Texas School Board Meeting Live-Blogged

Science • Views: 3,688

It’s astounding that this is happening in 2009, but the Texas State Board of Education is actually considering passing a curriculum that will teach creationism in public school science classes. And Republican Governor Rick Perry has stacked the board with young earth creationists and pure idiots, including at least two people associated with the infamous Discovery Institute, so the outcome is far from certain. There are three days of hearings scheduled, with the final vote probably coming this Friday.

The Discovery Institute is pushing hard for this one because if Texas—the largest purchaser of textbooks in America—takes that big step back into the Dark Ages, the resulting changes in textbooks may well affect the way science is taught nationwide.

At the Houston Chronicle, Steve Schafersman live-blogged the proceedings today: Live Blogging of the State Board of Education Meeting, March 25-27.

On the pro-science side, we had distinguished scientists, researchers, and textbook authors. On the anti-evolution, pro-Dark Ages side, we had ministers, beauty queens, and Discovery Institute shill Casey Luskin.

It’s sad and infuriating that in so many states, the Republican Party is now dominated by fanatics who want to force their fundamentalist religious views on everyone’s children, and ruin science education in America.

3:00 - The current speaker is Austen Williams, whose affiliation is "Mrs. Arlington/Mrs. Texas." This beauty pagent model is in favor of teaching both S&W in high school. She said she had only been introduced to S&W last year, and it changed her life. What precisely she learned, she admitted during questioning, was the concept of irreducible complexity. She learned about the bacterial flagellum and how its interconnected parts cannot coexist in useful form outside of the complete structure, so the flagellum is "irreducibly complex." It was apparent that the lovely Ms. Williams has never been informed of the many refutations of this classic ID Creationist argument.

Grrr- this one is so debunked I can't believe the IDers still float it, but then, the IDers often prey on ignorance.

I'd be curious to see his definition of "both." Evolutionary theory has a lot of support material. The other side's argument is a random collection of debunked criticisms.

48 guitarguy  Wed, Mar 25, 2009 4:43:57pm

For what it’s worth, Mark Levin just tore a new one on a caller to his radio show. The caller commented on LA Governor Bobby Jindal allowing creationism/ID to be taught in schools.

Levin basically went on a semi rant about how all sides should be expressed in the classroom:

“What’s wrong with that? You gotta problem with that?”

The caller explained that he felt creationism should not be taught in a science class, and Levin went after him.

“Ehhh, don’t give me that crap about science class! You don’t get to say what should and shouldn’t be taught! I get to say it! You know what shouldn’t be taught? Bi-lingual-ism! And that global warming crap! THAT’s what shouldn’t be allowed in our schools!”

Levin’s an intelligent guy, but his attitude was a real turn-off. But I shouldn’t have been surprised. This is the same man who wrote lovingly about his deceased pet dog, ‘Sprite’. Yet he mocked and ridiculed Michael Savage’s love and affection for his own dog.

Karen Hewett and a group of five additional science teachers who represent STAT, the Science Teachers Association of Texas, appeared and asked the SBOE to adopt the science standards as written by the science writing panels. Karen Hewett is a past president of STAT. Testifying for her entire group, Karen said that S&W is not a scientific concept.

As was the case in Dover, I'm stunned a school board would not listen to the teachers and the other knowledgeable people brought in to form the standards. It really shows that the agenda trumps reason for them to ignore those who know the most about the subject being taught.

I don't know. Limbaugh supported Ben Stein's movies and slandered biology teachers as bigots ("not big tent people"); he's a creationist, for sure. Levin is a demagogue who is pandering to his base of listeners, so I'm less sure of him.

re: #126 Iron Fist

A list of attacks, especially any battles. A list of the casualties for both sides would also be interesting. Or maybe you define war, to be kind, as being overbroad.

Make no mistake. When I say that I can see the gun control issue bring about a Civil War, I mean a real war where people are shooting at each other. I think that the Military would likely fight on both sides of the line. I'm not sure which side would win, but I have no doubt that it would be bloody.

I see robust political discourse going on, with both sides trying to sway public opinion, and convince the voters that their side is right. This is not a war. It is a disagreement.

in that use of the term, you have a point. in the other that you deem possible, the military, even if they went 100% for suppression, which they likely wouldn't, is doomed. the enemy would be everywhere, and the logistics would fail almost immediately. without logistics, you don't have an Army.

So you are planning on a bombing? Or are you planning on shooting up a Baptist Church or something. Because that is what war is. Maybe you should read some of the history of the conflict in Northern Ireland. That is the best modern example of war between religious factions.

My point is that once these people get their particular religion taught as science, another group, pushing their own agenda will start teaching their own odd ball doctrine...

But I just have a hard time listening to liberals grow suddenly high-brow and Ivy League serious about the paranoid style of the American Right. Where were these people for the last eight years when abject paranoid hysteria consumed the left flank of liberalism and threatened to capsize the entire enterprise? There are certainly elements on the Right that are prone to such things, but there are also elements on the Left that are just as prone to it. I will stack Naomi Wolfe up against any John Bircher. Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky, the folks at ANSWER, Ward Churchill, are no less conspiratorial than your typical right-wing conspiracy theorist and some of them are not only worse, but far more accepted by the liberal establishment than their opposite numbers are by the conservative establishment.
....
But spare me the lectures if you can only find things to worry about to your right.

