Also, the deal wasn’t just with America. Were bribes given to officials of all of the European countries involved with this deal?

re: #39 Backwoods_Sleuth
Here we are witnessing Trump’s vaunted “deal making” in action. He doesn’t bargain. He doesn’t set down parameters. He asks what the other side wants, and then gives it to them. Probably, he expects he can stiff the Chinese in the future, like he has his other business partners. But in matters of international trade, he can’t — not without serious repercussions, anyway.
China knows how to play Trump like a fiddle. Doubtless, he will forget (or has already forgotten) the concession he just announced, but they can now hold his feet to the fire and get what they want. This idiot will hand over to anyone the keys to the realm. I’m very worried what will come out of the meeting with Kim Jong-Un.

Ack! Indeed. I’m getting close to my HS 50th and not sure that there will even be a reunion. Probably, but I don’t know if I’d go or not. Maybe if I lose 20 pounds? LOL.
I’ve been enjoying reading John Scalzi’s Reader Request columns this evening. For example:
Edward Brennan: Should one be civil to those people who are not civil to you? Obviously, we should not normally be assholes, but is being an asshole a justified response to an asshole? What about if someone is being an asshole to others, what do we do?
My general rule of thumb is to treat people with civility until and unless they give you a reason not to. Where that line is for each person is in a different place, and may depend on context. Also let’s also note there’s a difference between tolerating people who might be momentarily rude and/or obnoxious, and tolerating the actions of people who believe you or someone else aren’t fully human and/or don’t have a right to the same freedoms and privileges they might enjoy. Much of the question of “civility” these days boils down to racists and bigots plaintively whining that their opinion that other people are somehow inferior isn’t treated with respect and gravity. And, well. Fuck those guys. Fuck them right up the nose. As I’ve said before, if you want me to treat your ideas with respect, get better ideas.

In plain English:
• North Korea as a permanent nuclear power that can strike its neighbors, but not the mainland US
• NK can always break back out to an ICBM that can reach the US
• NK gives up most chem/bio weapons (sorta like Syria)
• Little or no way to know if NK cheats— Max Fisher (@Max_Fisher) May 13, 2018
The rest of the thread
Whatever North Korea deal gets reached, the things that’ll get the attention are USFK reduction and NK dismantlement pledges.
The things that really matter – but will get ignored — are inspections and monitoring. That’s what we got from JCPOA before we threw it in the toilet.— Max Fisher (@Max_Fisher) May 13, 2018
I know nobody wants to hear this but North Korea is not giving up its nuclear deterrent — it’s just not — so any viable deal will need to accept that deterrent. That’s just reality. Expectations need to be set waaaaaaaaay lower than they were going into talks on the Iran deal.
— Max Fisher (@Max_Fisher) May 13, 2018
Honestly, the American partisan dynamics that make the world’s lone superpower seemingly incapable of forging long-term agreements — particularly arms control agreements — worries me a lot more than whatever painful compromises might get made for a North Korea deal.

not really, he tossed them aside as soon as Nancy’s house astrologer told them it was safe. But for that, they took it in stride but realized that they could trust nobody, and started insinuating their people into all levels of government, education, the media, public administration and even the military.

I was a registered Republican and even voted for McCain in the 2000 GOP primaries and might have supported him in the general. But that was a long, long time ago.
The Fundamentalist wing of the GOP was opposed to his social policies and were threatening to bail on him and the party and run their own candidate. They certainly would have had he picked Joe Lieberman as running mate.
And had Sarah just smiled and looked good and let people project their own notion of the ideal candidate onto her, it might have worked, but they should have known in advance that was not possible with her.
Trump Praises Late Mom in Mother’s Day Video—But Fails to Mention Melania

The mother of her 12-year-old son, Barron, was not mentioned once during the entire address (and for that matter neither were the mothers of his other children, Ivana Trump and Marla Maples).
and that is the point, he did not want to remind people that there are multiple mothers involved in his own family…

On Mother’s Day 2012, I still had a mother, a grandmother, a stepmother and a mother-in-law. They were all gone in a little over 2 years. My mother-in-law and stepmother died on the same day in 2013. My grandmother followed a few weeks later, just after her 105th birthday. My mom passed on July 23, 2014. I last spoke to her about 5 hours before she died. My last words to her were, “I love you, mama,” which had probably been my first thoughts of her 65 years earlier.

