Anthony Weiner Schedules Press Conference to Deal with Latest Accusations

Politics • Views: 49,049

Rep. Anthony Weiner has scheduled a press conference at 4pm ET in New York, presumably to address the latest accusations from Andrew Breitbart. So here’s a thread to discuss as it happens; we shall see what we shall see.

On Twitter, I’ve been getting attacked like crazy all morning; apparently I’ve now “lost all credibility.” This is at least the 50th time this year that I’ve finally lost all credibility. I guess it keeps growing back or something.

And I’ve been getting a flood of hate mail, much of it demanding that I “apologize” for something. So here’s my official response to this demand:

Not a freaking chance. If Weiner admits to sending the pictures in question, I’ll be surprised and disappointed, but I’m never going to apologize for calling it as I see it.

And I’m certainly never going to apologize for pointing out that Andrew Breitbart is a sleazy fraudster, with a well-documented and very tawdry history of deception.

So to those demanding that I apologize: try holding your breath until you turn blue. Maybe that will do it.

UPDATE at 6/6/11 1:33:21 pm

And there we have it; Rep. Weiner has admitted to sending the pictures, in an abject apology. But he says he’s not going to resign.

UPDATE at 6/6/11 2:13:16 pm

Just to be absolutely clear about this: yes, Andrew Breitbart got this one right. But again, I will never apologize for doubting his credibility. He’s smeared too many innocent people, he does not deserve the benefit of the doubt, and getting it right this one time does not change those facts.

OK the apologize thing is weird.

To who?

Don't let them get to you, Charles. You're an honest guy doing what journalists and many others are either scared or too lazy to do.

I still don't understand how you can gain access to a Congressman's personal email account, take photos from the "sent email" folder, post it on a website, and not get a visit from the FBI shutting you down.

28 elizajane  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 1:06:58pm

MSNBC has the stream and indeed Breitbart is the only one talking. He's talking about ACORN and Obama. "I had to figure out a way to go around the President's protectors in the Mainstream Media and I did..." It's ALL about HIM.

I'd find your argument more persuasive if Andrew Breitbart hadn't publicly stated how he wants to destroy liberalism as a political force in America.

It's an easy concept...When you're married or dating someone seriously don't send pics of yourself in your skivvies and you don't have anything to worry about. It goes back to my rule #1, if there weren't any pics then he wouldn't have made his wife look like bad. She's the only one that deserves an apology here.

But now we know how patriotUSA found out, the guy was obsessively reading every single update from Weiner. Probably specially after he found out about the pictures.

I don't have a lot of faith anything will come of that. The AG Dept. offered her job back and she initially refused it. Even though she was clearly slandered, it's hard to see what damage was done to her reputation. In fact, up to now, the only one damaged by it (how minimal) was Breitbart.

Amen. This would have been a two-day non-troversy, something that got below the fold coverage. Now? Here is my prediction, for what it's worth.

He'll lay low for awhile and this will blow over, and then he'll re-emerge, chastened, and will be as firey as ever. And the reason he will is because he has publicly taken responsibility for this, has shown remorse, and as I said before, has been taking some pretty embarassing questions for about 20-25 minutes now. He could have made his statement and left with a comment like ""now it's time to return to the busness of the people of my district," but I think he's going to stay there until they get tired of asking questions, and that can only help him.

In other words, this too shall pass.

I went with all the evidence available, rather than relying on an intuition, and balanced against Breitbart's well earned notoriety, I concluded it was a setup. It is possible I suffered from confirmation bias, not because Weiner is left but because Breitbart's evil clown dance has given him far too many points, so I'll have to be a little more careful in the future.

To a lot of people there's a difference between this kind of thing and actual cheating tho'

It has no real parallels to Clinton, really.

Except you were wondering about what behavior a wife accepts from a husband. Hillary and Huma have a parallel, more than their husbands do.

336 iossarian  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 1:46:21pm

Well, the overall outcome sucks in terms of its actual nature (Weiner was lying, Breitbart's story turns out to be essentially true).

