A Jaw-Dropping Tiny Desk Concert by Miguel Zenón and Spektral Quartet [VIDEO]

Music • Views: 24,629

YouTube

Jan. 4, 2019 | Felix Contreras — Saxophonist Miguel Zenón is a big thinker — that much is clear from his recorded output, with its deep and inspiring connection to the folk traditions of his native Puerto Rico. But you also get that sense from his turn behind the Tiny Desk, where we can watch the concentration on his face and those of his adventurous band, the Spektral Quartet. This is life-affirming music with curious twists and turns, expertly performed by amazingly talented musicians.

There are two ways to marvel at the stunning unison playing that comes about three-quarters of the way through “Milagrosa.” First, listen with your eyes closed. The notes cascade at a such a fast clip, it can leave you breathless. Now, watch with your eyes open: It’s a joy to see Zenón and his band read the notes from the page, at times sneaking in visual cues with smiles just below the surface. It must be such a pleasure to make music like this.

Set List
“Rosario”
“Milagrosa”
“Villabeño”

I’m bringing this over for the late hangers and the early risers just because it’s cool: Lego is selling a Saturn V kit. You can build a 1 meter long rocket with a detachable third stage, a lunar orbiter and lander. It has 1969 pieces: amazon.com My coworker said it took him about 7 hours to build.

By the way, notice the wording in Graham’s tweet. He doesn’t say there’s no path forward for reopening the gov’t, he says there’s no path forward for wall funding even if the gov’t reopens.

The GOP truly are hoping that Donny will made that declaration simply so they have cover to vote to reopen the gov’t without wall funding.

You can in certain instances. However, the way this was pitched was it would be raised for Congress to help fund a racist monument wall. The Constitution leaves appropriations with Congress, not with others such as GoFundMe, even if this had been legitimate.

At lower levels of government that is possible under certain restrictions (such as donations to public libraries or construction projects on behalf of cities or counties).

At the federal level, statutes require donations to the government go into the general fund to be appropriated as Congress directs in compliance with the Constitution.

The NRA is definitely fucked because of the whole Maria Butina thing.

Meanwhile, McConnell has backed himself into a corner by allowing the shutdown and refusing a vote for it to end, which in the short term is a win for him, but he’s fucked in the long-term when his stonewalling inevitably falls apart. That’s nowhere near the great tactician he claims to be.

It does make me wonder sometimes if people like Franklin, Jeffers and Jerry Jr. went all-in on Trump for just a little more than a want of the almighty dollar from their followers.

Jerome Corsi is a major figure in pulpit pimp world and he has practically gone down already. He and his quack lawyer Klayman just won’t admit it yet.
Fact is, the subversion of the 2016 election was only the most egregious of a series of Russian influence operations targeting the American right. These operations go back to at least as early as the first part of the Obama Administration. Jade Helm was in 2015, the NYT article exposing the St. Petersburg troll farm ran in 2014. Their proven attempt to promote crackpot secession movements in Texas and California dates from no later than the middle of 2013. It is highly unlikely that they would ignore the opportunity to exploit an asset as influential and as corrupt as the big time Evangelicals. I don’t know if Graham is involved in this but is not much of a stretch to suggest that he might be.

This isn’t the first time some Kelly Girl’s parents called the cops for a welfare check; the women always say they’re fine, there of their own free will, etc. And a year or two later they’re finally ready to break with him.

Knowing they had somebody who still cared enough to check, that they’d have family to go back to, made it possible for them to eventually find the will to leave the abusive situation.

Cthulhu help us all:

President Donald Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, who works as a White House adviser, is one of the names being considered as a replacement for The World Bank’s outgoing president, Jim Yong Kim, the Financial Times reported Friday.

The DC-based World Bank, founded after World War II to finance economic-development projects in emerging economies, has traditionally been led by an American. Kim’s sudden departure from the bank came as a surprise to employees and leaves the bank’s future uncertain.

