Conservative filth really do hate earning an actual living and contributing to society. They are either living off of GOP welfare, corporate welfare, or lawsuits.

The Florida Democratic Party would be foolish if they don’t see Rep Demmings as a potential gubernatorial or senatorial candidate down the road. And I think Pelosi sees something in her too since she was one of the impeachment managers. She’s intelligent, well spoken, and I think could be a big part of a successful Democratic party in Florida.

lawhawk  Feb 19, 2020 • 7:59:55am

Lost in the mix of yesterday’s pardons was that Trump pardoned Michael Milken, who was prosecuted by the SDNY.

The prosecutor? Rudy Giuliani.

Milken’s advocates, for example, included all of the above — along with Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal attorney. It was Giuliani who charged Milken with 98 felony counts, including racketeering, insider trading and securities fraud, when he served as the top federal prosecutor in New York City in 1989.

“He paid a big price, paid a very tough price,” Trump said of Milken, who was among a small group of GOP mega donors who spent Election Night 2018 at the White House, according to media reports.

Never mind that Milken’s sentence was light considering the crimes, but it again shows Trump doesn’t care about crimes when his cronies are involved, or he thinks he can personally benefit from reducing the sentences.

Trump also pardoned those who engaged in various kinds of fraud. One, Paul Pogue, was the owner of a construction company who was found guilty of underpaying his taxes. His family donated large sums to Trump’s reelection campaign. Pay - To - Play.

It’s not about justice. It’s about the benefit to Trump.

He doesn’t care about the rule of law for the same reasons.

And this is why people are disappointed about Kamala Harris’s treatment by the political class on and off social media. I don’t consider myself “tough on crime” in the sense that I want to impose harsh sentences on drug dealers and I even oppose the death penalty in nearly every circumstance (war criminals are my exception) but hell yeah I think going after political corruption is something we should do and political corruption along with racism defines Trumpism. And Kamala I think would have articulated the case against that the best of anyone running. She’s free to do whatever she wants but I’d love to see her on the ticket. My dream ticket was Harris-O’Rourke or Castro. I loved the idea of a California-Texas duo who are relatively young.

Yean curious choice of words. The funny thing is if anyone violated the Logan Act, it was likely Rudy and definitely not Murphy. Murphy is a Senator, he is an official member of hte US government, Rudy? He’s Trump’s lawyer. America’s mayor blah blah, the man is Michael Cohen’s successor. He’s who Trump gets to do his dirty work.

IMO the only thing keeping him from going full autocratic are the institutions he can’t control. Look at the individuals and parts of government he goes after the most. They’re ones he can’t control by rage tweets. And I think that’s why McConnell has facilitated him stacking the judiciary and why although I know it is extremely unlikely, I can’t see SCOTUS being increased even though I do want revenge for Garland.

The fact of the matter is this. We elected the loudest voice that thought our previous President wasn’t a natural born citizen. Someone whose ties to the United States are in fact longer than Trump’s. It would basically be if we went from having Lincoln to someone who thought the South was morally justified in seceding. Biggest part of that is the simple reality that talking to a foreign national, even if a member of a foreign government, is not the same as conducting diplomacy. There’s really two reasons why Faux is “reporting” and Trump is repeating this horseshit:

1. They desperately want a Democrat or liberal to be charged with violating the Logan Act as a measure of “revenge” for the prosecution of Mike Flynn

2. They’re also trying to come up with some reason why Trump’s “diplomacy” with Iran has been a total bust that doesn’t mean acknowledging that “maximum pressure” was a mistake and the diplomats who said so were right.

I think by illegally violated, it’s Trumpsoeak for not doing it in a way that benefited him (Trump). Certainly we know that Trump had no problem with what Cotton did to undermine the Iran deal. I dunno. There’s a part of me that thinks Trump is dumb as a Big Mac left in the sun and another part of me that sees some Machiavellianness to what he’s doing. I think the latter is more the more shrewd ones like Pompeo, Barr, Miller, and others doing their thing though.

Because it was always lip service. He doesn’t care about any of it unless he can personally profit and benefit from it.

Everyone is a mark/con for one of his grifts, and even the criminal justice reform was done so that he could gain votes down the road from the people he thinks will suddenly vote for him because he did that bill.

