My thought too. At some point in the last week, it seems NATO found out that troops there weren't Libyans.
BTW, 66% of Swedes were for aggressive response by their government against Qaddafi. The politics there are very receptive: 7 out of 8 parties combined to pass the measure for more fighters, and most importantly, bombs.
This indicates to me that Sweden has broken a 197 year long period of no aggressive military action. This is their first since the War of the Sixth Coalition, which ended in 1814.

I wanna say that I have no idea whether the maid was lying or not (the fact that she might be shady does not by itself invalidate her claim), but the whole debacle does tremendous damage to the next woman who actually is assaulted (particularly if it's by a high-profile person) and tries to report it. There'll be just that much more assumption that she's making it up for whatever nefarious purpose.
When I was a wee lad I was bullied, rather severely, for years. The perps were usually football jocks - darlings of the socially retarded small-town Texas culture in which I lived. More than once I was told that I was either lying, or did something to deserve it (i.e., angered the gods). What I experienced is light-years away from rape, but the worst part of it was not being taken seriously by the authority figures I thought were supposed to protect me, and even having the whole thing turned back around on me as if it were my fault in the first place. So to me, to scrutinize the [alleged] victim for reasons to avoid examining the case on its merits is morally inexcusable.
Ultimately, it signals to predators that they should focus on prey with less-than-spotless backgrounds, and it signals to women that seeking help from the authorities is going to result in your every bad decision paraded about in public.

I haven't the foggiest what a "Breck Boy" is, but I gather the reference is intended to be derogatory. The "uniform thing" is a drum major's uniform, the connotations of which should be obvious, but apparently are not. It is evocative of Texas' near-religious reverence for high school and college football, and the attendant second-class citizenship apportioned to the members of the marching band. It's a Texas thang baby... you wouldn't understand.
Blah blah blah. Anyway, accusing Eric Johnson of lacking soulfulness is evidence of not having actually listened to any of his music.

I own that album... the intro is worth the price of admission.
I grew up with Dick Wagner...an original shredder, that guy could dazzle a blind man...so many clones and copies, but that guy was the real deal back then...he and Hunter in that Sweet Jane intro is a masterpiece, a no shit treasure

How many generations back do you have to go in your family to get back to that time, exactly?
Um, grandparents. Both my father's parents were born in the 19th century (1885 and 1895 IIRC), and my mother's father was older by several years than her mother who was born in 1901.
Yes, both sets of my grandparents farmed with horses in their early years.
Those were, according to the Indian newspaper, "ancient" times.
I suppose there are plenty of kids around today who would agree.

Tens of thousands protest in Syria
Syrian forces killed 24 civilians on Friday, a prominent rights lawyer said, as tens of thousands of people called on President Bashar al-Assad to step down in some of the biggest demonstrations since a three month uprising.
Defying Assad's military crackdown, demonstrators took to the streets again after Friday prayers across the country, from towns near the western Lebanese border to the desert regions near Iraq in the east.
"Bashar get out of our lives," read placards carried by thousands of Kurds who marched in the northeastern city of Amouda, according to a YouTube video taken by resident.

He can read and write to about the same level.
So there's a lot of asking for things he wants (pop, yes!) and answering basic questions... and gibberish.
Occasionally he'll start going on about something grim he finds hilarious, like the time our dad fell into a patch of nettles, or this incident we think didn't happen where he threw a rock at a fire truck.

He's phsyically fine, and gets a crapton of exercise (walks/runs 6 miles a day soon). A lot of MRDD folks have serious physical problems too, but he seems to have avoided that.
The official diagnosis is "Infantile Autism with Mental Retardation". It would probably be something else now, but hell, it was the late 60s.
Kind of the defining feature of my life is that at some point soon (or hopefully not quite so soon) I'm going to have to throw just about everything aside and go live as his caretaker, etc.

Sorry for the Tull thing, it seriously just has some personal triggers that get me going. I meant no harm :p
Autism is such a wide spectrum, its really hard to define what's going to happen. Your experiences sound a lot like what happened in our family though, my brother bit others a lot when he was little and then eventually changed over to biting himself (although he went through some violent periods as well). He never went to music (although some of the residents at my work who were Autistic definitely did, and in a big way), locking onto visual arts stuff at a very young age.
I would seriously encourage you to email the contact there or even call (altho I can see that being more than a little bit awkward). My mother is where those emails should redirect to (if it works) and she's the one who can give you the best overall story of how things developed over time (with the caveat that again, it was the 70s-80s so some things were done substantially different).
I can regale you with stories all night about growing up around him (some of them kind of scary with hindsight), and both the joys and challenges going along with it. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! :p

Its actually amazing what you put up with when you're a little kid, just because you don't know any different.