The Trump administration, which has been wary of and even hostile toward Western-led international institutions like the World Bank, will now be tasked with submitting a recommendation to the bank’s board.

Other possible American nominees to lead the bank include undersecretary of the Treasury for International Affairs David Malpass, US Agency for International Development director Mark Green, and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, the Financial Times said.

A few weeks ago Y-tube started to recommend Shields and Brooks on PBS. I was surprised PBS still did this segment.
Last week I had to stop watching after Brooks, in reference to the wall debate, blithely said Dems should just give in to Trump because Trump won an election on the Wall.
This week Brooks had the same take. BOTH SIDES, Trump and Pelosi, were at fault because they reside in Towers of Ego.
Mark Shields did a good job laying out the facts.
Brooks thinks paying off Trump with a few billion is what Dems should do.
Republicans are so weazelly with their words. Shields did a good job of push back.

Two scenarios shown in the figure project a substantial warming in the 21st century. For the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 2.6 scenario, the models project an ocean warming (0 to 2000 m) of 1037 zettajoules (ZJ) (~0.40 K) at the end of the 21st century
(mean of 2081-2100 relative to 1991-2005); this pathway is close to the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to well below 2°C. For the RCP8.5 scenario, a business as-usual scenario with high greenhouse gas emissions, the models project a warming of 2020 ZJ (~0.78 K). This level of warming would have major impacts on ocean ecosystems and sea level rise through thermal expansion; 0.78 K warming at 2100 is roughly equal to a sea level rise of 30 cm. This is in addition to increased sea level rise caused byland ice melt.

The fairly steady rise in OHC shows that the planet is clearly warming. The prospects for much higher OHC, sea level, and sea-surface temperatures should be of concern given the abundant evidence of effects on storms, hurricanes, and the hydrological cycle, including extreme precipitation events (3, 15). There is a clear need to continue to improve the ocean observation and analysis system to provide better estimates of OHC, because it will enable more refined regional projections of the future. In addition, the need to slow or stop the rates of climate change and prepare for the expected impacts is increasingly evident.

A few years back, here on LGF, I had commented in regards to answering some about climate change during the alleged (really made-up) “hiatus” that the net heat increase in the climate was likely going into the ocean… as many climatologists and oceanographers had expected. Subsequent data has proven their assertions.

The earth stores most of the surface heat in the ocean, only a tiny bit in the atmosphere. Indeed, were it not for the fact that the earth’s surface is mostly covered in water we’d be much colder than we are. Warmer than the moon which has no atmosphere, but not warm enough for life.

Ocean, and ice cap, dynamics are so slow compared to the news cycle that there is no real political traction for dealing with this issue.

So if our legal system is working properly, what is the next step to make sure the multiple perpetrators of espionage and treason and who knows what else are brought to justice? I understand due process and investigations take time, but every minute this isn’t stopped means more harm it could take years to repair, if that’s possible. It’s become so blatant now that they are daring someone to stop them. And it’s not going to stop until it is physically stopped somehow.

This is kinda where my hopelessness kicks in so I’ll spare you all that.

Kind of shocked that this whole wall gofundme scam isn’t a bigger story yet:

Great thread, it’s about the email addresses, oh and, the folks that mailed in donations look like they are hosed.

Ripping off over 300,000 wingnuts or at least trying too, should be huge news?

Surely this will open the eyes of at least 1 or 2 of them?

Where are all of the stories of the poor, stupid, gullible wingnuts who sent in money they couldn’t afford to send in?

Yeah, GFM has been a great platform for in many respects but it is a conman’s dream too. It almost seems like a pity porn site? I have given there before and the spam they send of other recommendations of people I should give money too really disgusts me.

