Turn of your tee vee
Throw away your papers
Move to the country
Build us a home
Have a lot of children
Feed 'em on peaches
Try and find Jesus
On your own.

I think it's kind of creepy he's conflating a life lesson with his father with the current state of the nation and then breaking down in tears. He needs help.

I always said that beck was going to have his "Howard Beale" moment on TV one night, but I just didn't know when. But now it dawns on me that he has "mini Howard Beale" moments 2-3 times each week. But since the "normal" glenn beck is so "out there," it's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Everything looks worse in black and white. - Kodachrome, Simon & that other guy.

nostalgia has its place, I suppose, but it cannot be a substitute for a rational consideration of the affairs of the day. An old Coke commercial is nice, as a piece of history, I suppose, but it's largely irrelevant to anything other than a discussion of old Coke commercials.

"simpler times"

This is a loaded phrase like "family values," and it's highly subjective. Even if we take Beck's sincerity at face value, I'd be skeptical and outright suspicious of any politician who promised "simpler times" for the US. ESPECIALLY if the politician was conservative, because I am reasonably certain what that would mean.

He does this all the time. It's so routine now that his audience is bound to get bored with it sooner or later.

Roger Ailes (FNC's head honco) has to know the negative effect beck is having on the network's credibility, but the monster ratings are hard to pass up. So perhaps Ailes is simply going to let beck keep going until he has that nuclear meltdown (the really big one we have yet to see) and then his decision to pull the plug on beck will essentially be made for him. But in the meantime, beck's numbers from 5-6pm ET lift FNC's average rating for the day by a significant amount, thus allowing FNC to charge higher rates for their ads on all its shows, not just beck's. Just a thought from a cynical TV producer!

Yeah, I think he's just trying to appeal to the regressive instinct among his viewers.

I've noticed that tendency in Conservative culture for a few years now... the longing for an idealized past, some idyllic model of life to be preserved like a fly in amber, or restored... faux melancholy over an imaginary fall from grace. I see it as an extension of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden theme, culturally -- and an inability to cope with the present and the future, thus retreating into the past from comfort -- psychologically. No matter the angle, it's f***ed.

80 BARACK THE VOTE  Thu, Oct 15, 2009 5:32:36pm

I think Beck only recently watched the end of Season 1 of Mad Men, where Don Draper makes that Kodak presentation.

Draper is pitching a fantasy about America and about the family, while knowing all the time that it's a total lie.

Throughout the season, Don Draper - all while slowly revealing to us his true identity - has been sleeping around behind his wife's back who, not the dimwit she's painted to be, knows her husband is cheating on her and cunningly reveals it to her psychologist knowing full well (because she sneaked a peek at the phone bill) the doctor will tell her husband saving her from the confrontation.

In the end, and due in big part to his preparation for the Kodak pitch, Don realizes he's got a great family and that he'd be wise not to rick losing it as he did his first family. In the final scene, we see him come home from work and tell his family he would, after all, go with them on on the family trip he'd earlier said he wouldn't. This being a television drama that needs tension to maintain viewership, we quickly see that scene was all in his head and when he opened the door to his house the second time, it was empty and his family and left without him.

In other words, it's all about self-delusion, lies, and cynical conscious manipulation of the public.

Glenn Beck is no Don Draper, but he likewise makes a living peddling bullshit.

A while ago I actually sat down and watched Beck’s whole show. At the end I still didn’t get it. Why would even fox put this stuff on air and why would so many people watch it?

But then, life is full of mysteries

It's because Birch Society members have been working for 20+ years at building up their own inter-connected propaganda machine:

It is a telling marker of the ideological cohesiveness and extremism of this core group of philanthropies that three of the five founding members, Joseph Coors, David Koch and Harry Bradley, were members and financial supporters of the John Birch Society. The Scaife foundations, headed by Richard Mellon Scaife, are also involved, albeit in less direct ways.

In the past 20 years this core group of funders has, by many reports, built and strategically linked an impressive array of almost 500 think tanks, centers, institutes and "concerned citizens groups" both within and outside of the academy. It is particularly telling to observe the funding sources of these organizations during the first 10-15 years of their existence, when their ideological identities were being established. A small sampling of these entities include the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, the Manhattan Institute, the Hoover Institution, the Claremont Institute, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, Middle East Forum, Accuracy in Media, and the National Association of Scholars, as well as Horowitz's Center of the Study of Popular Culture.

