Trump’s presidency so far has been:
1) Bigoted
2) Incompetent
3) Corrupt
4) Compromised by the Russians
These points are completely non-partisan and are also completely consistent with how the campaign went. There were absolutely no surprises about any of this.
So in case any 3rd party voters or supposedly fooled Trump supporters care to rejoin the human race, the question of “How could you have done something so clinically fucktarded as voting for Fuckface von Clownstick for President?” cannot be evaded. If this point is not really addressed, these people will just keep on voting for dangerous demagogues like Trump.

Ami Horowitz, the guy who planted the seed behind Trump’s Sweden claim, is the author of this film:
U.N. Me is a documentary film about the United Nations by first-time filmmakers Ami Horowitz and Matthew Groff, which premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in November 2009.[1]
The documentary - or “docutainment” according to Horowitz[2] - which began production in 2006,[3] is a critique that depicts the United Nations as an organization that has drifted from its founding principles to the point where it now “enables evil and sows global chaos.”[4][5] The film follows Horowitz and Groff as they travel and look to expose the numerous scandals and cases of abuse of the U.N. Through interviews with involved parties and archived footage, they provide a look into events such as a shooting that has gone forgotten, where UN soldiers opened fire on unarmed protestors and the “Oil-for-Food” program. Also featured is evidence of the use of UN funds and equipment to support terrorist activity through complacency or complicity, including video footage of insurgents loading assault rifles and RPGs into a UN vehicle to make an escape.
This anti-UN derangement indicates to me that we’re dealing with another far-right Israel fanatic.

Ummm….yeahh…. sorta big problem with that: I can;t recall any campaign in this country -EVER - that made an electoral success out of using “How could you be so stupid to vote for X….” as a campaign theme. No matter how awful X might/might have been (and seriously, Donald Trump takes the all-time prize for Awful President), you just don’t get much of anyplace in politics by insulting the voters. Now of course, the real trick (and, IMO the key to a “blue wave” election in 2018) is to get the point across without pushing it directly: i.e. getting the electorate to face up to “How could we have been so stupid…” - but silently; and then, giving them a viable alternative to vote for to make up for it. The latter point is, I think, going to be the vital one to get back control of (or at least lessen the GOP’s deathgrip on) Congress.

Good in theory, but they have dug themselves into being for: Russia, Fascism, Crony Captialism, et. all. The problem is that if their primary motivation is ‘what do liberals hate’, then they will do that no matter how much it hurts themselves. When one of my mixed-Japanese friends had the white half of his own family say internment camps were the right idea TO HIM, we’re not getting out of this one with sweet reason.
So when a (white) felon buys guns from an undercover agent for an attack “in the spirit of Dylann Roof,” the story about his first hearing includes such nauseating details as:
“He looked real good. He looked real strong,” McDowell’s mother, Joanne Clewis, said
and
Sniffles escaped from his mother as Clewis dabbed the tears from her eyes. He mouthed the words “I love you” in her direction, then gave a sheepish smile before his face sank briefly into sadness.
and
“I love him,” she said. “He’s a good kid. … It’s totally shocking.” (apparently his previous prison term and white supremacist tattoos provided her no clue.)
And that story got almost no national play and disappeared from coverage in about 5 minutes.
When a racist (white) fuck shoots three people while shouting racist slurs in Olathe Kansas, the first articles published go into his military career in detail and the editor of the KC Star finds it very important to tweet:
Neighbors say they believe suspect is a military veteran with PTSD. He also was recently diagnosed with serious illness, they say. @KCStar
— Greg Farmer (@gregfarmerKC) February 23, 2017

But then the question remains of just how this malignant stupidity is to be alleviated if everyone tap dances around calling it what it is.

re: #32 EPR-radar
The answer is to forget about those that voted in such a way that caused Trump to win, concentrate on stopping him and getting good candidates - and doing what we can to win Texas - and winning the next elections. There are a whole lot of people who didn’t vote or will change their minds.
Ultimately, we have to string together wins so that Republicans have to do soul searching. Then the party will begin to marginalize the crazies.