I think it would be tragic for any and all music with a religious bent to be removed from the schools. There are just so many beautiful and important pieces of music that kids would never get the pleasure to learn and perform.

But it's a completely different issue between art and science. Art being subjective, and science being objective, you just can't compare.

(#116)Constitutional scholar,

That would depend on the terms of debate, wouldn't it? I assume he is able to beat me on points on the topic of the Constitution. I might even agree with him that the Constitution is weak on preventing faith-based state-directed propaganda. Whether he is able to beat other Constitutional scholars would be another question, best left to those other scholars.

I could go toe to toe with him on the philosophy of science though, because he's apparently weak at that. I expect he hasn't done his homework on the basic science either. I'd have him making me sandwiches within the hour.

OT, but the "moderate" Paliterrorists are still glorifying terrorism:
PA TV Celebrates Coastal Road Massacre

Palestinian Media Watch has released a video report on the Palestinian Authority's television station full-length special devoted to the glorification of the most murderous attack on Israeli civilian in history: the 1978 Coastal Road massacre.
Terrorists from Lebanon and landed by Zodiac boats on a beach near Ma'agan Michael, north of Tel Aviv. They reached the Coastal Highway and commandeered a bus that was carrying Egged bus drivers and their families on a day outing.

The bus continued driving south on the Coastal Road (Highway 2) while the terrorists fired and threw grenades at passing cars, shot passengers and dumped at least one body out of the bus. An explosion set the bus on fire, killing 38 civilians, 13 of them children. 71 Israelis were wounded.

mark levin is as good as it gets.
the jerk calling in was all abt. throwing him off his game.
mark slammed the guy. he was not going to be put on the defensive.
he refused to take the bait. he was not going to sell out the i.d. people.
i felt it was on principle because the caller was an ass hole

after the break mark came back to say, i.d is nothing compared to the destruction the left is doing to our country.
and he said, if the guy had been a decent person he would have had a conversation w/ him.
that's my take from what i heard.
there's no way mark goes under the bus, for me, based on that little interaction.

I think it would be tragic for any and all music with a religious bent to be removed from the schools. There are just so many beautiful and important pieces of music that kids would never get the pleasure to learn and perform.

But it's a completely different issue between art and science. Art being subjective, and science being objective, you just can't compare.

Exactly. Without Ode to Joy, I don't know how many children would have stuck by their instruments. Though, the hymn came later than Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.

Excuse me?

Velociraptor was first found and described by paleontologist H. F. Osborn in Mongolia in 1924. About a dozen Velociraptor fossils have been found, including one who died in a battle to the death with Protoceratops and two hatchling Velociraptor skulls that were found near an oviraptorid nest in Mongolia (they may have been a meal). Fossils have been found in Mongolia, Russia, and China.

So many pieces of music come to mind, it's not even funny. And that's just music classes. Then there was the overwhelming amount of religious art in my humanities classes. It's true I've been out of high school for a very long time, but these are just a couple of examples of how religion is still very much allowed in high schools in the appropriate subjects. Religion is not now, nor will it ever be science and it doesn't belong in science classes.

But I think the point Wishing was making earlier was that opening this wedge for Christian creationism will let in other religious creation stories such as islam. And then you just might see science classes turning into a microcosm of the greater conflict we're currently engaged in overseas.

And they have killed whom, again?

They are the spiritual descendents of an obscurantism which has killed many millions; and where there is a shortage of scientists, they delay progress which kills millions more by the year.

So far, as far as I know, they have done everything in accordance with law and democracy. You may not agree with their position, you may even consider it laughable. You may think that they are lying (YEC says the world is only 6000 years old. This can't be backed up by any facts).

What they aren't doing is waging a religious war.

Wrong. They are using unethical tactics to browbeat their opponents. Misdirection and propaganda are tactics of warfare.

What are you suggesting, exactly? That their viewpoint should be made illegal? That they don't have the right to try and influence their fellow citizens through political discourse? Through winning votes (or losing them)?

They have every right, but their votes shouldn't count.

I've argued that decisions about science should be taken away from voters, and assigned to a separate branch of the state which is selected by their peers instead - the judicial branch. So IDers could say what they want; but what they say should have no influence on research, textbooks, or educational standards.

In a sense, I think it's like the socialists on the left who keep trying the same failed policies thinking, "well, the socialism will work this time because we're going to try it a different way". The right doesn't want to learn the lessons of Kansas- they keep plugging along, thinking this attempt is different and it will work.

I am again reminded of Thomas Sowell's Conflict of Visions. There is two mindsets, constrained and unconstrained, and you can find them in both political parties. The creationists are our unconstrained albatrosses.

That graph was the second-by-second response of a focus group to Obama's press conference.

There were a bunch of people in a room with controls in their hands that have dials on them that they turn to register their response in real time. It has nothing to do with poll responses.

mark levin is as good as it gets.
the jerk calling in was all abt. throwing him off his game.
mark slammed the guy. he was not going to be put on the defensive.
he refused to take the bait. he was not going to sell out the i.d. people.
i felt it was on principle because the caller was an ass hole

after the break mark came back to say, i.d is nothing compared to the destruction the left is doing to our country.
and he said, if the guy had been a decent person he would have had a conversation w/ him.
that's my take from what i heard.
there's no way mark goes under the bus, for me, based on that little interaction.

