This is the core of it, and has been for damn near a decade. The thing is, the people most in favor of profiling really seem to:

a. want profiling for profiling’s sake, as a sort of ‘up yours’ to imaginary political correctness, and

b. are increasingly resistant to any sort of airport security that might inconvenience anyone they themselves wouldn’t profile.

What’s Nat’l Second got to do with it?

Is that a race horse?

7 golgoth  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 6:25:46pm

Can I just say, I don’t give a f—- what she spouts.

She isn’t bringing to light anything of importance, her ideas have been more than adequately proven to be biased and politically charged, and her knowledge of anything outside of a beauty contest is limited.

Why should we care what her tweets are? She isnt running for office (yet), and when she does then hit her full force. Until then STOP FEEDING THE TROLL.

63 Tiny alien kittens are watching you  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 6:54:13pm

Sorry for the early OT:

Tony Perkins the president of the “Family Research Council” has written an article that says that Blacks and Hispanics are too bigoted to serve alongside openly gay soldiers. Since (according to him) they will leave the military in massive numbers if “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” is repealed, that means we will have to bring back the draft..

No really, I’m serious, I wish it was just a very bad and tasteless joke, but it isn’t.

He even pre-emptively disputes the findings of the yet to be released survey of military members feelings about Gays serving openly and calls on Congress to disbelieve it’s findings for various non-sensical reasons.

Seems a bit strange to be advocating continuing discrimination against Gays for Racist and Foreignly Motivated Nationalistic reasons doesn’t it? Is it just me or does that seem to reek of clutching at straws? Straws that you have completely disavowed and distanced yourself from in earlier writings to boot.

My Gracious God, I hope he finds some pity for Tony Perkins when he comes to judgment. (really, I do)

64 Walking Spanish Down the Hall  Fri, Nov 19, 2010 6:54:21pm

Profiling has to be visual to work quickly, so we’re limited to external factors like skin colour, hair colour, clothing, carried paraphernalia, and group association. Well trained observers can go beyond that to movement, attitude and silent communication between people.

Only one of these processes has a chance of success and can avoid unwarranted bigotry.

re: #60 Varek Raith

Wouldn’t work here.
We have many, many more times the number of people going through our airports.

Numbers:

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association says that there are, on average, between 25,000 and 30,000 passenger flights in the US per day. ([Link: natca.org…] Let’s estimate conservatively and pick 25,000 as our number.

Estimate that each airplane on average has 20 rows of people. (Yeah, some planes are much, much bigger, but the majority of planes are small.) Further guess that each row can hold 5 people on average. Then make a guess that on average a flight is 75% full, you get:

25,000 * 20 * 5 * 0.75 = 1,500,000 people per day

During burst periods (like Thanksgiving) the news is filled with reports that the airline expect to well exceed 2 million people each day, so 1.5 million on a normal day is probably not too bad a guess.

It works at a smallish airport where the flights are staggered throughout the day. The major US airports serve 4 or 5 times more passengers and have large numbers of flights leaving within minutes of each other during peak times.

re: #50 PhillyPretzel

As I said in a thread a while ago (a week or longer), “Let us take a page out of the EL-AL book.” It seems to work pretty well in Israel.

This is Wiki’s information on El Al’s airport procedures. I’m not sure that this process will find favor with people who find the current TSA procedure unbearably invasive or inappropriate. Bolding is mine.

Passengers are asked to report three hours before departure. All El Al terminals around the world are closely monitored for security. There are plain-clothes agents and fully armed police or military personnel who patrol the premises for explosives, suspicious behavior, and other threats. Inside the terminal, passengers and their baggage are checked by a trained team. El Al security procedures require that all passengers be interviewed individually prior to boarding, allowing El Al staff to identify possible security threats. Passengers will be asked questions about where they are coming from, the reason for their trip, their job or occupation, and whether they have packed their bags themselves. The likelihood of potential terrorists remaining calm under such questioning is believed to be low (see microexpression).[38]

At the check-in counter, passengers’ passports and tickets are closely examined. A ticket without a sticker from the security checkers will not be accepted. At passport control passengers’ names are checked against information from the FBI, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Scotland Yard, Shin Bet, and Interpol databases. Luggage is screened and sometimes hand searched. In addition, bags are put through a decompression chamber simulating pressures during flight that could trigger explosives.[39] El Al is the only airline in the world that passes all luggage through such a chamber.[40] Even at overseas airports, El Al security agents conduct all luggage searches personally, even if they are supervised by government or private security firms.[41]

Israel has two civilian airports to worry about.

