Russia tells West it’s time for common ground on Ukraine - or else
US and EU officials have shuttled through Kiev to exert the kind of behind-the-scenes stage management of which Russia is often accused, and without ponying up financial aid. And, alarmingly for Moscow, this diplomacy appears to be working.
“Lavrov’s article underscores Russia’s growing unease about Ukraine,” says Sergei Strokan, a foreign affairs columnist who covers Ukraine for Kommersant.
Mr. Strokan argues that Russia’s overt political meddling in Ukraine’s 2004 Orange Revolution backfired, which is why Russian President Vladimir Putin has instead opted to use his checkbook this time. But it has not paid off, he says.
“The Europeans and Americans, who haven’t put up a penny yet, have the diplomatic advantage in Kiev…. And we’re standing there looking like idiots,” Mr. Strokan says.

Russia is trying to put together some kind of “free trade zone” (I forget the term they are using) of former soviet properties. Of course all the taxes and duties will go to Russia. So I don’t think they’re interested in annexing countries entirely. There was a curious line at the end of the CSM article I didn’t really understand….
“Lavrov’s article can be seen as a last appeal to the West, to convince them to come to their senses and stop moving these dividing lines eastward across the face of Europe,” says Vladimir Zharikhin, deputy director of the Kremlin-funded Institute of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Moscow.
Eventually, he argues, Moscow may feel it has no alternative but to ally politically and military with China. “It’s not where we want to be, not part of our thinking right now, but we could be made to feel like there’s no other choice,” he says.
I don’t really know what that’s supposed to mean but I suspect the Chinese aren’t going to be very interested. China wants to manufacture and sell to the West, Russia just wants to run a protection racket or small weak countries. China doesn’t need them.

f[n_Integer] := Flatten[ Table[ #1] & @@@ FactorInteger[n]]; NextPrim[n_] := Block[ {k = n + 1}, While[ !PrimeQ[k], k++ ]; k]; m = 2; Do[ While[p = f[m]; l = Length[p]; t = Table[m + i, {i, 0, n - 1}]; k = 1; While[k < l + 1 && Union[ Mod[t, NestList[ NextPrim, p[[k]], n - 1]]] != {0}, k++ ]; k == l + 1, m++ ]; Print[m], {n, 2, 50}]
I know what it’s supposed to do, but I’m trying to figure out the details. Each loop finds the first number in a sequence of n numbers such that the first is divisible by 2, the second by 3, the third by 5, … the nth number by the nth prime (for example 158 is divisible by 2, 159 by 3, 160 by 5, and 161 by 7). The particular detail I am looking for is that if its on a number, m, say 241028, and m does not start a valid sequence, does the inner loop try 241029 next or 271058?

I swear I heard a piano in this thread…
Phantom Melodies Yield Real Clues to Brain’s Workings
In 2011, a 66-year-old retired math teacher walked into a London neurological clinic hoping to get some answers. A few years earlier, she explained to the doctors, she had heard someone playing a piano outside her house. But then she realized there was no piano.
The phantom piano played longer and longer melodies, like passages from Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto number 2 in C minor, her doctors recount in a recent study in the journal Cortex. By the time the woman — to whom the doctors refer only by her first name, Sylvia — came to the clinic, the music had become her nearly constant companion. Sylvia hoped the doctors could explain to her what was going on.
[…]
79 | freetoken Thu, Feb 13, 2014 7:54:06pm |
… continuing:
It turned out that Sylvia found that music by Bach sometimes eased her hallucinations. When Dr. Kumar and his colleagues measured the effect in their lab, they found a consistent pattern: once the Bach stopped, Sylvia had several seconds of total relief from the hallucinations. Then the hallucinatory piano gradually returned, reaching full strength about a minute and a half after the Bach ended.
[…]
If the theory holds up in further research, it could explain why real music provides temporary relief for musical hallucinations: the incoming sounds reveal the brain’s prediction errors. And it may also explain why people are prone to hallucinate music, and not other familiar sounds.
[…]