OT. The O'Reilly Factor pollster Frank Luntz is a sham. Luntz shows a graph of GOP and DEM responses to a message. And we are supposed to believe that the listener's responses can be measured and then charted? No votes mind you. No interviews mind you. Just a silly made up graph. IMHO.

Each person in the group has a little box with a knob they can turn up or down as they watch to track how much they like or dislike what they are watching. That all feeds into the computer that graphs the chart. It's a device commonly used in focus groups.

No: it's right because it's unconstitutional. The Constitution wasn't written by prophets, you know.

The Constitution didn't predict that science would throw back the limits of ignorance to this extent. It created an opening where unfalsifiable doctrine could be forced into classrooms as long as it didn't mention the word with a capital G. Guess what; now the creationists are exploiting this loophole. I propose to close it.

re: #48 guitarguy

Bummer. Everyone who is fighting Obama with the most intensity are throwing it all away on this issue. They might as well be part of his cabinet. The Republicans have had it. The country is going to be plucked by the socialists like a cluster of grapes all because these guys insist that everyone's children are instilled with their ignorance. Worse yet, they're opening the door and letting radical Islam right in. Levin's defense of the Constitution has become meaningless.

Heavenly Father, the minions of deception are at work amongst us. They work to deceive us as to the truth You make manifest in your Creation. They seek to confine Your Majesty to the ancient texts of human writers and defy all attempts to understand the message you have imprinted on Your Universe and, especially on this Earth. They seek to confine You to their narrow interpretations and refuse to admit that You and Your Creation are far grander than their feeble understanding can allow.

Help us confound these, the deceived and the deceiving. Help us teach our children to understand Your Creation as You Created it by studying that Creation with the minds you gave them. Let them experience the wonders of Your World and, as Your children, grow in wisdom. This we pray.

He also asked them to reject the unscientific amendments made in January to the standards and revert to the original language. Then he presented an inch-thick collection of statements and letters from national and state science associations that support these requests. Perhaps the most important letter was from the American Association for the Advancement of Science which had signatures of dozens of the top scientists in Texas, including some Noble Laureates.

WTF?

You read me right. Creationist votes concerning science shouldn't count.

Science, like a court of law, has an objective value beyond the whims of an electorate. The voters aren't, as a group, smart enough to judge objective facts. This isn't their fault, and even smart people can make mistakes; but that is why some decisions, concerning the implications of law, are abstracted away from them.

You may be aware that the Founding Fathers were no fans of democracy; they preferred a feudal, or Roman Republican, model which pitted factions against one another. Right now our system is too democratic, and is failing to preserve our liberties.

I suppose you think courtrooms should be run as democracies too. When they nab a suspect, why wait for a deliberative verdict? He's a bad guy with some priors. Get a rope! 67% of the town can't all be wrong...

I was listening to Mark Levin and he just punished a militant evolutionist caller who had a problem with Bobby Jindal trying to have creation taught along with evolution.
Mark didn't say which side he was on but he is clearly fed up with this pointless debate. He is totally in favor of teaching both.

Creationism, for the umpteenth time, is religious dogma, not empirical science, and as such does NOT belong in public high school science class.

A Big fat elderly woman - I'm sure it's captivating. It's just grossly inappropriate. There is more and more sex ed curriculum on the web that students could access. My son has to do a series of math exercises every night at a site called Study Island which forwards the results to the teacher. I think that would be a very appropriate method of teaching sex ed as well.

My favorite line, from my mother's parents, of blessed memory.

I ask them, how they managed to stay together for as long as they did:

"Well," Pa said, "I wouldn't give her the satisfaction of leaving."

Ma said, "And I wouldn't dare inflict him on another woman."

They loved each other through the Great Depression (children of immigrants, both, growing up in coal country), WWII (where he went overseas and lost his brother, she lost her brother, too), Vietnam (lost their oldest son there), until she died of cancer in 1986. He passed in '99 or thereabouts, and wept for her every day of his life. No one I knew fought or loved like they did.

Does this mean the creationists would allow the Great Cobra Hindu creation myth?

Before time began there was no heaven, no earth and no space between. A vast dark ocean washed upon the shores of nothingness and licked the edges of night. A giant cobra floated on the waters. Asleep within its endless coils lay the Lord Vishnu. He was watched over by the mighty serpent. Everything was so peaceful and silent that Vishnu slept undisturbed by dreams or motion.

Vishnu
From the depths a humming sound began to tremble, Om. It grew and spread, filling the emptiness and throbbing with energy. The night had ended. Vishnu awoke. As the dawn began to break, from Vishnu's navel grew a magnificent lotus flower. In the middle of the blossom sat Vishnu's servant, Brahma. He awaited the Lord's command.

Vishnu spoke to his servant: 'It is time to begin.' Brahma bowed. Vishnu commanded: 'Create the world.'

re: #351 Zimriel

The courts should never make policy decisions. Ever.

It's not their job.

Policy (including science and technology policy) belongs to the elected branches.

The courts should never make policy decisions. Ever.

It's not their job.

Policy (including science and technology policy) belongs to the elected branches.