I’ve been up since the crack of oh my g-d it’s early and catching up on yesterday’s threads. I read the New Yorker article on Gabbard, and this is my take:

She seems like a very typical Republican in that her personal experience seems to be the driving force in what she cares about domestically. Her past homophobia is only discarded when she wants to run for office in a blue, blue state. Yes, she came up with a good story but color me cynical and suspicious. To me, the Clintons and Obama have a disappointing history in public statements and policies regarding LGBTQ rights and eventually got there. But they (to the best of my knowledge) never prompted an active anti-LGBTQ agenda like Gabbard and her family.

The other thing that stood out to me in the article is that Trey Gowdy is one of her besties in Congress. Let that sink in.

Morning!

First actual snow to hit Columbus is ongoing. There is a light coating out there right now and some flurries. I guess it is supposed to go on and off all day into the early morning. Some reports say up to 5 inches. We shall see.

Worst thing is temps just over freezing starting tomorrow and then of course freezing at night. Argh. That means ice and slop.

But hey! How about that failing New York Times article?

Had a good jam/song practice sessions last night. The new combination of my cousin Rick (guitar/keyboards) and his friend Joe (Bass/guitar) joining up with me and my longtime friend and guitarist Terry is starting to find a groove no the songs I have written.

So it was just after midnight before I got back to look what was going at LGF and also flipped on MSNBC with Joy Reid going over the times article. Wow! Just wow!

I still need to read the last thread through to get caught up.

By the way…I see Trump’s tweet calling out the “failing New York Times.” I’m not a huge fan of some of their reporting, but how long have they been failing Big Ass Donny?

I guess “failing” is much like Trump’s use of “emergency.” Bullshit.

It will be interesting to see how much further pressure the Times article puts on this whole shutdown/crisis mess.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump (or whoever’s spewing his tweets this AM) is going on epic rant about Russia, FBI, Clinton, and angry Democrats that’s about as unhinged and fact-free as ever.

I can’t quite put my finger on why they’re at this.

Is it because McConnell shut down the Senate over the weekend and therefore the longest GOP/Trump shutdown continues with no end in sight?

Is it because Trump took credit for the shutdown and a majority of people polled blame him explicitly for the shutdown?

Is it because there’s no crisis at the border and that he’s manufactured this nonsense and there’s no support for it, even among the GOPers in Congress.

Is it because a clean CR would pass Congress and have potential votes available for a veto override that would embarrass Trump (and that’s why McConnell ducked out of town?)?

Is it because news stories keep dropping about how Trump is up to his eyeballs in Russia chicanery and the ties are becoming more defined and evidence is piling up that he and those involved in his campaign conspired with foreign agents to manipulate outcome of election?

All of it.

It’s because of all of it. Trump’s walls are closing in - and will soon be the bars he so craves. It can’t come soon enough frankly for all the damage he’s done to the nation, its political institutions, and the Office of the President. Oh, and the GOP must be swept from power for conspiring with Trump and aiding/abetting/condoning Trump’s criminality by refusing to be a check and balance on Trumpworld malfeasance.

I’m going to have a four tier system of candidates: Those I really like, those I like but want to learn more, those I don’t really dislike but think could be better, and those I don’t want at all
Tier one: Beto, Harris, Booker, Biden, Klobuchar
Tier two: Brown, Garcetti, Gillibrand, Inslee, Castro,
Tier three: McAuliffe, Warren, Delaney
Tier four: Bernie, Tulsi, Bloomberg,

I was reading a DK diary about AOC’s “New party, who dis?” jab at Lieberman, and I realized something else: She’s also the face of all those new women in Congress, all those women who Republicans - and quite a few Democrats I’m sure (and I’m not counting Lieberman in that group) would love to make sure they quietly sit there and wait their turn.

Here’s the thing, with Trump in the White House, there’s no sitting and waiting their turn. They were voted in to counter him and to deal with things like unequal treatment dealt to the poor, women, minorities, and non-Christian religions.

So, once again, she really can’t just back down. I don’t think she volunteered for this job, but various groups chose her because of her being a Democratic Socialist. But they obviously chose the wrong person. Next time, I would recommend not choosing a bartender.

