I can listen to Satriani all day long. Heck, I seem to be one of the three people who like him matched up with the rest of Chickenfoot. Sammy’s voice just works with Joe really well, IMO. Heh, last time I asked if anyone besides me liked them I got a resounding no.

I hated mowing when I was a kid because my parents had a huge fucking lawn (about 2-3 hours of mowing)…now it’s MY lawn. It only takes about fifteen or twenty minutes total. But it’s mine.

I actually like mowing my 1/4 acre lawn. I do different patterns every time, like going in a circle around a tree and spiraling out from there, or - if I’m really ambitious - mowing in one direction and then mowing in the right angled direction. After about 10 years, I’ve got several of my neighbors doing the same. It is actually supposed to be good for the lawn, too!

His arrest comes in the wake of the statement issued by the association earlier this week in support of the February 14 marches. The website Vaares, which is close to Sayyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson
of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and a strong critic of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been blocked.Several university student activists in Quchan in northeast Iran have been arrested.
The Association of Teachers and Scholars of Qom, a leftist clerical group, has issued a statement in support of the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. It described them as revolts against dictatorship and warned that their repercussions will reach all of the Islamic world.
A large number of Green Movement activists and reformists have called on people to go to the roof of their homes Saturday and Sunday night and shout Allah-o Akbar (God is great) in support of the Monday marches.
As of late Friday, the number of people who have enrolled with the Facebook page for the Monday marches has reached 36,000.
In a moving letter to Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi, Narges Mohammadi, wife of Taghi Rahmani, the nationalist-religious figure who was arrested on Thursday, described how the security forces broke down both the front door of their apartment building and the door of their home within. Damn, that’s a smokin’ story.
When Anthony Bourdain (supposedly a former coke user) went down to Panama to film an episode of No Reservations for the Travel Channel, he helped the cops to set fire to a very large cache of seized cocaine (we’re talking tons and tons here). In his usual smartass style, he said (and I’m paraphrasing). “Around the world, supermodels are weeping.”

First time I saw Satriani was on the first G3 tour (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson, with Adrian Legg opening) in 1996. It was at the Austin Music Hall. Great show, but I think it was probably the hottest indoor temperature I’ve ever experienced, and standing immobile for ~3.5 hours wasn’t much fun, either.

Reviewing the follow-ups to the story between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, it looks like the current government has acted like a colossal tool. When they did their incursion, they clear cut a large area of the place in dispute. Also, it seems that Mr. Ortega has been using this as some sort re-election tool.

New CPAC Head Distances Group from GOProud
The new chair of the American Conservative Union, Al Cardenas, today distanced his organization from GOProud, telling FrumForum in an exclusive interview that “it’s going to be difficult to continue the relationship” with the gay conservative organization.
“I have been disappointed with their website and their quotes in the media, taunting organizations that are respected in our movement and part of our movement, and that’s not acceptable. And that puts them in a difficult light in terms of how I view things,” said Cardenas.

I don’t understand GOProud either. It seems to me in many places in order to make your bones as a Republican,if you’ve at anytime expressed support for pro gay rights legislation, you have to backtrack on it. Someone here posted an article about how in 1993 when he was I assume a legislator in Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty supported a bill banning discrimination based on sexuality. When he first ran for governor, he was accused of being “too soft on gay rights” (gee does that remind you of the story of George Wallace in Alabama being accused of being too moderate on civil rights any?) and Pawlenty has gradually grown more and more anti gay politically over the years.

I think their general approach is far more likely to follow in the footsteps of Cid Highwind “Sit your ass down in that chair and drink your goddamn TEA!”

At the rate the GOP is going, they’re going to get curbstomped in 2012. If they manage to shut down the government, even more so.
212 | HappyWarrior Fri, Feb 11, 2011 7:07:14pm |
I think that their success in the 2010 election has made the TPers.think that they can do this long-term. They forget of course that anger at Obama and Democrats won’t last forever and being elected on anger is not sound strategy at all. And it’s going to be very hard to play that outsider image when the Republicans have the majority in the House.

Also, they’re aware that a true believer may not actually play well with the voters.

John McCain doesn’t have to be strong on economics himself but his advisers should be able to get him to produce reasonable sound bytes at the very least.