Oh - "policy". My apologies. I was vague when I said "decisions". I was not referring to policy decisions - but to decisions on standards.

Scientific findings are not subject to voters anyway. No-one can take a paper about DNA, wave it before Congress, and demand it be un-published. They can however demand it not be taught. That's a design flaw in the Constitution.

And I wouldn't put this onus on the courts, but in a parallel system of state-recognised "science courts", elected by other scientists.

An Economist article says groups consistently make better decisions than individuals ONLY IF each individual researches the information for himself and doesn't succumb to group think.
Maybe this is the great shaking out process that will reveal that most Republicans do not understand the issue of teaching creationism in the science classroom.

I didn't fully understand the implications because on the surface it can seem rather harmless, more like a tolerance issues - but it's quite dangerous. Light is a great sanitizer.

You can't teach music and not teach Bach, and you can't teach Bach without somehow dealing with religion. He considered music to be a form of worship in general, and most of his music was explicitly religious. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is probably the most recognized song of any form in Western Civilization, and that is but one of Bach's many masterworks.

And even Bach is just one (extremely prolific) composer. Until the mid to late ninteenth century music was largely religious in nature, at least in Western culture.

Music in Bali is still 100 percent religiously themed.

Reminds me of a game of connection one of my teachers used to love to play:

All Western music is classical music;

But all classical music is really German folk-music;

But all German folk-music is merely a re-working of gypsy music;

But all gypsy music is based in Indian music.

And so, Bach should be played on the sitar.

What People Can learn From How Animals make Collective Decisions.

Condorcet’s theory describes consensus decisions, outlining how democratic decisions tend to outperform dictatorial ones. If each member of a jury has only partial information, the majority decision is more likely to be correct than a decision arrived at by an individual juror. Moreover, the probability of a correct decision increases with the size of the jury. But things become more complicated when information is shared before a vote is taken. People then have to evaluate the information before making a collective decision. This is what bees do, and they do it rather well, according to Christian List of the London School of Economics, who has studied group decision-making in humans and animals along with Larissa Conradt of the University of Sussex, in England.

My side is liberty too. I have simply lost faith in the ability of democracy to safeguard liberty. A reaction toward a little less democracy will restore some of those liberties, in my opinion.

Besides, a lot of policy is already set by unelected, permanent civil services. That's a good thing! The problem is (1) it's still subject to "political interference" (i.e., democracy used as designed) and (2) it's a largely informal system, loosely attached to the executive branch, a (mostly) elected office.

Lovely idea but it will not fly. I've been wrestling with this for quite some time and cannot come up with a title/slogan that wouldn't sound like hokum to a jaded American Public. We, the People, are going to have to take over one of our established parties if we are going to save our Republic.

What you are proposing however is bordering on technocracy, the way the left is getting to statism. "Don't bother your pretty little head about science, we'll take care of those decisions for you..."

The average american will make the right decision when given the facts, witness the recent change to purple in Kansas due to these very issues.

What's needed is better science reporting, not a cabal of technocrats. That's going to happen over the next few years because it really must due to the large scale changes coming in science and technology.

But when you say you want him to FAIL, even if you try to qualify it by saying "if his policies hurt America I want him to fail," you are absolutely losing the support of the middle, who do NOT want any American president to fail.

The FAIL here is on the GOP side, and they're doubling down on it. Bobby Jindal came out last night defending this crap, and now Fred Thompson is doing it too.

I agree 100%. There are many more important issues that these people could be focused on. I don't agree with the Young Earth Creationists on anything, really, though I believe that the Universe was ultimately created by God. I would think that the revisionism in history class would be more important to Conservatives, both religious conservatives and non-religious ones. I've recounted before how one of my students, a bright, talented kid, did not know that the Cold War even happened. He thought I was talking about something out of science fiction when I described the MX-Peacekeeper, and barely knew that Reagan was a President back when he was a small child.

He, of course, knew nothing of substance about the Soviet Union, or why Reagan would have described it as an "Evil Empire". The whole context of the last half of the 20th Century was distilled into America was the bad guy in Vietnam.

This is a problem. A huge probem. Kids aren't being taught how to think for themselves, nor are they being given the necessary foundations on how to do things like vote. Even when I was in high school, Civics was considered a "wasted" class. I was encouraged to take Civics during summer school to get it out of the way of more important classes. In retrospect that is pretty appalling.

Supposedly, a number of the jacqueries of the Middle Ages could be laid to the effects of ergot poisoning--which supposedly is somewhat akin to the effects of a bad LSD trip.

Who knows--maybe it's making a comeback, just as some diseases previously thought to have been vanquished have been reappearing in the wake of large numbers of people foregoing vaccinations.

It may also be an evolutionary (to bring this thread back around) thing. It might well be that the complexity of the environment we have created, and the tools we have developed, have exceeded the level of complexity manageable by the average brain. Think about it - our best and most important advances are the result of the genius of others - that is, the world's most important and amazing structures are the result of first-class intellects, which are necessarily rare. These advances, however, make living somewhat easier (biologically), thus increasing our numbers without requiring a corresponding increase in evolutionary fitness.

