Obama Family Gets a New Puppy, Daily Caller Says: “The Obamas Do Not Have Any White Dogs”

Unbelievable

Of course the right wing is losing their marbles again because the Obama family has a new puppy. That’s absolutely normal for them and totally expected.

But the Daily Caller takes it into flat-out racist territory: The Obamas Got a New Puppy, Everyone!

“A Portuguese Water Dog can range in cost wildly. On average, one will pay between $1,400 and $2,000. President Barack Obama has this breed of animal,” according to an answer on Ask.com.

With the addition of Sunny, the Obamas now have two black Portuguese water dogs.

The Obamas do not have any white dogs.

Remember though — there’s no racism on the right. At all. Ever. Totally made up by the left, who are the true racists.

Wildmon: Secular Progressives ‘Hate The God Of The Bible’

Wildmon admitted that Christians in America are not suffering the same sort of persecution as Christians in other nations around the world, but warned that if America continues to follow this path, that same sort of persecution will soon be happening here “if you continue to denigrate people and their beliefs and their Bible.”

Wildmon blamed it all on secular progressives who are “progressing toward anarchy … or communism” and who “hate the Judeo-Christian worldview; in essence, they won’t tell you this necessarily, but they hate the god of the Bible ” and seek to rebel against him:

How much can someone really hate a fictional character? I don’t hate Palpatine, Vader, or Thulsa Doom, and they were all bad guys.

Now the people who write awful fanfiction, those people I hate.

I like how they throw the price of the dog in there too. Bo was a gift from Ted Kennedy I believe, and so the hell what if they got Sunny from a breeder?(I personally think shelter dogs deserve priority, but ymmv) They have a kid who is allergic to dogs and this breed is considered hypoallergenic because of the low amount of shedding- both fur and dander. Plus, they are fluffy and cute and if you bitch about puppies you’re an asshole. Period, end of story. Asshole of Monumental Proportions. Congratulations.

Arizona Minuteman arrested for pointing AR-15 rifle at sheriff’s deputy

Richard Malley, 49, and two other group members were patrolling the area along Interstate 8 in search of illegal activity when two deputies approached, according to court documents. The Minutemen watch for unauthorized immigrants and drug smugglers crossing to Arizona from Mexico.

Malley pointed his rifle and flashlight at one of the deputies. He was also armed with a .45 caliber pistol and a fixed-blade knife. The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer, but Malley did not lower his weapon. Instead, he demanded that the deputy provide him with identification.

The deputy showed Malley his Maricopa County Sheriff uniform, including his badge, the patches on his sleeves and the word “Sheriff” across his chest. He then asked Malley to lay down his weapons, but Malley refused.

Malley was taken into custody once more deputies arrived. He said he thought the deputy was a drug smuggler and was in fear for his life.

“He’s lucky he’s still alive and he’s lucky my deputy is still alive. It could have been a very serious confrontation in the darkness at 9:30 at night,” Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told Fox 10. “Somebody is gonna get killed one of these days over this situation.”

I don’t know, I think a shoot out between Arpaio and the Minutemen would be a case of poetic justice.

OT: Sorry to interrupt, but I just saw this and thought it was pretty cool.

Synagogue’s completion means 1 house of worship done, 2 to go in tri-faith project

Temple Israel will move into its new west Omaha synagogue this month, a major step for keeping the congregation strong and for developing a site shared with Muslims and Christians.

Backers say the synagogue’s opening is evidence that the interfaith site, an idea that started taking root about eight years ago, will become reality. Plans call for building a church, a mosque and a center for all faiths near the synagogue as part of a tri-faith project.

The Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska will have a new partner at the church it plans to build — the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The diocese invited the synod to collaborate on forming a congregation at the new church. Nationally, the Episcopal Church and Evangelical Lutheran Church have worked together for more than a dozen years on shared ministries.

Dr. Syed Mohiuddin, president of the Omaha-based American Institute of Islamic Studies and Culture, said the synagogue gives the tri-faith project a big boost.

“Having the first cornerstone makes our project even more viable,” he said.

He hopes the site will become a national model of religious collaboration, understanding and respect. Organizers believe it might be the only site nationally where Jewish, Islamic and Christian congregations are intentionally planning to build houses of worship in the same place. […]

Quite often, the villain is more interesting than the hero, and I’m pretty sure that given the duality of human nature, on some level, the audience is enthralled by the bad guy, if not outright rooting for him. A truly solid actor can turn the villain into the centerpiece of a film.