Obama could have been held up as a poster child as proof that the American Dream can work, namely that anyone, regardless of race or social origin who works hard and applies themselves can rise to even the highest office in the land.
But that would have involved acknowledging his accomplishments, however grudgingly, and somehow they just could not bring their bigoted selves to do that.
So instead we heard that he was a Kenyan Muslim, an affirmative action baby, a terrorist sympathizer, etc., anything to distract from the fact that he was erudite and educated.

I had that issue in high school as well, although I did not have any (openly) gay friends (they did not come out until later), I had no issue with homosexuality and did not tolerate gay-bashers.

Georgia sniper idolized Parkland shooter in manifesto before wounding two in highway shooting (Broward County, Fla. Sun-Sentinal, more at the link):
A Georgia highway sniper left behind a “hate-filled” manifesto lauding Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz before terrorizing drivers with a pistol, police said Saturday.
Rex Harbour, who took his own life after being confronted by authorities Friday, wrote that the jailed school gunman gave him “courage and confidence,” according to the Hill County Sheriff’s Office.
The 26-year-old landscaper-turned-shooter unleashed at least 17 bullets on travelers from the cover of a forest along Georgia 365, striking two people and seven vehicles.
A woman called 911 after Harbour’s spray of bullets struck her 54-year-old husband in the hip while they drove north on the highway. Her panicked plea for help came just before noon and was followed by more drivers inundated by gunfire, police said at a press conference.

Florida group sues Collier schools over unbalanced science books
His group claims science textbooks approved during Tuesday’s school board meeting go against a Florida law that requires these educational materials to be balanced and accurate.
“I’m here to tell you that it’s not up to the school district to indoctrinate kids with one view as a proven fact rather than present both sides,” Flaugh said.
He said evolution should be taught along with creationism, and that climate change should be taught with an alternative viewpoint too.
He want’s balance in education.
A bill passed last year lets Flaugh, and other taxpayers give their input, and to object 15 of 23 of the approved science books for the 2017-18 curriculum.

They have been working toward that goal ever since the idea of Christian Reconstructionism came out.
The arc of society has been to further remove religion from the affairs of state, not the other way round.
What Fundamentalists (and many other Christians as you will find a wide swath across all faiths who think the Bible should be taught in science classes and school should be opened with prayers) tend to forget is Separation of Church and State exists to protect churches from the depredation of state power as well as protecting the state.

My grandparents have all been English speakers as well but mom’s parents knew some of their parents native language. Grandpa always told my brothers and I that our mouth was bigger than our dupas when he felt we were over eating or eating too fast. 5/8 great grandparents. I think they all knew English since they arrived fairly young but I do have an obituary of one third great grandmother who only spoke Irish. And I’m convinced that her kids grew up speaking at least some Irish because her daughter, great grandmother’s aunt who later helped raise my Nana and her siblings when Great Nana died, Nana was convinced she came over from Ireland so she must have had some kind of accent. All mine were naturalized as far as I know though I’m not too sure about one of my third great grandmothers, she was a widowed and died only a few years after arriving from Scotland.

At any age??!!! Wow.
I remember looking at a chart of the age of consent in the various states back when it was relevant to me, so…1969, 1970? There were a few benighted backwaters like New York and California where it was 18, most civilized states it was 16, in most of the former C.S.A. it was 12, and in Delaware it was 7.
Now it seems to be 18 across the board. I don’t know when that happened.
I just wish more Americans mostly those of European descent would remember their families too were strangers in a new land and dealing with the process of assimiliation and yes John Kelly a lot of them were poor, illiterate, and “unskilled.”

