Obama is in pretty friendly territory tonight. I’m thinking he felt safe enough to go up to some white dude on the side of the street in Denver in a horse mask and engage (which is why Secret Service are like “Fuck, 200% DEFCON7 Alert” in the picture). In the end the internet got a funny picture and life goes on.

To go with the enchilada casserole that is dinner tonight (currently cooling in the fridge before it goes into the oven, because the husband has not left the office yet and I am a kind and benevolent wife), I’m trying a new cucumber salad.

Diced cucumber, red onion, salt, lime juice, tequila, and a little bit of garlic powder and cumin. Tossed in just a tiny bit of feta. My first tastes were that it’s pretty good, I’m looking forward to trying it with the meal.

Oh, yum. That sounds outstanding. Don’t skimp on the feta. That and unflavored yogurt are outstanding with cucumbers and red onions, (also, try a little curry).

I will probably add more to mine, but not sure how much the husband wants so I figured that could be an individual thing. :)

I will have to consider maybe just a bit of yogurt next time (for some creaminess).

Things are going good for me right now, except I am not making enough money, and am spending to much on gas.

I am now aiming to rectify that, though the whole process or sifting through job openings, and the 10-page process of applying to things is daunting to me. Too much stimuli!!!!

But, I must try.

Also, my Dad is using his passport for the first time this month, going to Montreal. I may be needing one, but the nation I would be going to is farther out than that.

I also might be missing the part of my brain that accurately calculates risk. :P

The spreadsheet shows 7,485 email addresses listed as monitored between 2002 and 2008. Many of the email addresses on the list appear to belong to foreigners whom the government believes are linked to Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah. Among the Americans on the list are individuals long accused of terrorist activity, including Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, who were killed in a 2011 drone strike in Yemen.

Last paragraph.

In 2003, the Al Haramain Islamic Foundation, a Saudi charity, hired Ghafoor after its U.S. assets were frozen by the Treasury Department over claims that it funded terrorist operations. The government alleged that there were “direct links” between the U.S. branch of the charity and Osama bin Laden. Al Haramain had previously been represented by some of the biggest and most prestigious American law firms, including the D.C. powerhouse Akin Gump. Ghafoor’s work with Al Haramain led him to other controversial clients, including Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, a brother-in-law of Osama bin Laden who was the subject of FBI and CIA surveillance for years, as well as the government of Sudan.

Generally, government investigators are required to obtain search warrants signed by judges to eavesdrop on domestic phone calls, e-mail traffic and other electronic communications. But Bush authorized the surveillance program shortly after 9/11, allowing the National Security Agency to bypass the courts and intercept electronic communications believed connected to al-Qaida.

Bush ended the program in January 2007.

Looking through the names on Wikipedia

Nihad Awad- Has made friendly statements on Hamas, and towards Qaddafi. Qaddafi was behind 2 terror attacks against the US (Berlin Discotheque Bombing, and Pan Am 103)

Agha Saeed- Not much, but he made a remark serious enough about Palestinians to cause Hillary Clinton to refund a $50,000 donation from his organization

Hooshang Amirahmadi- This one stumps me. An Iranian-American who wants reconciliation between Iran and the US. In addition, quite a liberal fellow.

Asim Ghafoor- Lawyer for the al-Haramain Foundation, an organization banned by the UN as a terrorist group.

Faisal Gill- Worked in the American Muslim Association under Abdurahman Alamoudi, who was convicted in 2003 of smuggling in $1 million from Libya to the US. Has links to Asim Ghafoor.

I only see a problem with Amirahmadi being looked at. Saeed is a bit questionable though.

The Secret Service is all about threat level. Perimeter control is paramount. I guarantee that man had to remove his Democratic Donkey Head before he was admitted inside the control zone. There is a reason why it’s funny. Nothing was going to happen, or he wouldn’t have been there.

I’m expecting more scenes like that in the coming days. Brazil has had a ton of demonstrations and controversy over the money they’ve spent on the World Cup at the expense of internal problems in the country.

All they got for it was the loss of their two best players, a trip to the semis, and a 7-1 curbstomping by the Germans. I’m expecting their media and fans to be angry for a good while.