Just like some lefties "boycot" Walmart. This means they'll say they're boycotting it, won't watch the NFL for one week, and then go back to it thinking the most popular sport in America learned its lesson from 1500 dipshits watching re-runs of Monk on a single Sunday instead of Week 6.

I'm boycotting the NFL this week too, but it's because the Cowboys aren't playing.

Cowboys!...I'm a fan and they need a time out, meanwhile I'm gonna watch the Saints pound the Giants

OT:

The Daily Mail has published a somewhat sceptical article in their Science & Tech page.

Whatever happened to global warming?

The cooling, I have read, is part of a larger cycle of climate deregulation. People tend to think in terms of hot/cold, but the reality of GW is much more intricate. The extremes apparently perfectly correspond to what has been expected to occur...

Before the warming goes off the deep end.

"Mojib Latif, a member of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), stressed the impact of the ocean currents in the North Atlantic - a phenomenon called the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Atlantic Meridional Oscillation.
He believes we may be in a period of cooling - but that it will be temporary before global warming reasserts itself.
He said the NAO may have been responsible for some of the rapid rise in temperatures of the last three decades.
'But how much? The jury is still out,' he said.
So is the sun really going down on global warming?
The Met Office is not convinced.
They incorporate solar and oceanic cycles into their models, and they say that - even if there are periods of slower warming, or temporary cooling, the long-term trend in global temperatures is still on the up."

That Mean Joe Greene commercial was from 1979 -- hardly the USA's golden era.

More cognitive dissonance. The crying alone goes against the "beta male" meme we hear about frequently in blogs that support Glenn Beck (e.g. Hot Air).

The 1979 bit is a kick in the pants because Jimmy Carter was in his second year of office. Last time I checked Carter wasn't popular with Beck audience members.

The Cold War was still present including the Iranian Revolution of 1979 amongst other crazy things. Total murders in the United States for 1979 was 21,460 compared to 16,272 in 2008.

This Norman Rockwell fetishization of America complete with childish emotions is just plain creepy.

Especially when one considers that Rockwell's work for the Saturday Evening Post was just one facet of his artistic output. The man knew how to tackle tough social subjects with a nuance, depth, and complexity that totally escapes those who hold his SEP work as the preferred iconography for a simplistic constructed narrative of that era.

My personal favorite NR painting, "New Kids in the Neighborhood."

Setup in that the parent put the kid up to it, the organizers of the event did or it was coordinated with the administration?

Maybe I'm a bit naive, but my assumption is that many a parent and child on the way to such an event would discuss what question they might ask if called on, and if a child came up with a question like the one the six year old asked, the parent perhaps thinks it's cute and encourages their child to raise their hand once the Q&A begins (or does it for them).

I was absent that day, and the administration wouldn't even review my question to see if it was good enough. I would disagree with you, being truly libertarian, does not make one close to anarchy. That is like saying being a democrat makes you close to a socialist (which I know seems to be popular to say these days among some), but we all know that is not true.
We could just be arguing semantics. I'm 30 so for my entire life the Republican party has been 30-50% filled with the religious right. I believe the religious right (and thus the GOP) supports policies that I believe are as restrictive and anti-liberty as many of the policies on the left.

In simpler times, women and Negros knew our places, and gas was cheap. I don't think I'm being mean by assuming that's what he means, because honestly, what time in American history has ever been simple?

True, the Cowboys were 13-3. The talent that they had on that team that year they should have won the super bowl, but they didn't. Tony Romo threw a horrible pass in the last seconds of the NFC Championship game and lost the game. If it is a process how long is it going to take Tony Romo? He has been surrounded by an excellent offensive line, has a great running back, and was throwing to T.O. What more can a quarterback ask for. Look at what Payton Manning has done with less in some years.

John Gruden is a potential coach for everyone it seems. The Cowboys, the Redskins, the Raiders again after Tom Cable goes to jail, San Diego if they don't get their shit straight. NC State, Lebron James' old high school, and Team USA soccer.

Team USA seems to be in good hands. 2010 should be fun.

