Here’s CNN contributor and Andrew Breitbart editor Dana Loesch, saying that a mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasound procedure (vis a vis the new legislation in Virginia) is no more intrusive than regular intercourse.

That’s the big thing that progressives are trying to say, that it’s rape and so on and so forth. And in fact, this big battle that I’ve, uh, totally won with Keith Olbermann by the way, like, not only won once but twice and three times… uh, there were individuals saying, [high voice] “Oh what about the Virginia rape? The rapes that, the forced rapes of women who are pregnant?” What!?

Wait a minute, they had no problem having similar to a trans-vaginal procedure when they engaged in the act that resulted in their pregnancy.

And if it wasn't, then presumably it was a choice to spend quality time with someone they love, rather than a procedure performed by a relative stranger using a medical instrument under fluorescent lights on a table. That does not qualify as 'similar'.

This bill would cause a gigantic problem in medical ethics for doctors. Fictionalizing a medical history is dangerous and unethical, but so is doing a procedure that serves no legitimate medical purpose. There'd be no right decision for a doctor to make.

Not all abortions happen in a clinic that's constantly under siege from whackjob protesters. Some of them happen in hospitals too.

Not that many doctors take the Hippocratic Oath anymore, it's a bit out of date. However, the AMA ethics board and a whole host of other professional associations, as well as licensing groups for the state, all have strictures against unnecessary procedures.

And whether or not the woman can actually say to have consented is an open question. It's basically coercion.

All I'm doing is pointing out that using the conscience clause is a bad idea because it validates the idea of a conscience clause, which is exactly what we're trying to fight against.

I think that, sadly, that's a likely outcome. But invoking the conscience clause would be a way to not be arrested, rather than taking the opportunity to fight the law in court based on the unconstitutionality of the law itself.

I've more hope for the personhood law, which as was noted in an earlier thread, will cause all sorts of havoc because there's over 250,000 instances of the word "person" used in Virginia law. Yeah, the fuckheads in Richmond could alter all those laws, but it's going to take one long fucking bill to do so.

To be completionist, there's also a pretty-well-sourced writing of Hippocrates where he counsels a woman to exercise strenuously to induce a miscarriage, so it's unlikely that he would have something against abortion per se. I'd argue that by singling out a particular practice-- as he did with cutting for stone, a fully legitimate medical procedure-- he was simply warning against dangerous procedures. A pessary would be a roundabout way of inducing an abortion, probably doing so by giving some toxic shock. It's possible it'd be a direct application of abortifacient to the cervix but that's pretty damn sophisticated for that time period of medicine.

As to the ultrasound procedure, it's used for other things than pregnancy. Any trouble in the pelvic area, even kidneys, you get a better picture with the transducer.

For what it's worth, I've had the pleasure of the experience. Not to get terribly graphic, but the transducer itself is about the size of speculum, actually a little smaller, but maybe a bit bigger than a tampon. Anyway, speculum doesn't hurt, per se. It's not terribly comfy, but it isn't painful.

I've had a whole bunch of transvaginal ultrasounds. I can't imagine that there would be anything that could go wrong. I don't think it is any more dangerous than an abdominal ultrasound.

Hotmail helped my out a little while ago, when its autoscan caught an infected PDF sent from a game store's email account. I sent the store a message letting them know of the problem.

I've got two layers of download protection with emails. The only virus ever to make it past Hotmail got caught by Norton and auto-deleted before it could perform any action.

A younger Mitt Romney would have totally opposed such a procedure. He may now call himself a "severely conservative" governor, but there wasn't much about his term as Gov that was conservative, severely or otherwise. Now he'll have to support this procedure, at least until the primaries are over.

The notion that Obama has flip flopped like Romney is demonstrably false. There's a huge difference between failing to keep all your campaign promises (see Obama and every president in US history) and doing what Romney's done--change your position in an about face on most of the major social and economic issues of the day.

Abortion. Health care. Gay rights. Immigration. Gun control. Tax cuts. Climate change. Gays in military. Support for the Reagan/Bush legacy. Obama holds essentially the same position on these issues that he did 8 years ago. Mitt, OTOH, holds pretty much the opposite position on each issue. Which is one of the reasons he can't seem to break through with Republicans who call themselves "very conservative" and/or TP members. They recognize that he's packaging himself like New Coke, as if Old Coke never existed.