It may be that we as a species have reached the point where our technology has long since outstripped the average level of intelligence, and so people, faced with a world they do not understand, upon which they are wholly dependent, and to which they can make no real contribution, simply go mad, in one form or degree or another.

Seattle's Mayor Greg "Santa's gonna' drown" Nickels just won't give up his obsession with my guns.

Seattle gun ban

The ego of Settle mayor Greg Nickels knows no bounds. The Weekly reports that Nickles' gun ban on city parks and property will begin in May despite advice from the Attorney General that the ban is unconstitutional. Rob McKenna's office released this statement:
"Our office's opinion clearly states that state law pre-empts a city's authority to enact local laws that prohibit the possession of firearms on city property or in city-owned facilities. Moving forward with the firearms rule could subject the city to legal challenges from private citizens."

The city held a public meeting on this issue in December - the mayor didn't bother to show up - but 150 citizens did. They were overwhelmingly against the ban. But, Nickels' desire to appease the anti-gun zealots far outweighs his desire to represent his constituents.

China: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (you know that gal married to the Saudi hireling) crawled to Beijing to tell the party bosses that human rights don't matter. Our "relationship" is more important than freedom and human dignity.

Beijing's response? A staged military confrontation with an unarmed US Navy vessel; continued screw-America currency cheating; a renewed crackdown on dissidents and, yesterday, a call for a new global currency to replace the dollar.

There is also the serious issue that wanting the President to fail in these difficult times means that you hope everything gets worse for America. Love Obama or hate him, if he fails as president, then this country will suffer for it.

The short form of it is that Republicans who say this would rather have America suffer for their own political gain then America succeed under someone else. To say that this is unpatriotic would be an understatement. It shows where these people place their priorities and frankly means that they serve themselves before they serve America.

OT: This is what Wiki says about Avanti's ship, Newport News CA-148(A Hvy Cruiser, as I surmised from the CA), and his actual time in 'Nam.....doesn't mention blowing Sampans:

1 September 1967, Commander Second Fleet shifted his flag to Springfield, and Newport News departed Norfolk 5 September for a six month deployment to Southeast Asia. Arriving Da Nang, South Vietnam, on the morning of 9 October, she became the flagship of ComCruDesFlot 3. That night, at 2300, under her new call sign "Thunder," she fired her eight inch rifles for the first time in anger against shore targets in North Vietnam as part of Operation Sea Dragon. For years, her powerful guns had served as a major force to keep the peace. Now her strength served well in war during the following months in providing interdiction fire north of the Demilitarized Zone and naval gunfire support for American allied troops in South Vietnam.

Newport News spent some 50 days patrolling the coast of North Vietnam as part of Operation Sea Dragon – the Navy’s effort to destroy waterborne logistics craft as well as military supply routes ashore in North Vietnam. During this period, the ship conducted 156 strikes against enemy targets and, in the execution of these strikes, 325 North Vietnamese coastal defense sites were taken under fire. Combined, 7411 rounds of high explosive ammunition were expended by the ship during Operation Sea Dragon. According to spotters’ reports, Newport News sank 17 waterborne logistics craft, damaged another 14 and destroyed several enemy bunker and radar sites. In harassment and interdiction strike missions she all but halted the enemy’s rebuilding efforts as she damaged bridges, barges, trucks and roads and caused heavy ruin and raging fires in widespread areas. The ship was subjected to hostile fire on several occasions, but each time countered effectively and silenced the enemy batteries. On 19 December 1967, Newport News exchanged fire with 20-28 separate shore batteries, simultaneously, off the coast of North Vietnam. During the short period of this engagement, over 300 enemy rounds bracketed the cruiser’s position, but ship handling by Captain McCarty prevented any direct hits. This encounter led American forward observers to nickname Newport News “The Gray Ghost from the East Coast,” a moniker she retained throughout her three Vietnam deployments.[3].

Subsequent to the end of Operation Sea Dragon and for the remaining several months of this deployment, Newport News participated in Naval Gunfire Support operations near the DMZ (The Demilitarized Zone). In support of Third Marine Division forces on the beach, the ship fired around the clock for periods sometimes lasting several weeks in succession. On station near the DMZ, Newport News was normally in sight of land and crewmembers could frequently see and hear, first hand, the effect of their efforts on enemy positions.

During the total period of this deployment, Newport News expended a record 59,241 rounds of high-explosive ammunition, while conducting a total of 239 observed and 602 unobserved missions against the enemy. She came under fire of enemy coastal defense batteries on seventeen separate occasions, was frequently straffed with shrapnel, but never suffering a direct hit.

The cruiser departed Subic Bay on 21 April and arrived at her homeport of Norfolk, Virginia on 13 May 1968, via the Panama Canal.

The GOP talking point of the day is that there's nothing wrong with wanting Barack Obama to fail.

This is so wrong-headed I don't even know where to start.

Criticize him, show where he's wrong, point out the flaws in his policies, even mock the guy for his reliance on a teleprompter.

The Republican Party is in denial, and refusing to look at the real problems that have led to losing the last two major elections.

In the service there is the notion of "respect the uniform if not the man." I suppose "loyal opposition" went out the window...

I am not Obama's biggest fan, but I would rather see him do well against the threats this nation faces than fail.