Greenwald touts that the NSA and FBI had wide latitude in carrying out surveillance against … wait for it… suspects, including Americans who were long believed to be working with/for terror groups.

He’s going on about how programs that ended in 2008. Collection status - terminated 02/01/2008 through 02/08/2008. In other words, the collection of data on those individuals ended under those former programs.

This is what Greenwald thinks is a blockbuster?

168 lawhawk  Jul 9, 2014 6:11:06am
Current and former law enforcement officials reject that analogy, and say that the FISA process is too rigorous to permit any abuse. Still, several acknowledge that political speech is sometimes viewed as a sufficient reason to launch an investigation that can culminate in full-blown surveillance.

In other words, despite Greenwald’s claims of a lax environment and NSA doing everything to hoover up every bit of data on everyone, the agency does nothing of the sort. It’s possible that an investigation that can result in someone getting on to the surveillance dashboard, but that’s because their words and deeds are putting them on it.

Where there is an issue is that speech alone shouldn’t be the factor - there should be more (steps in furtherance of financing terror or carrying out attacks or similar). Political speech is protected speech, but when you start talking of overthrowing the government, or sending funds to terror groups or making steps to join with terror groups, then the NSA surveillance is warranted.

Only 4 small appliances on the counter here, not counting microwave; the 5 others stay in the cupboard. I am pressed for counter space, but it’s a cozy, compact Pullman type kitchen, about 3 ft width of “free” space between cupboards, so not stressful otherwise—everything is within easy reach and I like it. Now, I’m wondering, though, where I’m going to put my dining room table and chairs in the apt downstairs. There’s a 3 BR, 2B house on the property here, but they’re not moving—that’s what we really wanted. Yeah, but that was probably under the command of Rudy Giuliani. And, at the time he could do nothing wrong. If he personally grabbed a dark-skinned and bearded guy off the street and pummeled him on camera, large segments of America would have cheered.

Actually, not much has really changed has it?

I’m supposed to be impressed that Greenwald interviewed people who were previously under investigation by FBI, NSA, or other agencies (including the NYPD who carried out a wide-ranging surveillance of Muslims in the NYC metro area because they didn’t trust the feds to share intel on a timely basis via the JTTF).

What are those people going to say? That it was warranted?

SCHROOMS!!!!

The news: Magic mushrooms don’t just make you see the sound of a distant airplane ripple across your living room wall. They also calm the ego and boost your sense of optimism, according to a new study.

So how does a psychedelic mushroom actually change your brain? It sounds crazy, but shrooms’ mind-altering compound (psilocybin) helps unlock mental states that are normally only active when we sleep, inducing a state of wakeful dreaming with which many users should be more than familiar.

The more mind-blowing part, though, is not how the drug amplifies some sections of the brain, but how it mutes others. When the emotional centers of the brain light up with activity, the action in the regions responsible for higher-level thinking and our sense of self, or ego, become hushed.

The drug’s long-term effects seem far more pleasant than the terrifying, mind-bending trips that can be brought on by too high a dose.

I think it’s odd that the left doesn’t think of Stewart as a traitor.

It’s one thing to represent the oppressed, but not only to be sympathetic to, but collude, with criminals like that is reprehensible for a member of the bar sworn to uphold the Constitution—all of it.

If you think back to the Bush era of Stewart’s case many were embracing radical ideas and heroes in response to having a Republican in the White house at a time of crisis. People did a lot of stupid things. 9-11 truth, Ward Churchill, George Galloway, Robert Fisk, volunteering as a human shield for Saddam, questioning the timing behind every terror attack, etc. A lot of people were nutty back then and they weren’t cured. They’ll be nutty again in the near future.

“Wakeful dreaming” will get you into auto accidents. I know when I’m “day dreaming” while driving, even briefly, it’s pretty scary not to remember that I just passed the road I live on. It’s called “not paying attention” and that can be fatal.

ZOMG WHY WON’T OBUMMER DO ANYTHING ABOUT TEH BORDER?

Obama Asks for $3.7 Billion to Aid Border

President Obama urged Congress on Tuesday to quickly provide almost $4 billion to confront a surge of young migrants from Central America crossing the border into Texas, calling it “an urgent humanitarian situation.”

