Tuesday Night Tiny Desk Concert: Gary Burton and Julian Lage

In 1963, the jazz pianist George Shearing, an enormously popular act in his day, made an album that was unusual for him. He asked his new, 20-year-old vibraphone player to write an album of contrapuntal, classical-music-inspired compositions, and recorded them with a woodwind quintet atop a jazz rhythm section. It’s out of print now, but Out of the Woods received good reviews, and it remains an early career highlight for its young architect, Gary Burton.

Gary Burton is 70 now, and that’s just two pages’ worth of his new autobiography Learning to Listen. Here’s a guy who played with Stan Getz and Chick Corea, was an early adopter of jazz fusion, and became the Dean of Berklee College of Music. But when he stopped by the Tiny Desk, he saluted that moment by calling an unrelated tune called “Out of the Woods.” For his next number, Burton called “Remembering Tano,” a piece he wrote for another man with whom he’s worked briefly but meaningfully: new-tango pioneer Astor Piazzolla.

Burton has a long history of hiring great guitarists, and his current band is no exception. Julian Lage is just 25, but his own band already played the Tiny Desk once; his jabs and lean threading brighten this session. Their dialogue accentuates another thing about Burton: He may be past retirement age, but he can still dazzle. He concocted an impromptu blues for his final number, and sent his signature four-mallet grip slaloming up and down the instrument. —PATRICK JARENWATTANANON

Yeah, Kaczynski really made Rand Paul look like a dumbass today. (Like any other day of the week, I think.) The one question that has not been answered is whether Paul got his bogus quotes from David Barton, fake Christianist “historian.” I’m tempted to lay money that he did.

There are several sources for the fake quotes, judging from Kaczynski’s open letter to Luap Dnar, but I’ll bet Barton used the same sources for his fictional histories.

Robison, incidentally, is the son of televangelist James Robison.

BTW, if anyone cares, Gawker’s attorneys have asked for an extension to Nov. 12 to reply to Chuck’s voluminous responses and motions. Probably, the judge will grant the request, which I may add was filed according to the rules, and totaled four pages, not including the draft of the proposed order for the judge to sign.

re: #20 Kragar

The situation is a result of school administrators, frustrated by their inability to discipline unruly students effectively, giving up and relying on law enforcement to provide the discipline. Instead of encouraging better behavior, the practice just creates resentment and fear among the students, even among kids who are never discipline problems. It transforms schools into juvenile detention centers.

If schools are going to use cops as disciplinarians, there needs to be strict guidelines about what level of force/physical contact is allowed. Also, these cops need to be trained to see the kids as kids, not as potential criminals, and treat them accordingly. All that girl did is refuse to leave the classroom, and refuse to obey the officer. She probably figured she was doing nothing wrong, but her teacher obviously thought otherwise and called in reinforcements to eject her from the classroom. Without knowing what transpired before the cop entered the room, I can’t judge whether the teacher was justified in ejecting the student from the room. As a teacher, though, I can say that only students who are completely disrupting class activities or threatening other students or the teacher should be removed, and that only as a last resort. Some kids act up just so they CAN be booted out of class. Kicking them out is a reward, not a punishment.

The officer, meanwhile, was just plain enraged and let his anger boil over into a physical attack on a teenaged girl. Her family would be well within their rights to file charges against the officer, and file civil actions against him and the school.

In a perfect world, the administration of the school would ask itself how situations like this one could be prevented, and arrange some training for teachers, staff and LEOs on campus. I’m not holding my breath on that happening without some outside pressure being applied.

One of the videos from inside the math classroom at Spring Valley High School shows the student resisting, according to Lott.

In his incident report, Fields writes that he used “muscling techniques” to get the student out of her chair. He says she resisted, pulled away and hit him in the chest with a closed fist.

Both of these claims are complete and utter bullshit, right? She kind of flailed her arm up as she was being flung over, desk and all, but that was well after he was had begun wrenching her around by her neck. What the fuck is going on here? If the department has a third video that shows this why are they simply making these raw assertions instead of releasing it?

If both parents (if there is more than one) are off working 50 hours a week to support their families, when are they supposed to find time and energy for discipline and education?