They also do all the security at their own terminals worldwide, but still, a very small operation compared to US airlines.

I don’t think most of the people harping on ‘profiling’ can really explain what it would consist of, or what kind of use it would be to us.

The concept of terrorists ‘changing up’ with their choice of operatives to elude the profilers doesn’t occur to them, apparently.

Nothing much, apparently.

Other than - the chance of someone wanting to commit a malicious act against a crowded train carriage is many many many percent less likely to be caught than someone trying to do so on a plane with the extra layers of security.

I’m not criticising a lack of security on mass transit - more than random stops and occasional sniffer dogs to keep people on guard is completely unworkable.

Italian Cardinal whines that gay activism is stifling his right to bigotry:

“The ideology of homosexuality” – as often happens to ideologies when they become aggressive and end up being politically triumphant “becomes a threat to our legitimate autonomy of thought: those who do not share it risk condemnation to a kind of cultural and social marginalisation,” said Cardinal Biffi.

“The attacks on freedom of thought start with language,” he wrote. “Those who do not resign themselves to accept ‘homophilia’ … are charged with ‘homophobia’.”

and yet… and yet… i keep on remembering how we all thought ronald reagan would be the easiest republican to beat at the beginning of 1980…

Trust me. Reagan was brighter, a lot more experienced, and way more level headed than Palin. All these things matter in a presidential contest.

Reagan had been governor of CA. And he didn’t quit.

As to being easy to beat, considering the pass Carter had brought the nation to, a stuffed elephant would have won in 1980. If Obama is running for reelection in an environment of 20% inflation, 10% unemployment, gas rationing, and military humiliation, he’ll lose. It simply won’t matter how bad the Republican candidate is, and the only defense to a truly ridiculous Republican nominee will be for sober Democrats to go vote in the Republican primaries for a sober Republican.

If things are not so dire as all that, and they probably won’t be, Obama will win easily against an exceptionally ridiculous Republican, [e.g. Palin] and he’ll stand a good chance against a lackluster Republican. If there’s better than that available on the R side, he’s yet to attain national prominence.

BTW, another thought just struck me, why is “whitebread” Tony Perkins seemingly advocating the inclusion of more Blacks and Hispanics in the military? Usually this would seem to be something he was against, or at least he has not been openly adverse to their leaving the services wholesale before now.

Sure he wants them out of the military too, but right now it is just more expedient to use them against the Gays first, then later he can move on to the other “undesirables” I guess?

A article on the TSA controversy worth looking at:

TSA forces cancer survivor to show prosthetic breast

A longtime Charlotte, N.C., flight attendant and cancer survivor told a local television station that she was forced to show her prosthetic breast during a pat-down.

Cathy Bossi, who works for U.S. Airways, said she received the pat-down after declining to do the full-body scan because of radiation concerns.

The TSA screener “put her full hand on my breast and said, ‘What is this?’ ” Bossi told the station. “And I said, ‘It’s my prosthesis because I’ve had breast cancer.’ And she said, ‘Well, you’ll need to show me that.’ “

Bossi said she removed the prosthetic from her bra. She did not take the name of the agent, she said, “because it was just so horrific of an experience, I couldn’t believe someone had done that to me. I’m a flight attendant. I was just trying to get to work.”

For Americans who wear prosthetics — either because they are cancer survivors or have lost a limb — or who have undergone hip replacements or have a pacemaker, the humiliation of the TSA’s new security procedures — choosing between a body scan or body search — is even worse.