There is no MBF between Romney and Obama. Nor between Romney and the other GOP candidates who have in their careers been far more consistent, at least in their support of or opposition to the major social/economic issues that shaped the political landscape of our time.

Such a strategy makes it easy to present a straw man argument (i.e. just debunk one group's arguments and imply that it applies to all these groups).

Many advocates of these positions strongly object to being lumped with another group whose particular claims they reject.

Proving the scientific theory of evolution would not disprove design. Any attempt to disprove design is doomed to fail since one's failure to discern design does not mean that it does not exist.

All democracies needs at least two responsible sane parties in order to function effectively. But the GOP seems to fit this description less and less each day.

The most "radical" thing done by the Dems was Obamacare, a watered down version of the health care systems that have existed for decades in nearly the entire Western world (from Canada to Australia to most of Europe and Japan, which has the longest life expectancy in the world and has had universal coverage for 50 years.)

On the other hand, the GOP comes out with one proposal after the next that exist virtually nowhere else in the West, and actually would move us backward to a more primitive time in America. See Sen. Blunt's proposed rule on contraception coverage, which would allow ALL employers to refuse coverage of ANY procedure they found morally objectionable. Talk about getting between you and your Doctor! Then of course there's the subject of this thread, which is a procedure "just like sex" except that there's no physical attraction between two people, no consensuality, no penis involved and is mandated by the state.

I don't see how the GOP plans to appeal to a broad cross section of Americans. Their strength is with religious white married conservatives (still a huge group, though shrinking). They seem to want to alienate everyone else.

Former Houston city councilman and conservative radio talk show host Michael Berry is being accused of crashing his vehicle into another car and leaving the scene outside a Montrose bar last month.

The alleged hit-and-run occurred around 11 p.m. Jan. 31 in the 2400 block of Converse near Hyde Park outside TC's Show Bar, a well-known gay bar that hosts popular drag shows. Tuderia Bennett, a bouncer at TC's, said he was on the front patio that night and saw a black Chevrolet Tahoe traveling south on Converse.

When the Tahoe came to the intersection at Hyde Park, the vehicle suddenly went into reverse, driving backward approximately 70 feet before crashing into Bennett's Volkswagen Passat, which was parallel parked across the street from TC's, according to the crash report.

...

TC's bar manager, Rod Gonzales, said he was with Bennett the second time the driver of the Tahoe circled back around to the scene of the crash. While he didn't see the crash, Gonzales recognized Berry as a customer at the bar that night as well as from others.

The bar's owner, Tim Pugh, said he gave police a copy of the surveillance footage inside TC's that clearly shows Berry inside the establishment.

BTW, the whole "did a literal Adam and Eve exist" question is glowing its embers once again in the religious blogging crowd, these past few weeks.

It's only among a small group, but one that is sort of influential as it includes circles of people which include those who teach in seminaries and bible schools.

The mullahs (e.g. Al Mohler) are horrified at the thought, but there is a neo-evangelical movement to try and syncretize a modern world view of the physical world (that's you, me, the Earth, the universe, etc.) with a traditional Evangelical Christian worldview.

Now, in reality that's already been done a thousand times (e.g., most of the old main-line Christian churches, but apparently they don't count because they are "liberal"), but this new movement is struggling to surface in the good ol' American hyper-religious communities.

Time will tell if it will affect that larger share of American culture (and it is a non-trivial share of American society) that is hyper-religious. I suspect the Mullahs will succeed in isolating such movement and with enough exorcism/annulments get rid of the offenders.

The big elephant in the room about 2004 Ohio remains the maker of the electronic voting machines - the ones with no paper trail? Maryland in 2012 is going to be different. Inherently. And that is where the fun begins :)

I'm leaving it up to her. She's going to stress enough for both of us.

However, I did 'prep' by taking practice tests on an early computer program, and I think it helped me by making the whole format familiar.

The only times in modern history in which civil rights once granted have been rolled backwards is in societies experiencing theocratic revolution, such as the situation women and religious minorities faced in Iran and Afghanistan. While many in the social conservative movement and Republican party are eager to see their version of God's law imposed on America, frankly I don't think they have the guts to really make a play for it.

The only reason we had our son take the test is because he spent the first 9 years of his education in a Montessori school and is NOT USED to tests at all, much less standardized tests.