It’s so weird how lefties think she’s this huge dove because she was critical of Obama’s Syria policy. She’s not. It actually kind of reminds me of people who liked Bob Graham in 2004 thinking that he was a huge dove on Iraq when he wasn’t.

Tier One: Harris, Booker, Warren, Gillibrand (no order ranking yet)
Tier Two: Beto, Brown, Garcetti, Inslee, Castro
Tier Three: McAuliffe, Delaney
Tier Four: Bloomberg, Biden
Tier Five (don’t just go away.. go home): Bernie, Tulsi.

Lieberman was threatened by Obama too. I have no idea why Brian felt so eager to go to bat for a guy who hasn’t supported a Democratic presidential candidate since John Kerry, when AOC and myself were unable to vote due to our ages.

Absolutely. I’d like to see more of Inslee. I’m impressed by the resume but I need to get to know the man better. But on paper there’s a lot I like, Governor, former Congressman, seems quite intelligent and well versed on the issues but I want to see more of his style. Maybe one of these days I should ask my friend whom I grew up with who now lives in Washington state what her verdict on him is but we don’t talk politics much even though I know we agree more than we don’t.

I don’t think it’s being mentioned enough just how much McConnell totally played himself here. Unlike Trump, he has only one way out… allowing a veto-proof CR vote… and it will humiliate him and destroy his Machiavellian façade of being this calculating tactician.

When lackeys like Lindsey and Rubio are now pleading for Trump to go the “emergency” declaration route, it’s McConnell they want to save. Not Trump. They can’t afford to have him back down, because when he does, it’s an admission of guilt that McConnell was to blame for the whole thing. It’s a con in and of itself, just like this racist wall being the last lingering element of the Great Trump Con that’s inevitably going to come crashing down.

Only problem is, Pelosi IS the brilliant tactician McConnell has always claimed to be, and she’s now emboldened Sen. Schumer. And the polls are showing that the GOP’s ridiculous stonewalling is starting to undo all the demonizing they’ve unleashed on her since the early 2000s.

I couldn’t resist because the pun was just perfect. Definitely wasn’t trying to school ya. I read him too both senior year and in one of my literature courses. Two comments:
1. Agree about McConnell: for a guy who’s supposed to be this iron-fisted Senate Leader, he’s backed himself into an unpleasant corner over the “Wall/Trump Shutdown”: I would have thought that he would have, by now, come up with some sort of face-saving compromise (one agreed to between Republicans and Democrats in both Houses)
that would get the government re-opened, and still leave The Orange Anus with some sort of Wall bullshit or other that would let him declare “victory”, and everyone can all move on to the next crisis.
But as it happened, McConnell, who was expecting the main problem to come from the Democrats, got sandbagged by “his own” WH instead. [Womp Womp…]
2. It should be noted that that years-long GOP “demonization” of Nancy Pelosi has been usually based mainly on ideological grounds (“loony-left San Francisco liberal”, etc.) ignoring her considerable political skills - honed even sharper by years in the Minority. Sort of the converse of their regard of former Speaker Paul Ryan: hailed (by GOPers) as some sort of genius/visionary because he pushed for all the right pro-oligarchal policies, but as a political leader in the House, all but useless.

Ah. Then be sure to reread Wilfred Owens and Siegfried Sassoon in the light of the literature. And “Farewell” remains the only thing that must be read by him. The rest of his output is just the same story, with different names. But Farewell gave us this:

“If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.”

Yep, I picked up a collection of the poems in a bookstore in Ypres. I keep it alongside my pocket sized Constitution I got from the ACLU, my wit and wisdom of Lincoln, Instructions for British Servicemen in Germany 1944, my Art of War, and my Irish Quotations and of course in close proxmity to my bartender’s bible.

Yep, that’s the guy. I looked for it on the Kindle to no avail. I’ll just order a hardcopy. I’m still finishing Guns of August and then I’m on to Birdsong by Faulks, recommended to me by a Belgian WWI tour guide I met in Ypres a couple years ago.