Just someone having a bit of fun. There are dozens of various accounts like this for various agencies. A couple of them may even be authentic, not that anyone can check. Deliberate trolling, to be effective, has to lead toward some goal. If this is trolling, the trend lines are all real bad for the Trump WH and contradict every public statement that Spicer, Kellyanne and Stephen Miller give.

If it’s verifiable, then it’s publicly available. If it’s not publicly available, it’s not verifiable.
If it’s not verifiable, then we can’t really judge whether there is any actual grasp on the internal dynamics because we don’t know what the dynamics are.
Now, if tomorrow Melania files for a divorce, this would confirm this account’s authenticity (yes, it doesn’t say that she would, only mulls it over). That would be a specific piece of information. Otherwise it’s just glorified cold reading.

Right. Anyone can start an anonymous account and fill it based on the bits and pieces from the media.
There are one or two that I would buy as being more legit, based on timing and actions taken, but even there I wouldn’t trust it as news the way I would treat an anonymous source from a place with a reputation for solid investigative journalism.*
None of the White House accounts fall into that category, though.

Random trolling by 4-channers or the like need not have any discernible political intent.
If we proceed on that basis, what assurance do you have that I am not a 4chan type trying to fuck with everybody here? I mean, only one person here has met me IRL and maybe she is not telling the truth either…
So at some point, you assign probability based on your personal experience to online interactions and then you assign weight to them accordingly.
So in my opinion…the account is likely real based on my observation and how I weigh various details and this is completely subjective of course. Most of the other folks here are reaching a different conclusion and I am perfectly okay with that. We have different experiences and use different criteria in making subjective decisions.

Reload the comment, I hid it under spoiler.
It’s a shitton of work to maintain a fake persona on a blog like this. Not saying it’s impossible - far from it - but in terms of time investment versus impact (what’s the gain?) I don’t think this is a high value target.
Twitter’s a lot easier. You confine yourself to one or two topics, no need to reference the kind of things in life that make you a three dimensional person. You need to maintain your anonymity, no need to build any kind of relationships. Easy mask to take on and off. Work from what’s publicly known, embroider it a little bit, and voila, recipe for the satisfaction of pulling the wool over the eyes of thousands of people for as long as you can keep from crowing about it somewhere they might find out. And there are definitely people out there who get off on that sort of thing.

re: #110 klys (maker of Silmarils)
Maybe so. Still, I am skeptical about the ‘lulz’ angle since it does not angle towards sensationalism. ‘Lulz’ types would almost certainly want to put out real nasty stuff about Melania or Kellyanne to get more attention…but as others here have noted, the info on the account seems pretty much in line with what we have already seen in most of these characters.
So Occam does apply to some degree. If real, it confirms what we already actually know from other sources for the most part aside from some minor anecdotes.
If fictional and meant to serve a purpose, the purpose is so obscure at this point as to defy description right now (which might go along with the inner power struggle theory if we are not actually the target audience)
If not meant to serve any purpose and not sensational, then you really do get into why somebody would bother? Again, the broader strokes are already being leaked to major newspapers anyway. This why I think the razor cuts the way it does (built in assumption the the writer is a rational actor with rational motivation)
Dinner now, bbl maybe.

re: #32 EPR-radar
That’s why it’s such a difficult problem. You are 100% correct that telling voters they are stupid is not a winning political strategy.
Personally, I think the problem is that Democrats get off on administrative competence porn. Whenever they go there (Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, Hillary), the electorate just doesn’t respond.
I mean, I get it. “Competence” sounds like it should be the bare minimum for governing, so when the GOP demonstrates they aren’t, it’s really tempting to hammer on this issue. But voters want big picture stuff too. Barack and Bill were great at that — plus they had competence. Hillary tried, but Trump’s sheer awfulness was so overwhelming (and media saturating) that it was hard to go for the high ground.

re: #132 Scottish Dragon
If fictional, in my opinion, some of them are likely still affiliated with staff in the WH. My theory is that there are one or two accounts run by the same person, or two people colluding, to basically obfuscate. The continued narrative is that the administration is filled with incompetence, and that is a result of a lack of competence at the top. That narrative is *false*. The administration is filled with people who are very competent, just not at anything we want them to be competent at doing. Running ratf*cking accounts bolsters the narrative that everything is on fire and about to collapse, which kind of obscures that almost nothing has been done to really successfully stop the agenda.
Flynn gone doesn’t change Russia involvement, or the rollback on sanctions, or allowing the FSB to communicate with American business. Changing the text of an EO on immigration didn’t stop ICE from pulling someone out of a hospital bed. So far, the administration is effectively paralyzing government in some places, destroying citizen protections in others, and playing the base like a fiddle all the while. Nothing those twitter accounts say change that.

