“I think it was a gross exaggeration, but have no doubt that that was a great propaganda value for the Cuban government, which is oppressive, repressive and continues to jail dissidents, and continues to be … easily the most oppressive government in our hemisphere,” McCain said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I don’t think he should shake hands with someone who continues to violate his own country’s human rights.”

I was in the store the other day and I heard the most WTF lame Christmas music EVER.
You know how every artist has to record a “Christmas album” and do their own styling of the usual lame, cheesy, crappy Christmas music.
Some guy was singing “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” in “Bing Crosby” style. Real sloooooow, like some “romantic” ballad.
It was like AYEEEE SAAAAAW MOOOOOMMMMYY KIISSSSING SAAAAAAANNTA CLAAUUUUUUS, UUUNDEEERNEEEEEATH THHHHE MISSSSSSSTLETOOOOE LAAAAASSSSSSTT NIIIIIIGHT and it went on and on and on for hours on end.
I was waiting in the checkout lane and the entire time it took to sing the first two bars.
What the fucking fuck?
Horrific.

I haven’t heard that one, but I can well imagine. Perhaps we could use it as a way to get suspected terrorists to confess. Of course it could be construed as torture, and also it’s entirely possible that the listener would gladly confess to everything and anything including the Lindbergh Kidnapping.
There is something about the Christmas season that brings out the most saccharine, over the top, maudlin music there is. I wonder if there is an equivalent in other cultures?

I think that’s just reflective of the rise of recorded music. As it became popular and common place in the 40s, 50s, and 60s a lot of artists either recorded versions of Christmas classics or wrote their own Christmas songs. Since there was nothing else out there, a lot of these caught on and became “Iconic” versions.
Now, most pop music is just artist X or group Y rerecording those classic songs. There haven’t been many truly original, good Christmas songs in quite sometime.
Occasionally something will break through (like TSO’s Sarajevo 12/24) but for the most part, pop Christmas music really is tired and derivative.

Also, why the hell is it that nearly every Christmas “musical” celebration on TV now is “country” themed? There are other kinds of music(and dear god NO not a Justin Bieber Christmas, just kill me) that would be perfectly fine. But nooo, it’s always the same stupid people singing the same crappy songs with a fake ass twang added.
And, if I see one more Duck Dynasty themed thing in the store, I am going to go postal. I watched that show, and actually almost liked that family until they faked two of the kids getting dental work done for some scripted show premise. I got sucked into the having family dinners and working their way up from extreme poverty (at least the elders of the family anyway), but OMG I am so OVER them. One of my best friends thinks this is the best show EVER to be on TV. Ack. Overexposure much? Also too, getting their picture taken with The Palin didn’t endear me to them much either. eesh.

The shrinking market of “traditional” Christmas adherents is leading to a concentration of said celebrants in those same regions of the country that like “country” (which is not what it was when I was a kid) music, which happen to be the same crowd the GOP is working and which Atavism Inc. markets.

(She is the daughter of my sister’s good friend, and is staying at my mother’s house while taking GED classes and such)
All three laptops (two Lenovo IdeaPads and an Asus X200ca) were under $300 and have touch screens.

This is the Republican Party in 2013.
He if you ask me has pretty much surrendered anything resembling being a statesman for the bitter hack he’s become since Obama beat him in 2008. It’s too bad. Some people lose presidential elections and they make peace with it like George McGovern did. Others act like McCain..

The racial makeup of the CDP was 63.15% White, 13.03% African American, 0.55% Native American, 2.03% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 18.29% from other races, and 2.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.11% of the population.

Today was Challah Day. First batch is in the oven. I will put up a picture when they are all done.
I have 2 chicken breasts here. Found this recipe in one of the cookbooks in my collection and I just happened to have all the ingredients* in the pantry:
1 small jar orange marmalade (10 oz)
2 Tbsp. honey
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp lime juice
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground pepper
3 cloves garlic, crushed
Mix together all the above ingredients and marinate the chicken breasts for 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 425.
Peel and slice 1 onion, 1 potato, 1 sweet potato, and arrange on a foil baking pan. Place the chicken breasts on top. Pour the marinade sauce over it all.
Bake for 40 minutes.
*The recipe also called for 1 orange, sliced, arranged on the bottom of the pan, but I didn’t have an orange and so I used a sweet potato.
Also have some wild rice leftover, that should go well.