But the request quickly became entangled in the fierce political debate over immigration: Republicans said they were wary of Mr. Obama’s request and could not immediately support it, given what they called his administration’s failure to secure the Mexican border after years of illegal crossings. Mr. Obama could face resistance from members of his own party as well.

You mean other than from the likes of Geller and Co? Nope.

The NYPD’s new efforts on community outreach may do more to gain intel and trust among local community leaders and folks than the surveillance and stop and frisk ever did.

Shootings are down, murders are down, and stop and frisk is down significantly. That’s despite what naysayers were claiming would have happened. Effective policing is what gets results and with a recent spike in shootings as the weather warmed, the NYPD sent more cops on the street from behind desks. Combined with compustat and other methods, they can focus on areas where there are outbreaks of shootings.

That made it so it was unlisted in the r/IAmA subreddit, but still could be accessed if you knew the URL. He then tweeted a link to it on his Twitter feed. This is pure, unmitigated horse hockey because it’s not “information”, or at least facts, it’s GG & Co’s interpretation of them. And we’re to believe that the pipsqueak Snowden is really directing the release of this obfuscated, deceiving, and false junk?

“Do you worry that the amount of information that has been released overwhelms the public? I read everything that is published and I find it overwhelming at times. When I talk to family and friends about the stories I often see their eyes glaze over”

GG:
“This is one reason I think we were right to space out the stories rather than just putting everything out there at once.

“Aside from the fact that our source, Edward Snowden, insisted that we report the stories one by one, I think this method has proven to be the best for public consumption.

“I’ve been amazed at how long the interest level in this story has been sustained, and how intense it has been all over the world, literally.”

Face it, GG, you’ve been too busy trying to line your pockets with your POS book (started, of course, before your savior, Pierre, came along), and not doing real journalism, but drive-by bullshit.

What “stories”? The ones you’re making up as you go along? Or is it just one big, old bloated-with-your ego “story”?

Am I the only person left on the planet with a whistling tea kettle? I do use it to make tea but also to water my inside plants. : )

It’s a deal for a decent house around here and I’m not moving elsewhere because I have really good landlord/landlady and I like the location, safe and clean.

First world problems once again. : )

I have a whistling tea kettle! I guess I bought it to remind me of my childhood. My mom always used it to heat water for instant coffee or for tea. She used a percolator for coffee.

I would bet my kitchen is smaller than yours. I’m too lazy to take a tape measure to it now, but I’ve got less than 3 ft of counter space for sure. I store some stuff on top of the fridge.

Cooking equipment: two burner gas cookstove, running off bottled LP, cold water sink, fridge, microwave (on top of fridge), wok, small fry pan, couple of sauce pans, stock pot with steamer insert, rice cooker, slow cooker. The last two are outside the kitchen for space reasons. For coffee, I use a French press. For instant, I can use the hot water from the drinking water dispenser in the living room.

Despite the limitations, I’ve had up to 12 people over for dinner. My students include some excellent cooks, who are adept at dealing with limited space and equipment. I can manage OK, too.

Go to the last page for the requirements. If you have a passport that’s all you need.

If you have a drivers licence and a social security card, that is all you need.

If not, you need the drivers license and the birth cert.

Very good! My kitchen is fully equipped with a reg size fridge and stove, so you’re doing very well! I just don’t have a lot of prep room, either, so have learned to economize w/it. For me, it’s going to be a matter of getting a table about half as large and people eating in the LR, too. Although even now, that happens and I don’t mind if they don’t. My last crowd was over a dozen, too, after my son’s funeral (I had prepped everything before hand, which was a cold spread and in the fridge). It was mostly family, though. Some of his friends in Charlotte actually had to go back to work and couldn’t come up.

“Article 13 of Indiana’s 1851 Constitution stated “No Negro or Mulatto shall come into, or settle in, the State, after the adoption of this Constitution.” The 1848 Constitution of Illinois led to one of the harshest Black Code systems in the nation until the Civil War. The Illinois Black Code of 1853 extended a complete prohibition against black immigration into the state.”