The words “hip replacements” were bolded by me, since they are a matter of special concern for me. My parents both have them and the new procedures may well pose a serious problem for them.

As bad as the current crop of Republicans (and the GOP leadership) is, I want the GOP to wise up, get healthy, and kick the kooks to the curb…one-party rule by default is no good to anyone and the Democrats would likely get comfortable and complacent, stagnate, and ossify without credible opposition.

Last time I flew was 1994. Horrible puddle jumper from Waco, TX to DFW. Southwest Airlines 737 from DFW to Palm Beach International. Similar arrangement on the way back. Not a terribly long flight.

I would be hesitant to do it again, even under cavalier 1994 circumstances, if my life depended on it. Primary reason being that Hell is other people.

Sociopaths are drawn to power like moths to light, or flies to horse droppings. They settle in by making the game nasty for decent people, even as the best and brightest come to believe that their work is done and that politics may safely be left to second-raters.

There’s a dynamic—-the one party gets fat, happy, and nasty, while the other party wanders in the wilderness and eventually bites the bullet and reforms itself at least a little. At the same time, the other party is less of a magnet for sociopaths, because where’s the power?

And so back and forth we go, never reaching utopia because human nature has its nasty side.

Interesting piece by Charles Krauthammer:

Don’t Touch My Junk

Ah, the airport, where modern folk heroes are made. The airport, where that inspired flight attendant did what everyone who’s ever been in the spam-in-a-can crush of a flying aluminum tube — where we collectively pretend that a clutch of peanuts is a meal and a seat cushion is a “flotation device” — has always dreamed of doing: pull the lever, blow the door, explode the chute, grab a beer, slide to the tarmac, and walk through the gates to the sanity that lies beyond. Not since Rick and Louis disappeared into the Casablanca fog headed for the Free French garrison in Brazzaville has a stroll on the tarmac thrilled so many.

Who cares that the crazed steward got arrested, pleaded guilty to sundry charges, and probably was a rude, unpleasant S.O.B to begin with? Bonnie and Clyde were psychopaths, yet what child of the ’60s did not fall in love with Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty?

I like the classic movie references, though anyone smart would be deterred from crime by the amount of fire Frank Hamer and the Texas rangers poured into Bonnie and Clyde.

This article is worrisome, though. Krauthammer seems fairly strongly pro- Tea Party here, and that always worries me.

We can’t check religion at the airport.

So far, the attackers have all been male, but the phenomenon of female suicide bombers in various areas suggest that may not be the world’s safest thing to hang our hats on.

Race has been variable.

Age has largely been young, but once again, no reason it can’t vary.

And ALL OF THIS CAN CHANGE AT A MOMENT’S NOTICE. It’s only what’s been done in the past. Not what can be done in the future.

Agreed. The planned liquid explosives attack were to have been carried out by women traveling with children. That was what William F. Buckley proposed. He proposed a series of markers that could be used to exclude someone from needing special scrutiny, but set those markers so that males between 15 and 30 could not get the 5 out of 6 markers needed. The idea was that young men are the people that the TSA, like other law enforcement, should pay the most attention to. Because it is males between 15 and 40 who commit the great majority of crimes.

Well, to me it’s more funny than annoying. People who are inclined to believe some pretty absurd conspiracy theories just taking at face value the “oh no, we don’t profile, nope, that would be naughty” bit.

It’s all about feeding their fantasy: They want to feel that they see things that others cannot see.

Still, it seems that when the term “profiling” is used, some folk immediately knee jerk to “racial profiling”.

And if they don’t, they need to explain exactly what they mean, and what they think it would mean for airport security.

If they start blathering about how people who OBVIOUSLY aren’t threats have to take off their shoes, I stop listening. There is no way out of doublechecking everyone’s ID, running them through some sort of weapons check, and looking at their bags. That is the bare minimum.

That sort of thing is above Palin’s pay brain grade. But seriously, I think it would help a great deal if folks did explain what they meant. I think it would also help if folks didn’t immediately jump to “racial profiling” whenever the term “profiling” is mentioned.