You do get some interesting films where they have more complex hero-villain relationship where things are not black/white about the characters. TMC was doing Randolph Scott films last night and between “The Tall T”* and “Ride the High Country” Scott got to play both sides of the equation.

* - “The Tall T” was based on an Elmore Leonard story.

I’ve often thought that’s because heroes have certain rules they have to follow or else they are not the Hero anymore. They can’t be unethical, they can’t be immoral, they can’t be corrupt, etc.

The villain on the other hand can be as immoral, unethical, petty, sadistic or vindictive as they want and still make it fit the character. For that reason, to me, villains have more flexibility.

There’s a reason Darth Vader is probably the most popular of all Star Wars characters.

Our welcoming committee must be busy fixing a bike so I’ll step up and say it, “Welcome hatchling.”

I was indeed fixing a bike.

A nice man wanted to help a poor neighbor, so he brought the neghbor’s bike in for a seat post. Since he’s being nice to his neighbor, I thought I’d pitch in. “Want me to throw it up in the rack to air the tires and oil the chain?” ‘Sure!’

Hmm…. rear wheel doesn’t turn. Oh, it’s bent. I go to take the wheel off, and it falls off. But the axle is bent. And the brake pads are falling apart. And the cables are rusty.

Got him out of here $40 and 45 minutes later, with a fairly functional bike..

And partially that he was a cosmic bad-ass in Ep IV and Ep V. And then his character was assassinated by Lucas in Ep I-III.

Darth Vader is one of the greatest screen villains ever. His real time to shine was “The Empire Strikes Back”, where he strangled half the Imperial Starfleet command corps, menaced Billy Dee Williams, and of course, revealed some rather fascinating backstory that changed the dynamic between himself and the central protagonist.

Not to mention he just looked - and sounded - badass.

I’ve often thought that’s because heroes have certain rules they have to follow or else they are not the Hero anymore. They can’t be unethical, they can’t be immoral, they can’t be corrupt, etc.

A goody two-shoes hero can’t be. But some of the more interesting heroes are deeply flawed people who try to do the right thing.

Han Solo is considered a hero and the first time we see him he shoots Greedo, no questions asked. (And no, I don’t accept Lucas changing that scene. Han shot first, dammit.) Tony Stark is a womanizer, war profiteer, alcoholic and all-around arrogant asshole the first time we meet him and he ends up the hero.

I think the best heroes are the ones who aren’t perfect.

The villain on the other hand can be as immoral, unethical, petty, sadistic or vindictive as they want and still make it fit the character. For that reason, to me, villains have more flexibility.

There’s a reason Darth Vader is probably the most popular of all Star Wars characters.

Boba Fett called. He wanted to point out that despite not doing much in the films, he’s pretty damned popular. Hehe.

There’s something liberating about playing the villain. For an actor, they can get mean and nasty and do and say things that they wouldn’t do in real life. If they’re really good at their job, they’ll make us like or even sympathize with the bad guy as the story unfolds. Just look at Dexter. There are people who think he’s the hero of the story when he’s a serial killer.

I love a good villain. When the actor can make me feel empathy for a monster, that’s a win in my book.

Think what made Vader so effective a villain was the mystery behind him, who Anakin Skywalker was before his fall. Quite often, the villain is more interesting than the hero, and I’m pretty sure that given the duality of human nature, on some level, the audience is enthralled by the bad guy, if not outright rooting for him. A truly solid actor can turn the villain into the centerpiece of a film.

The SW Prequels are the worst steaming piles of Bantha poodoo to ever hit the screen. In short, a warning of what happens when Lucas surrounds himself with timid Yes-Men and isn’t challenged by creative people who will point out when something is stupid or makes no sense. That happened in the original trilogy and it was epic (even ROTJ). It was absent in the prequels and just see what happened.

Abrams tends to work best when he has a blank canvas to paint on. When he’s got somebody else’s work in front of him, he’s almost mystically compelled to slap it with white paint and then start over again. He can’t pull the “time travel reset button” on Star Wars that he could on Star Trek.

Everyone knows how police investigators spray a crime scene with Luminol to have blood protein illuminate when shown under black light.

Since he was elected, President Obama has metaphorically sprayed ‘Racistsall’ all over America. With a little ‘black’ light all the racist have shown up.