RBS is having a less than perfect evening. Did a custom pen just for myself, a piece of cross-cut birdseye maple with a ton of figuring in it. Turned it last night, put the finish on (20 coats of thin superglue). I wet sanded, polished and waxed it this evening and it was one of the most fantastic pieces of wood I’ve ever done. When I went to assemble the pen my heart sank.
I had put two of the bushings that set the size of the ends of the sections in the wrong order. There is no way that I can use it, and since one section is too small there is no way to turn it “UP” to size. I’m going to ponder on how I can use the pieces, but I have a feeling that it was a good practice, but I’m so let down. This was not for sale, this was my gift to me. I haven’t made a mistake like that in years.

the term “A deal is worth discussing” covers a pretty big range. I think it’s just a way that communication channels can be kept open. I’d hate to see him get anything other than the full weight of the law coming down on his head, but the operational need to get that information that was taken back under control may have priority. That also raises the issue of how can you be sure that there aren’t any copies of it left out there? Not a good situation.

Marinating boneless/skinless chicken thighs in Hoisin-garlic marinade from the Soy Vey people, but you have to goose it with more Hoisin, some Black Bean Garlic Sauce, chopped ginger, and chopped garlic. Later, I’ll broil or grill them, depending on whether I really want to bother going outside and swapping in a new propane tank.
There’s also a pair of Tri-tips, which I’ll be trying to cook to medium rare. And there’s lettuce and spinach for salad. Sadly, I’m unable to get Mrs. Jockey to believe that leaf lettuce and a homemade vinaigrette, with carrots, radishes, and sliced Kalamatas makes a good salad, but at least it’s not Iceberg lettuce with Thousand Island dressing.
Meanwhile, the older boy made a pan of fudge while we slept last night, so I got back at him by dragging him out into the light. I took him for a 2 1/2 mile walk during which he complained about how bright the sun is. One week shy of the lowest angle sun of the whole year, and it’s too much for him. Any more than that, and his skin starts to bubble and smoke like Christopher Lee in a Dracula movie.

The way I learned from my Grandfather, who was a classicly trained chef. Rub the roasts down with a salt rub (I like the montreal steak seasoning), let it set for about 8-12 hours (Idealy). Let it come up to room temp or so, pop into a 200 degree oven for an hour a pound. Take it out, cover it, let it rest 20 minutes, slice and bask in the admiration.
It comes out a perfect Med-Rare, so juicy it’s unbelieveable. I do a sirloin tip roast like that about twice a month.

I kind of doubt it’s a serious story. They have some quotes but I haven’t seen the context yet. There’s also a huge qualifier. Amnesty may be considered if we can prove the Chinese and Russians don’t already have the docs. They almost certainly already have them and proving a negative (that they don’t have them) is a very difficult task. I’m not surprised that any idea, including amnesty, is kicking around the NSA and White House but I don’t think it’s a serious consideration. It looks like sensationalism for the sake of creating internet buzz on the party of CBS, probably not much more.

One of the shops I called actually told me that even Apple wouldn’t fix these monitors any more because they were so out of date.
But that was wrong - Apple does fix these monitors, for a flat rate price of… feel the pain approaching… $500. Ow. And they have to ship it to a “repair depot.”
But the alternative is buying a new one. The biggest monitor Apple makes now is 27 inches, and it’s more than $1000. So I bit the bullet and went for the repair.

Actually I’m already pretty sure it’s not the control board, because the power was still on and working fine. The USB and Firewire ports were working, and the light came on. Could be the backlighting element. In any case, it’s already committed to Apple’s tender hands.

I wonder if some day Apple will introduce a monster display. I don’t know why, if they cater to the video crowd with their top of the line PowerMacs, why they don’t have a selection of monster displays. Maybe Apple thinks those really wanting them will just go to third party vendors anyway.