Age of consent in the USA varies by state, from 16 to 18.

Some criminal laws in states are in conflict with their own state’s consent laws, such as my own. It is illegal in Nebraska to “lewdly induce” someone under seventeen with “carnal knowledge” (regardless of the age of the inducer), but the age of consent is sixteen.
In one government agency after another, New Yorker encountered a pattern: on controversial issues, the Trump admin is often not writing down potentially damaging information.

Quite true, but “pulling up the ladder” is an American tradition of (only-slightly-less)as long standing as immigration itself. Reading a bit into the background of the first major attempt to restrict immigration into the US (1924): you see a lot of attitudes that the build-The-Wall Trumprrhoids echo to this day. “Native”* obsessions about cultural dilution were as active then as now - even if the influx of “poor, illiterate, unskilled” foreigners were indisputably “white” - by today’s standards: that so many contemporary incomers aren’t doesn’t make the attitudes any better.
*WASPs of course, not American Indians.

Well 1924 was the first major done to Europeans. The Chinese Exclusionary Act happened in 1882 I believe. But yes. I definitely see the same parallels you’re seeing and it’s crazy to think if my great grandmother had been a few years younger, she likely would have been subject to the 1924 quota on immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. My mom never knew her that well but we still eat a lot of variants of her old recipes.

From the dissent:
The Constitution gives us the authority to decide real
cases and controversies; we do not have the right to simplify
or otherwise change the facts of a case in order to
make our work easier or to achieve a desired result. But
that is exactly what the Court does in this case. The
Court overturns petitioner’s convictions for three counts of
first-degree murder by attributing to his trial attorney,
Larry English, something that English never did. The
Court holds that English violated petitioner’s constitutional
rights by “admit[ting] h[is] client’s guilt of a charged
crime over the client’s intransigent objection.” Ante, at
11.1 But English did not admit that petitioner was guilty
of first-degree murder. Instead, faced with overwhelming
evidence that petitioner shot and killed the three victims,
English admitted that petitioner committed one element of
that offense, i.e., that he killed the victims. But English
strenuously argued that petitioner was not guilty of firstdegree
murder because he lacked the intent (the mens rea)
required for the offense. App. 508-512. So the Court’s
newly discovered fundamental right simply does not apply
to the real facts of this case.

But on the one hand, if they’re right, they’ll all get raptured and the rest of us can get on with life (or even better: we get raptured and they’re stuck on earth to be tormented); on the other hand, if they’re wrong, maybe it’ll mean they’ll (or a significant number of them) stop believing in this stupid prophecy that isn’t actually a prophecy but marginally interesting fiction written to comment on the state of politics when it was written.

Slumlord Millionaire Sean Hannity Evicts Poor People Like a Common Kushner (Wonkette, more at the link):
Sean Hannity is a goddamn humanitarian for investing some of his Fox News millions in low-income housing (purchased with loans supported by Uncle Sam). After his real estate holdings became known, Hannity described his purchase of rental properties foreclosed on during the financial crisis as an act that just might earn him sainthood:
It is ironic that I am being attacked for investing my personal money in communities that badly need such investment and in which, I am sure, those attacking me have not invested their money. The fact is, these are investments that I do not individually select, control, or know the details about; except that obviously I believe in putting my money to work in communities that otherwise struggle to receive such support.
Well wouldn’t you know it, Hannity turns out to be a real bastard of an absentee landlord, according to an investigative report by the Washington Post. Or at least the management company that handles the day-to-day operations of Hannity’s Georgia apartment complexes is a right bastard of a corporate person: The managers of the four largest of Hannity’s apartment complexes file eviction notices against residents at double the average rate for Georgia rental properties, and they appear to use the frequent eviction notices as a tactic to make sure they collect every last late fee and cleaning charge possible. All of which is of course perfectly legal, since Georgia’s laws are heavily tilted in favor of landlords and against tenants, who really should be ashamed of not owning their homes anyway.