They may have tried to cover up their past crimes, but with Racistsall they pop right out.

Good one.

John Lithgow has done a few good villain turns. Both comic/over the top and not.

When he’s not comic as a villain, as a hitman in ‘Blow-Out’ and as the Trinity Killer on ‘Dexter’, Lithgow’s villains have tended towards icemen whose demeanor is in itself terrifying.

Louise Fletcher says she can’t bear to watch “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” because the Nurse Ratched character she won an Oscar for is so cruel.

“I find it too painful,” said Fletcher, 78. “It comes with age. I can’t watch movies that are inhumane.”

[…]

Fletcher said better known actresses turned down the role, and it wasn’t until she saw the film for the first time with an audience, in Chicago, that she was convinced she pulled it off.

In scene where McMurphy throws Nurse Ratched against the wall and chokes her in a fit of rage, she said, “they all stood up and cheered in the theater and were stomping their feet. That got to me. I realized, ‘Hey, I created a real villain here.’”

I guarantee you when Lindelof got involved (because Ridley Scott seems to be old, tired, and in ‘I dont give a damn’ mode) he went all Lost on it and none of the unanswered questions actually have answers so the series is now in ‘make up shit as you go’ mode. The sequel or series ending if there’s more than one sequel will be as disappointing and ridiculous as the ending of Lost, the new BSG, or the Sopranos.

And to answer your question, I don’t think anyone with a serious understanding of microbiology or evolution was on the payroll of the production for Prometheus.

The Engineer in the opening of “Prometheus” was a sacrifice, if you will; the substance he drank dissolved him allowing his DNA to enter into the water, and thus creating life. The spaceship was full of other Engineers.

The question, which will presumably be answered in the sequel, is why, after the Engineers created us, and visited us on several occasions, did they decide to wipe us out 2,000 years ago? What pushed them to the decision to commit genocide against humanity?

Not really sure. I was never into science fiction - this has hurt me in being a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory because they reference science fiction (and superheroes) so much. My dad (may he rest in peace) was a big Star Trek fan so I’ve seen all the original episodes but that’s really it. I don’t have children which may explain the Harry Potter movies remaining unseen.

Iowa GOP County Chair Resigns, Says Party ‘Headed In Wrong Direction’

In 2012, the Polk GOP lost Polk County by over 32,000 votes. Until 2002, Republicans were elected to the State House from Des Moines. In 2012, Republicans lost 2 State House seats in suburban, Republican-leaning districts and came two dozen votes from losing a third. Facts are stubborn things. I think we are now headed in the wrong direction on several fronts and regretfully must step aside.

It’s my opinion that rather than fix the problems that led to such a massive 2012 defeat, the GOP does not seem to seriously want to fix the issues. I think helping a dysfunctional Party that does not want to address its problems is enabling. I do not believe in enabling. I debated this for weeks and am certain this is the only course.

“They were farmers in a field of stars. They planted, they watched their crops grow, they tended; and sometimes, mercilessly, they had to weed.”

It’s not particularly plausible that seeding the Earth with DNA 4 billion years ago would result in the evolution from single celled organisms to animals that have “exactly the same DNA” (They actually made this claim in the flick) as they did.

So I’m not sure if makes more sense that they did this sacrifice 4 billion years ago, or if they did it a few million years ago and it only effected primate evolution. I put that part of my brain on vacation to just enjoy the movie, but it was hard.

I think they should do a movie about The Golem. There were some real old-timey silent movies, but nothing modern.

There was a comic book series in the ‘80’s which my kids loved.

I think it would make a great movie!

That would be cool. The most recent iteration of the Golem in the English language filmdom was the movie “It!” from 1966 starring Roddy McDowall.

re: #165 Backwoods_Sleuth

My favorite villain actor of all time: Christopher Walken.

I thought he was great in one of his lesser known roles. He played the family leader Brad Whitewood Sr. in At Close Range.

Wen I first saw that movie I thought it was an outrageous plot. Then a year or so later I was reading some crime books and came across the real story the movie was based on, Bruce Alfred Johnston Sr. and his family of thieves. The real story was as outrageous as the movie plot.

In the movie there is a scene of Walken in a pickup truck where he realizes the state police know all about his criminal enterprise. He comes completely unglued. It is very dramatic, angry, mad and resigned all at the same time.