The GRE is even more over rated than the SAT.

Of course, part of me saying this is that standardized tests are easy for me. Not just a little bit - it's almost like I know what they want to have you answer. When I was in 8th grade we did a special test to norm the results for our statewide 9th grade standardized test. I got a perfect score. The problem is, that's not supposed to happen in their statistical model. They had to throw out the whole test because I didn't fit their expectations.

I did that again in hight school. I hated my junior year chem teacher and got a flat F for the year in the course. The day after our year end final we took a city wide standardized test. I got the highest score in the city :) Tell me that didn't cause a major firestorm at the school board :LOL: Pity that they didn't fire the incompetent SOB teacher I had outright but his days did become numbered after that... ;)

I know I am late to discussion, but only recently got home. I have been in the field of Ob/Gyn for over 25 years now, and I don't think I have ever been so angry about a law before. Will never again vote for a Republican again.

These people are just evil. They haven't got a clue about how common rape or sexual abuse is. For many of these victims, even a pelvic exam(much less a vaginal probe ultrasound) performed by a doctor they trust and feel comfortable with can be traumatic. To force them to undergo an unnessary vaginal probe is criminal, especially during a particularly vulnerable time for them.

Also, as a married woman who has had pelvic exams and the occasional vaginal probe ultrasound myself, I can assure anyone that they are much more intrusive than having sexual intercouse. I have never had a patient tell me they were equivalent either. Hate to think about the quality of Ms. Loesch's sex life if they are the same to her.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about OTHER PEOPLE'S sex life. Why is it anyone's or any entity's business?

The only persons/entity that should (IMHO) have control of sex is THE INDIVIDUAL HAVING OR NOT HAVING IT.

The consequences carry beyond well into control over women's health and medical options that have nothing to do with sex per se but are simply consequences of gender. People should be emphasizing at every opportunity that the Pill is used as a prophylactic for more than just pregnancy, that it helps prevent ovarian cysts in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, that it helps prevent endometriosis, related tumors and endometrial cancer.

If she'd been on it the Pill probably would have saved my Mom from having to have a radical hysterectomy with removal of both ovaries in her mid forties. Instead by the time her endometriosis was diagnosed she had a benign tumor the size of a regulation softball sitting in her abdomen.

It doesn't take much for men to be aware of and understand these kinds of things. It's pretty fucking basic really. Just open up your eyes and pay an ounce of attention to the women in your lives, your friends, wives, your mothers and sisters, then extrapolate from there and think about the logical consequences of what the Republicans are attempting to do.

I find it hard to believe it was the teacher's fault you got the F. When I was in high school I tanked junior English for what I thought was the same reason. Perhaps I was a little immature, because I was the only one who didn't like him. You obviously learned something in that class, so the teacher couldn't have been all bad.

Oh it wasn't. He was utterly incompetent, but by the same token I had that class at 11:00 so I usually blew it off, walked a half mile to the airport and had a liquid lunch at the bar there (I would have been 17 at the time, WI drinking age was 18 and the penalty even if I was caught was only $10 for me. The bar wasn't penalized in those days)

I had learned basic chem long before it was taught in the Eau Claire schools. Same with with simple newtonian Physics. I was never taught the Calculus by a school, I have only learned that by myself. I had a high school history teacher tell me, with a straight face & unwilling to accept correction, that John Kennedy died November 22, 1965. I walked out of the class room that day and never returned. We later worked out a compromise where I wrote a thesis sized paper on the design of the US WWII nuclear weapons and how that knowledge could be used by terrorists (in 1982) instead of my attending his class. I cleared an A that way.

I'm sorry but I will never accept standardized testing as meaning anything of any importance.

Funny thing. In my HS class? I had three like that. I was an arrogant SOB as Mr. SteveMcG complains, but I wasn't close to the top in that respect in my class. I had one science geek who ended at MIT and I had one Literary Geek who went to a small private college while writing exquisite plays. My best friend, who had skipped 2 grades, simply moved to Japan, married a local woman and is living there to this day translating movies.

He's the only one I get wistful about.

Hell, even if the fecal matter hit the rotating blade, Santorum would be a disaster as a nominee. His economic policies seem to basically be "marriage + kids = wealth." He's not really any different, policy wise, from his GOP stablemates, but he totally lacks the business experience that Romney claims makes him the best to "fix" the economy. A Santorum nomination would lock the GOP into fighting a culture war, one it cannot win, and would very likely cost them elections all the way down to the local level.