I got through most of Birdsong but then my Kindle died. I was lucky to find a second-edition German version of Im Westen nichts neues (All Quiet on the Western Front). Also bought the movie, which is one of the rare examples of when I watch a film with the German soundtrack rather than the original.

Sooo much this. I used to think campaigns were way too long, but now I am glad for the level of vetting our candidates get. Right now my view is “let a thousand flowers bloom.” Anyone who wants to run, show us what you’ve got.

I do look askance at old white guys right now. Not that I would never vote for one (I would vote even for Bernie if he were running against Trump). But the excitement and energy unleashed by the younger, less white, more female midterms is such a force of nature, I’d hate to see it squashed by playing it safe with someone like Biden.

I really think it’s key that we have new perspectives which is why I’m so excited to see such a diverse field developing not just in race and ethnicity but gender and age too. Multiple women and women of color at that running will be the new norm and that’s great.

It is time for some of the older Dems who are flirting with the presidential nomination to step aside and assume the role of elder statespeople or just stay in Congress. I think Elizabeth Warren is more effective as a Senator. Even though she’s not my Senator, she does good for everyone. Kind of like when famous people (like Oprah) get bandied about in the press. The world split off into different timelines a few years ago and we drew the short straw.

I have a theory that we are in the midst of a time-travel war, in which factions from the future are disrupting events on our timeline. This is based only on the feeling of reality having jumped off the rails in 2016, and the normal course of events leaping around like a scared squirrel at random.

Mabye in the future, an immortal Cyborg Hillary Clinton reigned over a “progressive globalist” world, and a “resistance” faction of Republicans hiding out in Russia sent someone back to set up an election-throwing effort with Putin to make sure Clinton never happened. And it’s been move-countermove on our timeline ever since.

//come on, it’s at least as likely as anything else

Right, I like a little of both which is why I want to learn more about Klobuchar. She’s not really young and an upstart like Obama is but she’s not someone who has been around Washington forever too. What I want is someone who will be a strong defender of our values not just as Democrats but as Americans and someone who will lead on key issues and someone who will surround themselves with not only smart but decent people too.

Exactly right. And that’s why Pelosi is back in as House speaker and Ryan is on the fast track to irrelevance.

re: #173 lawhawk

Applying your tier structure, I’d reorganize (and yeah, it’s my preferences) thusly:

Tier One: Harris, Booker, Warren, Gillibrand (no order ranking yet)
Tier Two: Beto, Brown, Garcetti, Inslee, Castro
Tier Three: McAuliffe, Delaney
Tier Four: Bloomberg, Biden
Tier Five (don’t just go away.. go home): Bernie, Tulsi.

Bloomberg would make an excellent President. He has real world governing experience and extensive knowledge of economics; he would also double-down on Michelle’s healthy eating campaigns. However, he would have to be at least 15 years younger to have a serious chance of competing and even then, it’s unlikely that he could win. So putting him in tier four makes sense.

289
HappyWarrior  Jan 12, 2019 • 9:29:54am

With Biden, I like the guy a lot but I concede he’s a little old fashioned. Someone posted an article, maybe I read it here but it basically said that Biden can come off a little old fashioned like when he talked about how he wanted to kick Trump’s ass behind the gym after the pussy tapes. And you know what, I get the sentiment especially for him as a man with a daughter and granddaughters but I don’t know. I just see how our coalition elected many men and women of diverse backgrounds to Congress and think our standard bearer being a 77 year old white guy nicknamed Uncle Joe wouldn’t excite people. You pair someone younger and or non white or male like Beto, Harris, Gillirband with someone like Duckworth, Baldwin, Castro, among other names and I think you’ll excite people. Some people insist this is identity politics but this is more an acknowledgment that there are plenty of qualified men and women of color in our party and if their presence on a ticket would excite the base then go for it. And if we have someone who is bi or even multilingual all the better.

re: #248 Pawn of the Oppressor

Trying to think this through. If the GOP gets decimated by Russia investigation fallout, imho more likely than not, there will be a vacuum of various powers and influences, mostly good of course but necessarily some bad. Real administrative experience and the connections to make things run smoothly than has a higher premium by way or rarity.