Sounds like the entire school board has also gone into “don’t retreat, reload!” mode. It helps that they have an entire wing of the media backing up their view of things.

Minorities have to spend more time thinking about the issue at hand—race, religion, ethnicity, etc. That’s the real Old White Christian Male privilege—they have more time to spend thinking about classic cars.

Many parents, and not just low-income parents, expect the schools to provide the guidance and discipline they cannot seem to provide their own children. There are parents of all income categories, all ethnic backgrounds, who are just crappy parents. It’s the teachers who are expected to tame these “wild beasts” parents can’t or don’t or won’t raise properly.

When the schools drop the ball, then no one is looking out for these youngsters, except themselves.

There are some teachers who do manage to provide guidance and nurturing for their students, but imagine doing for that a different class of 30-35 students five times a day, five times a week. It’s exhausting work, and certainly not what they prepare us for in teacher prep classes. Teachers need the support of their principals, and the administration overseeing the principal to survive. All too often, that support is missing. Teachers get burned out, and leave, or get cynical and defeatist, and basically give up on the kids while going through the motions of teaching.

School violence, drug abuse, sexual assaults and crime in general just adds to the pressure on teachers and students. Having LEOs on the premises is a band-aid solution to a much deeper problem, one that can only be addressed by the entire school staff as a team, with the support of the board and district. But most higher-ups only care about standardized test scores.

Well, it’s not just the right wing. There are plenty of “left wing” reformers who also believe in the power of test scores. Arne Duncan, for one. The Common Core was not, originally, about test scores, but the policy-makers wanted some kind of measure of the CC’s effectiveness and the test creators are all too happy to oblige. From my vantage point in a country that is obsessed with mass examinations, I worry that the USA is veering towards the exam-happy Chinese system, where exams are the gate keepers for advancement.

40
William Lewis  Oct 28, 2015 • 4:25:04am

The problem is that the exams are used as ways to cripple education. It’s not like the Chinese or even Japanese tests required to go on to higher education, they are instead road blocks that are require teaching to the test and only to the test. By the time that you’re done with that, there is no time for anything else. One of the good things about common core is that in those topics kids are taught more than enough to pass the tests and actually learn more above and beyond the tests. And we certainly can’t have that!

It’s been a long time coming. It started in the 1980s when Japan was supposedly going to overtake us. Lawmakers were clamoring for answers. Some people pointed to their ed system and saw only the system of tests that seemed to separate in an egalitarian way those who could achieve from those who were less able (and not other factors like respect for teachers, huge investments by parents of at least some means in tutoring/juku, etc.). Japan faded; kids in China and South Korea did even better on tests; and we were left with a vague sense that we HAVE TO DO BETTER. I’m not sure anyone remembers the original reasons for the testing regimes.

Of course, the factors you mention are now what is more important—CC has good aims, but is subverted by testing, and the “oh no the DoEd is taking over my child’s mind” crowd stands in the way (though I think CC is quietly being used to inform curricular choices even where there was resistance).

There was a long discussion of this issue on Here and Now (plugs WAMU, 88.5 FM in the DC-Metro area) yesterday. And one of the points that was brought up is that schools are using law enforcement not only to enforce discipline, but also as a mechanism to legally punish students that the administration believe are problems. IOWs, bringing in a LEO to punish student for discipline issues (all the way down to truancy) can inject that student into the legal system, including the juvenile criminal court system.

Which has the added (as far as the administration is concerned) bonus of removing the student from that school. And, the circle of injecting children into the criminal justice system reinforces negative stereotypes and is overall a negative for the development and potential of the child. Once they enter the criminal system, their options are decreased and their education becomes stunted. I don’t need to add that LEOs are disproportionately called on students of color.

The RWNJ resistance to Common Core is mostly because they have the mistaken idea that it was handed down by the Ebil Obama Dept of Education and that it’s being forced on the states. There’s also the conspiracy theory types that claim it’s some kind of UN mandated brainwashing program — they say the same about the IB program. Then you’ve got the “good old days” people, who swear up and down that the way they learned in school was the best ever since Socrates was a baby.

