kelly’s supposedly being cut out from decision making, which means he’s toast and doesn’t quite know it yet. Trump thinks he’s the smartest in the room and isn’t taking advice from anyone - no matter who it is, unless they’re on tv telling him what to do.

This is an administration in chaos and presenting a clear and present danger to the nation - Trump is a mortal threat - and the GOP continues enabling this nut because he’s not only their nut, but because Trump’s policies are their policies.

Trump wants to gut the function of government and ruin federal departments, agencies, and programs, so the GOP can turn around and claim that government is failing and we need to stop funding failing government programs. It’s a self-fulfilling action/loop, and the GOP are taking advantage of it while they can.

Take just the trade war talk. He claims you can win it easily (you cant’). Then he claims we’ve already lost the trade war (I’m guessing here he thinks because we have a trade imbalance that means there was a trade war that we lost - but that’s not what any of that means). But his solution is to launch an entirely new and more destructive trade war that will cost American consumers more than they’ll see in tax breaks this year.

The GOP refuses to stop Trump. That means it’s up to Democrats to retake Congress in November with overwhelming turnout nationwide to make sure that the GOP are booted at every level of government to try and begin to repair the damage they’re doing to the nation.

Side note: The wife and I made a snap decision to go to the NY Auto Show at Javits Center last night.

Pretty disappointing. We’ve gone for the last three years, and it’s gotten progressively more exclusive to the major manufacturers. The small shops doing custom work (which was always the most interesting part of it for me) have been squeezed out entirely, and the Classic Cars section (my second favorite part) displayed six cars. Six goddamned cars. The show itself took up roughly half the space it occupied last year - there was a second wing of Javits that showed smaller cars last year, and it was closed off to the public last night.

We’ve most likely attended our last NY Auto Show.

The one car that caught my attention was the Karma Revero, an electric made in SoCal that generates a good percentage of its power through an array of solar panels incorporated into its roof. And it was freaking gorgeous.

But with a price tag starting at $130K, it’s not on my short list of purchases at this time.

I am optimistic, but we will be a changed country, and diminished in stature. Maybe we’ll be a bit more humble, but it’ll take time to see if the right people will have learned it, the right people not being our elected officials, but voters.

I still think that historians will see that America was at its peak between Jan 1 1992, with the collapse of the USSR and Sep 11, 2001…We then hung on for a while until November 2016 where we started going downhill.

We are still far, far away from a collapse along the lines of Rome or Byzantium but yes, we will have to sober up and see that we can no longer compare our role in the world to what it was before 2001.

re: #141 Hecuba’s daughter

My film group met Wednesday night to discuss “Death of Stalin”, a very black comedy banned in Russia. Certain members who were in a Northwestern University extension program reported that the class unanimously expressed their distaste and contempt for Trump. They assumed that Trump will be history and our nation will return to its “normal” operation, probably in 2020. They thought of him as a buffoon.

I am torn between the doom-and-gloomers who preach we will not recover from the damage he has done and that the GOP attacks on our institutions have fatally damaged us and the optimists who believe that there will be a blue wave in 2018, that in fact the Trump interlude will inflict permanent damage on the Republican brand, and our country will emerge stronger because we have looked into the abyss and rejected it.

Side note: I really enjoyed “Death of Stalin.” I took my 14yo. He was less certain about the humor, but enjoyed it anyway.

I’d say it’s pretty fictionalized - it’s black humor, after all. And they seem to have take some events and consolidated them, such as the drumhead trial and execution of Lavrenty Beria.

But all in all, not a bad film. It opens this weekend here in the Czech Republic and it’ll likely do brisk business…….Czechs love black humor.

You may find it far more entertaining than we unwashed masses who do not have an in depth knowledge of the period. The dialogue is not real and events that took place over an extended period were compressed into a few days. But it is amazingly accurate — even the over-the-top beginning concerning the concert actually happened (obviously a little differently than portrayed here), though 9 years prior to Stalin’s death.

BlackRock (BLK) tops our list. The asset manager is cutting gun sellers including Walmart (WMT) and Dicks Sporting Goods (DKS) from two new ETFs. The new funds exclude stocks of gun makers and large gun retailers following the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting in February in which 17 people were killed. Other brands that won’t be included are Kroger (KR), American Outdoor Brands (AOBC) and Vista Outdoor (VSTO).

We are still far, far away from a collapse along the lines of Rome or Byzantium but yes, we will have to sober up and see that we can no longer compare our role in the world to what it was before 2001.

As a student of economics, stats show that American economic performance peaked in September 1973 and began to decline with the first OPEC oil embargo in October 1973. Ever since then, the US has been in economic decline.

As a student of history, it’s a fact that every empire falls sooner or later. We decided under McKinley to become an empire and that set in motion the inevitable decline.

As a student of economics, stats show that American economic performance peaked in September 1973 and began to decline with the first OPEC oil embargo in October 1973. Ever since then, the US has been in economic decline.

It was more a matter of a time when the USA was the most influential nation in the world, militarily, culturally and economically.

That all peaked in 2001 and is now starting to sputter and decline

That’s not by accident.