No wonder that "top GOP Senator" is saying he'll call for somebody new if Romney can't win in Michigan, because he's the only hope they have of remaining relevant if things go to hell in a handbasket economically between now and November.

The contraception business is turning against them, Boehner rolled over on the payroll tax cut, there's still no "Gene Eric Republican" to save them from the dread of either a brokered convention or a Romney nomination, and the budget fight looks to be a replay of last year's debacle with the Ryan Plan.

Wouldn't surprise me if some wake up every morning and check the news to see if Europe or China have imploded yet, in the hopes that it will bring bad economic news they can cheer about.

One of those leading the charge on the topic of this thread is a woman, whose response to an amendment that would allow women the choice of consenting to the procedure was to say that if they have to get consent, then it makes the state law of "informed consent" pointless.

Some are quiet, others are every bit as vindictive and bitter as the men who they are working alongside to pass such abominations. I notice most of the latter are of the older generations, which seem to be of the 50-60s mindset of what "proper" women should be like. Thankfully, they're also a dying breed, dinosaurs who will eventually be gone from the political landscape.

About 3 months ago I commented to my Faux News watching mother that with this being an election year there would be all sorts of non-economic or social issue legislation or controversies being fronted. Limbaugh was quoted earlier as saying he believes the GOP can win the culture war. And looking at just the "Big Three" alone, I think the GOP attempting a culture war would be electoral suicide.

While I don't necessarily disagree, remember that on several counts, the far right has already won the culture battles in the US. Several of its positions are already enshrined in the national consciousness through simple repetition, and there are no reasons to believe other positions could not join them. Gun culture and demonising liberals leap instantly to mind.

To put it another way, there are two questions:

1. Should we give money to Egypt, given that it's currently run by the military and has Islamicist parties rising in the democratic portions of government?

2. Should we try to interfere with their judicial process to free the Americans who have been arrested?

That they arrested Americans isn't a reason to cut them off. The reasons why they arrested them might be, but then it doesn't have to do with these particular cases.

The charges are murky and vague, but again, that's not really relevant. If they released the Americans, they'd still be the same people who decided to arrest them, and they'd still be arresting Egyptians and others for the same 'crimes'.

I'm pointing out that saying 'release them or we won't give you any more money' might get the very short-term solution of getting those Americans out, but A) it's pretty close to paying ransom, which we don't do and B) it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Sure, sure, American efforts to get out Americans makes perfect sense, I'm just saying tying it to the aid in particular doesn't-- especially since it's very close to ransom.

Egypt's military appears to be trying to draw a line of "Don't try to influence our government with your pro-democracy ways". The US can say "Fine, well, we only give money to countries that allow NGOs to operate", but it'd be a lie, since we support a lot of other shithead states that are highly anti-democratic.

The charges are murky and vague, but again, that's not really relevant. If they released the Americans, they'd still be the same people who decided to arrest them, and they'd still be arresting Egyptians and others for the same 'crimes'.

I'm pointing out that saying 'release them or we won't give you any more money' might get the very short-term solution of getting those Americans out, but A) it's pretty close to paying ransom, which we don't do and B) it doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Here's what Egypt arrested them for...

CAIRO — Relations between Washington and Cairo plummeted further when Egypt's military-controlled government announced that 19 Americans working for pro-democracy groups, including the son of a Cabinet official, would be ordered to stand trial on licensing and financial charges.

It highlights the widening divide between Washington and one of its closest allies over democratic reforms at a time of sweeping political upheaval across North Africa and the Middle East.

Did you read the article I linked above? The charges get a little vague when you drill down into them. It basically is a charge of "supporting the wrong people at the wrong time", or, more broadly "being a foreign organization attempting to influence Egyptian elections".

I don't know whether the US allows foreign NGOs to attempt to influence US elections, but even in the sad state of our campaign finance law, I doubt it. If Egyptians came to the US and set up an NGO to support various parties and positions, I assume you'd have a problem with that, right?

So, if they really were an open democracy, it actually would be pretty shitty of the US NGOs to try to influence their elections. But they're not, the military still maintains a lot of the power and the democratic process is pretty uncertain. And whether these people accused actually did do anything to try to influence elections I have no clue.