I have no idea what he is talking about. Never seen that coke commercial. Never heard of Paul Anka. No relation to this fabricated nostalgia. And the party, driving there, past midnight, pot, beer spilled all over you, your parents,... huh? I can't freaking believe people watch this dung for fun. It makes my brain hurt and doesn't make any sense. He's pandering to this ill-defined nostalgia, the wistfulness for the good ol' days,... all too common among conservatives, or should I say, reactionaries. Just another symptom of mental disease.

I've seen the Coke commercial. I was six. It's nostalgic, in the sense that 'Hey! I was six when that was on TV!"

The world was not better back then. It was definitely simpler, for me, because my mommy and daddy made all the decisions except for whether I wanted apple juice or orange juice after school. But I grew out of that.

.. the longing for an idealized past, some idyllic model of life to be preserved like a fly in amber, or restored... faux melancholy over an imaginary fall from grace. I see it as an extension of the expulsion from the Garden of Eden theme, culturally -- and an inability to cope with the present and the future, thus retreating into the past from comfort -- psychologically. No matter the angle, it's f***ed

Forget about Beck for a minute.
Print out these lines and tuck them away for 30 years. Pull them out when more of your life is behind you than ahead of you. Substitute your own memorable commercial and songwriter and I'll bet you'll be more tolerant of "idyllic models of the past". And Paul Anka.
To 'duck and cover' in grade school and party with my old friends from high school isn't possible, but if I could do it again, I would.
Back to Beck... Light him up. He deserves it for crying like a wuss.

Yes. That's exactly what I was getting at. Women chained to a stove/denied access to employment & education, valued only by the productivity of their uterus; gay Americans forced into the closet, stripped of equal treatment in employment/housing; prayer forced back into public schools; increase in xenophobia; abortion outlawed, birth control restricted, etc.

NO THANKS.

Sexual and physical abuse dismissed and covered up for the sake of the 'family'. Lynching. (How far back to we want to go with this?) Pregnant teenagers forced to give up their children in closed adoptions they had no voice in. Incessant smoking. No rights for the disabled or the retarded, often no education for these people. (How far back are we going?)

I mean, there's a lot of good stuff back there too, don't get me wrong, but this hazy-dazy crap is just silly. We are who we are. We are when we are. All we can do is be as good as we can be, which is what every previous generation of Americans had to do--and that worked out OK.

Ah, yes, the good old days again, a simpler time when all was folksy roses and our LaSalle ran great.
I was born in 1949. I remember the "good old days." When young loafers were carted away by the draft, drunks could come home and beat their wives with impunity, rapists got off because "she asked for it," women in the workplace could either put out or quit when the fat-ass boss leaned on them, corrupt cops could beat people who had the wrong haircut. Going further back, I remember "whites only" signs and death trap tail-finned Bulgemobiles with 300 hp but no seatbelts and migrant workers who looked like (and actually were) starving refugees and the polio epidemic.

Right now, with all its problems and fears and insanity, is the best time in human history to be alive. This is the world I helped build and I am proud of it. It is a long way from being perfect but it is a hell of a lot better than the one I grew up in.

Hilariously, the GOP website lists Robinson as one of its republican heroes...despite the fact that Robinson was an independent and had this to say about the RNC in 1964:

That convention was one of the most unforgettable and frightening experiences of my life. The hatred I saw was unique to me because it was hatred directed against a white man. It embodied a revulsion for all he stood for, including his enlightened attitude towards black people.

A new breed of Republicans had taken over the GOP. As I watched this steamroller operation in San Francisco, I had a better understanding of how it must have felt to be a Jew in Hitler’s Germany.

Golden Age mythology is one of the longest running, most ridiculous, and most destructive types of propaganda ever foisted on a gullible and ignorant audience.

Hmmm... I've been thinking about this... and while I agree with you that Beck chose a rather stupid set of examples and a very bad example of a time period, I do believe that cultures have golden ages. Nations do rise and fall, and cultures wax and wane. Examples are better in the arts I believe than in politics.

I

was born in 1949. I remember the "good old days." When young loafers were carted away by the draft, drunks could come home and beat their wives with impunity, rapists got off because "she asked for it," women in the workplace could either put out or quit when the fat-ass boss leaned on them...