That being said, I'm so glad my parents kept my brother. It really did a lot for my life in any number of ways.
Each person is different, and especially each disability is different, but as your grandson develops more and learns, more personality and more forms of interaction will develop. And then its wonderful.
It's so great that your son is sticking it out, its so much better for the child... and its admirable as well, like you said it's no picnic. My brother used to wait for me to get home from school so he could attack me. My mom would actually leave a baseball bat out on the front porch as a warning.
... not that that was the actual solution of course :p In our case, it meant that I went next door to where my grandparents lived and didn't come home at all until he calmed down :D
As a positive, it really brought my sister and I together in some really amazing ways. When you have to defend each other from attack, you don't really have time for the usual sibling squabbling ><

The Good Ship Lollypop has been stopped on the way to Gaza...
Gaza-bound activist flotilla stopped in Greece
An activists' flotilla, including a Canadian vessel, that is trying to breach the Israeli sea blockade of Gaza Strip has been stopped in Greece.
Coast guard officials in the country intercepted one of the flotilla's vessels Friday after it tried to defy a Greek ban on boats sailing to Gaza.
The Audacity of Hope, a U.S. vessel, sailed without warning, leaving behind nine other boats that were supposed to be taking part in the protest.
It was quickly intercepted by a coast guard boat with six masked, armed men on board.
Jimmy Carter's friends are not amused...
Hamas slams Greece for blocking departure of Gaza-bound flotilla
Hamas criticized Greece on Friday for blocking the departure of the flotilla set to sail to Gaza, accusing Greece of playing into Israel’s hands, AFP reported.
AFP quotes Hamas as saying Greece’s action is “inhumane” and “contrary to international regulations and norms.”
"Barring this aid from reaching the Gaza Strip is done as a result of pressure imposed by the Zionist occupiers," the statement also said.
Aid? What aid?
...in an article earlier this week in the Huffington Post, one of the boat’s organizers freely admits that her goal is not to deliver goods or materials into the Gaza Strip. It is clear that the goal of the flotilla organizers is provocation: to challenge Israel’s right of self-defense against a terrorist group that has caused close to a million Israeli civilians to live under the constant threat of attack for the better part of a decade.

My eye spies Ice: Long running story comes to a happy ending:
Cory Maye To Be Released From Prison
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]
MONTICELLO, Miss. -- After 10 years of incarceration, and seven years after a jury sentenced him to die, 30-year-old Cory Maye will soon be going home. Mississippi Circuit Court Judge Prentiss Harrell signed a plea agreement Friday morning in which Maye pled guilty to manslaughter for the 2001 death of Prentiss, Mississippi, police officer Ron Jones, Jr.
....
Maye's story, a haunting tale about race, the rural south, the excesses of the drug war, the inequities of the criminal justice system and a father's instincts to protect his daughter, caught fire across the Internet and the then-emerging blogging world when I first posted the details on my own blog in late 2005.Shortly after midnight on December 26, 2001, Maye, then 21, was drifting off to sleep in his Prentiss duplex as the television blared in the background. Hours earlier, he had put his 18-month-old-daughter to sleep. He was soon awoken by the sounds of armed men attempting to break into his home. In the confusion, he fired three bullets from the handgun he kept in his nightstand.
As he'd later testify in court, Maye realized within seconds that he'd just shot a cop. A team of police officers from the area had received a tip from an informant -- later revealed to be a racist drug addict -- that there was a drug dealer living in the small yellow duplex on Mary Street. It now seems clear that the police were after Jamie Smith, who lived on the other side of the duplex, not Maye or his live-in girlfriend Chenteal Longino. Neither Maye nor Longino had a criminal record. Their names weren't on the search warrants.
For those not up to speed on all the crappy details here they are:

More on the Cory Maye story from an interview yesterday:
I asked him what he [cory maye] was thinking. He started to answer, but couldn’t. So, Evans, Maye, attorney Ben Vernia and I sat for a few moments in silence. Evans then asked, “You’re thinking about Ron, aren’t you? About the Jones family?”
Maye nodded, and dropped his head into his hand.
“I can’t tell you how many times that happens,” Evans told me later. “He grieves for them.”
Until that moment, it’s an aspect of this story I don’t think I had really considered. It must be an incredible burden to know you’ve taken another man’s life, that you’ve caused a pain and sense of loss for all the people who knew and loved that person, and that for them, that pain and loss are permanent.
I’ve noted more than a few times here that Officer Ron Jones, Jr., was well-liked in this community, even among blacks, which is something that can’t be said of many white police officers in the area. Independent of how convinced Cory Maye, his family, his attorneys, or anyone else may be of his legal or moral innocence, independent of the fact that he was put in an awful predicament set in place by bad policies and bad judgment, independent of all of that, he will still always know that he killed a man, a man he respected, a man he now knows meant him no real harm the night all this happened. That’s a hell of a thing to carry around. And it isn’t something he’ll leave behind with his orange jumpsuit.
I'm surprised there aren't more dead cops and civilians. The tactic of immediately escalating a situation by kicking in peoples doors at night is an obvious recipe for disaster. Rather than learning from their mistakes they take the dead bodies as evidence for an even more aggressive response.