It was different-- in one respect it was quite broad, it was about all NGOs, not just NGOs trying to influence elections.

It was reworded, so that the punitive parts really only affected political orgs, and those bills passed.

Though the biggest red flag in the Egyptian arrests is that part of what they've arrested people for is establishing an NGO without permission of the government. First of all, given that stuff has been so transitory and tumultuous, it's obviously silly to start cracking down hard on rules and regulations so quickly. But also, it's the government saying that only NGOs it approves of can exist. Theoretically, the government could approve an NGO agitating for reform of the government, but I somehow doubt it.

The trial represents an escalation in what has become the deepest crisis in U.S.-Egyptian relations in decades. American officials have said the investigation could hinder the more than $1 billion in U.S. aid that Cairo receives. Egyptian authorities have blasted what they call U.S. interference in legal affairs.

Egypt's state news agency reported that the trial would open before a Cairo court on Feb. 26. It said 19 of the 43 defendants are Americans and 16 are Egyptians. The rest are Germans, Palestinians and Jordanians.
The Americans work for four U.S.-based groups: the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute, Freedom House and a group that trains journalists.

Only seven of the Americans are in Egypt, and all have been barred from travel. Some have sought refuge at the American Embassy in Cairo, including Sam LaHood, who heads IRI's Egypt office and is the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

It remains unclear if they will attend the trial. U.S. Embassy officials were not immediately available for comment.

Spring precedes Summer however. I'm rejecting this notion that the Arab Spring served or serves no purpose. There is this idea that they should have left well enough alone and not have overthrown Mubarak (although many in his regime are still in power). He remains a criminal facing trial even under the military power. It was the people of Egypt that decided this and not the American people nor I. They decided this was the best route for the future of Egypt and when push comes to shove it's none of my business. So Arab Spring? More power to them. The work has just begun.

There is no some international super-body that decides what states are democratic, what are pseudo-democratic, etc. Every pseudo-democratic state sees itself as democratic, and is thus able to use the "what's good for the goose" argument to use or misuse measures of democratic states. Which is why democratic and pseudo-democratic states have to play by largely the same rules - unless democratic states are willing to label the pseudo-democratic states as such and, most importantly, act on this.

(I'm leaving the question of continuum aside - democracy is not an on/off state.)

Okay, but that would obviously be the next step in the discussion. Say that Heartland wants to spend a bunch of money down in Costa Rica encouraging nuisance freedom of information type attacks on climate scientists and ecologists there. It could be easily done under the rubric of human rights-- as could an organization claiming the current government was trampling human rights and should be ousted and have a right-wing government put in place.

So the problem I see with "limiting influence bill" is two-fold.

First of all, shitting on human rights NGOs in democratic countries legitimizes the same for pseudo-democratic countries.

Second, democratic countries do not always act democratic, and may, for periods of time, be in a state of "illness", all with the support of the majority or at least plurality of the population. Which is why human rights NGOs should be able to act unhindered in democratic countries too.

That way when he gets off probation he can get another job as a cop and continue to violate his oath and the civil rights of the community. Good idea.

Well then, it's a pretty unfounded statistic. I, for one, don't know the percentage of atheists who would claim with certainty that god does not exist. Atheism, after all, is merely a lack of belief in god, and I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that most atheists are agnostics to boot.

One could be speaking in the absolute language and one could be speaking in everyday language of probabilities.
In everyday language phrases like "Napoleon existed" and "Santa does not exist" are unremarkable. It can be argued that despite there always being possible defeaters for these claims (e.g. maybe historical record about Napoleon was forged, and nobody has actually proved Santa does not exist, so there is a possibility of him existing) we don't frown at them. So if by "God doesn't exist" someone means "No, I don't claim absolute knowledge, but there are this, this and this probabilistic reasons to not seriosly consder God's existence", it's OK.

In absolute language - such as might be used in philosophical musings - the absolute claim of gods not existing is pretty problematic.

I haven't been keeping up recently with Cooper. Thought maybe he sold-out after getting his own daytime show. He seemed hopeful for a time there. In a journalist that actually confronts false statements and such instead of just sitting there and nodding his head.

Are you honestly equating the commentary on the CNN piece with what we've seen on the Fox pieces? You think the level of virulence, the consistency of it, the sheer volume of it, is anywhere remotely the same?