Visual cues, facial expressions/ticks, body language, subtle hints in responses to questions. This kind of profiling does work, and has been used successfully for centuries by those who know what to look for.

Whether or not TSA agents can successfully be trained to employ such techniques is another question.

Hiring intelligent people with an interest and aptitude for human psychology (at the minimum), who are empathetic enough to pick up on a person’s mood requires lots and lots of money and time. On the other hand, you can pay someone $12 / hr to follow the script.

Do not fool yourself into thinking that we, as a nation, have any interest in training TSA agents to do anything other than follow the script. It’s just a matter of time before we get our ass handed to us again (to the tune of who knows how many dead), and it will happen in a way that completely bypasses all the backscatter x-rays and genital groping in the world.

To be quite honest, I’m really having a hard time understanding why LGF denizens are so accepting of current TSA procedures. To me, it’s completely ineffective theater, nothing more. I’m comfortable asserting that there’s not a chance in hell that a backscatter X-ray will ever thwart a terrorist plot in progress.

Obviously, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Encasing kryptonite in a lead jacket has the effect of shielding Superman from kryptonite radiation.

I was counting on the lead shielding the radiation. He’ll have no idea what hit him until the round hit him, the lead jacketing gets stopped away by his powers and the kryptonite inner core shears thru the jacketing and continues thru his vital organs.

You’re wrong, and here is why. As the outer lead jacket impacts the immovable flesh of The Man of Steel and is spread and deflected away, the inner kryptonite slug will still retain it’s velocity, piercing his flesh and shredding his internal organs. The plan is flawless.

I’m curious too why you think living in Cook County makes you an expert on a subject that you can’t prove with actual evidence? Since we want to have it both secure and cheap, we wind up with racial profiling. Which in the end will turn out to be neither.

Is the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ repeal DOA?
politico.com

The repeal of “don’t ask” has been attached to the defense authorization bill, and Senate Republicans have already blocked the bill once before over this issue.

And while advocates scrape for 60 votes to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell,” there is no clear path to passage if the repeal remains embedded in the larger defense bill.

They should have done this 2 months ago. Put it up by itself, get the 60 votes, and move the hell on.

My brother is back in the hospital this morning. There’s something seriously wrong. I’m afraid he’s gone mental. He’s starting to act like Randy Quaid which is completely 180 degrees from his normal. I’m concerned he has a brain tumor, either that or he’s losing his mind. Can people who were previously incredibly mentally tough (he’s been in combat and survived 2 chopper crashes) just lose it that late in life? He just turned 40 which I think is too old for schizophrenia or any of the regular mental diseases.

Short answer, yes

Could be a nunber of reasons
Has he had any head trauma?
Any med changes/ additions (could result in a chemical inbalance)

Prayers to him nonetheless (and to you who has to watch helplessly)

re: #421 sattv4u2

No head trauma that I know of, he did take a major fall about 6 years ago. Broke a bunch of ribs, front and back, almost every bone in his arm and hand. He was run over by a car a month before he graduated from HS. Survived 2 helicopter crashes. He’s been stabbed, shot at, and almost had a french mirage mistakenly fire on him during the first gulf war. He’s had his body beaten up pretty badly but he’s always been very mentally tough. “rub some dirt on it and drive on” kind of guy.

Federal officer given probation before judgment in “Bear Bear” dog shooting
weblogs.baltimoresun.com

Federal police officer Keith Elgin Shepherd was given probation before judgment today for shooting a Siberian husky he claimed was attacking his pet and threatening him and his wife at a community dog in Severn.

Anne Arundel County District Court Judge Thomas J. Pryal said he would convict Shepherd, 32, on charges of misdemeanor animal cruelty and discharging his personal handgun within 100 yards of homes in the Quail Run neighborhood, but offered Shepherd probation before judgment, which means Shepherd will have the chance to have his record expunged if he meets the terms of his probation.

Pryal fined Shepherd $500 for the animal cruelty charge, and gave him a suspended fine of $1,000 on the handgun charge.