Buzz Lightyear Funtime Tumbler
amazon.comDo not rotate tumbler!
I bought this item and waited for it anxiously in the mail. As avant-garde office decor, nothing beats buzz staring suggestively, posed in an unmistakably “amorous” mood, his power rod extending to true infinity and beyond. Before receiving the product, I was most perturbed by reports that the “design flaw” that indeed made this cup interesting in the first place had been “fixed.”
Fear not, though! If you’re looking to buy this cup and have the same worry that I did, your worries are unfounded: Twisting Buzz’s strong hips past their breaking point will put the straw right back into the desired position, achieving a posture in full compliance with the Feng Shui I had envisioned for my office.
Damn, but I love Amazon product reviews.

There’s no such thing as a ‘deca-Gohmert’. Nothing can be ten times dumber than Louis Gohmert. The absolute most is 6 times dumber. Anything dumber than that collapses into a wingularity so dense that not even light can escape it.

Virginia goes down:
A federal judge on Thursday evening declared that Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, in the strongest legal reversal yet of restrictive marriage amendments that exist throughout the South.
“Our Constitution declares that ‘all men’ are created equal,” wrote Judge Arenda L. Wright Allen of United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, in Norfolk. “Surely this means all of us.”
The ruling, which overturned a constitutional amendment adopted by Virginia voters in 2006 as well as previous laws, also said that Virginia must respect same-sex marriages that were carried out legally in other states.

Good morning Lizards from always sunny Philadelphia! (We have bridges for sale as well.)
Overnight weather was heavy rain, to ice, to snow. And now temps in the mid-30s. 1” of ice and 3-4” of fresh snow after the rain reduced the piles a bit.
Roads are passable, but only down to pavement on the main roads. Secondary streets are still slushy, and many are one-lane due to plowing snow piles. Lots of small ice ponds about due to snow blocking drainage.
Forecast is calling for more snow tomorrow.

Nothing like clearing out the snow just to make room for the snow coming tomorrow (2-4 inches?).
While we got some lightning and rumbles of thunder, it didn’t qualify as thundersnow for us since it happened while it was raining quite hard. Other parts of the area did see thundersnow. It’s very uncommon, and we almost had it twice this season.

Had a crazy encounter with thundersnow about 3 years ago. The fiancee (then new girlfriend) and I had gone to the movies and were walking along 34th St. during snow when the lightning just started lighting up repeatedly, like a severe thunderstorm. It really freaked me out. We were near the Empire State Building, and while I couldn’t see through the heavy snow obscuring everything in the sky, I imagine the tower was struck multiple times.

Been looking further into that wildly unexpected 9th circuit court panel ruling on Californias CCW law being overturned… I just do not expect it to stick. William had Paged it where we had a nice discussion on the legalities and implications. It’s ironic that Los Angeles has violated that very California law routinely for decades by essentially imposing “Shall Not Issue” despite an applicant in full compliance of the “good cause & good character” language. When a case works its way up from Los Angeles it could present a severe test of the policy.

Not surprised one bit that there’s that kind of crash on the PA Turnpike. Drivers there think that they are in Nascar, driving and weaving in and out of traffic, and giving other drivers the business even if they’re in the right lane driving 10-15 miles above the speed limit.
And it’s on a highway that doesn’t quite have proper shoulders and gets narrow in places.
PA drivers: worst I have encountered. The roads are almost as bad.

DC/VA/MD drivers are the worst. Some insurance carrier does a survey each year, and the DC Metro area always hits near the top 3 spots.
NYC and LA drivers are the scariest that I have encountered; they have better driving skills, but I question their judgement and choices while driving strongly.

I remember driving on I-90 in New York one night about this time of the year and the tandem-trailer Roadway trucks were passing me at 85MPH!!! Scared the crap outta me. And I love to drive and am not scared of speed. But, damn…tandem trailers??? Get one of those swinging a bit and no telling what could happen. So, I hit 90 to get out of the way. They’re widening the pike to 3-lanes each way now in a lot of places - along with the necessary overpass replacement. My pet prediction is that they finish this - and the I-99 N/S corridor roughly about the time that fuel issues start hurting the trucking industry badly enough for the transportation models based on it to start going out of style.
PA for the most part just does not have highway friendly terrain and weather. The drivers are pretty bad, but simply not as aggressive as the NJ ones are. And I concur with the VA/DC/MD thing - I saw 65mph bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-95 there while there was 4” of snow on the ground and more falling heavily at the time. Terrifyingly stupid.