New people make mistakes, need the room to do so without catastrophe as a result, for their own careers as well as the rest. High stakes nurturing.

Remember, this was TOTALLY avoidable. There was a clean CR ready to go, but President shitweasel wouldn’t sign it because he decided throw a tantrum over his fucking wall.

Also of note: Republicans have been responsible for the three longest shutdowns of the past 25 years.

Why does everyone continue to blame Trump? It’s Paul Ryan that could have stopped this last year; it’s McConnell that could stop it this year. Trump could have declared an “emergency” back on Tuesday night when he had the opportunity. That he didn’t makes it feel like an empty threat.

It’s almost a total carbon copy of when the rumors of firing Evil Keebler Elf Sessions and/or Rod Rosenstein — so as to shut the Muller investigation down — kept being floated about over the past two years. Heck, that was informally the real reason why Lex Luthor was selected to replace Sessions. But … none of that actually came to pass. Rosenstein is still there and Muller is still working on the investigation, if not already prepping to wrap it up.

Trump is not only full of shit, but he’s either too chicken to actually follow through on his varied threats… or is continuously told not to follow through by the few remaining competent advisors in his circle, and he can’t help himself by boasting empty promises.

And the Democratic leadership not only knows this right off the gate, they are undoubtedly convinced he’ll eventually fold like a paper napkin. His stonewalling is as much of a con as his racist wall is, they know it, and everyone not pledging total fealty to Trump knows it.

Because for Trump, it’s already too late.

It’s interesting. My maternal grandfather’s name has three variants. How his grandmother’s descendants spell it in Slovenia, how his parents did here in the US, & how he and his brothers did and how my mom she married, It gets less and less Slavic sounding as we get closer to the present. And my grandmother’s name the spelling is the same here as in Slovakia but the pronouncing changes.

I suspect that a major part of Biden’s attractiveness is the fact that he has been ‘vetted’. That is that he has shown repeatedly he will stay within the ‘rails’ of American Governance. In the face of the current administration, that will be important.

And, as several of the posters have pointed out, Biden has other ways to add the reassurance, beyond running as a candidate.

Personally, I’m hoping for one of the younger candidates to be the nominee. As has been pointed out, Biden’s long career has created a lot of policy positions that he can be attacked on, like his vote for the Iraq War and for DOMA. It may not be fair, but it’s politics. Plus I think since the Democratic coalition skews younger, a younger candidate can inspire more enthusiasm in the voters we need to get to the polls.

Looks like NYS is finally moving ahead with the voter registration reforms that have been long needed. There’s a slate of bills that are under consideration and some could be enacted this year in time for 2020.

The proposals are a veritable wish list for those who have blamed New York’s laws for driving down voter turnout. The measures include allowing early voting, preregistration of 16- and 17-year-olds and consolidating state and federal primary elections, which are now held in different months.

Lawmakers also plan to pass bills to allow vote-by-mail and same-day voter registration, though those proposals will also require voter referendums — and passage by the next Legislature, scheduled to be seated in 2021 — as they change the State Constitution.

Some require a referendum, which means that the earliest that they’d take effect is 2021, because they amend the state constitution.

That narrative has been floating around for awhile. Even got to the point of rumors that those two (and even Sessions) wanted to invoke the 25th amendment.

They knew Trump was debasing them, and clearly were trying to create those rumors to save themselves as early as the middle of 2017.

My name is most common in the US, followed by England, and is spread throughout the empire. Belize has the highest number of Cobbs per capita!

It’s interesting to read people’s thinking on who they might think would make the best presidential candidate. I’m still learning about various people and their positions, so I don’t have a clear choice. That said, a bowl of rocks would be better than what we have now.