However, the press conference, I think, works mostly in Weiner's favor (especially since he is in a fairly safe district):

1) Breitbart further confirmed that he is an angry lunatic
2) Weiner shows genuine contrition and humanity, all the more so due to the contrast with 1) above

I think he'll do fine. And I hope he does, since he is a vote against such delightful policies as giving seniors a voucher for healthcare that decreases in value every year.

337 JeffM70  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 1:46:36pm

And that's really what it gets down to, assertions by wingnuts to the contrary. We didn't "defend" Weiner out of some partisan motivation, nor because we feel some slavish devotion to him. We called into question the assertions of a known bullshit artist, did our own investigation, and reached conclusions that we thought to be valid. We gave Weiner the benefit of the doubt, which we had no reason to believe at the time to be the wrong thing to do.

I dunno. I think that males, at least, are, in fact, somewhat predisposed to having multiple mates. Perhaps less so than in earlier human history, due to changes over time, but it's fairly common in other types of animals.

re: #406 iossarian

I think that men are hard wired to cheat. This doesn't mean "to have sex with other women", it means "to transgress the social order". In other words, you can't get rid of the problem by changing the social order, because that just makes men want to find different ways to transgress.

It's the same with porn. What people miss, when they complain that mainstream media has become "pornified", is that this doesn't mean that skimpy outfits on late-evening comedy/drama shows (which would have made Victorian males self-combust) perform the same function as porn. The whole point of porn is to transgress what is acceptable.

Men and women cheating and then hiding it is an ESS.

I dunno. I think that males, at least, are, in fact, somewhat predisposed to having multiple mates. Perhaps less so than in earlier human history, due to changes over time, but it's fairly common in other types of animals.

Oh, sure, I agree with that. But I disagree with the idea that you can "solve" the problem by saying OK to mistresses/whatever, because I believe that men (to some extent) have a drive to go beyond whatever boundary is set.

Having had an affair would have been more understandable than being an utterly stupid fool to send emails that any child knows could come back to bite.

Or is it simply a cultural imposition that denies valid worldviews/lifestyles? I honestly can't say I'm sure what my feelings are on this.

No that is not what I'm saying. Don't be such a frigging jerk.

I'm saying that under some circumstances having had extramarital sex could be a matter of private life that some 50%, I read, of married couple in this country have done.

This action is just plain too stupid for someone in his position to put himself in.

Stupid; not human frailty.

This shows a greater lack of judgement and self control than any moment of giving in to lust would have done and will haunt him and Democrats credibility in the future.

Less sex control than any of the other politicians who have actually had real physical sex with other women, often even fathering kids outside of marriage???

Everything he did sounds like what goes on with the more annoying boys in my daughters' 8th grade class. If you don't have adolescent kids, you might not know that it's now ordinary for a boy to go up to some well-endowed girl and say, "If you'll send me a picture of your boobs, I'll send you one of my penis." Not condoned by the school authorities, mind you, but ordinary. Even my highly non-flirtatious, geeky daughter has been fed that line. She knows girls who go for it, too.

Anyway, Bratfart will be more insufferable now than ever.

This does show the methodology of how rumor and smear machines work. Like previous stances of such organizations as the National Enquirer, gossip columns, etc, the method goes like this: throw out N accusations over time. M% of them will turn out to be true. Then, trumpet that M% and ignore the rest you got wrong.

That, btw, is how many so called "financial advisors" work. That's what gold bugs do too... only trumpet when they are correct.

A friend of mine is a virgin at age twenty-five, and it's funny how many people treat him as a sexual deviant because of it.

615 ElCapitanAmerica  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 2:37:35pm

From BigGovt. the one of the ladies that gave Breitbart the pictures has an article;

I admired Rep. Anthony Weiner because I had seen a video of him standing up for the 9/11 responders. It was a rant, but he came across as someone very passionate, someone who cares about what he believes in. I didn’t know much more about him.

On April 20, I clicked on his Facebook page that I “liked” a video of Rep. Weiner addressing a gathering of construction workers in Washington, DC. I commented that it was “hot.” That’s the only way I came into contact with him at first.

