The UK’s survived without being controlled by anyone in France for 800 years, and independent of any German control for 180…now they’re supposed to become just a state (in the US sense of the term) of Europe because all three mainstream parties favor it?

I think the UK was wise to stay out of the EU. The problem is that opposition to EU attracts nationalists who can often bring with them some pretty ugly baggage. There’s nothing wrong with opposition to joining the EU but be wary of goose stepping nationalists.

“The Europeans and Americans, who haven’t put up a penny yet, have the diplomatic advantage in Kiev…. And we’re standing there looking like idiots,” Mr. Strokan says.

Russia is trying to put together some kind of “free trade zone” (I forget the term they are using) of former soviet properties. Of course all the taxes and duties will go to Russia. So I don’t think they’re interested in annexing countries entirely. There was a curious line at the end of the CSM article I didn’t really understand….

“Lavrov’s article can be seen as a last appeal to the West, to convince them to come to their senses and stop moving these dividing lines eastward across the face of Europe,” says Vladimir Zharikhin, deputy director of the Kremlin-funded Institute of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Moscow.

Eventually, he argues, Moscow may feel it has no alternative but to ally politically and military with China. “It’s not where we want to be, not part of our thinking right now, but we could be made to feel like there’s no other choice,” he says.

I don’t really know what that’s supposed to mean but I suspect the Chinese aren’t going to be very interested. China wants to manufacture and sell to the West, Russia just wants to run a protection racket or small weak countries. China doesn’t need them.

I wrote some python code for this sequence a couple of weeks ago on a whim. My first iteration was slow because it went up one digit at a time to check. I then realized that I could go up by a larger amount, and i went from finding 10 numbers in the sequence in four days to finding 2200 in about four hours. I was trying to find how the presented code jumped to the next value.

Good morning Lizards from always sunny Philadelphia! (We have bridges for sale as well.)

Overnight weather was heavy rain, to ice, to snow. And now temps in the mid-30s. 1” of ice and 3-4” of fresh snow after the rain reduced the piles a bit.

Roads are passable, but only down to pavement on the main roads. Secondary streets are still slushy, and many are one-lane due to plowing snow piles. Lots of small ice ponds about due to snow blocking drainage.

Forecast is calling for more snow tomorrow.

I feel your pain. Now that I have Win7 working after upgrading from Vista Home, I’ve disabled auto-update. While I appreciate M$’s concern that my system always be up-to-date, I’d rather do the job myself.

Greets and saluts from the snow encrusted NYC metro area. Makes for some real pretty sights, but it’s a [deleted] pain to clear away the heavy dense snow that fell in round two last night.


Nothing like clearing out the snow just to make room for the snow coming tomorrow (2-4 inches?).

While we got some lightning and rumbles of thunder, it didn’t qualify as thundersnow for us since it happened while it was raining quite hard. Other parts of the area did see thundersnow. It’s very uncommon, and we almost had it twice this season.

Had a crazy encounter with thundersnow about 3 years ago. The fiancee (then new girlfriend) and I had gone to the movies and were walking along 34th St. during snow when the lightning just started lighting up repeatedly, like a severe thunderstorm. It really freaked me out. We were near the Empire State Building, and while I couldn’t see through the heavy snow obscuring everything in the sky, I imagine the tower was struck multiple times.

Not surprised one bit that there’s that kind of crash on the PA Turnpike. Drivers there think that they are in Nascar, driving and weaving in and out of traffic, and giving other drivers the business even if they’re in the right lane driving 10-15 miles above the speed limit.

And it’s on a highway that doesn’t quite have proper shoulders and gets narrow in places.

PA drivers: worst I have encountered. The roads are almost as bad.

I remember driving on I-90 in New York one night about this time of the year and the tandem-trailer Roadway trucks were passing me at 85MPH!!! Scared the crap outta me. And I love to drive and am not scared of speed. But, damn…tandem trailers??? Get one of those swinging a bit and no telling what could happen. So, I hit 90 to get out of the way. Unlike Ohio, I don’t think I saw a state trooper all the way from Erie PA to Rochester, my destination.

They’re widening the pike to 3-lanes each way now in a lot of places - along with the necessary overpass replacement. My pet prediction is that they finish this - and the I-99 N/S corridor roughly about the time that fuel issues start hurting the trucking industry badly enough for the transportation models based on it to start going out of style.