As for my surname based on that website, I think LGF needs to declare me an endangered species.

re: #354 NO SMOCKING GUN!

I agree with you that it is more better for a younger candidate to run. Age 70+ has way too many risks. For health, cognitive issues, mental and physical energy, focus levels, for flexibility.

And, yes, the Democrats need to involve the next generation into politics. First on the scene gets to stake out the territory and define the future. Getting stuck in the battles of the past will distract from that. To include Biden’s positions on long gone fights.

Mines - 1,034,354th - no known meaning; prevalence and density, US.

It’s a modified German/Frankish from something. Not a lot of us. Claims ~241 people claim this surname.

Mine: 12,185th
US: 29,601

But the family story is that it was changed at Ellis Island. My father’s cousin had a different spelling. The largest number is in the US, with Germany and Austria 2nd and 3rd, except my father’s family was from Poland.

Edited: Original count had typo

That’s a really cool site. I put in my name and found that there are fewer than 5,000 people in the world with my surname.

I’m not sure how they gather data, but I presume any person who changed a maiden name to a hub’s surname (or much less frequently the other way round) would be lost in that.

My wife’s surname is much more common than mine (plus more interesting, since she’s related to a prominent bank robber gang in the XIX Century).

Kasich is no moderate (MSNBC)

But a look at both his record and his policies makes clear that Kasich is no moderate. From taxes to climate change, Kasich assiduously toes the line of modern Republican orthodoxy, which is to say, he’s a staunch conservative. And on some issues he goes even further. If Kasich does somehow emerge as the GOP nominee, it likely wouldn’t take Democrats long to highlight some of these stances—and undermine his moderate credentials.

Yeah yours is even less so than mine. With mine, there’s not a lot of us in my branch with the name since my dad was the only son to have sons and his only uncle’s son didn’t have kids and my grandfather’s uncles if they had sons had sons who only had girls. Have to go to my second grandfather’s brother to see sons having sons. My German cousin tells me there’s no one left in the home area with our name. Her great grandmother was dad’s great grandfather’s sister.

my mom’s maiden name is fairly common until you plug in the missing “z” that my grandfather dropped from the name when he arrived at Ellis Island.
With the “z” included, the site says there are only six people with that surname, mostly in Mexico, the rest in Slovakia.
I know the ones in Mexico are Jewish. Kind of funny that, because when I was younger, my family often got mistaken for Jewish (we were RC, and my grandfather was Rom).

Mine is German based. From the German meaning ‘cellar’. Often meaning winemaker. And is particularly concentrated in the German speaking parts of Switzerland.

But, apparently, there is also an Anglicized Gaelic from “Ó Céilechair”, descendant of Céilechair, from County Clare. The Anglicized surname in Ireland has many different spellings including: O’Kelleher, Kelaher, Kelliher, Kellar, Keller, McKeller, MacKeller, and O’Keller.

Reagan sank Ford’s re-election chances in 1976. Kasich knows he’ll never be nominated but, unlike DeWine (gag) he openly hates Trump. I can see it legit happening.

In the event Pence somehow (survives this investigation and) ascends to POTUS, a Kasich campaign will be a long, dragged out insurgency that only impairs Pence’s chances that November.

It’s not that conservatism in itself is a racist ideology. It’s that racism and conservatism in this country often go hand and hand.

Ford sank his own chance when he blew a simple debate question on Poland. There were several factors working against him — and Reagan didn’t make the list.

But can he hurt Trump if he does? Hogan or Baker wouldn’t but I think Kasich could.

It could be that there are Republicans who have drifted into calling themselves Independents because they can’t stand Trump, and maybe if Kasich ran against Trump they would vote for him in the primaries. If he could shock the world with a 30% share in the NH primary, that could cause consternation in Trumpworld.

910,956th
Most Common
Surname in the World

Approximately 290 people bear this surname
Most prevalent in:
United States
Highest density in:
Australia

Got you beat!