It makes you wonder if these people ever held down a job, and if they did, ever got sick. Anyone worker with half a brain knows how employer provided health insurance works. You have to pick a plan. You agree to have money deducted from your pay to cover premiums. You end up paying co-pays out of pocket.

Challenge them on this point, because if they have been employed, either they got shit benefits (or none at all), or they’re speaking out of total ignorance of how the world works.

In fact, what the Hobby Lobby is going to make happen is the government to provide what the company is denying.

This is what the general ‘conservative’ mindset overlooks: People in need remain in need if you deny them that need. People who need birth control, people who need housing, food, jobs, they don’t just disappear if you don’t address their needs. One way or another, it has to get addressed.

They also overlook the old saw, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” They whine about all the money spent on social programs, without stopping to calculate what future problems those programs might prevent.

I would argue this same mindset has infected American corporate culture for decades.

Well, good news for my feline overlord with the intestinal blockage. They operated on him yesterday and removed the hair ball and he is apparently recovering quickly from the surgery. Might pick him up tonight.

Glad to here that the Feline Overlord is recovering.

One of my Siamese once had the lethargic “sick kitty” look and I took him to a clinic on the weekend since the regular vet was closed. Turned out that he’d been outside and eaten a load of dry grass (it was winter). He didn’t immediately hack it up like they usually do - so it got into his gut, absorbed water, and expanded his gut to the point it shoved a bunch of internal organs to the side. (It was an interesting x-ray.)

No operation - the vet at the clinic gave him an enema. Which cleared him out over the next couple of hours and he was back to normal within 24 hours.

And the vet also told me the cat had asthma. (Undiagnosed by the regular vet - and I took the hacking attacks for being hairballs.) So the cat became a seasonal consumer of small amounts of prednisone.

St. Rand of the Church of Galt told them in the sacred scripture Atlas Shrugged that every exceptional person can be a captain of industry and obscenely wealthy, but liberals are holding them down. None of the faithful ever question how, if everybody is equally capable of being one of the elite, there will be anybody to do the menial jobs. Because if they did, they’d have to acknowledge that they’re not the exceptional people that Ayn talked about, they’re the very “parasites” she raged against.

A nation doesn’t have morals any more than a corporation does.

It depends on the morals of the individual leaders and citizens of the nation in question. A leader can try to make a nation (or corporation) act like a moral individual would. And moral citizens can pressure the nation (or corporations) to act that way via the choices and actions they are legally allowed to take - voting, where they purchase things, and being activists.

Iowa GOPer: ‘Dictator’ Obama’s ‘Impeachment’ Should Be An Option

God, this sort of rhetoric pisses me off. NO ONE in this country knows what it’s like to live under a dictator unless they defected from or fled an actual tyranny.

I work with a couple of guys who each have more wingnut bumper stickers than teeth (all the Obama-is-Hitler, don’t-tread-on-me, etc bullshit you’re used to seeing), and I also have other co-workers who came from cheerful places including Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iran, Cuba, and El Salvador, all of whom presumably know a little something about what it’s like to live in a real dictatorship. Luckily, there’s a fairly well-observed unwritten rule against talking religion and politics at work, but I would really enjoy hearing the wingnuts explain to the rest of the office how life under the current incarnation of the US government is comparable to life under the Soviets, Castro, Pol Pot, the Mullahs, and whatever military junta-of-the-week. I’m sure it would prove very enlightening.

I’ve now been to both Kings Canyon and Yosemite, and there’s something to be said for going in off-peak periods. Fewer crowds. Kings Canyon doesn’t get the crowds of Yosemite, even during peak periods, so I can see why that’d be a better choice.

When we visited Sequoia and Kings Canyon, the Kings Canyon road was still closed for the winter, so we couldn’t get out to the further reaches. Still pretty imposing and impressive to view.

A lot of addicts transfer their addiction to Jesus. It’s not recovery, it’s just another addiction.

Like golf, shoppping, eating and other common transfer addictions. It’s not any healthier.

Yes, I realize that. Society doesn’t exactly encourage well-rounded individuals so that we develop into thinking, creative beings who are valuable in our own right, and the push to commercialize every aspect of our lives doesn’t do anything to help that. The push to be “popular” rather than to develop our intellect during our school years is a great shame as well because it goes right along with the commercialization aspect. We are constantly having to “sell ourselves”. Any tiny bit of eccentric behavior is seen as “having something wrong” with us.