....

I was contacted and asked to tell my story. I finally came forward last week because I saw on television that Rep. Weiner had hired an investigating firm to go through all of his files. I worried that there would be people looking at my pictures and messages. I was nervous, but decided that since my messages with Rep. Weiner were going to come out anyway, I wanted to tell my own story rather than have other people talking about me when they didn’t know anything.

I’m not on a crusade to “take him down.” I just acted to protect myself and my family.

...

At first I was skeptical that I was really talking to Rep. Weiner, so I asked him to take a picture of himself, which he did. Then I asked him to pick up the phone and call me. I had to hang up because of something that was happening on my end, but then I called back and heard a voice saying, “Congressman Anthony Weiner’s office,” so I hung up. He asked me if I was satisfied, and I guess I was–I didn’t pursue that any more.

I wonder how Breitbart got a hold of her though ...

640 RadicalModerate  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 2:45:10pm

If Rep. Weiner comes completely clean with respect to what he did, this will within a fairly short period of time, other than the braying of Brietbart - who really should be focusing more on his upcoming defamation lawsuit - be no more than a political footnote. There has been nothing illegal that has taken place. Weiner's actions, outside of flirtatious texting and suggestive (but not obscene) pictures, doesn't even measure against the marital infidelity of the Ensigns, Vitters, Schwarzeneggers, or Edwards of recent times.

The saddest part about all this? Because of Weiner's loss of credibility, the completely credible case that he's made against Clarence Thomas' blatant conflicts of interest are likely going to be moved to the back burner, if not completely taken off the table for the forseeable future.

Seems to me people assume marriages are staid vanilla nothing terribly exciting relationships. But many devoted couples entertain themselves with the safest "extramarital" sex there ever was-internet affairs. All the contact is digital, er broadband. Hmm, all these terms can be double entendres.

Maybe it's time for some people to stop assuming every wife or girlfriend will freak out over any porn bookmarks, phone sex, or sexting in a mans entire history or sex life. Kinda silly. If any of those people who dare to have a bit more fun than Ozzie & Harriet seemed to have are at all public figures, or worse-teachers, their privacy is all that protects them from public humiliation and career ending tabloid articles. 651 The Mongoose  Mon, Jun 6, 2011 2:49:16pm

LGF has always been very, very good at using Occam's Razor to get at the truth. The most plausible explanation for something is usually the right one. It's why conspiracy theorists from all sides of the spectrum (birthers, truthers, holocaust deniers, other assorted idiots) are roundly and justly mocked on these pages .

I think the ball got dropped a bit on the "simple = probable" front this time. It was certainly possible, though a bit odd-sounding, that Rep. Weiner's account was hacked by some vague unidentified hacker who did it so Andrew Breitbart could smear him. But once Weiner admitted it was a photo of him and other details began to emerge, some people kept believing what they wanted to believe instead of accepting that it was becoming increasingly obvious that Weiner was involved and no massive hacker conspiracy existed.

It was always highly possible that Rep Weiner is a cheater and a liar. There's lots of them out there, particularly in politics. Personally, I'll be taking this as a reminder that convoluted Machiavellian plots are just not that common in real life.

Occam's razor says that, in order to explain something, you shouldn't introduce unnecessary complexities.

It is not highly complex, especially with the yfrog security hole demonstrated, to say that a picture got uploaded in that way. It is also not especially complex to say that someone had pictures of Weiner and used them.

If it had been anyone other than Brietbart reporting on it at first, it might have been more credible, but when someone who is known for hoaxes and smears is reporting something, it is, in fact, Occams' Razor to assume it's another hoax and smear.

I listened to an interview with this woman who wrote a book that was all about her affairs as a mistress for wealthy men. It turned out to be popular with women, wives who were helped to understand. She has a concept, advice for women in this case. Negotiated infidelity is not necessarily permission to cat around, but can be as simple as an understanding attitude about porn and strip clubs.