Now imagine what would happen to one of us if we got into an argument at a dog park and shot someones dog.

Woman who destroyed controversial artwork gets plea deal
9news.com

LOVELAND - Prosecutors have reached a plea deal in the case of a woman accused of destroying controversial artwork that some say depicted Jesus Christ in a sex act with another man.

Prosecutors say 56-year-old Kathleen Folden, a truck driver from Kalispell, Mont., pleaded guilty to a class one misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

Her attorney, Derek Samuelson, said the plea deal was just and appropriate.

Authorities say Folden will serve 18 months of unsupervised probation after she used an 18-inch crowbar to smash a Plexiglas case inside the Loveland Museum/Gallery on Oct. 6 and then destroyed a piece of artwork called “The Misadventures of Romantic Cannibals.”

I worked in the prison industry for a while as a state employee. I got to see some of the pleasure of private prisons. I use that as a basis.re: #460 sattv4u2

You answered your own question

No, I answered yours. The proposal is to turn it over to the private companies.

OK, let’s look at another major industry that’s got some similarities: Private Prisons. Nominally they’re under the guide of the respective state Dept of Corrections. They’re pushed as being better than public. However, when compared to equivalent state prisons - in some cases in the same states - they turn out to not be not so good.

Notionally they save money. However, they have a higher rate of escape than equivalent security prisons. There is a greater incidence of assaults on staff and on fellow inmates at private prisons. When you realize that in mixed states (states with both private and public prisons) the private prisons often have the option of refusing or returning prisons (shades of private school selectiveness) this is even more damning.

My guess about the ones right now is that they are heavily supervised by the TSA and so aren’t that much different. If the entirety except for a top level executive control is turned over to private industry I do not expect it to be a good thing.

In the end, privatisation of goods or services that only have the government as a customer, such as prisons or national security, is a ridiculous idea that results in greater expense, greater waste, lower quality, or all three. Natural monopolies are incompatible with the free market.

Police: Airbag credited with saving choking man

(CNN) — The impact of an airbag that deployed during a three-car accident is being credited with saving the life of a man, police say, dislodging a raisin that he was choking on while driving.

Richard Silvia, 53, an oil tank repairman from Falmouth, Massachusetts, lost consciousness and eventually control of his vehicle as a result of the apparent choking incident, according to a Falmouth police report filed Monday.

His car then careened into oncoming traffic, it said.

The impact of the airbag against Silvia’s face and chest dislodged the raisin, “reviving the operator to consciousness,” according to the report.

Police said Silvia suffered a minor abrasion on his wrist, while a woman involved in the accident is currently being treated for back injuries at a local hospital.

“Physically he’s there, but mentally he’s not,” his fiancee, Lisa Dempsey, told CNN. “He won’t eat at all since the accident unless somebody is there.”

Neither Silvia nor the woman injured in the accident could be immediately reached for comment.

Alberto Gonzales is saying that he might remember events a little different than W and will say so in his new book

Gonzales also told me that he’s in the midst of reading Bush’s book Decision Points — and while he’s found his former boss’ memoir “insightful,” he remembers some events a bit differently than the former president.

I don’t know how it’s possible that he remembers anything:

I would guess that he’s got to be careful about what he remembers or end up in jail on perjury charges.

re: #484 Varek Raith

Choking on food is probably a terrible way to die, because I know from experience that you feel so unbelievably stupid while you’re choking.

Once upon a time, I came freakishly close to death from a spoonful of Grape Nuts cereal. Grape Nuts can’t really be enjoyed when it’s still completely crunchy. It’s like eating tiny rocks at that point. If it soaks in milk too long, however, it becomes a terrible slurpy porridge, and unless you are the type who likes cold oatmeal, that’s just no good at all. In between those two poles is a particular Grape Nuts texture that’s still somewhat solid and chewy.