What the CC does do is place a lot of responsibility on the teachers to implement the program. For some, it’s an entirely new way to teach, and there are always going to be people who don’t want to change their ways. Probably there’s some soreheads badmouthing it, and the RW noise machine just amplifies the grumbling.

And, let’s not forget the movement to abolish public education entirely.

This is one of the underlying issues that are being laid bare by videos such as the one of the security officer assaulting the black girl in school. And that there’s supposedly additional video but it hasn’t been released? It’s hard to find evidence suggesting that the girl did anything worthy of being assaulted, even if she refused to leave the classroom.

He might not be a racist, but he sure as heck has anger management/control issues that manifest themselves in treating students harshly. And whether this guy wants to admit it or not, he’s got some serious issues in how he deals with minority students, particularly if there’s a bunch of students who seem to think this guy resorts to violence at the drop of a hat when students get out of line (for even minor offenses).

Cop killers and serial killers have been treated with more respect than this girl (and many minorities who are caught on video being shot, assaulted, or hassled despite doing nothing wrong - for the latter see James Blake).

Exactly so. This creates the ability to take tests based on what you studied but not critically think about anything and make decisions based upon that ability to think. That thinking ability is what keeps a populace, in real terms, able to meet needs of the next decade (and the ones thereafter) in terms of technology, concepts and design. If you want to make a generation of workers who can only follow directions, your country will never lead the world.

Right, so many white people are utterly blind to this. I had to point out that Dylann Roof got treated to Burger King after he killed several people. The way minorities are treated by police departments is abysmal and frankly is at root of why those communities don’t exactly love the police. I remember Cop Killer got all that negative feedback from white Americans who no doubt have never had cops assume they were criminals because of their race.

Yeah, I wonder how many those same people who blame the kid would flip their own kid head over heels, throw them to floor and cuff them if the kid refused to do something. Or sit quietly if a cop did the same thing to their little precious Billy or Susie.

The usual suspects will quote stats that show the majority of school discipline referrals are for young black men, as if that proves they are all troublemakers. In fact, most of the time the black kids get disciplined just because they’re black. A white kid doing the same thing usually skates by with a warning from the teacher.

The headline of the chart is 55% of all black suspensions from U.S. public schools occurred in 13 southern states. My question is what percentage of the black population of the US live in those states? In a awful lot of northern states there isn’t much of a black population to speak of. It isn’t altogether surprising that black students get suspended more where they live. Isn’t that stat irrelevant if you don’t give me the breakdown of what percentage of blacks live in those states?

The 100% in 84 districts is far more relevant, unless those districts are almost all black(which would be a different problem).

Here’s the census data to pore through. Here’s the US data, and then you can go state by state.

An average state would have 13.2% Black/African Americans (the census terminology). Georgia would have 31.5%. Alabama is 26.7%. Mississippi 37.5%.

If the figures for those states were not racially motivated, then there should be a correlation between the suspensions and the racial makeup - that roughly 37% of suspensions in Mississippi should go to minorities, versus the balance to whites. That the figures are upside down is highly suggestive that racial profiling/racism is at work.

Other factors that could be involved? That you’ve got minorities concentrated in certain districts so that the bulk of suspensions are being handed down in them, while predominantly white districts have few/none of the suspensions, but that strikes me as insufficient since problem students can be of any race/background.

That isn’t what that chart was saying though, it was saying that 55% of black suspensions were in those 13 states not that 55% of suspensions in those states were blacks.

EDIT: the details of the chart do indeed show an inversion, but it doesn’t say anything about how that correlates to other states.

Exactly, and there is really no way to prove abortion has a thing to do with depression years later. This is why people need to understand that rarely is this a choice that’s made without a lot of thought. Idiots like Bill O’Reilly insinuate or outright state that women make this decision with the same cavalier attitude they would about a manicure or a new pair of shoes. I can see regret, and guilt, but those are external things brought about mostly by religion, culture, upbringing etc. Trying to tie abortion to mental illness or disease is a huge lie and our side of the issue has not been vocal enough over the years to counter deliberate miseducation, not only about abortion but also birth control. Which is why the assholes in Congress are “investigating” PP now. We haven’t kept fighting back against people/groups that spend lots of time and money lying to the public. We got too complacent and now we’re here. Again. Still.