The Discovery Institute is pushing hard for this one because if Texas—the largest purchaser of textbooks in America—takes that big step back into the Dark Ages, the resulting changes in textbooks may well affect the way science is taught nationwide.

This is exactly why Mel and Norma Gabler did what they did. They knew that they could influence textbooks across America.

re: #528 Thanos

What you are proposing however is bordering on technocracy, the way the left is getting to statism. "Don't bother your pretty little head about science, we'll take care of those decisions for you..."

This exactly sums up my attitude, except for the "pretty" part. Lots of creationists are male and/or donkey-butt ugly. And don't get me started on the topic of hairspray...

The average american will make the right decision when given the facts, witness the recent change to purple in Kansas due to these very issues.

Like the median 50th and 51st votes out of 100 were votes for Obama? Right, "given the facts"... so:

What's needed is better science reporting, not a cabal of technocrats. That's going to happen over the next few years because it really must due to the large scale changes coming in science and technology.

What good is science reporting to people who don't, or can't, read it? How can voters be "given the facts" when the people giving the facts, and the facts themselves, aren't out to flatter the voters. The liberal solution is to force facts into the voters so that they can be "well-informed". As well try preaching to your cat.

I'm more magnanimous; I allow the peoples' ignorant opinions about the Great Green Arkleseizure. I just think these opinions shouldn't be allowed to affect the foundational axioms of our state. What policies should be followed, based on these axioms, can remain in the hands of democracy. (For the sake of argument.)

Yours was the great hope of the 2000s: once people compare our way of life with their own, surely they will choose of their own free will to become More Like Us. I don't have any such faith in human nature. Libertarians read Ayn Rand; conservatives play BioShock.

Jonathan Swift was right: humans are, by nature, a selfish, grasping, unintelligent clan of chimpanzee. Creationists get around this by claiming that we're the image of God, which is hardly a flattery to God, and then they act like the most devious apes in the cage. By all means listen to their hooting and offer them a banana if they're hungry, but by no means let them write your science books for you.

Fiscal conservatives have been marginalized for long enough. It's time we stood up and said we're no longer willing to be held hostage by the religious passions of our so-called conservative fellows. They can stay if they'd like, but their religious passions belong at church, not in the party because their fervency is repelling too many people away, including other conservatives, and it's costing America by leading us to government power being in the hands of socialists. This has to stop, and stop now.

I agree, but an unholy deal was made a while back. Can you imagine the rage of the self righteous should they be thrown under the bus by those who are merely trying to save the Republic? Hell hath no fury...

Yes it's very distressing.

One of the easiest and most positive things we can do is to challenge the
liberal left (and the floundering right) is to educate those around us.

Tell them why they are wrong. Ask them to support their beliefs when the counter with meaningless media sound bytes because that is really all they have and they cannot support these ideas when challenged.

There are those that will not be swayed, but there are also those that will when they honestly assess their beliefs. There are also those that will
otherwise have been silent and speak up when they see others doing so.

This country is mostly center right, smart, hard working and want to keep their money.

Wake them up!

re: #556 Iron Fist

But do you accept that humans and great apes evolutionarily diverged from ancient common hominid ancestors, as the artifactual retroviral DNA evidence clearly shows, Iron?

re: #641 buzzsawmonkey

It may perhaps be unpopular in this thread to say it, but one of the greatest fallacies of modern society is the notion that human beings are rational. They are not.

Human beings are capable of rationality, if trained in the exercise of rational thought and given the tools to do so. But we are also creatures of our emotions, our dreams, our hormones and urges, etc.--which are not rational and which are only intermittently, and by an effort of will, controllable by the rational portion of the mind.

My late father, a chemist and physicist, once observed to me that he and his colleagues used to believe in their youth that rationality would ultimately vanquish the non-rational aspect of human behavior. "We were wrong," he said to me. "If you try to eliminate the non-rational with the rational, all you get is bad science."

What he meant by this was that if repressed, the non-rational aspect of the human animal would attach itself to the putatively rational--and you would get conspiracy theories about chem trails, UFOs, carcinogenic cell phones, etc. The rational and the non-rational would meld, and the non-rational would corrupt the rational.

The non-rational, he said, was like a universal solvent--something which dissolves anything it touches. The challenge with a universal solvent is to find the vessel that could contain it safely, and allow it to be harnessed for social use. The only vessel which had ever been found to safely contain human non-rationality so that it could harnessed for social good was--religion. Not always perfectly; there have been splashes, spills, breakages and misuse over the centuries. But it still is the only vessel which can even somewhat reliably contain and harness the non-rational impulses of the human being.

This may not be popular to post in an ID thread, but it is all the more necessary to post for that reason. He favored--and I agree--strict separation of the rational (science) from the non-rational, so that both could flourish productively according to their natures, and could not corrupt each other.

That's pretty damned bright; "universal solvent" is an excellent image for the irrational (and yet necessary) component of our minds.

Wow.

Cut, copy, and paste.

Lots to study here. Thanks and an upding.

Also- a friend of mine told me years ago I couldn't be a politician because I had too much integrity. Later, another friend, who is politically active, told me I would never get anywhere in politics because I'm not purchasable (think tfk's evil money cult). If you don't kiss up to special interests, you don't get the money. I'm not interested in selling out to lobbyists.