Mine is 1,108,364.* most common surname in the world.

*with conditions, as I have always suspected.

If you type my last name in the software it gives me choices based on some accents on either the š or ä or no accents.

With the š it goes right to Slovakia with 218 under incidence, but zero in the USA.

With no accent it is the 12,361st most common name with 45,919 listed under incidence.

What we were always told is the name is common but Americanized. I’ve seen sites like this before and if I use the non-accented spelling it comes up as all kinds of nationalities.

But I know I am 50% Slovakian. So, it obviously a pronunciation thing.

I’m going with the Slovakian pronunciation/spelling and the rarity. It’s cooler!

This part of a Vanity Fair article, September 1990.

Donald Trump appears to take aspects of his German background seriously. John Walter works for the Trump Organization, and when he visits Donald in his office, Ivana told a friend, he clicks his heels and says, “Heil Hitler,” possibly as a family joke.

Last April, perhaps in a surge of Czech nationalism, Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed. Kennedy now guards a copy of My New Order in a closet at his office, as if it were a grenade. Hitler’s speeches, from his earliest days up through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a master propagandist.

“Did your cousin John give you the Hitler speeches?” I asked Trump.

Trump hesitated. “Who told you that?”

It wasn’t his cousin John; it was a friend Marty Davis who gave him the book of Hitler speeches. At that time he may actually have read material from the books — today, it’s difficult to think that he would read anything longer than a page.

Compared to either Trump or Pence, Kasich is a model of probity, thoughtfulness, and progress. He also comes across as sympathetic to immigrants.

You really need to learn more about Kasich!

He has some pluses on immigration. He can be progressive to some degree. But when he turns into a raging asshole thoughtfulness goes right out the door.

Probity…that needs a long discussion. His character and morality, etc., is moderated by what he wants to get. He can be a snake and a liar. He can be mean.

And in a lot of ways he can be Pence, just way smarter and more cunning. He can be deceitful.

I’ve followed Kasich since he entered Ohio politics. Living in Columbus you can’t get away from him.

re: #430 HappyWarrior

When Trump is your standard bearer, you don’t get to complain about being accused of racism, conservatives. Obviously not every conservative is a racist but nearly every conservative has an ugly indifference to racism and its effects.

Lets face it, the GOP is now a fascist party. They have given up on Democracy and are openly calling on Trump to rule by decree, something Matthew Yglesias predicted even before Trump was nominated for President. Racial or ethnic nationalism is a core element of fascism, and its going to be exceedingly difficult for the GOP to wrench itself away from that to reform itself into a party based on conservative principles instead of white nationalism.

a good deal warmer so the pre standing around was easier. and I got to run in shorts

turned in a solid performance given i flew the races the last 2 days and the full mary is on for tomorrow.

I got a shout out from the announcer at the finish line. (tech - they know who you are and where you are)

and it’s nice having mrs dm at the finish. no we don’t hug. I’m all soggy and drippy….

so 3 down and pounded just half the miles

for me these 4 days are all about the run. race, recovery, eating, resting.

Rainy day here in SoCal and to muddy to ride or hike. To fill my time I watched Icarus on Netflix. Well worth your time - the scenes with Putin (mostly 2015 and 2016 ) reverberate in ways that make our present situation just a notch scarier… The references to 1984 make me want to re-read the book as an adult instead of the high school student I was when I read it.
Here is a synopsis from IMDB:
Filmmaker and avid amateur cyclist Bryan Fogel decides to make a documentary on how easy it is to get away with doping in sport. He sets out to take illegal performance-enhancing substances, improve his cycling performance and show that the substances are undetectable. His task leads him to Grigory Rodchenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory. Little does Fogel realize at the time but he is about to be involved in, and a chronicler of, sport’s greatest ever doping scandal, as details are revealed of Russia’s systemic, widespread, government-sponsored doping program.