That’s almost as bad as the never-ending I-86 project in NYS. Cantor is an amnesty RINO creep like Ryan, Rubio, Flake, Graham, McCain, Graham and a few others. Do all of their wives work at JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street bansk? Is this where the insider trading tips come from? Correction - Lindsey Graham has no wife at an investment bank. They all sicken me.
(Ted Cruz’s wife works for Goldman Sachs)
Cantor sets forth the program for the “conservative department” of Goldman-Sachs. Hillary sets forth the program for the “liberal department.” Ted Cruz and his wife are heading up the “tea party department.” All power to Goldman-Sachs.
And, of course, what Republican racism?
Cantor wants to displace the historical American nation with mass non-White immigration, make it into another Latin American Banana Republic. At the same time, he wants Americans to shed blood in order to preserve a Jewish majority in the Jewish ethnostate of Israel, nationalism for the Jews in Israel, while Whites are disenfranchised at home. There is only one word for this type of politician: traitor.

Yeah, and the comments are pretty much indicating that they want even more conservative outcomes - more tax cuts and incentives for the rich to solve the problems caused by stagnant wages, high education costs, and to say nothing of health care costs.
The conclusion reached in the AJC piece bears repeating, because the GOP really has a huge problem on its hands. It’s a problem of their own making.
Cantor’s problem is obvious. When your party’s fundamental political policy is that government cannot and should not help, you can’t cobble together a credible “policy agenda” on how government can help. You just wave your hands, mumble phrases and hope nobody notices.
After spending the past 20 years complaining that government is the problem and that it shouldn’t be involved in various sectors of the economy (except those that inure benefits to certain entrenched privileged folks), you can’t come back and say that the GOP has a policy that will address X, Y, or Z.
It simply isn’t credible to think that the GOP has a solution, especially on health care, when their only position is that government shouldn’t be involved and that every action has been to dismantle what government policies have been in place, or are recently enacted over their objections (except for those who still hold the GOP and conservatives accountable for their prior support for the individual mandate, but which they turned around to claim was unconstitutional once President Obama opted to make that a feature of his health care reform to get GOPers on board - and which resulted in no support at all).

Ha. They’re going to untangle Spaghetti Junction in Louisville, build a new downtown I-65 bridge, and finally build the bridge east of the city that’s been in the works for 30 years. Good rule for driving in Ohio…7+mph over is pretty safe. I’ve never been pulled over for that, as have most the people I know. Go 10 mph over and above look out. 15mph and the game is on. And believe me, it will be a game. They have small offices about 30-40 miles apart all over the state. Usually just off the freeways on another state road and a bit out of site. These projects are a bit above repair to same state. Most are widening from 4- to 6- lanes or conversion from state highway with at-grade crossings to limited access freeway and thus eligibility to be declared interstate highway. The I-99 work has also included new highway construction and bypasses since the old roads were not in good locations for widening.

UKIP
Energy, environment and climate change
UKIP are sceptical of man-made climate change and oppose the creation of wind farms and investment in other renewable energy sources.[3] In 2010, UKIP stated that they would seek to have a Royal Commission investigate whether or not climate change is man-made, to scrap wind farm subsidies, ban the showing of the global warming film An Inconvenient Truth in schools, and ban use of public money by local authorities on climate change-related efforts.[108] UKIP’s 2013 energy policy document states that global warming is part of a natural cycle: “the slight warming in the last hundred years is entirely consistent with well-established, long-term natural climate cycles”.
On Any Questions, Nigel Farage described plans to increase the use of wind energy as “loopy” and said it would lead to Britain being covered “in ugly disgusting ghastly windmills” that would not satisfactorily provide for Britain’s energy needs.
UKIP politician Christopher Monckton said that the intention of a proposed United Nations climate treaty was to “impose a communist world government”,[109] and stated that UKIP was the only option for those who disbelieve in climate change as “all the major parties have decided to sign up to the eco-fascist agenda”.