I never thought about that- your point about talking about wanting to make abortions as few as possible. I definitely do think you’re right that a lot of the guilt comes from people like Fiorina who do describe abortion as murder and then others who furthermore liken it to the Holocaust or genocide. I confess I used to be in the former category about less abortions and stuff like that but I’ve realized some things in my 5 years here on LGF that ultimately this is not my choice at all to make as a man. Good Morning! Libyan Mig 23 to trim trees and cut grass? A lil clip for our aviation fans…

Video

Hell, man, I used to do that all the time——said no 66 year old pilot in the history of the world.
People have been flying at grass level and under bridges since the Wright brothers, and spectacular crashes have resulted on a pretty regular basis.
The ultimate in a pilot surviving a foolish stunt involved an insane flight path rather than any insane maneuvers however. 18 year old Mathias Rust embarrassed the Soviet defense establishment when he flew a rented Cessna from Finland to Moscow and landed in Red Square on 28 May 1987. The embarrassment was compounded when Rust spent 2 hours on the ground before anyone thought to arrest him. It is not true that several Soviet air defense commanders were executed for their role, or non-role, in this fiasco, though some did retire and others were probably re-assigned as junior watch officers in Frozen Balls, Siberia.
Rust was convicted of “malicious hooliganism” and packed off to Lefortovo prison. For some reason, western officials requested his release as a “good will” gesture at the time of the 1988 Reagan/Gorbachev summit. The Soviets were apparently happy to get rid of him and he was duly released. He has been in and out of trouble with the law ever since, including a conviction for stabbing a female co-worker and a couple of others for fraud. He currently claims to be working as a bank analyst in Switzerland.

I would think, and this is just my opinion, that the vast majority of women who do feel guilt about abortion, that guilt is a result of people like Fiorina who demonize it as murder.

Anytime you frame abortion as “few as possible” or “reduce the number of abortions” that does nothing but play into the Abortion is Wrong narrative which encourages guilt.

It’s exactly analogous with the fools who point to instances of depression among gay people to support their claim that being gay is bad. Causality runs the other way: having the fools go on and on about how being gay is bad makes some gay people depressed.

Here in China, abortion is a medical procedure, and nothing more. There is none of this drama and guilt, and frankly it took me a long while to get over the casual way Chinese people discuss abortion. But, it’s not as widespread as the anti-abortion people say it is here. Some of my former students and other acquaintances have gotten pregnant and kept their babies. Most have gotten married, but one young woman is raising her boy as a single mom. Where abortion gets touchy in China is when the population control office gives a couple with a second or third kid on the way a choice: pay a steep fine or lose the fetus. Parents in China are like any parents anywhere in the world: they usually want to keep the baby.

Exceptions are students, who can’t stay in school if they are pregnant, and career ladies, whose careers would be sidelined if they had a kid. There are few daycares in China. That’s what grandparents are for.

Yes, there’s precedent that goes back to the late 1890’s in the Wong Kim Ark case. Really, if the writers of the 14th did not want to include birth right citizenship for immigrants, they would have said so, a much greater percentage of the population was foreign born in those days. Right wing opposition to birth right citizenship can be summed up in one word- racism.

Pretty much. SXSW is such a cash cow here in Austin that they don’t want a single panel or event to overshadow everything else.

SXSW Interactive is literally Spring Break for tech nerds. Downtown Austin looks like Daytona Beach with loud party buses booming techno music, people getting drunk at 10am at various booths and lounges, and married people trying to figure out how to have random hookups without their infidelity ending up on Facebook or Instagram.

Then again, they usually have awesome keynote speeches and some killer concerts that week after the tech nerds leave. It’s not ALL bad. SXSW just wants to avoid something like Gamergate fucking up the party for everyone else.

It’s another instance, like the second amendment (and arguably the first) where the historical context meant that writers probably didn’t envisage the possibility that someone could come here with the express purpose of having a baby and then using that baby’s citizenship to stay*.