All of that is true and good riddance. But might we also remember that it was also a time of family farms before the advent of Big Ag and hormone/poison laden food, kids playing outside, "be home by dinner", without the overwhelming every-minute-supervised paranoia. When there was an actual family dinner that didn't involve fast food, when there was a single TV in the home that everyone watched together with programs shared and talked about rather than everyone to a different computer/TV for whatever...

Just sayin'... there is good and bad in every age. How about we learn from it all, take the best of every age and apply it to make now better than yesterday to be better than today.

And Beck's a few decades too young to pull off the "the good old days" routine. The 60s and 70s were not a simpler, more innocent era. It's no use trying to build a better yesterday.

Let me clarify. The reporter on KOA, who so happened to know this family from some other media events that they have appeared at, hinted that there was the possibility that there was more to the story and that in the past, he knew this family to be a bit of publicity hounds.

Nothing yet, as far as I have heard, has proven that this was totally a set up. What was being hinted at is the family was using, or were capable of using the incident to their advantage.

The family are UFO buffs, homegrown weather chasers and "scientist."

Pregnant teenagers forced to give up their children in closed adoptions they had no voice in.

We cool? Mine was a Cheryl M.

Of course. I knew a Marian too. She was responsible for an affinity to redheads that I retain to this day.

One aspect of the modern world that I like is in fact the eclectism and diversity of the styles and other choices people can make. We can keep what we want of the past and discard the things that need to be discarded.

I love old stuff. I have a restored 1953 Chevy pickup that I get out and drive once in a while, and a 1939 Hallicrafter console radio that works perfectly.
I am a geologist by profession. I am also a vintage sci-fi addict (and a retro writer of that genre). I like to affect the look I associated with field scientists when I first became aware of them in 50s monster movies; battered fedora, khaki shirt and trousers, old military belt and surplus boots.
At the same time, I can come back to my computer and communicate with real people all over the world, even helping spread the appreciation of my interests in ways that were unthinkable just a few years ago. I've survived some health problems that would have killed me stone dead when I was a young man.

Bravo! Once minor correction: 80's music as a whole suuucked. There are a few exceptions like Talking Heads, maybe a few Devo songs but new wave was garbage.

Au contraire. If it was concept albums one wanted, that era was well & truly past. But it was a great decade for light, throwaway singles. Who really needs to sit through a bunch of cerebral REM albums, when you can dig into a nice chocolatey box of these?:

re: #388 The Sanity Inspector

And Beck's a few decades too young to pull off the "the good old days" routine. The 60s and 70s were not a simpler, more innocent era. It's no use trying to build a better yesterday.

I'd like to pop that balloon. When people start waxing about "simpler times" and the "good old days", they are always talking about their childhood.

When you are a child, times ARE simpler, for you. Life is orderly and you are protected. But then you grow up and become more aware of the problems in the world. The world hasn't gotten worse, you've just GROWN UP.

Rape, incest, murder, adultery, torture, war, addiction, prostitution, child abuse, etc, etc. These are not new things introduced in the 60s.

My thoughts on that man are mostly visceral, not rational. I'll try to develop a good explanation for my opinion, but doing so is quite difficult for me. George W. is not stupid. Sometimes he has been wrong, but his understanding of the world is far better than that of BHO.

Sure, that explains why President Bush's administration was classifying thousands of satellite photographs from NASA and the military solely on the basis that these photographs documented an increase in arctic sea-ice loss, because GWB understands the world better than BHO.

It also explains why the USA has now been returned to our rightful position as the most admired nation on the whole damned planet, because George may very well have understood the world the best, but he treated it at times with almost open contempt.

The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack broke sales records for a reason. I think there was a reflexive rejection to disco in the 80s and people forgot how good some of those songs really were.

Disco totally sucked - even for those of us there - but there were gems among the detritus and the Bee Gees were at the top.