The downside is that it compacts like nature’s own caulking material. And so it was that one day, I was mindlessly ingesting some of this stuff, and SOMEHOW managed to get a big clump of it lodged in my trachea. This illustrates the bad design whereby we eat through the same hole from which we breathe. My ability to inhale or exhale just ceased. It’s truly amazing how rapidly you revert to animal instincts when you suddenly find yourself unable to breathe. Yet, I still managed to notice how ridiculously absurd it was that I, the contemporary iteration of an unbroken chain of life traceable all the way back billions of years to the first self-replicating molecule, all my ancestors having survived disease, plague, famine, predators, lightning strikes, war, accidents, and all of the other uncountable ways you can die, was about to be done in by a tiny little glorp of food, which was ironic considering I needed food to live.

I was really, seriously, fer-real close to losing consciousness, and had I done so, that would have been that. Somehow I finally managed to cough it out, and thusly I remain here to pollute the internets with my presence.

And the outrage over the TSA security measure continue from the wingnut fright factory….

Airport security has been a major focus of security efforts since 9/11, and rightly so. However, the government’s approach to keeping our skies safe has often been marked by an unfortunate focus on high-tech gimmicks and identity-based security — and, more recently, highly invasive pat-downs — that not only threaten American values but also fall short as an effective way to secure aviation.

The government should enact procedures that pose the least threat to our civil liberties and are also proven to be effective. Routine full body scanning, embarrassingly intimate pat-downs and racial profiling do not fit those criteria. The government must act quickly to take all reasonable steps to close any holes in our security, but it must also act wisely and in a manner consistent with our values.

The ACLU has a point on this one…

The ACLU, the New York Civil Liberties Union and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers have filed a lawsuit challenging the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) policy of searching, copying and detaining travelers’ laptops, cell phones and other electronic devices at the border, even when DHS has no reason to believe a search would reveal wrongdoing.
September 15, 2010

The DHS suspicionless search policy applies to both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens, and subjects travelers to the possibility of having their most personal information — such as financial records, family photographs and lists of Web sites visited — reviewed by government agents. Between October 1, 2008 and June 2, 2010, over 6,500 people — nearly 3,000 of them U.S. citizens — were subjected to a search of their electronic devices as they crossed U.S. borders. DHS claims it has the right to conduct these invasive searches whenever it likes, to whomever it likes, and without having any individualized suspicion.

So where are the reports coming from? They’re coming from people who have had their laptops searched by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). For more details on CBP’s mission, check out this post from the recently retired Deputy Commissioner at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Jayson Ahern.

So where is the confusion taking place? Well, many passengers often confuse CBP with TSA. Why? They have uniforms with the Department of Homeland Security patch and some people automatically assume they are TSA officers since they’re working in an airport capacity. TSA and CBP officers have different uniforms. The CBP uniform is navy blue, while the TSA uniform is more of a royal blue. You will only interact with CBP when you’re coming into the country.

They asked you to turn on computers briefly, not long after 9/11, when I think the scanners weren’t very good. Now you just have to put your computer in a separate bin so they can be sure it’s thoroughly scanned.

This statement (” Our officers don’t even turn computers on during inspection”) is only “true” if you consider that they ask YOU to turn them on.

That’s true. they do it that way because they don’t want to handle or search your computer. They ask you to turn it on to make sure it’s actually a functioning computer and not a gutted shell filled with explosives. It’s common sense security.

It doesn’t seem like there would be enough time.

Pascal Abidor, a 26-year-old dual U.S.-French citizen who had his laptop searched and confiscated at the Canadian border while traveling home to New York on an Amtrak train in May 2010. Abidor, an Islamic Studies Ph.D. student, was questioned, handcuffed, taken off the train and kept in a holding cell for several hours before being released without charge. When his laptop was returned 11 days later, there was evidence that many of his personal files, including research, photos, and chats with his girlfriend, had been searched.

Would that be enough time?

It doesn’t seem like there would be enough time.

Where I used to work, there was a rumor going around once, that a particular person who was hired, was hired to monitor and review everybody’s phone calls, every day, and that he was secretly recording all the phone calls and then listening to them. Everybody was in a complete panic.

So, let’s do the math.