That’s America for you. I’ve talked about my tree a lot but my tree is filled with people who have some children that were born in the old country and others born in the US. My great grandfather was born in Germany as were two of his siblings but two younger brothers and a sister were born in Pennsylvania. I mean we have years of legal precedent going back over a century that accepts this as the law. Conservatives who object to this policy are simply being racist and nativist. They have no legal basis to object and it’s further absurd for them to claim the writers of this amendment did not intend for it to be used that way because as you know back then much more people in this country were foreign born but better born Irish or German than Salvadorian or Mexican I guess. //

Certainly. It’s like voter fraud though. It happens but it’s not the pandemic that is needed to change the law over. Birthright citizenship encourages assimilation which is why conservatives should favor it. Pretty much all my great uncles who were the sons of immigrants ended up serving in the United States military and today our military has a lot of immigrants too. We’re talking numbers in the low thousands, I’m sure. For Chinese moms and couples who have the money, giving birth in the States gives their kids an option for the future that they might otherwise not have — leaving China to live in the USA, or get an education. It also permits them to get green cards for their parents. Aside from the Chinese phenomenon, I don’t think many immigrants come to America for the express purpose of giving birth. They come here, meet someone special, and well, kids happen.

My mom and her two brothers were “anchor babies.” My grandpa didn’t get naturalized until just before WWII; grandma died young and didn’t get the chance.

I have seen various RWNJs try to pull out quotes from the writers of the 14th to claim ORIGINAL INTENT! ELEVENTY!. I’ve had to explain to them that whatever the authors wrote privately doesn’t matter as much as what the text of the Amendment actually says and how that text has been interpreted over the last century and a half.

I have to admit one of the most fun times I had as a tourist was being the only American in Portugal but then again most everyone spoke English so it wasn’t like I was completely a fish out of water.

My fun time was being on a tourist bus in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with Chinese, German, Italian and Spanish travelers, exchanging stories of why we were there and where we had come from.

And with that, I bid you all adieu until such time as it is daylight in my quarter.

I worked <10 hours a week as an undergrad (and no job at all my first year) and I can safely say I would not have done very well working much more than that. And I made more than minimum wage doing something really easy (computer lab supervisor/TA) and I usually spent my working hours doing homework.

It’s worth pointing out that a longer a student takes to finish a degree, the higher the costs are for the student. At most colleges taking 15-18 credits a semester to get to 120 credits is cheaper than 9 or 12 credits a semester for 120 credits, especially if the school’s tuition charges everyone at full-time (more than 12 credits) the same price.

Here’s the thing: You shouldn’t have to live like a monk in America in order to get anywhere. Part of the American Dream has always been to leave your children better off than you were. So if your kid has to save every dollar he makes as a teenager, hope he can win enough scholarship money to cover tuition, and still work his tail off while taking classes and dealing with homework just to get out of college debt-free, then somebody somewhere has fucked up.

Recordings of Jared Fogle bragging about his attraction to children and the lengths to which he would go to satisfy it will air on the “Dr. Phil” show on Thursday and Friday

The former journalist Rochelle Herman-Walrond says she posed as Fogle’s friend over the course of four-and-a-half years, wearing a wire and asking him about his predilections. “I would fly us clear across the world if we need to. To Thailand or wherever we want to go. If we’re gonna try to get some young kids with us it would be a lot easier,” Fogle told her.

At what point of an attack is someone allowed to fight back? I don’t think she is swinging a punch as much as flailing about, but, really…what is the allowance for fighting back to protect oneself? Worked part time in grad school and law school, lived in student slum, skimped and saved where I could, and still came out with significant debt. It could have been much higher, but I was lucky enough to land a job with sufficient salary and lived at home until getting married saving on costs there.

Not everyone has that kind of luxury. In fact, most folks don’t.

A friend with similar schooling wasn’t able to land a job with sufficient pay out of law school, and therefore had to extend his loans out to 30 years. I was able to pay mine off in 10. Other than the house, I carry no debt. He’s got loads, even though he’s now making significantly more than I am.

I’m comfortable with my situation, and I don’t think he’d trade his. But debt free straight out of school is rare. Especially if you’re not getting a free ride (because there are a whole load of costs that scholarships wont cover - housing, food, fees, etc.).