NORTH KOREA: Learning stops as students must work
[Link: www.universityworldnews.com...]
Close watchers of North Korean affairs were caught on the hop this week by reports that universities in the hermit kingdom would be closed from 27 June for up to 10 months while students are sent to work on farms, in factories and in construction.Diplomats in Pyongyang confirmed that students were being drafted into manual labour on the outskirts of the city until April next year to prepare for major celebrations to commemorate the centenary of the late leader Kim Il Sung's birthday. But they said this did not mean the closure of universities.
Reports originating in South Korea and Japan suggested that the Pyongyang government had ordered universities to cancel classes until April next year, exempting only students graduating in the next few months and foreign students.

Odd about Seneca. There was a small herd loose at Chemical Systems Laboratories at Edgewood. We always hoped it was natural.
I think the Senaca herd formed up partially due to the fact that there is no hunting around there. A white deer in other places stands out pretty clearly (except in arctic conditions) whereas normal deer coloring is pretty effective camoflauge. If you web search a bit you'll see pictures of white deer from all over put up by people.
My joke to my hunting friends in PA is that the hunter pressure is pushing the deer to evolve with just a single spike antler* and be "hunter orange" in color.
* - PA regulations have a antler size/shape requirement for shooting bucks. A deer with just a single spike antler on each side is not eligible to be shot.

Trooper accused of false arrest
[Link: www.newsobserver.com...]
RALEIGH -- The state Highway Patrol is investigating the actions of a trooper accused of falsely arresting a Raleigh mother in Wilmington, mistreating her and then orchestrating an unjustified traffic stop of her husband. The internal affairs probe was triggered after Raleigh attorney Hoyt Tessener sent an eight-page letter on Friday to Gov. Bev Perdue and other officials detailing the experience of his wife, Gina, earlier this month with Senior Trooper Edward S. Wyrick.
...
Gina Tessener, 51, said Wednesday she is going public with her experience in the hope she can prevent Wyrick from behaving similarly with other women."I want him off the road," she said. "I don't want him to have this authority over anyone. I don't trust his judgment. This conduct should not be condoned"
The Tesseners traveled to the coast earlier this month for a weeklong conference of the N.C. Advocates for Justice, a trial lawyers group. On the night of June 21, Tessener was driving her 2007 Lexus from a formal dinner ending the conference in Wilmington to a friend's house in Wrightsville Beach, where the couple was staying. Her husband was attending to other business, and she was in the car alone.

Theories:
1) The pass was slightly damaged enough that it wasn't machine readable.2) He flew at a busy time and screening was lax
3) The passes don't have expiration dates. Or the machines don't check them.
1) If the pass was that "damaged" it would have burped out of the machine each time (luggage check in,, security,, gate) causing closer physical inspection
2) again, he'd have to gone to at least two out of the three check points and I find the gate people are usually more thorough than the security is (in terms of checking the actual pass,, they run it through the scanner AND look it over
3) they do

The gold standard has a certain appeal to Michelle: she can understand it. Gold is gold, it has an inherent value.
Just like creationism is easy to undersand: God made the creatures on the earth, in the sea and in the air and then created mankind in his own image.

In iowa. It sort of makes sense. She's probably going to beat him there with very little effort. Skip the loss, diminish the victory, and focus on a race where he can beat her.
I don't recall this happening in previous primaries. The are occasional shakeups in staff but Cain and Newt can't get anybody to work for them. Strange.

So I go see my doctor three weeks ago (very fit guy,, swims, tennis, eats right, early 40's), .
I have a pinched nerve in my upper back/ shoulder blade area
He writes out some scrips and tells me to check back in three weeks.
I call Wednesday and talk to him, saying I'm all out of the meds and i'm about 75-80% better
He calls in a re-fill of one of the meds
I go Thursday after work to pick it up. Pharmacist looks at me and says "Did you hear about Dr. Ito" I said "no, but I just spoke with him yesterday"
She said "He died ,,, just keeled over and died!"
Schnikies!

True. But it seems that the last few cycles the Iowa caucus seems to be losing its status and she has a pretty big advantage there. Iowa loves its hometown john waynes.//

You could be right. I don't think her winning Iowa will give her that much momentum. It's almost a hometown win. I don't think Romney is going to get much credit for winning Massachusetts. MN could be fun to watch with Pawlenty and Bachmann, if they're both still in the race.