Algeria has had a brutal history in recently. They fought a massive war of independence against France, which resulted in the death of 1 million people. After that, the nation was ruled by various General with one coup after another, until 1991 when election were held, which were won by the Islamic Action Front. As a result, the president suspended parliament and made Islamist parties illegal. This caused a Civil War which resulted in the deaths of somewhere between 150k-200k. Since then, terrorism has been somewhat frequent in the country.
Yet, it is still more developed that Morocco. I’m guessing the reason for this is the previous King, Hassan II, being overly power hungry. But they are beginning to make reasonably large gains now, though they still lag behind. (Development judged from HDI)

I really need to pay more attention when I type.

Ok, thanks. Wasn’t familiar with the political situation there. Knew about the history involving the French since one of my favorite movies (Day of the Jackal) involves a bunch of French army extremists who try to assassinate De Gaulle over giving the Algerians their independence and as I recall, Camus’ The Stranger was there too. HAted that book in high school heh.

Some of our army elements used “The Battle of Algiers” as a familiarization tool during the run-up to Iraq. The novels of Jean Lartiguy also sold briskly.
An interesting question of history is what would have happen had General Challe been allowed to go ahead with Operation Trident. He might have been able to wreck the insurgents badly enough to end them as a mid-term threat.

So, we’re less than 4 weeks away from the GOP House essentially closing down the government (because of no authorization to spend/borrow.)
Yes, I expect the Senate to balk at whatever bill the GOP House does eventually pass, if it even passes one.
Hopefully any retirees out there have made alternative plans, if they live check-to-check, etc.
I seem to remember the last time this stunt was pulled that the Fed told the banks to accept the automatic payments from the Treasury anyway (and the Fed would make it work.) But my memory could be wrong here.
Anyway, the days are counting down.

Here’s a good Slate article on the film, and our lessons to be learned, in relation to whole picture. In the end, De Gaulle had more to fear from the paras than the Algerians.

Actually, I think they’ll find something that prevents that outcome. At the 8th and last, I think Boener would pass a CR with Democratic votes and accept the internal rebellion rather than have the blame for a shutdown. He has not forgotten 1994, even if the Tea Party has.

Update from CNN:
House Republicans unveil dramatic spending cuts
By: CNN’s Dana Bash and Deirdre Walsh
Washington (CNN) – House Republicans unveiled a sweeping spending bill Friday evening that slashes hundreds of programs and agencies across the government – from education, to the environment to cops on the beat – setting up a showdown with Senate Democrats.
“The legislation includes the largest reduction in discretionary spending in the history of our nation – over five times larger than any other discretionary cut package ever considered by the House,” said House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers, R-KY, in a statement.
Facing rebellion from conservatives – especially newly elected freshmen – House GOP leaders added $26 billion spending cuts from their planned proposal in order to fulfill a campaign promise to cut $100 billion in spending this year
The total spending cuts add up to $60 billion when compared to spending levels now funding the government. But it meets the GOP pledge to cut $100 billion in federal spending compared to what President Obama proposed for government programs for this fiscal year, which was never enacted.
Based on the President’s budget for this year, $81 billion would be cut from non-security programs, and $19 billion from security related programs, all compared with the president’s budget proposal for 2011.
“These cuts go far and wide, and will affect every community in the nation. These were hard decisions, and I know many people will not be happy with everything we’ve proposed in this package. That’s understandable and not unexpected, but I believe these reductions are necessary to show that we are serious about returning our nation to a sustainable financial path,” said Rogers.
The Republican legislation calls for over 100 federal programs to be outright eliminated, including scholarships, family planning, school counseling, Teach for America, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, AmeriCorps, and the COPS hiring program.

Agreed. They’re saying to the rebels “This is what your cuts look like. This is how they’ll hurt your reelection chances. Still want ‘em?” The bet is that most of the Tea Party aligned congresspeople will then fall into line. Those that won’t will be of two groups:
1. Those who don’t really want to understand the situation, but just want to get their spending cuts. Those are simply delusional, and there’s not much you can do when someone is simply indifferent to reality.
2. Those who see the pain and damage to their reelection the cuts will bring, but still think they are needed. It’s necessary to give some honor to this second group: They may be wrong, but at least they have honest convictions the courage of them. That’s worth something and some of them may be brought around in time.