Clinton won the popular vote and lost in the electoral college by razor-thin margins in three states. Against Trump.
This should not have been a remotely close election, and a large fraction of the blame really does fall on the electorate. As you say, Trump’s awfulness was overwhelming, and yet this was a non-issue for way too many voters.

But why automatically assume you are dealing with 4chan? That would be as theoretically unknowable, would it not?
Anyways, it has been interesting, but I am hungry.
Why do you automatically rule them out?
I make the assumption that they are a real possibility based on my time on the Internet. And given that possibility and the non-zero number involved, I have to err on the side of caution.
We’re social creatures. Standing up and saying “I think this is real” comes with a cost if it ends up that that isn’t the case. How much of your reputation are you willing to stake on it being real? Because that’s ultimately what the question is: what credibility are you willing to lose if you advocate for something as real that isn’t?
I prefer to keep my skepticism in place, particularly when there are red flags (like there are here). PARTICULARLY when the topic is one rife for anonymous accounts claiming things that I want to hear, about how it’s a shitshow. Confirmation bias is strong. The best way I know to counter it is to demand extra evidence. Truthiness isn’t something I aspire to. If I’m going to mock the other side for accepting things that they want to be true with no evidence, I have to be damn sure I’m not falling into the same trap myself.

It’s not even good fiction because this alone would get their identity exposed in a sec.
re: #36 Belafon
I’m of the opinion that this is not a person on the inside. But, if only one of those is true, that would still be a big deal. This is definitely one of those cases where we have to worry about confirmation bias.
re: #37 Scottish Dragon
I’m really wondering about that…but this would have been at Mar-A -Lago last weekend and a lot harder to track wrt to who was where and when than it would have been at the White House. Also pretty sure Melania isn’t going to say names. It has been fucking obvious from day one she is not happy and she is not moving into the White House.
So I am still going with plausible for now. The Bannon bits look very credible.
If it’s not someone on the inside for real, their insight serves them well, as Obi-Wan once told Luke Skywalker.

Because, to his supporters, Trump “tells it like it is”, which, in reality, means he’s a lying sack of shit.
I saw a B-52 low and turning over the islands today on the way back from work (on President Street in east Savannah). They were turning a bit steep for a BUFF and had enough throttle on to leave smoke. There’s plenty of Army and Marine aviation around here, but I haven’t seen a B-52 in the flesh in years.
For a few moments I pondered the possibility that Trump had finally fucked us all, and bombs were in the air. I think the Concerned Scientists are right, we’re closer to really horrible shit than we’ve been in a couple of decades, and for all the worst reasons. Rapert files bill to rename Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (@ Arkansas Blog, Arkansas Times) https://t.co/Tol6cjqARU
— Arkansas Blog (@ArkansasBlog) February 23, 2017
Sen. Jason Rapert, the bullying preacher of Conway, continues his wild assault on reason by filing today his promised bill to force the renaming of the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport.
Here’s the bill. It’s rigamarole, but the definition would make it illegal for the airport to be named after Clinton because it, among others, was built with public funds and the Clintons were living at the time the airport was renamed for them. The definition fits Hillary Clinton as well as Bill Clinton because she also held elected federal office, one of the disqualifying elements. Passenger fees, concessions and federal money operate the airport by the way. As a matter of state law, it’s governed by a commission appointed by the Little Rock City Board. The commission approved the name change almost four years ago.

I’m really hoping McMullin sees the blood in the water and primaries him. I won’t agree with most of McMullin’s votes when push comes to shove but I think he’d at least respect the office and not go on pathetic witchhunts to distract from his party’s president being a crook.