I would like to think that too, but imagine, for example, if Sarah Palin throws her support behind Michelle, or if enough people see her as the anti-Obama (those who already see Obama as the anti-Christ) and she will find herself in the position of "front runner" and be that much harder to beat.

Timothy Egan has a good piece slamming Bachman in the NYTimes:
The media jackals have been all over Representative Michele Bachmann for misstatements, zany ideas and alterations to history as she kicked off her presidential run in Waterloo, Iowa, home to serial killer John Wayne Gacy — not the actor John Wayne, as she said in her evocation of dreamy small-town life.
From her contention that eliminating the minimum wage would mean full employment to her assertion that “almost all” people in the “gay lifestyle” have been abused, these things can be explained. Bachmann has a worldview that requires constant reshaping in the face of real life. However, if God is writing the script for her campaign, as she says, He needs a fact-checker.
I think it's going to be real hard for her to gain any traction on the intellectual right.

I think it's always a terrible mistake to underestimate your opponents here. While I agree that the GOP voters who matter are all of the above, the GOP donor network isn't. There are plenty of pro-intellectual, pro-education and even pro-science fund raisers within the GOP. These poeple matter. Look at what happened in New York. Coumo got the top GOP fundraisers to back gay marriage, and it shifted enough politicians to get it done.

So. Anyone care to comment on the "great" left wing intellectual Noam Chomsky? I mean. Do you find him to be intellectually honest for example?
I think about Noam Chomsky as little as possible, to be honest. Intellectuals tend to bore me. I'm sure what they're doing is important...I just don't want to hear about it.

Daniel Dennett, to the extent that he is a massive secularist, is on the 'left' in politics. His book, Darwin's Dangerous Idea, is the most exciting thing I've ever read in my life. It's goddamn brilliant.
Likewise, a lot of Orwell's essays I find electrifying.
Sapolsky's books on his research and its application to human behavior are amazingly fascinating and endlessly applicable, given that they're about, you know, human behavior.
I think there's a distinct different between pundits who cast themselves as intellectuals, and actual intellectuals who happen to have an interest in some aspect of politics.

close enough
Er, no. Not at all. He's a philosopher. That's about as far from being a physical scientist as you can get. He is a philosopher who's interested in the philosophy of science and engineering, but also in purely abstract concepts like free will.
I also think the word 'partisan', when applied to scientists or intellectuals in their field, is an entirely different thing than when applied to pundits.
Dennett is a 'partisan' of the Dawkins selfish gene theory, where the gene is the unit of replication rather than the organism. That means, however, that he believes that scientific theory holds the most weight.
A partisan of the concept of free markets doesn't necessarily hold that view because of actual analysis, but often because of philosophical bent; because they believe free markets to be somehow morally superior. Dennett doesn't care about the moral quantity of the scientific theories he is partisan for.

Greece's coast guard said Saturday the captain of the "Audacity of Hope" faces charges of trying to leave port without permission and of endangering the lives of the boat's passengers. The latter charge is a felony.
The "Audacity of Hope" was due to carry 36 passengers, four crew and about 10 members of the media.
Its attempt to sail Friday night from the port of Perama, near Athens, was thwarted by coast guard speedboats.

Iran: Supreme Court upholds death sentence for Christian priest
Iran's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence handed to a Chiristan priest convicted of apostasy, Iranian website Peykeiran reports.
A lower Iranian court sentenced the priest, Yousef Nadarkhani, from the city of Rasht on the Black Sea, in December 2010 after finding him guilty of apostasy. He has been held for almost two years in Lakan prison and was arrested in October, 2009 while attempting to register his evangelical church in the city of Rasht.
The young priest was born to a Muslim family but denies he was ever a Muslim.
Under Iran's Sharia law, converting to another religion from Islam is apostasy, a crime punishable by death.
Churches are reported to have come under intense pressure in the last year, with a wave of random arrests and increasingly anti-Christian rhetoric.

There is a "white" gene for coloration in all creatures. WE don't hear much about them because south of the Arctic they the "white" color is basically a target for predators. Unless, of course, you are human.

Hezbollah leader defends Hariri killing suspects
Hezbollah's leader has defended the men indicted in the murder of a former prime minister of Lebanon as "brothers" with an "honorable history."
Sheik Hassan Nasrallah spoke Saturday for the first time since the indictment was announced Thursday. A high-ranking Hezbollah militant and three others were accused in the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri.
The suggestion that the group was involved in the crime threatens to plunge this Arab nation on Israel's northern border into a new and violent crisis. The Shiite militant Hezbollah denies any role in the killing and vows never to turn over any of its members.
The case has further polarized Lebanon's rival factions.