509 rurality  Thu, Oct 15, 2009 7:39:06pm

I think this yearning for the 'real America' or the 1950s is a reflection of two things or combo of both. 50's America was basically pre-drugs, aside from a little reefer madness here and there. Influx of drugs really hit my small town America hard and seemingly out of left field. Jr. was helping with the harvest one weekend and strung out on heroin the next or Jr. went off to Viet Nam and came back with a monkey, etc. Drugs were associated with Dems. and cities/colleges, so lots of once democratic rural areas went R. Perhaps the anti-intellectual hostility was fed by this too and what I think is the second reason for the yearning, insecurity. Nutters want to go back to a time when being white was kinda like having an Am Ex gold card--instant entre. You could be a lazy, dumbass, but hey, you were white so you were already way ahead of the game--or at least way ahead of those people. It's easier to rail against 'elites' or the Ivy educated, to somehow paint intellectual achievement as suspect than to read a book, put down the remote, try to broaden horizons so that you understand other people, places and how they effect issues. And the nutters gift themselves and their lazy, fearfulness with righteousness by cherry picking stuff out of the Bible or parroting stuff they hear from the Bible. If that is your text, yeah, maybe you can time travel and go back to this 'real' America. This sort of thinking or non-thinking is why Fox is so dangerous. It reinforces a narrowness of thought and experience and gives it legitimacy by being on TV (the true God of the lazy) and if Fox is the only source of info aside from Rush and the Bible--I mean, that's a trifecta of misinformation. And this sort of group think, circle jerk, works really well, gives the social and intellectually insecure people tons of confidence---as long as the bubble isnt penetrated. That's why Charles is getting so much heat. This is also why I will never listen to or respect those that know better and pander to this fearful, hateful, laziness.

It also explains why the USA has now been returned to our rightful position as the most admired nation on the whole damned planet, because George may very well have understood the world the best, but he treated it at times with almost open contempt.

re: #490 PT Barnum

My tastes are pretty eclectic, so there is a fair amount of metal I listen to, but as I don't watch videos, I get more of my sense of whether a band is any good from just listening.

I think mine are, as well. I don't categorically reject music because of it's genre or era, but of course there are things I don't prefer. But in the 80s, I was as big of a metalhead as most people. I might still have a drumstick lying around that I caught at an Armored Saint halloween concert.

So much of it is subjective. For example, I absolutely cannot stand Pink Floyd even though they are generally listed as among the greatest rock bands of all time. I don't get what people like about them.

So when people despise some band that I think is great, I understand and shrug it off as personal taste.

Well, that's my point. I hear this talking point a LOT, and I really haven't seen anything he's said that actually backs it up. In fact, when I read his speeches, I see a lot of strong defenses of American values. I do NOT see him "blaming America first" for anything.

Way too many people are reacting emotionally instead of paying attention to reality.

I so agree. Someone earlier noted the emotional reactions to "he's leading us down the path of...blah blah blah" pre-emptive fear mongering.

On the other hand, as a new member, I'm having a heck of a time keeping up to these fast paced comments. It's like working out or something.

Love the 80's music.

Beck's nostalgia: notice how everything being sold is mid-century modern? It's because we all love the things of our childhood.

Then, blowhards like him would have to get real jobs like the rest of us. I only know about the existence of him through this blog and some articles at TNR.

I do realize that lots of Republicans seem to think highly of him, which is ridiculous, but very unsurprising.

That being said, Beck or no, Limbaugh or no, I do think it's weird for anyone to say that Mao is a "favorite philosopher". It's kind of like saying Stalin is a "favorite philosopher".

And while I think Dunn is right to call Fox on their B.S., she's leaving an opening when she says, "Fox is just a mouthpiece of the G.O.P." (which it is) Simply because, that's an attack that a republican will come back and say, "Well, the NYTimes is a mouthpiece of the DNC". (which it is).

"Operation: Mindcrime" by Queensryche is probably one of my favorite, if not my favorite, album of all time. Everything else they did was average, at best, but Mindcrime was orders of magnitude above anything else in that era.

And with white supremacists resurgent, it seems relevant again.

Music is very subjective ... I love Pink Floyd. But tastes change. When Elton John was in his heyday, I was not a big fan. But 20 years later, I thought he was great. back in the 70's, I was totally into ELP and Yes, but now I never listen to them at all. Right now, I think Coldplay is a great contemporary band. I have all their albums and there is not a bad one in the bunch IMHO.

I'm right there with ya.

I hated disco in the 70's and 80's.