We’re still awaiting his infrastructure week, to go along with his DOA Middle East peace plan, and his DOA tax cut vaporware effort ahead of the election (repeat of 2018), and his DOA health care vaporware.

And Trump of course will oppose any refugees in this country and we will repeat one of the things that FDR rightfully is getting more scrutiny in the annals of history on.

I grew up in the Industrial Midwest during the heyday of the White Working Man, and lots of those well-paid employees were full-on racists back then - without any trace of “economic anxiety” to fuel it…that has changed little.

That’s pretty much what I said. It wasn’t economic resentment. It was social resentment. It was hearing Spanish spoken where only English was spoken in their childhoods even though many of them would have had parents or grandparents that spoke heavily accented English or even not English all. It was hearing African-American activists say that unarmed people who get killed by cops aren’t thugs but human beings deserving of justice. It’s easy to buy the narrative that Trump rose due to economic anxiousness but it’s really a lie.

Exactly.

I really hope I never see a seventy year old+ white man who has been part of the system for years run as an outsider. Trump isn’t an outsider. Bernie isn’t one either. Neither were Ross Perot and Ron Paul for that matter. The real outsiders are those who represent a change of how American presidents see themselves. It’s why Obama is infinitely more revolutionary in the truest sense of the word than Bernie ever was. Bernie is just the old socialist dinosaur and Trump’s an old fascist dinosaur.

Makes it all the more disturbing that Trump is trying to incite criminal proceedings against Senator Murphy.

What’s amazing is how fast common right wing tropes are being destroyed.

‘Chicago Democrat corruption’ is a very common canard: Trump just pardoned Blago yesterday, not one peep about it.

Logan Act defense trope was ‘it’s an old law never enforced’ yet now it’s trending against Murphy. This is doubly asinine because Trumpers, while still private citizens, were acting as government emissaries engaging with other governments, while Murphy is actually a Senator with the actual power to engage with other governments.
Make that triple asinine: remember Tom Cotton and other senators writing a letter to Iran?

The whole malice vs ignorance vector doesn’t matter, these cretins are cancer.

My mom was a widow so we could not afford to join the White Flight to the suburbs, I stayed and grew up with the blacks and Latinos and all the people the white working class learned to despise and found out that they were decent neighbors just like anyone else.

I recall the hype over Hillbilly Elegy, but one aspect of it seemed accurate: the Appalachian whites who showed up in the 60’s were an ethnic group unto their own, white but not quite like the Central/Eastern European-immigrant whites or the WASP whites in our neighborhood

And I think what Bernie dishonestly has fueled with alot of young people is this idea that white working class people started trending Republican for other reasons. A Democratic candidate hasn’t won the white male vote with over 50% of the vote since 1964. It wasn’t a coincidence that after that, the GOP doubled down on white identity and male identity. I’m not someone who would have supported the pre Southern Strategy GOP but the GOP became a party of white resentment starting with that aftermath and later male resentment.

Right and I’m talking about how that’s grown in recent years. We’ve always had populists going back to our earliest days but in the past, we saw the limits of populism left and right. Populism isn’t all bad I concede. I think it’s not radical at all to say corporations have too much power or the federal government. 99.9% of “reality TV” is a total sham, either scripted ahead of time or carefully edited after all the footage is in to create a scenario that bears little resemblance to reality. And that .01% of the time? It’s something spontaneous that the producers left in because it helped the narrative.

I look at the names of some of the alt right big names and they’re ethnic names. They’re the descendants of people who would have been told that they weren’t “really white” and now they believe this stupid white nationalism that has emerged. It wasn’t PoC telling my white ethnic ancestors that they could never assimilate. It was other white people. This isn’t to say “fuck white people” but rather “No Richard Spencer just because we’re both white doesn’t mean I will ever make common cause with you.” Ethnic is outdated anyhow. People descended from nearly every country and ethnic group on the planet have come here.

For some reason this reminds me of my great-aunt and uncle taking a European tour in the 70s. They had run into a lot of money, sold their farm or something, and heard that the European tour was one of the things you had to do when you had money. So off they went. When they got back, my great aunt said that France is “kind of nice,” but “It-lee was sorta’ run down. It was more like Old Mexico.”