400 people worked in the building. Let’s say, on average, all 400 spent 2 hours a day on various phone calls. That’s 800 hours of phone calls in a day. In order to review all the “taped” phone calls, there would have to have been a staff of 100 people, working 8 hours overnight, to listen to all the phone calls.

The whole thing was just stupid. I don’t know why people don’t stop to THINK about these sorts of things before they get all panicked about it.

I’ve got a new backpack, Swissgear’s ScanSmart.

TSA says that if your laptop computer is isolated with nothing else around it, you probably won’t have to remove it from your travel case. You put your laptop into the ScanSmart then when you get to the checkpoint, unzip one zipper. The bag unfolds like a clamshell with the laptop (and ONLY the laptop) on one side and all your travel gear on the other. Never had a problem, never had to remove the laptop. You think sooner or later someone would say “We need to see your laptop,” but not yet.

I think you can have a breakdown at any point in your life, and it sounds like he’s a prime candidate for some sort of PTSD or something.

In a letter Friday to TSA Administrator John Pistole, Reps. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, and Shelia Jackson Lee (D-Texas) said the agency should rethink the new screening procedures in light of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, typically the busiest travel time of the year.

thehill.com

Even the ACLU has weighted in on this…

Airport security has been a major focus of security efforts since 9/11, and rightly so. However, the government’s approach to keeping our skies safe has often been marked by an unfortunate focus on high-tech gimmicks and identity-based security — and, more recently, highly invasive pat-downs — that not only threaten American values but also fall short as an effective way to secure aviation.

I’ve flown twice over the last 2 years, didn’t find anything too different, (flew to Orlando less than a month ago).

Security in Europe has always been stricter than in the US, even on the subway systems, curious to see if it has become even more intense since my last time over there in Jan. 2007.

Of course, I’ll report back.

Well.. I don’t. Nor do I agree with the conservatives or the left who are making an issue about this. My only point above, is that this issue has become rather non partisan.

It’s not really becoming an issue. 81% of the population don’t mind the new security procedures. It’s amplified by the MSM and overblown stories and urban myths circulating on the internet. This will all be forgotten soon once the next outrageous outrage rolls around.

I will not wear anything with an underwire. And I do need support, but I am willing to shop around for things that don’t leave red welts on me.

And don’t tell me I just need to get FITTED. Been there, done that. Hate underwires.

Bra’s with the old fashioned “stays” are much gentler.

Mine, too, although I have encountered heavy delays recently in Nashville and Burlington, VT. But I strolled through in Portland, Ore.

So you never know.

Nashville is huge compared to El Paso. The El Paso airport is like a small-town, clean bus station. If those exist. My avatar is a photo from the nice courtyard there, with fountains behind the lizards.

The Chinese spent 200 million arugula to launch 34 warships at the WH garden!

I thought the Chinese went off the arugula standard in ‘06?

I meant to speak more generally. I did not intend to comment on the TSA stuff. I’m avoiding that. One must choose one’s battles; or as Mr. w would say, “That’s not my windmill.”

Seriously, I dunno. I do not suspect the TSA of any darker intentions than sort of getting their job done as cheaply and easily as possible, which, in my book, isn’t nearly good enough.

This new kick they’re on hasn’t been particularly explained or justified to me, and they had to know that people would respond poorly.

We’ll see.

Cost is number one, cheaper to fly, board off season. Less tourists (except Asians), easier to get reservations for certain events, cooler (Europe in the springtime or summer is like a sauna), there’s something magical for me with the crisper air, slight chill, walking around Paris after dark, having more of the streets to myself.

Less strikes (Parisians are not about to strike in the cold weather), over all, just less hassle. More comfortable. Less rushed. Paris is the number one tourist destination in Western Europe.

I always have visited Europe in Jan. or Feb.

In my opinion, it’s certainly an issue. And I guess we will see how much of an issue it is. If the TSA modifies and lessens any of their current security techniques, than I suggest they saw it as an issue too.

Palin would know about profiling and national second - the citizenry of the USA profiled her and found her wanting for the job of national second.

[Sorry, could not resist the cheap gag]