And when you don’t measure up to the expectations of others, it really does fuck with your head.

Malaysian MP hails German World Cup win by praising Hitler

On Tuesday, Germany demolished the host nation Brazil in a 7-1 World Cup win that will go down in history. It was an astonishing victory for the Germans, and an epically humiliating loss for the Brazilians. For observers, it was at the very least remarkable.

After the game, Malaysian MP Bung Mokhtar Radin, a member of the dominant United Malays National Organization, decided to tweet to congratulate Germany.

He did so by congratulating Hitler.

Yeah it is one heckuva view from the top. Down in the canyon is just amazing. When we went it was a full moon so at night the rocks walls were just lit up. Then there are some of the cliffs that literally jut up from one side of the river. You can’t even cross without hitting a wall in some spots. It is an awesome place from above and from down inside.

The Catholic Church teaches, and devout Catholics believe that ALL forms of birth control is a sin. What happens the first time that a company (not a true ‘religious organization’) that is owned by Catholics says “We can’t cover ANY form of BC, since our beliefs hold it to be a sin”.

There’s an older, bigger problem that predates the Hobby Lobby case. Catholic hospitals. My sister had an ectopic pregnancy removed in a Catholic hospital many years ago. I don’t think they can be counted on to do that sort of thing any more. Tunnel View is pretty much the iconic shooting locale for Yosemite. There is a nice overlook on the other end as you come over the pass as well. You get a view down that end of the valley to point where it turns at Half Dome.

I think I posted two Yosemite shots last year side-by-side where one was from each view.

There is a kernel of truth to that: the GOP could do a lot more to appeal to Latino voters, but in doing so, they would piss off their rabid base constituency.

Oh sure. The GOP could do a lot to try and appeal to Latinos. Problem is, they have to also appeal to the same knuckle dragging INVADING BROWN HORDE! DISEASED MONGRELS! SHOOT OR DEPORT THEM ALL! Retweeted by GG. The short piece doesn’t give specifics: “The report clearly documents how biased training by the FBI leads to biased surveillance.” And wasn’t that during the Bush admin? And then goes on to question the Obama admin: “Nearly three years ago, the Obama administration pledged to purge bigoted training materials from federal agencies. This report clearly calls into question whether that commitment has been fulfilled and the urgent need for re-training of law enforcement officials.”

Nothing—nothing—this President does will ever please everyone, esp those who criticize him the most.

Several people have tweeted this to GG who has retweeted them.

Not surprising. I could have written that response myself.

And they fail to understand that Latinos have a sense of community that goes beyond their front porch step: they want good schools and reliable public services, even if they cost cost money and do not support such a radical “cut all taxes and abolish government” approach.

And since they have seen locals frothing at the mouth and passing legislation against other Latinos, they have fewer reservations about appealing to the federal government.

re: #81 Lidane

My brush with the Secret Service happened in 1992. I was a volunteer for the Clinton campaign and Bill had come to Houston to speak at a rally. I had my volunteer badge on and went for a rope fence to avoid the long line at the metal detector I’d already gone through. SS guy got right in my face until I showed the badge and was able to walk by.

My first encounter with the Secret Service was during the 1976 Carter Presidential campaign.

As Governor of Georgia, Carter had previously attended our Annual BBQ and Summer Games, so he was considered a friend of the company. And his presence was no big deal.

At the first meeting, the Secret Service agent seem uncomfortable with the idea of Carter mingling with some 3,000 music industry executives, talent, and Rock and Roll party goers (damn some of them smoke pot, and there will be food and open bars everywhere).

So we worked thru the laundry list of communication (dedicated phone lines), security (site survey, control areas where Carter will mingle, and area access badges, logistical (where what is), and medical facilities. The Secret Service did pay for enhancements they required for that event.

It was a good party (they all were). In addition to Carter, other non music industry notables were Andy Warhol, Don King, and Rusty Calley. (Calley was kept carefully separate from Carter, as Phil did not want any press photos of Calley and Carter together. Hunter S. Thompson bowed out at the last moment to our relief.