If you do not know the movie or the story about the Pennsylvania family of thieves it is a fascinating story. It is almost unbelievable, but all true.

Here is a Wiki on Bruce Alfred Johnston Sr

It’s not particularly plausible that seeding the Earth with DNA 4 billion years ago would result in the evolution from single celled organisms to animals that have “exactly the same DNA” (They actually made this claim in the flick) as they did.

So I’m not sure if makes more sense that they did this sacrifice 4 billion years ago, or if they did it a few million years ago and it only effected primate evolution. I put that part of my brain on vacation to just enjoy the movie, but it was hard.

And how did the Engineers themselves seem to have been unchanged over millions or billions of years? Stagnant culture?

I also don’t believe that they intended to commit genocide on us. I think that each time they visited Earth they manipulated our genome and/or culture. The ‘science’ behind “Prometheus” is the same sort of ‘science’ behind “At The Mountains of Madness” “The Call of Chthulhu” “Chariots of the Gods”. You may have a point about the Engineers not wanting to wipe us out, but to accelerate human evolution; perhaps the unlucky Charlie Holloway was what they had in mind for us.

Being a gamer, the idea of greatest villain brings to mind some names that probably won’t be familiar. Like Kane or SHODAN. Though I’m sure enough folks have heard the name Andrew Ryan by now.

Games are often played for a lot longer than the 2-3 hours a movie runs, so there are possibilities for making game villains epic on a scale that is really difficult to do in a movie.

It was good as a sci-fi movie, good as a action movie, but like all the TNG movies it was B A D as a Star Trek The Next Generation story.

They throw the temporal prime directive out the window for no good reason dozens of times. There’s a shitton of lazy story writing and handwaved motivations. Picard goes from a deep cerebral intellectual to a shallow vengeful maniac action hero who’s too old to be a vengeful maniac action hero.

Fischer: ‘I Think We May Be Headed Toward Bloodshed In America’

“There are a number of avenues,” Fischer stated, “starting right where we’re at right now that could lead to bloodshed, could lead to anarchy, could lead to chaos in America.”

After insisting that he does not want to see anything like that happen, Fischer warned that the fact that members of Congress are reluctant to hold town hall meetings during the August recess could lead to a revolution.

“If our elected officials will not listen to us, if they will not meet with us, if they will not respond to the urgent appeal of their own constituents, the people that elected them to office, then eventually you might get to the point [where] people will just get fed up and then you’ll start having some very, very unpredictable things that will happen”:

The TOS movies were great (of course I’m not counting ST:V because that was an abomination).

TMP was a big screen version of what happened in many TOS episodes. Dealing with an out of control machine/anomaly/natural phenomena. It’s only flaw was being inaccessible to non-trekkies.

TWOK-SFS-TVH was “The Trilogy” and covered all of the bases that good TOS stories did (super villain, klingons, anomaly), and had the bonus of being accessible to non-trekkies.

The Undiscovered Country, a few flaws aside, was an excellent send off for the crew and old Enterprise.

Then TNG movies came and ruined everything.

Their worldview is and I hate to use the word is simply anti-American. If they want a government where the church rules supreme over the rights of the individual. Either move to the Middle East, make a time machine and go to the Dark Ages, or more practically join the rest of us in the post Dark Ages world.

This x1000. Of course they are anti-American. The US is a creature of the same Enlightenment they hate with every fiber of their being.

THe TOS movies were great (of course I’m not counting ST:V because that was an abonimation).

If ST:TMP felt like a extended ST:TOS TV episode, that’s because it was; the script that became TMP started life as a pilot episode for a new ST series in the mid-70s called Star Trek: Phase II. That was going to be the flagship program for what would have been, at that time, a fourth broadcast TV network that Paramount was looking at starting up; plans for the Paramount Network fell through at the time (it would be almost 20 years before Paramount’s plan came to fruition with UPN, anchored with ST: Voyager), but Michael Eisner (then head of Paramount) liked the story enough to make it a movie and the rest is history.

The law already provides for those, its often that the states don’t accurately list the mentally ill.

Florida recently had a minor dust-up over this issue. The governor’s commission on the mentally ill recommended that the law be changed so that a person diagnosed as a threat to himself/herself or others who voluntarily agreed to accept treatment would lose his/her rights to own a gun until certified as no longer a danger by a judge.