I just don’t know where they got the idea he would be able to open the mines up again. And I understand that Clinton didn’t communicate on the issue the best.
The coal mines aren’t there anymore, it’s all mountaintop removal now that needs a fraction of the workers, and those workers are demolition and heavy equipment and truck drivers.
The market isn’t there anymore.
And I don’t know how Hillary could have communicated it any better than she did: those old jobs are gone, they aren’t coming back, so here’s my plan for new job training for jobs that are better paying and safer.

And that’s the problem with politics. ANd it’s why I never subscribed to Sanders as well. I think Sanders was making false promises as well. I think Clinton was far more honest than either Sanders or Trump when it came to life in this country. And so many people left and right hated her for that.

Lots people chose the ‘friendly lie’ that Trump would bring back the 1950s. Oddly enough, they were almost exclusively white. But, you know, the blacks and browns vote for Democrats because of ‘Free Stuff’.
The fact is economies change and ours did too. Those who want us to return to the New Deal economics. I’m sympathetic believe me but how do you convince an electorate of that who wasn’t even completely sold on ACA? And let’s be honest the WWC was far more sympathetic to lefty economics when they thought they would be the only ones benefitting from the programs. The reason why the WWC left he Democrats isn’t because the Dems sold them out, it’s because a lot of the WWC hated that the Democrats began to champion the rights of women, LGBT people, minorities, and immigrants the same way they have working people.
A little bit dark around the edges but I am sure it will go down real easy.

She was far better on race than anyone. Sanders was just using the fact that he had as a young man done good things in the Civil Rights Movement. Good for him but it was patronizing as hell for him and his campaign to use that when talking with minority communities.

My mom’s grandfathers both died of black lung. In fact, the tough life of miners is exactly why my family lives in Virginia today. My mom’s dad didn’t want to work in the coal mines or steel mills. See, this is where I disagree about the whole helpless working class thing, Grandpa was a man with less than a high school education who after he got out of Korea got some vocational training and came down here to VA. HE never lost his Western Pa accents and ways but he made his home here because he wanted to choose his own destiny and not let the economy of Johnstown choose it for him.

After Grandpa dropped out of high school. Not sure if it was born or after WWII, he worked in the steel mills a bit. He hated it. What I didn’t know until the very end of his life is that he considered going into the Air Force at one time. He either changed his mind or his murmur got him denied. Eventually when the Korean conflict started, he was drafted. He wasn’t a book smart guy so he didn’t want to go to college so he went to trade school and trained as a brickmason. He was able to work outside like he wanted to. My mom’s childhood was far from prosperous but she and my uncle were able to attend college and later my brothers and I were able to know our grandpa in a way Mom wasn’t able to know hers. I never thought of my grandfather as a sort of rebel before but in many ways he was.

I think I found a distant cousin who died in a mining disaster in that era. Not sure but as you got at already BWS, the benefits sucked and then there was the black lung. My mom’s grandfathers didn’t work in the mines because yay coal, they worked in the mines because as immigrants who had a tough grasp on the English language, it really was some of the only work they could have done and it took them from us way too early. When my grandma’s dad died, the doctors said he was a perfectly healthy man outside his lungs. Yes, the mines killed him and took him from his children and grandchildren way too young. I would have never known him regardless since he would have been 100 the year I was born but he would have been there for my mom the way his dad and brother were there for their grandkids.

yep, you’re right.
Up here in SE Alaska, both hard metal, underground mines have been hiring over the last several months. The mines produce zinc, silver, and quite a bit of gold. Both are in remote locations so the companies have “man camps” for their employees. Yah, I know man camp is sexist but that’s a hold-over from earlier times. Both mines employ many females. Starting pay for a novice miner runs about $60K/year. Experienced miners with time in can earn $100K+/yr. It takes that kind of money to have an average life style in SE Alaska.
So, mining jobs are available if you want to relocate. I doubt that Kentucky coal miner with the family could ever afford to move here even if he wanted to.

In the Pennsylvania coal region where the anthracite was mined, you can see the layout of parts of small towns right around the breaker towers. Small cottages in rows. Most of the breakers are gone. Most of the older houses are fading. Lots of culm burners along I-81 and around that area. That is a culm mountain from mining days outside Shamokin Pa. Pull out and see the size of it? That’s AFTER about 20 years of carrying it away to be burned. You can see culm hills outside just about every town.