A significant part of that plan means reinstating the Obama path and expanding on it to go after not only remaining coal fired energy generating plants, but natural gas plants as well. Convince energy suppliers to rely on alt-energy sources, rather than natgas (or coal).

Couple that with ambition plan to aid HVAC and home/business energy efficiencies.

re: #178 b.d. (Is Rush Dead Yet?)

Pardons are only for those who can somehow benefit Trump personally.

Can Trump enrich his campaign or his personal coffers? If yes, then you get a pardon.
Can Trump count on any additional voters going for him? If yes, then you get a pardon.

Those are his motivations. Justice is irrelevant and has nothing to do with any of these pardons.

As with all the other Trump pardons, it’s about Trump. It’s what the pardon does to help Trump. Does he energize his base (Arpaio, D’Souza)? Does he profit? Does he potentially gain voters or proxies who will tout Trump on basis of pardon?

That’s it.

The administration of justice is irrelevant. If he thought justice matters, he’d have commuted a shit-ton of drug convictions for nonviolent offenders that were racially discriminatory (think crack/cocaine sentencing differences based on who were investigated and prosecuted), etc. But that’s not entering into it, because deep down, Trump remains a racist and wont undo those sentences, but rather those of the right (white) kind of people.

JULIAN ASSANGE: Yes. We can say, we have said, repeatedly that over the last two months that our source is not the Russian government and it is not a state party.

He said it in public, not under oath. In public you are free to create alternative facts, usually without legal consequences. In a court of law, not so much. But here, as Trump has done before, the offer was that Assange should perjure himself and Trump will pardon him.

He said it in public, not under oath. In public you are free to create alternative facts, usually without legal consequences. In a court of law, not so much.

Which is why Trump will never testify under oath. He could not open his mouth in court without contradicting either himself or other sworn testimony…

re: #2 Joe Bacon 🌹

This is why we need a Federal SLAPP law.

I can’t remember the rule under Erie as to whether anti-SLAPP laws are considered procedural or substantive.

I’m not even sure we need an anti-SLAPP law so much as a revision of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Maybe adding something to Rule 12? The Supreme Court gets to make the Federal Rules and then Congress can veto them, but they only have like 6 or 7 months, I think. Hell, even a more expansive view of Rule 12(b)(6) might be enough to get an anti-SLAPP rule in place.

Granted, those won’t necessarily entitle the winning side to attorney fees, but it’s better than having to slog through to a motion for summary judgment.

Ah, yeah, that was one of Drachinifel’s best yet. Easily to naval history what The Chieftain is to tanks and Ian McCollum to firearms. The Eastern Front has always fascinated me since my grandparents had aunts, uncles, and cousins who got caught up in the middle of it. The reason why I brought up Yugoslavia is according to family lore, my grandfather had a cousin killed and the survivors joined the Partisans. I’m not sure about the cousin getting killed part but I do know through talking to a cousin that we did in fact have family that took part in the resistance and according to a book another more distant cousin wrote the part of Slovenia where our family was from was right in the middle of it. It was sadly in some ways a Civil War since some more distant branches collaborated unfortunately.

There was one, “The Fifth Offensive” starring Richard Burton as Tito, that certainly spared no expense when it came to blowing up surplus war ordinance.

I was honestly hoping for something that would be in Serbo-Croatian and or Slovene that would illustrate the divides that existed within Yugoslavia during that time period.

Ah, yeah, that was one of Drachinifel’s best yet. Easily to naval history what The Chieftain is to tanks and Ian McCollum to firearms. His piece on Samar is excellent but perhaps his best work is in the several pieces he’s done to recount the tragedy that was the Imperial Russian fleet and the Russo-Japanese War.

Concur that all produce good content and back it up with sources, etc. I also like some of Military History Visualized’s material as well. Sitting down with some coffee and watching/listening to Drach’s Sunday “Dry Dock” episodes is becoming a habit.

My remark on “sound bite history” is that the listed battles are the easy bar, and a movie about something else in WW2 has to get past those to even be considered as a Hollywood production. It hasn’t helped that most of them in the past decade with any sort of large budget have been cliche-ridden CGI fests. And I have trouble with those since my knowledge in the area makes me cringe even watching reviews or snippets.

I also concur that “Das Boot” is an excellent submarine film. But it’s foreign and also almost 40 years old now - pretty far from current Hollywood. We get stuff like “U-571” instead. (Which to be honest is also 20 years old.)