Apparently the answer is “Never.” If a cop orders you to strip naked so he can do a search on you on a busy highway, the correct response is to strip naked. If you feel his actions are unlawful, you’re supposed to comply with them, then sue him in court. Or so wingnuts have asserted to me whenever the case has involved somebody getting their ass beat by an out-of-control cop.

re: #255 Brother Holy Cruise Missile of Mild Acceptance

I just watched the video again and it does look like she was trying to defend herself when he had her in a chokehold. But remember, to the fascists we’re supposed to fully comply with the officer’s demands and never fight back/defend ourselves even when what they are doing is over the top.

And if this whole thing happened, as was reported yesterday, because of her non-participation in the classroom, that whole school needs to be shut down because that’s the craziest thing (of all the crazy things I read daily) I have heard in a long time.

I spent my high school years virtually never participating, even in classes I liked. I hated school until I went to college. In high school I passed (passing for me was mostly B’s which I could get without trying), only getting A’s in classes I liked. I did minimal work to get by. In college I was on the dean’s list, top 5% of the class from the beginning because I extended some effort. Not everyone likes school and not everyone participates.

The saddest part of all this is that many people who support police (like me) are rethinking that support because these cops are not the Officer Friendly’s of my youth. The Thin Blue Line needs to go and police need to police themselves. If you have a bad apple, cull it from the herd (sorry to mix metaphors) because if you don’t, you will wind up with the same lack of support those bad apples get.

Yes, it’s less doable now in the economic sense (I had the GI Bill). The physical bit is possible if you don’t like sleep. I used to dictate my homework to my wife while she drove me to work/school and she would type gobs of it up for me. My usual weird job on the assembly line was stop-and-go, so I could do a lot there.

So basically (and this is not to pick holes with you but more to illustrate the absurdity of this guy’s original manifesto):

40 years ago, it was possible to get through school without incurring debt if you had a supportive family, a government-funded support program, a job that allowed you to fit in schoolwork during hours you were nominally being paid to do something else, and the ability to function on reduced sleep for long stretches of the year.

You have to be smart, and you have to have a real knack for your course of study. You could do it.

Financially, though? Yeah, I call bullshit. You can’t rent a room for his entire annual take home, let alone an apartment, and that leaves out utilities, food, transportation, etc.

It’s possible but it’s not recommended. Bear in mind that your “fucking off” was in some way contributing to your overall mental state (one would hope it was reducing stress, though certainly too much of that can be a symptom of problems engaging with academic work).

Some people are able to work alongside a full, rigorous college workload. But extended non-academic work hours are well known to correlate with non-completion.

Not in Munich - rents there are insanely high.

OTOH, university would be free (though very competitive to get in), there would be a student stipend, and your parents are required to financially support you if needed until you’re 28 or so.

Let’s see, I went to school 25 years ago, at a moderately good mid-Atlantic university. Tuition rose from $10K-$14K while I was there. I worked 1 job in the school year, 3 jobs summers to support myself, my parents had to take out a 2nd mortgage to pay my tuition, and I got some scholarships and financial aid including (small, thank goodness) loans.

My alma mater is now approaching $60K/yr. Minimum wage is $10.50/hr in that state, or $21K/year at 40 hrs/wk. …have fun with that.

This is very true, and the key policy point in all this is that southern/conservative states have by and large focused on maintaining low-net-cost access to state institutions, with a heavier tilt in redistribution towards the upper middle class (aka the “squeezed middle”).

re: #326 HappyWarrior

You know, I’m the son of one federal employee and a grandson of another and I am a prospective one myself but that’s bullshit especially for a Congressman like Ryan who has a ton of vacation days.

The thing is, if someone asked me: “who works harder, a congressperson or a farm laborer?” my answer would be: “I don’t know, let’s take a look at what those individual people actually do”.

But the standard Redstate party line is that Washington politicians don’t know the meaning of true work, are bad because they are cut off from the real world of honest (white) Americans, yadda yadda yadda. So it’s always funny when one of their writers really gets the bit between their teeth and ends up arguing for the precise opposite of what they usually go with.