A deal for Snowden?
NSA leak task force leader says a deal with Snowden is worth discussing, but the general who heads the NSA is against any deal
Well, at least they’re talking with people who actually work at the NSA, not some contractor/poseur.
If we trade someone Russia wants back, in return for they escort him to the airport and put him on a US-bound plane… would that meet the exact phrasing “a deal for Snowden”?

Yeah no kidding. And these idiots act like there isn’t going to be mass chaos if there are multiple shooters. IF I Recall right, when Gabby Giffords was shot in Tucson, there was a man who had a concealed weapon and was ready to use it but he realized that it would do more harm than good. This idea that more people with guns will somehow prevent a tragedy is based in fantasy.

The other alternative is to go double screen. Get the screen real estate but at a more reasonable cost.

My grandson uses a 24 in flat screen tv for his computer and a 39 in flat screen TV for his gaming. Priorities.
I use a 24 in LG flat screen monitor; quite enough when you consider I just converted from a clunker of a 15 in last year (the LG was a discard from one of his friends for $20—yes, I’m cheap). Unfortunately, the munchkin used a ball point to draw on the lower right quadrant yesterday. You can’t see it except when light shines on it, though; doesn’t affect the image—yet. I cleaned off the ink with no trouble, but the impressions are there.

Hoft being dropped by an insurance company puts him in a group of millions of Americans who have had something similar done to them, before the ACA even existed.
Thus the ACA is there to help exactly the likes of Hoft in the very situation he finds himself.
This means that “Obamacare” is exactly the opposite of what Hoft and the haters whine so repeatedly about the ACA.
This raises again the point as to why that portion of the country that has depended so much on government innovation the past 70 years - starting with the TVA and continuing today with everything from EBT to the ACA to economically and politically located military bases (that’s right, military spending is government spending) - are those who cry the loudest about GOVERNMENT TYRANNY!! Averting war in Syria was undoubtedly a great success for Iran and Russia in the Middle East and during his stay in Tehran, Lavrov sought to extend this successful experience to other crisis-stricken regions such as Afghanistan.
After the planned exit of US forces from Afghanistan in 2014, terrorist and extremist groups, operating under the badge of Islam, are likely to take advantage of such void in terms of military power to trigger a new devastating war in Central Asia and Caucasus through Tajik and Uzbek borders. Such war will definitely spill over into North Caucasus and Iran’s eastern borders.
Given the observer status of Iran and Afghanistan in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Russia counts on Iran for taking measures within the framework of SCO’s security models to establish stability and security in Afghanistan and eradicate the scourge of drug in the war-wracked country.
Karzai’s always been a dick but this could explain his recent behavior. It would be an ironic twist of history if he sold out Afghanistan to be a protectorate of Russia.

One thing that must be done, guns or not, is that teachers need some training in dealing with an active shooter situation. For grade and middle schools, that should only extend to staff, but high schools should have a school-wide drill at least once a year. I don’t like it, but nothing deals with panic like training.

On the subject of usurious interest rates… when I was in the Army one of my soldiers lost his car to a “title loan” joint. They lent him 1000 bucks on a nice little ford escort, nothing special, but a good solid car. The interest rate was 24.98% per MONTH. He had a 250 dollar payment each month just to cover the interest. Worst part, the bastards let him re-fi the first couple of payments, so when he finally came to me, he was at something like 300 per month in interest alone.
It’s legal in TN (I think they may have changed the laws since then), because it wasn’t technically a loan, he had pawned the title, and this was the ‘service charge’. He ended up losing the car and I know it had to have sold for probably 5k or so.
Rant over

I think you have to be fairly financially secure to do that, in addition to being securely employed. More power to you if you’re in that position.
Too many people no longer have that option in a still recovering economy and a changing financial landscape in which so much income has pushed upward, not into the average person’s paycheck.

Despite leading 26-3 at halftime, the Dallas Cowboys were outscored by the Green Bay Packers in the second half 34-10, ultimately leading to 37-36 win by the Packers. The Cowboys fell on their butts on a day when the Eagles’ loss to the Vikings gave Dallas a real chance to make progress.
The wins by Green Bay and Minnesota, coupled with the Bears’ victory over the Browns means that every NFC North team that played today won.