Ironically, if a leased property is infested with bedbugs, that is probably a breach of the warranty of habitability, a breach which would allow a tenant (normally), to withhold rent until it is cured (or to pay for remediation themselves). I don’t know enough about the jurisdictional rules wherever he has these properties, but usually breach of the warranty of habitability is a valid defense in unlawful detainer (eviction) proceedings. If the tenant/defendants failed to raise bedbugs as an issue, they may (unfortunately) be barred from pursuing a later claim.

Fair point. Depending on how the restrooms are constructed, each of those doors may actually be considered a stall (you might see something like that at parks/beaches and occasionally on some commercial build outs). If that’s the case, then they just need one or two stalls to be handicap accessible.

re: #246 KGxvi
Ironically, if a leased property is infested with bedbugs, that is probably a breach of the warranty of habitability, a breach which would allow a tenant (normally), to withhold rent until it is cured (or to pay for remediation themselves). I don’t know enough about the jurisdictional rules wherever he has these properties, but usually breach of the warranty of habitability is a valid defense in unlawful detainer (eviction) proceedings. If the tenant/defendants failed to raise bedbugs as an issue, they may (unfortunately) be barred from pursuing a later claim.
“Jurisdictional rules”? I know that in New York (NYC especially), a landlord who rents a tenant a bedbug-infested unit (like most other “habitability” issues) is, under the law, either 1) required to remedy the issue at their expense, or 2) credit the tenant for fixing the problem themselves. Of course, in reality, neither solution is applied with any equitability - it usually involves lengthy procedure in Housing Court. At least here in NY, we have such procedures, in Georgia, who knows???

At the moment, the “Christian Right” is getting a two-fer - killing Muslims and violently repressing those who aren’t killed, AND setting the table for the End Times, where the Jews become kindling for the fires of the Apocalypse.
I used to think Israel would be leery of help/support from people who see them as worthy of damnation, and the first into the fire during the End Times, but then I realized that since Netanyahu et al. don’t believe in the end times, they’re cynically happy for the support.
Each group is using the other. Symbiosis.
Netanyahu is a conservative. Conservatism’s only goal is gaining and maintaining power. If he can use US Evangelicals, he’ll do it. He would rather burn Israel to the ground than give up an inch of power.

What I mean by jurisdictional rules is that unlawful detainer actions can be very limited. They are in California and only a certain number of defenses are available. The warranty of habitability is one of the defenses. I suspect it is in most states, but it’s possible that the defendant has to bring a cross-complaint that increases costs and time.

I realized that one reason why Trump gets along so well with dictators is that they look at him and see someone easily manipulated. Look how well KJU’s doing - he finished up his nuclear and missile development programs successfully, and then offers Trump things he was going to give up anyway, and gives Trump a chance to look like he did something useful.
Our allies don’t want Trump because he’s stupid and unreliable as an ally. But our enemies love him because he’s so easy to play. This is the danger - those enemies can give Trump flashy but ultimately meaningless victories and make him look successful, to keep him around for further manipulation.

A double amputee (from having already been shot according to reports) is in a wheelchair with an early bronze age ranged weapon made famous in a classic Bible story involving a youth against a giant warrior. This is both horrifying and insane. Every single newspaper in the Arab world will have this picture and this story….and Israel did it to herself.

In fairness, while the official church teaching is “natural family planning”, most actual Catholics in the US rely on actual birth control devices/medication. This poll from 2016 found that only 8% of American Catholics see using contraception as morally wrong. Also, interestingly, only 51% of American Catholics saw having an abortion as morally wrong (the other 49% split between “morally acceptable” and “not a moral issue”).