There was a group in Louisville trying to “86” I-64 along the downtown riverfront, saying that E-W traffic could be diverted onto the Watterson Expressway I-264 and Snyder Freeway I-265. They wanted to reclaim the right-of-way for non-transport use.

There’s only two seasons in NJ. Construction season and winter. You know it’s construction season when the little orange cones start showing up. You know you’re into the heart of construction season when the big orange pylons are permanently attached to the ground (along with the Jersey barriers), and then the change of the seasons to winter as they all get buried by 4 feet of snow.

There was a group in Louisville trying to “86” I-64 along the downtown riverfront, saying that E-W traffic could be diverted onto the Watterson Expressway I-264 and Snyder Freeway I-265. They wanted to reclaim the right-of-way for non-transport use.
The idea didn’t catch on.
I-95 goes N/S up the west side of the Delaware in Philadelphia pretty close to the waterfront. There seems to be a periodic push to either bury it (tunnel) or do some sort of monster by-pass in order to reclaim that property for other use, especially along the Old Town section. I don’t expect there to be much progress on those fronts due to the expense.

re: #188 Feline Fearless Leader
They’re widening the pike to 3-lanes each way now in a lot of places - along with the necessary overpass replacement. My pet prediction is that they finish this - and the I-99 N/S corridor roughly about the time that fuel issues start hurting the trucking industry badly enough for the transportation models based on it to start going out of style.
You’re going to see a whole lot more (and there is already a lot) of what is called “Intermodial” where truck vans go long distance on train and then short distance to delivery/warehouse by truck. Much more fuel efficent than long haul trucking. We’ll end up needing more/better/faster rail from cargo which will then make it more desirable for passenger service again.
I’d rather spend a couple of days of my vacation travelling comfortably by rail than in sardine class in Cheapo Airlines after having been molested by the TSA. I imagine I’m not alone in that feeling.

Except that the ever-increasing volume of traffic isn’t exactly happening. Traffic agencies have been horrible at estimating traffic volumes for years. We’re seeing a change in habits and people aren’t driving nearly as much.
We’re making more and more expanses in need of repavement. While we are still running behind on repairing and replacing the existing bridges we already have. And don’t get me started on the areas with rail and railroad bridges that also need replaced and/or upgraded to handle heavier railcars.
(Yes, I worked transportation apps for 17 years. Still have too much stuff related to railcars, trucks, packaging, and freight rates stuck in my brain.)

On Tuesday, the Kansas House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a measure designed to bring anti-gay segregation—under the guise of “religious liberty”—to the already deep-red state. The bill, written out of fear that the state may soon face an Oklahoma-style gay marriage ruling, will now easily pass the Republican Senate and be signed into law by the Republican governor. The result will mark Kansas as the first state, though certainly not the last, to legalize segregation of gay and straight people in virtually every arena of life

The Van Dalsem Quilt

“Barefoot and pregnant” is a figure of speech most commonly associated with the controversial idea that women should not work outside the home and should have many children during their reproductive years. It has several other meanings as well.
The phrase “barefoot and pregnant” was probably first used sometime before 1950. An article from 1949 states, “By early 1949, TWA was—in the words of its new president, Ralph S. Damon—both ‘barefoot and pregnant.’”[1] Its usage may date as early as the 1910s. An article published in 1958 states the phrase was first used by a “Dr. Hertzler” 40 years earlier. “Some forty years ago, Dr. Hertzler advanced a hypothesis which young women of today seem bent on proving correct. ‘The only way to keep a woman happy,’ he said, ‘is to keep her barefoot and pregnant.’”[2]
The variation “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” has been associated with the phrase “Kinder, Küche, Kirche” (translated “children, kitchen, church”), used under the German Empire to describe a woman’s role in society. In Asian society, the equivalent phrase is, “Good Wife, Wise Mother” (originally popularized in Meiji Japan).[citation needed]