Oh, you're better than me. I'd take their money. And then I'd take money from their opponents. I'd return the different to the higher bidder and judge the case on its merits.

But the reason I'd never win is simple. "You pathetic apes disgust me. I can't believe the nonsense you're trying to pull. You have no personal responsibility, and your dress sense is most un-fabulous. VOTE FOR ZIMRIEL -all you primitive screw-heads"

re: #654 Iron Fist

Ah, you mean have I renounced Satan and all of his works? You see, that is why, for you, evolution is a religious faith. Sharmuta complained earlier about having to face a "purity test". And now you present me with your purity test. It is not enough that I disagree with the Young Earth Creationists, or that I agree that this shouldn't be taught in a science class. You bark out your own dogma and require that I conform to your faith.

Non servium.

Nope; faith is that which is held in the ABSENCE of empirical evidence; I am asking you whether or not you accept its PRESENCE.

Big honking difference.

Homo sapiens are more violent and selfish than chimpanzees... IMO. We are quite the aggressive primates. Well, so are baboons... but they never figured out how to walk upright, so we beat them too.

Burroughs, Coming of the Purple Better One":

“Ladies and gentlemen it is my coveted privilege and deep honor to introduce to you the distinguished Senator and former Justice of the Supreme Court Homer Mandrill known to his many friends as the Purple Better One. No doubt most of you are familiar with a book called African Genesis written by Robert Ardrey a native son of Chicago and I may add a true son of America. I quote from Mr. Ardrey’s penetrating work: ‘When I was a boy in Chicago I attended the Sunday School of a neighborhood Presbyterian church. I recall our Wednesday-night meetings with the simplest nostalgia. We would meet in the basement. There would be a short prayer and a shorter benediction. And we would turn out all the lights and in total darkness hit each other with chairs.’
“Mr. Ardrey’s early training tempered his character to face and make known the truth about the origins and nature of mankind. ‘Not in innocence and not in Asia was mankind born. The home of our fathers was the African highland on a sky-swept savannah glowing with menace. The most significant of all our gifts was the legacy bequeathed us by our immediate forebears a race of terrestrial, flesh-eating killer apes . . . Raymond A. Dart of the University Of Johannesburg was
the strident voice from South Africa that would prove the southern ape to be the human ancestor. Dart put forward the simple thesis that Man emerged from the anthropoid background for one reason only: because he was a killer. A rock, a stick, a heavy bone was to our ancestral killer ape the margin of survival . . .And he said that since we had tried everything else we might in last resort try the truth . . .Man’s original nature imposes itself on any human solution.’
“The aggressive southern ape suh, glowing with menace, fought your battles on the perilous veldts of Africa 500,000 years ago. Had he not done so you would not be living here in this great city in this great land of America raising your happy families in peace and prosperity. Who more fitted to represent our glorious Simian heritage than Homer Mandrill himself a descendant of that illustrious line? Who else can restore to this nation the spirit of true conservatism that imposes itself on any human solution? What candidate is better fitted for the highest office in the land at a time when this great republic is threatened by enemies foreign and domestic? Actually, there can be only one candidate: The Purple Batter One your future President.”
To “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” an American flag is drawn aside revealing a purple-assed mandrill (thunderous applause). Led to the mike by Secret Service men in dark suits that bulge suggestively here and there the Purple Better One blinks in bewilderment.

I won't disown Obama - yet
Posted By: Daniel Hannan
at Mar 22, 2009

Several of you are pestering me to turn against Barack Obama. "C'mon, Tory boy", you cry, "still think he's the messiah?"

There's no point in repeating that my support for the man was faute-de-mieux, that I strongly supported GOP Congressional candidates and that, far from believing Obama was the messiah, I kept citing the millenarianism of his supporters as one of the main arguments against him. This is a blog, after all, and blogs allow no shades of gray. Once I had declared for him, qualified as my declaration was, I became an "Obamaniac" - which attitude, by the way, neatly demonstrates the with-us-or-against-us bellicosity that has put so many Republicans off their party.

So, have I changed my mind? Well, I won't deny that Obama has done plenty of irritating things, ranging from the idiotic stimulus package to the way he dissed the Prime Minister (yes, I know the man's a clot, Mr President, but he's our clot; and, tired as you may have been, I suspect the Royal Marines in their Forward Operating Bases in Helmand, fighting a war that few of your allies will touch, are pretty drowsy too).

On the other hand, the US remains more popular than it has been for years, and Obama's own approval ratings, though fallen, are well above the vote he received in November.

The only fair answer I can give is that it's too early to say. As Andrew Sullivan puts it in today's Sunday Times:

In an age of 24-hour news channels, millions of blogs and columnists vying to stay above the bloggerrhoeic tide, there is a real urge to make a clear and instant judgment.

I'm not going to do it, because, two months after a president has taken office in the middle of a global financial and economic crisis, as he grapples with two unending wars and a battered constitution, the whole idea of a definitive judgment is loopy. It's also likely to be wrong. If you had judged the last Bush administration at this point, you would have said it was much better than expected.

I can't put it better any better than that. Sorry, guys: you'll have to come back and ask me in few months' time.

Back to the main topic...

It is a great sign of how anti-intellectual has this country is that a beauty contestant or a local preacher (as in not a scientist) gets the same footing as a science professor in any sort of science debate?