You know speaking of coal, it’s interesting, I was told tha the Irish/Welsh predominately went to where anthracite was mined but Eastern Europeans like my mom’s grandpas went to where I think Bituminous was. What’s truly is a funny coincidence is my Dad had some family in Johnstown, Pa too but they were gone long before the first of my mom’s family arrived in the US. Honestly, there was a time when coal mining was needed but it’s not anymore.

True, but where was a 20 year old in W VA going to hear about the dangers of
trafficTrump?
A lack of sophistication is not necessarily a sign that someone is evil.
Turn on a television. Read a magazine or a newspaper. Go to the library where they might have an internet connection.
How is it that these people managed to hear all about how Trump was going to do all the things they wanted, but nothing else about him in a year or more?
The Berniacs went on and on about how Hillary only won primaries in southern states because the voters here were “low-information” voters who didn’t have access to information. I thought that was bullshit as well.

Seriously, it’s like they think Chicago is the only place where violence happens. And like they give two shits about the people of Chicago. And as LH has pointed out, Chicago’s not exactly far from lax gun Indiana. That’s my biggest problem with just going states rights on guns. Our states aren’t vaccums.
re: #378 Cheechako
But you get to be a star on A&E !!

It’s a poorly-kept secret that Chicago buys everything illegal in Indiana. From harmless things like fireworks to dangerous things like guns and meth - everybody knows where it comes from, but nobody talks about it.

Not only is there inflow of guns from Indiana (hiya Mike P, we know what you did as gov), but on a per capita basis, there are quite a few cities/communities with higher crime rates or higher murder rates or both.
All of this is accessible from the FBI crime stats. But because Chicago is Obama’s home town, Trump keeps fixating on Chicago crime.
re: #384 HappyWarrior
Strip mining is mostly western Pa. The “hard” coal was NE PA and where I posted.List of Patches. You cannot go far in the woods between Scranton and Sunbury Pa and not stumble on an old mine, culm or a “pirate” dig.
Brocton Pa Tuscarora coal mine. Everywhere you see gray and black is culm and coal.

That’s the only reason why they hit on Chicago. If Obama were from LA or NY, they’d hit on it.

Hell’s bells, let’s just look at Chicago’s neighbor to the east: Gary, IN. As in, “former murder capital of the world,” Gary. But we can’t talk about Gary, because white Republican Jesus.
re: #297 Backwoods_Sleuth
The coal mines aren’t there anymore, it’s all mountaintop removal now that needs a fraction of the workers, and those workers are demolition and heavy equipment and truck drivers.
The market isn’t there anymore.
And I don’t know how Hillary could have communicated it any better than she did: those old jobs are gone, they aren’t coming back, so here’s my plan for new job training for jobs that are better paying and safer.
And it’s the same as the sad tales about the factory towns and lost industries.

The kid in question is here for medical treatment, but ICE is trying to ship him home because reasons.
And let me say another thing, I just don’t see these people as helpless to move to change their lot necessarily either. Immigrants with much less than they had have moved. African-Americans during the Great Migration did the same. I think many of these people really hoped that the sitaution would change in their towns and it sucks for them that it didn’t but what happened was NOT Obama nor the Democratic Party’s fault.

Ha! I mean yeah. I am sorry. I just don’t see these people as hopeless. I know I have better internet access and TV channels than someone in the rural US but it’s not as if they are completely devoid of information that would contradict their biases. I don’t think they’re all bigots but I do think a lot of them aer ignorant out of choice and not by mere circumstance.

It’s “law & order” taken to the extreme, applying laws in a draconian fashion to appear “tough” to appeal to his knuckle-dragging fascist supporters. Worse is the lack of any due process or appeals process.
I did talk to my Dad. Since i’ve adopted immigration as my pet cause and my brother has the environment and its effect on people. Dad’s said he wants to do something about helping prisoners rehabilitate. He’s already done some of that already.

Truth be told - and I’m speaking from personal experience here - the negative connotations to these terms come from the fact that it makes some people uncomfortably aware of just how much they are selfish assholes. Rather than do some introspection and self-improvement, however, they take the coward’s way out and denigrate those who have.

Wherever zinc and silver deposits are to be found, whether mined or not, lead (Pb) is also usually present in unhealthy concentrations.