PA for the most part just does not have highway friendly terrain and weather. The drivers are pretty bad, but simply not as aggressive as the NJ ones are. And I concur with the VA/DC/MD thing - I saw 65mph bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-95 there while there was 4” of snow on the ground and more falling heavily at the time. Terrifyingly stupid.

Cantor’s problem is obvious. When your party’s fundamental political policy is that government cannot and should not help, you can’t cobble together a credible “policy agenda” on how government can help. You just wave your hands, mumble phrases and hope nobody notices.

After spending the past 20 years complaining that government is the problem and that it shouldn’t be involved in various sectors of the economy (except those that inure benefits to certain entrenched privileged folks), you can’t come back and say that the GOP has a policy that will address X, Y, or Z.

Ha. They’re going to untangle Spaghetti Junction in Louisville, build a new downtown I-65 bridge, and finally build the bridge east of the city that’s been in the works for 30 years. A related project is to make most of the surface streets two-way again, after having one-way traffic for at least four decades.

Driving in downtown Louisville will be a nightmare for the next several years.

Good rule for driving in Ohio…7+mph over is pretty safe. I’ve never been pulled over for that, as have most the people I know. Go 10 mph over and above look out. 15mph and the game is on. And believe me, it will be a game. They have small offices about 30-40 miles apart all over the state. Usually just off the freeways on another state road and a bit out of site. But they make a call, and they look for you coming.

The I-99 work has also included new highway construction and bypasses since the old roads were not in good locations for widening.

Was out with a friend and the man at the next table blurts, “Edward Snowden is a hero!” Surprised my friend with the sound of my fork hitting my plate, then I remembered I wasn’t online and speaking in ALL CAPS probably wasn’t a good idea, so I sipped my beer, smiled, and continued our conversation.

Snowden fan was a cute little old hippy with a bald topped grey mullet of hair and a beard like ZZ Top and he was wearing Birkenstocks. I didn’t mind most of his other political talk - he was actually quite progressive. But seriously misinformed on Snowden - but that comes out of the ‘don’t trust government’ school of thought I suppose.

I-95 goes N/S up the west side of the Delaware in Philadelphia pretty close to the waterfront. There seems to be a periodic push to either bury it (tunnel) or do some sort of monster by-pass in order to reclaim that property for other use, especially along the Old Town section. I don’t expect there to be much progress on those fronts due to the expense.

They’re widening the pike to 3-lanes each way now in a lot of places - along with the necessary overpass replacement. My pet prediction is that they finish this - and the I-99 N/S corridor roughly about the time that fuel issues start hurting the trucking industry badly enough for the transportation models based on it to start going out of style.

You’re going to see a whole lot more (and there is already a lot) of what is called “Intermodial” where truck vans go long distance on train and then short distance to delivery/warehouse by truck. Much more fuel efficent than long haul trucking. We’ll end up needing more/better/faster rail from cargo which will then make it more desirable for passenger service again.

I’d rather spend a couple of days of my vacation travelling comfortably by rail than in sardine class in Cheapo Airlines after having been molested by the TSA. I imagine I’m not alone in that feeling.

I-95 goes N/S up the west side of the Delaware in Philadelphia pretty close to the waterfront. There seems to be a periodic push to either bury it (tunnel) or do some sort of monster by-pass in order to reclaim that property for other use, especially along the Old Town section. I don’t expect there to be much progress on those fronts due to the expense.

Except that the ever-increasing volume of traffic isn’t exactly happening. Traffic agencies have been horrible at estimating traffic volumes for years. We’re seeing a change in habits and people aren’t driving nearly as much.

We’re making more and more expanses in need of repavement. While we are still running behind on repairing and replacing the existing bridges we already have. And don’t get me started on the areas with rail and railroad bridges that also need replaced and/or upgraded to handle heavier railcars.

(Yes, I worked transportation apps for 17 years. Still have too much stuff related to railcars, trucks, packaging, and freight rates stuck in my brain.)

IIRC it originates in NOLA or points west. Good bet that guy’s old right-of-way had something to do with the routing.

Favorite local rail is now a rails-to-trails running from Tallahassee to Saint Mark’s FL. It started as a mule-drawn wooden rail route. Delightful day’s

Quite true. Amtrak often shares ROW with freight traffic, and freight has priority. So, delays in freight translate into big delays for passenger service. here in China, there are different classes of trains. The slowest ones stop at every wide spot along the way, and have to yield to freight and express trains. There are express trains (which oddly cost the same) that move marginally faster, because they have ROW over the freight and local passenger traffic. Aside from the new high speed rail service, there is also direct service between major cities — no stops along the way at all.