Quite true. Amtrak often shares ROW with freight traffic, and freight has priority. So, delays in freight translate into big delays for passenger service. here in China, there are different classes of trains. The slowest ones stop at every wide spot along the way, and have to yield to freight and express trains. There are express trains (which oddly cost the same) that move marginally faster, because they have ROW over the freight and local passenger traffic. Aside from the new high speed rail service, there is also direct service between major cities — no stops along the way at all.
Here’s an example. The direct express from Changsha to Beijing takes 13 hours overnight. The “local” takes more like 23 hours.

That happens around Columbus all the time now too. Damn metro area is grow so fast the highways can’t keep up. There has been talk of building an outer-outer belt. Heck 1-270 already is 60+ miles all the way around. AN outer-outer belt would be 200! The metro area is now 5 counties.
We are swamping Cleveland and Cincinnati. Not complaining though, a great city with lots of tech, insurance, state government, military, shipping and warehousing, etc, etc. Lots of start up companies all the time popping up due to all the research in the area due to Federal Government, Ohio State University, OCLC (Online Computer Learning Center) Battelle Memorial Research and other think-tanks all tied together coming up with stuff and spinning off companies. Columbus really started to grow about 1970 and it doesn’t seem to be letting up.
I hope to tap into some of that for my design work, as I’ve always enjoyed having my strengths in technology and mechanical areas.

Cruz and Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee introduced a bill on Wednesday “to amend chapter 1 of title 1, United States Code, with regard to the definition of ‘marriage’ and ‘spouse’ for Federal purposes.”
Though its text is not yet available, the measure is widely considered to be the Senate companion of the State Marriage Defense Act, introduced last month in the House by Republican Rep. Randy Weber of Texas

So they intend to change the definition of those terms so that the Federal definition and those used by states and other localities are different? That’s insanely stupid, but not unexpected given this kneejerk opposition to progress regarding individual rights.
I wonder how many people are out there saying, “Crap. We should have pushed that civil union thing while we had the chance!”

On Tuesday, the Kansas House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a measure designed to bring anti-negro segregation—under the guise of “ethnic liberty“—to the already deep-red state. The bill, written out of fear that the state may soon face an Oklahoma-style desegregation ruling, will now easily pass the Republican Senate and be signed into law by the Republican governor. The result will mark Kansas as the first state, though certainly not the last, to legalize segregation of black and white people in virtually every arena of life.

Note to all: Routine maintenance on part of the ‘hub’ will put healthcare.gov in a mode that doesn’t permit full service from 1500 hrs Sat to early Tuesday. Fraternity hazing death declared a homicide. This links back to a case from December where a 19-year-old attending Baruch College died after taking part in a hazing event at a retreat up in the Poconos.
Rampantly stupid. And suspending the group after the fact will not bring the young man back. And expect a number of other young men to have their lives wrecked since they took part in the event and the ensuing attempted cover-up.
A very expensive combination of immaturity, group think, and abuse of power. Another black eye for the fraternity system, and self-inflicted like most of them are.

Stop the bullying—at all levels.
Wells report: Richie Incognito, John Jerry, Pouncey harassed Martin
“When Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin left the team in November because he said he was being bullied by guard Richie Incognito, the NFL appointed big-name attorney Ted Wells to run an independent investigation into the team.
“On Friday, that report was released, and it concluded that Incognito, guard John Jerry and center Mike Pouncey “engaged in a pattern of harassment directed” at Martin and another young offensive lineman who wasn’t named and an assistant trainer.
“Writes Wells’ team: “We find that the Assistant Trainer repeatedly was targeted with racial slurs and other racially derogatory language. Player A frequently was subjected to homophobic name-calling and improper physical touching. Martin was taunted on a persistent basis with sexually explicit remarks about his sister and his mother and at times ridiculed with racial insults and other offensive comments.”
And this wasn’t simply “bullying”, either. It was racism, sexism and homophobia at the worst levels.