Trump’s base is similarly misinformed and ignorant. Fox has weaponized the ignorance, and the GOP exploits it daily. Trump is the consequence of this ignorant worldview; he’s the symptom of the moral/ethical rot of the GOP, which has been conditioned that upon hearing the word Clinton or Obama to think of every conspiracy theory under the sun and to launch still more nonsensical investigations that will deflect attention from ongoing criminality in Trumpworld.

And the NYT has a column about the conspiracy theory that says Trump is a genius.

It shouldn’t matter when the call is made - before or after they make abortion illegal.

They aren’t pro life. This is just more proof of the misogynistic position the right wing has taken. They don’t want women to have a choice. They want them to carry to term and they don’t care what happens to the mom or baby after it’s born. They wont provide prenatal care and they aren’t providing care after birth either.

They just want the baby born.

23,400? Technical analysis? I usually avoid that, but what criteria did you use to get that number?

Seat-of-the-pants-WAG. That level seems to be where the uptick in the Dow took off from last fall: the growth curve got steeper from around the 23,400 level up to the late-Jan high: the WAG is that the lower level is the “floor” below which investors/speculators will actually start to lose money they made in the prior years’ runup.

But of course, like any other stock-market analysis, subject to correction at any time…..

The ones who aren’t bursting blood vessels screaming “YOU WANT AMERICA TO FAIL!!!” are trying to act like pocket economists by arguing that missing the estimate by over half is a “good” thing because it means the economy is at full employment and so fewer jobs need to be created. It’s the magical world of Trumpism: Even when he fails, he “wins.”

There is absolutely no real significance one way or another to today’s job report. Its just another typical monthly report like we have been having for the last eight years that will be revised several times. But you can’t get many clicks for an article with the headline “BLS reports nothing of any significance.”

starherald.com

The writer is incensed about Fischer having a “secret liberal agenda.” Yeah, no, but keep thinking that. That sort of thinking can only help Jane Reybould’s (D) attempt to unseat her this year.

I always look at campaign funding sources. I have to wonder who Deb Fischer is really working for, considering that the majority of her funding comes not from small individual contributions (5.26percent) but from large individual contributions (42.27 percent) and PAC contributions (48.64 percent), leaving 3.84 percent to “other” and $0 candidate self-financing.

Fischer has voted four times for Planned Parenthood and Sanctuary Cities funding, yet she claims to be pro-life; voted for the TPA, which transferred the Senate’s authority on trade to the Executive Branch; and supported the TPP.

And people who may wonder where van Gogh got his impressions for “Starry Night” need not look any further.

Maybe ol’ Vincent had some special way to see the universe and all its creations.

I’ve was under the impression that Van Gogh suffered from a transient eye condition.
The Van Gogh Gallery says this is why:

We have had some recent inquiries about Van Gogh’s vision and how it influenced his art work. Van Gogh’s vision problems could be attributed to several factors. It is thought that Van Gogh suffered from lead poisoning from all of the lead-based paints that he used. One of the symptoms of lead poisoning is swelling of the retinas which can cause one to see light in circles like halos around objects. This can be seen in paintings like The Starry Night.

Vincent van GoghVan Gogh also suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy and was thought to have been treated by his doctor, Dr. Gachet, with a drug called digitalis. Digitalis comes from the foxglove plant and can be seen laying in front of Dr. Gachet in Van Gogh’s Portrait of Doctor Gachet. This drug can cause one to see in yellow or see yellow spots which could explain Van Gogh’s consistent use of the color yellow in his later works.

To learn more about the different theories on Van Gogh’s vision and how it influenced his work check out “Colored visions? - The pharmacological history of Van Gogh” from New Science Magazine or learn more about Van Gogh’s health.

He’s dealing with his psychoses, can’t sell his paintings, and there’s a creature running around that, because of his “vision,” only he can see. At the end, van Gogh, Amy, and the Doctor are looking up at the sky, and van Gogh tries to explain to the Doctor the colors he sees in the nigh sky on a starry night. Also guest stars Bill Nighy.

It’s interesting, but ultimately just handwaving, to attempt to explain artistic visions in terms of the artist’s actual, you know, VISION.

I remember hearing someone discussing El Greco’s elongated people maybe being the result of astigmatism that would make everyone look taller and thinner than they really were. Sounds good, except then his paintings with elongated people would look EVEN MORE elongated than they are, to him.

President Carter chalks up another nation:

cartercenter.org

ATLANTA — The world’s newest nation, South Sudan, has succeeded in interrupting transmission of Guinea worm disease, the country’s minister of health announced Wednesday at The Carter Center. As of the end of February 2018, South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, has recorded zero cases of Guinea worm disease for 15 consecutive months. Because the Guinea worm life cycle is about a year, a 15-month absence of cases indicates the interruption of transmission.

“This is a great achievement for our young nation,” Dr. Riek Gai Kok, South Sudan’s health minister, said during the global Guinea Worm Eradication Program’s 22nd annual review at The Carter Center. “Our health workers and thousands of volunteers have done exemplary work eliminating this disease across our country, and I have no doubt that the World Health Organization will grant certification in due time.”