Only film about Yugoslav partisans that I can recall is “Battle of Neretva” (1969) which showed up on television every so often. Only actor I recall from it is Yul Brynner. (I am not counting the partisans from “Force 10 From Naverone”.)

Tim O’Brien is an EXCELLENT surrogate. Mike Bloomberg made an excellent hire there.

his response to the sexual harassment accusations:

1) somebody wrote a gag book as a birthday present for him. He did not write the jokes. He never said those things. Bernie is misrepresenting those statements.

2) Suits against Bloomberg for harassment were suits against Bloomberg LP, they didn’t accuse him personally. It was about people lower down in the company, but because it happened at work and the company is named after him his name appears on the paperwork. Nobody’s accused him specifically, individually, of having said or done those things. And most of the incidents were while he was mayor, so he wasn’t even at the company at the time.

on stop & frisk:

He has apologized. He will continue to apologize. It’s a stain on his record, he regrets it deeply, but it’s not representative of his overall character or his racial views. During his tenure as mayor he also diversified the police department, reduced incarceration by 40%, and massively increased the percentage of city contracts that went to minority-owned businesses.

Three brilliant, accomplished, formidable women, all of whom generally share progressive goals, but with just enough differences on how to accomplish them to lend some real spice to the debate, and three women who, I guarantee you, would agree to fight ferociously for whichever one of them happened to win. My preferred outcome: President Warren, Attorney General Harris, and Senate Majority Leader Klobuchar. You can mix them up according to your personal preferences. A shooting in the western German city of Hanau late Wednesday left several people dead and many injured, police sources confirmed. German newspaper Bild has reported that at least eight people have lost their lives, while five others were wounded.

The shooting took place at two shisha bars in different parts of the city, according to local media.

The perpetrators reportedly opened fire at the first shisha bar in Hanau’s downtown, killing three people. They then drove to the neighborhood of Kesselstadt and opened fire at the second shisha bar, where five people died.

Authorities are currently looking for the suspects, who are said to have fled the scene.

Hanau is a city of 100,000 inhabitants in the state of Hessen, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of the city of Frankfurt.

I do not love this administration, but I’m not yet ready to equate it with Hitler’s.

Trump said that the Nazis who marched at Charlottesville were good people.

He locks up innocent people.

Case closed.

Richard Grenell
Was almost a regular on Tucker Carlson’s show
And yes, the Ambassador that stated he want’ed to bolster right-wing communities in Europe

And no, there is absolutely nothing in Grenell’s past that qualifies him to be more than the spokesperson for the Director of National Intelligence

I’m not playing. I think they’re valid questions.

Sure you are. An honest reply would begin, “I think you’re wrong because…” Instead you’re starting from the assumption that you’re perfectly right and I’m completely wrong. Since nothing is going to change your mind, I refuse to play the justification game.

Loyalty to Dear Leader is the only relevant qualification for anything in Trumpworld.

Naturally that loyalty is only one way, but I can’t be bothered to feel any sympathy for the soulless Quislings who think they can deal with Trump and not get burned.

I wonder if CPB will just ignore this order too?

Fucking Rudy - Cyber security Czar.

Sometimes, typing the wrong letter for a website address means sending visitors to a 404 page. When you’re Rudy Giuliani, it means potentially sending hundreds of thousands of followers straight to a virus.

Hackers have been taking advantage of typos in tweets by the former New York City mayor, buying the mistyped domain names and redirecting visitors to a fake page designed to spread malware rather than to the original page that Giuliani had meant to type.

Hat tip to the politics channel for the El Goonish Shive Discord (invites available upon request, but be warned it’s a place where most who don’t like Bernie do it because he’s too far right):

Holy effing…!

I would say I hoped that this would destroy his candidacy but somehow I think his base considers this a feature rather than a bug.

I wonder if, late at night, when nobody else is around and Sanders is alone with his thoughts… if he wonders how the fuck he got here? Like how does a career back bencher with no real legislative accomplishments manage to be the nominal frontrunner for a major party presidential nomination at such an advanced age?

Yep Bernie is lower than Bloomberg for me at this point. Bernie knows that inter party challenges cripple incumbents chances.