Too bad - I missed out on some good stuff.

heavy metal is a marginal offshoot of rock and roll...wow...nobody will even remember Metalica 25 yrs from now...their contribution to the greater picture is little...unless our children are as braindead as their parents who dig that crap

That's what my grandfather was undoubtedly telling my father about the Beatles. "Rock and roll is a fad!"

I don't think Metallica is timeless by any means, but they were not some idiotic drooling teenage band. They wrote a lot of anti-war songs, like "Blackened", "For Whom the Bell Tools", "Fight fire with Fire" and "One".

How can anyone listen to "One" and think Metallica was a crappy band? It boggles the mind.

I'm sorry, but I don't buy this. So what if the "National Brand Index" (whatever that is) says we're number one. Is being most popular really that important? Frankly I would be willing to bet most rational people would rather be best than most popular. With the exception of a few high school kids of course...

Why can't we be both? Why can't we be the most popular precisely because we ARE the best?

When most people leave high school they realize that the real world bears little resemblance. In politics and diplomacy popularity matters, and perception is reality.

There was so much good music in the 80s and all so different. I forgot about disco and went to Dire Straits, Rush, Moody Blues. There was an oldies revival, prompting me to raid my parents' collection (still have a Kingsmen Live and a Booker T and the MGs). Dire Straits and CCR begat an interest in the Blues, and then someone played Led Zeppelin for me. Got into Alternative music in college.

A much higher-pitched second vocal track is sung by guest vocalist Merry Clayton. Of her inclusion, Jagger said in the 2003 book According to... The Rolling Stones: "The use of the female voice was the producer's idea. It would be one of those moments along the lines of 'I hear a girl on this track - get one on the phone.' " Clayton gives her solo performance, and one of the song's most famous pieces, after a solo performed by Richards, repeatedly singing "Rape, murder; It's just a shot away, It's just a shot away," and finally screaming the final stanza. She and Jagger finish the song with the line, "Love, sister, it's just a kiss away." To date it remains one of the most prominent contributions to a Rolling Stones track by a female vocalist.[2]

OK, you are right there earthworm. Let me tell you the secret truth and come clean... this is an orthodox Leninist movement. In April of 2005, the great leader Lenin's brain was surgically implanted into the body of Barak Obama.

This was done using technology developed from captured saucers at MIT. The scientists of the world have finally decided to take America from you.
They are tired of people who can't do algebra voting and messing up the world as they see it.

So, they are making a communist utopia fueled by AGW legislation and health care reform in order to remake the world in a smarter vision.

Now you are correct. In normal circumstances, communism doesn't work. It only works when smart people who aren't driven by greed have work done by robotic labor. But where does that leave you... Well that is why the government is fluoridating the water and making chem trails. The combination of that, and secret messages in television programming, will cause people like you to become sterile, smoke more and die early.

It is eugenics admittedly.

But the world really will be better off without stupid, angry, crazed types.

Van Jones: Valid point, but he has been let go.

I would even challenge him there. From the speeches Van Jones has given he was pretty clear that he became disillusioned with marxism.

Furthermore it appears he has charted a new path that is a mix of religion-light (sort of a new-age eschatology) and Jungian psychology. In other words, he believes he can help mankind reach a new order of society through self awareness (in this particular case, ecological self awareness.) Now, that may be strange in itself but it is hardly a reason to run someone out of their government job.

"You smell like pot, your friends spilled beer all over you ..."

Yeah, so? Isn't this Thursday?

How else are you supposed to recognize a fellow traveller? Better than a secret handshake.

Sorry, I don't buy it. Care to enlighten the rest of us?

Perhaps I put too much stock into being able to speak the English Language, but George never struck me as being that much of a rocket scientist.

If I could upding you, I would.

When I was in college I used to watch Glenn Beck on Headline News from time to time and he seemed a little out there, but tolerable...is it just me or has he gone way off the rails since joining Fox? That is, is he hamming it up for the Fox News audience or did he just straight up lose his mind somewhere in between?

Glen Beck is equivalent to Jon Stewart?

That's, uh,..., wow. Just wow. And some say the right-wing lacks a sense of humor.

re: #682 nccanuck

He might be a showman, but he's not funny (intentionally at least).

The 70s also produced this:

Watch at your peril.