It’s very rare that a nation cedes a place of global leadership and then easily gets it back. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia lost all it’s clout as the de facto leader of the Second World Nations. The fall of the French, Spanish, and British Empires hurt those three nations’ standing in the world for quite a while (arguably the British have recovered the most, but they are nowhere near the global power they used to be).
Perhaps we are unique, or at least uniquely positioned, to recovery the way other world leaders have not. But if the Trump misAdministration lasts for a full 8 years, I suspect a lot of changes will happen to the global order between now and 2024.

IMO we are not coming back from this. This country is done for. Yeah, we were taught all that stuff in my church when I was a teen…the Rapture would take all the faithful and the Jewish people would be left to the Great Tribulation and would then be evangelized by Elijah (because he never died…he was taken into heaven while still alive) and all the Jewish people who survived the tribulation insanity would become good right wing republican Christians.
This was stuff we had in books, comic books, Bible study etc etc etc. Jews were relegated to being props for our worldwide apocalyptic snuff flick.

Avenatti made himself a public person, so his defamation case would have a higher standard of actual malice. Reading that piece, I’m not sure there’s anything that comes close to actual malice. They quote Avenatti and provide links to sources to back up parts of the story.
This is one of the reasons that attorneys shouldn’t litigate cases on TV like he has been doing. A lot of attorneys end up in disputes with business or law firm partners that can be easily dug up (not to mention claims brought by former clients).

I think this just opened up the War on Avenatti.
People have been looking for a way to attack him and so all guns will be fired now to protect Trump.
It’s going to get ugly.
The other day a few of us discussed Donny Deutsch on Nicole Wallace’s MSBNC show and being a bit protective of Michael Cohen saying his only issues is he is so willing to do anything for His Don. He is friends with Cohen.
I came across this yesterday. Deutsch has real issues with Avenatti and said so on Morning Joke Friday morning.
…
The exchange came as TV personality and guest Donny Deutsch said he believed Avenatti’s status as a fixture on cable news was tantamount to “jumping the shark.”
“You’re starting to feel, as somebody who is in the media and watching the media, a guy who is a losing a little sight of where he is, of the position he’s in, and you almost get the feeling he’s already auditioning for…his next TV spot,” Deutsch said.
Scarborough then noted that Avenatti has been largely successful, reasoning that his appearances are likely part of a larger strategy.
“He’s doing what Trump always does, which is be everywhere, all the time,” Scarborough said. “Be Constantly in peoples faces, and he has actually gotten in Trump’s face.”
Rumors that Avenatti has been angling for his own show have swirled since the charismatic lawyer started stomping the talk show circuit. Critics have accused Avenatti of attempting to try both Trump and embattled attorney Michael Cohen in the press instead of a court of law, an accusation Avenatti has responded to fiercely on Twitter.

I’m not liking our new reality where nothing matters. Obama, with pressure from sanctions, and with the cooperation of other powers, got Iran to give up its nuclear program and submit to a strong inspections regime.
Trump declares it a ‘bad deal’ and the GOP falls in line.
North Korea COMPLETES their nuclear development program, and based on Pompeo’s tweets won’t give up their nukes, but may offer vague happy-sounding promises, and will probably get their sanctions reduced, plus they get to appear in a position of equality with the US - something they’ve sought for decades.
Trump will declare it a ‘great deal, the like of which the world has never seen’, and the GOP will fall in line. They’ll say it’s because he was tough that NK folded, but I don’t think keeping their nukes, keeping their regime, getting sanctions lifted, and joining the rest of the nuclear nations is really what we’d have called ‘folding’.