The writing was worse than the acting, which was a shame because I liked the cast and the rest of the show. The overall story was fine, but some of the dialogue and inter-personal stuff seemed too awkward.
Then again, I wonder how much of it, like the Doctor Who reboot, was forced into its story by the BBC corporate directors squeezing the shows into certain demographics, when a creative writer might have taken stories to different places.

Torchwood was definitely playing towards a more adult crowd. More adult relationships, themes, and played off the Doctor mythos.
The first season of the reboot with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor was trying to find its footing and Davies trying to find a good balance on the different aspects of the show. I think when they brought Tennant on board and he stuck around for a couple of seasons, it let Davies and then Moffett develop the characters and story arcs more fully, especially the companions. Amy Pond and Rory are definitely among the most notable of the companions to come along, perhaps with only Sarah Jane being better (4th Doctor companion).

As I remember it, they tried back in the Third Doctor’s run to make it more “serious” and less reliance on deus ex machina, effectively grounding the TARDIS and limiting the Doctor to what he could scrounge while exiled on Earth. Though they never quite got away from that, as he still relied a lot on his sonic screwdriver to get out of hairy situations.

Today was Challah Day. First batch is in the oven. I will put up a picture when they are all done.
I have 2 chicken breasts here. Found this recipe in one of the cookbooks in my collection and I just happened to have all the ingredients* in the pantry:
1 small jar orange marmalade (10 oz)
2 Tbsp. honey
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp lime juice
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground pepper
3 cloves garlic, crushedMix together all the above ingredients and marinate the chicken breasts for 1 hour.
DON’T TRY THIS.
IT IS GAGGINGLY SWEET.

Here’s a movie I was very interested to see, by Gareth Edwards who directed the new Gozilla film: Monsters.
And you know what? It pretty much sucked. It’s like a reality show with giant monsters, only you never really see the giant monsters. Just way too much time with characters looking out windows, pondering. Or painfully “relating” to each other in hopelessly contrived ways.
One star. Cannot recommend.
That’s what was wrong with Cloverfield IMO

Cloverfield was great compared to this. I didn’t like Cloverfield very much, but it did have a few moments. This had nothing. One of the dullest movies I’ve seen recently.

I’m never sure if it’s their intention, but it seems most of the guys who do those “found footage” films write the characters as douchely as possible. “Yeah, just act like a complete asshole, so that the audience will actually cheer your gory demise.”

The police are striking and people are taking advantage by looting, according to this report from 12/10/13.
“Seven people have been killed in northern Argentina amid widespread looting sparked by a police strike over pay.
“Four people, including a police officer, have been reported dead in the province of Chaco, with three other fatalities in the provinces of Jujuy and Tucuman.
“This leaves the number of dead from the violence at nine.
“Riots and looting first erupted last week in the northern city of Cordoba when police went on strike to demand better wages and working conditions.”
I can’t find any stories more recent than that.

Seems like I used lemon juice or zest to cut the sweet, I did use mainly marmalde and honey, but i know it wasn’t 2 tbs., also I may have used just a tiny splash of cheap-ass balsamic vinegar to add some depth to it. Not sure, but it’s the type of thing I would probably do knowing me.

Maybe some of you good folks can help me. For the past two days I’ve suddenly been shown as following random people (spammers) and just today they’ve been using my account to tweet crap about getting cheap phones or something. I reported them to twitter as spam, but was wondering if there was some other sort of action I could take, or if this has happened to anyone else. My account is private, and I normally only follow about 10 people. Is this some sort of virus, or has my account been hacked?

Yes they do. They believe their own fiction as if it were the truth.
No, quite often they don’t. When called on it in a friendly, casual conversation they will often admit, with a smile, that it’s just bullshit, at best pr strategy. They do adhere to it though and will continue to repeat it even after previously admitting it’s bullshit.
That’s because the real purpose of the lie is as a shibboleth. When the lie is accepted unblinkingly and then repeated they know they’re among their own. It’s a way of identifying fellow gang members from the others.