Add the fact that in the post viagra era, mens sex drives are often (sometimes?) literally outlasting their post menopausal wives. The next sexual revolution (not a fan of that overused overblown term) is underway.

So, we really don't know what happened between Mr. and Mrs. Ryan. Weiner did the smart thing today by admitting everything. He is leaving the press no place to go. Okay, if they find there was a 7th woman, they could say he did not come completely clean...but we will all be too bored with the scandal to care anymore.

Wasn't there a movie of a Tom Clancy book where the hero, Jack Ryan, tells the president to admit to the worst possible interpretation of an embarrassing situation in order to kill the story? My brother, sister, and I have done that since I can remember. But we go on a large national forestry corporation's web site to do it. We'd get all tanked up, bundle up in warm clothes, grab whatever kind of saws looked appropriate, and then sneak in like ninja team tree cutters.

The trees were always way too big, and at least one of us had leaky boots and nearly got frostbite. Every time. But it was good times.

Our neighbor illegally built a pond and the uncontrolled runoff from it did a lot of damage on our property, washed out some nice crawdad habitats. He was in tight with the town planning board so he never got dinged for it beyond having to pay for some flood control stuff on it.

So it's a bit of getting our own back.

Weiner, you slime-mold perv, resign now and never show your sleazy face in public again.
You have betrayed your office, your family, and your party. Worst of all, you have provided otherwise non-existent credibility to your fellow slime Andrew Breitbart. The repercussions could be enormous as Blight-bark's influence on the right grows by leaps and bounds.

I'm deeply saddened that an effective voice against right wing lunacy allowed himself to be so careless and foolish in today's media environment.

As to any sort of apologizing to Breitbart... please....

He publicly and maliciously defames people for a living. He lied about Acorn. He lied about Sherrod. He has no credibility as an honest anything.

No sane person would take Breitbart at his word for anything.

Nah--that's kind of bland. Here's a snark master I just captured from another blog's comments on James Carville:

AngryWhiteDoofus

America, I’m scared of this radical islamo fascist Manchurian socialist that’s commandeered the White House. Who is this Barack Hussein Obama foreigner and what’s he stand for besides income redistribution, George Soros, and tantra sex? Who knows when B. Hussein Obama is gonna unleash his legion of militant lesbian transvestites upon us? When it happens we’re all gonna be doing the downward dog in bondage straps while Janet Reno and her goons are nibblin’ foie gras off our bare derrieres! America, I’m scared that the Mexican narcos and Arizonan she-males are in cahoots with the ChiComms to annex the American southwest and turn it into a land of menopause, Roman Polanskis and labradoodles. Before you know it, we’re all gonna be hablando mexicano, eatin’ piñatas and worshippin’ cinco de mayo! Comprende amigos?
I’m scared that B. Hussein Obama and his Keynesian comrades – Fidel Castro, Chairman Mao and Jane Fonda, want to impose an illegal alien hot gay porn abortion ideology on us. Step one – his army of angry butch feminist trial lawyers mandates that all non-homosexual males sleep with Jeff Striker blow up dolls! Step two – castrating all of us not thereafter converted to anal beads, San Francisco bathhouses, and Barney Frank! America, I’m scared that the only chance we’ve got, Sarah Palin, is being demonized by the left wing media elites. They hate her ’cause she’s for truth, ammo, t.v. and cheez-its. Sarah’s the only thing standing between us and the libs theology of tofu burgers, bare backin’ on the down low and welfare queens.!
America, I’m scared that we’re on the road to Obamastan where there’s no room for Jesus, only Kwanzaa, Ramadan, MSNBC, and pre-op trannys. These lib constitution haters won’t stop until their new world order of diplomacy, sudoku and hermaphrodites has turned us into a nation of chardonnay sippin’ castrati! It’s time to stand up America! It’s time to stand up to their global warmin‘, Fire Island and hippies! It’s not too late to avoid a future of Kabbalah, gender identity studies and suckling’ organic soy milk from Al Gore’s breasts!

Weiner is scum of the lowest order. Well John Edwards is lower. He is pretty much wallowing around with Schwarzenegger.