That was my thought as well, the press have gotten over their momentary flirtation with the Stormy Daniels story and are now beginning to get uncomfortable about how the elements of it are threatening Donny’s presidency. So Tucker Carlson’s digital fish wrap has given them the opportunity to do what they’ve been hinting at for some time: Present Avenatti as a “dirty” lawyer who is exploiting this story to make a lot of money. They’re not going to actually dig into the allegations he’s making because they don’t want to know where they go, so instead they’re going to attack him personally as a way of making the story all about him and drown out the allegations.
Wow!! What we’re basically being told is that “peace” is a nuclear NK capable of continuing to threaten its neighbors in the region, who will provide little more than a pinky-promise to dismantle its ICBM program and scale back its nuclear one, in exchange for sanctions relief and a seat at the Big Boy table in future talks.
So the message again sent is “Get nukes.” Because once you have them, you’re part of the Nuclear Club and thus you’re cool with us…so long as you don’t directly threaten us. Or you do, but your boss has ours by the scrotum.

You know how we defeated Communism? By making it clear that Capitalism could be something other than a rapacious scheme to enrich the rich and impoverish the poor. We did that by regulating it and using it to enrich everyone. It made Americans believe in Capitalism, because they saw that it could be made to work for the population as a whole, instead of just for the few.
But what have the Millennials seen? They’ve seen Capitalism increasingly favor the wealthy, while it fails to provide the same opportunities that their parents and grandparents got when they were young. Why, then, should they feel any particular love for Capitalism?

And lets be honest and upfront here: Soviet Communism defeated itself through unsustainability. We didn’t ‘defeat’ it, we outlasted it. And from the looks of it, we’re starting to collapse from our own unsustainability, masked by just how well the top of the board is doing.

Probably something similar (especially as The Donald has seemingly given the Jerusalem move a fairly limited budget): Up to me, I’d do a minimal remodel at the (former) Consulate to accommodate the official staff - change the signs from “Consulate” to “Embassy”, and leave most everything else back in Tel Aviv (changing the signs from “Embassy” to “Consulate” or “Embassy Annex” or whatever). Thus saving the move money for the important stuff, like publicity for Trump…

I think part of it was a “living memory” thing. By the 1980s, how many people alive actually remembered the Great Depression? Not as a 10 year old with happy memories of playing in the streets with friends, but as a 20 something with no job prospects? Those people would have been in their 70s. Same thing happened with war policy, by 2000 we had very few people left who remembered WWII or even Korea; and nobody really likes to have a legitimate discussion of the red headed stepchild of American wars in Vietnam… so “sure, we can bomb the shit out of these countries, topple their governments and leave, I’m sure nothing bad will follow, they’ll figure things out on their own.”
We now have a generational divide on economics - Boomers who mostly managed to get while the getting was good vs GenXers and Millennials who are mostly screwed with stagnant wages and rising housing costs.

Yep.

Anyone born in Germany after 1985 does not really remember East and West Germany as separate nations.
And West Germany really went out of its way to offer a social market version of capitalism to compete with the East German variant. That is also on its way out.
re: #422 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
We had to compete with Communism and to do so we had to put some limits on Capitalism. Once the opposing ideology was defeated, we stopped trying to rein in the excesses of rapacious capitalism.
It is technological change which is driving the current excesses. Capitalism never had loyalty to a nation. Once it no longer mattered where someone was physically located in order to provide services (except for those that still demand a physical presence such as nursing, etc), a company can shift its workforce anywhere and make a larger profit by paying lower wages and ignoring any safety protocols. Capitalism has always been and remains totally amoral with no concern for anyone other than the owners; see Donald Trump as a perfect example. If nations don’t impose rules that companies are forced to follow, the larger corporations will run roughshod over them.

That is a point I have long made. Capitalism is utterly amoral. It rewards hitmen and drug lords as surely as anything other enterprise that can produce a good people will pay for.

And that is what happens under globalism: capital is free to flow to wherever it finds the highest rate of return. Naturally it flows to places where costs related to worker safety, welfare and health are the lowest.

Trump is the John Birch President.
The old John Birch Society was opposed to everything Russian. But now it has adapted to the age of Trump and has been transformed as surely as the Republican Party.
They’re convinced that kids are “socialists” because they’re too stupid to know any better or they’re indoctrinated. The truth is the right wing version of capitalism is the best recruiting tool socialism ever asked for.