Here’s an example. The direct express from Changsha to Beijing takes 13 hours overnight. The “local” takes more like 23 hours.

That happens around Columbus all the time now too. Damn metro area is grow so fast the highways can’t keep up. There has been talk of building an outer-outer belt. Heck 1-270 already is 60+ miles all the way around. AN outer-outer belt would be 200! The metro area is now 5 counties.

We are swamping Cleveland and Cincinnati. Not complaining though, a great city with lots of tech, insurance, state government, military, shipping and warehousing, etc, etc. Lots of start up companies all the time popping up due to all the research in the area due to Federal Government, Ohio State University, OCLC (Online Computer Learning Center) Battelle Memorial Research and other think-tanks all tied together coming up with stuff and spinning off companies. Columbus really started to grow about 1970 and it doesn’t seem to be letting up.

I hope to tap into some of that for my design work, as I’ve always enjoyed having my strengths in technology and mechanical areas.

It’s 40F here at the moment here in eastern Kentucky and the NWS just issued a Winter Storm Warning until 2 a.m., calling for 3-5 inches of snow with wind gusts up to 25 mph.

My road is a complete disaster. It hasn’t seen a plow at all, so all of the snow and sleet that’s been collecting since January is now solid ice several inches thick.
Good thing a friend came to my rescue and drove me into the village yesterday to stock up on supplies, then he went to the city in the next county to pick up an adequate supply of adult beverages.
He also replenished my stack of firewood on the front porch and hauled over a bale of hay.
By Tuesday temp should be near 50 and by Wednesday it’s supposed to be above 60F.
I am so tired of this…

I once had occasion to take the train from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. But something had happened on the tracks in between, so they divided the ticket holders into those who would go by bus and those who would take another train. Turns out I should have gone by bus, but I took a train to DC and then to Pittsburgh. Went through states I otherwise haven’t seen. And you know the view from the train is always the most flattering. /

There is a provision to lock in your intent to choose an insurance provider and still meet the 15 Feb turnaround to have March insurance. Check locally on this.

Formal business attire is still required for executive meetings, interviewing job applicants, and meetings with external suppliers and dealers.

As more and more of the corporate workforce becomes composed of the younger generation, I expect the dress codes to experience a gradual relaxing across the board. My workplace is already “business casual” for all non-customer-facing personnel. Jeans and polos, you can wear tees as long as they don’t have logos.

The thing is, that Comcast IS engaging in throttling and surcharge practices toward people who are paying premium amounts for higher bandwidth rates. In some areas, they have a 300GB monthly cap on users with 50mb/sec and 100mb/sec service, and any overage adds $10 per 50gb. Note this cap is for all data transfers, meaning total of upload and downloaded data.

To give you an idea of what this entails, a typical High Definition (1080p) streamed movie requires roughly 8gb of bandwidth, and nowadays, the vast majority of console and PC software is delivered via digital transfer, versus via CD/DVD, and cloud-based computing and backup services are rapidly expanding = as an example, Google Fiber service provides 1TB of cloud-based storage as part of their package.

I don’t like the merger but it’s not an end of the world thing. There’ll be plenty more mergers to come before we reach the end of the rope. I do find the journalism side interesting in how it effects editorial comments from journalists effected by the merger. I don’t know if Comcast would actually prohibit a show from criticizing the deal but I would guess the pundits would tread lightly. For a scripted show they might send the script to management for approval before airing. They certainly wouldn’t go totally nuts with criticism like they were talking about Rupert Murdoch or Koch bros.

You do not have a constitutional right to a tax exemption or nonprofit status. The IRS has administrative authority to enforce the tax code of the US. It can and does request information to make sure that entities are conforming to the IRC, including whether a given entity is qualified to be treated as a nonprofit or is entitled to a tax exemption.

If you look closely at that chart, you will notice that the two periods of sustained debt increase were during the Reagan & George HW Bush Presidencies (1981-1993) and George W Bush (2001-2009). Their biggest boogeyman, Jimmy Carter did a remarkable job of keeping debt in check during some rather tough economic times, and Clinton presided over the biggest economic expansion (while simultaneously lowering debt) in modern history. GWB left the economy in tatters, a situation that took Obama nearly four years to begin to reverse, even though he has to deal with an outlandish amount of obstructionism from Republicans.