The press followed Carter around the site en-mass with camera motor drives clicking like a giant insect.

Still kicking myself for not getting a photograph of myself standing between Don King and Jimmy Carter.

(re-edit checked my time line)

re: #373 RealityBasedSteve

I had coffee with a friend last night, and we got talking about the logical implications from the Hobby Lobby decision. One that is the next logical step, since the HL Owners don’t object to ALL forms of birth control, but only to some for religious reasons. (not rooted in the science).

The Catholic Church teaches, and devout Catholics believe that ALL forms of birth control is a sin. What happens the first time that a company (not a true ‘religious organization’) that is owned by Catholics says “We can’t cover ANY form of BC, since our beliefs hold it to be a sin”.

I know that this is sitting right around the corner, getting ready to raise its ugly head.

RBS

The church may say it, but many Catholic women and their male family and friends do not follow the rules of the church with regards to birth control and many other things.

Who knows, maybe all this is going to lead to a collision between dogma and reality. It is not like it is not needed.

And as we all know all too well, the churches own people have had some big problems following the dogma and doing everything right.

I always wondered as a Catholic myself, why do people say they ‘believe’ but do not follow the rules. Nothing of good for anyone in that.

When I was young and I still had friends who would sort of try to get me to believe but who were very moderate in practice, I used to tell them that they didn’t want me to believe. If I actually thought that I was going to be tortured for eternity for doing certain things, like sex outside of marriage or drinking, I sure as hell wouldn’t be doing them. I don’t even think it would be a difficult decision. It would be easy - provided I actually believed it.

OK, I know it’s been a long day and i’m super tired due to lack of sleep and whatnot, but am I really the only one who can’t quite make sense of part of the following paragraphs (taken from the start of a commentary on Israeli media in English)?

IDF and Hamas enter the second day of “Operation Protective Edge”, with both parties acting in contrasting ways: Hamas has activated thus far most of its repertoire prepared in advanced for this round of fighting, but has failed to cause casualties or major damage to Israel.

However, the IDF began the operation with moderation on its behalf, and works according to an orderly plan of attacking targets, which have become increasingly intense. The objective of the IDF is to put gradual pressure, which will continue to increase, without exhausting all the qualitative targets, within the first two-three days. The growing pressure should lead Hamas to consider at any given moment the continued profitability of the fighting.

It has come to be seen that by the end of the first day of Operation Protective Edge, Hamas, with the assistance of Islamic Jihad, tried to surprise with a heavy attack on Israeli territory. For this reason, Hamas sent a Marine squad to attack in the area of kibbutz Zikim, while in parallel volleys of missiles were fired on large areas of Israel, including Tel Aviv, the Sharon Plain and Jerusalem. The firing of rockets even arrived the northern city of Hadera.

re: #482 Killgore Trout

Hamas has attempted to hit a lot of things - people for one. Thus far, they’ve been spectacularly awful in that regard. Thankfully few Israelis (or Palestinians) have been injured from Hamas projectiles.

They’ve failed to hit targets they’ve aimed for, whether by missile, or even infiltrating Israel by sea (as the video you provided earlier shows their forces coming under fire and being killed on the beach). Hamas will claim that bit to be victory, that they were able to wade ashore, even though they were all killed.

Israel has Iron Dome and other point defense systems in place around Dimona and other key facilities. It is doubtful that they’d be able to hit the reactor, but if they did, and this presupposes that they’d be able to damage the reactor and its containment systems, then the ensuing fallout would generally take it over the Negev and into Jordan and Saudi Arabia before looping back towards Egypt and then to Gaza based on prevailing winds depending on time of year.

Excellent point. It isn’t “the end of the world” at all. It’s rising food prices, famine, various other types of suffering that I probably can’t even figure, changing coast lines, loss of property, relocation of large numbers of people, probably lots of refuges, loss of many species, but not the “end of the world.” Do the people on the far right think that that’s what people who believe climate change is real are saying? That it’s “the end of the world?”

So both are going out of necessity

I have gotten rid of two spruce so far from my yard, both about 17 m tall, and both within 2 m of the house. The next one to go is one of the maples, it is about 35 years old and has been losing branches (large branches) whenever the wind picks up.