Jeez, the hideous gang is all there—Hagee, Jeffress, Cruz, Huckabee, Adelson, Lindsey Graham, the ever-repulsive Jarvanka and Mnuchin—I think Banshee Jeanine Pirro is there as well.
Not invited: Obama’s Israeli ambassador, Dan Shapiro

We must really hate Israel to send that crew. I’m so sorry.
re: #425 Jay C
Probably something similar (especially as The Donald has seemingly given the Jerusalem move a fairly limited budget): Up to me, I’d do a minimal remodel at the (former) Consulate to accommodate the official staff - change the signs from “Consulate” to “Embassy”, and leave most everything else back in Tel Aviv (changing the signs from “Embassy” to “Consulate” or “Embassy Annex” or whatever). Thus saving the move money for the important stuff, like publicity for Trump…
That’s pretty much what they did. Hence his “we built this city” for pennies on the dollar bullshit.

There is a view of corporate governance, which isn’t exactly the same thing as capitalism but is closely related, called the stakeholder model, which says that the executives and board of directors should consider all stakeholders in a corporation when making decisions - this includes not only shareholders but customers, suppliers, employees, and others they have contracted (and in a broad reading can include the community where they are located). This model has fallen out of favor and been replaced with shareholder supremacy, which argues that the executives and board of directors should only care about getting the highest return on investment for shareholders possible.
The stakeholder model tends to consider longer term objectives and will sacrifice more immediate returns. The shareholder supremacy view, however, tends to favor short term returns because all they care about are dividend payments and stock price. (Not surprisingly, the shareholder supremacy model really took off when stock options became a big selling point in executive compensation.)

The tell of the John Birch society and its successors is that initially they paired Communism with tyranny and massive-scale state violence…the latter condemning the former, but the former guaranteeing the latter…but when tyranny and mass-scale violence were deployed independent of “Communism” they found reasons to excuse it. Including excusing the behavior of post-Communist Russia as it did much the same shit that made the USSR awful (though on a smaller scale, diminished as it was by the breakup of the republic).
What was the core of their opposition, then?

Other than Sheldon Adelson and his wife, and Jared and Ivanka, were there any Jews there???
Ooops, didn’t see Steve Mnuchin… that’s five!

I think they were afraid of losing their power and influence with communism. With right wing dictatorships like that of Putin, they’re fine.

Keep in mind many boomers did not get all while the getting is good. I know many in my age bracket (near or just retired) are not doing all that well. Many are maxed out on loans and cards and still owe on their homes.
Many also gave a lot of what they had to help their children try to get a start.
There are going to be a lot of poor boomers struggling in a few years. You can add them to all the middle class on down folks that are going to be hurting.

A lot of the “Boomer” myth is that they keep extending the “Baby Boom™”. I thought I was right at the end of it (1952) but they kept stretching it out and out to, like 1962, to take in a lot of much younger people. The real Baby-Boomers (born 1946 to ~1950) are the ones who cleaned up. The rest of us, not so much.
re: #401 Citizen K
And lets be honest and upfront here: Soviet Communism defeated itself through unsustainability. We didn’t ‘defeat’ it, we outlasted it. And from the looks of it, we’re starting to collapse from our own unsustainability, masked by just how well the top of the board is doing.
In the Great Depression, we made a conscious choice to save Capitalism by making it work for everyone, based on the observation that NOT doing so allowed Capitalism to tear itself to pieces. Tax the rich heavily, invest in programs for the middle and working classes, regulate banks and finance to limit gambling.
Along about 1980, we made a conscious choice to undo that, based on the erroneous belief that unregulated Capitalism wouldn’t tear itself to pieces. 10 years ago, it did just that. We’ve put a bandage on it that kept it going another decade, but now we have people who didn’t learn from the Great Depression OR the Great Recession running the show, and they want to tear off the bandages.
re: #371 Targetpractice
You know Hillary defended a rapist …