And I think that says a lot about the present state of the GOP’s slate of candidates, that they can’t hope to win unless Hillary either goes to prison or is so damaged electorally that people will think a nutbar like Carson is an acceptable choice.

That was their great hope for the failed Benghazi hearings. Gowdy Doody and the rest of the idiots were supposed to catch Hillary in some massive conspiracy and prove she did something wrong on live TV to destroy her before the primaries. They were supposed to be the saviors of the pathetic GOP bench. Oops.

It’s a business that relies on men who are willing to destroy their bodies and aren’t properly compensated or protected against harms sufficiently. I lost all interest in watching games when it became clear that the NFL lied/hid the details about the link between brain injuries on the field and leaving former players cripples, suffering from mental illness, and suicidal. The league fought for years to avoid any release of the link, and then tried to play down the costs, even as every player is at risk of TBI and the harms that go along with it long (or not so long) after their playing days are done.

Ummm, how exactly does that show anything? 190+ ambassadors, other state department functionaries, and under-secretaries of state, who are responsible for actions. Let’s just ignore the bit about how State requested additional funding for security, but the House GOP refused the request. Or that in the aftermath of Benghazi, the President decided to set up a DoD group to respond to diplomatic facilities that come under attack - something no other president did, even though others, like Reagan, Bush, and Clinton had multiple attacks on their watches. Dozens died on Reagan and Bush’s watch at diplomatic facilities and there wasn’t nearly the interest in hearings let alone setting up a rapid reaction force. Obama does it, and the GOP still intent on trying to find Hillary at fault for something.

That’s what this boils down to.

Of course, it was pointed out to that delightful chap that Trump and Carson (and every other GOPer on the WH trail) sucked on the government teat in one form or another.

Trump gets incentives from NY/NYC to build.
Carson’s state assistance is well documented.

And of course, most of the rest went to public universities.

1) Jeb went to UT Austin (hey, that’s a public university).
2) Marco went to a community college and then University of Florida (again, a public university).
3) Christie? University of Delaware (HEY!)
4) Fiorina? UCLA Law (I’m starting to see a pattern here) and MBA at Maryland (2-fer).
5) Lindsay Graham? University of South Carolina (wait, wut?)
6) Santorum? Penn State (that trend keeps showing up).’
7) Kaisch? Ohio State
8) Gilmore? U Va

Those without public higher education: Paul, Cruz (though he taught at University of Texas, Austin, Law School), Huckabee, Trump, and Jindal.

So, of the 14 candidates, you’ve got 9 who did at least part of their post-high school education at a public university. Subsidized public education at that. Of those that didn’t, you’ve got Cruz and Jindal who went to Ivy League schools. Paul went to Baylor and Duke Med. Huckabee went to a religious university. Trump? He attended Fordham and U Penn.

No one could have predicted:

While Carson’s string of bigoted and head-scratching statements have received the most attention from the media, his fiscal plan deserve scrutiny, as it relies on pure fantasy. His policies include:

Amending the U.S. Constitution with a Balanced Budget Amendment
Refusing to ever raise the debt ceiling
Establishing a flat 10 percent rate that he said was inspired by the Bible
Ordering cuts of 3 to 4 percent across federal departments, except defense

Essentially, Carson plans to dramatically reduce revenues with huge tax cuts for high earners (while raising taxes on the 47 percent of people who — while responsible for paying other forms of taxes — do not owe federal income taxes), approve some spending cuts while reversing the current dip in defense spending, and then magically balance the budget by the end of his first term all the while running the risk of creating a global financial crisis due to his refusal to raise the debt limit.

As Tim Worstall of the conservative Adam Smith Institute wrote in Forbes, Carson’s plan flies in the face of “the simplest of logic and mental arithmetic.”

It’s a cruise missile defense radar system - to identify potential cruise missiles targeting the US. This way you have a radar aloft looking for targets that are flying low to the earth, rather than using ground based systems.

That the radar is held aloft by a balloon instead of an aircraft (akin to AWACS, JSTARS, etc.) is seen as a cost-effective alternative.

Oh, and the cost is much more like $7.5 billion, not $2.7 billion.