Just got a corporate email saying that jeans are now appropriate to wear every day not just “Casual Friday.”
Formal business attire is still required for executive meetings, interviewing job applicants, and meetings with external suppliers and dealers.
As more and more of the corporate workforce becomes composed of the younger generation, I expect the dress codes to experience a gradual relaxing across the board. My workplace is already “business casual” for all non-customer-facing personnel. Jeans and polos, you can wear tees as long as they don’t have logos.

Glenn could dispute all of those claims with an approx. number.
His silence makes me believe that the NSA sources gave a pretty close number.
3 outcomes:
1.) Glenn says that the NSA reported number is too low which would start an internal frenzy to find more possible compromised files = Happy Glenn
2.) Glenn says the the NSA reported number is too high thus making his meal ticket look less like an indiscriminate hoover and giving Greenwald massive fodder for the NSA over hyping everything which fits with his descriptive MO of the organization = Happy Glenn
3.) NSA reported number is close to being right = Pissy current Glenn

The thing is, that Comcast IS engaging in throttling and surcharge practices toward people who are paying premium amounts for higher bandwidth rates. In some areas, they have a 300GB monthly cap on users with 50mb/sec and 100mb/sec service, and any overage adds $10 per 50gb. Note this cap is for all data transfers, meaning total of upload and downloaded data.
To give you an idea of what this entails, a typical High Definition (1080p) streamed movie requires roughly 8gb of bandwidth, and nowadays, the vast majority of console and PC software is delivered via digital transfer, versus via CD/DVD, and cloud-based computing and backup services are rapidly expanding = as an example, Google Fiber service provides 1TB of cloud-based storage as part of their package.

I don’t like the merger but it’s not an end of the world thing. There’ll be plenty more mergers to come before we reach the end of the rope. I do find the journalism side interesting in how it effects editorial comments from journalists effected by the merger. I don’t know if Comcast would actually prohibit a show from criticizing the deal but I would guess the pundits would tread lightly. For a scripted show they might send the script to management for approval before airing. They certainly wouldn’t go totally nuts with criticism like they were talking about Rupert Murdoch or Koch bros.

You do not have a constitutional right to a tax exemption or nonprofit status. The IRS has administrative authority to enforce the tax code of the US. It can and does request information to make sure that entities are conforming to the IRC, including whether a given entity is qualified to be treated as a nonprofit or is entitled to a tax exemption.

Debt to skyrocket: pic.twitter.com/GSpPnLm6Ca— Heritage Foundation (@Heritage) February 14, 2014
Heritage posts graphs without a sense of irony.
They’re busy complaining/warning that debt will exceed GDP by 2028 and then continue into the stratosphere.
What are they missing from that equation. Oh yeah, the fact that the tax policy they’ve championed has been a big part of it. Despite high tax rates after WWII, US economic growth was unparalleled, and it brought down the deficit. Who expanded the deficit by percentage terms in a non war scenario? That’d be Reagan, who octupled the deficit of Carter. Bush tripled the deficit on his watch, but somehow Heritage ignores all that to focus on the so-called death spiral that doesn’t take into account any changes to tax policy that might rationalize things and improve the economy at the same time.

I checked again to see if Think Progress or any on the other Center for American Progress sites are speaking about the Comcast merger. Not a peep so far. Sure enough Comcast and Verizon are on their donator lists. John Podesta is now White house staff. Haven’t seen any reports of MSNBC covering it either. This is why we can’t have nice things.
I have heard both Chris Hayes and Alex Wagner mention it in regards to the buyout of Time Warner.

If you look closely at that chart, you will notice that the two periods of sustained debt increase were during the Reagan & George HW Bush Presidencies (1981-1993) and George W Bush (2001-2009). Their biggest boogeyman, Jimmy Carter did a remarkable job of keeping debt in check during some rather tough economic times, and Clinton presided over the biggest economic expansion (while simultaneously lowering debt) in modern history. GWB left the economy in tatters, a situation that took Obama nearly four years to begin to reverse, even though he has to deal with an outlandish amount of obstructionism from Republicans.