The legal change, written with the active aid of the NRA, was a smart, sensible change. But that did not prevent it from being attacked by dudebro groups such a the GOA whose main stated quarrels seemed to rest on conspiracy theories, and whose real problem with the law seemed to be an intense hatred for governmental authority.

I’d view threats of violence as being in the same category as violence, as least with respect to defining terrorism.

Even so, leaking US intelligence secrets to the world/press/foreign governments etc. is mishandling classified information and/or espionage, and should not be regarded as terrorism, unless a direct link to operational terrorists can be shown

Generations was, to me, a decent enough segue from the TOS movies to the TNG films. Malcolm McDowell as the villain and James T. Kirk going out in a hero’s death? What’s not to like (other than the Enterprise-D getting destroyed; that sucked)?

First Contact and Insurrection were perfectly serviceable (and enjoyable, IMO) action movies, even without the Star Trek imprimatur; however, I did like the parallels of Picard and Moby-Dick’s Ahab in First Contact (and Alfre Woodard’s counterpoint to Stewart). Nemesis, though, I could have done without.

The biggest problems with the TNG movies, as with Voyager and Enterprise, tended to start and end with Rick Berman and Brannon Braga.

Cool. Author’s name is Carcaterra. I’m not sure if you’d find it under fiction or non-fiction. Carcaterra swears everything happened in the book and film were true but I am a little skeptical and I am not sure how the libraries classify material as such. On my personal shelf I have it under fiction tho.

Gee Bill, what else do you have in your crystal ball? Not exactly groundbreaking news that someone who quit on their state to become a right wing folk hero and has increasingly become unlikable in their state would have no future in politics. I wish he’d apologize for propping up this woman left and right though. Kristol was a huge backer of hers in 2008.

I mean, fine, maybe they had some desktops that they had to rip up too. But is it really that hard to only tell the actual truth? Is the temptation to embellish the story that strong, that you have to grab some other parts to set next to your laptop for the picture? Parts which, I hasten to note, probably would not even physically fit inside the laptop?

Frankly, small lies like this say much more about one’s character than a big, important, damaging lie. You can rationalize a big lie and still try to be an honest person the rest of the time. When you lie about little things, even when it doesn’t really help you, it just means you have a callous disregard for the truth.

News organizations should not be in the business of having a callous disregard for the truth.

Catching Watts in an error is easy. Just go visit the SPC (Storm Prediction Center) and check the 2002 record against the current.

In 2002, by the end of August there had been 535 tornadoes. That is less than the 716 reported as of mid-August 2013. Now (another touch of dishonesty) that’s 716 reported, not actual, but the actual rate through May of 2013 is fairly close to the reported as it’s been in most years — it’s not going to be over 20% different. Oh, and the end of May 2013 actual is higher than end of May 2002.

In other words it is not a record low year for tornadoes. It’s below average, but not a record.

By the way the 1221 number Watts claims for ‘average through August’ is interesting given the annual average is 1253 (according to NOAA).

With all of the actual integrated circuits removed from the board, the likelihood of identifying it is slim to none. Nevertheless, the fact that it does not belong in a Macbook is quite evident.

The Guardian is under the impression no one on the internet knows what the inside of a computer looks like.

The Guardian is under the impression people have no idea whatsoever about any computer technology. That is how they expected the whole NSA spying thing to get over and get the big play. They counted on people knowing nothing about how their computer works, connects to the internet, what a server is, what storage is, algorithms, sweeps, scans, meta data…the whole shebang.

And this is just proof of it in a simple form.

But it won’t matter the story is out there and it is fact even where it is not fact.

Freight Train to Hell —pdf

Excerpts, with minor redactions by me:

There are three classes of serious security problems with [mumble]: the [mumble] specification, the vendor’s implementation of the protocol and the [mumble], and how it’s all used in the wild by the end users. While none of them are individually showstoppers, when combined they create a monumental security problem about as large as a digital Grand Canyon.

In sum, you may not know it, but your goose may already be cooked and you’re simply asking [mumble] and your server vendors to pass the orange sauce.

re: #98 Dr Lizardo

Darth Vader is one of the greatest screen villains ever. His real time to shine was “The Empire Strikes Back”, where he strangled half the Imperial Starfleet command corps, menaced Billy Dee Williams, and of course, revealed some rather fascinating backstory that changed the dynamic between himself and the central protagonist.

Not to mention he just looked - and sounded - badass.

Early in Ep VI: “The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.” A contender for best movie line ever.