How folksy!

How stupid.

Call me elitist and arrogant - I really don't care, but Miss Creation and Rev. Bob do not have the qualifications to render an opinion. They should be firmly told to show a little respect by shutting up.

I am very tired of the resentment this nation feels towards those who have actually taken the time to learn something and know what they are talking about. It is frankly an insult. The scientific community should not be treated like supplicants. Our technology, economy, military strength, agriculture and medicine rest on the scientific community.

I have frequently had a certain Ann Rand thought. Imagine if all the techies and scientists told all of those good folksy people to run all of their own tech, treat their own wounds and build their own buildings (let alone power them). Let all of the congressmen chase their fanciful charlatan science dreams, like psychic warriors, anti grav saucers and perpetual motion... Let all of the people from Wall Street who want to lecture us that economic "realities" trump the laws of physics, chemistry or biology (and we listen and do nothing). Let all of the preachers lecture us about their biblical "realities" trumping the laws of science (and we listen and do nothing).

Ahhh then we wait a few years for the Chinese to take over...

The reason we don't do it, is because we have to live here too - even with morons like the ones in Texas.

re: #575 LudwigVanQuixote

There is also the serious issue that wanting the President to fail in these difficult times means that you hope everything gets worse for America. Love Obama or hate him, if he fails as president, then this country will suffer for it.

The short form of it is that Republicans who say this would rather have America suffer for their own political gain then America succeed under someone else. To say that this is unpatriotic would be an understatement. It shows where these people place their priorities and frankly means that they serve themselves before they serve America.

Dare I say that this is a disqualification from office?

Stop stop STOP. Since when is it that wanting Obama to fail means that you want America to fail? My friend, we are a nation of laws, not men. Equating Obama with the nation is what the Democrats misguidedly do in their cultish thralldom.

Obama has awful schemes on American and I want him to fail at them: I want him to be strong-armed into accepting a conservative agenda, or at least into compromising with it. I want him to fail on socializing health care, punishing industry and consumers with climate control taxes, and handing us over to our enemies abroad. He comes into office with big ideas about how he's going to "heal" us and "change" us and transform the world. I want the bastard to fail at all this and cave to the Paul Ryans and Michele Bachmanns. I want David Petraeus to thrash him into breaking his promises to get us out of Iraq by some date on the calendar, and I want him to fail on his dumbass pledge to meet personally, without preconditions, with the worst tyrants on the planet. I want him busted out of office by 2012 at the latest with an EPIC FAIL sign taped to his back while Democrats wail and gnash their teeth and America wipes its brow and says "Phew! Close call."

It’s sad and infuriating that in so many states, the Republican Party is now dominated by fanatics who want to ... ruin science education in America.

...[a]nd destroy any chance of even running a successful liberal Republican in 2012. While it's quite true that I am no fan of the GOP, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Democrats under Obama are on a slippery slope. Guiliani was and continued to be *my* choice for POTUS till the bitter end. The kind of PR that will be generated by this creationist nonsense will wreak havoc on the GOP come election time. Still, however, the worst part of all this is the dumbing down of America's kids, and the continual blurring of the separation of church and state.

Creationists, at least the ones I know, would be horrified if they realized they were opening the door to Islam being taught to their children. They are honestly ignorant, not stupid.
The stupidity comes in when they refuse to do their own research, but rather accept the Pastor's word for it.

They're perfectly happy, though, to insist that their religion should be taught to my children. Screw 'em. I mean that in the nicest possible way.

The kids do actually like to be able to ask teachers questions, though. When I was teaching at Catholic middle school, the math teacher/VP did sex ed in snippets through the year, and sometimes they'd bring things into my class. Unless I was really sure of the answer, I usually directed them to the science teacher. (She loved me.)

You make the mistake of thinking that the average voter wants to read a long essay about just exactly what "fail" means. Fail means fail. Obama succeeds at being president if in the end his administration is judged a success, even if that success came as a result of his being forced off agenda when it comes to his numerous unreasonable schemes. He succeeds if the economy recovers, even if the path to recovery leads through defeats in Congress for some of his tax "reforms" or his plan to nationalize health care.

People know what "succeed" means. It's nothing subtle, and it has little to do with success at carrying through the plan you start with. I succeed in a chess game, even if events force me way off my game plan, if I somehow or other scramble and claw my way to a win.

In this simple, plain-english sense, I hope Obama succeeds. I believe that he cannot succeed unless most of his plans are never enacted, or enacted with major revisions, checks, and balances. I fear the consequences of adapting those plans. But if they do get enacted, I'd rather they not drag his presidency and our nation down into ruin. Instead, I hope that he'll make adjustments in the game plan as their unintended and unhappy consequences show up, and somehow or other scramble and save his presidency and our asses.

To me it is just beyond stupid to teach this bone-headed crap in schools.

Not that I like O, but he is absolutely right when he says that America is falling behind in educating its children, particularly in the critical areas of science and math. Further, if we really want to see the end of cancer or significant reductions in other diseases, this will require high levels of scientific and particularly biological literacy... all if which is soundly grounded on DNA, genetics and the evolutionary principals behind life.

If you want to teach creationism, keep it in the churches where it belongs, but don't expect your kids get farther than baristas in their lives.