This is a terrible blow. First and foremost, the humiliation of his family, but beyond that, the women and their families that he dragged through this and they are young enough (from what I understand college women) to not have all their brains together about it - a big politician showing them attention. All of us who believed him and wanted to support him. And on top of everything, giving that pig Breitbart fuel to burn.

Weiner got married less than a year ago.

That's a pretty short time for the magic to disappear.

You think he might have been, y'know, doing this on his honeymoon?

Huma: Anthony, come to bed.
Weiner: Just a sec. I'm finishing up something on the computer.

This seems more like stupid frat-boy style raunchy "humor" than actual attempts at establishing extramarital relationships. It's definitely dumb, dumb, dumb...but the marriage may have had no trouble, up until now anyway.

If someone is having trouble understanding your point, or even if they do understand it but you believe they don't, the onus is on you to at least attempt to be clearer. Additionally, calling people who recognize this, sycophants and ding-a-lings is a great way of showing your basic misunderstanding of your own responsibilities.

re: #615 ElCapitanAmerica

From BigGovt. the one of the ladies that gave Breitbart the pictures has an article;

...

I wonder how Breitbart got a hold of her though ...

Hmm. If you go through some of Breitbarts other postings from this morning there's stuff like this:

A new woman has come forward with what she claims are photographs, chats, and emails with Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY). These appear to undermine severely Rep. Weiner’s explanations that he was the victim of a “prank” or a “hack.”

The detailed new information suggests that the Brooklyn- and Queens-based representative and the young woman in question were involved in an online, consensual relationship involving the mutual exchange of intimate photographs.

BigGovernment.com and BigJournalism.com were approached regarding this information more than a week prior to the separate, independent event of Friday, May 27, 2011, when a link to the now-infamous “gray underwear” photograph appeared publicly on Rep. Weiner’s Twitter feed.

And:

On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, Rep. Weiner sent an email to the young woman from that same Yahoo! email address that included the now-infamous grey underwear photograph (attached to the email as “package.JPG”):

[original grey underwear image]

Later that same day, apparently after receiving several images from the young woman, Rep. Weiner allegedly sent another photograph to her from the same Yahoo! email address.

That photograph (attached to the email as “ready.JPG”) is extremely graphic, and leaves nothing to the imagination.

So Breitbart had the extensive evidence of Weiner's internet sexcapades a week before the congressman tweeted the underwear pic... and he even had that very underwear pic.

I suppose what you can infer from that is Breitbart kept all this quiet afterward, timing the eventual release of the information to maximize the political damage Weiner caused himself (and his party) in the interim (with the follow-on lying and evading).

I am still amazed you think actual sex would be less bad than text and photos. I think that's weird. I believe you think Weiner did something stupider than giving in to urges, and some how the urges would be forgivable, but the stupidity is less acceptable in a Representative. But I disagree.

The urges that you talk about are the ones you imagine, and I'll be kind and not say fantasize, but my entire point here is not to "imagine" all the worst indiscretions relating to sex, some which can be much much worse than others.

My simple point is that this matter is one of judgement and intelligence of such a primitive form, known by every teenager, that I find it inexcusable in someone with his position.

Stupidity is the operative word and that is not allowed in his position, IMHO.

re: #98 RogueOne

Breitbart didn't start this, Weiner did by being an idiot. Rule #1 if you're going to flirt around is not to make your spouse look like an asshole. Rule #2: Nothing in writing and definitely no freaking pics. Rule #3: If caught, Deny, Deny, Deny.

He got 1 out of 3 right.

What did he do that was illegal? I see this going all ape shit about things, but really what was illegal? Immoral? possibly. Stupid? Certainly. I hated the lying part of it, still not illegal tho' (Fox taught us that lying is not against the law). Has Weiner been bitching about our loss of family values and that he should be the pinnacle to emulate of said values ? I don't think so, so no two faced "do as I say, not as I do" BS.

He screwed up and should take the heat for that, but punishment as if he broke the law is totally uncalled for.
